What Are Your Passions?

I am fortunate to say that I have found something that I am passionate about, I know this because any sort of day I am dealing with I always end up happy. Basketball has a family of its own and if you didn't have a good day at practice your teammates will always be around to cheer you up. “There are moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” Ms. Vanderkam said." I believe that Ms. Vanderkam explains perfectly the way I feel about basketball. One reason why I am excited to go to college is that I know I will find something that I am passionate about academically, which I haven't been able to do yet. To find a topic in school that makes me happy, a topic that makes me want to learn.

One of my passions is running. Running is the best & worst sport there is, because it feels like death, but at the same time the runners high afterwards is like finding a one hundred dollar bill on the ground I used to hate running, my dad would make me run around the block 4 times a week. Obviously, being a preteen, I would walk & tell my dad I ran 6 laps, when in fact I walked 2 (he knew I was lying). When High School began, I decided to join the cross country team. I will be forever grateful for this decision because it allowed me to open up & make friends, which I was never good at. Most of the friends I made at cross country, have become some of my best friends. I started at my High School only knowing 3 people & now I feel like I know more people than I have ever known in my whole life. "When you say you don’t have time, what you’re really saying is, it’s not a priority." I disagree with this, because yes, running is my passion, but it is also a hobby. I run for my school because we have practice, but when I get home I have to try to cram all my homework in before I go to bed. If I didn't have practice after school & had to run on my own, I wouldn't. I would love to, but other things like school & jobs are more important.

I used to not know what my passion was. I used to think I was a very generic, ordinary person. Until one day I realized that I am different from others. I try to see the good in everything so that I can make a positive life for myself. I also believe that everything happens for a reason . Thats why when something bad happens, I think to myself, It happened for a reason. Because I want to help people, I believe I am meant to help people when I grow up. Passion is a very strong word to me. I believe it can mean many things. Someone can be passionate about something current in their life and then quickly get over it, or someone can dream of something their entire life, and never give up. Everyone has their own definition of passion. Mine is something that I hope my future will turn into to. I am very passionate about helping. I have been my entire life. I go to many charity organizations and fundraisers. When I grow up, I will do something that influences other peoples lives. I have made that a promise for as long as I can remember. I hope to influence others in a positive way. I hope that I am very successful life, that way I can make donations to organizations, or maybe even a friend in need.

One of my passions is reading. I love it so much and try to do it every day. When I learned to read, it opened a whole new world for me. I could read about whatever is wanted, my favorite genre being fantasy. I always try to read every day, because it makes me feel so good. Every night before I go to sleep, I read. I can forget about what happened at school, or what homework I need to do, I can just read. Like the passage says, reading does take away my stress. When Andrew Rea says, “I was cooking again, I was filming again, I was happy again, ” I totally agree with him. I feel way happier and energized. When I read, I can focus on that and nothing else, going to various make-believe worlds that are so inviting. It is so fun to see your siblings learn to love what you love. I am the oldest of my family, and I love watching my brothers and sister read the books I love and read as a kid. I can talk about it with them, and I love it so much. Whenever I finish a book, I immediately want another book to read. I especially love going to the library and borrowing six new books to read. Even if I can't read all of the at once, I am so excited I could finish all of them in a week. Even if this will never become a profession, I can still read books, knowing I will never have to stop. Rea says that even if his cooking isn't his career, the moments he spends doing it are worth it for him. You can never get to old to read, and I know I will never stop loving it.

I used to think that I had no passion, that I had no real drive or interest in anything. I thought that I was a depressed freak and that everything I was doing with my life was meaningless. It took me a very long time to get to where I am today, to be able to say that I have a passion for music. I spend so many hours listening to music and writing lyrics that I become lost to the world. It isn't uncommon for my throat to turn raw with hours spent singing (badly). In the article Laura Vanderkam advocated that finding time for yourself as a means to greater happiness over all. I completely agree with her, when I discovered my love for music and started writing lyrics about what I was feeling I started to feel better than I had in months. I started focusing my energy into writing lyrics and listening to music. Everything about music consumed me, I became entranced with every kind of music genre and it inspired me to change myself. My music is slowly shaping a passion for fashion that wasn't aware of before. My passion became an outlet for me, my lyrics became a journal and writing down how I was feeling was so therapeutic that I couldn’t stop. I don’t stop to this day, and I improve everyday. I would absolutely love to make a song one day that I produce myself, and music is ultimately what I want to do with my life, but I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet. For now, listening to music and writing lyrics is my passion and I could not ask for a better way to spend my time.

The article asks- "What else- if anything- has prevented you from following your passions?" This question has a myriad of possible answers... school, finances, location, time, all valid reasons. But I think often, one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is yourself. Like Rea, I have experienced times of extreme depression, and in those times my priorities and ability (or lack thereof) was all that was keeping me from doing what I loved. Art has always been a passion of mine, and during these periods, despite having hours of free time to draw and create and start new projects, all I seemed to do was lay in bed wasting time. Fear was another big reason that went hand in hand. I was afraid to start things because I didn't want to mess up, or disappoint myself, or dislike the result. If I couldn't meet the standards I'd set for myself, I didn't even want to try. But the only way to move past this is to buckle down and refuse to fail. It takes work switch over from seeing mistakes as failures, to seeing them as opportunities for growth. But just like Rea, when I pushed through and just began to work at what I loved, I was also able to rediscover my love for creating. The satisfaction of a finished piece is infinitely better than staring at a blank page.

My passions are reading and writing (nerdy I know). It all started when fell in love with reading in elementary school, and it continued from there. The endearing characters and exciting plots of a good book always drew me in. Sometimes, I would be so entranced by a story, that the outside world seemed to melt away. Fantasy intrigued me the most. I would marvel at how an author could craft an entire world from ink on a page and make me connect emotionally with a fictional character. This feeling of admiration eventually lead to my love of writing. When I write, I lose track of time. I’m no longer laying my bed, typing frantically into the night. I’m with my characters, exploring new places and facing the next adventure. One of the happiest feelings in the world for me is when I get inspiration for a new story. Everything seems fresh and full of untapped potential. I really got to tap into my passions this summer. I found several websites that not only allowed me to publish my writings for all to see, but allow me to connect with other writers. It’s been a great opportunity for me to mix my two passion, and I couldn’t be happier.

Ever since I could remember, I was interested in at least one field of science. My curiosity began with rockets, then astronomy, then robotics and is still continuing to change and shape itself. Since I have always been so interested in almost all the fields of science, I would say that the idea of science as a whole is my passion. I have always loved learning how things work and why they work and I think that is what really caused me to connect with scientific ideas more than anything else. I would often times get home from school and just look something up that no one else in my class could answer. This would normally lead me to a domino effect of needing to research more and more to just grasp the question I originally asked and that was the fun part to me. Currently, I have really connected with my passion for science via joining a robotics team. During the summer of 2018 I attended a robotics camp at NC State and enjoyed every moment of it while also getting a better understanding and appreciation for robotics. The camp definitely made me think more about looking for a career involving robotics. Once that camp was over and I headed back to home, I searched for anything that involved robotics and was close by. I was informed about a local robotics team by my mom that was allowing new members for the next season. I joined as soon as I could and I've enjoyed it dearly.

Passion is such a strong word, it can mean so many different things to different people. Throughout my life I've done many different sports or activities but wouldn't have the drive to peruse them past high school or later in life. An example would be soccer, I spent almost 11 years playing the sport on and off as a hobby but knew I couldn't call it a passion when I slowly strayed away from it for other things. The same thing could be said about jobs at this point in life, we as people spend so much of our time on things we just aren't passionate about. In the article Andrew Rea said he could barely get out of bed before starting his youtube channel. Getting out of bed in the morning is just as hard, sometimes even harder when I know i'm going to work. One thing I can say I am passionate about is architecture and engineering, the art of designing a certain thing. I've always been fascinated by crazy architecture and peoples ideas. In the future I would much rather work for myself or go into a field that I am passionate about than being stuck 40+ hours a week doing something that I dread.

My main passion is fashion. I love fashion because it is a physical attribute that represents, who you are and what you want to be. when I choose my daily clothing, I think of what represents me. what I can wear that would look presentable towards others (in my eyes). This passion of mine helps me relieve stress, and anxiety, so I can focus on what i want to do. Many artist in this day of age, are known for there style and fashion. It not only represents them, but it represents a piece of art inflicted within them. In my opinion if you have a passion, the time to pursue it is up to you. If your passion is strong enough, you should make time to contribute towards it on your daily schedule. personally I contribute to my passion everyday. personally for me, it is easier to express my passion then it would be for others. I contribute towards it everyday. knowing this, I have had no roadblocks when contributing myself towards my passion. The only thing that I could think of, is someone being offended by what I am wearing (which has never happened). I think any skill of yours could lead to a passion, so yes, I agree with Mr. Vanderkans quote. With the write support, and dedication, anything could happen, that could lead to a passion. Anytime i contribute to society I feel more fulfilled. when I volunteer places, or do something for the common good, i feel more fulfilled

My passions are soccer, baking, animals, and decorating. I really enjoy soccer and it makes me relaxed and happy. I agree with Vanderkam that, “Life just feels better when you have things in your hours that you want to do. There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” When I'm doing these things, it doesn't feel like work or extra things that I have to do. They bring me joy and I enjoy doing these things. I like animals, especially dogs, and decorating, especially around the holidays. When I do these things, I don't think about all of the work I have to do or how late I'm going to stay up doing it. I could see myself turning my passion for soccer into a career of some sort. It doesn't necessarily have to be playing professional soccer, but it could be a soccer related occupation such as physical therapy or athletic training. I play soccer as much as I can because I have fun doing it and I don't feel stressed. Soccer helps me explore and try new things and interact with different people. I can try new skills and push myself to be the best that I can be. I could turn baking into a career, but I'm more passionate about soccer and I could see myself really enjoying a career path involved with soccer. Baking also lets me try new things and create things. I like to be able to create things and manipulate them to the way I want, which I can also do with decorating.

Through the blur that has been my early childhood, one thing stands out very clearly: books. Within my father’s office, my sister’s bookshelf, and on my nightstand was always something new to be discovered, secrets to be told, and people to meet in the pages of a book. I met a mouse who was given a cookie and Sam I Am; later I discovered that Harry was a wizard and Percy’s father wasn’t exactly mortal. After some scarring events in my childhood, my love for their crisp vanilla pages only grew deeper, as if they were my wings, lifting me from what was going on around me. I read everything I could find, spent summer days in the library, and swiped volumes from my father’s office. Before I had even stepped into highschool, I had read many of the classics (Frankenstein was my favorite) and crossed off a satisfying amount of books from my “To-Read” list. Like Ms. Vanderkam said, “There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing,” I feel that I wouldn't have been the child I so often see in photos of that time of my life if it were not for my love of reading. Like the results in the study found in the article, I can say for certain that reading made me less stressed about my own world and less sad about what I was currently going through. Even though it was an escape, it kept me grounded and employed me with an imagination and countless characters to look up to.

