Just a giant worthless time suck. I deactivated my account and don’t miss it one bit. There are far more productive things one can do...like actually interacting with real people, for one.

Every app seems to follow the like and follow concept - even a pro photo site I am on as well as pro networking sites for IT and on it goes. Even these comments have the subtle "like" in the form of "recommend". The egos must be fed.... please "like" this or that or I am not worthy. Very sad to see...

If Facebook actually cared about how their site negatively impacts democracy, they would shut the site down.

@WB But it's a very democratic platform. Anybdy can freely express themselves

Congratulations on using the appropriate picture of Facebook's front sign! I can't tell you how many media outlets use an outdate one.....CBS and 60 Minutes in particular. you can tell the correct sign by the address listed, the old one read "1600 Willow".

Mark must clearly be awake at night wondering what will become his college dorm beauty? The shine has come off the apple...and is in fact more than a little bit rotten.

I've seen a News Feed - Facebook Cable T.V. Ad in which some clown in a MAGA hat tells some woman that we've got to unite. Is Sinclair hacking my cable as well as "the platform"? It's disgusting --- got that algorithm correct there? --- Seriously? Take off the hat Trumper - Mark Zuckerberg - and try again. Unite. Uh huh.

I deactivated my account 6 months ago and I haven't missed it since. Feels like a weight has been lifted.

When it comes to its effects on politics and society, Facebook now is the equivalent of the nuclear bomb. The genie is out of the bottle. It may be possible to mitigate the destructive power through legislation, which would be better than relying on volunteer efforts. There may still be "rogue" platforms, but it could go a long way. The rest is up to users, who should just say "no".

I think the big question for Facebook (and Google and any other 'social media' platform which makes money by monetizing their data feeds to advertisers) is..."How do we reimburse our users?" It is time and certainly within the realm of technical possibility that each user of the platform to be reimbursed (lets say quarterly) for their contribution to the platform's largess. Wake up america..we are being fleeced by these platforms..for their own personal gain..and its time, well past time, for us to sit at that table To think of it differently..how much revenue would facebook receive if everyone just stopped using the app. And..if they don't want to pay..then boycott the app Personally, I got tired of arguing w/ ignorant people of politics..and it was galling to know that my thoughts/data/actions were enriching someone else..and not me.

@wfkinnc I stopped using Facebook about 6 months ago for the same two reasons you cite. Plus, that I was simply wasting too much time on it for no benefit.

Moving away from newsfeed defeats the purpose for which we customers use it. So called ‘private’ messaging ‘ is not. Default settings allow them to show up in Instagram, also owed by FB. Sooo? It’s not a fix: it’s a retreat.
Old Gray Mare (PNW, USA)
@MS Fitz, exactly. The Newsfeed IS Facebook. Without it, there will be nothing worth using. I think the problem is that they haven't been able to control it. It just morphed into something they didn't foresee. But in the long run, if it goes away, it might be better for the country AND the world, although I would personally miss it.
