We not only allow men who are either sexual predators, physically abusive or ethically challenged, (Mr. Shine) to remain in white house positions, we're offering them jobs! Maybe he's a close friend of the Kushners!
Robert Coane (Finally Full Canadian)
• Mr. Shine, who was forced out as co-president at Fox News last May for his handling of sexual harassment scandals at the network, has met with President Trump in recent weeks about taking the West Wing communications job, which has been vacant since Hope Hicks left the job in March. SURPRISE!!!!!!!
MIMA (heartsny)
Job posting: Communication Director for Donald Trump. Must have sleazy personal background. Others need not apply.
Chris (Auburn)
I'm sure it has been said, but it bears repeating. Our president needs help sweeping away sex scandals. Though, how is Shine going to manage charges of conspiracy, corruption, and money laundering?
Telly55 (St Barbara)
Shine fits this new role as PR/Media gatekeeper for Donald Trump. After all, Shine keep in the shadows as long as he could the sexual harassment problems best exemplified by FOX pundit Bill O'Reilly. Shine has the kind of skills Donald Trump needs--to obscure, repress, reframe, deny--simply keep out of sight--the kinds of problems that have already surfaced, but which are in perpetual need of hiding. Shine new of the multi-million dollar pay-outs O'Reilly made with the hope of keeping his documented rapaciousness out of sight. Shine will have his work cut out for him--again. But it is too late: we know too much--and we wil soon know much more--about the noxious behaviors Shine will hope to conceal.
BMUS (TN)
Really?! Bill Shine? Can this administration get any worse? Is ‘must have significant experience in the sexual harassment and assault of coworkers and subordinates one of the Trump administration’s posted job requirements?
James (Savannah)
"Mr. Shine was accused in several lawsuits of covering up Mr. Ailes’s behavior and dismissing concerns from women who complained about it." "You're hired."
Amelia (midwest)
We are now holding everyone accountable for sexual misconduct outside of the White House. When will it be #TheyToo?
JCAZ (Arizona)
Do we think Mr. Shine could break Mr. Scaramucci's record for days in the job?
kaw7 (SoCal)
Once upon a time, Trump contented himself with scraping the bottom of the barrel to fiill positions in his White House. Now he’s resorted to tilting up the barrel to see what slithers out from underneath.
Lee Harrison (Albany / Kew Gardens)
So perfect, so fitting. A guy thrown out of Fox News for covering up and manipulating sexual harassment on Ailes behalf rather than doing anything to stop it is now communications director at the Whitehouse. And not a peep from any Republican, eh? They all think this is just hunky, dory, right?
Barney Rubble (Bedrock)
Perfect. At what point does the President pull of his mask and reveal that he is none other than Sean Hannity?
Lou Good (Page, AZ)
Well, it might limit his choice of restaurants. Other that that, who cares? She didn't do anything important other than endure his "jokes" and neither will he. Communications Director for this administration is about as important as Ivanka's hairdresser. Less, probably.
James (St. Paul, MN.)
"Bill Shine, who was ousted for his handling of sexual harassment scandals at the network........." Sounds like a perfect fit for the Trump Administration.
Bob (Pennsylvania)
How utterly odious - and perfect for this WH!
moab mike (utah)
I really think it's time for us to invoke the clause in the Declaration of Independence and end this government altogether--this government has become destructive to the pursuits of life, liberty, and happiness. The coup d'etat is complete; the fascists are winning. let's not play along with them...this isn't how America is supposed to be. E Pluribus Unum--some of us remember.
LT (Chicago)
White? Check Male? Check. Experience selling lies? Check. Comfort the comfortable and afflict the afflicted? Check. Have the Boss's back and look the other way as needed? Check. No matter what he does? Check. Welcome to White House, Mr. Shine. You'll fit right in.
Frank Smith (Florence, OR)
"Check, and mate."
Dot (New York)
Any former Fox News exec should be an excellent choice for the daily White House Office of Miscommunications.
