White Extinction Anxiety

Buchanan et al need to get over themselves. By the time minority majority arrives, they will lying pushing up daisies to welcome the sun and morning dew.

Just a matter of waiting them out. They are a dying breed, literally and figuratively.

This is the kind of race baiting article that plays perfectly into the hands of Trump and the far right movement in America. It is very dangerous stuff indeed. First things first. A lot of Latinos, especially second generation ones in America, identify as White. So you have to be less euphoric about the numbers being on your side. A lot of Asians vote Republican. You have to be less arrogant about your assumptions. To be white is not a privilege for the countless working class people who live hard lives. You have to be more compassionate. And there are more than enough white people in this country to cause a heck of a lot of unnecessary trouble should people indulge in racial politics. No. Much better to drop this arrogance and treat all Americans as Americans without bringing skin color into it. Meanwhile, congratulate yourself. You have made it that much more likely that Trump will win the White House again.
Sandy (Florida)
Wow-Pat Buchanan? What, was Bob Dornan otherwise occupied? If these two are representative of the white race [and I think they are, given that Trump is our president], then perhaps extinction is the best thing that can happen to us.
James (LA)
The fear and loathing that Trump's white America directs towards immigrants is just another con from the world's leading con man. What's really happening is the shaping of financial gulags for all poor and middle class; white, black, and brown. Greed is the enemy, curse it and all that worship it no matter what color they are.
Thinker (Akron)
This article is insinuating that it's inherently wrong if Whites protect their own self interests. Why is this the case? Shouldn't they be able to?
John Taylor (San Pedro, CA)
My mother changed her name, and moved from New York City to Los Angeles, to escape anti-Semitism. Pat Buchanan probably has a similar story in his family; someone who came to America, or moved across America, to escape some sort of bigotry. "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"
Memma (New York)
It is no surprise to Blacks in this country that there is a broad swatch of white Americans who are racist. Some sleep at night by deluding themselves that they are not, but whose actions tell a different story. Then there are others, like the guy in the White House ,who revels in his white supremacy. The surprise is that there are fair-minded, ethical White Americans who acknowledge their inherited white skin privilege, but strive to support equality. Otherwise, this country for people of color, would be unlivable

"White Extinction Anxiety" Another ridiculous component of the "White Supremacy Everywhere Despite The Obvious Absurdity of the Assertion" that sounds good (i.e., it "fits") in the context of the left's steady stream of concocted narratives that require zero thought. Which, I guess, is just the point.

I couldn’t agree with Mr. Buchanan more.
David (California)
The American Constitution quite clearly gives the Congress, not the President, responsibility for "naturalization" and immigration issues. Many Americans are skeptical of excessive Presidential power and they are quite correctly jealous of losing their power in the Congress. Enough Americans were upset about Obama's executive orders on immigration. which were an end run around the power of the Congress, to throw the election to Trump in 2016. (The Germans made a big mistake in giving all the power to one person in 1933). Polarizing every single issue into white people versus non white people is not faithful to the truth, and is profoundly subversive of American democracy. While every issue may look like white versus black to Blow, that is not true for most of us. Obama of course was elected with millions of white votes.
Jane (Washington, DC)
I'm just imagining if, indeed, being "American" is being white than are "whiter" people more patriotic than beige, or people with freckles? Where does this end? There are Western values: scientific inquiry, a just and free society, a government for the people not profit, separation of church and state.... I'd like to think my courage, compassion, creativity, humor, and intellect make me American. These people are cowards not Americans.
JMcF (Philadelphia)
I’ve found that most of the people who comment on the supposed hellhole that Europe has become because of immigration have never (or hardly ever) been there. Or if they have they must have an irrational fear of taxi drivers, hotel maids, and waiters.
Christina (New York, New York)
Our country WAS founded on genocidal policies of white colonialism based on the English's imperialist policies. Look at the horror we inflicted on Native Americans and to this day it continues! White supremacy is at the root of our Constitution. We have been told a myth about U.S. history. The question we should be asking is if we want to change as a nation, not what we once were.
Phil Levitt (West Palm Beach)
We didn't need the approaching demographic reversal to nurture hate in this country. The KKK surely antedated that along with the despising of each immigrant group or aspiring immigrant group that wasn't white and Protestant. The Chinese and the Jews have been kept out and Muslims are a target for exclusion now. The Irish and Italians have been despised. Those are just the ones that come to mind, so I apologize to any who I have left out. So I say, "What else is new?"
Tom Beeler (Wolfeboro NH)
This decline in white America is the fruit of decades of mindless Calvinism. Stagnant and declining wages, lack of daycare in a world where both parents have to work because they are being underpaid, and an unending simultaneous attack on birth control and abortion have all diminished family size and the affordability of having babies. These impediments to reproduction have been obvious for years and for years white Republicans have callously ignored them. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. This is a self-inflicted wound, or, to use Buchanan's words, "ethnomasochism" at its worst.
gnowzstxela (nj)
Perhaps some reassurance to whites is in order: The last time this happened, WASPs were joined in their societal dominance by Southern and Eastern Europeans, Catholics, and Jews. And the only thing that happened to WASPs is that they (and everyone else) got richer in multiple ways because of the diversity, talent, and energy of the newcomers. If you can make your society just a little more equal, you can have that payoff again, even greater. Fix the equality problem, and you can have a flowering of opportunity and prosperity. Don't fix it, and everyone turns on each other and you get Europe in the 30s.
DFS (Silver Spring MD)
Buchannan would be a good fit for a role as one of the bullies in Gangs of New York. Irish immigrants were demeaned as inferior because of their lineage and religion. Irish gangs were more dangerous to society then than M-13 today. A flaming hawk during Vietnam, he was 4F although he had several fist fights According to the Washington Post: Few politicians have written an autobiography filled with tales of fistfights, including one with the Washington police that got him suspended from Georgetown and convicted of a misdemeanor. Fewer still would boast, as Buchanan did, that he had many more fights than appear in the book. He was quoted: [Hitler}was also an individual of great courage, a soldier's soldier in the Great War, a political organizer of the first rank, a leader steeped in the history of Europe, who possessed oratorical powers that could awe even those who despised him." https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1992/02/15/buchanans-pol...

As a white child born to privilege in a racist society, it has helped to redefine myself as a member of the "human race" as my special status declines. Voila! I fit right in!
DiaPat (Silver Spring )
When the minority becomes the majority, those two words, "majority" and "minority" to describe Americans that reinforce the "Have's" and the "Have Not's" should be eliminated. Maybe we can all just be called "Americans" finally and treated equally?!?
samantha (nyc)
Even if 'WHITE Supremacy' weren't just an unimaginably boring OXYMORON, we ALL descend from common AFRICAN ancestors, even Native Americans, who 'settled' here long before Europeans,(mostly Spanish) 'discovered Americas! AND, Diversity is KEY to species SURVIVAL, as is our ability to MIGRATE! This country was built by survivors of persecution, starvation, war and slavery. Even Native Americans CAME here for better life than where they were(mostly Asia, after Africa!). We've traced 4 generations of our family to 3 counties in N. Ireland. But my grandfather and ex-husband were as dark as Spanish pirates, b/c CLEARLY many early Irish were! I WISH 'White Supremacists' required genetic 'purity' testing, b/c NONE of them could 'pass' one..b/c NONE EXISTS!! Kids in my son's elementary school came from 13 countries! His girl friends' have looked like United Nations that's 3 blocks from us. The most beautiful people in the world have some interesting diversity, and less chance of passing on genetic mutations that cause notorious 'race' related illnesses. AND DON'T EVEN get me started on how boring the food is w/o diversity!Talk about creating a 'crisis' that's NOT! People like Pat Buchanan should be banned from talking...sorry...but some thing are just too stupid and horrible.
Dave (CA)
How do you think the Chinese would feel if in their lifetime China went to minority Chinese? How would say Nigeria feel if in their lifetime Africans were a minority? Saudis, Israelis, Japanese, Mexicans, etc. Nothing to worry about, don't worry if the basic fabric of your society is thrown in the blender, it wasn't anything to preserve.
JD (Austin)
If Mexico was predicting that in a few decades Mexicans would be less the 50% of the population of Mexico because of lower birth rates and the rise of Black and Asian immigration, would it really be surprising or worthy of ridicule if they expressed anger of fear over that and felt that somehow their demise was being orchestrated by the government? Would it really be because they must be racists who hate diversity? No, it's being normal. In Austin, TX, Hispanic activists attack White businesses that have moved into traditionally Hispanic areas, but it is celebrated for attacking gentrification and preserving the ethnic character of the area. That of course if fine and noble and certainly not driven by any racist attitudes. Or I suppose when traditionally Black neighborhoods in the LA area became majority Hispanic and Blacks were driven from those neighborhoods they were supposed to celebrate that as one of the beauties of diversity? Which race or ethnic group would cherish the idea of being replaced or becoming a minority in the country that wouldn't exist if not for them?
Heidi solanki (canada )
Unless white people and specifically middle class whites, are prepared to procreate at higher rates than they are in all "western countries" the demographics are going to shift to the non white population. As well the mass of white baby boomers are aging and will soon disappear. Their children are have children later, not at all, or intermarrying. We will become, in a few generations, a multiracial people. I see that inevitablity as progress.
Robert (Minneapolis)
I am sure Charles believes whites run most things in the country, and he may we’ll be correct. If whites are so worried about “extinction,” why in the world would they devise an immigration system where only about 10% of the immigrants are from Europe, and 90% are from other continents? He probably does not know this after reading his piece, but most immigrants to the U.S. come from south of the border and Asia (hint, the non white European areas of the world).
Joey (Connecticut)
More Neo-Confederate baloney. They lost the argument in the 1860s, and they're going to lose again.
James (Texas)
Almost makes me ashamed to be a white American. Of course these people would have to crawl back under the rock from where they came if only Americans will vote. Sadly, I don't think they will. However, I'm happy to be wrong.
Pat Hines (Upcountry South Carolina)
There is no crisis on the southern border, except the wall has been delayed. This country was created for and by whites. All others are here at our leisure. We should stop that tolerance because it's been misappropriated by ungrateful people.

This reminds me of something a great mind once said: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” - Yoda Could not have said it better myself!

My daughter, whose parents are white (northern European descent) and Chinese, has an African-American partner, a wise and gentle man. They have a baby who seems quite happy when he is not hungry, gassy, sleepy or need a diaper change. Mr. Buchanan, I don't think you have anything to fear from this baby. I don't think he came into the world to destroy white America. He enjoys being fussed over by both parents and both sets of grandparents. aunts and uncles, and doesn't seem to care much about the color of their skin. So please chill...
allen (san diego)
the suggestion that the anti immigrant administration is protecting and not destroying the character of the country is an exercise in self delusion. the immigrants coming to the country are looking for the democratic qualities that the trumpers are so intent on destroying. so it essentially comes down not to principles but to race. white people in the republican party just dont want to share the country with non-whites. its a simple and as clear as that. but the facts are that whites who are trying to keep out immigrants have become fat, lazy, incompetent, suicide prone, luddites who are using the power of the government to try and eek out one or two more generations before they become extinct.
Poway Mojo (Retired in San Diego)
And, all the Dems see is future Democratic voters, legal or otherwise.

people who have the same views as Buchanan in my opinion are afraid that they won't be able to compete in the game of life. Keep the others out so that whites have less completion for jobs, housing etc.

I knew this as soon as I heard Trump's cries during his rallies. Full disclosure, I'm white. Anxiety is rampant in my tribe but usually unspoken. Trump will be gone some day (sooner rather than later) but he will leave behind his legacy of racial hate which which his followers will try to perpetuate. The child prisons are a Nazi relic. Holocaust historians note that children were to be killed because they would continue to carry on Jewish culture, lifestyles etc. OK Trump is not advocating murder but do we know if this is being belief. His election was.

Aw, I feel so sorry for those poor white people. Funny though, the white lady I see in the mirror everyday doesn't seem too upset. We need to evolve. We cannot sustain much longer without somehow losing some of those primitive fears.
Litote (Fullerton, CA)
Buchanan and his ilk, regardless of color, could become extinct and America would be better for it.
Been There (U.S. Courts)
Tens of millions of Republicans with "white extinction anxiety are so eager to preserve their unearned privileges that they are willing destroy America's traditional pluralistic constitutional democracy and replace it with a white-supremacist Russian-stye authoritarian kleptocracy. Decent people loyal to the U.S. Constitution are in an existential war against anti-American Republicans. Either real Americans vanquish all Republicans traitors, or we forfeit our democracy and human decency. This November probably will decide the fate of the nation.

Contrary to Buchannan’s beliefs, western ideology is NOT – and never was – the ideology of skin colorism, which is what the racism & arguments of people like Buchanan really boil down to. The “ideology of Western suicide” he speaks of is the ideology he now espouses: the abortion of Western ideals, especially America’s and its Declaration of Independence. Our Declaration is perfectly clear that its principles are universally applicable to ALL people, full stop, if those principles are given a fair chance to compete in the market place of human aspirations. A fair chance to compete was not the case in 1776 (hence the need to go to war to earn it). Nor was it the case in most of the world up until the end of WW2 (hence the need to go to war to preserve it). Today, the ideals of the Declaration are still a work in progress that Buchannan wants us to believe should now be converted to a work in regress, for reasons wholly antithetical to the Declaration. So, let him stand before the American people this Fourth of July and, with cups of Jim Jones spiked Kool-Aid in hand and declare the founding principles of our nation, which truly make America great and a shining example to all, null & void because he’s freaked-out by looking to his left & right and seeing too many people with darker skins around him --- people who aspire, as he used to, in the Declaration of Independence and the principles for which it stands: One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty & Justice for All.

Every group in the world has an existential fear of its own demise. Whites, blacks, hispanics, Jews, purple people, etc. included. And by the way, people who hold off on having children until they are capable of supporting them financially and emotionally should be commended for not placing an additional burden on society.
Bill Lombard (Brooklyn)
More identity politics , this is all you have ?, no other platforms .... tsk tsk , see you at the landslide in 2020
Carl Ian Schwartz (Paterson, NJ)
The title is the message of today's GOP under Tramp: Make America White Again. And I have hot news for them: you can't stop history, even with genocide.
John Hunniades (Hungary )
Africa for the Africans. Asia for the Asians. Arabia for the Arabs, Latin America for Hispanics but of course Europe and historically white countries for everyone. Every nation has a right to preserve its ethnic and cultural identity except for European ones because as well know Western Culture is just an idea and has nothing to do with its historic people because white identity is just an invention though people being white is clearly a huge problem that we must overcome. This is the cognitive dissonance we are dealing with. All of you white liberals are astonishingly stupid and naive to think you will be safe in a future society dominated by non whites or that it would conform to your silly, utopian fantasy. These groups will simply Balkanize and vote their self interest based on ethnicity which is already the case with their disproportionate support for left wing parties. Even more galling is that most of the boutique socialists commenting here are unaffected by these changes and so while they live in overwhelmingly white communities and send their children to private schools it's working class whites who deal with the consequences of their insanity in the form of displacement, crime, wage stagnation and inflation. But reasonable people will simply not put up with this nonsense anymore. We have a right to exist, we have a right to preserve our identity. And this corrupt, Neo-Liberal world order will be relegated to the rubbish bin of history where it belongs.
Shmoo (Bali)
That is, you are assuming that every other non white ethnicities will be as selfish as you. Speak for your self, never for others.
JB (Mo)
The chances of most of the old white guys I know impregnating anything are essentially nil. And, most of their children vote democratic, ha! So, get out of the way if you can't lend a hand, for the times they are a'changing...Bob Somebody wrote that last part.
Dana (Bloomington IN)
What Mr. Buchanan is too racist to figure out is that many of us do not choose "our people" by the concentration of melanin in their skin, but by character, affinity, and shared interests. Radical concept, I know. And there is no "Western culture." England, Wales, and Scotland share the same modest-sized island and consider themselves three cultures. France is not Germany is not Switzerland is not Italy. "Western culture" is a dog whistle meaning "white." He's just terrified that when white people are no longer a majority, others may treat us the way we have historically treated them.
Ray. Moss (Sydney)
This truth “is self evident” and the process can be productive and smooth with a result that can assure the United States and it’s founding concepts “all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights”. I don’t believe those rights end at man made borders. So when the world recognises this there should be no need. For worry or ethnic fear. The problem only manifests itself if we don’t follow through.
texsun (usa)
It has been argued by others and as a late bloomer I now believe Trump was part of a backlash from the election of Obama. A segment of white america voted against their own economic interest for years but in particular with G.W. His elixir of tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation spurred the 2008-2009 economic meltdown. Who got hurt most by the effects of the depression? Low middle and lower white American wage earners lost homes, cars, credit cards, jobs and health care. Banks got bailed out, paid huge fines, and recovered nicely. No banker went to jail. As further punishment they got a black president. Enter Donald Trump whose singular goal has been to dismantle, corrupt or abandon anything with Obama's name attached to it. Populism as racism permeates Trump's agenda. Obama consistently scapegoated as the source of problems Trump is forced to face down. The health crisis returns, opioid crisis continues, and wage stagnation ever present, as divide between rich and poor widens. Trump's number one issue, immigration. Put fear of the other at the top of list. Followed by trade just to round out the folly. And as always the fake news.
Sabre (Melbourne, FL)
As a white Vietnam veteran, I believe that if Trump and Buchanan represent the "greatness" of white America, then it is past time for whites to be in the minority. Fortunately, many whites are not the racists that we see with Trump and Buchanan so there is hope that we can change and take power back from these bigots.
Shawn Crisp (Orlando)
I would like to see the NYT stop publishing articles that assign derogatory characteristics to entire groups of people; regardless of the ethnicity of the author. I think the greater cause of concern among whites (blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc,) is the widening inequality gap, failure to invest in education and affordable healthcare, a respectable retirement for our senior citizens and our growing democracy gap. We're all Americans in the end and fellow human beings above that. Articles like this only spread division when we should all be working hand-in-hand to solve our challenges.
Tom (Deep in the heart of Texas)
So Buchanan thinks that the age of the white majority and its attendant culture is on the wane. This old southern white man understands what Buchanan is saying; I just don't understand the problem. If the apotheosis of Trumpism continues, I'm going to be the one needing a morphine drip.
Sudha Nair (Fremont, Ca)
Pat Buchanan is one of vanishing, intolerant, white males. Thank goodness! The world is changing for sure. Populations are mixing and melding into new shades and colors. This is not new or abnormal, but, is part of the evolution of human race. To be afraid of people who look different from you is to fear the present and the future! What is disheartening just right now is that there is so much fear that it explodes in very ugly events, exposing the meanness of Buchanan and others while victimizing the helpless!
Michael Greason (Toronto)
I live in a City where white people are already heading rapidly to minority status. It is not a concern for me or for many, if any, of my fellow citizens. My great pride in and love of Toronto is that we have largely reached a stage where no one "notices" ethnic origin. People are just people and we treat them as such. Religion is a personal discussion between an individual and his or her belief in a God. It is very difficult for me to understand why any true believer would be at all fussed about what any of their neighbours believe if he or she is true to their faith and him/herself.. While the US is lagging somewhat in this trend, the increasing tendency for white "Christians" is to find themselves as a small minority - amongst their white secular neighbours. While Quebec, a few years ago, had 90% church attendance, it is now less than 10%. This in a society where outside of Montreal, there is little immigration. I read the US press with some incredulity. People who claim to be "Christians" seem to be hopelessly missing the central point. Love your neighbour, treat others as you wish to be treated and even love God (the symbol for the rightness of the above) as you love yourself would all preclude any support whatsoever for the pursuit of a white ethnic state or even worse cruelty at the border. While I am no longer religious - what drives my view on life is the fact that these wonderful concepts were introduced to me in my formative years.
Michael B (Melbourne, Australia)
Mr Blow and Mr Buchanan are two sides of the same coin, they both conflate immigration control with color. This may be the case in the US, but it is not the case, as Mr Blow suggests, in Europe. This is another case of US cultural blindness that imagines the rest of the world is like Manhattan. The US and Australia are different to Europe, Europe is not a settler/immigrant society. Why should Norway not stay culturally Norewegian? Why shouldn't Hungary stay culturally Hungarian? Because the US is a settler/immigrant society so the rest of the planet has to march to an America drum beat and become settler/immigrant societies too? Why should they have to become immigrant societies like the US or Australia? Australia has a had a color blind immigration policy for almost 50 years, coupled with a strict border control policy that underpins high rates of color blind skill based immigration, almost half a million per year. To suggest that border controls are incompatible with high rates of color blind immigration is a fallacy. Look beyond America my friends.
sowatery (Oregon)
Difference is an incredibly creative medium, not something to be merely tolerated. we learn when we have opportunities to build relationships outside our cultural and social border walls. Learning to speak another language, listening to music from different cultures, traveling/exploring unfamiliar and new places brings more than just awareness; they bring curiosity, stimulate imagination, connect us to place and nature, and on and on. We are becoming imprisoned behind walls of bleak, dark sameness where there is nothing but fear and greed fueling those in power. The Trump and Buchanan rhetoric is literally genocidal, as they dehumanize and make all nonwhite people "less than." We MUST resist, every day, and not just with opinion, but right action.
Robert (Minneapolis)
It is so easy to throw stones. What system of immigration would you like to see, Mr. Blow? People overwhelmingly want to immigrate to the Northern lands that were largely, although not exclusively, built by whites. People generally want to come from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, from south of the border to Europe and the U.S. They want what is here, and to leave behind the misery that their own lands have brought them. Gallup estimates approximately three quarters of a billion people would like to leave their countries and immigrate. The U.S. is by far the most desired destination, according to Gallup. The U.S. has already taken 20% of the people world wide who have immigrated (approximately 43 million people live in the U.S. who were not born here.) I am quite OK with continued immigration in numbers similar to what we have been experiencing (approximately 1 million per year). But, there is something seriously wrong with the constant drumbeat by many who offer no solutions and just throw gas on the fire. I seriously doubt that there is anyone in the U.S. who would like to see all of the folks in the Gallup estimate come here. It would annihilate our environment. So, please offer some constructive ideas on a very difficult problem that the U.S. and Europe are struggling with. Both have chosen to not adopt the much of Asia model which is to just say no and are trying to figure it out.
Deb (Blue Ridge Mtns.)
So beige will become the new white. Good. Because we will have learned to love each other, respect each other and maybe stop fighting each other. Because as a species we're going to need each other in order to survive. If we don't get our collective heads together and focus on fighting for the life of the planet that sustains us we're eventually goners anyway. In the end it doesn't matter what color we were - skeletons all look the same.
Keith (Colorado)
Sorry, Pat, no "ethnomasochism" here. I just don't find my whiteness to be of any peculiar or unique value. Also, I can't help but notice that people who do think their whiteness matters tend to be making categorically worse decisions about nearly everything, from finance to the environment to the rule of law. I'd say my interest in a better world as a whole hast to take precedence over any interest in my so-called "race." That strikes me as rational and even self-interested, not "masochistic."
James Young (Seattle)
Buchanan is a dinosaur a relic of the past, a past that America has to get past, (unless whites want to have dished out to them what they've been so willing to dish out). Luckily, there are more non-racists than Trump racists, and they were put in their place in the 1960s. But we took our eyes off the prize, when we assumed that racism was in the past, left to the ash heap of history. But, you can't kill an idea, since the election of Trump, that much has been proven. until level the playing field, allow every citizen of this country access to education, healthcare, etc. Which is why America needs to have a real conversation about immigration, because according to Buchanan, it's the influx of immigrants that is the sole cause of their problems, lack of education, low paying jobs, etc. Except America doesn't accept as many immigrants as other nations do, so Buchanan's argument is untrue. What we need is real immigration reform, a path to citizenship, which is something both sides of the isle is guilty of. Using immigration as a political football, to score votes. I was in Puerto Vallarta, when Obama was voted into office the first time. Mexicans believed that they would treated fairly as Obama promised, but as I warned friends I have there, not to hold their breath, Obama like all elected officials, at the end of the day, he's still a politician.

anyone with a smattering of geography, history and cultural knowledge would know that "white people" have ALWAYS been a minority. (we all come from AFRICA BTW ) We are just a bit of the 7+ BILLION people on the planet and if they denigrate the other races and think them inferior, they have done it to themselves. In stead of slavery-run cotton plantations, those workers could have been free and earning a living and learning in school. Society would have been VERY different.just look what we have done to the Native American who in many ways is hardly farther along than 1865. And WHITE PEOPLE LIKE TRUMP will only make things worse.
Stovepipe Sam (Pluto)
English, Scottish, Dutch, French, German, Irish, Welch, Spanish ... there was "racism" in the beginning of this country, just as there was racism 100 years later and racism now. But it's not the "race" that's the problem. The problem is the "other" whether it is the other country of origin, the other language, custom, the other skin color, the other gender, the other sexual orientation, the other with the physical or mental deformity, the other opinion. There will always be too many human beings, who, seeing the world through a lens heavy with fear, are easily persuaded to use the differences of the other as a weapon to give them a perceived advantage. And in this climate of fear that's been drummed up, it's made all the more acceptable by demagogic opportunists like Trump. Fear of the other is what fuels Trump and Trump is what fuels the fear of the other. It's a terrible cycle. The way to break it is love. Refuse to fear. Refuse to hate the fearful. Be compassionate even in the face of hate. Underneath that hate and fear is pain and wounded people. At this stage, turning the other cheek is the best way to neutralize the Trump's of the world. Don't give the fearful the evidence they need to justify their fear. Don't let the Trumps of the world pull your strings. Pull your own strings, and tie them to the place in your heart where there is love.

