In Tennessee Senate Race, Financial Missteps Linger in the Background

Blackburn is corrupt, like Trump, like GOP. Go Phil!
RLB (Kentucky)
A change in the Senate won't make any difference. The die has been cast. The Rubicon has been crossed. It's a done deal. Now there's nothing but sound and fury signifying nothing. With Kavanaugh's appointment, we're in for thirty years of backward evolution toward a second Dark Ages. However, in the near future, they will program the human mind in a computer using a "survival" algorithm as a base, which will provide irrefutable proof as to how we have tricked this survival program with our ridiculous beliefs about what is supposed to survive - creating minds programmed de facto for destruction. When this is learned, we will begin the long trek back to reason and sanity. See RevolutionOfReason.com
Shay (Nashville)
“Hey, you stupid, racist southerners vote for my party!” “If you do, I won’t say that your stupid and racist anymore!” said ever liberal posting at the NYT.
DR (New England)
@Shay - Nope not even close, although the sad fact of the matter is that if you vote for a racist you're probably more than OK with racism and if you vote for someone who poisons your air and water, takes away your health care and denies you a living wage it does make one wonder about your thinking and reasoning skills.
Darrell (Charlotte, NC)
Anyone who refuses to answer simple financial questions does not belong in the Senate. And Blackburn has gotten away with it because she ran in a district that would elect a comatose Republican. This is why we need to get politicians out of the redistricting business.
Will Hogan (USA)
If all eligible poor people of all colors do not show up at the polls in November, including in the midwest and south, regardless of the inconvenience and rudeness and difficulty thrust upon them, then they will be sealing their fate, because cutting taxes to rich people and rich corporations will leave no money to help the needy, even to help them stay healthy so they can work their way up the ladder of opportunity. Wise up, you minimum wage workers!!! Your future is in your hands
tnh2o (Tennessee)
Based on the candidates ads here in Tennessee we can vote for Phil Bredesen or Donald Trump. Ms. Blackburn (not a PAC) runs an ad that is nothing but Donald Trump praising her and denigrating and dismissing Mr. Bredesen.
Josh Wilson (Osaka)
I like Bredesen, and our senate needs more moderates like him -people who can be trusted to put the interests of their constituents ahead of their party.
MR (HERE)
Let me get this straight: she has had all kinds of murky money dealings with her family and a lot of other irregularities over the last twenty or thirty years. He benefited from subsidies to build a renewable energy company which, eight years later, is obviously a success for Tennessee. And you just make it sound like they both have similarly questionable money issues? These are false equivalencies, their financial issues are not comparable. Not by a long shot. And she made up stories about selling baby parts, so bad that Twitter suspended her account? Yep, no wonder she is a Trump follower.
Here's the Thing (Nashville)
Also, Say what you will about our two GOP Senators - but neither of them are campaigning for Blackburn, and in fact, back in April, Corker publicly stated that he will not say anything negative about Phil Bredesen:"I'm not going to campaign against someone who I've been a friend with and worked with, you know? So that's the way it's going to be,"
William O. Beeman (San Jose, CA)
I just drove through Tennessee. Bredensen yard signs everywhere. I didn't see one Blackburn sign.
Carl (Tn)
@William O. Beeman Our cities always go to the Democrats. The rest of the state swings red.
KDA (Memphis, TN)
@Carl It's so depressing. My vote for president will never count because of this. We need to at least lobby to split Tennessee's electoral votes.
M (USA)
I used to ride my bike by the TN Governors Mansion everyday. When Mr. Bredesen was elected, he and his lovely wife restored the run down mansion at their expense. He was a good governor and is a good man. Marsha has always been busy in the propaganda world. But she will always be known for her "selling baby parts" stories. She's never been known for the truth and I can see why she and trump would like each other. Both sanctimonious liars.
Tony J Mann (Tennessee )
Most Tennesseans who remember Phil as Governor remember what a terrible job he did to the nation's best road fund, just to make political points. If you folks in New York would come to Tennessee and talk to the mainstream people you would realize they don't like Phil
Milliband (Medford)
@Tony J Mann I spend a lot of time in Tennessee and the people I talk to - even some Republicans- think that Blackburn is a shrill, untrustworthy , opportunists.
JC (Flyover country)
Couldn’t have said it any better. New York telling Tennessee how to vote. Amazing
Carl (Tn)
@Tony J Mann I’m from TN and my friends and I are 100% behind Bredesen. We love him, and the alternative is beyond scary.
B.Sharp (Cinciknnati)
Oh please Tennessean , I am a previous resident of TN when Phil Bredeson was the Governor. Here is a chance to elect him as the Senator, and reject Marsha Blackburn one corrupt trump Republican.