LPG (Wake Forest)
Chris Rock was right .... people are failing up.
Daisy (Missouri)
So trump is hiring people who foster an atmosphere where sexual harrassment and abuse can thrive. Got it.
Frank Smith (Florence, OR)
You've only just noticed?
buffnick (New Jersey)
Bill O'Reilly was late submitting his resume' for the job.
Panthiest (U.S.)
Can you imagine the response of utter horror and dismay from the GOP and evangelicals if President Obama had hired someone like Shine?
ANDY (Philadelphia)
No bar low enough to keep one from being invited to join this administration.
ThoughtfulAttorney (Somewhere Nice )
He will be right at home with a president who prefers Fox Faux News hysteria to his daily briefings. He is also right there with the same type of sexual harassment claims made against Trump. Misogynistic Prevaricators lacking in intellectual girth. It is a band of the worst of America in leadership. The unraveling of our democracy continues. Authoritarianism is the next logical expectation. Our America! This is awful.
jazz one (Wisconsin)
'The (disgraced)Fox (executive) guarding the (Red) Hen .. and the White House?' Yeah, seems about right. Nothing surprises anymore. Nothing.
Jeremy (Vermont)
Another predictable move by the sadistic and amoral leader of this country. Nothing he does shocks me anymore. I hope this numbness does not infect others, otherwise we are in for another 6 years of this nonsense.
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
Joke. The new Minister of Propaganda from Faux News, with a degree in journalism from Trump U. ? Excellence and professionalism have died Hey Base - let me know how Trump America works out for you . (Im taking jobs with a future; clean drinking water; clean air; honesty; integrity, excellence; professionalism, courtesy, not saddling your kids with a trillion dollar deficit. government of your bedroom), civil discourse.....) You been soooo played, What about those tax returns - no other POTUS has ever refused. What is he hiding? You think he has your back? HA! Fools.(ask Harley Davidson)
Sunny Izme (Tennessee)
One might say that Trump has taken a shine to Fox, or more aptly, from Fox. It's always good to hire experience and Mr. Shine's credentials in hiding sexual misconduct will serve him well at the White House.
Hy Nabors (Minneapolis)
Don't forget the wife-beaters!
Sheeba (Brooklyn)
Why do sexual harassers, co conspirators and even alleged perpetrators get a job in this White House?
Chris (Auburn)
I was hoping this post was a joke with a punchline. But no, it's not a joke and this reality show lost its entertainment value in January of 2017.
Frank Smith (Florence, OR)
Is that a rhetorical question?
Stop and Think (Buffalo, NY)
Sure hope that Shine knows how to take a joke. The late night TV hosts and their writers are going to have a great time dicing him. In case Shine has any skeletons in his closet, his family is about to pay a huge price.
Frank Smith (Florence, OR)
"In case?" "Ain't nobody here but us chickens."
Valerie (California )
Gag me.
Ash (Los Angeles)
Sheesh! I do believe if the Pope’s job was open, that DT would hire the devil.
David (San Jose, CA)
What a perfect hire for this cesspool of a White House. Creepy old man President hires fixer of serial sexual harassment by another wealthy, powerful male executive. Why any woman would ever, ever vote for these people is incomprehensible.
Richard The Lionhearted (The Real World)
Maybe Bill Cosby didn’t want the job.
PH (near NYC)
I'm moving to Turkey rather than live in a country run by sexist (and worse) turkeys. Or... we can remember to vote, and actually open the door, go outside, and go vote on Tuesday November 6th .
XXX (Somewhere in the U.S.A.)
I think that we never appreciated the degree to which what are now referred to somewhat derisively as the "mainstream media" were a very important part of the social glue that held this (apparently very hostile) country together.
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
There is nothing new to see (or read) here. Donald Trump is merely doing the same as all Presidents; filling positions with people who reflect his values and ideology.
Dave (New York)
Makes perfect sense for this administration.
