Cruz blow it with shutting down government over opposing A.C. A.

Hot off the press, but not published by the NYT: a dozen migrants in the caravan filed a class-action lawsuit yesterday against President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security and others for alleged violation of their constitutional rights. The suits are being funded by Nexus Services Inc. through a civil rights law firm called Nexus Derechos Humanos (Human Rights). I guess you could call this biting the hand they hope will feed them. Wouldn't you have expected the NYT and other mainstream to have broken this important news? I wonder who is master-minding, bank-rolling and organizing this effort? Perhaps the NYT should investigate? Open borders is not a sound policy, and these seekers of economic opportunity must comply with existing laws and policies. And, as reported by the NYT, there are more caravans forming behind this initial one. Sounds like an invasion to me. I think Beto has his head in the sand and doesn't want to acknowledge the problems with illegal immigration and open borders.

In his high school and college yearbooks Mr. O'Rourke is referred to as "Rob" or "Robert," not "Beto." The use of the nickname Beto is most likely a political ploy to make him sound Hispanic/ethnic, which he is not.

I have been saying this for quite some time, the Democratic leadership has no new or original ideas. They live in a small bubble in Washington and in fundraising meetings or parties. Then they just won't listen to their voters. They all have to be forcibly retired or else they will drag the Democratic party into a permanent minority party. All we needed was one leader to say we have laws and we welcome refugees. By the way, this is from a problem America helped incubate in these small countries with our "banana republic" approach to fatten a few agriculture companies. And shipping back violent criminals well taught in our cities on guns and the mechanics of controlling illegal drug flow into the U.S. Who will admit it? not one politician will step up. Not one of them will also admit we need these workers for all sorts of jobs that Americans will not do. The day I see white Americans doing poorly paid dish washing jobs, gardeners or picking fruit and vegetables for ten, twelve back breaking hours or more a day is when I will become a believer. We are complicit, hypocrites and we are the enemy. Politicians only speak for us. Do we also address the demographic bomb the country is facing? Maybe I am throwing out too many ideas...

Good for you Beto....on so many levels! McCaskill and Bredersen you caved....perhaps one of the realities of current political life. I hope it made you at least cringe to follow Trump re: the caravan.

Democrats want to Abolish ICE and turn every city into a Sanctuary City. Beto has no long term immigration plan. His plan to make Dreamers citizens as well as make other undocumented people citizens does not address what he will do when future groups arrive. Some of his supporters claim he will hire more border agents but that does not address what he will do with those who make it to the USA illegally. Talking about stopping 'fear' and 'paranoia' is not an immigration plan. The fact is Beto won't Deport anyone. It is questionable if he will enforce any immigration laws. His supporters want to Abolish ICE. Beto is a great motivational speaker but he lacks any real plan on how he will handle deportations.

Paranoia key of e (The electorate)
After reading, I feel like I’m not quite clear what his platform is. He’s quoted talking about stopping paranoia but I wouldn’t call that a platform. Furthermore, it seems that his goal of stopping “paranoia” will be significantly damaged by the actions of his campaign staffers who appear to have conspired to circumvent campaign finance law and conceal the use campaign funds to provide supplies for members of the migrant caravan who have already arrived (legally seeking asylum) in the United States.

@Paranoia key of e If they concealed it, how did you know? Is that you, Ted?

What a fine piece of journalism. Full of opinion, innuendo and more opinion. A better alternative to this would be a discussion of the issues and facts; then an analysis of their affect on the campaign, and ultimately the voters.

Why do Democrats have such a hard time understanding the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration? We generously allow 1 million immigrants to enter our country every year in a fair and balanced manor from a diverse range of countries, rather than just ones who happen to be geographically close. Republicans want to respect our borders by turning everyone back who don't respect our generous immigration laws and simply want to cut the line. I'm curious, what is the Democrat plan for illegal immigration? What would you do with caravans of foreigners ready to storm the border?
Al (San Antonio, TX)
@Jerome All Senate Democrats voted for the Gang of Eight Bill in 2013, which would have given Trump much of what he wants now, including wall funding, 20,000 more border agents, e-verify, and a legal path to citizenship for the Dreamers (one of Trump’s four pillars). That is your answer.
ehillesum (michigan)
What exactly is the appropriate response that the leader of this country should make when thousands of Russian political operatives—oops, that is, thousands of Central American men and women are heading to the border to gain entry to the country the President has sworn to protect? We know what Mr Obama said in 2005 and the gist of that was what Mr Trump has said and what any leader of this country would say. The author’s affection for Beto’s kumbaya approach is apparent. But as Ben Shapiro would say to Beto, Facts don’t care about your feelings. And as the people of Sweden and France and other parts of Europe are learning the hard way, Mr Shapiro is correct.

While the White House bets on fear, Beto O'Rourke's message inspires and resonates with many. Will it be enough on November 6th? Polls indicate he may run short, but I hope they are wrong. Historically a non-voting state, Texas leads the nation in low levels of voter turnout, particularly in midterms. Turnout is stronger this time around and while we're breaking that low-set bar, we still have a ways to go. C'mon Texas, we still have today (November 2nd) to early vote until 7:00 p.m. and then Election Day on November 6th. Go Vote.
Bob (Smithtown)
The „positive“ message of liberalism is simple: give the government more money. Great.
Dougal E (Texas)
Trump animates a lot more than his base by focusing on illegal immigration. Here in Texas he also animates Latinos who have been here for generations, some of whom are descendants of those who were here before white Americans migrated in. I bet many readers of the NYT are unaware that Jon Cornyn won the Latino vote over his Democrat opponent when he was re-elected to the Senate in 2014.
Mr. Adams (Texas)
Beto is so popular because he listens and he always has a vision for a brighter future. It's a stark contrast to the Republican scare tactics and prophesies of doom and gloom. Trump wants us to believe we're under attack and our country will only be great when we've got tanks lined up on the border to keep out everybody. Beto wants us to take a look and realize our country is already great the way it is and a militarized border is a waste of taxpayer money.