pas·sion /ˈpaSHən/ Noun 1. strong and barely controllable emotion At first, looking at the true definition of the word “passion” intimidated me. The article states that a passion is " somewhere where the more time you spend in that zone, the better life feels." What was something that I felt so strongly about I could hardly control and suppress? What was something that the more I did, the better I felt?Something I couldn’t go a day without thinking about? The only thing I believe truly matches these criteria is traveling. There is nothing more liberating to me than going somewhere unknown and letting go of all previous expectations you’ve had. I grew up in the North African country of Morocco thanks to my wonderful parents who shared that love of seeing the world and have seen much of Europe and the Mediterranean. Experiencing different cultures and a way of living completely separate from the US, has been the primary thing that has shaped me into who I am today. I’ve learned so much and gained so much insight on the big picture because of it and I am so grateful. Traveling is my passion and that means that I am in love with the idea of not just seeing the world but experiencing it for yourself. I cannot wait until the day I can incorporate this love into something I do daily and I encourage you all to find something that truly sets your heart ablaze with burning passion.
Will Rose (Hoggard High School)
One of my passions is the beach. I absolutely love going to the beach, Probably my favorite thing to do. I go out on my boat all the time . Whenever I have had a long/ rough day I go to the beach. It's a safe and comfortable place for me. I love going swimming and fishing , It just something I have today. Once Winter comes around it makes it hard. When it's cold outside the beach isn't very enjoyable. In the article it says he could barely get out of bed. Today, he credits his show. If I didn't have the beach and I don't think I could get out of bed.
Jessica Swanson (Hoggard High, Wilmington, NC)
Andrew Rea turned his passion into a career. He found something that would get him out of his bed and out of a dark feeling that had surrounded him for some time. Do you think anybody could do this? Do you have to be in a dark place to find your passion? A person's passion is something they always have with them. And each person finds their passion a different way. Also not everyone has the same passion. Some people have a passion for cooking like Andrew Rea and others are passionate in animals, math, or art. A person should spend time participating in a hobby of theirs because in our week of 168 hours we only have 72 hours to us. That’s if you have a 40 hour work week and sleep eight hours a day. In those 72 hours we chose what we want to do and I believe you should spend most of that time doing something you love. Participating in a hobby of yours can actually lower your stress by 18 percent and make you a more productive person in the workplace. A passion is more than something you do. It’s a priority you set in your life to make you happy. Many people will say “I don’t have enough time,” and the truth is they're just not prioritizing a hobby of theirs. As seen we have 72 hours of free time in a week. What will you do with that time? I suggest following a passion that brings you joy.
Revelin Labrecque (Hoggard High School, Wilimgton, NC)
The thing that I'm most passionate about in my life is sports. Both track, where I jump and sprint, and soccer pop into my head when I think of something that makes me "feel more fulfilled". Besides my friends, these two activities are what help me stay happy and stop me from becoming depressed. I could do sports all day if my body didn't get tired and let me down. Its not something I would get bored of and its not something that I ever find tedious. When Ms. Vanderkam said that "time almost has no meaning" it struck a chord with me. Doing my math homework for thirty minutes feels like it was longer then my two hour training session for soccer. I do find it hard to establish a practicality with my passions. I'm far and away a better track competitor then a soccer player. My dad thinks that I could get a scholarship and go to college off of my jumping skills. The problem is that I love soccer way more. An actual career in soccer would make me way more happy then being a track star but I do like track and it feels more practical to put my time and effort into something that I'm good at. Its a constant balance for me but I'm fine walking that tight rope because I know whichever way I eventually fall I'm still gonna feel happy and fulfilled.
Benjamin Blankenship (Hoggard High, Wilmington, NC)
I found the passage written under,” Finding the time to get in the zone” the most compelling. The zone, one individual thing that the english language doesn’t have a word for and can only be described, but everyone as felt it before. Whether the feeling came from doing something people love or from zeroing in on work, the zone, that is created by pursuing a passion, is there. However, to best describe the feeling of pursuing a passion is the article points on happiness and the influence a passion can have on careers. Happiness, a feeling that is embedded in the best of memories. “The zone” can also be described as happiness. A study done in 2015 showed that,” participants who engaged in hobbies were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities.” The study showed that the feeling of being deeping committed to an enjoyable activity could also be described as happiness. Hobbies may not ever turn into a career, but they may help people learn lessons that improve a person's capability for a job. The ways passions make people feel can influence a career. The article says in reference to a man, who enjoys his job,” he rediscovered how using those passions could lead to a rewarding career.” In this case the man found a new feeling of enjoyment through his passions that he cultivated into a career. Overall an enjoyed activity can improve a person's happiness and career.
Avery McElhinney (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
When I think about my passions my mind automatically jumps to sports. When I was younger I was active in swim, tennis, soccer, and dance. I only play tennis now because it's what I am most passionate about today. I relate so much when Mr.Rae talks about how pursuing your passion makes you feel good. When I have had a long and stressful day at school and then I go to play tennis all the stress of that day is relieved. When I step out onto the court I feel the weight of the day lifted off my shoulders. Lately I haven't had time to play the sport that makes me the happiest. I am so caught up in school work, and I have always been told that school comes first above any other activities. I have made school my number one priority over the thing I love. I hope to get back into tennis because as Mr.Rae said,"pursuing your passion both lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness over all." I want to get back into my passion, and the sport that makes me happy.
Will Golder (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
The two main passions in my life are fencing and flying. I have been fencing since I was nine years old, and I have fallen in love with it. I first tried fencing because of my love for Star Wars. Within a month, I had decided that this was the sport that I was going to pursue. Since then, I have traveled around the country to tournaments like the National Championship and the Junior Olympics. When I am fencing, all of my stresses go away because I am completely focused on only what is right in front of me I completely agree with the article that pursuing your passions is therapeutic, and everyone should have some. My other passion, flying, is something I have been interested in for even longer. When I was about five, my grandpa got me a toy airplane. I loved playing with it and was super interested in how flying actually worked. When I was nine, for my birthday, my dad took me flying with an instructor. I had so much fun and decided that I wanted to get my pilot's license. Since then, I have amassed over 13 hours of flight time, and plan to solo on my sixteenth birthday. My passion for flying may one day turn into a career just like Mr. Rea's did.

Generations of my family have all been water-lovers; partaking in water skiing, snorkeling, boating, swimming, and SCUBA diving. All of my immediate family has their SCUBA certification, as well as myself. At first, I hated it and thought it wasn’t for me. I’d rather be swimming freely in open water, pushing off of the bottom and bouncing to the surface. But as soon as I was certified and put all that I learned to the test, I was at peace. All you can hear is your breathing and the bubbles accumulating in front of your mask. Getting into an environment full of sea life and a variety of plants makes you forget everything going on above the surface, and also focus on the fact that you’re breathing underwater. The article states, “Researchers found that participants who engaged in hobbies were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities, as well as for some time after,” which is very true in my case and for many other divers throughout the world. Whether in the pool, a spring, the ocean, or any other body of water you can fit in, just enjoying the silence and endlessly swimming without the need to go to the surface for air makes you lose track of time and fully engulfs you into the new, underwater world.

Everyone has a different hobby that they feel passionate about. Personally, my passion is creating things. I really enjoy DIY projects and although i'm not the best in art projects, I really enjoy partaking in the creative process. The thought of turning my passion into a career has crossed my mind when I was younger, but now i feel as if that would take away from the creative process. I would try to mold my creations into what others would like or what would be easy to sell rather than what I would want to make. I do arts and crafts not only because I enjoy them, but because they serve as a time of relaxation to me. Schumer shares, “A 2015 study published in The Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that pursuing your passion both lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness over all. Researchers found that participants who engaged in hobbies were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities, as well as for some time after” (Proulx, 2018, para. 7). I find that do DIY projects relieves built up stress and seeing the completed projects brings me happiness and a sense of pride. No matter what i decide to make, my mind is focused on that and anything that could be bothering me. Seeing the projects around my room also motivates me to make more and encourages me to think more creative. Anyone can find a hobby that calms their mood and gives them an escape from any stress they are dealing with.

To me, your passions are things that motivate you, or inspire you. Things you want to work for even though you know it may be a challenge. My main passions in life are cheer and dance. I feel like I do have the time and freedom to pursue my true passions. My favorite activities or passions are a big part of your weekly schedule and my time is not being taken up by things I don’t truly love. Every week I set time aside 6 out of the 7 days for my biggest passions. According to Natalie Proulx, when you are pursuing your passions, “Life just feels better when you have things in your hours that you want to do,”(Vanderkam, 2018, para. 6). In my opinion, if you have a passion, the time to pursue it is up to you. If that passion is strong enough, you should make time to contribute towards that passion. I am my happiest self when dancing/cheering and everyone has a different way of feeling this. Everyone should set enough time aside as they think they should to make themselves happiest.

I've been doing art since I was 5 and i absolutely love doing it. When I done my very first drawing, I was proud of it. I hardly do art anymore because I have been working, but when I do get the time, I would post online and see how many likes I get. I've been bullied in elementary school about my drawings, and I just got to the point where i really didn't care anymore. I have always tried to make my drawings look good, and I got to where I've gotten really good at it. Always try hard at everything, and maybe you'll get good at it, Just like I did.

@Trinity i like that you persisted despite the bullying , its probably what makes you a perfectionist and your art better. What do you feel when you post your art? i wonder if you stopped caring because art is what youre passionate about so nothing anyone said mattered

I have been surfing since I was about 6 years old. Ever since I caught my first wave at Cape Lookout, NC, I have been addicted. I only got to surf a few times a week, but when summer rolled around I was in the water pretty much every day. Whether I had a friend to go or not, I always found a way to get in the water. Once I turned 12, things started picking up. I would surf every day I could, and it became a huge part of my life. The attitude in the water and the feeling on a wave relieve any stress you have and make you feel amazing. I always found it fun to have something that I was good at, enjoyed, and was able to do with friends. Recently, I have started surfing competitively. Thhere is no surf team at my school, so I do it through ESA. Although it is slightly more competitive, it still has a very positive and supportive attitude pushing you to improve. I have not yet won a competition, but I have made finals and continue to have a blast.

When I think of the word passion the first thing that comes to mind is being active through sports and in my church. I am very passionate about these two things because they put me at a state of ease. Playing sports has always been a passion of mine. It keeps me healthy and it is just something that I love to do. Whether its kicking a soccer ball in my backyard or playing in a state playoff tennis match I pour my heart and soul into it. Being active makes you feel good about yourself and makes me want to commit to everything that I do. Being active in my church in my church is something I have participated in since I was a little kid. Going to youth group and taking what I learn and applying it to the outside world is what I live for. It's knowing that you can make a difference in other people's lives if you take the chance to get to know them better. Its becoming friends with someone that you know has been going through a rough time. These small acts of kindness is something I am very passionate about and strive towards in my everyday life. Overall being passionate about something is loving it with your whole heart and sharing it with the rest of the world. Even if you think your passion will not make a difference in the world, I can assure you that if even one person is changed by what you do then it is all worth it.

One of passions is music. I play two instruments the piano and viola. In the article when it discusses that doing something you love makes you lose track of time, is something I completely agree with. I never noticed before but I do lose track of time when I’m playing. It’s only when I feel a dull ache in my wrists is when I notice how much time has passed. I just get so engrossed trying to perfect my pieces that I can sit still going over the same section for a hour til I’m satisfied with the sound.

For as long as I can remember, I've always been intrigued with all forms of reading and writing. Whether it be enjoying a fantasy novel in the comfort of my bed or creating my own little world all in my notebooks, I’ve always felt like a creative person. Up until I entered high school, writing for fun was always something I did when I had free time on the weekends. You could see the effects of constant creative writing leaking into my essays for school. Now, it feels more like a chore than a hobby. All of the bland essays and assignments have slowly leached away at a passion I once valued above everything. We get the same repetitive assignments over and over until there’s nothing interesting left to write about. Whenever my English teacher announces a new project, I can feel my heart beginning to race like it once did, aching for some kind of muse to kick start my old passion again. But each time, my creative flow is hindered by page after page of guidelines and requirements I hope soon my teachers can find the time to let us explore our own voice in our writings. I especially hope that I can regain my old passion and let it flow, write and write and write like I never even stopped in the first place.

When I was little I remember, waking up on Saturdays, running on the turf, and kicking around a checkered ball hoping to one day score a goal. That was in the spring. I also remember the cold harsh breeze that would come on winter days, just to walk in the gym wondering, will I score a layup or shot today. since I could walk I have memories of sports. I've bonded over sports, I've learned through sports, and I've always been happier playing sports than sitting inside on a nice day outside, even if it was raining or cold. For the last five years, I've lived in Bulgaria, a small European country. the first way I made friends was through sports. This lead me to a lot of great friends that I've kept up with to this day. For athletics, some of the small European countries would have copitions that I compited in. Through the competitions, you also were sure to meet someone new. these compitions were hots spots of cultrueal inteactions and exchanges. I also learned life lessons, that I will carry for my whole life, while doing sports. for exapmle a work ethic. the time, sweat, and physical enery that I've put into sports has taught me hard work. this has also tranfered over to school work where if I need to study I can work for hours on it. unfortualty, in the futher as I get older I dont know if sprots will still be a big part of my life. I still wish to partipate in these types of activeis. however, fo the rest of my life I will have the lessons sports have thaught my.

As soon as I read over the questions pertaining to this article, I knew exactly what I would be writing in the comment section. All my life I’ve been involved with some type of sport, particularly basketball. I spend about two hours every day trying to perfect layups, foul shots, and meet the expectations of my coaches and family. However, the ball leaving my fingertips and soaring through the air is nothing compared to the feeling of watching a character develop throughout my story. The sound of squeaking shoes on the court doesn’t even hold a flame to playing out a scene in my mind. When I’m writing I’m taken to another world. The things I can’t control in my life, I can control in my stories. Writing helps to not only take away stress and anxiety from school, but gives me a second chance to do things a different way. I can read over my work and truly be proud of what I’ve done. I can create images in people’s minds, change how they look at things, and even make someone reflect on their own life. To me, that is something to be more than passionate about

My main passion is fashion. i love what fashion because it is a physical atribute that represents, you inner charcteristics. when i choose my daily clothing, I think of what represents me. what i can wear that would looking presentable towards others (in my eyes). this passion of mine helps me relieve stress, and anxiety, so i can focus on what i want to do. many artist in this day of age, are known for there style and fashion. this is because it not only represents them, but it represents a piece of art inflicted within them. in my opinion if you have a passion, the time to pursue it is up to you. and if that passion is strong enough, you should make time to contribute towards that passion. personally i contribute to my passion everyday. personally for me, it is easier to express my passion then it would be for others. i contribute towards it everyday. knowing this, i have had no roadblocks when contributing myself towards my passion. the only thing that i could think of, is someone being offended by what i am wearing (which has never happened). i think any skill of yours could lead to a passion, so yes, i agree with Mr. Vanderkans quote. with the write support, and dedication, anything could happen, that could lead to a passion. anytime i contribute to society i fee more fulfilled. when i volunteer places, or do something for the common good, i feel more fulfilled

My passions are dance and helping people. I feel like I always make time to help people and to dance. I go to dance after school 3 times a week, and I also participate in dance during the weekend too. I even volunteer at my dance studio. I help teach children with disabilities how to dance. It’s really fun for me. I have always done dance, ever since I was little. I have always liked it, and all the girls in my family took dance when they were younger too. I really liked it because I thought that it could help relieve me of my stress and because it was fun. I always try to take dance and I will always try to. The only thing that prevents me from being able to do more dance is the fact that between dance and homework, I have almost no time to do anything. Homework is a lot because each teacher has their own homework. Dance classes are usually super long and they take up all of my time. My parents are really big on my love of dance and me doing things that are meaningful to me. They don’t want me to do anything I don’t want to do. I used to play soccer, but didn’t like it, and they let me quit. They are also big on volunteering in the community. I am really good with people, so it makes me good with volunteering. I will try to volunteer more with the dance studio so I can help people out more.