Kat (Maryland)
I don't think he'll look good in a mini-skirt - lol
T Montoya (ABQ)
Hope Hicks. Remember when she left and all the talking heads wondered how Trump was going to get by without his "handler"? Where would we be without the talking heads?
ams (houston)
well, we are already a media run state, whatever.
Carol lee (Minnesota)
May be Trump has engaged in someday Ailes type behavior in the WH and needs Shine to cover it up.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
I just want to know why they call this job White House Communications Director when real title for the job is Minister of Propaganda or is that Sarah Sanders job I can't tell which is which.
Fred (Up North)
Well, there's a surprise! Predators flock together.
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
How will Sarah Huckabee-Sanders spin- this?
Kathrine (Austin)
State TV. All part of the taking over of America by an authoritarian. How long before it's complete?
drjillshackford (New England)
The Swamp gets wider, deeper, but more densely crowded It is literally and figuratively sickening. The rot in Washington spreads like the malignancy it is, and at a galloping pace.
Njlatelifemom (Njregion)
Forced out at Fox over decades of poorly handled sexual harassment scandals but gets a second career as WH comms director. I am not surprised, given that this administration is sort of a rest home for the marginalized. I guess Shine will be able to give the old kitty grabber some real world advice that he will need, given that Cohen's records will soon be released to prosecutors. I would imagine that Summer Zervos and Stormy Daniels are just two of the legions of women that were paid off for one type of sexual antic or another.
say what (NY,NY)
If Shine condone illicit and inappropriate behavior, he will fit right in to trump world.
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
Trump continues to feather his nest with his friends, relatives, cronies and sycophants. He has simply refilled the swamp with his favored few. Such is progress in the wonderful world of Trump.
NRoad (Northport)
I guess Roger Ailes, Harvey Weinstein and the Marquis de Sade weren't available.
Dan (Baltimore)
So then he'll be working for Fox again, pretty much, except this time with more power over the network than before. The mouthpiece for the Mouthpiece.
Sarasota Blues (Sarasota, FL)
And the daily embarrassment to be an American continues...
Joe (Sausalito,CA)
Fine. Another hire from a cartoon factory.
fox94610 (San Francisco)
The sarcastic jokes about this latest hire write themselves. Pointing out the folly of this administration has become redundant, obvious and does little but galvanize his base.
Steph (Piedmont)
Let's not get distracted. Yes it's terrible but I'm not sure this matters in the bigger scheme of things.
AWENSHOK (HOUSTON)
A perfect candidate! He can handle communications AND sexual harassment complaints - he brings an intense understanding of the so-called president's behavior towards women to the position. Every groper needs a compassionate ear - for something.
LJB (CT)
Who will be next? Hannity replacing Marc Short as Director of Legislative Affairs? How low can we go?
Alan (Hawaii)
The Rule of Mutual Toxicity applies again.
Michael Tyndall (SF)
It's hard to predict whether his reputation will improve or worsen by working in the Trump White House. Given there seems to be no depths to which Trump won't sink, I'm betting worse. My one bit of advice? Bill should be sure to get his legal fees comped up front. He'll be testifying soon.
XXX (Somewhere in the U.S.A.)
People keep feeding themselves to the meat grinder, apparently in the belief that somehow their fate will be different. But at least in this particular meat grinder, they will deserve it, so there is some satisfaction in that.
Marie (Boston)
RE: "Officials at the White House are aware that they will face blowback for appointing someone so closely tied to Mr. Ailes and the culture of harassment toward women at Fox News" Well, its not like Shine was recorded on tape talking about assaulting women, or had an affair (or two, or three - we really don't know how many), or supported abusers as Trump has, oh wait, he did support an abuser. Well he does have that in common with Trump and so sure, we aren't even talking about shooting someone on 5th Avenue here so why wouldn't Trump weather the storm? The bigger question is why wouldn't Trump want bird of a feather shines? Good old boys have to stick together. Tell me who your friends are and I'll know you.
susheela8 (Fairbanks, AK)
“Mr. Shine, who was forced out as co-president at Fox last May for his handling of sexual harassment scandals at the network, has met with President Trump in recent weeks about taking the West Wing communications job...” Someone in school with Trump’s behavior as a sexual predator and or sexual harasser. The swamp is overflowing, how can they breathe? How can we?