David Gregory (Sunbelt)
Ms Blackburn is also well known as a loyal servant of the Telecommunications lobby. Ms Blackburn has a degree in Home Economics - I am not kidding. Mr Bredesen came to office facing a tough budget situation and handled it very well without raising taxes, he left the state far better financially than when he arrived and did it without throwing the poor and disabled under the bus. His tenure as both Mayor of Nashville and Governor of Tennessee are widely remembered as highly successful. He would make a great Senator.
Sharon (Tn)
If you or someone you know needs healthcare, vote for Bredesen. I was a volunteer on healthcare during the house healthcare hearings, and the only word for Blackburn was mean, snotty and rude to the people testifying. Never seen anything like it.
Larry (Florida)
Bredesen was a good Governor but anyone who thinks he won't be a Dem rubber stamp is fooling themselves.
Stephen Hawking's Football Boots (Nashville, TN)
@Larry I'll take that over a Republican rubber stamp any day.
Shay (Nashville)
I voted for Bredeson in the primaries, but will be voting Republican next month. I hope others do likewise.
Milliband (Medford)
When I worked in state government I did some travelling, and if I ever submitted a sack of burned paper for my expense receipts, I would be searching for a private sector job the next day.
wolf201 (Prescott, Arizona)
@Milliband That shows you her contempt for our Government and the citizens who pay taxes and her salary. Sounds like she doesn't belong there.
John (Nashville, Tennessee)
Trump and Blackburn both share a love for deception. Neither one would know the truth on the street on a sunny day.
Arthur (Nashville, Tennessee)
As a lifelong Tennessean I can tell you that Marsha Blackburn would be a terrible senator. She got into politics as a way of making money and she certainly did, as did her family. She would not be an independent thinker and would have zero chance of ever working on anything in a bipartisan manner. She is also not a good campaigner, her ads and those run by her backers (McConnell, Koch) are negative and mostly untrue. This is not the kind of campaign Tennesseans like, just ask Diane Black how that overly negative campaigning worked.
Here's the Thing (Nashville)
Bredesen won a state wide contest in 2006 with 68% of the vote. He was able to do that because as governor he brought companies like Nissan and Volkswagen to TN. Currently, (including a GM Plant and other suppliers), there over 135,000 auto workers in Tennessee. That means something. People are aware of that. These companies are all over the state. On the other side, Blackburn has hitched her wagon to Trump. Trump, the person whose steel tariffs are impacting the auto industries in TN. Secondly, Bredesen is well versed in health care issues, ..and poll after poll show that Tennesseans want affordable health care. Blackburn, wants to eradicate the ACA. Poll after Poll shows that the economy and healthcare are what is most important to voters ....and that is why we have such a close race in an overwhelmingly red state.
Ed (Oklahoma City)
No one knows how to grift better than a Republican office holder. It's as predictable as death and taxes.
Will. (NYCNYC)
Bredesen sounds like a moderate Republican. Not somebody who just wants to fight every minute of every day and wear everyone out. And he sounds like a nice guy. Tennessee could do a lot worse.
Peter (Cape Town)
He. Brought. The. Titans. And the Predators. Difficult to believe that she is within 20 points of this great man.
Malcolm (Santa fe)
saying “A vote for Marsha is really a vote for me and everything that we stand for.” Yeah, corruption. Vote for this thief, she’s like me!
Mike (West Tennessee)
The last time I voted was in 2008 for Barack Obama but I'll be voting in November and from here on out as a republican. I think the democrats have gone off the rails on a lot of issues that has a lot to do with their hatred for Trump. I would have seriously considered voting for Bredesen but after the way the Democratic senators treated Kavanaugh I think Lindsey Graham put it best.
Trebor (USA)
@Mike You think Kavanaugh is legitimate supreme court material? After his shocking behavior at the second hearing? That was not the comportment of a supreme court Justice. Not even remotely. Democrats regardless of their merits or lack thereof are completely correct to be fighting against this nominee. Most of the serious legal scholars and experts agree he is not qualified because of his temperament and extreme biases. He himself made that clear in his testimony. But congrats on your wealth. Republicans have been taken over by fifth column Libertarian radicals who believe wealth should be more powerful than democracy. I guess you believe that too. Which can only mean you are wealthy. So congrats on that.
Katz (Tennessee)
I live in Nashville, and I'm voting for Phil Bredesen. Marsha Blackburn is simply not interested in representing Tennessee and Tennesseans; she is a viciously partisan Trump supporter who will hurt our state if if helps Trump and his agenda. Last week, Blackburn blew off two debates with Bredesen to attent a $10,000 per couple fundraiser with Trump. Bredesen appeared alone in Chattanooga, where one of the debates was to be held Monday night. Asked how we could stop the partisan divide that is hurting all Americans, he said, "First you have elect someone who wants to do that." Bredesen does and he will. I urge any Tennessean reading this to go to the polls and vote for Bredesen next month.
Josh (Cincinnati, OH)
This sort of false equivalency is the reason good candidates lose to worse candidates.