Passion, a word, to me, means something you put complete devotion and time into; not just a hobby. Over the years, I’ve gone through phases of passions; surfing, circus, dance, running. One although as stuck with me and has helped me pursue all of those, gymnastics. When I was ten months old, my mom and I did a “mommy-daughter” gymnastics class and since then, I’ve loved it. As of right now, I don’t take classes, but every night, like clockwork, I stretch and practice such things as splits, handstands, tucks and much more. I am so proud of how far I’ve been able to push myself. I used to not even be able to do a backbend. My old circus teacher said I’m the most flexible student she’s ever had, even more, flexible than her. Being able to bend my body and have such great coordination has helped me with all of my past passions, one of which was surfing. That helped with balance. Gymnastics has changed my life and I’m so glad I’ve kept up with it over the years.

To me, your passions are things that motivate you, or push you, or inspire you. Things you want to work for even though, or maybe especially, because you know it'll be a challenge. One of my passions in life is rock climbing. Ever since I started climbing, about 2 years ago, it has consistently been something that's pushed me in the best possible way. While climbing is definitely a sport that pushes you physically, mental fortitude is a huge part as well. The ability to keep getting up after every burn of a route and come back from every fall and failure just as motivated as the first attempt is something I had to build and learn, but it's an ability I am so grateful for and have been able to apply in my everyday life. Growing my climbing abilities and watching my physical strength grow is amazing, but one of the best parts of climbing is the community. Climbing is really everybody's sport. No matter the age, skill level, body type, or age, anyone will be able to find a way to challenge themselves and feel accomplished, and the people around you are never anything but encouraging and helpful. We all know the joy of sending your project, and if a little beta or encouragement is what helps the climber next to you get there, everyone is happy to provide that. I wholeheartedly believe that climbing has made me a better, happier, and healthier person.

I’m passionate about a lot of things, but engineering is what really excites me. In particular, I enjoy Mechanical Engineering, due to my admiration for machines. My passion hasnt affect my daily life yet. However, my passion for engineering is what drives my goals. I’ve known for quite some time that I wanted to do engineering as a career. I constantly imagine what fun it must be to be an engineer, getting to be paid to create ideas and build machines. However, life wouldn’t be realistic if it weren’t for obstacles. One major obstacle I face right now is time. I spend most my time away from school practicing competitive swimming or working on homework. As such, there is not much time left to think about ideas and machines that I could start conceptualizing. The second and the arguably biggest obstacle is my self-doubt. After entering middle school, I started having self-doubt issues, feeling I was less than my peers. I had just moved away from Halifax County, North Carolina, and its education system was behind New Hanover County. This would cause ms to struggled to catch up my sixth-grade year. Ever since then, I’ve always second-guessed myself. These feelings, however, just slip away when I have my hands on a machine. For example, I was working for my grandfather one summer, and he taught me how to cut a straight edge. I felt so accomplished when I was making something with my hands. I can confirm with the utmost certainty that passion can relax your mind.

I have always had a passion for sports. I have always enjoyed the burst of energy during the activity. I have always enjoyed all type of activity just to get outside was enough for me. Sports factor into my life by keeping me active and happy, you always feel better after completing your activity. As much as I enjoy sports I think once it becomes a career it loses the fun of being able to pick and choose when you want it. I do believe that it is a great way to relieve stress or even to make yourself feel better, not only do they take your mind away from the stress, they relive you of it temporally afterwards. Adults would always push my into doing sports, but I would always gladly do it and do as much extra as possible, so no I would say it was my choice to play sports. Currently I do not feel like i have as much time, but I feel that I am able to make it work and find the perfect balance, and build them in every week. I do believe everyone should find a passion, it makes you feel better, and is enjoyable while you are doing it. I do believe it is completely true that is can make you feel accomplished every time you complete you feel better as a person, and you feel like you spent your time well. The last time I ran for cross country I felt fulfilled afterwards like I got good exercise and it was almost refreshing.

Everyone has a passion from swimming, science, or an occupation they want to fulfill. No matter who you are or how many actives you do everyone has one thing they really love. Mine is to be a veterinary, but I don't want to just be any veterinary I want to be a veterinary in the Army Veterinary Corps. Finding this organization has been motivating to keep going. That's what a passion does for people it keeps them moving through life. It keeps people waking up each day and getting out of bed. Having a passion is something that makes people happy and lowers stress. If someone has a passion about something they need to go out and fulfill it. Maybe even turn it into a job. Like the quote "If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life" Joining the Veterinary Corps would be so amazing because I could help save animals and serve my country at the same time. Becoming a veterinary is more to just saving animals for me. It's the normal yearly check-ups that make sure your pet is okay. It's the flee medicine we send home with the humans so the animals don't get bitten. Being a veterinary is so much more then playing with animals. It's treating them and making sure we do the best we can to treat an animal. Being a veterinary is my passion.

In my family growing up, every kid was to have multiple hobbies; usually one musical instrument, a sport, and some other miscellaneous passtime. All other avocations slowly blurred together, until I tried soccer. At a young age my soccer “hobby” quickly turned into a passion. The years following my groundbreaking discovery were flooded with soccer games, new cleats, and the extinctions of all my other extracurricular activities. Soccer had become my soul devotion. I loved all aspects of the game, truly, but all the tactics, drills, and setplays is not what sold me. It was the spirit of the game, more specifically the team spirit. The game is centralized around the masses instead of the individual. You play for the team, you work for team, and you love your team. Soccer has taught me that it’s not always going to be about me. That sometimes you work hard and compete for your team. Soccer has been my family
Sydney Stathopoulos (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
I have a lot of passions, but my main passion is skateboarding. Skating isn’t usually a girls sport, but I don’t care. I’ve had people tell me I suck, but it’s okay. It doesn’t matter what other people think about what you’re doing as long as you love to do it. The reason why I love it so much is because you’re not on a team with a bunch of people telling you what to do, it’s just you and your board. You can try whatever tricks you want to try and nobody can tell you not to, that you can’t, or that you’re doing it wrong. Sometimes when I’m having a really bad day, I know I can just go home, go skate, and I always feel 100% better. That’s not an exaggeration either, it just makes me feel free, which is nice since I’m stuck in a classroom all day. It’s really hard to find time to skate at home or go to Skateparks because of school and soccer. It’s mainly because of school, but soccer also takes up a pretty big chunk of my afternoon, even though it’s only one day a week. I feel like I have too much pressure on me from my family and my teachers to play soccer or do bunch of homework. Everyday I wish I could just skate all day, but I’m always stuck doing something else. Don’t get me wrong, I love soccer, but I’d rather be skating. I wish I didn’t have so much homework because I want to be outside skating, but I never have time. Although I can’t skate because of other things I have to do, it’s always worth finding the time because doing what you love is one of the best feelings.

pas·sion /ˈpaSHən/ Noun 1. strong and barely controllable emotion At first, looking at the true definition of the word “passion” intimidated me. What was something that I felt so strongly about I could hardly control and suppress? Something I couldn’t go a day without thinking about?
Frank Lyons (Hoggard)
I really enjoy swimming and din it very enjoyable. It definitely factors into my day to day life because I swim almost everyday. I find this to be a real passion and it brings me pleasure, I can use it as a time where I don't have to think about my other problems and just grind. It's also impossible for your brain to be sad when you are swimming fast. Right now I am able to presume my passion and I hope I can keep it that way.

Ever since I was little I have had a passion for music. I am completely in love with this style of expression. From playing instruments, singing, writing, or just listening to other artists’ music, inspires me in a way that nothing else does. I love analyzing every detail in songs because there is so much more to music than just a catchy chorus. It is filled with powerful words that have the ability to change how someone is feeling, and they could change their life because of it. Music has no boundaries which allows artists to make music that they are passionate about, and people listen to it because they can relate to it. The composition of songs are incredibly fascinating to me. It’s the little things, like how the beat changes on one part of the song in order to emphasize the emotions that the artist put behind the it, or how an album ends with a ballad in order to wrap up the musician’s thoughts. It is an art form where so many artists have platforms that transform people's lives in unfathomable ways. Music is a passion that I have had my entire life, and I think I will always love it because it is constantly evolving. Any job that revolves around music of any sort would be my dream job. I don’t care if it’s working on the business aspect or purely on the art, I am passionate about all aspects of this creative outlet, and wouldn’t change a thing about it.

When I think of the word passion, my mind always wanders to the things in my life that I desire to achieve and assist in expanding other's knowledge about. Two things I am passionate about are writing and psychology. These are two subjects that both inspire me and push me to pursue my future goals. I have always taken a liking to writing. I've always discovered myself finding solace within the papers of a journal and a pen in my hand. I believe writing is something that has helped me express myself and feelings in the times where I couldn't find my own voice and allows me to convey my thoughts creatively. Psychology is a subject that I have strived to learn more about and assist others in. Growing up with a mental illness, I have always desired to help others in their struggles and paths, having a personal connection with many. I enjoy listening and giving advice on many matters and have a passion to raise mental health awareness and removing stigmas associated with mental health. Passion to me is not just a hobby, but a certain figure or matter that gives you a feeling of purpose and strives you to be a better person. They you to execute your goals and represent yourself in a crowded world. I love writing and psychology because they grant me the ability to express myself and chase my passions.
Gracie Sistrunk (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
When someone says the word passion it takes me to endless hikes, the chill of ocean water in January, and all of the elements of our natural world that has yet to be explored. I have always been passionate about nature. Ever since I was about 5 or 6 my parents would take me on hikes in the Adirondacks, and they would always say how I would run up that mountain, so eager to get to the top. I also remember the countless walks on the beach with my mom, collecting shells and chasing sea gulls. Thinking about these happy, stress free times, reminds me why I am so passionate about it. Lately I have found myself losing touch with my passion. With the stress of school and extra curriculars, I have found it rather difficult to pursue my passion. Fortunately for me, I have suddenly been inspired by an article I most recently read called "Why following your Passion is Good for you" by Lizz Schumer. There was a part in her article that really spoke to me, and that was when she mentions how pursuing your passion alleviates stress and increases happiness. After reading this I feel more encouraged than ever to pursue what I love, and release some of the stresses every student has to face. I hope to see many hikes and walks on the beach in my future, and that I can finally get back to doing what I love.

I'm passionate about children. From a young age, I've loved taking care of, befriending, and just having fun with other kids. As I've gotten older, I've come to notice that not everyone has the same connection with kids that I do, and it wasn't till October of 2017 that I realized they are my passion. Like Mr.Rea, I went through a time when I was struggling to find something that I was good at, but also enjoyed. Trying to find this passion that was missing from my life became discouraging, and it didn't help that the rest of my friends had found their fortes. It wasn't until 4 years of searching for a passion, that I found one. Fast forward to November of 2018. Ever since I found my passion for kids, I've been immersing myself into the surrounding of kids. I do child care at my church multiple times a week, babysit when I can, and I have earned the spot as a camp counselor at a camp that I've been attending for eight years. This passion I have has brought many opportunities my way. Not only has it provided me many jobs, but it has allowed me to connect with people and families across the world. From Wilmington, NC to West Point, Mississippi to Melbourne, Australia. I am so grateful to have a passion that I can continuously improve on and turn into a career I love one day.
Ella DesChamps (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Finding something that you are passionate about and pursuing it can be very beneficial and productive in your life. Why would you want to spend your life doing things that you don't want to do or don't feel motivated to accomplish when you could be pursuing your passions? When you find yourself doing things you love, it causes happiness and can even be credited with helping people that suffer from depression, as we saw with Mr. Rea. He found himself in a dark hole, with no motivation to do anything until he combined his two passions, food and film making and created a YouTube channel that has since taken off and brought him a ton of popularity and happiness. People who have passions have been found to be 34% less stressed and 18% happier than people who have no passions in life. It also brings great success when people step out of their comfort zones and try new things and they may even find a new passion.
Maddie Lewis (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
We all have our certain passions that helps clear our minds, but sometimes we get the term passion and hobbies mixed up. A passion is something that you love doing or gives you a sense of purpose. As for me playing soccer is one of my biggest passion/hobbies. Just as I go to touch the soccer ball and step on the field, everything just clears out of my mind. While playing soccer it gives me a challenge to how hard I play and the level of team we play. During Mr. Rea's experience he stated, " that pursuing your passions both lowers stress and contributes happiness all over." This shows me as well because as soon as I do step on that field I feel like a totally different person and all my focus is on the game now. The numbers of people "engaged in hobbies are 34% less stressed and 18% less sad." After my parents introduced me to this sport at a young age I feel that I have become more passionate over the last 10-12 years. My skills has not only improved but my dedication to this sport. Last weekend we competed in a soccer tournament here in Wilmington, and ended up winning all of our games, competing against many challenging teams. Without soccer I would not be where I am today!