Next Conservatism (United States)
There's a terrible beauty in the hubris, arrogance, and consistency of the Republican Party's actions. This is just one small example in the midst of the border tragedy, the Court-packing and the inevitable assault on Roe, and the war on Mueller we'll see by the end of this year. We haven't seen anything like this since the 1960s. No, this isn't an overreaction. Se the pattern here. They elevate the likes of Bill Shine not despite his record but because of it. He's an affront to Americans whom they are now compelled to silence and marginalize.
Tom (N/A)
And the scariest thing is... they are winning. 90% approval rating among Republicans. And the Democrats in New York are going to send a socialist to the House. It’s getting worse by the day.
Karn Griffen (Riverside, CA)
Now we are getting down to the bottom of the barrel. The polo possible white house employees is getting smaller and smaller. Such a role will not look good on future resumes.
D Price (Wayne, NJ)
Is it just me, or does a whiff of scandal seem to be on the list of qualifications for a job w/Trump? Ya know, along with lack of ethics and willingness to take the loyalty pledge...
MRose (Looking for options)
"Officials at the White House are aware that they will face blowback for appointing someone so closely tied to Mr. Ailes and the culture of harassment toward women at Fox News. But they said Wednesday that they believe they can weather it." Well, why not? They have weathered everything else that has happened since last January -- and before. Trump is like teflon. Nothing sticks to him.
E. Smith (NYC)
The new "Teflon Don."
Rick Gage (Mt Dora)
They're filling Hope Hick's position and I still don't know what Hope Hick's did in the first place.
JTBence (Las Vegas, NV)
To Mr. Shine: Run, run as fast as you can away from the train wreck that is the Trump West Wing. No one who has ever been attached to Mr. Trump has walked away with their reputation intact, and yours could stand with a little polishing after your service to Roger Ailes. I seriously doubt if you need the money, and you certainly do not need the headaches induced by a POTUS who can't keep his lies straight. Best wishes on a rosy future anywhere but the West Wing.
Mike R (Chicago)
"One senior White House official said that few people internally were concerned about the accusations that Mr. Shine played a role in concealing Mr. Ailes’ behavior, in part because some staffers think Mr. Shine was just doing his job to protect the company." To claim that he did not know is one thing, however implausible. To claim that he knew, but covering up sexual harassment and assault was justified to protect the company is another entirely. Calling it like it is, some people truly are deplorables.
Joey Y (Bay Area, CA)
I always try to hope for the best for our country and the elected leaders, but I can’t help but be ashamed to know that this is where we are. A man like Reagan would never have someone who was complicit in workplace sexual assault in a top position. He would have known and appreciated that the office itself was more important than that. We have really fallen very far, and for a time these creeps will have these positions, but when that pendulum swings back the other way and Trump’s braying fanatics are left out of any conversations, I will feel very little sympathy for them. They are so desperate to have some kind of “win” that they are only souring their own nostalgic image and instead looking more and more like the worst historical elements of the nation’s history.
njglea (Seattle)
Good. Now we will know right where to find him and the other traitors who are trying to destroy OUR United States of America. Lock them all up and throw away the key. Or Off With Their Heads. NOW.
Quandry (LI,NY)
With his experience and background as noted in the article, Shine sounds like a great replacement for Hope Hicks and provide Trump company for what Trump connotes as his Pennsylvania Ave "prison"! Further, Trump and Shine sound like they would be without peer to commiserate and bond with each other!
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, Calif.)
