We need to make sure this vile killer never sees the light of day, as it's doubtful Sessions will allow the death penalty for someone whose group of neo-Nazis supported Trump so fervently. Trump has defended them because they are his base. He enjoyed the loyal support of David Duke during this time and is just side of being a Grand Wizard himself. It's appalling and reprehensible. I'm not over-selling this either. He defended the racist, white nationalist, Nazi protesters with all he had, likely at the suggestion of the disgusting creep, Steve Bannon.
Blackcat66 (NJ)
Never forget why these disgusting white supremacists were marching in the first place as some of them bragged it was to celebrate Donald J Trump. These are his people. These are Trump supporters.
follow the money (Litchfield County, Ct.)
3 Possibilities: 1. Execution 2. LWOP at the ADMax in Florence, Colo. 3. LWOP at Gitmo, in the General Population there (Gen Pop). Problem Solved.
BA (Milwaukee)
So what? Trump will just pardon him.
Alex (West Palm Beach)
No excuses for this guy, please.
Jess (CT)
and according to Trump..what does the US should do to terrorists? I'm sure his base will cheer him up!
Son Of Liberty (nyc)
Another one of Trump's "fine people" but more importantly these are the people that are the soul of the GOP. We really as a nation have to accept that this is who and what they are.
AM (New Hampshire)
Perhaps there's no real surprise regarding the federal "hate crime" prosecutions. As federal (rather than state) charges, they allow for the possibility of a presidential pardon.
ChristineMcM (Massachusetts)
“I would recommend you take a good look in the mirror & remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists,” Mr. Duke wrote on Twitter." How ironic that it's Sessions to be the one to fight hate crimes, while his president exploits them. It's another split-screen moment in America where Donald Trump's affinity for and encouragement of white supremacy is at odds with his beleagured AG's efforts to prosecute its hateful byproducts. It's scary to think we may see Charlottesvile redux, just when we thought it was finally out of sight. I often wonder if Trump's left hand knows what his right is doing.
PWR (Malverne)
Using a motor vehicle as a deadly weapon is a crime of such viciousness, regardless of the motive, that it calls for the death penalty.
philip bacon (new york)
Trump said he was running for president to give a voice to those in america who had been long overlooked and ignored . well, we've heard you now. and we are horrified
Alan Einstoss (Pittsburgh PA)
The original reports stated that when leaving in the vehicle he got stopped in the pedestrian traffic and there were protestors with sticks and such improvised weapons. Obviously fearing for his own welfare and in a panic he gunned the vehicle hoping to get through. there were no reports of the driver intending to run people down or terrorism . Which ever way ,there's certainly nothing benevolent or innocent about the incident.Leave the statues if you must as to not incite violence and protest.
sob (boston)
The driver will get 5 years max. Can't understand how the cops could have let this happen. Worse policing I have ever seen. How hard is it to keep cars away from where the pedestrians are protesting. Just a tragedy, to have a death for something so meaningless. What a waste, very sad.
James S Kennedy (PNW)
Far right religious fundamentalists have found their messiah in trump. Racism is their creed. This will not end well. Trump, with his next pick, will have a solid majority on the Supreme Court. I expect the re-criminalization of abortion and a major effort to turn our secular nation into a theocracy. As forecast, they will wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. Count on it.
Jim L (Seattle)
When's the pardon? And why is the Session's org prosecuting? Shouldn't they be handing out medals?
Aaron (Seattle)
Inspired by Donald Trump. One of those fine people. Get used to it this is what America at the hands of Trump is becoming. Now with the Supreme court tilted to the right, things are going to get really dark..
michjas (phoenix)
This one is a little hinky. The law states that Mr. Fields has to have attempted to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin of any person— Mr. Fields intended to cause injury to "any person" because of race. But the person who he actually harmed was white, just like him. The prosecutor is going to have to explain how a white person kills another white person because he's a racist.
david (ny)
Convict him of first degree murder and sentence him to life without parole.
Canuckistani (Toronto)
This is one of those fine people on Trump's side.
SolarCat (Up Here)
Trump's new martyr, and "very fine person."
Ken (Houston)
I'm glad that Mr. Sessions charged the loser for killing Ms. Heyer, but we he ever enforce Civil rights laws? I seriously doubt that.
