Review: Mike Birbiglia Is a Very Nervous Dad in ‘The New One’

My wife and I saw it Saturday night and we laughed through the whole thing. We just had a kid a year and half ago so that made it doubly relevant. Very funny I thought. And very good delivery.

Its not nonstop laughter, its a long set of connected stories. If you're looking for standup, go to a club for that. I loved it. But I'm a fan.

Must be generational thing- my husband and son saw this Saturday / my son laughed out loud and my husband thought it was unfunny and disparagingly dumb.

That's great that your husband and son go to see shows together! Perhaps the fact that they disagree about the quality of the show will add to the richness of the experience because they have something new to debate!

Bravo, Mr. Birbiglia! Saw your very funny show last week & I laughed like I haven’t in months. Thank you for that❤️

I've listened to Mr Birbiglia on XM radio channels for some time, and enjoy him every time. Some of the 'jokes' aren't funny -- and usually they aren't intended to be. He does a different routine from most stand-ups. And it's pretty cleverly addictive. His voice is 50% of his success, I think. So I'm delighted to learn he has this show, which I know I'll never be able to attend. I wish him all success, and none of the weird heartbreak that seems to accompany it.

@SGK, re "So I'm delighted to learn he has this show, which I know I'll never be able to attend." Given his high profile, it's impossible to imagine this won't eventually be filmed at least for the movie-theater presentations that have been catching on, or maybe HBO. This could turn out to be a unique experience in close-up, with this director. Or even an opening up, like what had been done with the one-person hit "Shirley Valentine," or "Hedwig," meaning a totally different but complementary experience where one adds to the other.

@SGK many of Birbiglia's early shows similar in style to "The New One" are on Netflix for you to enjoy. Well worth it and time well spent especially if you enjoy him on XM. "The New One" will likely end up there as well. Though each Netflix special is a stand alone, his shows carry some connecting themes and it might be even better to see him evolve comedically and humanely before you view "The New One". Though a comedian, he is very much the monologist in the Spauling Gray mode, but much less dark. Enjoy.