Just as I imagined Sarah turning ever so slightly sweeter.
jwh (NYC)
He has all the requirements for a job in this White House: disgraced due to accusations of sexual harassment. Perfect! You're hired!
Max Greenberg (Palo Alto)
Another qualifying skill useful at the White House: experience working in a money laundry.
Rolf (Grebbestad)
Shine is a communications genius who made Fox News number one. He is an excellent choice for preparing Trump to run for a second term.
jeffk (Virginia)
You are OK with him covering up sexual harassment issues at Fox?
LFDJR (San Francisco)
Bring it on! Let Bill shine! Hopefully he will bring some sunshine to the darkness of this White House. His appointment will bring further sunshine to the caliber of talent that this Administration can attract. His warts are known. Hopefully he has learned from his mis-steps at Fox. Donald Trump will have another guy in close proximity to him who has been wounded so he will put up with Trump and do what he is told to do. Can't wait to see what nickname he gets.
Maureen Kennedy (Piedmont CA)
His warts are known. And that's why he shouldn't move in to direct communications for the President of the US. Any communications professional knows that this is the definition of tone-deaf, and should not go forward. So should WH personnel.
chambolle (Bainbridge Island)
A company man known for covering up his bosses' bad behavior, of which there has been plenty. What a perfect fit for the Trump White House!
Greg Tutunjian (Newton,MA)
No surprise to see Trump offering this role to a like-minded male. The swamp just got denser (in all possible implications of that word.)
Daniel Smith (Colorado)
Ah yes, more of the "best people" philosophy underscored in this vaunted administration...
Sparky (NYC)
Mishandling allegations of sexual harassment is a major selling point for Trump.
BKLYNJ (Union County)
"Officials at the White House are aware that they will face blowback for appointing someone so closely tied to Mr. Ailes and the culture of harassment toward women at Fox News." That's not a bug. It's a feature.
David J (NJ)
Oh those evangelicals are going to love this family values guy.
Jack Bush (Asheville, North Carolina)
Trump’s proposed new White House Communications Director, Bill Shine, is an accused serial sexual abuser himself and was the principal enabler of sexual abuse at the Fox News Network. For many years Shine led the coverup of decades of sexual abuse by Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly and by many other Fox News executives and on air personalities. He is the man who coordinated and expedited the payoffs to the abuse victims and who also illegally hid the millions of dollars in Fox News cash payments and other benefits from Fox’s Board of Directors and shareholders. Shine is the man who hired the private detectives who ripped apart the abuse victims lives and it is Shine who ordered the leaking of intimate details of the victims lives in order to humiliate and intimidate them. Shine led the attempts to blackmail the abuse victims into dropping their charges against senior Fox News employees and Shine is the man who personally threatened to retaliate against the abuse victims at Fox News. Shine personally led the retaliation efforts against many of the victims. With this kind of background, Shine will be a perfect fit with Trump and his Administration.
RickyDick (Montreal)
I wonder if Roy Moore was on the short list for the job.
Caren (Ithaca, NY)
A seemingly limitless supply of failed human beings...
Mary Susan Williams (Kent,Ct)
Geeeez! Who does the hiring? I will refrain from using language that is inappropriate...
Joey Y (Bay Area, CA)
Trump does, and as an aging creep himself he looks for enablers as usual. I am go grateful that no one is immune to time, aging, and eventual decline. The way these people and that base is acting, I suspect they will have fewer and fewer heirs for their behaviors.
Dean (US)
Classic. The serial harasser in the Oval Office wants someone on his team who has experience defending and making excuses for other serial harassers. Every time I think this Administration has gone as low as it can go, it goes even lower. Also, could it be any more obvious that Fox News is the propaganda arm of this White House and the GOP?
RP Smith (Marshfield, Ma)
Anyone paying attention already knows that Fox News is already part of the White House communications team. A big part of it.