Great piece. I agree entirely. I guess in ethnomasochistic for having no concerns that whites are heading fast toward a minority in the US.

My thoughts exactly ever since the voices of Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck, Ingraham, Bannon and the rest started spewing divisive hate-speak decades ago. They finally won, but, in the end, we lost America.

Wouldn't it be great if all of us, in our shared humanity and dependence on this earth focused on what the real looming problems are. Climate change. Mass extinctions. Healing all the trauma we've imposed on our home.

I always wished for an opportunity to tell Buchanan (or anyone of his ilk) that I was exactly the kind of white women his kind wished would reproduce. But I never did so because my adult years took place post-1980, and, thanks to the egregious fiscal policies begun by Reagan and now seeing their total triumph under Trump, I never felt it would be possible to afford a secure future that included children. Yes, Mr. B. It's you and your kind and the miserable policies you engender that prevent white women like me from having kids. Good job by your feckless crowd!

Over time people who leave Africa turn lighter skinned or white. So in the long run America will be all "white" anyway. I don't think white people have anything to worry about. I can understand why black supremacists would be concerned however.
iRarity (Nashville)
So, basically you're scared about the demographic changes? Gotcha. You do know that we all can read between the lines in your comment, right? "Over time people who leave Africa turn lighter skinned or white". HILARIOUS.
Kaye (Houston)
I see other races come in, but they have this exclusiveness about them. It's like you've traded one racist group for another.
Livonian (Los Angeles)
Perhaps the source of Pat Buchanan and Trump’s “white displacement anxiety” comes from reading endless columns about the end of white majority status, which in the hands of Charles Blow always reads more like a threat than a prediction.
Rich Ramirez (Sydney)
As per usual: right on, Me. Blow! I get so annoyed, not sad, that "white" America can't see the writing on the wall; we're all going to look alike some day, anyway! Whether they like it or not! Most of my "caucasian" friends married asians, hispanics, or west africans. And their children are beautiful! Or what about my vietnamese/ cambodian couple friends? We're all simply human after all! Small minded people are always creating big problems. This planet is so much bigger than their small world view. Please, "white" america: crawl back under your rock, and allow society to advance peacefully, as it will (whether you like it or not).
Charles Justice (Prince Rupert, BC)
What about the America of Frederick Douglas and Martin Luther King? Apparently people with different coloured skin are not part of the real America according to Buchanan. What is the difference between this and saying that Jews are not real Germans? Racism ultimately leads to "ethnic cleansing".
hoffmanje (Wyomissing, PA)
Guess it was OK to bring black people to America as slaves. Could someone please tell me what white people truly fear?
FREDERICK Vaquer (Beaverton, Or)
In my community it is not unusual to see mixed race couples with children. These usually appear to be Asians and whites or Latins and whites and much more rarely Blacks and whites. In my community this appears to be an increasing norm. I do not detect anxiety about this supposed elimination of whites or of elimination of Asians, Blacks, or Latins. I suppose the folk I deal with in Oregon just consider ourselves Americans who respect and enjoy their neighbors as individuals rather than members of a race.I wonder what country do you come from Mr. Blow????
Jacqueline (Colorado)
I'd never vote for Trump but yet I still cant buy into liberal identity politics. I never even considered myself as a white person until 2015. Liberals kept telling me that as a white I was irreversibly racist and wrong. See I always thought of myself as a transgender woman. Today though I'm a white-educated-atheist-queer-transgender woman. I've been so pigeonholed by liberals that there are only a few thousand people in my identity group in the whole country. When I unpack my handbag I can say I see no one that looks like me anywhere within 200 miles. Finally, I just dont like being my victimhood status. In order to have legit opinions in liberal land I have to be a victim. If I was still a white man I know that my only legit opinion would be guilt. As a transgender woman I can say anything I want and liberals listen to me. 99% of my friends are hard-core liberals and I hear horrible things from them. All whites deserve to die (even though 90% of my friends are white). Whites cant be good people. Whites are evil. Opiates are a good thing because we ignored the crack epidemic. What's crazy is that they say all these things and they never seem to see that as white people they are really saying they themselves are irredeemably evil. I've read a lot of comments on articles like these along the lines of "I cant wait to do to whites what they did to me." I surely hope thats not the future. If it is the future maybe blacks can feel better but i dont think that's progress.
Nicholas Cummins (Brooklyn)
I think a dismissive attitude like this furthers far-right attitudes. Wouldn't literally any group that was going extinct dislike said extinction? You would never, ever say "Palestinian extinction anxiety is irrational" or "Coptic Christian extinction anxiety is irrational." No group likes the idea of not existing. We need to understand this or we're going to end up with a lot more nazis.

Let them have their pathetic "ethno-state" in Idaho or Montana or whatever. Let these white nationalists move into their little containment area to LARP as survivalists and let the rest of us move on.
Jeff (Chicago, IL)
As a white man, I encourage one way white flight to parts unknown by those who share my skin color but do not share my humanity or my passionate embrace of those who don't look like me. Furthermore, I could not be bothered any less by the prospect of becoming a minority race. Seriously, "good" Christian, Pat Buchanan, is this what your perversion of Christianity compels you and your ilk to protest about?
JC (Atlanta)
America has a right to it's borders and "change is gonna come" demographically without having to allow illegal aliens to exacerbate the many shortages of healthcare & water in California. Lamar wins Pulitzer saying things that make Trump look adult. Both my black children became successful because I taught them not to blame others, particularly white people, for their challenges. Any culture in power is resistant to change. "The Black Panther" noted "if we let other cultures in, we lose ours." Buchanan is at least honest about his motives, unlike Blow. Those illegal children are pawns by liberals who don't cry for 8,000 black men killed by black men each year nor the many children in America separated from their fathers and parents by liberal policies. No liberal dares discuss "decision responsibility" and no one in the democratic party cares about a demographic that votes 90 percent for them each election. I told my children the best way to stay out of poverty was not not have children out of wedlock and don't get caught up in being victims or race baiters like Michael Eric Dyson. Watching Ferguson burn down over a thug who attacked a cop first (see Grand Jury testimony) shocked my children who almost believed Brown was wrongly shot. Blow would have shot him if he read the facts. At least I teach in at risk communities (one year three of my 7th graders were pregnant in St. Louis) and still do in Atlanta. How about crying and screaming over that Mr. Blowhard?

We should all stand behind the road to citizenship for new immigrants. All the things Buchanan worries about are taught to immigrants before they can become citizens. They often are more respectful of American traditions and the Constitution than the poor endangered white folks who don't seem to connect respect for others and the law to their own privilege. Their ancestors probably were more patriotic and informed about what makes America great than the Trump gang and their supporters. Welcome the new citizens and be glad they really want to be Americans, regardless of color, religion, etc. I worry more about the Trumpists who don't seem to care about what America stands for or represents. They think it stands for white power. Wrong.
Paul '52 (New York, NY)
Ironic, isn’t it, that neither of the two biggest proponents of this theory, Buchanan and Coulter, had children. Pat, Ann: what did you expect?
Melvyn Magree (Dulutn MN)
Poor Pat Buchanan! Do you think he will get much sympathy from those of Native American ancestry? I doubt there is anyone left on this continent all of whose ancestors were here before Columbus or the Vikings. There was lot of mixing both ways, willing and unwilling. My provable ancestors came from England, Germany, and Poland and as my name suggests from Ireland. But maybe not, many an Italian named Magri was in the census as Magree! And my extended family's ancestors are from around the globe: Africa, China, and Japan, and probably more.
Pauline (Montauk NY)
It's so interesting that the character traits that all cultures aspire to such as : Kindness, honesty, loyalty, bravery , strength, compassion, generosity , wisdom, etc etc have absolutely nothing to do with race but yet we continue to use race as a measuring stick. it makes no sense. I guess we have a long way to go in the intelligence dept. From an evolutionary standpoint, having more melanin in our skin maybe more advantageous than less. Global warming is real it's here it's now. The planet is heating up and the ozone layer is very thin in places. But not according to the United States of America . Burn those treaties. fire up those coal plants !

America has morphed from a predominantly British-based culture, to one more broadly European-based, to one profoundly influenced by African Americans, and it will continue to evolve over the coming centuries. Each past wave of immigration sparked enormous hostility from those already here. Yet how destructive to the American culture has each new group been? None. We're better and stronger because of our mixed national heritage. Let's keep stirring the cultural pot!
Wendy (Chicago)
Countries and civilizations are not and have never been stagnant. Demographic change has been a constant throughout the history of civilization. Buchanan, Trump and those who think like them, both here and in Europe, are on the wrong side of history. I moved back here a few years ago after many years in Sweden, where I had to listen to the same silly cries of "they" (the immigrants and refugees) are going to destroy/change our culture! "Swedish" culture is thriving just fine, but I must say that the many immigrants and refugees have made Sweden a far more fun and interesting place than it was when I first moved there.

Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramagos' 'Blindness' is one of my top-ten most favorite books. Even though I remain unaffected by the virulent disease of "white blindness" (an apt metaphor,) as a 'see-er', I still have a choice: shall I hide my sighted-status and avoid the blinded; or, resolve to aid those whom I encounter that wander alone even as, within the throes of the unguided and directionless mob, they are swept unknowingly toward toward the heap at the bottom of the Dollar Store basement stairs? As an egalitarian, I chose to assist any and all afflicted whom I encountered regardless of their bigotry or my bias (hey, we're all pink on the inside.) However, in this most recent moment of division, I am appalled to discover that I equivocate. I wake, check my mail, and hope the NYT headline reads - the Head is Dead (and, may the body soon follow!) I cheer on the hens and hope the flock pecks the fox to death. I survived cancer yet this existential crisis may prove to be my undoing. I dismay.

The message of creating jobs, tax cuts, and making America great again are the ideas that provide the sugar coating to make the policy of white supremacy palatable to those who would reject it at face value.

Pat Buchanan made a Republican out of me -- for one day. In 1996, he ran against Bob Dole in the Colorado Republican presidential primary and I switched to the GOP to vote against this creep. Then I returned to being unaffiliated.

The notion that America will become a non white majority nation requires that "whites" be defined. If it is the local southern definition that one drop of nonwhite blood makes you something other than white is used, as is the case of most of these so called projections then America is becoming non white. If the definition is that a person is white because the person perceives that he is white the result is quite different. That definition predicts a 5% decline in the white population from 75% to 70% in 2050. My relatives include people who can trace their ancestry to Puerto Rico. They would be classified as Hispanic because they come from a Spanish speaking country. They look white to me and think they are white. I also have relatives in Spanish speaking countries that come from from the same European countries that make up my ancestry. I am white in the US but they would be considered Hispanic because of where they live by our government. Privileges handed out by race are the basis of the racial classifications in the US. It is a spoils system and the so called studies are motivated to generate a political support for a discriminatory system system to win votes. We should ban the use of all race and gender classifications in the US. The French do this. After all race differences are supposedly so small that they mean nothing, except of course if you benefit or are harmed from the discrimination the classification system is supposed to create.
Lester Arditty (New York City)
The United States is a nation built on an ideology, not any specific ethnic, culture, nationality or racial commonality. As such, we have different sensibilities & unite all of us. But then there's the issues created by America's twin original sins; slavery (the kidnapping & illegal imprisonment of millions of Africans for the privilege of wealthy white plantation owners) & genocide of the Native American populations (for the expansion & benefit of white immigrants & their descendents). Unfortunately, many white Americans forget this nation was founded on an ideology for all people, not solely white Christians of European decent. Several European powers of the 1600 & 1700's vied for colonies in the Americas, Spain controlled most of the lands in the new world; including large parts of what is today The United States. Spanish cultural influence has been with us as long as The United States has existed. At the end of the day, The US has been seen by the rest of the world as a beacon of hope. While there may be White Extinction Anxiety, there is no White Extinction. It's a myth created by powerful xenophobic racists who are intentionally trying to confuse American ideals with racial purity (read WHITE).

All true and well-written, but... ...but we can write opinion pieces, revelations of all manner of self-dealing and skulduggery, of bigotry and breach of all ethical and social norms, and comment until our fingers fall off. This was all well-known and documented for all to see long ago, and he became President anyway. ...and waxing 2 years later, he's still President. Not only that, but an increasing number of people -- in the millions! --- really like the idea. Now the Republican party is trying to out-do each other to prove whose deep-red blood surges more powerfully through their veins. Say what you will as to his abundant lack of qualifications on every level, he has galvanized those people. November is still in play, those people have found their voice, and they are shouting it out. It's a different world now. ...and the other side has a voice too, that's true, and a loud one. But if there's apprehension about participating in something so innocuous as the upcoming census, then those voices are in danger of becoming just whispers in the dark...
Carlton (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
"He continued: “You cannot stop these sentiments of people who want to live together with their own and they want their borders protected.” He can live wherever he wants but denies that to others. As far as open borders, one would think he sees this country as a European one totally discounting it habitants for more than ten thousand years.
Elizabeth (Athens, Ga.)
How sad that Laura I. and Pat B. are so insecure. If they think they can "make America White Again" they are living in the wrong century - or the wrong delusion? In fact, this White Folks Only has always been a myth. The Native Americans were already here when we arrived to steal their lands and try to obliterate them. Our founding fathers brought slaves, and many of them produced children by those fathers. Buchanan and Ingraham need to move to another planet if they want a Whites only country. When we search the names of members of congress, they are becoming more and more varied. More women and more immigrants who want to work to make this country better are now serving in our government. One of the things I enjoy is watching screen credits of movies. The list of names that creates movies today is as diverse as any list you will ever find. People from all nations and of all ethnicities work together to create most of our entertainment. Like it or not, we are definitely a melting pot. I think its great!
Middleman MD (New York, NY)
This appears to be yet another in a long list of pieces that the NYT publishes for readers to ventilate their own rage, and express zealous agreement with Mr. Blow. In that sense, this piece is scarcely different from an opinion I might see written for Fox or Breitbart, which has also been written so that an identified audience can comment, "right on!" or something to similarly affirming effect. This isn't helpful to the quality of political discourse in this country, or helpful to informing the electorate. This piece was written as meat to be thrown to appreciative, yet historically uninformed, ravenous lions. The "left" in the US, which historically overlapped tremendously with organized labor, was always against allowing more immigrants into the country for the simple reason that they felt that wages would end up being suppressed. Black South Africans have rioted and violently attacked the Black Zimbabweans who have entered South Africa, not because of xenophobia so much as because they view it as not economically beneficial to South Africa. The same is true of Venezuelans who have streamed into Colombia and Brazil, and Rohingya who have been displaced into Bangladesh. While not discounting racial discrimination and oppression as factors in explaining world events, it is woefully reductionistic and frankly, silly to rely on racial hatred as an explanation for everything, while behaving as if other factors aren't news that is fit to print.
Cool as a fan (Durham, NC)
This is is just one big deflection. While opposition to immigration can be about factors not centered around race, that’s clearly not the case now here in America. Here in America, this is about race. The whole rise of Trump is about race so let’s not deflect because it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Jonathan Smoots (Milwaukee, Wi)
white majority population or not, if 70% of the wealth of this nation continues to go to the top 1% (mostly white) we will have a larger and larger underclass (under educated, underemployed, under potentialized) and getting browner by the year-----our society, however multicultural, will face an ever widening gulf between haves and have nots. Lets avoid that and vote for policies that raise up all people or a revolution (I hope) will come.

As white supremacists become more aware of the demographic changes that are happening now and will inevitably continue notwithstanding their ugly, vicious efforts, the more dangerous they become. Like a mortally wounded animal. Mr. Blow's keen voice and ability to get to the heart of the matter have never been more important.

Is anyone watching the World Cup? What strikes me most is the absence of lily-white on the field and in the stands.

Trumpism at its core is nothing more than a statement about what it means to be American. Its guiding principle is that the only real Americans are white Americans. Just being an American citizen, whether born here or abroad, does not make you a real American (just ask Barack Obama). Its philosophy is following in lockstep the natural progression that racist movements have followed throughout history. We have already seen that the followers of this cult have dehumanized immigrants to the point that they can feel nothing for crying children separated from their parents. By calling for elimination of due process Trump has made clear his position that those who are obviously non-white do not deserve equal protection under the law. White Americans without college degrees, both male and female, have shown that they can still band together in sufficient numbers to lead the country down a path of chaos and destruction in support of white nationalism. Maybe its a good thing that the demographics in the United States are changing. We all want America to be great. But we don't want it to be evil.
Andy (Brooklyn)
Well when you read about some of the identity politics activism that goes on today...and how overtly stupid it is, one can help think there are underlying motives. Case in point - removing Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from a book award because of "racism concerns." That is the bizarre agenda of people with major hang ups who wish to erase culture because they feel they are not represented correctly. Never mind the books represent the world of "Little House on the Prairie" and white pioneers in the late 1800's. The minds behind these decisions clearly have no context of time, place and history. The left is burying themselves in absurdity. And it has gone beyond political correctness. Now it is like some sort of wacko payback against ancestors they don't see as their own.
W (DC)
Yep. As a professional white guy living in a coastal bubble, I will admit that I was naive about the degree of the nation's racial progress. We elected Obama, I work with plenty of bright, capable people of color, and count some of them as friends. I knew racism was still a big problem, but I thought it was generally more subtle, more subconscious. I thought blatant, overt racism was like smoking, something that was once common, but was now receding to the margins of society, largely still flourishing only in the underclass. I thought Trump could never be elected spouting such obvious racism. But I was wrong. Racism put Trump in power, and racism is one of the driving forces of his presidency. That is the true secret to why so many people tolerate all of his obvious, flailing incompetence - they know he is doing all he can to Make America White Again. Soon, the demographic wave will wash these fools away, but until then, we are all destined to live in "interesting" times, I'm afraid.

What the white racists fear the most is that the immigrants, the brown people, the black people, the yellow people, will outwork them, and take away the economic primacy that they have long enjoyed. And that is probably a legitimate fear, because these refugees fleeing violence, repression, and broken states come here highly motivated. Pat Buchanan and his ilk have been coasting for generations. The white people incited by the rhetoric against 'illegal immigrants' complain of being displaced from the jobs that have been automated or off-shored away by the white CEOs and plutocrats manipulating them now. Immigrants to this country, legal or illegal, bring new energy and new willingness to start businesses, work hard, and succeed. Trump's supporters resent this because it is a challenge to them to stop coasting, work harder, study harder, or fail... and too many of them are too lazy to work that hard. They prefer to back Trump, enact protectionist barriers and "walls", and coast along further inside their protected country, while falling further and further behind the rest of the world.
Raindrop (US)
I highly recommend the book New Old World by Pallavi Aiyar, who is a reporter for an Indian newspaper who has lived in and reported from China and Europe. She discusses this fear of hard working immigrants in Europe. Her perspective is not one we often here in the mainstream US.
Pittsmom (Pittsburgh)
There is no way to stop racial change in this country even if we end democracy. I'm white and I wouldn't want to live in a "white ethnostate" even if I could. So it's impossible for white supremacists to win. The population is now and is going to remain racially diverse forever. And light skinned people are not going anywhere. This fear is just being pumped up by the Trump administration.
Steve (New Jersey)
Much of Latin America represents an ethnic mix of European and indigenous people. Take a closer look and you quickly realize that many Latin Americans are part Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, etc. In other words, many Latinos are predominantly Caucasian. When they migrate to the United States, however, they don't identify as 50% Spanish and 50% indigenous. Instead, they identify as Latino. If you used a genetic service like Ancestry.com, I suspect you'd find that the majority of this country has European roots and the numbers are growing (albeit Southern European).

The more we know about individual and population genetics, the more we understand that "white" people are not really all white anyway. Of course, you'd have to believe in science to understand that.
sdavidc9 (Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut)
As people who have lived in this country before the waves of immigration, black Americans should be part of the predominant American culture threatened by waves of immigrants. The Southern definition of white made anyone with any non-white blood non-white; now that we can test for the origins of our genetic material, most Americans would not be white according to this definition. The definition of "really white" used to include only English, Dutch, Scots, Scots-Irish (Protestant Irishmen) and perhaps a few others (pure Spaniards, maybe). The "really whites" resisted pollution from the original Americans and the slaves they brought from Africa, then Irish, then Italians, Jews, Slavs, Mestizos, Chinese, Japanese, and so on. It would be nice if the later-arriving whites of the West and Midwest remembered their original reception. Perhaps they will soon be reminded of it.

Some years ago , I was invited to attend a swearing in of new citizens in Brooklyn . It was mid July ; we took a sweltering train from Manhattan , and were ushered in to the guest section in the balcony . The majority of prospective new Americans were not white , but were tempered by shades of brown , and black . The excitement was palpable , dressed in their Sunday best , a hush descended in the hall . One could almost feel the pride they generated . It was a beautiful and solemn sight . Please America , if you can attend one of these and remember that this is what our country represents . These people that day reminded me how fortunate it is to be an American , something most of us take for granted and that they do not . That day was not about color but of just people who felt it an honor to join the rest of us . The hot train ride to and from the ceremony was well worth it .
Mr. Bridge (San Antonio, Texas)
The problem with power, generally, is that we who have it wield it to suppress others, because we fear that if those "other people" get power they'll treat us as badly as we treated them. It's an absurd cycle that we all should be smart enough to figure out.
CO54 (Denver, CO)
One of the major reasons that the decline of white majority is accelerating faster than they predicted is because of the acceleration of inter-marriage. Given that our census data does not have a category for biracial, many of those placed in Hispanic or Asian or African-American categories are 1/2 Caucasian. It is ridiculous that we continue to collect the census data this way.
Diana (Dallas, TX)
I am white but I am not at all fearful of our future. I actually look forward to the blending of cultures because that is what makes us stronger. And if, in some not so distant future, all the races are mixed, maybe racism will disappear completely - before we annihilate ourselves now with all this turmoil and infighting.
wak (MD)
I don't know a single person who takes Buchanan seriously (actually, not even anyone who would listen to him). But apparently, Mr Blow does take him seriously. If there is such a thing as "White anxiety" (which this column claims but does not make the case for), it would be very helpful to understand what's really behind this: What's the threat to those affected and how is it real? "Strip[ing] all other rationales away ..." in consideration of the matter, as this column commands, seems more like a rallying call than anything else. That's what Trump and company do as a tactic for creating fear. Being unthinking, as Hannah Arendt observed in her view of the "banality of evil," isn't going to do any good for overcoming the dangerous national divide we now have. If "immigration" is a threat to some for whatever reason, I think dealing with this directly with authentic understanding is the way out. Polarization is clearly not the answer. It's certainly easy to be suspicious of Trump and company, based on their implemented agenda of exclusivity and self-interest. This not withstanding, support for Trump et al may well be largely based on citizens who feel pushed around and for years un-listened to, in need of a strong voice promising to be the savior.

The Best of the West is freedom, reason, the rule of law, equality before the law, the brotherhood and sisterhood of all men and women. The Worst of the West is racism. The founding documents, and the founding men, embodied both. We would like American history to be the process of keeping the best and freeing ourselves of the worst. Clinging to "being white" as some kind of end in itself is the opposite. It was a great and symbolic moment for the best of America when Khizr Khan offered Donald Trump his copy of the Constitution. I like to imagine that both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, with a couple of hundred years under their betts to watch from above, would have approved.
Ann P (San Diego)
I think one of the reasons that the “white” part of the country hates California so much is that we already went through this very issue, back in the 1990’s. Manufacturing jobs were disappearing, and at the same time, it had become clear that, because of immigration, the white majority wasn’t going to hold. So the California Republican Party went all in on anti-immigrant race baiting. And...look what happened. Manufacturing jobs still left, immigrants still came, the white majority still became a white minority. California survived and thrived, and is the economic engine that drives the country. The California GOP, however, took millions of socially conservative, hard working immigrants who would have been a natural fit for the GOP, and turned them into Democrats for generations to come, and turned California from being the purple state that elected Reagan and Swarzenegger into a reliably blue state. That white minority is benefiting from the hard work and brainpower that the immigrants bring to the economy, which continues to push ahead full force.
Alexander Harrison (Wilton Manors, Fla.)
Have yet to see either of my submissions published re this article, but in shallah, EB will decide in my favor, "En tout cas, "wrote that article is important for several reasons. First, author for the first time in my recollection has disagreed with someone without belittling him.,Obviously he respects Buchanan as a fellow journalist, even offers a plug for his book. Second, both are in agreement on the gradual disappearance of "whites," an inexact term,in this country unless measures are taken to reverse the decline, namely opposition to open borders, realization that a country doesn't become rich by importing the poor, uneducated .. Third, those who can't wait for persons of color to be the majority overlook or don't care that when 1 talks about whites, 1 is also talking about our Anglo Saxon forebears. those who made this country great, bequeathed to us our democratic system of values. Those seeking to enter come from failed states, and don't care a whit about our Constitution because they did not have one in their countries of origin.Assimilation is a great idea, but in today's America, those who call for assimilation are often dismissed as bigots. If assimilation is the highest form of patriotism, then , thanks by and large to the Democratic far left, love of country is in decline. Do not also dismiss the factor of legalized abortion as a factor in our decline. We are approaching zero population growth in this country, equivalent to a :"refusal of combat!"