Paula (La,ca)
He will be pardoned.
Jan (Milwaukee)
trump invited this individual to feel such pure, unnuanced rage. He did the same thing for Dylan Roof in South Carolina. Dylan Roof used terms that were direct quotes from trump such as, “raping our women and killing people.” A skilled lawyer in both of these cases, should pretty easily be able to show the kind of influence a world leader has on the lonely and scared. Words matter. A president should make the less successful and privileged members of society feel confidence and hope; it’s part of the awesome responsibility of the job. This angry young guy will double down and say “liberals” and “feminazis” and “Muslims” and “elitists” are ruining this county and taking his job, because that’s exactly what ryan and trump and mcconnell have told him- over and over and over again. Words matter.
M (USA)
He'll get a presidential pardon and a job at the WH. Clearly he's "one of the fine people" in VA that day.
Gene (Charlottesville, Va)
Good news. Why did it take almost a year?
Mr. Grieves (Nod)
That was my first question! I can’t fathom a reasonable justification.
Tom Garlock (Holly Springs, NC)
The next Trump pardon.
Zydeco Girl (Boulder)
What is his potential sentence?
Dry Socket (Illinois)
This guy will be walking to the "Compound" in weeks... No problem. He's a true Trump Patriot. A lifetime supply of MAGA hats for this boy.
PAN (NC)
Didn't trump promise to pay the legal fees of those who mow down his opponents with a vehicle? Or was that just for those who punched out his opponents at his rallies of hate? Interesting how trump and his white supremacist terrorists are never mentioned by trump when he brings up MS-13 that he lumps in with babies and toddlers. James A. Fields Jr. is a terrorist and should be treated as such. He is no different than terrorists from other nations who murdered as many innocent civilians with a vehicle as they could.
Oceanviewer (Orange County, CA)
Trump, whose own father was once arrested at a NYC KKK rally, is probably thinking, "He could be my son!" A pardon will probably follow if there is a conviction.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
A prime example of Trumps " fine people ". Disgusting. LOCK HIM UP - FOR LIFE. Seriously.
Elliot Mantle (London, UK)
Trump will probably pardon him! This was not a hate crime, what occurred in Charlottesville was terrorist attack.
SR (Bronx, NY)
No. An act of war.
Rob (western MA)
Don't be surprised when Trump pardons him
philip bacon (new york)
Trump will just pardon him
OC (Wash DC)
There were NOT some"very fine" people in Charlottesville among the nazis & KKK etc that showed up to get their reprehensible white supremacy garbage on the news. The only kind of person who would take this aspect is either very ignorant or sympathetic to white supremacy - or both.
PAN (NC)
"a president who has refused to this day to unequivocally denounce the white supremacists" or Putin, for that matter. Trump's base is NOT all of America and only a minority of Americans! However, all supremacists neo-Nazis of America are a part of the trump base. And Hillary had the temerity to call them deplorable - how nice.
Sara G. (New York)
One piece of good news amidst horrible news of Kennedy's retirement, union ruling, crisis pregnancy center ruling and Muslim ban (all of this in the span of 2 short days). I guess it won't last long as the Groper/Liar-in-Chief will likely pardon him too. Maybe he'll even get a White House invite.
Mel Nunes (New Hampshire)
Pathetic, that portrait of racists. The guys in white, I guess. Just in case we couldn't tell that they were -- well -- white.
Robert Coane (Finally Full Canadian)
Indict Trump. Minions are worthless
PAN (NC)
I agree Robert. Unfortunately with the SCOTUS to be in the iron fist of trumplicans we will no longer even be able to impeach him, regardless of what Mueller turns up. Forget resistance. It is time to defy these people.
silver vibes (Virginia)
I’ll bet that AG Jeff Sessions gagged on his forced statement condemning this hate crime by James Field, a “very fine” person, according to the president. Somebody twisted the AG's arm to get him to publicly denounce this white nationalist and it’s certain that the president will frown upon Sessions’ false concern for the loss of an innocent life and multiple injuries caused by this very nice person.
John (Florida)
Good. Only problem is that once convicted Trump will probably pardon him. Make America Hate Again.
Stephen (Oakland)
Trump doesn’t have to edit for conviction to pardon. He will just wait for the right time to distract.