Steve Kennedy (Deer Park, Texas)
Mr. Trump seems to relish these opportunities to do things that most people find disgusting, just because he can. Mr. Trump's "god complex" (an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility) is overwhelming even his histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders.
Njlatelifemom (NJregion)
Fox in the henhouse, literally.
John Grillo (Edgewater,MD)
Well Republican women, how do you like this prospective appointment?
ThoughtfulAttorney (Somewhere Nice )
They will vote for Trump again. Do not be fooled. Over 52% of White women voted for an admitted sexual predator, Trump. No need thinking they regret their decision. "They" have the same tribal fear and White Supremacist views as their husbands. They are no swing anything. They swung us into the choke hold of our future dictator.
Journeywoman (USA)
Wow. Just wow. Can’t find other words right now.
Mary c. Schuhl (Schwenksville, PA)
Roger Ailes’ buddy as White House Communications Director? Sure, and while you’re at it, why not make Sean Hannity head of Homeland Security? Pretty soon there won’t be any “old boys” at all left in the clubhouse. Sad!
jeff (nv)
Another day in the Twilight Zone...
Edward Devinney (Delanco, NJ)
I predict we'll hear: "Mr. Shine was treated very, very unfairly by the media".... by YKW (You Know Who).
John Lusk (Danbury,Connecticut)
This is the best Trump can do? Or more likely no one else wants the job working fopr such a despicable person
Lou (Agosta)
Based on the headline, it sounds like he will fit right in.
rn (nyc)
A new face with hopefully a better functioning brain... however I doubt it, a FOX channel graduate - says a lot or nothing.... dont expect any thing good from this potus and his band of misfits !
Sherry Moser steiker (centennial, colorado)
Another fox news employee in the White House? Soon the tv station will move there. It will be 24 hr news from WH.
MB (MN)
Friends don't let friends work for this White House
R4L (NY)
How appropriate for this administration? Why not Harvey Weinstein?
XXX (Somewhere in the U.S.A.)
Not Harvey. You have to be a sexual harasser AND a Republican. Harvey is only a sexual harasser. He is not fully qualified for the position.
Gail Shufrin (Northampton, MA)
Haven’t hit bottom yet.
Tortuga (Headwall, CO)
Serial sexual harasser meets serial sexual harasser and offers him a job. This part of our nation's history can not close out soon enough!
Bruce A (Brooklyn)
Even the Mooch would be an improvement over this guy. Is it too late to bring him back?
Bob (New York State)
Ah, the final melding of State Fox News and the White House. Putin will be proud!
Berkeley Bee (San Francisco, CA)
Brilliant. Only hiring the very best. Oh, yeah.
Glenn (Cary, NC)
Honest to God, you really can't make this stuff up.
Pedro (Arlington VA)
Can't the Mooch come back for another 10-day whirlwind?
Disgusted with both parties (Chadds Ford, PA)
It is absolutely amazing how Trump has the aptitude to pick the unquestionably worst people for each position he fills. There are no guiding principles. There is no strategy other than chaos to destroy anything that preceded him. A false news king to be director of communications is one more blow to "truth", whatever that is in Trumptopia. If Al Capone were still alive, he would probably be picked to head the FBI. I feel like I am living in a real world Dali painting. How bizarre things have become only underlines what life in like in a country ruled by a megalomaniac. What is really frightening is that this happens so often daily now that it has become the new normal. If you are not feeling fear for our country now, you had better educate yourselves to the history leading up to the rise of Hitler and Mussolini.
Joachim (Réunion)
Sadly, might still be the lesser of two evils if it avoids us Schlapp.
Father Time (The Milky Way)
Water seeks its own level. In other words, misogynists reign supreme in Comrade Trump's sorry excuse for an "Administration."
Jim (Milwaukee)
What's your name again? Shine. Bill Shine. You will stand in the doorway doing photo shoots right? Oh yes. Or close to the curtains? Yes. Can you draw well? I'm a picture person. Of course. No documents to read? I'm visual. Sure. Sounds like you know a lot about Camonication. Communication Sir? That's what I said. Whatever you say Mr. President. Welcome aboard Bill. Now stand by the curtain.
