Martha Roby Wins Alabama House Runoff After Reconciling With Trump

Roby likes to wrap herself in the flag and surround herself with uniforms, so how can she support Trump who has continually undermined the military's sacrifices made in World War II, like going after NATO, our western allies, the UN, and free trade? And she accepted Trump's endorsement after his horrible performance in Helsinki? I look forward to voting against her in November.

All republicans powering through!

The NYTimes and others seem to forget - many republicans did not support trump. Those who did vote for him were made up of long time dems, moderates in areas of the country where the 2016 dem message didn't resonate (open borders, free college for all regardless of academics, tax increases to spend more on failed social re-engineering policies, etc.), and far right voters (religious conservatives). If the dems had given the country someone to vote for, trump would have lost. If the NYTimes and other outlets had stopped with the daily barrage before and after the primaries, trump would never have even been a viable candidate.

What were the voting results? Really incomplete reporting. C’mon!

So, condemning Trump's boast about grabbing women's crotches and forcibly kissing them was the only time she didn't prostrate herself politically to the Godfather? What passes as political courage in the Trump Party is pitiful. Pretty soon, the Republican who declares that this president should accept and be guided by American intelligence assessment instead of Russian lies will be hailed as "true patriots." Oh, that's already happened.

Good to see the normal laws of political gravity still apply. Intra-party disloyalty to Trump is not fatal, given the right circumstances.

Though she is a Republican congratulations to her.

Its good news finally. I do not like policies of the conservatives but do love the way they love our nation and that patriotism is waning in Trump controlled GOP. Serious questions continued to be raised .. more in tje past Mondays events ..and I am glad we as USA will win ... we will argue about policies but on USA interest worldwide .. we cannot budge.. we cannot be puppets of putin!

I am in very rural Alabama at the moment visiting family, although I don't live here anymore. From the endless barrage of attack ads, some on Roby but generally a fixture for all candidates with deeper pockets, I can report that the campaign scheme is who can pledge the most loyalty to Trump. Attacks consist of accusing opponents of everything from being real Democrats to siding with Pelosi to opponents having once had Obama bumper stickers on their cars. The accusations are insane. This was all airing during the Helskini debacle, and that display doesn't seem to have moved the needle one bit. Roby isn't an indicator of much that's meaningful.

Well, the rest of the US knows Alabama’s one picnic short of a sandwich, so no surprises. NASA, how can you get anyone to work there?
Lee (California)
@Name Goodness I needed that laugh! According to U.S. News: Alabama education level rates #46 nationally (!!) "but Alabama offers the 2nd best drinking water nationally" (!!) So we can assume the low educational achievement is not due to lead poisoning?
TT (Alabama)
The low educational achievement is due to widespread poverty, institutionalized racism and de-facto segregation and marginalization of our large minority population. But we sure do appreciate your ad-hominem attacks. I would call your attack elitist, but no educated elite would make such a sweeping and crude generalization.
Psst (overhere)
Basically she abandoned her values for an endorsement. Is that representative of her district ? Just wondering.

Good to hear even Alabamians may be beginning to see that Trump is a Putin puppet. Too many of his "supporters" may be Putin supporters and like what they see.

A Republican who talks out of both sides of her mouth, first finding Trump "unacceptable", then finding her inner cowardice like the rest of the lot, beats another Republican in a primary. Yawn.

Dear Mrs. Roby, If Congress lacks the moral fortitude to pursue impeachment, you deserve to be judged as harshly as he. And if the country as a whole cannot weather the fallout from some disgruntled Trump hardliners, it scarcely merits status as a liberal democracy. Robust nations are not held hostage by their own extremists.

Ms. Roby hits every stereotype of the modern southern conservative woman. Take on Trump for his disgusting behaviors toward women, get punished by that disgusting man, make amends with that disgusting man and win your primary election. I am not impressed that this woman has sold out her values to get re-elected. It is not just a statement of the south and Alabama, it is the current state of Republicans around the country. Sooner or later most Republicans these days all succumb to this narcissist bully.

I am confused by this headline. Ms. Roby recently embraced Mr. Trump and he endorsed her, which went a long way in helping her win. I am very concerned about the spin I read in these pages and on various other media outlets, all giving potential false hope of a "blue wave", anti-Trump vote. Trump and his forces are extremely powerful, the Republican Party has a ton of cash and the Koch Brothers have committed countless millions to help Republicans retain Congress. To those out there who are comforting themselves with the thought of a "blue wave" in November: stop deluding yourselves. Trump is incredibly savvy and the Republicans have shown themselves to be masters at playing the long game. The Democrats have no strong, central, coherent message that is needed to win nationally. Nancy Pelosi has been a catastrophe for the Democratic Party and Chuck Schumer is, well Chuck Schumer. I wouldn't put a dime on him in a street fight with McConnell. There is actually very little cause for hope that a change is coming.

Martha Roby was the hard-charging genius who asked Hillary Clinton this probing question: Who else was at your home? Were you alone?” Roby asked. “I was alone, yes,” Clinton replied. After Roby asked, “The whole night?” Clinton laughed as she responded, “Yes, the whole night.”—- The Hill. Then she proceeded to get stroppy because people laughed. Lawd, where do they find these people?

I lived in Alabama for ten years and rarely agreed with Martha Roby's politics, but I was pleasantly surprised when she withdrew her endorsement of then candidate Donald Trump because of the reprehensible remarks he made on the released Access Hollywood tapes. I am so sorry to see her become just another Trump syncophant and join the Republicans in Congress who do not hold Trump responsible for his words and actions because they value their jobs over their responsibility to our country.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
Trump only endorsed her so that when he meets her he can do those things that he talked about in the "Access Hollywood" tape. So people of Alabama, you lost.
GARRY (SUMMERFIELD,FL)
Trump waits until the last minute to endorse her. Guess he was making sure she was going to win first. Then he takes ALL OF THE CREDIT for her landside victory due to his late endorsement. How full of himself can he get before he explodes. LOL!!!!

Alabama nearly elected one for the Senate who serially harassed and even assaulted teenage girls and now supports one for the House that changed her mind and now supports a president who bragged about sexual assault. No, this isn't about the people of Alabama, but it does shine a light on human tribalism.

Meaningless! You essentially had two nominees, who policy wise, are on the same page! Despite, the original problem, Roby had with Donald Trump!

More evidence how deeply sick the Republican Party is. Trump is only the symptom, although of course one of the most despicable.
Robert (Seattle)
Ms. Roby was correct when she criticized Mr. Trump. Surely she did not need to join the Trump cult in order to win this election. As a solid Republican--with or without Trump's support--she should have been able to beat her only challenger--who had recently changed from the Democratic to the Republican parties. One hopes against hope that her support for Trump was just political expediency which will be followed by a return to sanity. There are already too many servile bad-faith immoral-opportunist House Trump Republicans who are abandoning their Constitutional oversight duties and selling out the nation.