Everyone has that drive, that one thing that keeps them going. Some call it a purpose, some call it a passion. Your passion is as individualized as your personality, and varies as such. Many people know what that drive, that passion is, while some are still searching. A passion means something different to each person. My passion, is to cook. I have cooked since I was little. Starting out with a simple toast my mom helped me make, up to spaghetti and meatballs out of the box then to creating my own dishes. The kitchen is a place where I feel comfortable, and it’s one of my favorite things to do. The aromas of the mingling flavors and spices give me my purpose. I started off cooking when I was very young. It wasn’t proper cooking as I see it now, but when I was a little boy travelling around the world, it was. I was the chef of the kitchen, the master cook. I have a vivid memory of creating my first “masterpiece”. To me, it was a marvelous, groundbreaking, rule-bending dish, one that would be praised around the world. To others, it was a simple grilled cheese with a tomato soup on the side. But I was proud of it. It was the first thing that I had ever made on my own, and it truly sparked my passion of cooking. I love to cook, it’s my passion. It’s something that gives me purpose and meaning. Everyone eventually needs to find that purpose if they wish to live to the fullest. Your passion is what defines you. So I end this by asking you: what is your purpose?
Katya Zouzias (Hoggard Wilmington North Carolina)
Every life has a sole purpose or passion that just would not be the same without it. Most people mix up hobbies and passions, sadly I am one of them. I would have to say being creative and building art with my own hands is something I am very passionate about. Something about about having several materials and combining them to make an end result of my own masterpiece intrigues me. Recently I have not had enough time in the day to do what truly makes me feel free. During the summer I would always wire wrap pendants and make money from doing so. People would get to share my artwork with their friends and family. When people would tell me about all the compliments they would receive on their necklaces it always delighted me. Since school started I have not been able to create many pendants due to the long process it is just to make one necklace. Recently I have been painting with watercolors and creating little pieces of art. I keep my watercolor paintings to myself and keep them in the privacy of my room as decorations. Years ago I would sew all the time and create wallets for my friends and once even made a birthday card out of fabric. My sister Hyla, is very talented at crocheting and sells articles of clothing she designs on her website. She even taught me how to crochet and would always help me make hats and scarfs. Pushing my boundaries and making things that are out of the ordinary thrills me. I will never stop being creative knowing it makes me happy and unique.
Jordan Gourville (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Ever since the age of two, dance was always on my mind. The feeling I would get when I stepped on a stage gave me the most accomplishing feeling in the world. Ever since that day, I've never stopped dancing. I train hours upon hours to perfect this wonderful art that I'm so lucky to be passionate about. This impacts my life every day because I have learned my strengths and weaknesses through this artist platform. I have learned how to find power within myself and teamwork through working with others. This article really spoke to me because I have always had my passion for dance as a priority in my life. While many adults in my life tell me that I should only focus on being a high school student, this was the first article that I've read that agrees with my opinions on following your passions. When the Annals of Behavioral Medicine talked about their study and found, "pursuing your passion both lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness over all," that made me realize that I'm doing what is right for my mental health. Through balancing school and dance, I have increased my ability to time manage and I am as happy as I can be. Though my passion of dance has caused me to provide lots of time, energy and money into this art, there is nothing that could hold me back from doing what I love. Passion is such an important part of life and I'm so glad that the NYT is acknowledging this, especially for readers like me.

Music is and always will be something I am extremely passionate about. Whether it's writing music, playing music, or simply listening to music, my passion for it is incredibly strong. I have considered going into a musical career several times. I would like to say I'm serious about it but I haven't been able to even think about it due to the piles of assignments and flashcards and projects I've had this year so far. My days are spent going to school, getting home and doing more school work. Sometimes I also have practice or tutoring after school. Sadly, I can't even remember the last time I picked up an instrument. I used to play all kinds of instruments, piano, guitar, drums, ukulele. I've also written music. I just haven't had a lot of time to really sit down and enjoy this passion of mine lately. Typing this response made me sad as I realized music hasn't been apart of my life lately. I would like to add that it has also inspired me, as I will try harder now to include music in my daily activities and make time for it, even if it's only a little.
Ana Elrod (Hoggard High School)
A feeling like no other, when the stage lights are beaming on your face, which is covered in thick, heavy makeup. While you move seamlessly in the uncomfortable costume, that is poking you in about ten different places, yet it is helping you portray your story so it is worth it. Your heart is beating out of your chest, while your stomach is filled with butterflies. Yet, crazy enough all these nervous, uncomfortable feeling go away and you just dance. You let your soul and passion pour out of you while you move gracefully across the stage. The whole two minutes flies by and next thing you know you’re off stage being overwhelmed by your amazing, supportive friends telling you what a great job performing you did. Dancing has always been my passion, since my first dance recital at age three.

When I think of the word "passion," I think about someone giving all of their soul into something they love. I've had many passions growing up, but I grew out of them at some point. My passion is running; it gives me new challenge and I feel proud every time I accomplish a run. At first my parents forced me to run to get fit for soccer. Just like Vanderkam said, "when you did activities as a kid... there was an adult that forced you to go." I despised going to the extreme and intense workouts, until the coaches saw potential in me and asked if I wanted to be on their 13-14 girls cross country team. Ever since I received that opportunity, I became motivated to get faster and improve. Every time I do a workout, I always approach it as a new challenge. It is always something different each day, and at the end of each run I always feel proud that I accomplished something difficult. I now run for my school's cross country and track team, and in my first year of being on both teams, I made varsity, and I qualified for the regional and state met in both seasons. Just recently I competed in the NC state cross country meet, and finished it with a great time. Without the help of my family, I would not be as successful as I am today in running.
Jenny Braswell (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
I have had many different hobbies but my passion for running has remained true. I remember in third grade I began running with my friends and gym teacher through a program called Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a program that helps teach girls about self-respect and healthy life choices through running activities with the end goal of running a 5k. I did this mainly because my dad was a runner and wanted me to enjoy it like he does. So every week I ran with my friends until the 5k, where I placed third in my age group, and ahead of the others from my team. Fast forward a couple of years to middle school where I did not like running. I would only run when my dad would have to practically push me out of the house. One of the reasons I did not like running was because my friends didn’t like it either. The reason not many people like running is because it is a process that takes time, you can’t just go from being a couch potato to running a marathon. Then my freshman I decided, to do cross country. And I loved it, I enjoyed getting to run with people my age who also enjoy running. When I’m running all of the stress I have from school doesn’t matter because I just focus on breathing. Just like Laura says “The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” When I am running all I worry about is running and when I get done running I have a clear mind to go home and do the schoolwork that needs to get done. Overall I enjoy running and hope to continue with it.

I've always and always will have a deep passion for reading. Being able to escape to fantastical worlds and experience lives other than my own is truly one of the best parts of my life. It is one of the fastest ways for me to relieve stress or anger. Sometimes I'll start reading and suddenly the whole day will have passed by. As Laura Vanderkam said, “There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” Sometimes my own life becomes too overwhelming and I need to stop thinking for a while, and the best way to do that is through reading. My passion teaches things that I otherwise couldn't learn and lets me gain new perspectives on life. I am so grateful that reading is a part of my life.

I think it’s safe to say one of my passions is dancing. I am a part of a competitive dance studio in Raleigh, North Carolina even though I live in Wilmington. I drive two hours Monday-Wednesday and stay up there on the weekends for dance classes and rehearsals. I have classes from about five o’clock to about ten o’clock Monday through Wednesday, so I don’t get home until a little after midnight. I am always tired, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything (except the studio being closer). I get to do what I love everyday and have so much fun doing it. I’m reminded of my determination and commitment every drive up there. When I dance, I’m truly myself. I can tell stories and bring people to their feet without saying a word. It’s magical. I am looking forward to a career in pursuing my passion. There is nothing I would rather be doing. You get a sort of rush while you’re dancing that is hard to express. When you dance, you can connect with people, entertain others, or just have fun. There are so many styles and variations to how and why you dance which to me is so spectacular.

Throughout my life, I've tried lots of things to pursue as an "official hobby," but nothing has stuck with me quite like art. Visual arts has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I grew up surrounded by art. My parents are artists, so they encouraged me to express my creative side, and I guess that part of me hasn't left. I particularly enjoy drawing with pens because of the way it looks; it's very clean and precise. I like pencil drawing too, which is convenient because I can doodle on the sides of all my school papers while procrastinating. Drawing is something that helps me relieve stress after a long week; it's something I can do just to pass the time I may have throughout the week as well. I also love writing; a few years ago in school when we started to actually learn how to write things like poetry, I realized how easily it clicked for me. It became an opportunity to organize my thoughts on paper, while adding my own spin on it through details and descriptions. These days, I find myself typing out ideas on my phone between classes, or organizing my thoughts in my head to write down later. Writing is a part of my life now, and I wouldn't have it any other way. In the original article, Schumer writes about how pursuing your hobbies for just a few minutes a day can make a difference, and I definitely agree. Drawing and writing throughout the week or even between assignments can make the pressure of school much more bearable for me.

My passion is exercising and working out. When I started, I saw working out as just a way to stay healthy. But as I continued to do it, I realized how good I felt after I was done. It helped me relieve stress while also keeping my body in good shape. I find time every week to go the YMCA and it is my choice to go. When I was younger, I would dread soccer practice because I did not enjoy it and my parents forced me to go, so I found out soccer wasn't for me. This was also how I felt when I first started working out. It hurt, I got exhausted really quickly, and I felt like I was wasting my time. But I stuck with it, and I used this anger to start pushing myself even more to where I felt confident. Although I feel that I have more undiscovered passions. A main reason I feel I haven't discovered more of my passions is school. Ever since elementary school, the rule was that as long as I had good grades, I can keep my privileges. As school got harder and harder, I have had less time to try new things. Although, I do think that I still have some time to explore more activities; I just don't. School does however provide a sense of fulfillment for me when I do well on tests or please my parents. So I feel that my main job at my point in life is to sharpen my school skills, and find my passions as I go through school and even after.

For most of my life swimming was my passion. For years I lived, and breathed swimming, then that fire of passion for swimming began to fade. I didn’t know what to do, as long as I could remember I swam and I couldn’t imagine a time when I wouldn’t be apart of the sport. Then came my freshman year of high school. My mom urged me to joined the high-school cross-country team, and I hesitantly gave it a go. Mr. Rea had it right when he states “If you open yourself to new experiences by gradually stepping outside your comfort zone, you can find the things that truly make you happy” because after my freshman year all the doubt and nervousness was gone. I had found a new passion. I immediately had a connection with the sport after my first cross country race. When I run my mind goes completely blank and it’s just me and the path ahead. I get a surge of energy I never had experienced before when I pass another runner and when I go through the shoot to the finish line I feel like I’m flying as I race to the end. I would have never found this passion if it weren’t for my mom convincing me to join the cross country team and since then I have only had success not only on the course, but emotionally as well. I have become more confident in myself, and I feel like I have a fresh new purpose. I will always have a love for swimming, but sometimes we need to let the things that we think we love the most go and look deep inside ourselves to find what truly makes us happy.

Though most of my time will always be taken by sleeping, school, and other life necessities, I still manage to find hobbies for the remaining time of my day. I am an active member of band, concert and marching, for four years and two years respectively. That averages to about two hours a week outside of school. That leaves me with little time to do anything other than what has been previously mentioned. However, I often fill the time with something not many people know I do: graphic design. I love to see the beauty that my keyboard and mouse can yield. A successful endeavor leaves an elation and pride that sticks whenever I see the image again. However, I am suppressed by the rigorous competition known as school. I am expected to maintain excellent marks in my classes, and as most people know, takes priority in the majority's eyes. With each generation the bar is getting higher and higher, soon the quota will be out of reach. I learn and practice visual design so I can express what is happening in the deepest reaches of my mind. It's a trade and a potential job opportunity if I reach that point. My freshman year, I was put into a complex Adobe Visual Design class, and I was excited to be able to pursue a craft I wished to enhance my abilities at, all while in school with a professional teacher to guide me through. I dropped it for a class meant for juniors that I don't remember much of now. It's a genuine shame that the visual design class wasn't a prime concern.