Peter (Canada)
Right-wing propagandist and sexual harasser. Perfect fit for Trump’s White House. What could possibly go wrong?
A Nobody (Nowhere)
We need a conniving, middle-aged misogynist who's also a shameless propagandist for hire. Hmmmm. Now where can we find such a person?...
Bethesdalady (Maryland)
Fox reject known for sexual harassment moves to W Houses. But of course! It takes one to know one.
rick (manhattan)
Can Jeanine Pirro to replace Anthony Kennedy be far behind?
Samp426 (Sarasota Fl)
Oh, this will work out well. A known predator defender and a widely-known predator. What could possibly go wrong? Sounds like a perfect marriage to me. Beavis and Butthead, together agin. Marvy.
RLR (Florida)
Obviously a perfect fit for the White House swamp.
Sue (Midwest)
Trump is easily distracted by shiny things so it might be a good fit. I wonder if Shine will make the Chief of Staff even less relevant than he is now. Trump is like a horse who needs a stablemate, e.g., a donkey, to moderate his moods like Hopie did. This might be interesting.
PeterLaw (Ft. Lauderdale)
As the enabler and protector of a serial sexual predator, Mr. Shine would seem to be a great fit for our Boy President; an excellent choice!
Malby (WA)
Will he be steaming Trump's trousers while he's wearing them, like young Hope did?
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
Joseph Goebbels wasn't available ?
Kevin C. (Oregon)
That role is already being played by Stephen Miller.
Bruce Rozenblit (Kansas City, MO)
He wasn't good enough for Fox, but he IS good enough for the White House. What's next? Trump will start hiring the people he pardons after they are convicted from the Mueller investigation?
Brian (NYC)
To be fair, nobody of any quality is willing to work for Trump at this point. It's like picking through the last sad bananas at the supermarket. Can't wait to see what happens after the next mass exodus from the SS Trumptanic.
Giskander (Grosse Pointe, Mich.)
Unfortunately, Trump can pardon people before they are convicted or even charged, and he has actually done so.
Vanreuter (Manhattan)
The downward spiral continues...
gdurt (Los Angeles CA)
Only the best people.
ubique (New York)
Congratulations to Rupert Murdoch on wholly acquiring the White House and it’s staff. Sneaky like a Fox!
Joe P. (Maryland)
Think about that. A Fox News reject is up for a White House job. Stunningly abysmal standards.
John H (NV)
Shine will fit in with the corporate culture at the White House. Can't think of a more appropriate person to step into the roll of White House Communications. His appointment sure send a loud and clear signal.
MHV (USA)
Oh boy, another 'good guy'. They all seem to have one thing in common.... just sayin'
Ted (Indiana)
This, sadly, is not surprising for this administration, where harassment of any kind is apparently rewarded in one way or another.
Oh (Please)
Kind of reminds me of Andy Coulson in the UK, another of Rupert Murdoch's tabloid henchmen. Sure seems like a pattern. Murdoch's minions becoming a spokes persons in a western democracy that he had undermined, through control of the political process by virtue of control of the media outlets, and absolutely no ethical restraint about the use and sale of FAKE news as a business model. Andy Coulson, who like Jared Kushner, also had trouble getting security clearance because he's not a serious candidate for high level public service, wound up going to prison over the phone hacking scandal - although in fairness that criminality did pre-date his service in government. Anyway, its good to have the FOX old programming team back together for the Whitehouse reality show. Ratings are bound to improve.
Eric (Brussels)
Yay! More misogyny and falsehoods from the White House! What a great day to be an American! All this winning!
Moira (UK)
Birds of a feather. SS is happy, she'll be able to get her propaganda skills brushed up.
JM (San Francisco, CA)
Perfect addition to Trump's cesspool. Watch out ladies.
