My wife’s family is from Naples. Just curious but is this in Italian or is it in the Neapolitan dialect given it takes place in Naples?

Much of the dialogue is in Neapolitan with voice over and school scenes in Italian (IIRC). The original Italian version uses Italian subtitles to translate the Neapolitan dialogue. This element of the show (and book for that matter) will unfortunately be lost on US viewers. As will the distinction of Lenu's acceptance to liceo -classico- .

I always meant to read these books! Should I read first, or watch the series first?
James Gaston (San Miguel de Allende)
Read the books first. Always. They are really fine books.

Hard to say without having seen it. But there's an interior complexity in the characters that may be difficult to duplicate on screen. Yet just looking at these lead actors gives me the sense that they will ably serve Ferrante's vision, and perhaps, even enhance it.

Wow! Can't wait. Devoured everything by Elena Ferrante I could get my hands on. Her novellas are brilliant and compelling as well. She's been a big influence. Thanks for the insightful piece.

Me too , looking forward to Sunday.

Also looking forward to the adaptation, hesitantly.
