...Republican "Mr. MacArthur had not conceded, releasing a statement calling for all votes to be counted “in a transparent way that protects the integrity of this election.”" --ANOTHER lying GOP who will only call to 'count all votes' when they are BEHIND in the initial tally. I'm sick of these fools. Republicans! Get Democratically Fair (and fair-minded) or get off the stage and out of the Gov't. If the people don't elect you, you have no right to govern (someone tell bozo POTUS). Down with Autocratic Trumpism. The USA is not a place for a dictator.

Voters were more focused on health care than on the cap on their state & local tax deduction. I suspect that's because a lot of people haven't realized the impact on their tax bill that the state and local tax deduction cap will have. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a big issue in the spring when the 2018 taxes become due. A lot of people are going to be hit with big tax bills if they haven't adjusted their deductions.

Between Chris Christie, ahem, spread out on a closed New Jersey State Beach, and Donald Trump taking away property tax deductions - it's easy for New Jersey to rationalize voting democratic.

The NJ 3rd District is politically split, with Democratic leaning Burlington County and Republican leaning Ocean. I supported Mr. Kim, and urge him to stress issues and policies that gravitate toward centrism.

Guess trying to repeal the popular Obamacare is not a pre-existing condition covered by voters

I met Mr. Kim at any event where I was working. He was intelligent, articulate, passionate, and presented a clear picture of what he hoped to accomplish. His opponent? Not so much. Congratulations Mr. Kim! I know you will great things for your community and New Jersey.

Good luck Andy Kim Decency wins the day

The urban electorate of the United States voted in 2018 and, for the most part, they voted against the politics and persona of president Trump. Sure, the president can count on his "base" to turn out, but it has not expanded. In 2015-16 the traditional GOP had many issues with Trump when he jumped into the nomination race in 2015, but ultimately, they succumbed to the enthusiasm of his supporters. The majority of voters are getting weary of Trump, his daily tweets, criticisms and the divisive nature of his politics. Now the GOP is caught in a dilemma: Given the obvious limitations of Trump and corrosive effect he's had on the GOP, how do they campaign for 2020?

The republican candidate was following Trump's playbook in his campaign slinging mud at his opponent. There was never a message from him defending his record in Congress or what he has planned NJ voters if he were to win. NJ voters know what is good for them. The presidential and the Senate races across the country in 2020 are a different matter. NJ turning bluer will not affect how the red states vote on these races. Unfortunately we may be stuck with McConnel and Trump calling the shots past 2020.

Obamacare did have death panels after all- for the congressional seats of MacArthur and his ilks in congress.

MacArthur’s ad campaigns against Kim were among the most shameless and despicable of the entire national election season. To paint a national security policy wonk as some out of control radical was laughable and voters saw right through that. Perhaps Hugin and MacArthur simply calculated that in the current environment they had to go massively negative to the point of slander to have a shot. Well, it didn't work. Maybe next time they can present to the people of New Jersey a set of policies that will benefit everyone instead of the same old same old tired kowtowing to corporate interests. That would be a novel approach.

That's one republican too many for NJ.

People voted against bigger deficits and for affordable healthcare? This is a shock! The GOP has turned a blind eye to both fiscal reality and political commonsense.

I grew up in Mr. Smith's district and there appears to be good signs for this seat flipping in 2020. His margin of victory has usually hovered around ~30-40 pts but 2018 showed only a victory of +13 pts. That is a massive drop and, if the current political climate keeps driving out voters who don't normally vote, there is a chance to send only one party to the house & senate in 2 years.

At least for NJ, the tax law SALT deduction cap had to be the biggest GOP political blunder ever. It even allowed a skunk like Menendez to be re-elected.
Mary Nagle (East Windsor, Nj)
I’d rather have a “skunk” like Menendez who allows people with pre existing conditions as my senator than Mr. MacArthur: He and Hugin, pharmaceutical cronies, were huge donors to Christie, one of the most destructive governors this state has had in a while. He and his republican “skunks” were far worse in their devious dealings than Menendez ever was. At least with “bad” democrats, the people get something tangible; with Republicans, empty promises and outright lies
RM (Vermont)
@Mary Nagle The Democrats has many honorable potential candidates who could have won the Senate election handily. Rush Holt, for example. Instead, they embraced a skunk. Embracing skunks make you smelly.