NDanger (Napa Valley, CA)
How apropos.
Jim (Richmond, VA)
Forced out at Fox. But good enough for this White House. That tells you a lot about Trump and those who surround him.
T Duffy (Cambridge MA)
perfect fit for the Donald
Alan (CT)
A known enabler of a culture of sexual harassment is now in the white house as Communications director. What could go wrong? Everyday is another nail in the coffin of decency.
susheela8 (Fairbanks, AK)
Haha, what will SHS say about her new coworker? Will she be civil? Of course, but admonishes others who truly are civil.
BKLYNJ (Union County)
We'll need to dig it up before driving in another nail.
Andy (East And West Coasts)
Another Fox talking head and a failed one at that. Shocking that Don, who only likes 'winners,' would go for a guy that got fired. Guess he doesn't care much about sexual harassment. A shocker, right? Will the swamp ever get actual professionals again?
Tom (Reno)
"I only hire the best people".
Terry (Someplace Upstate NY)
Tom, That was "Last year"
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, Calif.)
I don't suppose this will make perpetually miffed Sarah a whit less sulking, sullen, angry, bitter, defensive, resentful, haughty, paranoid, condescending and wrong.
susheela8 (Fairbanks, AK)
A liar vs “wrong”.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, Calif.)
I see the two as allies, not antagonists.
Matthew (New Jersey)
She's just doing her job. Her daddy told her god called her to do it and "Trump" showed her a pot of gold. So give her a break.
Charles (Clifton, NJ)
This will be the Fox News presidency. I assume the Shine appointment would be advantageous to Trump because it continues Trump's relations with the Murdochs, Hannity, et. al. "Communications" in this presidency is a wild ride. I hope Shine bakes good cookies.
S B (Ventura)
It is really disappointing to see the level of propaganda that flows out of Fox, and even more disappointing to see how many people are willing to buy into the Fox propaganda without checking facts or understanding the issues. Most trump supporters know that Fox produces propaganda - they just WANT to believe that it's true, and so they do. It is much easier to buy into the propaganda than to understand issues and look at the facts. This is not how a democracy thrives; this is how a democracy fails.

We have a president who evidently needs to antagonize people. I cannot imagine such a personality, but there we have him.

I heard someone call what you describe as "vice-signaling," in opposition to the "virtue-signaling" of progressives. Sounds like typical juvenile male behavior to me, but supposedly there are many Trump supporters who admire this antagonistic behavior. There is political capital in making liberals unhappy now (and they have lots).

"'Mr. Shine, who was forced out as co-president at Fox News last May for his handling of sexual harassment scandals at the network, has met with President Trump in recent weeks about taking the West Wing communications job, which has been vacant since Hope Hicks left the job in March.'" So let me get this straight: Fox News didn't want this guy, but "stable genius" Trump does? I guess this just goes to show that in Trump's world, association with sexual harassment scandals doesn't exactly have a negative impact on how he views one's resume and employment potential. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Trump thinks this guy has what it takes to be White House communications director. Probably the only thing Trump saw was the name "Fox News" on Shine's resume and the rest was history. What I'm really curious about, though, is how long Shine will last in the chaotic pressure cooker that is today's White House, provided he accepts the job. No one lasts long in Trump's administration, and when one of them makes an inevitable exit, Trump's usual response is to throw them under the bus before trashing them on Twitter. Shine would do well to avoid that snake pit, but "the best people" with whom Trump fills his administration apparently don't know a con when they see it.

He's well known among those who count, including Hannity and Conway, understands loyalty, has decades of experience dealing with the media and appreciates the people who vote for Trump. Mishandling sexual harassment allegations don't count as a scandal anymore, at least among Republicans. On the contrary, it may even give him a certain edge, in the vice-signaling world of Trump and his adoring supporters.

One utterly corrupt misogynist hires another utterly corrupt misogynist. What else is new in the Trump administration?