When Western Cultures were traveling to distant lands and taking over, All was “ good”. Now, as Western Cultures have been forced to retreat back to their personal enclaves and deal with reverse migration, the End is neigh. The World turns and the Old is giving way the New. Nothing stays the same, that is both a good and bad thing.

The ideals of America are based on the Constitution not the color of our skin. The people who are coming here long for that, not to change it.
Robert Egolf (Pennsylvania)
Most of us want to view our country as a shining beacon on the hill. However, it is possible to construct another darker narrative of our history. It is a history of a prolonged vicious genocide rolling westward from the earliest white settlements on the Atlantic coast, of duplicitous and violent actions against the country's original inhabitants. It is a history of the importation of millions of black Africans into chattel slavery, climaxed by a war that claimed 600,000 lives, and followed by a Jim Crow era that saw thousands of black citizens lynched wantonly and otherwise deprived of their rights. Most of us elderly citizens can remember Jim Crow in operation. So we are not the simon pure exaamples of enlightened humanity that we would like to think ourselves. But we can do better, if we want to, and God help us to deal humanely with these refugees crowding our southern border.
Mike (CT)
Reading thru the comments, it is amazing how CMB can spark discussion. Lots of racists on both sides. But I disagree with the premise that Trump voters are racists in fear of the 'others". I believe open borders are not in the best interests of the average US citizen. It is not an irrational belief. Uncontrolled immigration suppresses wages for working class citizens, and makes the already thin safety net thinner. Separating families is immoral and unacceptable, but there is no universal right to immigrate to the US, and the border needs to be enforced.
Lee Harrison (Albany / Kew Gardens)
What a strawman. Anybody here actually for "open borders?" NO? So why don't you try to figure out a way to have controlled borders that doesn't involve crimes against humanity.
Leo (Seattle)
Anyone who knows anything about human evolution understands that discrimination on the basis of race or skin color is pure nonsense. We all share a recent common ancestor and whatever differences that exist between us are tiny compared to our similarities. But there is a side to being human that isn't very nice, and it's basically this: anytime in history when two different groups of humans encountered one another, it ended badly-either one disappeared from existence altogether, or was completely dominated by the other. I feel connected to everyone on the planet-we are all really brothers and sisters-but at the same time I also genuinely fear the xenophobia that seems to be written into our DNA. Is it morally wrong that people feel threatened by the prospect of being in the minority? Yes, absolutely. Is it unjustified to be threatened by that prospect? Our past offers a clear answer to that question.
Jim (Newport Beach, CA)
I think it’s a mistake to discount the fears that underlie Buchanan’s comments, which appear to be shared by a near-majority of American voters, or to simplify them as solely an expression of white supremacy. It is an error also to think that only white people fear losing cultural identity or are racist. To the extent that these fears express themselves as racism then they must be rebuked, but to not address these fears, whether based on real or imaginary threats, will result in these Americans’ continued loyalty to Trump and his ilk, and the continued polarization of this country.

I believe Mr. Blow is correct when he writes that the core of the Trump immigration policy is "White extinction anxiety, white displacement anxiety, white minority anxiety." What he doesn't say is that the anxiety arises from fear that the future composite non-white majority will treat future white minority as the white majority has historically treated the non-white minorities. If I believed this, I would be anxious too.
Curious (West Coast)
If the definition of "white" was broadened to include people who are up to 50% "white," there would be no danger of becoming "displaced." The common American requirement of racial purity makes it impossible to retain majority status for "whites." In Norway, a child of a Norwegian mother and an African father is considered 1/2 "white" and 1/2 "black" in the US, this child would be considered "black" or "African American" (which is really crazy, as the child is Norwegian, and not American at all.)
freyda (ny)
Better hurry and give black and brown children a good education and make sure to teach them to think for themselves unlike some white Americans who came before them so they can put past oppression into a perspective that informs them about how to make a better world for people of all colors, genders, and whatever we humans are. And, kids, don't forget about our mother, the planet.
AndyW (Chicago)
To paraphrase what Barack Obama often expresses; “when viewed across the long arc of history, this time will soon pass”. Trump is an amalgamation of two things, white anxiety and radical economic transformation. He cannot be viewed exclusively as a symptom of racial animus, though he undeniably leverages it daily. He definitely used racism’s grotesque ugliness to propel himself to a razor thin plurality in the electoral college. Looking through the lens of future history, we are in the last third of a two-hundred fifty year transition towards true racial and sexual equality. The ugliness of Trumpism is but a final scream from the tar pits of racial ignorance, a place from which the rest of us have only recently managed to escape. As his generation passes, the percentage who think like him will radically diminish. This generational shift has been fairly consistent for two hundred years, minus a few Trump-like bumps in the road. If we remain on-guard and true to ourselves, we will all get though this together.

Wow, superb article. You always articulate what I feel, but so eloquently, with such brilliant, poetic language. You are a gift. Thank you.

Pat Buchanan you may recall is so anti-Semitic, even National Review condemned him for it. He more than once has campaigned that the United States should never have declared war on Nazi Germany. (Historical note: it was the Nazis who declared war on the United States, a stab in the back four days after Pearl Harbor.) Instead we should have allied with the Nazis to "save European civilization". So he's not just opposed to non-whites and whites of hispanic culture, he also is not fond of many European whites whom he would rather have perished in a Final Solution than have, allied to us, beaten the Nazis. I wish this man were a fringe element. Instead, he's one of the more influential thinkers of the GOP.
Karen Cormac-Jones (Neverland)
I always thought when people like Patrick Buchanan died off, we would be rid of THAT mindset. But no, here comes 30-something Stephen Miller and his Nazi sentiments, one lockstep away from becoming Anders Breivik in Norway. I am sickened by this open hatred. Thank you, Mr. Blow, for being here in this place and in this time.

This land, invaded by white Europeans, many of whom supported slavery, was once populated by what we now call "Native Americans," even though they did not call the land by that name. If some invaders had their way, the total population of Native Americans would have been eliminated. That the white invaders introduced black and brown skinned people into their majority midst should not be overlooked. Once established with a constitution, the nation became famous as the "Melting Pot," where eventually all races and religions meant "America to me." The Buchanan-Trump-white domination movement's attempt to grab power and (eternal) power over others is not too unlike Hitler's misguided, horrifying attempt at racial purification. The United States depends on immigrants, just as it earlier depended on slaves. If Trump, Buchanan and their acolytes want fewer non-white immigrants, finding ways to bring compassionate, ethical, moral and less lethally brutal governments to such abusive nations would be the reasonable place to start. Returning these United States to its violent, bullying, bigoted and racist past is not the answer. Until human decency triumphs over malevolent evil, the Slaughter of the Innocents will continue to drive human beings toward Emma Lazarus' Golden Door. Doug Giebel, Big Sandy, Montana

Charles is right. Could white America someday be ruled by Latinos and/or Blacks in many areas. Of course. Even if we blocked all Latino immigration today. You can't change demographic trends overnight. You can't start manufacturing white babies out of thin air. Learn to live with it.

Hard to believe Buchanan is still around.... While decrying the "invasion" of non-whites on this continent, he and his ilk forget that whites were the invaders to begin with! And whichever ethnic groups end up in the majority and/or in charge in the US, they will be Americans, all of them.
Jorge (USA)
Dear NYT: Mr. Blow's journalistic stock in trade is accusing folks of racism and cultural oppression. Sure, there are likely some -- yes, even many -- white Trump supporters who fear the "extinction" of American "white" culture by sheer overwhelming numbers. They are ignorant. But Mr. Blow is equally ignorant in dishing up this same false, racist premise. Our American cultural experience is so much more complex (and wonderful) than black and white. We do not have a "white" culture -- we have a polyglot culture of folks from all over the world, held together by a framework of Enlightenment ideals of democracy, the rule of law, a belief in reason and the ability of people to do the right thing when given the facts, and a commitment to giving everyone a "shot" at economic success. We often fail at these things, but this is our core. Mr. Blow's primarily racial perspective only divides us --as does Buchanon's nativism -- and betrays his own tribalism. And consider the hypocrisy here: The same "woke" folks such as Mr. Blow who endlessly decry "gentrification" and "cultural appropriation" accuse "white people" of trying to defend their own culture. A little perspective, please.
BoingBoing (NY)
yeah right. Open all the borders, let the dispossessed from sub-saharan africa, middle east, latin and south america, central and south asia and far east flood the US. See the country crumble under weight of new immigrants economically and see all the social progress made (racial, sexual, religious and free speech) disappear due to the fact that these liberties are anathema to most of these people. The deluded liberals and their white guilt and constant self-flagellation! thank god Trump came along to counter liberal lunacy. And I am an atheist. see what happens to Germany in ten years time now that they have a allowed a million refugees (who have retrograde, backward norms) in with no questions asked. all these snowflakes will be thanking Trump I reckon.

I would ask how Blow would feel if the demographic trends showed a possible extinction of black people. Who knows, but I suspect he'd be upset.

I am unaware of any demographic trends showing the possible "extinction" of "white" people,(though there are trends indicating the possible extinction of all people).

Who would s talking about extinction '? Equating being in a minority with being extinct is revealing of your real fear.

This is essentially the argument of an individual who has an "arrested development disorder". Mr. Blow was rewarded early in life, received multiple reward pellets for being able to spew liberal agendas. This in a manner of speaking arrested his development of character and maturity. The situation across the earth has witnessed the rise and wealth of some nations and races and see others not fare as well. This is what we used to refer to as the ability to adapt or perhaps in some terms survival of the fittest. Creating successful cultures and societies is nothing to be ashamed of and certainly worth protecting. I would no more open my home to strangers and let them live among my wife and kids while using the home resources than I would welcome illegal or unqualified immigrants into the US. this is what Charles doesn't understand because he is full of "reward pellets". The left has in my opinion abandoned the country and come out against capitalism. Reverand Al Sharpton, in Chris Rock's wonderful documentary "Good Hair" takes on the overwhelming Asian ownership of hair salons in Black communities. He calls the ownership exploitation. but who is really exploiting the black community, the Asians who perceiving a need are catering to that need, or Reverend Sharpton. Mr. Blow is essentially performing a similar activity here. The fact that nothing other than the ability to rant/write liberal agendas has been required of Mr. Blow.

Here is what I don't understand. Why doesn't the Times encourage Mr. Blow to express himself more expansively? This column consists of 850 words. Delete the quotations, and you're left with 403. Delete most of the lead-in, attributive phrasing to the quotations ("The report continued" and suchlike), and you're left with 373 words, or 42.8 percent of the wordage.

The evidence is clear that the white, non-Hispanic segment of our population has been and continues to decline as a percentage of the population and now even in raw numbers. The question is why. Decisions to bear children are personal and not dictated directly by government policy or other authorities. It has been common here and in other countries for birth rates to decline in groups that become more affluent. Choosing to have children is costly in terms of time, money, career opportunities and in other ways. I doubt that most young people think about preserving or growing their racial or ethnic group more than about what their life satisfaction goals may be. It would be interesting to see the research on factors that influence family plannning choices.

Pat Buchanan would make a far better leader than Trump!
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
Mr. Blow is projecting Progressive bigotry onto Republicans. Margaret Sanger was a believer in the science of eugenics, that had a scientific consensus, backed by the phrenologists, that the mental acuity of the superior white people was regressing because of interbreeding with lesser humans. In those days, the darker folks whose reproduction needed to be reduced were swarthy Italians and southern Mediterranean folks. According to the census bureau, 80% of American Hispanics are white, and only by Progressive ideology can they be skimmed off as "brown". Republicans welcome all races and nationalities By the second or third generation, darker skinned Caucasians don't realize they are being victimized, because they never were, except by Progressives.

Perhaps the fear is appropriate,if you examine countries around the world where the new majorities we are anticipating are as described by Mr Blows dreams and are in power elected or grabbed, the corruption and human rights abuses are rampant, perhaps that’s what he’s looking for here in the USA.

This is nothing new. Buchanan has been spewing his racist, Christianist vomit for decades. Good thing he has his friends at Fox to keep his soapbox polished. These people are execrable.

"Strip all the other rationales away from this draconian immigration policy. This is at the core: White extinction anxiety, white displacement anxiety, white minority anxiety." I feel people of goodwill must recognize what Hunter Thompson describes in his book, "Hell Angels," that "racism . . . be understood as directed at the political elite rather than (just) minority groups." Retaliation against anyone making it in America, regardless of their skin color, is perhaps a sign of a deeper illness. Those who see themselves "as losers in an increasingly technical, intellectual, global, inclusive, progressive American society" can justify retaliatory violence in a game they can't possibly win. See Susan McWilliam's article in The Nation: https://www.thenation.com/article/this-political-theorist-predicted-the-...

isnt it interesting when a non white racist talks about what is essentially GENOCIDE.... they like to dehumanize their targets by criminalizing them. this black racist coward and all those like him NEVER volunteer their own countries for what they perpetrate towards predominantly white countries...and would in fact be up in arms at the attempted genocide.

Pat: You forget our white European relatives came in and changed the Indian’s way of life. How is that fair? It's not and we haven't made restitution or acknowledged the fact. This is one of the most succinct explanations of our current political divide I've recently read. Studies I've read back this up.
chambolle (Bainbridge Island)
In 'conservative land,' the whole point of the political exercise has been to lend credence to the old saw 'the rich get richer, the poor get children.' That approach to 'leadership' has come home to roost. While the members of our white consumer culture have 'traded in their babies for a new Chevrolet' [thank you, Elvis Costello], the rest of the world remains wedded to family values, rather than merely giving them lip service and then doing everything possible to make raising a family as difficult and economically burdensome as possible. Furthermore, now that virtually anyone, anywhere can communicate instantly with people thousands of miles away, and can travel nearly as rapidly and seamlessly, the obstacles of distance, geography and time that gave rise to tribes, nations and 'races' have melted away. Unless we squander the next few generations in self-destructive nativist race wars, 'whiteness' will all but cease to exist. For that matter, so will 'blackness.' So long as we can freely breed across national and racial lines, we will inexorably trend toward one race. The question is whether humanity is capable of evolving along with that biological reality, or whether we will destroy one another in a futile effort to roll back the clock, push back the tide, and cling to our superstitions, prejudices and 'heritage.'
Fred Mueller (Providence)
My daughter-in-law is Fillipino/American. Her parents are immigrants. I'm 1/2 German, 1/4 French (Huguenot), and a little Scotish/Irish. My wife is a "thoroughbred" Italian American. Our 2 grandsons are the future, and oh by the way Euro/Asian children are gorgeous. Our Americanism has nothing to do with nations of origin, and everything to do with the political ideals of our founding fathers, and yes, how those ideals have been improved (often fitfully and painfully) by generations of Americans, ever striving for a more perfect union. I like what I heard Quincy Jones say once, "the world is gumbo now". Right on "Q".
KaneSugar (Mdl Georgia )
Of course "Western Culture" has no problem snuffing out other cultures. This is nothing but natural evolution of the human race due to globalization. It has happened thousands over 2-3 million years on smaller scales...it is how life works. If we survive the upheavals of man-made chaos & climate change, I imagine humans will probably look more homogeneous in the future. There is a lot of benefit to diversifying gene pools. If someone is vested only in the value of their skin color or national origins then they got on the the wrong boat. (I am a human being 1st and european white by accident of birth)
Philip Holt (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
The U.S. claims to be founded on principles--freedom, inalienable rights, democracy, and all that--not on race. That is, we do not claim that the basis of our nationhood is that we're a convenient bit of geography (we aren't) or that we're the ancestral homeland of any tribe (we're the homeland of several, but not the one that's running the place). That being the case, why should whites have any more freedom or inalienable rights than anybody else?
Margot (U.S.A.)
Oh, stop. Out of 330 million Americans, barely 60% are "white". Out of 7.6 billion humans on the planet, very few are "white". The problem areas are not "white"; those are the relief valve and solution areas to the problem areas around the planet where men refuse to keep it in their pants or use condoms, as instructed by some ancient desert peasant religion...of men.
Gerry (California)
I am having difficulty wrapping my mind around the concept. Our ancestors, many well-meaning at the time, migrated to these shores and displaced any earlier immigrants they found. I guess this means that most of North America was then officially "white." We have had a good run of it - even though we have had our own misfires. By and large the United States has stood for freedom and shared opportunity for the last century. There are visible cracks in the foundation but I still see a lot of good in the people of this nation. Evolution of a sort is about to overtake us and change the racial character of the country. It will happen no matter what our leaders do. It is time to welcome the diversity and the possibilities. One could even go out on a limb and say, perhaps it is the will of God. Now that may be a radical thought!
CMC (Vancouver, BC)
So, in order to "save" Western ideals and culture, we need to embrace a dictatorship and racism and abandon Wester ideals and culture? That's what he and the right are espousing, no? The USA has always described itself as a melting pot - where people come and leave behind the culture they were born into, embracing their new country and its American ways. In Canada, our philosophy is a cultural "mosaic" - in other words, immigrants aren't expected to leave their culture behind, but are expected to embrace Canadian norms and follow Canadian laws. Either way, immigrants within a generation become more western, no matter what their colour. With a decent education system, this process is enhanced. So, rather than the death of western ideals, welcoming immigrants spreads those ideals to people from non-western backgrounds. The right should be frightened of the people who don't come to America, not the ones seeking entry.
Joe (Portland)
I am in the midst of a three week trip through Italy and Germany -- our friends. #1 takeaway (politically) is that they find Trump almost comical. For example, a Berlin Uber driver originally from Lebanon thinks he is "crazy" but then giggles. #2 takeaway is that nationalism is taking root here, and we have Trump and all those who sat on their hands on election day to thank for this. Our world is becoming fractured, fearful and angry, and many of the events of 1933 that led to world War 2 are a stones throw away fro happening again. We need to fight this ugly fear of the other or be prepared to face worldwide consequences. Vote, and get others to as well...it is our only chance!
Kate Shephard (Oahu)
30 years ago, a young white couple could get excellent financial aid to attend already affordable colleges, graduate on time, get married, rent an affordable apartment, find jobs with benefits and fair wages, and start a family in their early to mid twenties. Today, NONE of this is possible. A kid can't become an "independent" student and qualify for financial aid until the age of 24, when she should have already graduated, so Student Loans leave her with crushing debt if she is even able to get the classes needed to graduate at her underfunded public college, which she probably won't. Rent has not doubled--it has increased ten-fold! Without being able to afford a decent place to live or earn a degree by 25, their lives are put on hold, and they DO NOT LAUNCH. All the necessary systems that lead to child-bearing have been ELIMINATED in this economy where corporations pocket billions in profits and leave 20-somethings with wages so low that they are forced to remain in their childhood bedroom and live a mostly celibate, depressing life while mom and dad get older every day on the couch in the den. THIS is the cause of white extinction. And while the Republicans hold all the power, NOTHING will change and, ironically, by giving all the wealth to their corporate cronies, they are legislating the demise of the very race they believe to be superior.
Faith (Raleigh)
Exactly right; well said.
KaneSugar (Mdl Georgia )
While 30 yrs ago most black & brown citizens were still struggling to attain even half of what came so easily to white people. The regressives (GOP) just ensured more white people got to enjoy the struggle too, while fewer got it all. Republican voters isn't this what you always wanted? Time to wise up.
Observer (Pa)
Charle, what you are describing is fundamentally a fear amongst Whites that immigration is the first stage of Colonization, what "White" nations did to the regions these immigrants come from until the very recent past. It's not about extinction but about the loss of power which is even more threatening. What we are witnessing is the sunsetting of the West as the Rest of The World comes of age and technology, including communication and travel, make migration attractive and possible. How such migration ultimately affects the West as we know it today is an open question, which is why "we are a country of immigrants" and "diversity is a strength" are messages that ring hollow with so many. It is ironic that the same innovations that make the migrant flows possible are also the first to adversely affect those with modest education or skills for our new reality. So while there are some who are simply racists or believers in white supremacy, many more are plain scared and conflate a declining economic and social status with the potential ultimate cultural impact of mass migration. A first step towards alleviate some of their fears is to acknowledge the unspoken rather than harping back to our past.
David G (NJ)
Interesting. A couple of thoughts: First, the less America is like Pat Buchanan, the more I will like it. Second, there have always been two American responses to fear of the immigrant "other." One has been the "keep 'em out" approach, with its long and inglorious history and its current champions of Trump, Buchanan and their ilk. The other American response was always to promote assimilation of our values -- democracy, rule of law, individualism, etc. It's a historical irony that the left, having decided that assimilation was paternalistic and culturally disrespectful, has left only the reactionary, exclusionary approach.
Joel (Brooklyn)
The main question on my mind since Trump's election is which one is the better analogue for Trump: James K. Polk or James Buchanan?
Cece (Phoenix)
Are white people like him afraid that when more people of color come to power they will treat white people the way white people have historically treated people of color? I doubt it will happen- white people segregated into ghettos, deprived of voting rights, demonized, shot down by police for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, pulled over for driving while white in a black neighborhood. I doubt it will happen because people of color know how that hurts, but some might be vindictive enough to try to get retribution on white people for hundreds of years of abuse. I look forward to the day when there will be no "minorities", when we embrace diversity and learn from each other and respect each other's heritage.
merchantofchaos (Tampa Florida )
CeCe, we must not forget, and we do, that there's more suppressed, below income white folks than any other race. If we come together and accept we are mistreated by class, not race, then there's nothing we can't accomplish!
KaneSugar (Mdl Georgia )
Yes, I think there is a deep seated fear due to guilt in many, though few would recognize it in themselves.
Trans Cat Mom (Atlanta, GA)
And in many other cases, white people look at places like Detroit, Newark, Venezuela, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and other places led by and dominated by people of color and they see nothing but public health crises, corruption, crime, poor management of resources, and poverty. And so they are fearful that widespread minority dominance and leadership will lead to the same. But here’s the rub; even if this is 100% true, they’re still overlooking how vibrant, diverse, flavorful and artistic each of these places are, and when you account for these factors I would argue that all of these places are far more preferable than Switzerland, Sweden, or Portland. Low crime, wealth, high IQs, and health are seriously overrated. Racially so.
sarah (N.J.)
There should not be a constant discussion of racism, since humanity began in Africa, We are connected. Check the Smithsonian.
Diana Foster (Oakland, CA)
These news articles which report that whites will soon be a minority are irresponsible. As a demographer, let me set the record straight. There is no reason to incite alarm at fluctuations in the racial/ethnic make-up of the country. The idea that because birth rates are currently higher among people of color means that white people will soon be outnumbered or out-voted is wrong. Fertility is declining -- all over the world and among all racial/ethnic groups. Immigrants have higher fertility than native born Americans. After they arrive, their fertility and descendants’ fertility converges with native born people. Why? Because there is a widespread preference for fewer children. As couples gain access to resources, their desire for large families and their ability to prevent unintended pregnancy goes up. So whites are reaching the point of replacement fertility faster than some other ethnic groups because they are wealthier and have been here longer. But eventually we will all be there. The native born white population is older and has higher mortality than the immigrant population because very few people immigrate when they are elderly. Immigrants are young working-age people, who happen to also be in their reproductive years. People who insist on racialized political power can be comforted that white people will be the largest group for the foreseeable future. So they’ll have some time to transcend their instincts toward tribal us-versus-them politics.
Eric Ryan (Dallas)
In addition to untrue criticism of Hillary prior to the 2016 election, the thing I heard most from future Trump voters was that America was becoming a “majority-minority” country. I firmly believe that the outcome of the election was dictated by a combination of racism, Russian interference, and the ridiculously unimportant issue of Hillary’s emails obscenely promoted by the GOP, leading to poor judgment by Mr. Comey. Fear of “the other” and racial and ethnic animus govern the day and America has taken its eyes off the ball. Putin and Xi could not be any happier.
merchantofchaos (Tampa Florida )
Eric, Let's pasture Hillary already. It's beyond time to move on. Her emails were important, it cast doubt on her integrity. She lost, we don't talk about Gore, the politician; let's look at what's ahead and paramount in the future, is distancing us from the Clintons.