Life is full of ups and downs. When those ups come you should savor the moment. When the downs come along as humans we have to find a way to get through it. I get through the downs in many ways but one of my favorite things to do is play my sax. I play the alto saxophone in the band at my school. I might not be a expert player but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy playing it. Even when I mess up and then I learn from my mistakes and improve on my skills. My day could be going awful but once band class hits my mood changes. I get into a mindset that is that of a person that is here right now and wants to get better at something they love. Playing my sax might not be the career for me but that doesn't stop from working on improving my skills. I feel like playing my instrument and learning about music makes me appreciate music on a whole new level. I am a strong believer that whatever your passion is you should go for it even when people tell you you shouldn't.
Emma Johnson (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
Hobbies have come and gone throughout the many stages in my life, but my passion for reading has remained constant. I am known to often be found engrossed in a book, blind to the rest of the world, much like Ms. Vanderkam said: “There’s moments when time has almost no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing.” Times like these are both enjoyable and motivating, which makes following your passion productive. Every book has a purpose, whether is social, religious, political or simply for entertainment. I love to read because I love being able to take in the author’s ideas, appreciate the craft, and form my own opinions and thoughts based on those of another. I use my passion to take in new perspectives and ideas in the books I read, helping me to be more informed, knowledgeable, and empathetic, and I feel I am a better person for it. If you encourage yourself to do what you love, you’ll be happy to work to give it significance or make an impact.

When it comes to passion and things that put us in our happy place, there are very few when it comes to me. I feel that everyone has one thing that they are passionate about. Even if they don't know what it is yet. When i think to myself about my personal passions, there is one that really clicks. That is not just listening to music, but almost wanting to make music. I have maybe experimented a couple times with making music. I was never really that successful. But the stuff id did, liked my self The passion part doesn't come with failing. It comes with the actual process. The way that i think is that i can listen to peoples music that they made themselves. The music that is listen to, (rap) just makes me want to make music. So when i was doing the experimenting, i knew it wasn't gonna be this huge blow up song, but i enjoyed doing it. And i though to myself, i could be the blow up artist. I think about myself not as someone who is going to grow up and do all the basic things in life. In a way i feel like i could be something when i get older. I have some sort of purpose in the world. With all this music, i feel like i could be part of something bigger. It's not that i feel i am going to be famous, but i feel as if i can be known for something.
Sam Martin (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
My greatest passion in life is football. I love everything’s about it. Whether is just watching football, or actually going out there on Friday night and playing for my high school, I love every aspect of this game. But unlike Andrew Rae I can’t make a career out of this passion. Sure I could work really really hard to play college football and then maybe get lucky enough to even have a sniff of being in the NFL, but that’s very unlikely. Though I love football, I can’t turn it into a career, and this is true for man you people’s passions as well. Some people have a passion for writing or a passion for art or a passion for movies but most people can’t become a professional artist or a movie director. Passions are great and some people will take their passions and turn them into very successful careers, but people like me aren’t able to follow these passions, so we are forced into settling for jobs we don’t necessarily like. At the end of the day passions for most people are just dreams, and chasing dreams doesn’t work out for most people.

I remember the first time I played the piano like it was yesterday. I was seven years old and I wasn’t taking piano lessons because I wanted to, instead like Ms. Vanderkam mentioned, my parents were forcing me. I didn’t love it, or even really like it, until I was nine. My piano teacher taught me Fur Elise and told me to play it as fast as I could. I did, and I loved it. Trying to think, read the music, and move my hands in sync as fast as possible made me feel free and motivated me to get better. It felt special, it was something I could do just for me. From that moment on, I’ve been passionate about playing the piano. My family has been playing the piano for generations, and playing out of the same books my family played at my age helps me to feel connected to my family. It also gives me a challenge- to be able to play everything my mother can. During the summer before freshman year, I would devote at least an hour each day to perfecting a new song. Ever since high school started, it has been harder for me to play. By the time I get home from practice and finish my homework, I am exhausted and just want to sleep. This year, I realized I was barely playing anymore and I began to set goals, challenging myself to play for just fifteen minutes a day or sometimes to play only one song. Taking small steps has definitely helped me, and I’m back to playing the piano every day. No matter what obstacles I have to overcome, the piano is a passion I plan to pursue lifelong.

After playing multiple sports throughout my years, volleyball has definitely become the one that I call my passion. I have been playing volleyball competitively and through school for 3 years now, and it has become a big part of my life. Soccer had always been something I had just done because I did not know anything else. But, like Mr. Rea said, “Even if it hadn’t become my career and completely changed my life, the late nights spent tinkering after work would’ve been worth it.” Obviously soccer is not my career, but playing volleyball has given me a relief, and shown me that I am more than just a soccer player. I also love playing volleyball in my free time. Whenever I get the chance I always try to fit a private lesson in or just pass with my friends. Volleyball makes me happy and filled with joy. Lauren Vanderkam said “Life just feels better when you have things in your hours that you want to do,” and “There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” These apply to anyone who has a passion, but I can say her study is proven right by me. Ever since playing volleyball, I have become the happy person I used to be. My mom always tells me, “You look so much happier on the court than you do on the field.” Volleyball brings out a side in me that I never knew I had. Volleyball is the reason I am where I am today, as an athlete and a person.
Brennan McCauley (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Passions are what make up who I am. The important passions I have in my life have never left my life and have always been a huge part of me. My biggest life passion has always been my love for sports, specifically hockey. Whether it's playing hockey or watching hockey it always puts me in an amazing mood. Hockey has a daily affect on my life, whether it's watching games every night or shooting on my net when I get home from school I do something hockey related every day. I think about hockey every single second I can and I absolutely love it. I really hope hockey has a lot to do with my future. I want to have a job that is hockey related where I get paid to do what I love most and being able to have a job where I thoroughly enjoy sounds amazing. Unfortunately, my school schedule has an extreme strain on my passion for hockey. Some nights I have so much homework where I don't have time to shoot on my net or watch any games which is extremely frustrating to me. Instead of getting to spend at least a little bit of time doing the stuff I love I'm forced to spend my entire night thinking about school. This article has motivated me to try to find time during the day to do what I love and makes me want to do it even more. Every single night hockey puts me in such a great mood, whenever I'm in a bad mood I'll go outside and shoot on my net or watch a game and it makes me feel so much better immediately. Hockey is what makes me who I am.
Justin Pfeifer (Hoggard Highschool, Wilmington, NC)
Since I was little, I’ve always had a few common interests. Soccer, art, and… well that's about it. I’ve found them however, to sometimes be more of a detriment than not. Though I certainly enjoy them, I, above all else, prioritize school work. From my experience, the limited time these passions cause me just makes me more rushed and stressed. That said, I do relate to Andrew Rea greatly. I think soccer and art have given me and outlet to express myself and my emotions. For him, these positive results came from his love for cooking and caused him to become happier and less stressed. For me, I understand the want to do something and the creative expression it allows, but I don’t always find these activities making me less stressed. Albeit, the article expresses this idea of not having time as us not making it a “priority”, I don't necessarily fall into that category. I make time and still do the things I enjoy, it’s just that sometimes, this period of happiness leads to more stress down the road. They act rather as a sort-of distraction, rather than a positive “healer” of problems. Yes, I want to draw and play soccer, but it requires an intricate balance of time and energy to maintain good grades on top of that. Still, I wouldn’t give up my hobbies for anything. I enjoy every second whilst I partake in them and get a lot of benefits from them, though also a few not-so-beneficial things. They help take my my off things, express myself, and just simply do something I enjoy.
Logan Pealer (Hoggard, Wilmington NC)
Passion is such a strong word, it can mean so many different things to different people. Throughout my life I've done many different sports or activities but wouldn't have the drive to peruse them past high school or later in life. The same thing could be said about jobs at this point in life; You may be working a job that you don't hate, your just not passionate about it. I loved to play soccer, but knew I wasn't passionate about it when I gave it up for other things. One thing I am "passionate" about is architecture and engineering. I've always been fascinated by buildings that are out of the ordinary and how they were designed etc. In the future I would much rather go into a field that I am passionate about than being stuck 40+ hours a week doing something that I dread.
Audrey Edwrads (Hoggard High school, Wilmington, NC)
My passion is art, the very thought of it brings a smile to my lips. I love creating something that people come together to admire at. The look in my friends eyes when I show them a drawing makes my day. Often in class I’m found doodling away. I can make whatever I desire, and that’s the beauty of it. I can imagine and fabricate anything no matter where I am. When I’m given a blank sheet of dull parchment I grin, knowing right away that this paper will turn into something that will grab someone's attention. While I’m drawing nothing else matters, the world could’ve been torn away and I couldn’t of cared less. When I mix and match colors, blend shades, and sketch away into my own little world I finally feel safe. The pressure from school, the standards I’m held at by my parents, and all the expectations from high school is whisked away as all my anger, sadness, and bliss move into my pencil, creating what I feel deep inside. It’s a world only I can go to, but also a world that I can share with others with a flick of my pencil. I want to impact people’s lives with my art, show them something they never even thought of. I want my creations to make an impact, make a mark. And when I’m drawing I feel as if that dream can become a reality. I’m always more happy being able to do what I love. I can’t wait to see what's in store for my life, but who knows, maybe my life is already being fulfilled because I’m fulfilling my passions with each and every passing day.
Madison Figueroa (Hoggard Highschool, Wilmington Nc)
I can totally agree with this article that finding your passion can ultimately lead you to happiness and help you find a sense of purpose in your life. Me personally I frequently move around due to my father being in the military. I never had the opportunity to find what made me happy. It eventually lead me to a state of depression and loneliness, but since I've moved here I've found my love for theater and it made me feel thankful and appreciative that I now have a passion that I can possibly pursue in the future. Theater makes me so happy because I can build new relationships with people who have similar interest with me. Every show that iv'e been in is always a family bonding ship which is the best part about theater. Even though when I move again I will have to make new friends it won't stop me from continuing what I truly love to do. Even though you may not pursue what you love in the future it still inspires you to try new things and make new friends which truly is the best thing.
Henry Wojciechowski (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Throughout my life, I have always found myself drawn towards a sense of freedom. As a child, I would go off on my own adventures. Within the confines of my yard that is. I have had so many hobbies over the years, with some generic like soccer, and unique passions such as fencing. But the ones I always enjoyed the most were those that elicit that sense of freedom. Currently, those include primarily skateboarding and fishing. Although those are two very different activities, one being a game of patience and the other deals with immediate gratitude, they each have a feel of escaping the normal. There is no such feeling like being out in the middle of the ocean with no sight of humanity around. There is a rhythm to attempting the same trick over and over again, or casting and reeling over and over again. It’s almost like an alternate style of meditation that can still exert some sort of personal gain. I don’t know what sort of hobbies I will be doing later in life, I do know however that they will involve that pure sense of freedom.
Will Golder (Wilmington, NC)
My two passions are fencing and flying. I started fencing when I was nine because of my love of Star Wars. Within a month, I decided that this is the sport that I wanted to persue (I had been doing basketball and soccer before this). Since then I have been fencing for over six years and have competed across the country in tournaments like the National Championship and the Junior Olympics. Whenever I fence my stress melts away because I am focused on nothing but what I am doing at the moment.
Lilly Eubanks (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
There isn’t a time in my day when I don’t find myself stressing over all the things I have to do. Going through my daily routine makes even most adults feel nauseous. All of my extracurriculars on top of school and homework is quite a lot. Even though my schedule is often full to the brim, I always find a little time to enjoy my one true passion. Writing has always been a secret love of mine. The words just seem to pour out everytime I put a pen to paper. At the top of my closet are at least twenty notebooks hidden away. All full of stories, poems, creative free writes, and things of the like. Some finished and some not. Most have never been seen by anyone's eyes but my own. I love when Laura Vanderkamp says, “There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels,” this is exactly how I feel everytime I pick up a notebook. Everything else just seems to fall away. Nothing has ever really stood in the way of my passions. Mostly just not having the time to pursue it. I would take the advice of cutting out the things I don’t truly love. I feel like this is just good advice in general. Trying new things is always something I enjoy. Everytime I do something I love the most it always makes me feel more fulfilled. Everytime I get to sit down and write, even if it’s just for five minutes, my mood instantly increases.
Bailey Barefoot (Hoggard High, Wilmington, NC)
One of my many passions is helping others. When the author writes "time has no meaning" I understood that in a way others don't. This past year when hurricane Florence hit my home, I could step up and help my community rebuild. It devastated many and left dozens without homes. My family had no major damage which was a blessing but many of my friends and elderly neighbors did. It consumed my time for days helping them clean up what was left of their homes. Time flew by each day and through the rubble we had lots of laughs and good times. It didn't matter to me that we were cleaning for days on end. It only mattered that we were safe and together.
Will Golder (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
The two main passions in my life are fencing and flying. I have been fencing since I was nine years old, and I have fallen in love with it. I first tried fencing because of my love for Star Wars. Within a month, I had decided that this was the sport that I was going to persue. Since then, I have traveled around the country to tournaments like the National Championship and the Junior Olympics. When I am fencing, all of my stresses go away because I am completely focused on only what is right in front of me.
Zoe Lee (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
I began volleyball in fifth grade, but I didn't realize that it was my passion until freshman year. Since my sister took an interest to volleyball, my parents figured that I needed an extracurricular activity as well. I had tried different sports and hobbies, yet none of them seemed to spark a true passion. “When you did activities as a kid, they were often built in -there was an adult forcing you to go," Vanderkam stated. During my first year, I would complain to my mom that I hated volleyball, I would never be good at it, and the kneepads were horribly uncomfortable. Nevertheless, every Sunday consisted of fights in the car ride on the way to practice. Vanderkam continued, saying that “many people find it easier to let go of promises they make to themselves” as adults. If it had been up to me, I would've quit without a second thought, but my parents urged me to keep going. As I began to improve, I found my place on teams with girls that later became my close friends. I chose to play a position that doesn't get much glory but requires the most strategical thinking. I was the setter, which is like the quarterback: we're supposed to see the court and each player, then give the ball to various hitters so they can score. I loved seeing the pride and joy in my teammates' eyes when they won a point, and knowing that I contributed to that gave me a sense of importance. I owe my family for giving me this passion, my team, and everything that I've learned from the experience.