"A survey released this week by University of Texas/Texas Tribune found that a majority of Texas voters would immediately deport undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S.” The media describes the people who want to deport the undocumented as racist. I wonder how the media would explain the survey’s finding that 23% of Hispanics strongly agreed with the statement that undocumented immigrants should be immediately deported. Another 14% of Hispanics somewhat agreed with the statement. The undocumented take jobs that Hispanic citizens and legal immigrants might otherwise have. The undocumented, by their large numbers, also push down wages. Their children crowd classrooms. They fill county health clinics, hospital emergency rooms, and hospital beds. The undocumented jam into affordable housing units, forcing many citizens and legal residents out on the streets. The undocumented have had only a few years of education. They cannot get good paying jobs so they pay little in taxes. Their taxes do not come close to covering all of the government services and subsidies they receive. They are being heavily subsidized by everyone else. As a large percentage of Hispanics are aware, there are many reasons to immediately deport all undocumented migrants.

@ann - You may be interested in two very informative WP articles on the subject. I think Trump is right to raise the alarm that asylum is not being used for its intended purpose, to provide sanctuary for those fleeing persecution but rather as a means of escaping poverty. The US asylum system is said to be on the verge of collapse (incidentally only 10% of rescued Mediterranean migrants brought to Italy were awarded asylum, which demonstrates this is not only a US problem). An excerpt: It’s not as though huge numbers of Central Americans are winning asylum, either. The latest statistics show that fewer than 10 percent of Central American applicants are granted asylum by an immigration judge, but it’s the act of coming over, applying for it and waiting for the legal process to play out that has become such an alluring way for impoverished migrants to live and work in the United States, if only for a few years. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2018/10/24/migrant-caravan-updates/?utm_term=.b6902026ec19 I was not able to select the second link for the article I noted, but in the URL above there is a link to "There is still one way to cross the border" that details the experience of two families who have crossed (one a previous deportee) and who are unlikely to be granted asylum. But it will take years for their cases to wind through the system, and they are here while in the meantime.

@ann Such a short term take. i thing we are here (USA) for the long term and we should take a long view.

We need more people like Beto who speaks from his heart. He's not concerned with being more aligned with certain ideologies to win a seat. He's telling you what he thinks is morally right. I really hope he runs for President one day. The people of Texas would be stupid to not send this man to Congress.
4Average Joe (usa)
We need a cast of characters, not just one person as president. In England they have a figurehead, the Queen, and the PM. We need a wonky president that sends a positive message, and we need a cast of characters, someone who can figuratively punch somebody'. One person cannot be all things to all people, and one person will inevitable say something under his or her breath, or -- whatever. A TV group, a twitter group. HBO was taken over by conservatives. Only a year or two before all the liberal programming is paved over by bad Trumpublicans-- they will make mooney behind the scenes for this service to the ruling class.

Trump, Liar in Chief, also mentally unstable in all other aspects, needs to be impeached. Now!

I feel as if I am drinking crystal clear toxic, free water after a parched trek through the dessert just reading about what Beto says. I am now a progressive and though I always felt very friendly towards people from either party before, I can no longer bear people who support and vote against their own self interest and mine too, by the way. And I am including the corporate Democrats and Nancy and Chuck and Tom Perez in my ban. And most certainly the Clintons, How dare that hubristic princess, with her corrupt foundation think she has a chance of doing anything but losing to the republicans again, hint at running again. Did she suddenly develop a heart and actually feels badly about how she and most of her party served their rich donors and forgot about wages stagnating and the struggling lower and middle classes? But I angrily digress. Thanks for this article Lisa. Oh boy I hope Beto wins and if he does not then poor Texas, stuck again with blatant corruption for all eternity , but maybe not. Seeds have been planted in that tough Texan soil anyway which will bloom later. Beto is not going to disappear, he has planted seeds in the whole nation that the rest of us who want all of us to thrive will tender and help grow. And of course, despite all the smearing of Bernie, I just love his platform and want him to be president. An honest man with a realistic plan that the corrupt from both parties fear, for the simple reason he will get money out of politics.
William Powell (Texas)
The only thing wrong with O’Rourke is that he doesn't even have one opinion that I think is correct. He may be cute and charming, but he is the antithesis of what is needed for Texas.
C. M. (El Paso,Texas)
@William Powelloh and Cruz is?
Robert (Out West)
If that was really what Claire McCaskill said, she doesn’t deserve to win.
Arthur in Cali (Lemoore, CA)
@Robert What is the magic number for asylum seekers at our southern border? How many should be allowed into the country? 7,000? 70,000? 700,000? At what point do we call it enough? It seems in the media and various opinion columns written that the answer is always danced around and never given.
MS (Mass)
@Robert, No, it is exactly why she will win.
Eloise (VA)
@Arthur in Cali Our do nothing Congress needs to answer that question, not media and talking heads. what a shame that they can only fund raise and campaign.