I hope someday people will finally come to the realization that race is a completely human creation. the are no separate races of humans. If you don't believe me Go and read the Wikipedia article. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(human_categorization)?wprov=sfla1 Biologically speaking we are all descended from Africa. We are all Africans whether you like it or not.
Margot (U.S.A.)
Overpopulation is a human creation, as well. If people in 3rd world dysfunctional nations weren't so violent, ignorant and used birth control - there'd be no migration or immigration issue anywhere, in any 1st world nation. There's not one nation that wants immigrants showing up on the doorstep, just a handful of small European nations and the U.S. guilt tripped into letting them in.
K.Walker (Hampton Roads, Va)
This article is spot on. The party of Lincoln has become the party of white privilege. Of course, whites are worried. They have something that has bestowed enormous privileges upon them. Some understand that...most don't...and more then a few don't care. Thats why there are so many black and brown men in jail. Thats why Trump wants to build a wall...to keep America white
David Cohen (Newman Lake, WA)
In other words, Trumps Immigration Policies are based on an attempt to preserve white domination and White Supremacy in America. America First and Make America Great Again are based on the hyped-up fears of the loss of white political power and the fear of "those people." Fear, loathing, hatred and racism are inexorably linked to the legislative policies of the Trump administration. Beware, Be Aware, Be Vigilant!
Dale Merrell. (Boise, Idaho)
What whites like Buchanan and Trump fear most is they, as a minority, would receive the same scorn and exploitation their kind has heaped on the backs of minorities since the founding of this nation.
AndyW (Chicago)
The typical global citizen, a medium toned person living in the year 2500, will look back upon this time with perplexed amusement. As I always calmly tell people who still choose to look the other way and support Trump;” Hey that’s OK, you own him. He’s your legacy”. They usually look down and become very silent after that.
John (Greenville, ME)
Great comments, but we may be in danger of over-thinkings the motives of Buchanan, Trump et al. They're flogging their hateful ideology because it pays in dollars and power. DJ is proud of his Jewish daughter and immigrant wife (one presumes), but not enough to celebrate them to his base base.
Big Tony (NYC)
We often share a national hypocrisy regarding the might of our nation. This nations' might and dominance were built upon the sweat and slave equity of immigrants and Africans. The original and rapidly vanishing "WASPs," of the Mayflower heritage have long fallen out of majority status. Italian and Irish immigrants were not even considered white when they first arrived on these shores. One day we will hopefully break the fabricated yolk of race and simply look at each other as humans.

Growing up Asian in a predominantly white neighborhood has taught me a lot about life. It has shown me that school - in its worst and most hideous form - is a microcosm for the "adult world." You may not have had the same experience as me, like how I was told to wear colored contacts (to make my natural chocolate eyes to an artificial blue) or how I was shunned for expressing my culture. For the longest time, I wanted nothing more than to "fit in" to be part of a majority. I sacrificed my heritage to conform to other's perceptions of what is "right." Or, shall I say, what is "white" and "wrong." I don't want the society that my future children grow up in to be the same. I don't want them to conform just because the "White culture is dying." I've lived the majority of my life killing my Asian heritage, being told it was wrong for me to be Asian. To degrade other cultures for your own selfish interests is disgusting and intolerable. To claim that your culture is dying is abhorrently false. Your insane fear of having a country full of beautiful shades and pigments is similar to that of a psychopath's. Numerous immigrants did not come to the United States to be slandered for the complexion of their pigment. They migrated because they wanted a place to belong, where life was better. What's the use of having "united" in our country's name when the only thing our politicians do is divide?
Heather (San Diego, CA)
The Pat Buchanan’s and Donald Trump’s of the world conflate ethnicity with economics and race with rule of law. Many of their supporters will argue that they are not white supremacists and not racists, but then continue to make racist statements because they don’t know how to NOT confuse ethnicity with economics and race with rule of law. Pat Buchanan fears the level of poverty, lawlessness, and lack of infrastructure that exists in Mexico. Those problems are not Mexico’s culture anymore than poverty anywhere in the United States is U.S. culture. But Buchanan thinks that Mexican immigrants will bring the problems that they are fleeing and hurt the U.S. economy, civil order, and infrastructure. It's a mistake to hiss “Racist!” at Buchanan and Trump and their supporters. Why? Because it doesn’t help them consider what am I really afraid of? Is it the color of someone’s skin? Or am I afraid another person’s struggle will become mine? Am I afraid my neighborhood will become a place where my children are terrified of daily gun violence? That jobs will leave my community? That my children will struggle to succeed because the quality of their education will decline? Some of today’s racism is lifeboat panic, where people in the lifeboat use the oars that pulled them from the water to bash the hands of others trying to climb out of the water for fear that the lifeboat will capsize. We won’t be able to address racism effectively unless we can talk frankly about our fears.

As white person of agrarian heritage, I am more concerned about returning to the European Middle Ages, that great example of enlightened "Western Civilization" when an entitled, dissolute elite held all the land and its produce and meted it their own justice to peasants who worked for them on their terms for a bare existence and fought their wars to protect their masters' wealth and privilege. That sounds more like where we are heading today, backward. If immigrants with brown, black and yellow skin and different religions can help us stop that regression, I welcome them.

There are really only two issues here: voting and work. Republicans have gone down a road of antagonizing and scapegoating Hispanics while trying to restrict their voting. Several key states, like Texas, Nevada, Florida and Arizona, may soon flip from solid red to purple (Nevada is already) to solid blue in a few election cycles, and a GOP without Texas and/or Florida is not viable in a national election. But Republicans just cannot stop themselves from antagonizing Mexicans and other Hispanics, cannot define themselves in a way that does not denigrate The Other. So they double down, hoping the historical trend of non-voting by Hispanics will keep them out of trouble. I think that ends this year. But the other issue is very important: when it comes to putting in a honest day's work, Hispanics are trouncing working class white men and they know it. Working class white folks do not want the competition, but their employers certainly do. They make more money. But, to the owner class, it is critical that illegal workers stay illegal, to keep wages down, so they play a double game. It will be interesting to see when, and in who's face, this situation blows up.

The bottom line is that the left want's to turn the US into a European-style social democracy. So far they haven't convinced the American people to support that change. Consequently, they want to import people who will. Make no mistake. If they thought migrants from Central America were likely to become Republican voters, forget the wall, they'd insist on landmines.

You are believing lies. I don't know how to reach you through the hedge of falsehoods you've been sold. Can you not see that story doesn't make sense? The same people who said Obama would take your guns--he never even tried--or he would invade Texas and put people in concentration camps--again, trumped-up lies-- are telling you more lies now. They've blown a trillion and a half on tax cuts for their cronies and plan to raid social security and Medicare while you go around wild-eyed over lies. Think about it, for God's sake.

Perhaps Pat B. should also analyze republican policies that have helped to exacerbate the thing he fears most: economic super-recession that set a whole generation of young people back in their earning power and family creation, an opioid crisis fueled by lack of quality health and mental care access that has increased the suicide rate among white men especially, and a systematic gutting of family planning infrastructure nationally to prevent the occasional abortion. Well done Pat and the like-minded.

The myopic view of Buchanan and company highlight a lack of historical understanding and narrow minded self-centeredness. People have been migrating since before recorded history... changing countries' "character — political, social, racial, ethnic" make up. Just to name a few that most folks know.... the Romans on the Middle East and North Africa, the French Normans, Vikings and others on what we now think of as being English" and don't forget the English on the Scots, Irish, India as well as on the native populations in North American through their colonialism along with the French and Spanish. Changing is what we do as humans. We reform communities, cultures, norms, religions and structures in order to evolve, adapt and build better societies. Its an inevitable, unstoppable process and innate to our natures.
Parrhesia (Chicago)
"Make no mistake here, Buchanan is talking about protecting white dominance, white culture, white majorities and white power." And what's wrong with that? He has every right to try and further the best interests of his own race, just as much as black people and hispanics do.

"Ethnomasochism, the taking of pleasure in the dispossession of one’s own ethnic group, is a disease of the heart that never afflicted the America of Andrew Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt, or Dwight Eisenhower. It comes out of what James Burnham called an ‘ideology of Western suicide,’ a belief system that provides a morphine drip for people who have come to accept the inevitability of their departure from history.” Amazing that someone could write this. "Whiteness" is an historically evolving concept. When my Irish Catholic ancestors lived here in the 1830s and 40s such people were depicted in Boston papers as black. My Polish grandparents came around the time of Teddy Roosevelt, and indeed he did not "take pleasure in the dispossession" of WASPs but encouraged them to multiply to make up for Southern and Eastern European fecundity. Now the Irish and Poles, along with Italians, Jews and many others, are considered "white". I don't consider my support for immigrants "enthnomasochism." I consider it my duty as I the "white" descendant of those once considered unutterably foreign.

Demographics are a crucial factor in what makes a country successful. The United States has been successful throughout its history because it is a predominantly white, European-influenced country. It is unlikely it will maintain the same success it has in the past if whites become a minority. Case in point, Japan is likely successful because it is overwhelmingly Japanese. If Japan were to become predominantly Black in the future, do you think it would be irreversibly changed for the better? The answer is no.
Steve Marsh (Boynton Beach Fl)
Ethnocentrics like Charles Blow seem so determined to change the nature of our electorate. They are tenacious on facilitating that plan but defensive to its criticism by many of the decent Americans who see this as a revolutionary and questionable pursuit that has no historical precedence to support any hope for a positive conclusion. I am fascinated that the Democratic leaders now endorsing this plan cannot see themselves as a ringmaster riding on the back of a giant tiger. I guess the lust for eternal power makes the high risk gamble worth the chance. Perhaps a real honest dialogue over the nations problems would be a better way to go, but when opportunists see a sliver of a shot, it is hard to temper them with reason.
Robin Foor (California)
Not really. Whites still own everything as far as the eye can see. California is a state where whites are a minority. So what? Any scientist will tell you that a hybrid gives you a better genetic result than an in-bred genetic line. Hybrids allow genetic variety and allow evolution to occur. The idea that a white skin is the end of evolution for the human race is preposterous. Without genetic variety adaptation fails and extinction occurs. So Pat Buchanan and Donald Trump are arguing for extinction of the human species. If we save the world from global warming the species still has a chance to survive.
Chris Parel (Northern Virginia)
I am white, over 70 and I confess to White Extinction Anxiety. I am anxious that white America won't become extinct. Won't relinquish its selfish, greedy, undemocratic hold on the country. Won't recognize the extraordinary American melting pot we have become. Won't claim the moral and ethical high ground that is our birthright, hamstringing our claim to greatness. Yes, I have White Extincton Anxiety. And it's getting worse with every passing day and outrage.
Ed Watters (San Francisco)
Buchanan asked, "How does the West, America included, stop the flood tide of migrants before it alters forever the political and demographic character of our nations and our civilization?” Two simple ways of achieving that goal: stop bombing the middle east, stop initiating trade pacts* that further impoverish poor countries. * the corporate-media has been portraying pacts such as NAFTA and CAFTA as beneficial to the overall economies of Mexico and Central America, but independent economists make a good argument that they are not. "According to Mexican national statistics, Mexico’s poverty rate of 55.1 percent in 2014 was higher than the poverty rate of 1994. As a result, there were about 20.5 million more Mexicans living below the poverty line as of 2014 (the latest data available) than in 1994. The rest of Latin America saw a drop in poverty that was more than five times as much as that of Mexico: 21 percentage points (from 46 to 25 percent) for the rest of Latin America, versus 3.9 percentage points (from 45.1 to 41.2 percent) for Mexico." http://cepr.net/images/stories/reports/nafta-mexico-update-2017-03.pdf?v=2

Mr. Blow’s analysis is right on target.
Michael (Boston, MA)
Their own reading of history is, as always, selective, privileged and ethnocentric. Also, what goes around comes around. I'm sure the centuries-old civilizations of North and South America that preceded us--to say nothing of the African and Asian civilizations that suffered similar fates--were pretty "anxious" about white foreigners invading their countries, raping their women, stealing their possessions, spreading diseases, enslaving them, imposing a new language, and forcibly converting them to an alien religion (all of which ACTUALLY happened). It certainly was nothing like what these panicked, racist white Americans are claiming is happening to us now. Changes took root--one probably shouldn't refer to it as progress--quickly or slowly, and what had been for centuries eventually was no longer, at least not in any "pure" form. Something new--a kind of hybrid--took its place. Of course this is not an exact comparison, but throughout history civilizations have undergone tremendous changes, either naturally, over time, or cataclysmically, as a result of natural disaster, invasion, or war. We will be no exception, but it strikes me as entirely predictable that those traditionally in power would do whatever they can to retain it for as long as they can. They won't prevail, and with that knowledge we must hold steady and continue to push back if we are to protect the majority of those of us living here and ensure greater global security.
John Howe (Mercer Island, WA)
The white supremacists ought to recognize the value of laws and values which protect racial minorities as whites( like me ) will become another minority soon. Embracing diversity is the best insurance against becoming a discriminated minority.
cdearman (Santa Fe, NM)
This fear of white minority status in the United States is new only because the country went from being a British colony to being a republic. During the colonial period, white elite became concerned over the marriages between white and black endentured servants. With the end of indentureships and the institution of laws against marriage between whites and blacks, the elite thought they could rest easy because the increase of the mulatto population stabilized and miscegenation was illegal. Now with the increase of non-whites increasing in predominantly white societies, the ethnocentric are fearful they will lose their “purity.” Of course, there is no nationality that is “pure.” Moreover, There is no nation that has not benefited from contact with other nations. The fear expressed by the white ethnocentric regarding Western Culture is misplaced. If Islam had not save the wisdom of the Greeks and Romans, Western Culture would have been eviscerated and the Western renaissance would have been setback for ages. We need not fear the loss of Western Culture and technology.

Same here. Until my generation we were all Irish, but my daughter's generation is mostly Vietnamese. My pride in my Irish roots remains undiminished, because it's based on gratitude to my ancestors for their hard work and sacrifices. But I'm also incredibly proud that my family is becoming more American and being American never was about being white--no matter what some white people would like to think. I love the diversity of our nation, and I hope it becomes even more diverse. It makes us stronger. "Ethnomasochism". Hahahah.

Charles, IMHO, Until, at least 3% to 5% of 'we the American people' are so oppressed, suppressed, tyrannized, fed-up-with, aggravated, irritated, looted, and disgusted with what this disguised Empire is doing to us, that we 'call-out', 'shout-out', 'expose' and throw-out Emperor Trump and all the useless lying enablers of this Empire (only playing the 'role' of a democratic government) ---- which should be easy because of the unique 'gift' of Emperor Trump being the most obvious, obnoxious, insane, and dangerous Emperor ever to be installed through our no choice "least worst voting" scam of the last 10 (s)election cycles --- then and only then can 'we the American people' have any chance of achieving what was the original 'American Dream' of a real functional social democracy, instead of the kind of disguised Empire that Gilens, Page, Levitsky, Ziblatt, and "The Post" (in it's 21st century new mast-head slogan "Democracy Dies in Darkness") are crying-out to overcome and peacefully over-throw in an extension to Bernie's 2016 pledge for a "Political Revolution" with an effective and peaceful 2020 "Political Revolution Against Empire" (and Emperor Trump). 2018 is only the warm-up and deselection opportunity, IMHO, to get rid of the dead-wood in both Vichy Parties and prepare for the non-violent 'battle of the century' for the rebirth of 'our' country --- as a country --- which is as the movie title noted "No Country for Old Emperors" or Empire.

You are referring to tribalism, as displayed by every ethnic group in human history, including your own.
terry (washingtonville, new york)
The response to my kids was look at your skin, you are not white, but pink, and look at the skin of an African American, he is not black, but brown. As what Pat Buchanan calls Western civilization makes clear, you start from idiotic premises you end up with idiotic conclusions. The main takeaway from Trump and his lemmings is the insecurity, the belief that only force can save American culture despite 2 centuries of overwhelming evidence through successive waves of immigrants, including Latin Americans, that the Republic does not fall, the new immigrants merge and provide additional difference and strength to the culture for which they gave so much to begin all over again. The danger is not refugees but the apparent belief of many Americans bloviating is sign of toughness. As a veteran I met tough men, and the inverse correlation between toughness and bloviating was almost a perfect 100%, in short, if your record showed you were tough you did not talk about it, and if you were not tough you would continually in many ways attempt to demonstrate you were tough
WT Pennell (Pasco, WA)
This too shall pass. And as someone who already lives in a small city with a majority Mexican population, I have no fears about the future of an America with a majority "non-white" population. It's the same old recycled xenophobia: Blacks, the Irish, Italians, Greeks, eastern Europeans, Catholics in general, Jews, Chinese, etc., etc. can never be "real" Americans.
estevan (Los Angeles)
All these years I thought I counted as American but now I realize my lack of whiteness limited my access towards Americanism.

Charles Blow's explanation is enlightening, with the pieces falling into place. What I find most remarkable is the analogous symptoms with extremist Zionist rhetoric. In contrast with a moderate Zionism compatible the right or refugees to return, with the Jews and Palestinians living together with equal rights, extremist Zionism sees a Palestinian majority living in Israel, not as a blessing, but as Israel's destruction. Instead of "ethnomasochism," extremist Zionists use the less intellectually sounding "self-hating Jew" against moderates. Extremist Zionism has resulted in increasing racism against Arabs and a long oppression of the Palestinians. This should serve as a warning of following the path of the white supremacists in the White House. We must never let that happen in America.

And a lot of white people still wonder why people of color need to be so alert ofntheir surroundings when they’re out doing normal things - going out for dinner, for groceries, to a movie. This is a country where far too may people consider non-whites as a threat, all based on their skin color. Disgusting.

I am pretty sure Pat Buchanan is concerned with un controlled immigration because will likely convert America into a conglomeration of peoples with almost nothing in common "not history, heroes, language, culture, faith, or ancestors." I think that is a fair conversation for an informed citizenry to have. The fact that the NYT's boils these complex issues down to "White Extinction Anxiety" says pretty much all you need to know about the value of this piece.
Marie (Boston)
You mean a conglomeration of peoples like where people have other heroes and don't revere Abraham Lincoln as a hero but rather Robert E Lee? Yes, I can see how that is confusing to those of us who's ancestors fought for freedom and the United States. I mean how can the United States be converted into a place where traitors are revered, traitor monuments are erected, and their battle flag that was raised against the United States is welcomed and revered?

As a black woman born into poverty who -- against every possible structural disadvantage -- managed to graduate from college, establish a lucrative career, and send my own child to fine private schools, you know I want to say to these anxious whites? WOMP-WOMP. White people conquered the West... until they didn't. Time's up.
Lee Harrison (Albany / Kew Gardens)
The pitiful thing is that it's the loser whites who act like this. LBJ got it exactly right., the only thing they have going for them is being white -- as in better than others because that's all they've got. White people who aren't losers, and that includes those who built western civilization, are generally pretty happy to have anybody who is trying to make things better on their side ... welcome to the party, as long as you help with putting it on and cleaning up afterwards!

The ignorance, the cowardice, the weakness speaks of the dangers of inbreeding. If white is so terrific, so amazing, why would it be vulnerable to competition from any other group.

Charles sure inspired all the crazies today. That said, a few points: -democrats should not support 100% open borders, every country deserves to keep their sovereignty intact. Just ask new Zealand if they will accept fat old white americans as immigrants. - Charles misses the point that the background of many immigrants has a way of disappearing over time. They marry people of other religions, ethic background, cultures and pretty soon they love going to Greek Festivals but they don't identify as Greek. So "minority" stops being meaningful - Big business owners, mostly right wing repubs, have been largely responsible for the large influx of illegal hispanics over the last 40 years--- by hiring them, by participating in their illegal status. -The biggest mistake our culture has made in the last 40 years has been in not making it easy and accessible for people who move here to learn English. The public schools exacerbated this by offering bilingual education, which has had the result of holding immigrants and their kids behind. - white people-- nobody is demanding tht you make friends with anyone you don't want to, much less marry them! - Our country has benefited over its history from the hard work of immigrants, and our culture has expanded by what they have brought to us: sushi & falafels, soccer & cricket, foreign language words like salut & RSVP. Let's not be so scared of "the other."
Nreb (La La Land)
Charles, you have such a problem with the people who created the modern world. Perhaps you should understand that there are many who do not want to see this end. Or, perhaps Rap will be more suitable for the future? NAW!

EastCoast25 (Massachusetts)
With all due respect to you Charles, this line of thinking is simplistic. There are multi-faceted reasons why we are where we are today and while 'white extinction anxiety' may be some of it, it's hardly the only reason for our current milieu. Many could argue that the NYT columnists have been very disconnected from the systemic problems in our country, except the ones they're only willing to see and embrace. This polarization of 'I'm right, you're wrong, you believe in immigration reform? Oh you must be a racist... isn't moving us forward as a culture and a society. It's tearing us apart. This country was founded on the idea of freedom & compromise around what those freedoms mean. We are flawed human beings that are always in the process of forming a more perfect union. We need articles from this paper to bring the country together rather that contribute to the process of pulling us apart. Headlines like this pull us apart.
Adam (Boston)
Here's what I think both sides are missing in this debate: Are we going to be an apartheid-like society, with a majority of poor people of color? Look at the current statistics on black and Hispanic average wealth compared to whites, the rates of children being raised in single parent households, high school graduation rates, etc. There is an assumption on the part of middle- or upper-class liberals that a majority-minority country might look a lot like the middle-class American current society, but with more brown and black faces. This is assuming a lot about the coming of a socioeconomic revolution simply due to demographic change. Isn't it much more likely, rather, that wealth, power, and social mobility would remain concentrated in certain segments of the white plurality? This would result in a society that is overall poorer, less educated, more stratified. Can liberals guide the country to a positive, racially integrated future? Or will the conservative backlash prevail?
TMart (MD)
Patrick Buchanan has every right to promote the benefits of Anglo Saxon culture; it is what this great country was founded on and has provided opportunities unimagined for hundreds of millions of desperate people. That he is demonized shows that the culture that he supports is the one that radical leftists have determined is uniquely evil and must be abolished.
Jay Sonoma (Central OR)
Whites came to be due to evolution one way or another in northern climes when tribalism and climate caused it to happen. Whites as we know them will disappear over time because the environment of breeding has changed to mix people from all over the world. To change this trend by force is challenging natural evolution, and perhaps toying with God's plan as much does as abortion, no?
Bubo (Virginia)
Buchanan is a warmonger who always needs an existential threat in his rearview mirror. He wants us to defensively posture ourselves, as if against the Soviets, against 'something' all the time. The 'what' in his mind is not important; having a threat to holler and fear over is the point. It makes him look and sound perpetually terrified.
Abbott Hall (Westfield, NJ)
In fact, the opposite is true. Buchanan represents the non military interventionists on the right and is the political heir to people like Sen. Robert Taft. Read some history and you will discover that most of the right was opposed to war and military intervention. It was the Democratic party that led the USA into WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. However both parties are guilty of waging war in the Middle East.
Gary Taustine (NYC)
I’m not a fan of Pat Buchanan because I find commentary intended to inflame racial animosity unhelpful and dangerous. It’s the same reason I’m not a fan of Mr. Blow. Both Buchanan and Blow showcase the worst ideas the other side has to offer and present them as the opinions of half the country. Buchanan blames everything on race and Blow blames everything on racism. Their ideas are bigoted and prejudicial. There’s plenty of hatred in this country, but by and large most of us are getting along just fine, and we’d get along even better were it not for the media’s tireless effort to make every confrontation and disagreement between caucasians and people of color into an issue of racism.
Marshall Doris (Concord, CA)
The point should be, but often isn’t, that “whiteness” is only a perceived physical difference, not a real one. People are people. That’s it. The real differences that separate people are usually cultural, not physical, so that’s the change that is frightening “white” Americans. But the tenacity of American culture is, for good or bad, not that delicate: it almost always wins. Vestiges of Italian, or Irish, or Armenian, or whichever group used to scare “white” (that is the ones who have been here a little longer) Americans in the past linger on, but they have been largely subsumed by and modified to become part of our melting pot. As the narrator of The Big Lebowski reminds us, “The Dude abides.” Everyone needs to relax, sip a White Russian, and develop a little perspective.
Terry (California)
Ask most that don’t get white privilege if they would choose to be of color instead, because according to their argument there’s no advantage to being white - guessing NOPE.
ChrisJ (Canada)
The biggest lie - the “white” lie - is the elision of ideas and principles with DNA. There is nothing inherently white about democracy, rule of law, human rights. Culture, for good or ill, is not carried in our genes. The second biggest lie - another “white” lie - is that there exists some racial/genetic purity that magically follows shifting ideals of whiteness. DNA testing, one hopes, could put this tired idea to rest.
Roberto Muina (Palm Coast, FL)
No wonder this is happening.Salaries have been stagnant for many years now,and of course families know they cannot have children at all in some circumstances, let alone having 5 or 6 kids. That explains the difference in births between whites and other racial groups, that keep having lots of kids regardless. For those groups many kids is the rule for their own survival and they don't care about the money it cost to raise them.Call them irresponsible, but they are gaining on he white population.
Seb Williams (Orlando, FL)
The fun part is that it's the party of the 80-hour workweek, the $7 minimum wage, of bank bailouts and home foreclosures that is so anxious about white people not popping out enough babies. Why are they so worried about future white Americans when current white Infinite growth with finite resources is insanity, it's impossible, and it's the central tenant of capitalism.
Tiger shark (Morristown)
Race is identity. The US has thrived on the false notion that our “shared ideals” made us unique. It has worked because white values have prevailed in a white majority racial hierarchy. Now it’s up for grabs because whites face minority status and the catastrophic loss of status and influence. The outcome of this struggle will result in the re-establishment of white control or the emergence of a new top dog. This is how nature works.
Eraven (NJ)
White Generation fears are unfounded. The new generation will get to know and mingle with the non white population without even realizing it. Look at India. You can find the whitest off the white and the darkest of the dark, many times in the same family. There are always some issues but nothing threatening the civilization as Mr Buchanan envisages. But if you fight it the civilization will certainly be threatened. Uncivility cannot defend civilization.