The feeling of gliding down a clean, glassy wave is like nothing else that I have ever experienced. From the spray of the sea showering you as you ride, to the surge of the energetic ocean under your feet, surfing is an activity that never gets old. Ever since I was twelve years old, I have been surfing all different types of breaks along beaches around the globe. The ocean is my escape from all of the drama, schoolwork, and stress that intrudes into my day to day life. Whether I am getting up at 5:30 a.m. for a dawn patrol surf session, or riding my final wave of the night as the sun is setting, casting colors across the sky, I love every second of it. In the article, Laura Vanderkam says "There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing." I am working to start a surf club at my high school because I want to share that feeling with other teens that have something that they want to escape from, even just for a short amount of time. A passion is a good thing to have, but it is better when you can use it to improve the lives of others.
Sophia Southerland (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Since I was three years old, I have been playing soccer. It’s taken up all my free time my whole life and it still does. I do enjoy playing soccer, but I would not necessarily consider it my passion. I love art in every form, whether it’s music, paintings, poetry, etc. However, I don’t have any time to pursue any of that. I use art as a way of relieving stress and it makes me feel like a better person. Art is a good way of expressing feelings and showing purpose to everything around you. I very rarely have time to pursue art with my vigorous soccer schedule, but when I do, it’s one of the best feelings. When Ms. Vanderkam said, “If you don’t have a passion, even trying new things can give you a renewed sense of feeling and accomplishment.” I totally agree with this statement because when life is rough and you need to escape, trying new things can distract your mind. When I’m struggling in life, I look at art and explore different types of it, and everything around me disappears. Nothing else matters when you see real purpose and meaning to everything around you.
McClaine McIntyre (Wilmington NC, Hoggard High School)
Something I am very passionate about is trying to help people. Ever since I was a little girl, I have gone to charity organizations with my mom to help out those who need it. I am a part of NCL. NCL is an organization of girls and their mothers that go to several places and help out those in need. One time that we went to a church and helped out those who were affected by a hurricane. It made my heart hurt to see those people going through that, but after I went and helped out I had a sense of confidence in myself. I am also a sponsor for a twelve year old boy that lives in Ethiopia. His name is Teklemuz. His dream is to become a doctor. I sponsor him through an organization called Save The Children. I send him some money every month that helps him achieve his dreams in Ethiopia. Sometimes I write a letter to him asking about his friends and his favorite things to do. It takes a few months to get a response though. That is because someone has to translate my writing and another person will translate his writing for when he sends it back to me. Every time a send or receive a letter, I get so excited. It has always been my dream of mine to help people and doing NCL and Save The Children makes me feel like I am making my impact on the world. It makes my heart melt to see the people’s faces and their genuine smiles when I do these things. I will continue for the rest of my life trying to help people the best way I can.
Nick Gallo (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
Surfing is one of my favorite activities, whether it's summer or winter, but mostly summer. It isn't apart of my daily life but I would like it to be. I don't go out much though whether it be a lack of time or the conditions aren't meeting my expectations. Whenever I surf it is always an enjoyable time and I encourage friends to come out to when they get the chance. Surfing is truly fun for me because of the little time I do surf. It can't be a daily activity and the conditions are only so good so many time and rarely am I being prevented to surf when the conditions are good, outside of school Laura says, "There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing," and this reflects the time I have surfing when I go out. Once I had a meeting where I needed to be on time and I decided to go surfing beforehand. Pushing my time to the limit, my mother called me out of the water when it got really close. Making memories on the water is a big part of surfing because it will almost always be a new experience. I have a lot of firsts while surfing and those are times I made the best of my time.

Passion, such a strong word that each person associates with something different. My definition of passion is something that lets me escape from what is real and into a world that I have come to love. For me, that world is running. All throughout elementary and middle school, I would spend some afternoons cheering my mom on from the sidelines of her races. During the summer of freshman year, my mom and I decided it would be good for me to do cross country with my school. Running on a forced schedule, 6 days a week quickly made me lose that interest. It was not until I started running with a friend after school every Tuesday and Thursday that I looked forward to lacing up my running shoes and hitting the trail. We would only run on days we felt up to it. After a few weeks, I found myself asking my mom if she wanted to race with me to a nearby park after school. I still do not run every single day but, that should not define if running is a passion of mine or not. Passions don't have timestamps. If I thought of them like that, I would have very few. Passions are something you do not force yourself to do. Running lets me take in my surroundings and enjoy what I've been given. Without it, stress would be drowning me 24/7. I could never agree more with the article when it says, “There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.”

As a high school student, I spend the majority of my time completing homework and studying for tests. However, I do believe that every person should set aside a few hours of their day to participate in something that truly brings them joy. I have a passion for music, and an activity that brings me happiness is playing the violin. Every day, upon return from school, I turn on my speaker and listen to whatever genre of music I happen to be in the mood for. Listening to and creating music brings me emotions that I cannot receive in my schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Taking accelerated courses in high school, I often get lost in the stress of essays and tests, and I frequently decide to take a break from studying and working, and go downstairs to play a calming piece on my violin. Music takes me away from the stress, and is a great way for me to relieve myself of the course load from school. As the article states, “Researchers found that participants who engaged in hobbies were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities, as well as for some time after.” I agree with this article, and do believe that participating in something you are passionate for will increase your happiness and lower the stress of daily life.

There's nothing better in the world than distancing yourself from all the negativity dissociating from the purpose of life, exploring your passion. My passions are very straightforward because they all revolve around the spirit of music. Singing brings me to my safe place, where all my negativity is washed out because all I’m focusing on is embodying the flow of the music and unleashing the artist within me. I find myself drowning in work every night, wishing I had the time to sit down and pour my heart out singing to my favorite Ariana grande songs, reminding of my childhood, when I used to sing around the house and my dad used to record each second of it. I feel lost inside if my day doesn't include the presence of music. During any spare time I take the chance then, in listing to music. It's the only thing that keeps the feeling of tranquility within me. It distracts me from all my insecurities and problems haunting me. I agree with the article statement: “The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels.” When I pursue my passion the little bit I can, I find myself getting lost in the music and it taking over my body and I manage to completely detach myself from the time passing by. When I find myself doing what I love the most, I feel that I’m fulfilling my purpose in life. Spending my time singing or listening to music, makes the essence of life better, knowing I'm achieving my purpose in this world.

Throughout my life, passions of mine have come and go, but others seem to have stuck around. Woodworking is just an example of one that still holds their ground in my life. When I was about 5 years old, my father got me this little play set that came with fake pieces of wood, and tools like a hammer, fake nails, screwdrivers, and many other cool little gadgets. My mom still tells me to this day that whenever I had a little free time, you would always find me at that play set playing with some of the tools.I would always ask my dad if he ever needed help working on something and he would always agree. Ever since then I just loved making objects out of wood. One day my friend texts me about this program that he does called KMI. He says you go there after school one day a week and you just create things. I told my mom about it and she says that she will look into it. Within the next two weeks, I was getting picked up and my mom would drop me off at their building every Tuesday. I feel like my situation relates to this article because whenever I walk into the building, I feel as if I could throw my problems right out of the window for those two hours that I am there. It's just that staff and other kids there give me a sense of support and would never try and put me down, and I am grateful for that. This was about a year ago and I am still in that program today. I am looking forward in continuing this passion throughout my life because it had a big impact on my life.

For most of my life I haven’t had one thing that I’m extremely passionate about. I'd taken up many hobbies, but nothing ever really clicked. Until recently not one stood out. I love to cook, I never really thought much about it until a few months ago when I developed an interest. My parents have always had me help in the kitchen during dinner; chopping or peeling vegetables. Eventually I helped more and more until my job became making a side dish. Over time, I made a larger part of dinner until eventually I was making entire meals. I love the feeling of eating an amazing meal with your family and knowing that you made it all by yourself.

When I was 11 years old I came across an account in Instagram that was dedicated to nail art; I was so enthralled by all of the colourful, intriquate designs that people fit onto their nails and I knew I wanted to try it out myself. I was not very good at first but I loved trying, so I kept at it until my nail designs started to turn out pretty good. Over the past 4 years I have taught myself and perfected tons of different techniques like gradients, freehand painting, stamping and so many more, so now I can paint anything that I want on my nails. My favorite part about nail art is that the creative possibilities are endless; I love coming up with a great design idea and choosing the perfect color and glitter combinations for that design. I carve time out of my busy weekly schedule so that every Sunday afternoon I have a few hours to spend doing my nails, which is time that I spend having fun, being creative, and truely enjoying myself. The article states that “researchers found that participants who engaged in hobbies were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities,” and I find this to be very true. While I am doing my nails I focus so much on painting my designs exactly how I want them that it makes me forget about everything else that is going on in my life, and that is very relaxing for me. Whether it turns into a career for me or not, I know that I will never stop doing nail art because it is one of my most beloved passions.

I've had a passion for video games since the third grade. I remember discovering Minecraft on my iPad. I had no idea how to play it at the time, but I still loved it to death. It gave me a way to experience stuff once thought impossible to me, such as fighting zombies with a sword made out of diamonds. A year after discovering Minecraft, I convinced my parents to let me play on it on the computer. This was a HUGE deal for me, because that's what all my friends played on. I was already having fun with Minecraft on my iPad, but my passion really took off when I was able to game with my friends. Now that I've put on a few years, I don't dive into the blocky world as much. I do however, still have that passion I had since I was 8. I still can't believe how people can make their games as intricate as they do. When I dive back into video games, they give me an out when I feel overwhelmed. Always need to finish my homework though!

When I think about what I love to do during my free time, one thing pops into my head: chess! Chess may appear to be a simple board game, much like Monopoly or Candy Land, but it’s really so much more. The strategy, calculation, and dedication all required to become a master of the game is something so enticing that some individuals dedicate their entire lives to becoming champions, known as grandmasters. I really wouldn’t mind pursuing a career as a grandmaster, because like other passions, “[t]here’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. The more time you can spend in that zone, the better life feels” (Schumer 1). I’d say chess is more than just a game to me - it’s one of the only things I can say with the utmost candor that I truly enjoy doing. What’s more, this passion keeps me happy and even healthy, as, “[a] 2015 study published in The Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that pursuing your passion both lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness over all” (Schumer 1). For me, there really isn’t a reason to not play chess. In my victories, chess fills me with glee and self-contentment; in my lows, it teaches me important lessons, not only about the board, but also about dealing with loss. In short, I’m a winner not because I win or lose, but because I do something I enjoy while learning new things with every match I play.

Throughout my whole life, I have always been very passionate about music. Ever since I was little and watched my grandfather play the piano, I knew I wanted to learn how to play. When I was six, my mom signed me up for piano lessons and I immediately fell in love. As time went by, my passion for piano faded and I ended up quitting my lessons last December. As much as I wanted to continue the lessons, I didn’t have any time to practice and it ended up becoming a chore for me. It’s sad how I don’t have time for one of my passions, all because of the amount of school work I have to complete each night and the pressure that comes with it. Although my passion for piano is not as strong, my passion for music is very exuberant. In fact, I listen to music almost always. I listen to it when I am doing the dishes after dinner, when I am going to bed and when I am doing homework. When I listen to music while doing work, it helps me to stay motivated and keeps me sane. Listening to music relieves me of my stress and pressure to always be perfect and I am always happier when listening to it. Just like it says in the article: “A 2015 study published in The Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that pursuing your passion both lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness over all.”, my passion for music makes my life much better. When I do what I love, I am distracted from all of my problems and escape to a different world.

Throughout my 15 years on this planet, there is only one hobby that I started when I was young and still do to this day. That hobby is reading, and it means more to me than anything else. Nothing can compare to starting a new book or even better a new series, and seeing a world unfurl before your eyes. I can lose myself reading for hours, except these days I don’t have that extra time. The more homework I get the less time I have to curl up and read, but I still try to read every day. Like the article said: “You may be able to find some wiggle room, especially in those couple of hours before bed most of us spend hitting “next” on the TV queue.” That is exactly what I do. Instead of watching TV at night I read, and this article reminded me why. In the haze of homework and studying, reading helps me focus, feel happier, and when I’m done I have more motivation to finish everything else.

