A comment on the review of Paul’s visit to a sex club- The exterior shot establishes this as a pier, not a club. Therefore, I assume this takes place at the abandoned piers west of Greenwich Village which were very active cruising areas until they were torn down in the late 80s. One detail is off though. There was no electricity on the piers that would provide the red and blue lights illuminating the scenes. It was strictly AYOR- at your own risk. Dark and dangerous.

@Philip Monaghan , If you watch the short after-show segment, they specifically say they wanted to recreate Christopher Pier.

Noticed a WPIX mic-break in the background of one scene. Female DJ back/announcing “Janie Jones” by The Clash, among others. Could this have been an actual aircheck or a recreation for the show? Would the timeframe align with the advent of the short-lived punk & new wave WPIX format?

I agree that this is a great show. I keep wondering what will happen to Candy now that Frankie has promised his wife a part in her movie? Seems like she should have known better than to partner with him-especially given that she has been so independent. Also, anyone know her backstory-why is she in the business and who is her son’s father?

A good, not great, show. This is a total aside, but the new show this season I like the best is "Kidding" starring Jim Carrey. It may not be for everyone but it is good. I've never been a Jim Carrey fan, what with his histrionics and crazy antics, but he is beyond excellent here. He will be nominated for an Emmy for this performance and I bet will win. What is my comment doing here? It's the only place I could think to put it and it does begin with a comment on "The Deuce." Plus, it all relates to current TV.

@Brainfelt I agree about "Kidding." I've never liked Jim Carrey but find him excellent on this show. It's got a bizarre premise but the acting - Carrey, Catherine Keener and Frank Langella - is outstanding and I've warmed to the show as it goes along. "The Deuce" is a disappointment given how talented Simon is. It's not terrible but so far it's just not very good. The characters aren't very compelling. I'm starting to think Simon could make only one great tv show -"The Wire" - in the same way David Chase could make only one great tv show ("The Sopranos"). That should be enough for anyone and I'm trying to have lower expectations for "The Deuce." But it's often boring...

Richard Price co wrote episode 5 and he is always listed as co -executive producer in the credits A lot of time is spent with Candy explaining to Frankie what a co producer is I bet this is Price's inside joke
Michael Bailey (New Jersey)
Re Schrader, also wrote and directed 'Hardcore', concerning LA porn scene.

Big Mike is the bouncer you mean, not Black Frankie. BF helped but wasn’t the brains behind the operation.
Robin (Cleveland Ohio)
Good episode. The plots keeps forging ahead with personal and cultural struggles. Side note - I could help notice the scene on the basketball court that James Franco has spent time in the gym.

"In this season of transitions, Lori is a reminder of how excruciatingly difficult change can be, even if you’re active in trying to *affect* it." ------- That should be *effect* -- that is, to bring about.