A Reconquista? No way, Jose! Jose had a 14-year run as the most popular boys’ name in Texas, but has steadily fallen since 2010 to where it is barely in the top 10. Juan was never as popular, but has seen a similar decline from as high as number 7 all the way to place 37 at last report. Unless we apply the notorious one-drop rule to ethnicity, the majority-minority society is never going to happen, despite what the fearmongers on the right and the ethnic cheerleaders on the left claim. The American mainstream is as seductive and encompassing as ever.

Ive been looking at this problem - well for white guys, of which Im one, but I dont see the issue like Trump and Klan do - Ive been looking at this dilution of the Whites in the US, and elsewhere as sort of a reversal race comeuppance. White males from Europe went out and infiltrated other lands where the people were not white, and with little care, nearly destroyed every last one of them. Put the natives in bondage, forced them to adopt "white-man ways", literally destroyed native cultures, brought them disease, etc. Exploited their resources, left damaged environments, crushing governments, and when forced to leave after centuries of oppression - left behind corrupt stand-ins who would remain agreeable to their former white masters. The legacy of which lingers 'round the world. So now that many of these former colonies are still dysfunctioning - aided by the Wests apathy - their peoples are fleeing to where they know opportunity and safety is greater. They are heading to the places that have long been involved in their homelands earliest exploitation. The US has been messing around in Central and South America for a long time, been on the wrong side of local uprisings, and supported anti-communist despots. (only to see failure after failure) So here come their people. People are fleeing our, the Wests legacy in their homelands. Same in the Middle East. Europeans been long messing around there and are now reaping their ultimate rewards. Refugees en masse. Comeuppance.

“First, for the first time since the Census Bureau has released these annual statistics, they show an absolute decline in the nation’s white non-Hispanic population — accelerating a phenomenon that was not projected to occur until the next decade.” ___ To the Buchanan, Limbaugh and Trump bottom dwellers, there's always Canada. Places like NYC, LA, Chicago, Houston, San Fran, San Jose, Philly, Austin embrace the diversity of culture.

A white minority United States can't happen soon enough. Hopefully, the resulting majority will be kinder and gentler than we have been.
jaco (Nevada)
Kinder and gentler than say Africa or South America from where so many are trying to escape? Where so many live in famine and poverty? You may wish for the return of the white majority.
Treadmill (UWS)
The new majority leaders probably will NOT be as nice...Why should they? They will have no compunction to be fair...there in lays the irony...perhaps we should stick with the (white) devils we know, at least they have some historical motivation to be fair...whereas new majority leaders could be righteously unfair

Too bad for the dwindling anglos, crossbreeding nearly always produces better individuals than inbreeding. I've been wanting to fundamentally change the USA all 72 of my years and now I can actually see it coming in a great blue backlash against conservative oligarchy.

Racial animus is the weirdest thing. It’s like Irish Setters disdaining Pugs or Poodles turning their snoots up at Chihuahuas —and all of them shunning the mutts. Seriously, how did humans become so hateful against their own species? This planet is one big dog park, we should learn to play well together and realize we are all essentially the same in spite of different outward appearances. My mutt comes from the same stock as your purebred: deal with it.

Pat is just worried that white people will be assigned to protected reserves someday by the influx of people not native to this country. Reserves where their rights, lifestyles and religions will be taken from them. Their children will be re-educated. Even these reserves will be violated if it is economically beneficial to the new majority. Ater all that damage is done, maybe the new majority will let the white people open casinos. RAW

Rather than "white extinction anxiety" why not "racism extinction anxiety"? Pat Buchanan or any other Trumpster looking at Bill Clinton would call him "white" but they'd be mistaken if they thought that Bill Clinton fears extinction and voted for Trump, wouldn't they? --Likewise for the millions of other "whites" who didn't vote for Trump.

I am a first-generation American citizen of Asian descent. I was attracted to America for its political and economic freedoms and for the equal treatment it accorded everyone before its laws. After college, I have had offers of better-paying positions in the Middle East. I had no difficulty in rejecting those offers. Kuwait I thought was oppressive and highly discriminatory against non-natives. Dubai seemed relatively more liberal but there too, I found that a foreigner has to put up with certain basic disadvantages in dealings with the native population. In the over 50 years that I have lived in the US, I have not found any such disadvantages. Here and there, there have been instances where I felt I was not treated properly, but then there were just as many instances where I was treated more favorably. An elderly white judge who administered me the oath of citizenship 50 years ago advised that I do not let anyone ever make me feel a second-class citizen simply because I was not born in the US. Those words have echoed and re-echoed in my head through all these years. Obviously, for personal reasons, if for nothing else, I cannot be for ill-treatment of any human being within the US. At the same time, I also look with apprehensions the latter-day foreign imported faiths and cultures that have the potential of messing up our existing public policy, public discourse, and legal system. For the same reasons, I resent what the Trump administration is now doing to our country.

"How does the West, America included, stop the flood tide of migrants before it alters forever the political and demographic character of our nations and our civilization?” Well, Pat, it doesn't. The most recent wave of immigrants will alter our nation as surely as did the Germans and Irish who came in the 19th century, the Italians and Jews who came in the early 20th century, and all those who followed. And just like them, the more recent immigrants from Asia and Latin America will make our country stronger and more vital. Clearly, this notion of cultural purity is a misreading of American history. Just as clearly, it is an expression of white nationalism, which has always been the cornerstone of white supremacist philosophy and politics. Kudos to Mr. Blow for saying so (again) in such direct terms.
Patrise Henkel (Southern Maryland)
I once asked my grandfather, a first generation Czech-American, why he and his siblings didn't teach his kids and grandkids the Czech language. He could sing a few songs and recite some phrases, but he was emphatic that his parents, immigrants who had come across the sea to the country of hope, were adamant that they leave the past behind. This always made me a bit sad, but it was how so many of my generation (Born mid 50s) became the 'melting pot.' Now it's time for Pat Buchanan to let go of the past. White dominance is all over but the shouting. Anyway, I'm not white, I'm Pantone 74-7C.
Jack Shultz (Pointe Claire Que. Canada)
Earlier today I saw a news scroll that read that Trump had told his advisors that “my people love the separation of migrant families.” The descent into the moral swamp continues apace. Meanwhile Harley-Davison is closing its production in Wisconsin and moving to Thailand and Iowa soybean farmers watch as the price of their crops drops as the Chinese retaliate against US tariffs.

All true. I am an older white woman and I have to say, nothing frightens me more than white power. My only anxiety about white extinction is it's not happening fast enough. I thought we had made some progress over the last 60 years of struggle. Now I'm just depressed. The South has risen again and it is all across the land. I always knew there were some really terrible people, but I never imagined there were so many of them. It's the saddest thing I've ever seen, first hand. Thank you for soldiering on Mr Blow.
Dan Locker (Brooklyn)
I am sorry but I just can't agree with Charles on this. Many white people voted for Obama but Charles with his bias in full view seems to forget this. We can all live together and prosper but it is those who push identity politics that are creating a very dangerous environment so that they can gain. Charles makes his money by being inflammatory and breaking us apart instead of using his talents to bring us together. That about sums it up. Look to who has to gain!
Ms. Bear (Northern California)
Charles Blow isn't talking about all white people--just white racists.

Don't forget who owns and controls most of the capital in the U.S. - older white men. Tjat is not likely to change anytime soon. That goes for the media, real estate, banking and stocks. And campaign contributions and party control. Don't forget police and the legal system, military and high office. That will last no matter what happens. That's what power is very good at - preserving itself!

The Roman Empire disappeared as a political entity simply because it had conquered too much territory to defend with an "Italians only" military establishment. As an adjunct of its attempts to "Romanize" its conquered territories, it increasingly came to rely on non-Italians to do the Empire's fighting until, eventually, Germanic forces - mainly the Goths - were running the show. But what a surprise! The Empire is gone but Italy is still there, populated by people who are called Italian and proud of it. Are they concerned that a once "white" peninsula now has a thoroughly mixed populace - original Latins, Greeks, Moors, Lombards, Teutons, Visigoths, Ostrogoths and goth knows what-all? Not really. They think of themselves as Italians, one and all.

Let' see : guess if we wait long enough, the same thing may happen to Western Civilization ?

Buchanan is 79, Trump 72. As an old white woman, now 73, I say to them, Is there anything more repellant than old age unadorned by wisdom? Even my father, an overt racist who lived to be 100, was able in the closing years of his life to embrace the four beautiful multi-racial great-grandchildren given to him by three of his grandsons—two part Korean, one part Haitian, and one part Mexican. My father was wise enough to realize that the future belongs to the young.
John (Greenville, ME)
I don't have time to scroll down through the 1599 posts (so far) to Mr Blow's thoughtful and incisive essay, but I do hope someone has pointed out the rampant hypocrisy of Mr Buchanan's vile grumblings. As a white person, Mr B should be lamenting what the European invasion of North and South America did to the real Americans. And if he had a deeper than skin deep (intended) perspective on human history, he might realize that movements of populations around the globe has been a constant since humans left Africa. What he fears now (and makes a living peddling) is not new and not threatening. Learn about other cultures and peoples, love others and embrace them as you would your own and maybe you won't be so scared. Globalization is here to stay. Get with it! And in the meanwhile, remember that Western Civilization is a set of ideas, ideals, and institutions, not a race. No matter how we define it Western Civilization has proved durable, resilient, and evolving through many trials and challenges and still continues to inspire. What Mr. Buchanan should really fear is our civilization's most recent enemy, not powerless asylum-seekers, but powerful politicians all too willing to embrace fascism.
Becky O'Malley (Berkeley)
It's ironic that Buchanan sees himself as the spokesman for white supremacy. When I was growing up in the 1950s with an Anglo-Saxon birth name, some referred to his ethnic group derogatorily as "Micks". He should read the book "How the Irish Became White" to get the picture. My married name is Irish, and the next generation of my extended family has a great mix of colors, ethnicities and religions. We're not worried about extinction.
Ken Harper (Brewster NY)
Echos of every single movement to slow immigration...anti-Italian, anti-Irish, anti-Catholic, anti-Chinese...the people who espouse these sentiments never seem to learn the lessons of history. It was wrong 150 years, it's wrong now and it has been proven so. We're still here...despite the endless chorus of doomsayers. What these people fail to grasp is that it is our values that will see us through - not the color of our skin, not the religion we practice, not the language we speak and not the culture and traditions we all brought to this country with us.
Manuel Lucero (Albuquerque)
Fear of being the minority in your own country is what drives people to Trump. The idea that America won't be white anymore is repugnant to his base. Look at the crowds at his rallies we now see fewer and fewer woman, and people of color, if there were large numbers there to start with. Remember the often times quoted shout out by the president, "where's my black, there he is, isn't it beautiful". The idea that we as people of color would treat others as we were treated is ludicrous I thought, until this weekend. The Red Hen and Sanders situation shouldn't have happened. We, are better than that. Mrs. Obama said it best, "when they go low, we go high" That will undercut the republicans, that will drown out the hate of the right. Its hard to turn the other cheek, but it always works.
Curzon Ferris (SW United States)
I'm not so sure that turning the other cheek always works. Just as I'm not so sure that all bullies are cowards. The meek may inherit the Earth, but it will be no victory if the Earth is a radioactive cinder.
ACM (Palo Alto, CA)
Manuel, Always works? Really? That's what Hillary did . . . and Trump WON. People should be free to exercise their First Amendment right. The Owner of the Red Hen was completely within her right to kick Trump Lap Dog Sanders out. That IS us being better than Trump Supporters. People who work for the Government are fair game. If it were 1943 and you owned restaurant in Albuquerque, you'd allow that human murderer to remain just to take the so-called "high road"? And what would that accomplish besides giving yourself a false sense of sanctimony?
Caded (Sunny Side of the Bay)
The diversity of immigrants has given this country many good things, not the least of which is a much better choice of restaurants.

“The existential question, however, thus remains: How does the West, America included, stop the flood tide of migrants before it alters forever the political and demographic character of our nations and our civilization?” Dedicating his voice to support for the position that we are not (by God or government) equal, can NEVER live together and some MUST be more entitled than others based on their race, you can pretty well see that Buchanan's future holds little more than anger and violence. Should it begin to appear that isn't the case, work can be done to insure it is. After all, this is what make Buchanan's America great. MAGA MAGA MAGA
Curzon Ferris (SW United States)
It's time to reconsider the secession of confederate-sympathetic states from the Union. I propose that two constitutional conventions be convened, one for the Union states and one for the confederacy. The Union convention can deal with revitalizing our constitution for issues like guns and abortion and elections and court functions, etc. The confederate convention can deal with pressing issues like legalizing slavery, unfettered states rights, how to organize the military, women's rights, etc. Details can be ironed out and fleshed out by others, but it is absolutely necessary that we divest ourselves of the troglodyte citizens who are infesting and destroying our beautiful Democracy.
Oy! (New York)
The idea that the entirety of the Left argues for open borders is ridiculous. Many of us argue not for open borders, but for humane ones. What's wrong with due process and a possible path toward citizenship for families seeking asylum from drug cartels and other murderous vermin? If whiteness is threatened by even this fundamental an ethic, then it deserves to be diluted. Mr. Blow is spot on about Mr. Buchanan's racial paranoia. It's clear that Mr. Buchanan who is confused about who the "invaders" are: People seeking refuge from the Northern Triangle--brace yourself, Pat--are Western! They speak a Romance language and are overwhelmingly Catholic, if that matters to you--and they also were in the West long before they had or were those things. (Who promised to build walls for them when the Spanish colonists arrived, I wonder?) But then, denying even this historical fact was just one more way of demonizing by defamiliarizing them, wasn't it? If you want to ameliorate this US-induced crisis, then plutocrats, empty your wallets! Invest in Mexico and the rest of Central America, force partnerships with our government to work diligently with police forces there to rid the region of the cartels, and advise in renegotiating trade agreements so that workers there can have better living wages and a chance at building better infrastructures, both material and social. Then you'll start preserving something far more precious--a greater humanity.
Marty (San Ramon, CA)
Pat better get used to it. No wall is going to stop a rising tide.

While most people of all races would find Buchanan's attempt to appeal to nativism disgusting, we should not let the worst among us obscure debates about our future and the kind of nation we might become. The ugly nativism that arose in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th century was essentially an effort to pull up the welcome mat and stop people who were "different" from entering. The Irish, the Italians, jews and many other groups were all subjected to harassment and some exclusion for decades, but, gradually, those prejudices faded to be far less important. Change is difficult, but people adjusted. Consider this: a nation is essentially an economic, political and social entity designed to forward and protect a particular culture, a way of life. Millions have died around the world fighting for economic survival or supremacy. A nation is basically a conspiracy of common interests rooted in the traditions, practices and the legal/political system of that country. It is, by its very nature, intended to be somewhat exclusionary. Our culture includes Hispanics and dozens of other groups classified by ethnicity. They are every bit a part of America as the whitest rich kid growing up in a million dollar house. It is completely reasonable, however, to have a debate about how much immigration is healthy, in the total sense, for a nation. The first time I heard of the idea of a Mexican "invasion" to change America was from a noted Hispanic intellectual more than 20 yrs. ago
DougTerry.us (Maryland/Metro DC area)
Here is the point I was making above more succinctly: we are going to have to have a serious national debate about how many immigrants the nation can reasonably absorb. Raising this concern is not the nativism of the 1920s. While the nature of "the American experiment" will surely be changed, sometimes for the better, by immigrants, we have to bear in mind how much change at what pace the nation can endure and still keep its central character and ideals embodied in our founding documents and constitution. We will have to ask ourselves uncomfortable questions: are immigrants coming here now to become completely part of the American way of life or are a majority intent on preserving their home nation's culture and transplanting it here? (We are a mixture of many cultures now, almost all contributing to a richer way of life for the native born.) Do some groups of immigrants have an embedded hostility to democracy and other American institutions?
Tim Nelson (Seattle)
Indeed Charles, it is no more complicated than that. White extinction anxiety is at the root of the madness of the Republican party and its rabid white adherents. It is an anxiety that is willing to accept all manner of non-democratic means to achieve its goal of restoring the Antebellum South as the correct model for 21st century America. Prevent as many voters as possible from voting who aren't obvious Republican voters? No problem. Create gut-wrenching anti-family displays at the border in order to stop potential immigrants in their tracks? No problem. Destroy public education through underfunding because educated voters are harder to control? Check. Use religion, ethnicity and fear as wedges to divide Americans from their true interests. They're on it! As a white American I shake my head in disgust at this quixotic effort to reclaim the fictional better times. The best days are ahead when we reassert our founding values for all people without fear that one group will lose out in the process. (Except, of course, for rich, far-right, white oligarchs, whose influence will inevitably fade.)
Bradley Bleck (Spokane, WA)
Wow, many of my white brothers and sisters sure are a fragile lot. If we whites, as a group, were as magnanimous as we tend to think we are, we have nothing to be concerned about. A big if for sure.
Unworthy Servant (Long Island NY)
The key phrase is "natural decrease". No immigrant of any nationality or race forced a native-born white woman to have either a small family or no children. White non-H. women made that free choice after the Pill was approved, and the first iteration of feminism took hold in our culture. The roots of the demographic shift are not of recent origin, only the results are recent. No longer is the paradigm the working husband and the homemaker wife in the tract home. Demonizing Hispanics for our demographic change ignores these realities. But for the Trump brigade facts are irrelevant. Instead there is the age-old search for scapegoats. The traditional scapegoats of the far right are off the table for Trump for obvious reasons (See Ivanka, Jared, Miller et. al.). So, notwithstanding the alleged faithful Catholicism of Gen. Kelly, Bannon and others in D.T.'s circle, it is brown-skinned Latinos, most of the Church of Rome who now fit the role of the despised "other". How did it come to this in our country?
Trumpkin Of Russia 🇷🇺 (Madison, Wi)
After wages stagnated in the 1980s choosing to have lots of kids while husband and wife both work one or more jobs to get by is a poor choice and many are smart enough not to do that. Wealthy white evangelicals and Mormons being the common exception
Ranlee (Idaho Falls, ID)
Race, culture, religion, education, politics and values within each of these comprise to a great extinct who we are as a country. Yes our demographics are changing. Outcomes and opinions are varied on the direction we are trending. We find as of late that race is in the forefront of all discussions followed by politics with very little attention to the other three core compositions. With access the Hispanic population has grown much faster then other races in our country accelerating their effect for good or bad. The discussion should center on balance of immigrants from around the world that made us who we are today. The "White" educated birth rates are extremely low and over time are changing the demographics on their own. Acknowledging they are changing is worth noting but balancing the melting pot would seem to be prudent as well. I have listened to Charles on CNN more times then I can recall and his views are always interesting but for me somewhat predictable. I began watching CNN at its inception and to me it was the "Gold Standard" . Over the last 10-15 years it is not my single source any longer. Too much of the news has become commentary and focused on negative, dividing, damaging perspectives that are over analyzed in the 24 hr news cycle until they actually become a created story. If news outlets would spend just 20% of its influence to stories that brought us together, it would go a long way to help our country remain the leader of the world.
Sorka (Atlanta GA)
I have even heard liberal friends whisper their concerns about the country's changing demographics, albeit seasoned with some guilt for having these feelings. So don't assume it's only Republicans who say such things. You have to listen more closely to these coded comments in private conversations.
Tom (Vancouver Island, BC)
Moral arguments aside, it seems to me that a large part of dynamic of this "problem" stems from a paradox of our modern economy. Consider: 1) Western economies tend towards consistently lower birthrates, as the realities facing workers make having children a fiscal liability (as opposed to agrarian societies where children are a fiscal asset). 2) These same economies are predicated on constant growth to ensure return on capital, which requires ever more workers and consumers to drive that growth. In the absence of natural population growth that these economies suppress (see point 1), immigration is necessary to ensure returns for owners of capital . From this view, you can have growth-based capitalism, or you can maintain "demographic stability" of your traditional population. You can't have both.
John LeBaron (MA)
As Pat Buchanan mused, "How does the West, America included, stop the flood tide of migrants before it alters forever the political and demographic character of our nations and our civilization?" I suppose that Native Americans have been puzzling over this conundrum for several centuries.
K. Corbin (Detroit)
“It’s working!” Those are the words spoken by the upper class, as they high-five one another and laugh that the middle and working-class are fighting amongst themselves, rather than observing the outrageous giveaways that have benefited the wealthy. For more than a generation the wealthy have been able to defeat any consideration of policies that work for the benefit of the country as a whole. Income disparity is widening and all anybody wants to talk about is race relations and immigration. There is plenty to go around for all on this planet. It doesn’t happen, because we are too easily divided and conquered. How about a colunn or two about class distinctions, rather than the old playbook? The media is perpetuating outrageous inequality.
Brian Hope (PA)
And yet none of the people throwing their arms up at poor immigrants coming to this country in search of a better life (which in many ways is the most "American" thing to do) even bat an eyelash at wealthier immigrants--many of whom do not plan to stay long-term, or still maintain significant business and political ties in their home country. Without making any blanket statements, I would only point out the wealthy Russians who have gotten very involved in British politics (having been very involved with the politicians backing Brexit), while maintaining close ties with the Kremlin; or the supposed political and surveillance activities of Chinese students at American universities. More scrutiny would likely show foreign money involvement in "Super PACs" and other "dark money" political organizations (perhaps even stoking the fears that are giving rise to the very debate in this article), which is potentially very dangerous. If people want to come here and work to build a better life for their families, and become "American" (loosely defined, no litmus tests, except being supportive of our democracy, the rule of law, our Constitution and all of the rights it enshrines), then we should welcome them with open arms (especially if we want to avoid a Japan-style economic stagnation). We should, however, be wary of those that come bearing money and gifts, but that may be trying to influence our country for the benefit of their home countries.
Steven S. (Forest hills)
Thank you for saying that and is a sentiment someone once taught me. Just because Greeks come bearing gifts doesn't mean it's the best outcome for Troy. But sadly people prefer Chinese millionaires buying homes up in California or Russian millionaires investing in properties in Brooklyn with no intention of supporting or helping any American community improve.
Tom Hayden (Minneapolis)
I can only see the mixing of diverse people as a blessing and a solution to many of our problems, not at all a problem. Now climate change and wealth disparity: BIG problems.
CitizenJ’ (New York City)
Buchanan is an easy target. But even people who might have a reasonable basis for wanting to limit immigration are automatically accused of being dishonest versions of Buchanan. It’s a mistake, politically, to think the issue is that simple.
SP (CA)
I immigrated from a populous country. The one thing we have to watch for is overpopulation. That is the killer. It does not matter whether we are black, white, blue, green or yellow; it is overpopulation that kills a country. We need to keep an eye on that, even if we have to put restrictions on the number of children any couple can have. An ecosystem (social, environmental, economic) can take small hits any number of times, but it cannot handle big hits that come from overpopulation.
Diane Kropelnitski (Grand Blanc, MI)
"And he chided any white person who might cheer this nation’s changing demographics:" Buchanan can chide me all he wants because "I don't care and neither should u." Growing up in a middle and upper middle class suburb I was exposed to basically an all-white population in and out of school. After leaving my childhood home and returning 25+ years later, I was totally amazed at how racially diverse the community had become. What was even more striking was the growth that occurred while still maintaining mostly middle class and upper and wealthy residents. There are no ghettos in my town. There's a great public school system that caters to all levels of class and ethnicity. No sir, Mr. Buchanan I strongly and emphatically disagree with your assessment. Our community is living proof that diversity flourishes and myopic nationalism flounders.
Redsoxshel (USA)
Buchanan's (and those like him) underlying premise is that the residents of third world countries don't deserve to live in the west. They are not good enough to live in the west and thus must stay in their designated part of the world. This segregation of the "right" and "wrong" kind of people into their separate geographic places, is the plot of every distopian novel ever written. It is also an anethma to our Declaration, our Constitution and to the Bible he loves to thump.
Pecos 45 (Dallas, TX)
I personally cannot understand Buchanan/Trump/George Wallace's point of view. Do they not see that the "hybridization" of America is a good thing? It produced Alexander Hamilton, Barak Obama, Meagan Mahrkle and many other talented individuals. If Trump and his ilk are so concerned about the "decline of whiteness" they should learn to get along with minorities so when they assume power they won't take it out on the remaining whites. Ever think about that?
A. Davey (Portland)
I don't know what's worse: racism expressed in its rawest form or racism cloaked in high-falutin' prose in the style of Pat Buchanan. As long as the institutions of American constitutional democracy remain strong, and as long as we continue to hold the values rooted in the Constitution, the "race," ethnicity or national origin of people who call themselves American doesn't matter. Unfortunately, Donald Trump and his minions, together with the Republicans in Congress, are eroding American institutions and values every day. Trump and his people are waging a war on the separation of powers and on the Bill of Rights. They're also fomenting racist animus by creating a migrant crisis where none exists. The Republican-dominated Congress has forgotten that it is a co-equal branch of government with constitutional obligations separate from those of the Executive Branch. Instead, Congress is acting as it were just another dysfunctional arm of the Trump administration. That is the price of handing the nation's wealth to the oligarchy though tax cuts that must be defended at all costs. This deplorable state of affairs may in fact deter immigration, albeit unintentionally. Unless the Democratic Party regains control of one or both houses of Congress and, eventually, the White House, would-immigrants will set their sights on other destinations because the American institutions and values that once drew people to these shores will have ceased to exist.
Robert Stewart (Chantilly, Virginia)
The historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., was recently quoted by Jon Meacham, in Meachan's most recent book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, as saying: “The genius of America lies in its capacity to forge a single nation from peoples of remarkably diverse racial, religious, and ethnic origins…" Although Buchanan obviously believes that "a loss of white primacy becomes a loss of American identity," he is clearly wrong, and he is manifesting his ignorance of American history and the ethos that has formed our nation. The same could be said of Donald Trump, the White House occupant that daily mediates malice and mendacity via tweets.

