$1.3 Million Homes in Massachusetts, Washington and New Mexico

How many people actually buy and own a million dollar home with the expectation of fully paying off the mortgage before selling it? I paid one million, will you give me two? Gambling rules supreme and goes virtually unchecked in the country now, the casinos, the lotteries, the stock market and recently more sports betting. But nowhere more ominously than in the giant casino game known as Million Dollar Real Estate Mortgages. Round and round she goes, and where she stops, everyone with eyes in their heads knows.

Dear New York Times: That's not an 'adobe-style' house in Santa Fe. It's a Territorial house. Different style, different construction, different history. That's why there aren't any vigas, latillas, or rounded adobe walls. Next time, you'll know better.

So, here we have three $1,3 million homes and in all three of them the dreadful kitchens do not reflect the individual styles of the homes and would have to be re-done. Cost? I would guess at least about $10,000. And the one in Santa Fe absolutely does not give homage to the architecture of that area...that home could be in Anywhere Town, USA. If a realtor had the audacity to show me any three of the homes at that price, I would just walk out the door. PS: Anytime soon stainless steel appliances will be considered as dated as the avocado green ones in the 1960's.

It occurred to me a few weeks back that I'm depressed by looking at houses worth more than my 401(k)s, and it's not that I don't make good money. I guess I just don't make great money and/or didn't inherit it.

@Kate I traveled all over Southeast Asia. Those people had absolutely nothing and yet were happy all the time. I come back to the US and people complain about this. I just don't know... If you really want a million dollar home then what are you doing about it?
Kate (Philadelphia)
@William Smith I actually don't want a million dollar home. I was commenting more on financial disparity. If I had the $ to buy and support one of these homes, I'd just retire immediately instead of buying one. I work in an industry where I'm on call 24/7/365. I have a Master's in Computer Science and a major technical certification that fewer than 400K people worldwide have earned. Working a 60 hour week is called "slacking" around here. Please don't assume people who can't afford a $1.3 million home aren't working hard enough.
William Smith (United States)
@Kate Never assumed you aren't working hard enough.

What's the point of owning an adobe house in Santa Fe when it doesn't have vigas, kiva fireplaces, and tiles? Might has well buy a cookie cutter ranch house with beige walls and beige carpet.
FRITZ (CT)
@Linda In other words, 'cookie cutter' Santa Fe? So if you live in Santa Fe you must also wear bolo ties, chunky turquoise squash blossom necklaces, concho belts, western boots and black hats? I don't care for the color schemes of this Santa Fe house but the style is fabulous. I'm from New Mexico and I love--and miss--the culture and feel of the place but honestly sometimes the whole 'southwest theme' gets a bit out of hand. And ridiculous. https://postersofsantafe.com/products/another-victim-of-santa-fe-style

A chance to own a 200 year old house is nice, then the owners mess up the kitchen remodel....
Luder (France)
I think I would find the vigas, kiva fireplaces or Saltillo floor tiles, which are evidently dreaded by some, preferable to what it is the designers have done to that house in New Mexico.
Chris (Dallas)
@Luder Absolutely. Why live in Santa Fe and not use the beautiful tiles and other decorations of that region?

@Luder I live in the Southwest. I find the slavish adherence to the same interior features to be stifling. The Santa Fe house here is a breath of fresh air.
ACM (Palo Alto, CA)
Leading Edge Boomer, I agree with you 100%. That Santa Fe home is gorgeous!