Kate Baptista (Knoxville)
If Marsha were a viable candidate she'd be far ahead of an aging Democrat. The election will, as usual, depend on who is fired up enough to go vote. And that won't help Marsha.
xcubbies9 (Maine)
During a House sess Blackburn asked Mark Zuckerberg a question; when he started to answer she cut him off, say,' I'm not going to let you filibuster me. ' Clearly a hardcore DJT ally.
Dawn (Colorado)
Could we find a candidate who could campaign on being "clean"? I think we have a few good choices here in Colorado. At least the mud slinging has been minimal.
Stephen Hawking's Football Boots (Nashville, TN)
@Dawn Did you not read the article? Phil Bredesen is a quiet, moderate gentleman who has run a positive campaign.
Chico (New Hampshire)
Marsha Blackburn is a real sleazy politician that doesn't mind lying to her advantage.
Rocko World (Earth)
Oh, so she's a republican...
Milliband (Medford)
Trump's support for Blackburn can be sort of like the running back that scores two touchdowns but fumbles three times and keeps both teams in the game.
AWENSHOK (HOUSTON)
Tennessee is still struggling with Scopes.....
KJ (Tennessee)
@AWENSHOK And has never heard of Snopes.
Naomi Fein (New York City)
@AWENSHOK Yes! Glad you brought it up.
Gsoxpit (BOS)
Very good.
Bill (Knoxville, Tennessee)
Anyone who thinks Bredesen would do anything other than fall in line with Schumer and the liberal left is kidding themselves. A vote for Bredesen is a vote for Schumer and the liberal activists who are trying to tear down all the conservatives. "Boy, y'all want power, I hope you never get it."
DR (New England)
@Bill - Oh the horror, imagine having affordable education and health care, clean air and water and a living wage.
Naomi Fein (New York City)
@Bill Boy, y'all being paid by the GOP.
Milliband (Medford)
@Bill You do know that there is an independent Democratic senator right across the state line in West Virginia and your assertion that Bredesen will not look out for the people in Tennessee is unfounded, He had plenty of liberal critics when he cut back on TennCare as governor and you know it.
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
He also took tax breaks that he recently returned. To me it is a question of an elderly former governor who is a Dem. He was a decent governor, but a senator is much different. A governor can reach across the party barrier where a senator would find it much more difficult if a Dem, that is why dems vote as a block on almost everything. No dem can do what I want my senator to do, I want corker long gone for focusing on stupid things about the president instead of delivering on his policies that he supports. I don't care about style, I do about policy.
John (Livermore, CA)
@vulcanalex Fantastic! Policy! A senator that is utterly corrupt will have fantastic policy to along with the president who is utterly corrupt. Now that its demonstrated that Trump has been cheating on his taxes (not that we didn't already know), it's fantastic to hear those in Tennessee still love his "policy". You know the one's where he disregards science, facts, logic, all those.
DR (New England)
@vulcanalex - Interesting. So you must be upset about Trump's policies that involve poisoning your air and water, making health care less affordable and FEMA less effective, right?
Stephen Hawking's Football Boots (Nashville, TN)
@John Not this Tennessean. Trump — and by proxy Marsha — is an embarrassment. Many of my fellow Tennesseans feel the same. That's why I'm voting for Phil Bredesen as Senator and Karl Dean as Governor.
James Fitzpatrick (Richardson Tx)
This is just another example of politics being about the politicians, their families, money and power. At one time it was mildly entertaining to read about the next crash and burn. I am seriously worried undoing this mess might not be possible: Neo, Morpheus, where are you?
Charlie (New York City)
Tennessee has a history of effective Republican senators who believed in crossing the aisle for the good of the country -- in my lifetime, Howard Baker and Bill Brock spring to mind. While Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander have been called "moderates," in this generation that basically means they're willing to speak with Democrats behind the scenes without spitting. They have always voted the Republican party line in public, never ultimately crossing into the middle. So if some thoughtful Tennessee GOP voters want to view Bredesen as a stealth Republican to help him get elected, great. He may actually be willing to work in the middle. We know from her track record in D.C. that Blackburn is never going to do so.
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
@Charlie To me dems would have to come over to the middle on many issues. Illegals and legal immigration they need to do what the president proposed, same as with the "barrier" to keep various things out of our country from Mexico. Improved trade same thing. The middle in policy is in Republican proposals, not socialist ones.
DR (New England)
@vulcanalex - The residents of your state don't seem to mind "socialism" when accepting tax money from the residents of blue states. Btw your mango messiah hires plenty of immigrants and you're kidding yourself if you think all of them are here legally. As for trade, Trump products are made overseas, mainly in China.
felixfelix (Spokane)
@DR and both Donald and Ivanka have worked the China connection from the White House to vastly increase their business interests in China (trademarks, etc.)