Just so I have it right: Mr Blow can explicitly advocate for his (what he believes to be) people for 25 years, while Mr Buchanan may never advocate for (what he believes to be) his people? Just want to get the story straight...
Truthiness (New York)
How about we not advocate by color?
Marie (Boston)
I suppose after Mr. Blow's people enslaves Mr. Buchanan's people, represses their rights, officially shoots them with impunity, then your factious question regarding suffering of Mr. Buchanan's people would have some merit.
NLG (Stamford CT)
The question isn't 'whiteness', which as we all know is an illusion. The question is the Enlightenment and its values, an essential part of European culture. This isn't hard, once the noise is removed. By pure good luck, Europe went from an irrelevant backwater to the center of humanity, after stumbling upon not one but, very improbably, two of the most recent human advances, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The scientific and moral insights provided by these two advances are immense and should be cherished by all humanity, to whom of course they belong; Europeans were just by pure chance the (figurative) place where, this time, lightning struck, not once but twice. It is fashionable today to disparage European culture, most often, for slavery. This is poppycock. Europeans didn't invent the evil of slavery, although they benefited from the free labor it provided. However, Brazil imported far more African slaves, and for longer, than the US, and it got Brazil comparatively nowhere. Canada ended slavery in 1833, but prospered. The slave markets of Istanbul were still running in 1908, doing a brisk business, including in white slaves, yet the Ottoman Empire collapsed. There's nothing bad, and a lot great, about being white, or black or brown. What matters is values, ethics, knowledge and skill. The European Enlightenment was the last great human advance in these four; immigrants who share these values are always welcome.
Jack Lewis (Chicago)
Quite simply: this is the price paid by a culture that, at some point, decided to value skin over ideas.
Paul (NYC)
I would like to see someone ask Buchanan what would be so bad if "the political and demographic character of our nations and our civilization" were "altered forever," whether by reason of an influx of migrants or by the natural evolution of culture and society (which are probably not two separate phenomena). I agree that it comes down to protection of whiteness (which means predominantly heterosexual, (fake) Christian, male whiteness), but what would Buchanan and his ilk say? How would he respond to the view that it's really okay with many of us, including many white people, for the country to change?
TMart (MD)
He would say he disagrees and many tens of millions are with him. that's the cultural war he spoke of 25 years ago
Paul (NYC)
Certainly there are millions who agree with him. But there would be nothing for him to disagree with in the dialogue I'm imagining. It would be a simple, open-ended question--what would be bad in his view about the "character of our nations and our civilization" being "altered forever"? I'd like to hear him articulate that. His response could shape how those of us who oppose his view take action against it. As it is, all we usually get is (justifiable) condemnation of his view, but not anything substantive to work with.

I am not a "Trumpite", but NO, it is NOT simply "racism" that makes so many of us, otherwise liberal, people sympathetic to his attempts to CONTROL immigration. We are terrified, not of simply losing "white" political power, but of the reasonably predictable and dramatic impact of a growing, uncontrolled and eventually uncontrollable, flood of refugees from so many dis-functional, corrupt and violent countries. Despite our grief for (and fear of) these people, we KNOW that the problems of this horrible world cannot be improved simultaneously across that world, but only one country at at time, and by preserving the better places from poverty and violence, while setting an example for the rest. This can only be done if we are able to draw protective "rings", i.e. borders, that enclose, and thus must also exclude and thus control.

Great article. Tribalism is innate to human beings. North Western Europe and North America invented a Tribe - made of all those with Lily White skins, and without even a sixteenth part of non white ancestry. This tribe contributed a lot to the world - a scientific temper which led to more progress in the last 500 years than in the 5000 before that. It also caused great harm - colonialism, genocide and racism. But like all tribes, it is an artificial construct. Folks who live in the cities of America have constructed their own tribes, where colour or religion don’t matter, but adherence to values such as tolerance does. But for folks in small town America, this means that their own tribe is losing dominance. When liberal columnists talk of America becoming majority non white with glee, the small town white recognises that his tribe is probably already a minority - for urban liberal whites belong to a completely different tribe from him. Hence the fear of extinction, and the reaction by voting for Trump. Brexit is a similar reaction, as does the election of Orban or the Northern League, or the other vehicles for White Tribal reactionism. White tribals need not feel too bad about this - there are other tribes that would react as vehemently if they face loss of dominance. But the better bet may be to do as the liberals did, and redefine their own tribe to compete for dominance. Else by 2024 or 2028,they will end as a small minority which others look down on.

Gross oversimplification. Many Americans are opposed to illegal immigration because of the impact on wages and jobs for current US citizens. Entire industries in this country have been taken over by cheap, illegal labor for decades, ironically with strong support from Republicans. This economic concern has nothing to do with skin color. I personally am a huge advocate for the workers from Latin America due to their work ethic, especially in agriculture. As for anti Muslim feelings, besides concern for terrorism, is the concern with assimilation. This religion is anti women and anti gay. Its about 500 years behind the times. I realize you could say that about the Christian religion, but isn't one messed up religion bad enough.

It seems crystal clear to me this administration is desperately trying to sound the bugle on the latest version of the war that never ends. Trump, Miller, and Sessions head the scariest, and to this point, the most effective 'Axis of Evil' in my Mexican-American memory. And after experiencing a lifetime of 'white privilege' in the workplace I do enjoy the irony of their panic here in California.

I have relatives by marriage in Texas, and they are Trump supporters who think he's doing great work at the border. One brother-in-law is a painting contractor, who hires "illegals" regularly, pays them substantially less than his "regular guys" because he can - they are grateful for the work. Another in-law who is a building contractor (and hires "illegals" for "grunt work", also owns a large number of low-income rental houses, shacks that he barely maintains, and they are populated almost exclusively by "illegals", who would never complain to housing authorities about the conditions they live in (rusty pipes and contaminated water, paper-thin walls, lack of heat in the winter, etc). If they fall behind even one month in rent, this guy removes the front door of the shack until payment is made. He employs "illegals" to collect rent, clean out shacks when folks move, etc, and pays them by deducting portions of their rent. These guys profit from the immigrants they hate. And what puzzles me even more about their lack of empathy is that they both win government contracts based on their minority status as American Indians (1/4). If the trend Mr. Blow describes continues, and the fear of the xenophobes come to fruition, maybe we white folks will be living in shacks, scratching out a living as day laborers...

We need to make sure we don't become the people we feel support Trump's white nationalism acting with rage and hate. Facts are what is important which is why demagogues like Trump attack the truth with alternate facts and lies constantly. Trump will not last in his 8th decade his power will wane leaving the GOP in shambles as he hangs out with fellow billionaires at Mar A Lago after conning the white working class he could care less about again.

If Buchanan fears the flood of immigrants and refugees happening now, his head will explode when all of the climate refugees (those fleeing rising oceans and extreme heat or drought) come calling! The universe is dynamic. It has never stopped changing, and it won't now, whether Buchanan and Trump want it to or not. God gave us a brain to adapt to these changes. Those who want to stop it are really showing us they have no confidence in their God-given ability to adapt. They may thump their bibles, but they have no real faith in themselves or their God.

I don't think a decline in white birthrates is a bad thing, and I think a decline in birthrates in general is a long term positive and a necessity, but honestly, these haters made the weather with their policies and now they're complaining about the rain. We are likely the sort of nice white family whose unborn children these racists are bemoaning, but between stagnant wages, sky rocketing health care, soaring costs and debt for university, lack of maternity leave, and discrimination against pregnant workers and nursing mothers, there a number of ways - financially and emotionally, that we simply could afford to have more than one child. This is the case for so many of my well- behaved, middle class white friends and peers, if they even took the plunge of having a child at all. I've heard some old conservatives call this reasoning selfish, but they are the same folks who say that people in minority communities should not have children they can't afford. They'd be better off picking a side of their mouth to talk out of and sticking with it. The lack of support for women, working parents, children's health and childcare, public schools, etc., are all policy choices and this is, in some respects, an unintended repercussion of that set of choices.

Going out on a limb, I'm a progressive who also harbors some of the same concerns Pat Buchanan brings up And that's although I usually find him and his views crass and narrow-minded. After assessing what's my own main concern, I discovered it's discomfort with change itself. And it's been proven (Holmes-Rahe Stress Scale) that any and all change requires an adaptation process and adaptation causes psychophysiological stress. The greater the change or it's number, the greater the stress involved having to adapt to it. To avoid criticism from left lean-ers I usually keep these thoughts to myself. However, I fear that there might be other Democrats/Independents who also have in-the-closet concerns or reactions to change which they don't want much less admit to. So, if that's accurate, if there are more of us than meets the eye, (but maybe there's not) those concerns might be overlooked by Democrats running for office and as a result push those teetering on the edge into the Republican camp whose riding the wave of the Western world's reaction to too much change too fast . That must not happen.

I fear the loss of American culture. That is the culture that created the blues, bluegrass, jazz, and folk music. Talk about racist - Mr Blow cannot see any other issue but race. He makes every issue dependent on and caused by “white privilege”. Instead, he should explain why the huge number of 3rd world immigrants will improve life here. Are they really “yearning to be free”? Or, do they just want free stuff?

“Ethnomasochism, the taking of pleasure in the dispossession of one’s own ethnic group, is a disease of the heart that never afflicted the America of Andrew Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt, or Dwight Eisenhower. It comes out of what James Burnham called an ‘ideology of Western suicide,’ a belief system that provides a morphine drip for people who have come to accept the inevitability of their departure from history.” Wow, how sad that a small minority of whites get so freaked out about the "browning" of our country. I hate to tell you this, Mr. Racist Buchanan, this country was all brown before we whites arrived to squash them by killing them, forcing them onto reservations, dispossessing them of their land without compensation, and then treating them like no-status "citizens." This not only includes Native Americans, but the Spanish who arrived here before white Northern Europeans did. You and your kind make me feel ashamed to be white.

"These immigration policies are for people who conflated America with whiteness,..." Good luck to them, but it's a lost cause. My wife and I were having lunch the other day, window table here in Atlanta. I spent most of my career in the construction industry. Anyway, a large group of construction workers were walking just outside the restaurant, a dozen or so, and not one was white. All Latinos and African American. It wasn't like that 20 years ago, just the opposite, mostly white. They can write all the immigration laws they want, but the southern hemisphere is migrating to the north for a number of reasons, but mostly to save their children. And that's a helluva motivator.

Pat Buchanan is not only racist but chauvinistic. He might lament the birth rate decline among whites but he has never done anything to help women but on the contrary he has acted against their interest. White women have stopped having babies because there is no social support for women who get pregnant and then raise those children — as single mothers or part of a couple. Lack of : paid parental leave, quality day cares, support for parents at work etc. Most white women have no time for this “white minority anxiety”. It’s a day late and a dollar short. We all knew it was coming. For years women have argued for support. They were ignored. White privilege is a fact. White women have used it to control their bodies. When white men said there would be no “socialistic” support white women said then there would be no babies.

You've hit it on the nose, Mr. Blow, but try telling Buchanan or his ilk this truth and they will deny it, because this is not the way they see it. They see themselves as defenders of a great mythical America, and everyone else is an invader. They will never admit that fear of losing their white privilege is behind everything. They will probably never even admit that back when all our ancestors became human, they started out as black humans, and the white people they are descended from were the invaders who moved north and turned white over thousands of years. They think Jesus was a white man with brown hair and blue eyes. They believe what they want to believe.

It was the European invasion of America, once the province of the American Indian tribes that led to the destruction of their way of life future. Their way of life is no more. Pat Buchanan sees the same pattern at work here and, like the president, wants to protect the supremacy of white privilege and hegemony in America today. People of color from the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East or Asia need not apply. Buchanan and company don't want these folks to contaminate America. Black and brown people are not attempting to overrun America, but also seek assimilation and acceptance as did the Irish and Italian immigrants a century ago. The aptitude of Asians, East Indians, Africans and Muslims for their genius in science, medicine and technology contributes handsomely to this country in this, the computer age. America should be thankful for how greatly they have enriched the quality of life in our country.

I must say that the Hater In Chief has a real knack at churning the masses into a frothy foam of wasted energies and lost substance. As ancient humans, we were honed to be vigilant to detect and set upon "outsiders". It's in the blood. It doesn't take much to bring this to the fore. It's all well and good to "project" our troubles on those who are the weak and poor who will come; unable to speak English if at all but more than willing to clean toilets and crouch over strawberries to make a subsistence living in the land of the free and home of the brave. They are the apparent least of us who must bear our burdens of cruel hatefulness just to feed the kids and lay low; sending a good portion home to their impoverished families south of our borders, They are the Heart Blood of America. We owe them a great deal for their example of selfless service and endurance beneath the wheel we've created for them. Where would we be without them?? I don't want to know. Of course, the most curious and humourous aspect of this defense of white supremacy is that there are no pure white folk any more than there are pure blacks or browns. Genetically we are all mixed up; "mutts" like Obama said. And we all descend from humans who were most certainly very dark. Pale skin is a relatively recent anomaly and questionable in it's adaptation survivability especially as the world heats up. I am a half-breed, 1/8 Canuck Indian-7/8 paleface who would have welcomed more melanin, having sunburned often.

The author should explain, in his opinion, which races are allowed to try to survive, and which ones (apparently whites) should sit quietly by and allow themselves to go extinct. He should also explain why. He should do this to demonstrate that he is not a racist, because I’m sure the author would never let his hatred of certain melanin levels influence his opinions.

Charles Blow's explanation is enlightening, with the pieces falling into place. What I find most remarkable is the analogous symptoms with extremist Zionist rhetoric. In contrast with a moderate Zionism compatible the right or refugees to return, with the Jews and Palestinians living safely together with equal rights, extremist Zionism sees a Palestinians majority living in Israel, not as a blessing, but as Israel's destruction. Instead of "ethnomasochism," extremist Zionists use the less intellectually sounding "self-hating Jew."

John Grillo (Edgewater,MD)
"Ethnomasochism"? Despite being a near 70 year old white male, the obvious and overwhelming evidence is that the accurate term that should be applied to the inhumane behavior of Buchanan's "White America" should instead be "Ethnosadism", particularly the repulsive conduct of our Fake President and his anti-democratic cabal. One wonders about the wretched "welcome" Buchanan's humble Irish ancestors had to struggle with in their penetration of the deep Anglo-Saxon, Protestant power structure that inhospitably met their arrival on our shores, and his own personal reaction to this discriminatory history? Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to describe these hate-filled, small-minded Losers.
AnObserver (Upstate NY)
Buchanan may be better spoken than many who marched in Charlottesville, but he's just as vile. The entire concept is vile and rooted in an almost medieval level of fear and bigotry. This simply proves how primitive some people are.

Finally, it is not a matter of skincolour, but of culture. At least over here in Europe. Uncontrolled mass immigration from Islamic and African countries will influence the quality of European societies negatively. About 80-90% of the Muslims in Western Europe meanwhile would rather like to live according to Islamic laws and customs. This is incompatible with the modern western way of life, mentality and values that grew over the past thousand years. Is this not something to defend, Mr. Blow?
Lotzapappa (Wayward City, NB)
It is indeed something worth defending, Mr. Verburg. I would not be surprised if Mr Blow, like a lot of other well-meaning, liberal-minded, and profoundly naive people (many commentators here, for instance) believes either (a) that because Europeans were imperialist oppressors that deserve whatever is coming to them or (2) that the newcomers will become bring wonderful new perspectives to your old, tired continent. In short, Mr Blow probably could care less about your values. But that's just my guess . . .

This is amusing: in the wheel of history, the final dominant colour will be the one of the first Homo Sapiens Sapiens. The "white race", and the "asian race" with their "success" out of the realities of capitalism, has lost and will loose, respectively, their gusto for reproduction, and the final result will be the ultimate domination of Africa and Latino in the world. I guess, things then will be as good and bad as today's, because we don't know how to build a future together...

Two things: • Unless you are an American Indian, you know, the people that are already here before Columbus, before the Puritans, you are an immigrant having descended from one. The Buchanans, The Sessions, The Millers, The Bannons, The Trumps, and ever bigot closeted or not, are unknowingly hating their ancestors and themselves. • Free market demands free movement, As long as the US believes in capitalism, everyone will be coming here whether they have papers or not. But the insecure, racists of the GOP and their supporters, the ones who bedevil immigrants but need them to cook their food, clean their house, and raise their children could not be bothered. Just like Trump whose resorts and hotels are being run by immigrants. “Be Best” — Melania Trump, an immigrant “model”
Patricia (Pasadena)
Native Americans did not undergo a separate human evolution in America. North America was covered by glaciers until around 10,000 BC. It was only after those glaciers receded that the Siberian people who inhabited the land bridge that existed then across what is now the Bering Sea began to cross over on foot and down the coast by canoe to inhabit the landmass of the Americas as the first settlers and immigrants. North America was uninhabitable until then.

Had we been inclusive from the get-go - or even after the Civil War - which many had learned to be a war over taxes - we wouldn't have so many white people so afraid. African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans... all have invented, added to our culture -- but not in our history books or the movies, or newspapers.... If we had had respect for others, they would have had respect for us, too. It's pitiful.

What in the world is going on in this country...and the world. Are we going back to the 19th century and earlier? Who/what started this? First the natives, then the blacks. What gave whites their entitlement genes? I'm white, and I'm ashamed.

Urging white people to hate themselves in part because of unfettered illegal immigration from third world countries is ridiculous. Why do they all want to come to a white majority countries in the first place? We are having a Camp of the Saints moment.

1. we are witnessing the unfounded paranoic fear based extinction of our democracy predicated on the dread terror of everything without reason shown by MAGA thumpers. 2. We have already had a wholesale turnover of our continent from brown to white through the genocide of the first peoples. Many of those "brown" people from Latin America are the survivors of that genocide. Maybe they are here to MAGA?

This piece harkens to a period of world history that should be of concern to everyone who values decency and democracy. When Hitler rose to power in 1933, he began the subtle but systematic process of condemning Jews as an infection upon the state. Over the following years, he had so thoroughly convinced (brainwashed) the German people of the danger of “subhuman” Jews, that they acquiesced to the notion of rounding up Jews and sending them to Nazi death factories, hundreds of such facilities, throughout Europe. Mr. Blow is correct that Trump and many of his followers are fearful of changes to America’s demographics. While I seriously doubt that in today’s world we will ever see the level of evil such as that perpetrated by Hitler, Donald Trump’s decision to separate children from parents and refer to immigrants as “an infestation” represent recent minute examples of a white suprimacist mindset that has painful similarities to rhetoric employed by an earlier authoritarian. That so many Americans cannot see the potential danger in this is absolutely frightening to me.
Kumar Paturi Esq. (ny)
Easy solution, is to identify mixed children as white if one Parent is White. America does have many mixed couples, White and Asian, White and Hispanic, White and Black etc., these offspring are not considered white, let them be considered white children, these people will be happy.

Do I detect a gloating tone in Mr. Blow’s prose? I have spent much of my life living and working in Third World countries which are populated by and governed by people of color. These countries do not present a pretty picture. Violent crime and government corruption on a massive scale are endemic, grim poverty is the norm, hideous filth and squalor dominate any cityscape you care to name, nothing works properly—not the phones, not the plumbing, not the public transportation, nothing—and the only buildings and infrastructure that look nice and actually function are built and maintained by European or U.S. contractors. Can a fair-minded person at least sympathize with White Europeans and White Americans who fear that when people of color become the dominant populations of Europe and America, Europe and America will degenerate into Third World conditions? Is it unreasonable to fear that Michelangelo’s statue of David may one day be smashed to pieces by sledge hammer-wielding Islamic fanatics; that the Sistine Chapel ceiling may one day be slathered with Islamic graffiti? Is it unreasonable to fear that people in America who are not part of original American culture, people who have no comprehension of the 18th Century Enlightenment ideals which gave birth to America, will be unable to maintain America as the shining beacon of government by logic and reason and law it has been up until now?
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
As always, Mr. Blow is pitch perfect. One edit- it's not simply "white power" that these fossils are clinging to, its "white male power". Huge difference. The fact that god was turned - presto chango - into a white man a few thousand years ago has been very, very convenient for a certain demographic. The rest of us - not so much.

Conservative, racist American whites conveniently forget that their ancestors immigrated to this land, almost extinguishing the Native population. Then they built their wealth on the backs of Africans, whose descendants they still treat like animals. I suppose Might makes Right. Now they have the nerve to complain about losing ‘their’ way of life. It’s Karma- or, put another way, The meek shall inherit the Earth.

Yesterday there was a poll released. Where 75%+ of Republicans wanted to separate families to punish the parents and express America''s strength, 75%+ of Democrats wanted to keep families together to express America's kindness. The base is ANGRY. The base has its fears & rage stoked by Fox, Breitbart, and InfoWars-- in order to keep it in a state of fervent panic and rage. This drives gun purchases, Pizzagate field trips, etc. Rage and the need for scapegoats precedes racism. Remember these same people hate white "feminazis' climate scientists, and university professors too. We're just harder to ID. Rage has early life origins. Read Alice Miller on the rise of Nazis... brutalized kids in 1890-1900, with chilly and punitive parenting practices, growing up into angry people looking for scapegoats. They needed permissible, approved scapegoats, that did not anger papa. They needed their rage to have approved designated outlets. Papa Trump is providing approved targets to an enraged base. Evangelicals have some terrifying childrearing practices. Look at Mike Pence's childhood. His father was maniacal. Popular Christian parenting books, like Gary Ezzo's books "Raising Kids Gods Way" (secularized as "On Becoming Babywise") will horrify you. These very popular books advocate hitting babies to "chastise" them, among many other practices that are the opposite of empathic or responsive parenting. Today's GOP is highly narcissistic.

Trump and his cronies are a blip, the last gasp of a dying, white supremacist breed. The country is becoming more diverse, and there's absolutely nothing they can do about that. This too will pass (this shameful period in history.) However, Trump can do a lot of damage (already has) between now and then, which scares the you know what out of me.

The human race has one colour: skin. That colour, like most, goes from very pale to very dark. If we are to divide humans scientifically, only blood types make sense. There was a time when Irish, Italians, to name only two, where not considered "white" in the United States. And today, the Buchanan mob probably refuses to consider white liberals and gays. I have much more in common with people who share my way of life, no matter their skin tone, that with people who look like me but stand for what I find despicable.

"In describing Western liberals’ aversions to instituting racist, xenophobic immigration policies, [Buchanan] wrote: “We are truly dealing here with an ideology of Western suicide.” What an incredible statement. Everything Trump has been doing for the last year and a half is leading to the destruction of long-standing Western alliances, and therefore, weakening the very framework that binds these democracies together. Buchanan is an idiot. He equates the West with whiteness. Sorry, Pat. The "ideology" of the West is linked to the openness of its societies, fairness of law, and a repudiation of fascism and tyranny. White supremacy is the anti-thesis of that. There is no Western suicide, what's going on now is called Murder.

White supremacy from the defeated but not extinct Confederacy, continues to rear its ugly head, often by evangelicals in the name of God. What hypocrisy!! Where are Grant and Sherman when you need them?

I think Mr. Blow hits the nail on the head. They no longer feel even the need to speak in hushed tones. Its straight up, no hesitation white supremacy now coming from the White House, Fox News, Breitbart, etc. The fear they experience must be excruciating, but honestly I can't wrap my mind around it. It's a place I just can't get to even if I try. How many of them have even been outside of this country to know what it is they are so afraid of. Pitiful, pathetic, frightened rabbits...
San Ta (North Country)
Mr. Blow is a prime example of racism, lumping ALL "white people" together into an indistinguishable mass, with all presumed to share the same biases, outlooks, and beliefs. He plays the game of picking one example of white racism (real or alleged) and paints all "whites" with it. Why doesn't he present examples of Blacks who are racist? Surely he knows several; he can start by looking in the mirror. Maybe Mr. Blow would like to present a short list of African countries in which he would prefer to reside. One finds little about "Black Power" in practice (outside Wakanda) to commend as examples of the preferred outcomes he implies.
Nick Yurchenko (Oregon)
Good! White supremacy, as the foundational, dominant ideology of this nation, cannot end soon enough!