In my lifetime I have had different passions come and go, for example, baking, singing, yoga and playing piano. When I take a step back and look at what truly makes me happy and enjoy myself it is dance and fashion designing. I started dancing when I was about three years old like any little girl would but there was something about it that really spoke to me. Now that I have had to quit because of my eating disorder I am able to come to a conclusion. People could come to shows enjoy themselves watching me dance as much as I was enjoying performing for them. Even though dancing was a small piece of my eating disorder I do believe that it helped alleviate stress just like it says in the article that, “Researchers found that participants who engages in hobbies were 39 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad.” Fashion designing has always had a place in my heart. It gave me the opportunity to express myself in so many ways. Each article of clothing shows a different piece of a person's personality. Sometimes I struggle with expressing myself but every time I get to pick out a piece of clothing and pair it with another or sketching out what I think should be the next fashion trend it brings me the feeling that no one will judge me. Within time more hobbies will come and go just like how a person likes a song until it goes out of trend but I will just have to wait for what the future holds for me.

I agree with the passage because when your passionate about something, nothing else matters. My passion is drawing, I love to doodle on any piece of paper given to me and I love to make up situations to go with the doodles. When I draw, its like I am in my own world. All I think about is the character and their world. I feel at peace when I leave my mind set and enter the realm of my drawings. In the article, they stated that you go into a zone that makes you happy and excited. I do exactly that, when I'm inside my characters mind. I get passionate to make more and more, I get so into the personal I need to make every detail matter. Does he play sports or whats his special power? Does she dance for her personal happiness or to satisfy her parents? Whats their backstory and how does it effect them now? These are common things I ponder on to make this person came to life. I can use this outside of my enjoyment. I can share my work with others and the sparkle in their eyes as I drew one of their interest, makes my more passion about what I do. I hope that I can take my passion and make myself and others satisfied. I want to show my passions and at the same time also want to excite others about theirs.

After searching through many different sports at the outset, between Ice Skating, Gymnastics, and Basketball, I was still a tenacious seven year old on a journey to pinpoint something that I wanted to do as an after school activity. At the time my sister was playing soccer so I decided to give it a try. Just like the other kids, I would chase the ball just merely to place a foot on it. Little did I know that this would develop into a passion over time. I began in a recreational league going to the fields once a week. Then I joined my first travel team at the age of ten and I am still currently on that team today. Some of the girls I have played with over the years have lost their passion for the game and some are still with me today carrying the same ardor. Now I have practice two times a week, and during the spring I play school soccer. Some days I have soccer for four hours, and during that time where I am forced to juggle school, soccer, my social life, and time with my family the idea that soccer is a passion can become lost. You get so busy you wonder how you can handle it all, but “When you say you don’t have time, what you’re really saying is, it’s not a priority.” Ms Vandercam completely sums up the idea that if something truly means so much to you, time won’t be an imperative factor for you to be able to pursue your passion. So as time goes on and as I continue believe this is my passion, I won’t ever credit time for taking away something from me if it means so much.
Hannah Jackson (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
One of my passions is drawing. Whenever I start, I lose myself. Parts of my brain begin to turn off and I stop worrying about what happened that day. The only thing I leave on is my imagination. All that matters is the pencil in my hand and what it's doing on the paper. I usually draw people because I love creating new characters. Once the body is drawn, it's time to design an outfit. However, I can't just give them generic clothing. There has to be a reason behind the clothing. Why do they wear this jacket? Why does she wear two different colored socks? The reasons turn into small details. He has this scar here because of some traumatic event. This person is this tall because they're only half human. By the time I'm done, I've created a mini backstory for the person. This leads into one of my other passions: writing. If I like a character enough, I usually start a story about them. If not, I set the drawing aside and the character fades until it's just a picture. I feel so much happier when I'm doing what I love, like the article says. I'll find myself smiling for no exact reason. I lean more towards fiction because I love creating my own worlds. There's something special about making your own rules for a place, if there are any. I'd love to make this into a career, but I'll just have to wait and see what the future holds!

Everyone loves to do the things they are passionate about, even though it's often not how we spend most of our time. I spend most of my time at school and doing homework, and most teens are on the same page. We wake up, go to school, get home, and do homework. It’s the same drag every day. My soccer practices are wedged into that schedule as well, but I tend to lose the passion for my favorite sport when it takes up my entire schedule. During these times, I feel heavier, weighed down by stress and monotony. I can forget about my passions and get lost in a world of grey. A world where my life is simply following orders to things I don’t want to do. This is why it is important to make room for the things we are passionate about. When I do the things I am passionate about, I feel more lively, happier. Many of us need to be reminded of how important our passions are.
Alex Lee (Hoggard High, Wilmington NC)
My passion is tennis. It has been my passion since I was 6 years old but I didn't know it until a few years later. I have played for as long as I can remember but I didn't fully understand my love for the sport until around 10 years old. That is when I started playing competitive and really enjoying it. One of the things I enjoy most about playing is that it takes my mind off everything else. If I'm stressed out about school, I can count on tennis to distract me for a little while. I forget about all the worries that I was previously having troubles with and just get lost in the sport I love. Earlier this year I had a shoulder injury involving my growth plates so I could't play 2 months. Even though that is not a long time, it felt like a year. I had never come home from school and had nothing to do every day of the week except school work. There was no balance between all the stress from school and the calmness of playing tennis. That is why I think having a passion is so important because you need that healthy balance and it has such a positive effect. Everyone will have a different passion, but mine is tennis and I can play as long as I chose to. It really does have a great influence on my stress and keeps me going.
Emily Curtis (Hoggard High, Wilmington Nc)
One of my passions is reading. I love it so much and try to do it every day. When I learned to read, it opened a whole new world for me. I could read about whatever is wanted, my favorite genre being fantasy. I always try to read every day, because it makes me feel so good. Every night before I go to sleep, I read. I can forget about what happened at school, or what homework I need to do, I can just read. Like the passage says, reading does take away my stress. I can focus on that and nothing else, going to various make-believe worlds that are so inviting. It is so fun to see your siblings learn to love what you love. I am the oldest of my family, and I love watching my brothers and sister read the books I love and read as a kid. I can talk about it with them, and I love it so much. When ever I finish a book, I am immediately wanting another book to read. I especially love going to the library and borrowing six new books to read. Even if I can't read all of the at once, I am so excited I could finish all of them in a week. Even if this will never become a profession, I can still read books, knowing I will never have to stop. You can never get to old to read, and I know I will never stop loving it.

After dabbling in a myriad of activities (cooking, swimming, writing, etc.) over the course of my admittedly relatively short life, I have found my passion to be art. Before I discovered this, I had always felt something was missing from my life. In retrospect, I was not truly living then, only functioning. While enjoying art, I genuinely felt happier and less stressed, just as the article stated. Ironically, I am not a gifted artist, nor do I to attempt to become one. I prefer to observe and analyze art, giving life and meaning to the inanimate, two-dimensional brushstrokes on a canvas. I find myself particularly spellbound by impressionism, especially the work of Claude Monet. Staring at one of his pieces, I am enthralled by how he captures the soul of a place in precise brushstrokes and blended paint. I have been fortunate to visit the Louvre, the American National Gallery, and Michelangelo's David, among other things. Every time I visit one of these places, I am even more deeply captivated by these deep and meaningful expressions of someone’s soul. However, I fear that I will never pursue my passion professionally. I lack the talent to become an artist, and I have been shepherded towards safer career choices my entire life. As a critic, my lack of artistic ability would rob me of any credibility, barring my entry to the field. However, I take solace in the knowledge that I do not need to be an artist or a critic to appreciate my favorite works, and that is all I need.

Whether in the pool, a spring, the ocean, or any other body of water you can fit in, just enjoying the silence and endlessly swimming without the need to go to the surface for air makes you lose track of time and fully engulfs you into the new, underwater world

In the sixth grade I decided to try running with a little school running program. This would end up being the first time someone really saw something in me. The coach of our group sparked my motivation, I really got into the sport and ended up being the fastest one in our group for all three years of middle school on that team. In seventh grade I found another group that brought kids to a lot more competitive races and I knew I just had to try this out. I joined the team about halfway through their track season, but within three track meets I ended up qualifying for the Regionals Championship 800 meter race and then qualified for the States Championships as well. After middle school, I tried out the cross country team for my high school. This was the first time I was really able to experience the team mentality of the sport. Before it felt more like every man for themselves, when I joined this team I learned all about the scoring of cross country and how you have to depend on one another in the team to accomplish each other’s goals individually and as a team. I ended up making varsity my freshman year in track and cross country and made it to Regionals and States in both seasons. Right now I’m a sophomore, I just finished another successful season with this team and will be moving on to track in a month. I’m having the time of my life running on this team and I look forward to running here the next two years and hope to even run in college!

My passion is soccer. I have been playing soccer since I was 3. I love the sport so much. I agree with this article. Whenever I played soccer I always found it as an escape. I would go out on the field and all I focused on was getting the ball. It was a way for me to forget about my anxiety, forget about the things hanging over my head. Pretty much a way for me to forget the bad things going on in my life. I think that everyone needs to find a hobby, because it is so important with all the stress you have that you can forget about it and release some of it doing something you love. This article really made me step back and take a look at the impact soccer has had on my life. One day in 8th grade I got a knee injury that caused me to have 3 surgeries and be out of soccer for 2 years. My knee injury has pretty much healed and right now I am working with someone to get my knee stronger so that I can play again. For those 2 years I felt like my life was ending. Soccer had always been the thing I looked forward to each day. Without a hobby it felt like each day was the same old boring pattern. It felt like I was living but not really. I was just stuck in the same boring routine, wake up to school, come home go to bed. I found that without my hobby I was so much more anxious all the time. I had built up anger and I didn’t know what to do with it so it would result in me snapping at people. I just didn’t have the escape to do what I loved anymore. Everyone needs a hobby.

My passion is soccer, I’ve been playing since I was 3 years old. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been playing with better teams and more competition. Some people quit sports because it get too competitive and they just don’t think it’s fun anymore, but to me it being so competitive makes it fun. A 2015 study published in The Annals of Behavioral Medicine said that having a passion and doing it, lowers stress and contributes to greater happiness. Researchers found that 34% of people that were engaged in an extracurricular activity were less stressed and 18% of them were happier. Soccer does have this affect on me because when I’m playing it, I just forget about all my worries and focus on it. Also everyone on my team has a big impact on how I feel, I’m so close with everyone and they’re basically my family. I’m probably with them more than my actual family. We all push each other to become better and were always there for each other. I want to play soccer in college at the D1 level and maybe eve go pro. I work so hard now because if this does happen it’ll be so worth it and all my hard work will have payed off.

My passion is drawing even though I don't have the time with school and extra caricular activities outside of school, but when I do I make it my passion. The one thing I manly enjoy is drawing something and then painting it on a canvas.

I am passionate for baking. Baking is one of my favorite things to do, although its really time consuming. I sometimes wish that I could do it on daily bases, but with school, I don't have time to actually focus on baking. decorating is my favorite part of the process. its where you express yourself to art. The smallest details can express much more than the main piece.

My passions all evolve around one central topic, our planet and its natural beauty. I will never understood those who take this for granted. Whether I am competing in my local surf contest, traveling, taking pictures and writing, or just living in the moment with my friends on the beach. Sitting at our spot, swinging in our hammocks, listening to good music and watching the sunset. My life evolves around the great outdoors. This truly is my passion, sharing my point of view on plastic and how it should be removed from your daily routine. I try to emphasize this everywhere I go, and that is why I am saying this through this forum. There are so many other things you can be using instead of plastic that are so much more efficient. It is a win, win. Try a reusable water bottle, that get this.. will actually keep your water cold all day! A bamboo silverware kit, no more floppy plastic fork that snaps mid meal. Say no to the straws, and try a paper, metal, bamboo or even glass one. Bring a glass container, and cup with you when getting take out. Also, this one seems like the most efficient. Bring cloth bags with you to the grocery store, or if you don't want to remember them, just ask for paper. Both are more sturdy and leave you with less bags having to be hauled into your trunk. This is my passion, and I hope it influences you to make it one of yours as well.

After viewing The New York Times article, "What Are Your Passions?" I thought for a minute what I love? and what is my passion? I love many things, but my passion is being with friends, I literally can be with friends all day everyday no matter the weather or hour. I always need to speak withe a friend so my day will be better, this passion is a need because i cant do anything witheout talking or being withe friends so i agree with the article and support the writer opinion because no matter what is your passion you need to go after it and never let go even if its hard or unpossibale for a moment.

A passion was always something I was looking for. I wanted something that was my "thing", something specific and associated with me. Throughout high school I was looking for what that was mine; politics, dance, Chinese; but none of them ever felt right. Then I watched the movie American Beauty. I was mesmerized by the cinematography, the acting, the directing, the dialogue, and the message. How could a movie have such a large impact on me? I started looking for others like it. Movies that when the credits roll, I need to stop, sit in silence, and think about. How the metaphors connect and analyze the character development and deterioration. I started getting addicted to finding directors and I finally figured out my passion, film. Now I have seen hundreds of art and indie movies and i work at a movie theatre!