Donna Gray (Louisa, Va)
Let's be clear. The racist anti-Semites from the Klan and Nazi party are horrible people. Mr. Fields deserves the death penalty for his murderous act. However, the American way to confront their hateful speech is to expose their stupid ideas with more speech and ridicule, not violence! After their Skokie march the American Nazis were exposed as merely a few hundred nut cases! Instead, in Charlottesville (20 miles from me) the extreme left donned masked and grabbed weapons and chose to physically fight it out with the haters from the right! That gave them the publicity they wanted! They should have been ignored so they would have crawled back into their holes. Now we have the far left and far right anxious to fight on the streets! That is nuts! Allow peaceful free expression but not violence! It will be up to the police to keep them apart!
SMK NC (Charlotte, NC)
Ordinarily I’d agree that greater exposure and ridicule might better serve the cause than reciprocated violence. However, opponents to these neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups should not have to fear for their lives during a counter protest. Turn the other cheek? Sorry, self defense is justified under the circumstances. These groups are only powerful when they think they have the upper hand. There’s plenty of evidence that they cave in and whine and cry when the tables are turned. Look at the recent arrest in the UK of a guy giving the Nazi salute. Was bawling when the police handcuffed him, not even doing so roughly. If these clowns want to quote the bible, let them deal with the old standby - an eye for an eye. I for one am exhausted listening to their offensive language and actions, occasionally followed by insincere “apologies.” They deserve as good as they give.
Dubious (the aether)
That's a weird view of the event. My impression is that the white nationalists came armed and organized into trained military-style units. They planned to create violence, and their leaders, including Mr. Tubbs of the LOS, are on film giving them specific orders to leave the park that was the site of the rally and attack opposition demonstrators on Market. They went out of their way to create violence. The counter-protestors near the park, in contrast, were ragtag shouters. A lot of them were regular Charlottesville folks who were appalled by the white nationalist rally. I never got the impression that they were "extreme" leftists at all. Some had helmets and chemical sprays, but they were not a uniformed, disciplined fighting force. And the counter-protesters who were attacked by Fields were several blocks away from the park. Violence and hate crimes are not the fault of those who exercise their right to protest in opposition to... actual Nazis.
Stephen (Oakland)
Another example of blaming the victim.
R.P. (Bridgewater, NJ)
Article seems to deny that there were Antifa counter-protesters also engaging in violence at the rally, which is what Trump observed. It is acknowledged that white supremacists are bad people and were solely responsible for the girl's death, but why do we have to deny the reality that armed Antifa counter-protesters showed up and fought with the supremacists? It's also a fact that there were protesters there who were favor of keeping the statutes who were not part of the white supremacist marchers.
Jared (Boston, MA)
That’s really cool that there were totally normal people just really into statuary that felt comfortable marching alongside armed Nazis because they care so much about monuments and totally aren’t at all white supremacists.
Malone (Tucson, AZ)
In which case Trump's response should have been ``There were bad people on both sides'', - not what he actually said instead.
Dubious (the aether)
What do violent counter-protesters have to do with this vehicle attack, which occurred several blocks from the park where the Nazis were rallying? You seem to think that there was generalized chaos caused by both sides when Fields drove away from the park and found a peaceful protest march where he could commit murder. That's not the case.
dolly patterson (Silicon Valley)
God forbid Trump should pardon Mr. Fields, although nothing Mr. Trump does surprises me anymore.
alan (staten island, ny)
Trump should be tried for inciting the incident that led to this tragedy.
Carol (Lafayette IN)
Well, at least something has gone right this week. I hope he spends a long time in prison.
Nova yos Galan (California)
He might receive the death penalty.
Njlatelifemom (Njregion)
One of the very fine people Donald cited in his Trump Tower tantrum about Charlottesville. I just waiting for Donald to pardon him.
Richard Janssen (Schleswig-Holstein)
And Dylan Roof while he’s at it, a true soldier of the New American Order.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
There were some "very fine people" on both sides of Charlottesville's white supremacy celebration. Remember that on November 6 2018 and flush the Trump Toilet.
Satire & Sarcasm (Maryland)
"Today’s indictment should send a clear message to every would-be criminal in America that we aggressively prosecute violent crimes of hate that threaten the core principles of our nation." Considering that Sessions is a pro-Confederate statue person, I'm surprised the charges were filed.