I suspect many white liberals think they will be treated as allies when this all takes place. They are sorely mistaken.

Charles call this anxiety of Whites is due to their racist view. But his happiness over this fact, he may claim, is not a racist . But it is. He wants to dominate White people for his own benefits. So Whites who want to keep their way of life must unite to preserve their majority. It is the way the world works. No other people would allow their country to be dominated by other people. White politicians who want to bring other people to this country is doing that for their temporary political benefits. When the other people become the majority they will throw these white politicians out to have their own people in power. If you do not want that happen to your children, heed the advise of Pat Buchanan and Trump, and control the border and immigration. There is no need to have guilt feeling for protecting your self interest. This is an advise to you from a non-White man.
Maggie2 (Maine)
Thank you Charles for yet another wise and rational piece about how the changing demographics has brought the usual fear mongering racists out of their wretched holes. Buchanan, Trump etal. may continue to plant their odious seeds of hate, but ultimately, these pathetic white mostly males, will go the way of the extinct Dodo bird. Personally, I cannot wait.
Bergo72 (Washington DC)
What has to happen to convince people like Buchanan that race is a social construct? By making race, and its companion ethnicity immutable yet somehow meaningful, White supremacists like Buchanan and the rest of that ilk keep people from achieving their full potential then complain about how dire things are. Stop putting your thumb on the scale!! Why suppress any part of the population that can contribute their minds, their passions, their labors to our collective success? Why limit ourselves? This country, at least the Republican apparatchik, is starting to resemble the Afrikaners under apartheid and the Whites in Rhodesia. Get a grip, Pat.

Bergo I think if he's Irish American he ought to know already that our kind was excluded from the category of whiteness by the British for centuries and only finally achieved whiteness in America after WWII. If he doesn't realize that now, then he's one of those unfortunate Irish-Americans who chose to fight the bigots by becoming one himself.

I believe this begs the question, Are we "the West" or are we "the World"? It is the age-old story of nationalism versus socialism. And how a morally untethered person can use populist notions from either side to sway the propagandized masses to his deluded logic. I am agog. I see it working, right before my eyes. In America, in 2018. Where have I been living for 60 years? Who are my neighbors? Are they really ok with a president selected by Putin? Is 40% of America complicit with Russian active ops? Does Congress know ANYTHING damning on Trump, and are knowingly dissembling? All these questions, only one solution. VOTE DEMOCRAT

After all, we see in Trump the man the superiority of the white race: a liar, sexual predator, dismantler of decades of prosperous advancements, climate denier (talk to Gov. Brown of California) and racist. He surely shows us how grand and glorious it is to be a rich white man in this society, allowed to get away with anything while misdemeanor migrants are separated from their children, and young blacks committing minor crimes are incarcerated for decades. Oh yes, we must save the white man's perfect society at all costs.

These people who fear the decline of White Civilization should buy into mandatory paid family leave, no matter the size of the business, and increased social support so their special white women could make more white babies. As long as they pretend to have "family values" yet prevent every family from thriving, they will have to deal with their horror that white supremacist culture is on the decline. They can't have it both ways.

No actually if you study European history you will find that we practiced all that violence on each other before we took it on the road. The Saxons tried to wipe out the Celts, the Vikings moved into England, colonized large portions of it and sold thousands of Saxons into slavery. Then the Normans came to conquer England and kill off more Saxons. It really was attempted genocide. And then there's the Irish, always being subjected to "order" imposed by English troops, like Cromwell's troops, who left Ireland less populous by 300,000 after putting down what he called a rebellion. I think that deep down in the Northern European psyche, we are the most terrified of each other.

Thanks to Facebook shares, I have learned which of my friends and family members most identify with Buchanan's opinions. Two in particular surprise me. One whose parents were born in Greece and settled in Mississippi in the 1940s and the other whose grandparents and great-grandparents came to Louisiana from Italy and Sicily in the early 1900s. It was not that long ago that their ancestors experienced racial discrimination. Because of that, I would have expected my friend and family member to emphasize with those unwanted here because they will not contribute to America's whiteness. On the contrary, based on the messages they share, it would appear their ancestors were Old South aristocracy. They are staunch defenders of the public display of Confederate symbols and Donald Trump and revile anyone they perceive as a threat to their southern culture.
Patricia (Pasadena)
I get kind of irritated by the simplistic use of the concept of "white people." In Europe, in order to be white, you had to be of "good Northern stock," a definition of whiteness that actually excluded most of the people of Europe at the time. Irish, French. Italian, Greek, Spanish, even Polish -- all considered non-white people up until the 20th century. The Irish were classified with dogs. Catholics -- forget it. Not white! So while it is true that people who have white skin or pale skin have been running this country since it started, it is also true that many people now officially inside the definition of "white people" had not yet been admitted back then to the category of whiteness by the Northern European Protestants who oversaw that category. Hence the anxiety felt by some people who thought they'd finally made it into that club, while the privilege conveyed by membership is being yanked away from them. Also, most of European history is white people invading and stealing land and goods from other white people. The Germans were invading France even back in Caesar's time, to put WWI and WWII into some historical perspective. That's how Europe and Britain "grew up" as a civilization. Sob. So no wonder we try to control everything, and fall into a panic when we can't. Our own history is what lives in our genes and makes us so afraid.
Rich (Berkeley CA)
All this reactionary hand-wringing over this imagined "Western suicide", which has more to do with fertility and birth rates than with immigration, and so little concern about the very real dangers of continuing to spew CO2 into the atmosphere. Let's see, fundamentalists believe that man cannot change their perceived god's creation, or that if the earth warms, it's god's will? But the changing demographics... that's apparently out of god's control, so we better build a wall. The superstitious foolishness and hypocrisy would be laughable if it weren't so damned serious.
Ralph Averill (New Preston, Ct)
For all of our history the whiter christian race has made life for others as difficult and challenging as possible, and yet here we are, white christians seem to be shrinking into irrelevancy. This reality seems to blow their superior race idea all to hell. One would think these people would be encouraging non-white people to get abortions instead of making it difficult for them. The same for birth control. In any event, the keep-the-race-pure crowd will inbreed themselves into oblivion eventually.
Patricia (Pasadena)
Christianity has not existed for all of our history. And Christianity was not even "white" until after the Dark Ages. Before that it was a Middle Eastern religion taken up by the various peoples around the Mediterranean during the Roman Empire. The only "white" people back then were the pagan tribes who inhabited Northern Europe and the British Isles. Those people took many centuries to Christianize. White-skinned Europeans didn't fully accept Christianity until the Crusades when the Italian Pope convinced them to "reclaim" Jerusalem, as if white Christians had ever actually lived there before.
Ralph Averill (New Preston, Ct)
Patricia, you are correct. In my comment, by the term "our history" I meant US history. I should have made that more clear.

I’ve never understood Buchanan’s concern. Why does he care about the racial or ethnic character of the country in the future? He’ll be long-dead by the time his great-grandchildren are engaged in their own pursuit of happiness. His contribution to their skin color will fade with each generation. His “culture” will be seen as archaic in their eyes either way. At the turn of the next century his genetic contribution to his progeny will have been diluted to less than 1%. What claim does he have on the other 99% if they are happy? In all likelihood they will be a rich blend of Scottish, Mexican and Chinese by then, a fact that will enrich their lives, if anything. It takes truly deep-seated racism to give a damn.
Gary Waldman (Florida)
So ironic that such a young country settled by people from all over the world can claim to be of a dominant ethnic identity. Just a few hundred years ago, a blip on history's radar, white Europeans settled in the northern sector of the New World and drove out, killed off or segregated the indigenous population that looked very much like the populations of the rest of the continent. Then they went on to steal a massive amount of children and young adults from another continent and enslave them here. Now, suddenly we feel intimidated that we are falling into minority status in a society where ethnicity as a defining character is getting blurrier and blurrier? White Europeans who invaded a civilization (thousands of years old) just a few centuries ago are worried about being marginalized? In a democracy founded upon the principle that all men are created equal? Who the hell do we think we are?
Ted George (Paris)

Yes that's what the Liberals want to let all these minorities come in and take control of the government. That African Americans think its great to let foreigners into the country and its a Civil right to them is strange. While the poor suffer of some 40 million mostly black, from crime, poverty, 1 person parenting, poor education, joblessness they rather fight for open borders to allow illegals here. How are these illegals going to help blacks in the cities Mr Blow.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers Party disseminated a 25 point platform in Munich on February 24, 1920, thirteen years before he became Germany’s Chancellor. Here are a few of its provisions:: --- Any further immigration of non-citizens is to be prevented. We demand that all non-Germans, who have immigrated to Germany since August 2, 1914, be forced immediately to leave the Reich. --- Whoever has no citizenship is to be able to live in Germany only as a guest, and must be under the authority of legislation for foreigners --- Publications which are counter to the general good are to be forbidden. We demand legal opposition to known lies and their promulgation through the press. --- We demand legal prosecution of artistic and literary forms which exert a destructive influence on our national life and the closure of organizations opposing the above made demands. --- For the execution of all of this we demand the formation of a strong central power in the Reich. Unlimited authority of the central parliament over the whole Reich and its organizations in general. It took Hitler a few years in office to get things fully worked out according to his liking, but eventually he got to where he was going. Things are moving much quicker these days. A nip and a tuck here, a nip and a tuck there and you're here. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/imt/1708-ps.asp

Buchanan was always like that, the first shoulder for any Holocaust denier to cry on, and a cosistent apologist and champion for every Nazi war criminal. He has made a career of thundering against the perceived brown hordes. His 1992 address to the GOP Convention used the word "homosexual" something like 47 times. He always was the secret heart and soul of the GOP. He's no secret any more.

Interesting that Buchanan would choose Jackson, Roosevelt, and Eisenhower. Jackson oversaw the Native American genocide, Roosevelt oversaw the initial immigration law and set up the slave labor, I mean guest worker program, and Eisenhower oversaw “operation wetback,” the systematic expulsion of Hispanics from the country. To charge Blow with falsely concluding Buchanan is talking about white supremacy, is like saying the KKK is not a racist organization.

Yeah, you'll care when your quality of life goes to hell if minorites take over because it will. Look at any minority run city. Massive crime. Massive debt. A welfare state except in this case everybody will suffer under it. Face it, whites are the only people ever to fight a war to end slavery. Everything you know comes from white education. The greatest innovation happens under whites. Making yourself feel good by "sticking it to whitey" won't change these basic facts. All you will do is ruin yourselves and doom everybody's children. Not just whites. That's why whites will not go down without a fight. Whites have the compassion to resist ruination for everybody. Including minorities. Without whites, the west will turn into afghanistan. Even Asians know this. That is why they copied white societies while others choose to eat dirt cookies.

Enough of this racists nonsense. I'm a lifelong Democrat with more than 4 decades as a member of the press under my belt, a reader of and subscriber to the NYT for all of those 40+ years. However, the Times has pushed it too far; we are cancelling our NYT subscription today. This steady divisive bashing of the majority of Americans for holding different opinions on law and order than the extreme fringe of Democratic Party and socialist Sanders nuts will not end well. The reality is that most of America, regardless of gender and race, are centrists. The Times and national U.S. press also used to be. If Trump wasn't such a misogynist elitist male (as are most males his age), more centrist Dems and Pubs and Independents would not hesitate to vote Republican. The U.S. does have to determine its course between nationalism and globalism. There is no debate that Bill Clinton, George Bush and Barack Obama had weak - and just plain catastrophically wrong - international policies. That's 24 years of wasted opportunities to fix America's screwed up immigration laws post-Reagan.

Greeley Miklashek, MD (Spring Green, WI)
Glad you brought up DNA Dr. Don. All of us humans have 99.9% identical DNA due to a series of "genetic bottlenecks" occurring over the past 73.5kya, of which the eruption of Mt.Toba is thought to have been the most critical, leaving only perhaps 2,000 of our ancestors alive to intermarry and carry on. Only 18 species are known on earth with this degree of genetic similarity between each individual and the only other mammal is the blind mole rat. So, only about 40 of our 40,000 genes account for our racial differences. We are overpopulated as a species, irrespective of skin color, etc. Stress R Us

Charles Blow is so angry . Of course, he would never consider that his views are racist. In his elite world , we blacks are all victims with no control over our present or future. I fear not a minority majority country but the IDEOLOGY of the HARD LEFT that Mr Blow represents. The Left never think that if all their ideas and policies were implemented we would go the way of Venezuela . At the heart of The Left is a hatred of capitalism. Yet capitalism is the only reason The Times can exist and pay people like Mr Blow. Somehow leftists like Mr Blow think they will remain untouched by the radical economic policies they propose. In this article, certain statistics fall into the category "non-Hispanic whites." I returned to the US in 1953 and was plopped into 4th grade. I was, by and large, Spanish-using (i.e. besides speaking, I could read, write and even understand). No bilingual education in Calif in those days. My English-using mother did the best she could to make sure I'd be competent in English but her life was complicated. I survived. My being blond-haired and blue-eyed didn't keep me from being welcome among family, friends and classmates who called themselves "Chicanos" (etymologically from an old pronunciation of 'Mexico'). "Hispanic" referred to a vast, long, rich language, cultural and historical heritage that we were trying to reconnect with. (The US is **today** the 6th or 7th largest Spanish-using country in the world.) In 1955 or '56 I was asked by the (public) school to check a box in a list of "races." I was clueless. A (very) white teacher, proudly from Alabama, told me "You're white." I said, "I think I'm Chicano." She said, "Y'all are white. You just don't grow up knowing English." And I kept marking "white" 'til I left the US and have never been asked what my **race** is again. But I know ex-Chicanos who say "We're Hispanic or Latino, not white, nowadays." But now I have to wonder: Why the heck aren't Italian-Americans and French-Americans also classed as Latino? Indeed, their ancestors came from "Latin Countries" too.
Ned Ludd (The Apple)
As a 62-year-old white guy who grew up buying the line that what made the United States great was its enumerated constitutional principles — in particular its majestic and unprecedented Bill of Rights — I marvel at my fellow whites who’ve decided that those principles pale in importance to their desperate need to reassert white social and political dominance ... constitutional principles be damned. If they fear they’re losing their country — well, perversely, that’s one thing (perhaps the only thing) we have in common.
Mike (San Diego)
The culture and competition of America made it great, not the color of her inhabitants. The views of lazy, entitled white fat guys like Pat and Friends are wholly disgusting and need to die with the old fat white men who hold them.
Nikki (Islandia)
Buchanan's comments conflate two different issues: demographic change and cultural change. The former does not necessarily imply the latter, or would not if the GOP and their ilk were not hell-bent on destroying our educational system. Our public school system was greatly expanded in the 19th and early 20th centuries with the express purpose of instilling certain cultural values (such as commitment to democracy) and knowledge of American history, English language fluency, etc. Through the school system, waves of immigrants, especially from Southern and Eastern Europe, were socialized into what it meant to be an American. If our school system is no longer capable of doing this, Republicans need look no further than the mirror to see who is responsible for that. Cuts in school funding and onerous testing mandates have hamstrung our schools' ability to help the current immigrants assimilate. White though I may be, I have no sympathy for racial arguments against immigration. However, I do believe that there are core values that make us American, and that Americans should have knowledge of the Western history, literature, and culture that made us who we are. That is a legacy worth protecting. Changing complexion and changing character are not the same. While new immigrants can expand that rich tradition, it must not be allowed to be forgotten or the character of the nation really will change.

When is Mr. Blow going to write articles on the suffering of poor people in America? When is he going to rail against age discrimination that is rampant in the workplace? When is he going to become outrage over kids being shot by police as their parent is being arrested or life sentences for minor, non-violent crimes because it was that person's 3rd strike? Where is his voice on babies being ripped from their mother's arms 48-2 weeks after birth because their mother is in a US prison for some misdemeanor? It is nice that Blow is concerned about people from Central America but we need to be able to take care of our own first an foremost. Otherwise many of these new immigrants will exchanging one hell hole for another. As long as the Right to Life - Shrink Government so it can fit in a Reproductive Organ Party in charge we will continue to have Americans in extreme poverty. The alternative is not any better as the Hate Anyone who doesn't Chant our Mantra Party openly discriminates and promotes racist policies that further divide the US. Tribalism is part of human nature but we should be smarter than that. And with rapidly approaching 8 billion people in the planet and resources being rapidly consumed tribalism will only get worse.

> Immigration is like a spice, a little is good too much and you've made a spoiled dish. Life's balance is delicate. A little bump and it can be thrown into madness. Listen to the great Greek God, Apollo....the god of limits... know your limit. This is ultimately a power game by ALL sides. I could delineate each side's power play and tactics, but I don't have the characters to do it justice. Minus the children under 13, there are no innocence players here. “life”- all life -“the world… is will to power, and nothing besides” Nietzsche Riddle me this: what do you think Mexicans would do if you told them that in 30-yrs white people from the US and Europe would be the majority in Mexico, therefore, they would not be? Answer: They'd freakout, probably pay for the wall. N.B., life started in a mud puddle somewhere probably in Africa. By definition every country is a country of immigrants. I beg you to please stop with the self righteousness. If the plan is to allow every dispossessed person in the world into the West, we are done for......It's an optimist's dream, and Hell is full of optimists; you'll find them in the last ring. This is not a statement against immigration. I'm everything but a DJT fan, but the Dems are going to get their clock cleaned on this issue. Let sleeping dogs lie; move on 2018 and 2020 will decide whether you and I end up in camps too; because if DJT wins that's the final result. Wake up. Prometheus in greek means to know before.

In this column, Mr. Blow lays out the data showing the seemingly unstoppable demographic changes that will relegate the current white majority to minority status. In prior columns, he and others in this newspaper have reminded all of us of the problems besieging minorities: lack of power and opportunity, discrimination in employment, attempts at worker suppression, etc. Given this stark list of negatives associated with minority status, is it surprising that whites would do anything to cling to their majority status? Hell, I’m an immigrant and a minority member and while I do not like it I certainly can understand the fear. So a word of advice to Mr. Blow, please learn how to talk about demographic changes without stoking the fear of loss those changes likely elicit in so many in our country. Only when people are convinced there is enough in the pie to go around to all of us will this white extinction fear be controlled.

Buchanan is a goofball, but even a goofball can be correct about some things. American culture - which according to Blow is a white, western culture - has created one of the greatest countries in the history of the world here in Estados Unidos. Obviously the masses of immigrants, both legal and illegal, believe our culture is vastly superior to their own, otherwise they would never risk death to enjoy the quality of life we offer. Also, I haven’t seen hordes of Americans fleeing America to become refugees in Honduras or El Salvador. Although, ironically those countries enforce immigration laws and would imprison or deport them forthwith. Won’t it be grand when liberal Democrats manage to replace our wicked, evil culture - with those of Chad, Somalia, Uganda, etc. I’ll be laughing when the Times is calling Guatemalans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, etc. racists, because those “immigrants” are mad as hell to discover that transplanting their countries’ populations to America also transplanted their countries’ cultures here. As my Miami Spanish teacher said after the Marielito Boatlift - she no longer needed to return to Cuba to go home, she now lived in Little Havana. Watching New York become Tegucigalpa may be the only amusement provided to accompany the pain of watching a great society bled into oblivion.

Buchanan’s position, as well as Trump’s, is racist. Unless you’re white, of European ancestry, you’re not welcome here because that would result in the destruction of Western culture. Huh? Aren’t we first and foremost a nation of immigrants? I guess that’s ok with Trump as long as you’re a white immigrant, or said another way, no brown or dark-skinned people allowed. Looks like they make an exception for Asians. Well the “majority-minority” tide is coming in and it’s not gonna be turned out - at least not as long as we remain a nation of laws. We need an immigration policy, I guess, to deal with those coming in specifically at our southern border with Mexico. Everyone else is ok. Haitians and Africans would have a harder time getting here. I’m 63 now and I didn’t grow up thinking of America as a “white” nation, or that any of the friends I made along the way were not as welcome as me because they were non-white. That’s not an America I want to live in. And why is Buchanan concerned with this “Western Suicide”? And if he truly believes that this is a white-first nation, then what are his views on what are, for now, minorities? It’s too much to fathom. One thing is clear to me, Trump’s positions are identical to Buchanan’s. And he pretty much flouts it because 1) he’s president and 2) he has his base. Well, for the sake of our Founding Fathers’s vision for this country, let’s hope we can run Trump and his fellow racists the hell out of office starting this Nov.

Is it logical for white people to fear losing their majority? I think it depends on how such a future is presented. Much of the current discussion of race in America involves documenting the many ways that minorities have and continue to be disenfranchised by the actions and policies of the white majority. From this rhetoric, white people may reasonably conclude that being a minority comes with severe penalties and should be avoided. A better approach, in my opinion, is to focus on a positive vision for a multi-racial America. Think MLK's "I have a dream" speech. White people don't have cause to fear this future. We can still talk about the racial problems of today, but they should be framed in terms of failures to live up to the utopian ideal.

Well, as a Canadian I feel that diversity, whether it be cultural, linguistic, ethnic or culinary only makes Canada better. When you live in a place that's the most diverse on earth, you can enjoy and learn so much that it's difficult to express how wonderful it is. My family has been here since the late 1600's, I guess I'm a descendant of immigrants, or as one of my friends remarks, "an immigrant with seniority". The racism of Trump and his followers is disgusting, all they've done is won the ovarian lottery to quote Warren Buffet, to listen to them you would think they were actually responsible for their position in society.

As settlers moved away from eastern colonies to explore and settle western lands blending ensued, and once former slaves were free to migrate throughout the country seeking better jobs and living conditions blending followed. As more people migrated from Asia to the US, blending continued. Buchanan is championing something that never fully existed.
LF (SwanHill)
It's worth thinking about what "white extinction" means for these people. An individual example is the best illustration. Say you are a white racist. Let's pretend your name is Pat. And let's say Pat has one child - a daughter named Blanche. In one scenario Blanche marries Glen, a white guy, and has a son. In another scenario, she marries Stan, a black guy, and they have a son. In both cases, Pat has a grandson, Junior. Junior has the exact same percentage of Pat's DNA in both scenarios. He's raised in the same country. He's got the same mom. But in one of those outcomes, Pat, still with a wonderful grandchild, believes his white family line to be "extinct." You have to understand this to understand MAGA world. Some of Trump's fans are on here posting about "white genocide" (sidenote: NYTimes, maybe look that term up on SPLC when approving posts). "White genocide" doesn't mean they are being killed, or a campaign of forced sterilizations, or white children being kidnapped from their families of origin, or rape as a weapon of war... or any of the things that actually define a genocide. Nope. "White genocide" means the outrage of being forced to mix as equals. It means "they" might move to your neighborhood, go to your kid's school, marry your daughter. It's a clue about what "whiteness" means for Trump supporters. You're only white if you don't have any nonwhite blood and never mix with any nonwhite people as equals (as betters is okay though).
Howard Jarvis (San Francisco)
The Nazis had a term for what you are talking about: rassenschande, or racial defilement in English. You can read about it in the Nuremberg Laws of 1935.
HT (NYC)
You would think that white people would start wanting to be nice. O well.
jsutton (San Francisco)
How to keep the race "pure" or it will be extinct - well that's the basic philosophy of xenophobia and exclusion, the Confederate Flag and everything it symbolizes, and of course the Nazi obsession with what they called the "Aryan" race. Now we're being asked to pity the plight of the American white man.
Egypt Steve (Bloomington, IN)
We real, Anglo-Saxon Americans have been courting racial and cultural suicide ever since the mid-Nineteenth Century, when we opened the door to mass immigration by Patrick Buchanan's Irish Catholic ancestors. And now Buchanan wants to be one of "us" just because he's "white"? If we fall for that, the next thing, we'll have to admit that Charles Blow, or some Honduran immigrant, is one of "us" just because he's "human." Where's that supposed to end? Next thing you know, kids will be learning in school that all humans are created equal, or some such tomfoolery.
smacc1 (CA)
I see your point, Charles, but I see Pat Buchanan as making some credible points and simply tainting the heck out of it with references to race. Skin color isn't, in the end, the issue; cultural imperatives, traditions - those are. When Angela Merkel made her unilateral decision to let a million Syrian and North African "refuges" into her country, it's not the demographics of skin color that has had a corrosive effect; it's the cultural baggage these so-called refugees brought with them. Violent crime in Germany at the hands of these mostly young men has spiked. Rapes, other assualts, murders. THAT'S what's got many Germans very concerned, and the reaction by the political elites can be summed up as atrocious, essentially dismissing these concerns as I suppose you would – as blatant, ignorant racism. I've believed for a long time that the left (and this paper) has used the fact of Latin America's racial ethnic reality as a basis for accusing opponents of illegal immigration of being mere racists, afraid, as you propose too casually, of the "browning of America." IT's not the skin color that cues up anxiety; it's the value system, which includes an ethic decrying lawfulness (just look at California's outspoken political elites, welcoming illegal immigrants, scoffing at Federal laws) and includes an ever-widening "belief" that the US is illegitimate, its existence questionable, and its borders nothing but mere abstractions that anyone can cross. Now that's frightening.

