Homes that Sold for Around $600,000

Maplewood has some nice areas but all of those NJ towns with proximity to NYC train hubs are saddled with insane property taxes that are only going to go up up up. Generous union contracts with 10 year retirement options have something to do with it, but it is not the whole story. Tons of tax dollars goes into the schools -- but doesnt always go your local schools. Other struggling schools in your county get a surprising amount of your property taxes.

Property taxes can only be described as "insane"; those unions and socialist democrats surely come at a prohibitive price.

Wow. Move to a flyover state and you can buy something like my house: 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 5,000+ sq ft of finished space and 700 sq ft of storage space, walkout finished lower level, 2 decks, 3 car attached garage, all sitting on a lake. $350,000 and taxes are $3600 per year.

But their are very few jobs paying over $200K, right?

But you have to live in a flyover state. The rule of thumb is you get what you pay for. Flyoverstate equates to poor or non existent public transportation, generally lower income, mostly right to work kind of state with poor labor laws, etc. I rather live in my small house in Brooklyn even if I can here my neighbors next door.

Why can't we ever see an article in The New Rich Times "Homes that Sold for $200,000 - $300,000" instead of over half a million or a million?
LexDad (Boston)
Because that price range in NYC is pretty non-existent.

Because those don’t exist in the New York Area?
MD Monroe (Hudson Valley)
They exist....come to Orange County, NY. North of Rockland, on the Jersey side. Good schools and rising, but not crazy Westchester-style taxes.

the taxes on the houses are absolutely insane $20,000+ per year?
Martha (Brooklyn)
No links to the listings? Is this a new policy?
Victoria (Millstone, NJ)
Yes. I miss the listing links too. Are they going jo be brought back?

Ugh. Glad I live on the Eastern Shore. I feel very sorry for folks who have to settle for this, AND, it;s part of the reason that our kids will never do as well as their parents did. Thanks, Republicans!
Pundit (Paris)
It wasn't Republicans who drove those taxes up so high. From a Parisian perspective, the cost per square foot is quite reasonable on all of these. The taxes/maintenance, however, are insane!
MD Monroe (Hudson Valley)
Republicans? These are blue states. No wonder people are leaving in droves. My next door neighbor, young, just moved to Texas. She will not be coming back.
Karen b (NYC)
Please! Texas. I have heard it so many times. McMansion for what you would pay for a studio in Manhattan. My in laws live there and I admit that the nature is beautiful there. But not for a million bucks would I ever move there. Football, trucks and culturally it’s just dull outside the cities.