Throughout the course of live I have obtained many different passions that have helped me grow into the person I am today. Although I have lots of little hobbies I like to do, there are only two main things that I love doing. Music; the core of what I am. Everyday of my life there is music involved whether that is in band playing the trumpet, at home as I’m playing the piano at 1 am on a Sunday morning, or on the bus ride to school as I am listening to some smooth jazz. I was introduced to the music at a very young age and started taking piano lessons when I was 7. The other passion I have is only something I discovered I had a liking for this year, which is stage managing for my schools theater. I have been apart of the theater since I was in 6th grade and have been doing it every year since except for my freshmen year of high school. During freshman year I got too busy with other activities that I wasn’t as excited about but I’m still glad that I did them because it let me know that these weren’t the things I want to focus on in life. This year, as I’m in my junior year of high school, I was asked to stage manage the musical and I’ve had a great time doing it since day one. I go to the theater everyday after school from 2:40 to 5:30 and take notes as to what’s happening onstage and off. It’s definitely hard sometimes to fit in everything, but in the end it’s worth it because I feel accomplished and happy and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.

My biggest passion is working on cars. I literally can do it all day everyday no matter the weather. I am always working on my car even if there is nothing wrong with it, just trying to make it a better car. I think it will put an impact on my future because i would love to go to school so i can be a mechanic. Whenever i am upset i find something to do with my car whether it has something to do with the engine or us washing it. I feel that if i was not with my friends working on our cars together, that i would be out doing stupid stuff. My car would definitely my life saver.

I love many things. My passion for sport is perhaps the oldest passion that I claim. After sport came history. After history came acting. After acting came chemistry. These passions are as common to me as getting up in the morning, and going to bed at night. Some of them I hold dear, and wish to follow in the future. I have considered acting, chemistry, and history as some sort of a career path (mostly because I know that I will not become a professional athlete) and all are as appealing to me as the one before it. Although I may not end up in a career that uses all of these hobbies, each one has shaped me into a better person. Sports and acting have given me a sense of community and teamwork, and chemistry and history have given me more knowledge about the world. They’ve all done so much to me, that despite my busy schedule, I make sure to keep all of them up every week. Fortunately enough for me, most of my week is taken up by the things that I love. I love every time I skate off a sheet of ice, I love every time I complete a chemistry problem, I love every time I step offstage. Doing what I love makes me feel more full and happier. All of my passions give me a greater sense of accomplishment and meaning.

Ever since I was little, I have loved to help everyone around me. Whether it be volunteering at a soup kitchen or taking care of sick animals, I love making sure others are happy and well. I always knew that I wanted to devote my life to the good of society, so I decided that becoming a veterinarian would be the perfect solution, as I absolutely adore animals. I am eager to spend my days caring for others by keeping beloved pets healthy. Spreading kindness and helping others not only benefits society, but fulfills me and makes me a better person. I have been pursuing my passion of helping animals by working at an animal clinic, and I’m so happy because of it.

I believe that my true passion is art, but I had always wanted to practice in woodworking and building with my dad. I also wanted to further my skills at music, which brought me a sense of peace as I let the piano turn notes into beautiful melodies. However, obstacles such as school and money got in the way, and my constant piles of homework prevented me from joining my dad in the backyard while my lessons costed my parents money every month. In the end, drawing stayed with me. I was still able to create on paper with fictional scenes or 2D designs that I could create one day in the future. Drawing took the place of music because instead of my finger running around the keyboard, my pencil was flying across the surface. There was no limit to drawing, but there was a limit of time within each song, and I was only able to play a few. Drawing allowed an escape from the real world, but it also allowed a connection between myself and others who always enjoyed the ability of using their imagination to create satisfying images to the public. I do wish to have more time in order to pursue other things as I have mentioned before. I hope my passions takes me to where I want to be in life, so my time doesn’t depend on when things end, but when I am able to start again.

My passions are video creating, and singing.
Yamil Munoz (Providence, Rhode Island)
My passion is dancing, which i've been doing since the age of 5. Although I'm still not sure if I want to turn dance into my future career, I still continue to go to classes weekly. I definitely use dance as a way to have fun and relieve stress as well. School and other activities always get in my head so when I'm dancing I forget about these things and just focus on me. It makes me feel happy, complete, and overall a better person because I'm doing something I love without feeling some type of pressure from someone. Although dancing makes me feel happy, this happiness isn't always the case. School, mostly, gets in the way of me pursuing my passion. Yes I go to dance classes weekly but I'm always being left with the burden of having to stay up late doing homework. Schools should assign less or no homework because I feel like students need time to explore what they like to do and what they want to do in their future lives. Schools should even offer programs with different types of activities so students can better themselves in their passions or future careers.
Ashley (Minneapolis, MN)
@Yamil Munoz follow your dreams, If dancing is something that you are passionate about, then you should go for it. And I completely agree with you! Schools should assign no homework due to people discovering themselves.

I have many passions, but my primary passion would be photography. Taking pictures and expressing my feelings through my photos is such a relieving feeling. Sometimes I don't feel motivated or passionate enough to work on my photography but I'm usually able to get out and find something I can take a picture of, like sports games or my schools spirit week. Schools takes up a lot of time but it is a means to an end, that end goal being college and finally, fulfilling career.
Yuni (Taiwan)
My greatest passion is drawing, and playing basketball. When I feel exhausted, doing both of the options make me feel comfortable and relaxing. By indulging myself into the scenario of creating fantasies with a pencil and a piece of paper; by throwing myself into a fierce game of basketball, I might have chances to forget a while about the upsets I encounter in life. This way, I could processed my emotions in a more cool-headed way. Sometimes, my life is occupied by things I barely have interests but are necessary to accomplish. However, in order to add some flavor into to regular routines, I still arranged some time for playing basketball. So I entered the basketball team in the department. In my opinion, “myself being lazy” might be the main villain that stops me from keeping in touch with those passions. Second villain will comes to the subjects that I have no interests in but have to work on. I like the way that Laura Vanderkam had mentioned ““There’s moments where time almost has no meaning because we’re so happy about what we’re doing. " That somehow pushes me a bit to think through my passions once again. I agreed. When encountered new trails or new ways of spending our own time, if we refused it walking into our lives every time it comes along, we will never knew whether we will like it or not. Cultivated a passion may be “love at first sight”; Nevertheless, it may also need time to form it into a more steady and complete shape in our heart.
Dylan Itkin (Providence, Rhode Island)
My passion is filmmaking and I want directing to be my career. Sometimes I feel like school should allow more time for people to explore their dreams and talents. As students complete high school, they have all been taught pretty much the same material, leaving limited space for creative exploration and individual freedom. Self expression is at the heart of what will make people positive, unique members of society. Yet schools give kids few chances to truly discover themselves. If you're not an athlete, you most likely will not feel your desired career path reflected in your school. And if you are a high school athlete, you most likely won't make it professional. It's hard not to feel discouraged under a barrage of school work, college anxiety, social uncertainty, and general adolescent chaos. High school stress often feels exaggerated by headlines as a special kind of hell but there is truth to the mania. High schools should channel more energy into helping kids focus on their careers. After all, we spend more of our lives at jobs than at school. Education should reflect that.

A large part of my life that I believe is a true passion of mine is music. I have in every way tried becoming as involved in the music programs offered from elementary school up to high school now. Some may see it as stressful, with the amount of sports, ap courses and other hobbies that I do. With chorus and band on top of it all, it would seem to others as overwhelming. The large thing with music is that it doesn't feel stressful. No matter if I have a busy day with a ton of homework, or a big meet for cross country later in the day. When I sit down to sing or play my flute, all the stress of the day seems to go away. Music has always been a large part of my life and I'm going to strive to keep it in my life for as long as possible. In college my goal is to still participate in marching band, as well as find an acapella group to join. Even if none of these work out I will stick to my normal listening to music while doing homework or having a mini concert in the shower. No matter what, I will always keep a part of music with me throughout the rest of my life. Music has been something that has shaped me as a person and gotten me through rough patches of my life. Music will forever be a passion of mine that I will keep with me, and I can honestly say I could never picture a life without music in it.

Write is my passion,my interest for write comes when I was in 10 years old. I started to write a poems and letters , but now I write a science fiction stories, just because I like the mysterious and discovers new things , and I will to like to write a book.

If anything prevented me from pursuing my passions it would be the lack of free time I have because of my priorities such as school. I have limited time to follow my passions that require time to accomplish or be good at. Some advice I would take would be using my time wise and trying to not be held up by things going on.
Julie Kee (Danvers, Massachusetts )
I have many passions, and they all vary. I run varsity cross country in the fall, track in winter, and tennis in spring. I participate in my school clubs- activism groups like Students United For Acceptance and Women of the World, as well as fun things like Mock Trial and Book Club. I have a job at the local library, too. All these things are my passions, and I love being a part of them. I like joining these things because they help me become a better person. Athletics keep me healthy and in shape, and are my biggest stress reliever. An important race or a hard practice helps to clear my head from the pressure of school and focus. Activism clubs like SUFA and WOW help me to be informed and aware politically and socially, as well as hear other's perspective on topics. Making my school setting more accepting in general also makes me feel like I can make a difference, which is inspiring. Sometimes, I think I over involve myself. Because I participate in time consuming activities, I don't always have the chance to make time for my friends or my family. It also prevents me from trying new things. I got interested in roller derby earlier this year but was talked out of it because it would ruin my legs for cross country. All of new things I want to try have to be filtered through my schedule, how it would affect me, and probably a coach. Overall, though, I'm appreciative I have the opportunity to participate in activities like these, and the sense of purpose they give me.

After viewing The New York Times article, "What Are Your Passions?" my number one passion is art, mainly drawing. I can't remember when I started to draw, but I enjoy it now. I also like to shade my artwork to make it look more real. I also took art lessons over the summer. Overall, my passion is drawing.

Cooking, my greatest passion in the world, and outdoors the most calming thing in the world. With all of the pressure that I have with school, work and at home. Cooking is my escape from all of the stress and the drama that comes with school. When I am in the kitchen cooking I can feel the weight of stress and responsibilities roll off my shoulders. At the end of the day my all time favorite thing to do is to go walking. I would have to say that being outside is something that I look forward to on a daily basis. I live on a hill and in front of a pond it is the most beautiful thing you will ever see. Walking outside and seeing the the pond and then the valleys and the mountain in the background it is breath taking. It is super calming to be able to be a part of nature. When I need to make important decisions, You will always find me outside. These two passions make me very happy. They are both my happy place and when I am there Nothing else can bring me down. These passions are what help me get through the day. They bring so much happiness into my life and give me so much Inspiration and motivation.

My passion is cosmetology. The idea of beautifying people is fun. I am a senior in high school and I go to beauty school. I look forward to practicing my profession everyday. To satisfy people and make them feel good about their appearance is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I believe everyone should have a passion that they do everyday in order to be happy with their self.
Ella Beth H. (Oxford Middle School)
After reading the New York Times article "What Are Your Passions?" I have many passions, but one that I would like to pursue is art. I absolutely love art and I could see myself as a book illustrator or a painter or someone else in the art field. In conclusion I could see my passion of art turning into a carrer.
Taylor Lawrence (Russellville, Arkansa)
Imagine being seventeen years old? Your greatest passion is children, for shopping for them, to taking them to the park, or getting ice cream. My entire life resolves around kids, and babysitting is my passion, I hope to own my own daycare one day. I have a gift from god for helping children. Children are my purpose of living and going thru life the reason I wake up with smile on my face.
Carolina C. (Oxford Middle School)
After reading the article, I think one thing that could prevent people from pursuing their passions is the fact that you might not be able to make a ton of money from it. For example, many people have a passion for one of the arts, but unfortunately, often times a job in the arts will not pay extremely high. I think, even if it's only a side job or hobby, doing what you love is important. In paragraph 5, Mr. Rea states "I was cooking again, I was filming again, I was happy again." Overall, I think that people may get caught up in the fact that they don't think they can make enough money, and forget that doing what they love is health and important.
Britney Kirk (Dardanelle High School)
What are my passions? Sports are my passion. In majority of my free time, I will spend it watching or playing some type of sport. I usually play softball, but sometimes I play tennis. I spend every weekend almost playing softball. I spend some time during the week playing or practicing tennis. When I am not doing softball or tennis, I will spend my time watching videos or competitions of other sports. I grew up being around sports, and they are just really interesting to me, this is why they are my passion.
Aaron Leventhal (Massachusetts)
Mock Trial, an after-school club, and the guitar, my favorite instrument, are my two greatest passions. With the pressure of schoolwork, and the stress of commitments to go along with it, it is a mental release to be able to go and do something you love at the end of the day. Mock Trial is one of these releases for me. In Mock Trial, students get to practice the skills of being a lawyer, and compete in competition against other teams, and it is something that I look forward to doing every Tuesday. Especially when so much of school is based around obtaining a good grade, it is so motivating to be able to go to an activity that you love at the end of a school day. Along with Mock Trial, guitar is another passion that I have. I've been playing guitar for three years, and playing guitar is a different world for me. What I mean by this is that sometimes guitar feels like meditation, because I am able to express myself through an instrument. But sometimes, guitar feels electric, especially when I feel inspired by a band or a song, and it is something that creates happiness in my life. Guitar is a mental release that, in our stressful modern world, is something that I can always fall back on. These two passions give me a sense of purpose, and having these passions motivates me through my life.