The demise of white supremacy? I, for one, will not miss mayonnaise on bologna sandwiches, Kool-Aid, and pointy bed sheets with eye holes.
John Dawson (Brooklyn)
God speed to the decline of the white majority. I hate all forms of tribalism.
Bob Bruce Anderson (MA)
Pat Buchanan is a discredited public figure. He is an established liar, hater and bigot. Buchanan established his political bones while defending Richard Nixon as he served him right up to and beyond his resignation. Buchanan is an anti-semite and Holocaust Denier - called out on that by William F. Buckley and George Will. Pat Buchanan deserves to be shamed and rejected by restaurant owners everywhere. Unless fear and hate is on the menu.

Horace (Detroit)
Blow continues to spread the notion that there is something called "whiteness" which makes people who have it inherently different than people who don't. This is a pernicious notion whether it is advanced by Nazis and the KKK or by Blow.
Bill (NC)
This is absolutely the core issue... non-whites are breeding like rabbits without regard of their ability to support their offspring while whites are ensuring that they can provide a future for their children. You only have to look at sub-Saharan Africa and India to see the disastrous results of this.
karen (bay area)
Your thesis may be true of new arrivals, but it is not true by that first generation and beyond, when the children of immigrants of all ethnic groups settle down to zero, one, two or three children.
Jean (Cleary)
Does Buchanan remember the Irish invasion, the Italian Invasion, the Lithuanian and Polish invasions, the Chinese invasion, etc? Does he remember signs "No Irish need apply"?, " Go Home Wop"? And so on and so forth? Does he remember how hard working these immigrants were and what they contributed to our country? Every Immigrant Group who had the temerity to settle here has gone through the same horrible and inhumane treatment by those who came before. And it started with the invasion of Foreigners who slaughtered American Indians and stole their lands. Thank goodness Buchanan lost his bid on the Precidency, or we would have been going through this chaos a lot sooner. It is Buchanan' white entitlement and those like Ingraham that are adding to the Black Eyes that have been inflicted on us by Trump and the rest of them. Their prejudice is sickening. They should be charged with hate speech crimes.
W Rosenthal (East Orange, NJ)
There are more humanitarian crises than the one at the border where the GOP and ICE are caging up babies. We have a lot of poor people in the country, and a lot of them are white folks who are prone to support a demagogue like Trump. It might help the situation if Mr. Blow spilled some ink on the nexus of poverty and hate. The Times itself has written embarrassingly little about the Poor People's Campaign just a couple of weeks after commemorating the murder of MLK JR. I've been tempted to cancel my subscription because of this obvious editorial lapse. These Poor People's Campaign events are happening all over the country. Somehow the Tea Party rated much more coverage.
Skip Moreland (Baldwinsville)
Of course it is all about race. Trump and the republican party long before him have been running on keeping america white. He just turned dog whistles into a bullhorn about it and the base loves him for it. Every time trump opens his mouth about it is to say these people are evil and they are coming for your women folk. The same language I heard for decades about black men. They coming for the women! We have the lowest crime rate in decades, the immigrants cause less crime than the rest of us and all trump can do is shout they coming for the women! The only good thing I can say is that at least the bigotry of the republican party is out in the open these days when they can call neo-nazis nice folks. And be so honest about their bigotry. No more hiding at least.
richard (denver)
Skip : Guess you missed the ACORN bullhorns in bankers' front yards back in 2010 .. the anti-capitalist OWS mobs in Democrat-Controlled cities...the recent outrageous rhetoric of Democrat Maxine Waters /.. The Indivisible Against Trump / Resistance Democrats .... Sarah Huckabee 's treatment at the Red Hen ? Talk about bigotry and neo-Nazis ....you have targeted the correct issue; just addressed the wrong political party.

Pat Buchanan....an unbelievable racist. Why is there no Nuremberg (2.0) court?
CEC (Pacific Northwest)
Pat, sorry but you're smart enough to know the white extinction boat sailed long ago when the first slave ship from Africa landed on these shores. Fighting the inevitable only exposes you as the sad old racist that you are. Living among "my people" has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with shared values, experiences, and outlook on the future. I only wish you could live long enough to know what implicit bias feels like as a minority white person. It'll be an enlightening, albeit uncomfortable, realization for most white people when it finally happens to them.
Robert (St Louis)
"White extinction anxiety, white displacement anxiety, white minority anxiety" Replace the word "white" with "black" and you have the central theme of every Blow opinion piece.
Discerning (San Diego)
I wonder if Pat Buchanan has ever pondered how America's indigenous population viewed the infestation of European white people that destroyed their culture and stole their land????
atIGRIS (Bhoolokam)
My knee-jerk reaction was to think of this whole issue as a very non-PC issue, but perhaps we are too hard-wired to not have an affinity toward those who look, talk and walk like us! Now, assuming that the anxiety is stemming from a very human instinct to preserve one's own kin, stop being lazy and divisive, and look inward, Mr. Buchanan! Be brave and face the truth! Just like how Trump blames others for the economic troubles of the 'forgotten' you seem to be blaming others for the problems emanating from within your own people. The US is one of the most level playing fields in this world. It's the rich who are to be blamed for sucking the life blood out of your community (as they did from other communities)! And it's your own people to be blamed for how they have reinforced a lazy, destructive culture that is making you wither from within.
Richard conrad (Orlando Fla)
I am lilly white-white as rice-and as caucasian as a person can get and i cant wait til minorities are no longer the minority! Im ASHAMED of how my own race has treated others differently solely based on the color of their skin. Not to mention they vote democratic. The republican party has become a racist, intolerant cesspool of greedy white people. Bring on the minority wave!

We're not worried Chuckie. Perhaps you should be. Ole!
Objectivist (Mass.)
There is a constant element to Blow's articles on race: he always sees evil coming from whites, and never sees good. It's always a conspiracy. Blow asks a lot of questions in his opinion pieces, but the one he always avoids is: Why, does Blow hate white people as much as he does?
richard (denver)
tivist : Agree. Mr. Blow, like many others, has been indoctrinated with this ' anti - all things Western ' rhetoric for decades by the universities and , most recently, by the Biggest Election Sore- Loser Democrat Party and their international Left wing allies and MSM. Sad mess.
Mikeweb (NY, NY)
Actually incorrect: democracy is a purely Western idea, and Mr. Blow is nothing if not greatly pro-democracy. He also happens to believe that people of European descent aren't the only ones who should be allowed to participate in ours. I know, crazy, right?
Mikeweb (NY, NY)
"There is a constant element to Blow's articles on race: he always sees evil coming from white supremacists, and never sees good." There, fixed it for you.
wonder boy (fl)
You state that America will soon be a majority-minority country. Well Mr Blow. Job for you is to learn about the world. Whites are not the majority in the world . They are just the most inventive and hard working race so it seems to you that they are. Take a vacation, China,India, Africa, Middle East that are NOT white countries. So even if I take your myopic view of the world as just the US if whites are not the majority then they are the minority...get it?
DB Cooper (Portland OR)
Trump voters said they felt "left behind". We were told we needed to try to "reach out" to them. They may spew their hatred devoid of facts and evidence, and the rest of us must kowtow to them. I'm through "reaching out." Now that we've seen their rabid support for putting brown skinned infants in cages, we know what really motivates them. No more "reaching out" to racists and xenophobes. We on the left have tried this for the past twenty years, and where has it gotten us? To internment camps for brown people, that's where. But understand this. If we continue to "reach out" to them, this is not where it will end. There is no compromise with pure evil. Appeasement will only hasten waves of ethnic cleansing in this country, the likes of which we've never seen. I don't care that nearly half this nation loves the most bigoted, unfit, mentally unhinged man to ever occupy the Oval Office. Their numbers do not justify their support for this dictator any more than the large numbers of Hitler's rabid supporters justified his actions. And yes, we are there. We are no longer "skirting with" fascism - we are there. Now. We need to start calling out Trump supporters for every racist action they take. They need to understand they will pay a heavy price for trashing our nation. They voted for Trump and they're still in lock step with him. He is where he is because of them. And our gloves need to come off. If we want to save our country, there really is no other choice now.
Ron Wood (Ohio)
I'm White and male... My whiteness and male ness is not in doubt. I feel NO PATHETIC NEED to be RACIST ....nor SEXIST. That said.... there's no EARTHLY reason Trump seems minimally okay to be POTUS. He's a sneaky, lying con artist. A POTUS ougt not BE nor pander t racists, sexists or idiot cults.

Good luck paying for all the freebies without plain Jane white people. I’m sure diversity is going to be very exciting when the USA slumps to South American standards of living. But hey no more racism!

No race is inherently superior to any other race. Each race has its winners and its losers. Looking at it from an American perspective only. Black winner: Obama. Black loser: Mike Tyson. White winner: John McCain. White loser:Donald Trump.

Tom Lehrer, "National Brotherhood Week" One week of every year is designated national brotherhood week....During national brotherhood week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood....I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that. Here's a song about national brotherhood week. Oh, the white folks hate the black folks, And the black folks hate the white folks. To hate all but the right folks Is an old established rule. But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week, Lena Horne and sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek. It's fun to eulogize The people you despise, As long as you don't let 'em in your school. Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks, And the rich folks hate the poor folks. All of my folks hate all of your folks, It's American as apple pie. But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week, New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic. Step up and shake the hand Of someone you can't stand. You can tolerate him if you try. Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics, And the Catholics hate the Protestants, And the Hindus hate the muslems, And everybody hates the Jews. But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week, It's national everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood week. Be nice to people who Are inferior to you. It's only for a week, so have no fear. Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

Finally, an article by Mr. Blow that doesn't annoy me but only makes me sad. The only difference is that Blow is cheering on the darkening of America whereas I am not. I am sure that if the roles had been reversed i.e. if the whites had been the slaves and the blacks the slavers, Blow wouldn't even have a job today as a NY Times propagandist, uh, I mean journalist, uh, I mean, opinion blowhard. Thank you, Mr. Blow, for revealing these alarming statistics which just tells me that Trump is on the right track and that all white people should definitely vote for him and his family in the years ahead.
Jubilee133 (Prattsville, NY)
"As Buchanan wrote in his book, “Suicide of a Superpower,” which got him fired from MSNBC because of its racist overtones:...." You neglected to mention that MSNBC still has the very Rev. Al Sharpton on the air as a contributor. If Buchanan is a racist for writing a book, is Sharpton a liberal hero for his unending racial hucksterism, his Tawana Brawley hoax for which he has never apologized, his responsibility for the deaths of human beings in the anti-Semitic fire which burned out Freddy's in Harlem, etc., etc.? There is something more happening here than a "white resistance" vote for Trump. The Democratic Party now embraces censorship and violence on campuses against diverse opinion, anti-Semitism disguised as anti-Zionism by the likes of Tamika Mallory, head of Black Lives Matter, tolerates photo ops by its leaders with the very Rev. Louis Farrakhan, elected a Farrakhan acolyte, Keith Ellison, as the DNC vice-chair, cannot criticize Harvard for excluding Asian students by quota because it is not "politically correct," and could not even name the Islamic fascist enemy called "ISIS", leaving their defeat to Trump. The Democratic Party lately has taken to comparing the situation on the Southern Border as "comparable to Nazism," which is, of course, an insult to the victims of the Germans, and a lie. (see piece by Jay Winik in WSJ). But the Dems have not compared the separation of families on the Southern Border as comparable to Slavery in the South. Why not?
Bronwyn (Montpelier, VT)
These white racists were absolutely horrified by Barack Obama; he gave them the hives. They are dinosaurs, but the problem is that they are in power in all branches of US government and will do absolutely anything to hold onto it.

Silly Pat Buchanan, all you have to do is identify as a human being rather than a "white human being," and all your problems are solved!

Buchanan ignores the 800-pound gorilla in the room, white America’s responsibility for this alleged “crisis.” Economic immigrants are here because American business loves them. Work them to death, pay them pennies on the dollar, dump them when ICE comes around. They know full well who’s legal and who’s not. Where is Buchanan on employers sanctions for hiring these Untermenschen? Is he angry at Joe Arpaio for not arresting the white businessmen who hire all those evil Mexican workers? For not using civil asset seizure and forfeiture to confiscate the businesses of the white businessmen who hire Mexicans? Nope. Hire Them And They Will Come. Does Buchanan rage against those who created ISIS when we invaded Iraq under false pretenses? Did he warn us that Saddam Hussein effectively and ruthlessly suppressed terrorist groups like al Qaeda? Does condemn the American leaders who developed the foreign policy leading directly to chaos and carnage in Syria which caused millions to flee certain death? Does he denounce the short-sighted American economic policies devastating small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa that cause them to flee the inevitable poverty? No, of course not. He is and remains dead silent. Buchanan is a racist, pure and simple. He is the intellectual heir to the National Socialism of the Third Reich. He merely substitutes “dark skinned” for “Jews” and runs with it. To the cheers of white Americans who brought us the racists lead by Nixon, Reagan, and Trump.

There is utter silence on the topic of prosecuting companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. It is deafening.

Mr. Blow has gone from anti Trump to racist. Protection of the boarder is now protection of white supremacy. Mr. Blow should anyone who wants to come to USA be allowed in? Even if it is millions upon millions of people?

We can't take in a million immigrants a year. But you irresponsibly print this. You hate this country and should not be allowed to be in business.

One of the things that I've noticed about White culture is how fearful it is. White people arrived in North America and proceeded to wipe out the indigenous people. In fact, White people have done that EVERYWHERE they've landed. White people created the most efficient killing system ever with the final solution. White people are the only people to ever drop an atomic bomb and have enough atomic weapons to wipe out the whole world many times over. White people have all the guns, money and laws needed to protect them from anything. Yet they're still soooooooo afraid. Is it because they fear that Brown and Black people will do the same to them, once they're in power?
Patrick McCord (Spokane)
White people do not fear losing the "whiteness" of America. Thats a stupid premise. American's (who happen to be white), love America and do not want our culture undermined by illegal immigrants who do not even speak English. And we should obviously uphold the rule of law and not support millions of illegal immigrants that overwhelm our country. It is a lunatic liberal bleeding heart foolish idea that we have NO LIMITS to our immigration system. How ludicrous! How irresponsible! Democrats CAN NOT LEAD because they are unwise and foolish.
Frank (Boston)
The color-focus of Charles Blow is designed to protect one very powerful Minority - the People with the Green.
D.C. (New York)
"...The Third World invasion of the West..." You mean like what the "Western" (read here as White) world did in the past? Mexico, South Africa, China, India, and the Grand Parade marches on. I do see some differences between the raping of pillaging of the past and the "invasion of the West" that is currently happening. The minorities that is "invading" the West is not pillaging or converting the "West" (again read as White) by the sword. The modern minorities didn't destroy the institutions of the "West" as the "West" did the institutions of the past. Called a cookie a cookie, a cake a cake, and a cracker a cracker. Buchanan and his ilk are racists.
Steve (longisland)
Border control was on the ballot. America voted. Rapists, Gang Bangers and murderers migrating from Mexico creates anxiety for all law abiding citizens. Blow would that we become a third world country. Sorry. That was Hillary's America. She got thrashed. Look it up.

Pat Buchanan is an idiot. This so-called man of God leads by the bully pulpit, instilling fear, and hides under a pseudo-intellectual facade, not ethically bound by the bags of cash that he hauls around. He lives in a post-colonial reality that he hasn't fully realized--that people of color are no longer slaves and forces to be marginalized.
Eric (Seattle)
They have no common sense. It's common sense to live kindly, if for no other reason than that power always changes hands, and that when it does, only the affection people have for you, will cushion you. It's common sense to live fairly, to pass along fair systems. that protect the less powerful, and will guide them when they assume power. Common sense in every enterprise. The loyalty and sympathy we engender in our allies. The quality we demand in the care of the sick and elderly. Every generosity and justice the powerful offer, is a road map to those who are less powerful, when the tables turn. But they are hell bent on making a misery for their ancestors, when they are inevitably no longer the predominant culture, and the most wealthy and fortunate on earth. The MAGA edict is the insistence that our powerful nation receives no grace, benefits, or generosity from anyone. To embrace America-first, white-first policy demands the squandering a treasury, to prove it doesn't exist. Such perversity. White Americans won't be the first civilization to believe prosperity belongs to their race or nationality. That they deserve their luck. They increasingly, indelibly, defining a powerful society as one who treats minorities badly. Of course they are terrified of becoming minorities. Even if they have no instincts of compassion, I wish they had the common sense to read history.

Theory: One of the main reasons that non urban populations suffer from a retrograde 'fear of those who are different, especially those of color' is that their source of news and information comes from Fox News and Sinclair local TV stations. Internet access offers those of us fortunate to have such access, and can afford it, who are able to access multiple sources of news and information. Fear is generated by a combination of ignorance and propaganda. (Here in the burbs though, Internet access is either very bad, or very expensive.) The white's who form Trump's base are gullible, or just plain willfully ignorant. Devoid of reason due to a defunct religious/political ideology they are trapped in a Buchanan like diaspora. The GOP has crossed the line completely now with it's complete support of a bankrupt, fascist leader like Trump. So, D's and I's now have to save the country from this rapidly gaining descent into our own homemade hell. Thank you Charles for keeping us aware.

Why don't you come to Europe, Mr Blow? You can see how your open border nonsense and letting everybody in doesn't work at all. The costs for the welfare systems explode, the social unrest skyrockets and crime has reached levels where in Germany police has been saying that women should no longer go jogging in the evening. Your ludicrous screaming of "racism!" is just laughable. Reality is that mixing of culture and uncontrolled immigration do not work. Europe proves this every day.

Remember that Nazis murdered an American citizen in Charlottesville and Trump described them as "fine people." This tells you everything you need to know about him. Trump supporters are vile and don't deserve to live in America.

Buchanan is out of touch and I don't attach any weight to his asseverations. However, the article is on point, as always from Mr. Blow. To me, the current policies being promulgated by white racists demonstrate their insecurities. The racist administration consists of scared, weak human beings who are abusing their position of power to perpetrate horrors on the defenseless. For now, the victims are Central American families seeking asylum or a better life. Immigrants are a low-hanging fruit, as every bully knows - it's easiest to pick on the defenseless. Buchanan is a like a Hitler apologist, his legacy is primarily being on the wrong side of history.

Charles hits the nail on the head! What a shame that Trump and his ilk have no idea that the majority of the world is non-White so it was inevitable that the US would become majority non-White. I think the facts detailing more White deaths than births is God's way of sticking it to the Trumpists!

The so called "third world" "invasion" of the west, bird brain, began with the so called "first world"'s invasion of the rest of the planet. In any case, don't kid yourself Pat, your not part of the West that includes the enlightenment and science. Your the part of the west that led to hundreds of years of religious war. You have more in common with the Taliban and ISIS than you do with Western Intellectual and Cultural History. Where you would feel actually comfortable is in the Plymouth Bay Colony wearing pointy shoes, wearing one of those bizarre hats, and burning women who think for themselves at the stake as witches. Thanks, but no thanks. The USA is much more interesting place since your kind of person became the minority. I look forward to further progress in that regard...

I bet a lot of Americans would be quite surprised to find their ancestors are not as "white" as they think they are. A little DNA check with Ancestry.com surprised me. "...protecting white dominance, white culture, white majorities and white power." EXACTLY what every ethnic majority or politically in-power ethnic group has ever done and is doing in Africa, no less globally throughout human history. It's called Mother Nature's core wire. I suggest Mr. Blow take a 200 level courses in Cultural Anthropology and Comparative Behavior, and then tour Europe and ask questions of the indigenous people there.

Great point. What liberals need to do is find the nearest Non-White immigrant say from Nigeria, and ask him if he thinks it would be a good idea if his country became majority White through immigration and when he balks, call him a racist.

Surely one needs no more evidence than the current administration to see the complete fallacy of a "white exceptionalism". There is nothing about skin color that determines or limits human capacity in any metric. Read Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel" and it will explain everything.

In the 18th century Benjamin Franklin worried about a German invasion and whether these people were too swarthy to integrate into America. In the 1850s these nativists worried about the Irish. In the 1890s, the Chinese. In the 1920s they worried about the southern and eastern Europeans, wondering whether the Italians were really white; (Scalia, turn in your grave!). Now, here it is again, the old tired saw. Yes, the Anglo Saxon is in decline and that is what is really bothering these people. Get used to it!
Bill Brown (California)
Buchanan's paranoia is hard to take. But Blow's hysteria is equally unsettling. His (& the establishment media's) premature rush to proclaim the end of white America, is fueling racial backlash politics. It's as if if being white is somehow evil so lets pop the champagne corks & celebrate it's demise. Truth ve told Blow has gotten the facts wrong. The Census Bureau has estimated that by 2044 whites won’t be majority. But that same census report projects that by 2060, 68.5% of the population will be white. It’s just that a reasonably large share of the white population will be partially descended from Latin American immigrants. A further 6.2% of the population will belong to “two or more races,” Many of these people will be of predominantly European ancestry & have skin tone and other facial features that fit comfortably within the conventional boundaries of whiteness. If you use this view and let anyone who identifies as white be white, then America remains majority white indefinitely. Reflecting these trends, many whites still claim that they are now or will soon become a minority group. This is only true in the numeric sense. Whites will continue to be the majority in terms of wealth, power and prestige. Whites have amassed large amounts of wealth and other resources that will not become depleted with their declining population counts. While increasing numbers will translate into some political gains among people of color, it's unlkely to change our politics dramaticly.
Scott Manni (Concord, NC)
Nobody cared about immigrants or changing demographics except, racists. No one was concerned about immigrants taking jobs that nobody wanted...until Trump's Fear and Loathing racial politics. These racists were always out there, Trump just cashed in on them.
SP Morten (Virginia)
Thank you for this column.
Irmalinda Belle (St.Paul MN)
Charles, Thank you! We're absolutely being the death throes of the white male hegemony here-- ugly to watch and be suffer through.
Lake Woebegoner (MN)
As always, you are far too close-minded, Mr. Blow, and, even worse, an incendiary pundit who wrecks more inflammatory discouse among us. Eschew color and focus instead on brotherhood. If you go back far enough you will note we are all related, no matter our current colors. We must focus on person instead of periphery.
NWJ (Soap Lake, Wash.)
There is only one race, the human race.
Janet Michael (Silver Spring Maryland)
All the hypocrites who decry the America with less "whiteness" should remember this fact.At the beginning of the Civil War the population of the south was 9 million.Of that number 4 million were slaves. how did the slaves get here? They did not come as immigrants. We want people of color if they work for us, but if they are educated and self sufficient some people have a problem. They need to search their souls and read some history.
Tony (New York City)
Thank you Charles, it is very sad that public leaders who themselves came from white Europe have such disdain for everyone else. Everyone else is people of color and people who don't want to hide in a castle full of hateful white people. Life is a rainbow and they need to become a part of life and if they don't want to, no one will miss them. We will register to vote, vote and march this weekend
Di (California)
Pretty much what people said about those poor, “papist” Irish in the 1840’s.
Darsan54 (Grand Rapids, MI)
Frankly, the way whites in power are acting, we deserve extinction. I am ashamed of what is happening on our borders and especially that there are people celebrating this cruelty.
jmm (USA)
The white man, Patrick Buchanan needs to sit back the READ the book "The Island of the the Center of the World" by Russell Shorto. PAT, Listen-up! America has been a mixed race nation from BEFORE the "start" ( whenever that was). It started in 'Dutch Manhattan', and that called every ethnic to a new beginning, escaped slaves, Euro whites, Hispanic's, Norwegian's, ...You can't name a race of people that were not present in that city. Were talking explorer time Pat, Francis Drake, Henry Hudson, Capt John Smith. I used to listen to you on the Sunday program back in the Nixon ( impeachment years). Thanks Charles!
JJS (Trumpistan)
Can someone please tell #45 that this is The United States of America NOT The United States of Caucasia?
David Gifford (Rehoboth beach, DE 19971)
You have to call it like it is and you are so correct. The only thing missing here is Fox News. It is the network of white supremacy that is helping to fuel all this nonsense. Somehow this network needs to be corralled.
Brujan (Stamford, CT)
I've been syaing for two decades, the Republican Party is a White Christian Party and should change their name to that. That was their focus and priority all along. The fact that folks like the Bushes, McCains, Scarboroughs, Schmidts, et al have only just woken up to this is part of how we got here. They didn't object to "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" or Willie Horton or all the anti-immigrant rhetoric or choosing Sarah Palin for VP or refusing to work with Obama or never condemning the dozens of racist comments about the Obamas made by GOP politicians/appointees/operatives/supporters. They stayed silent for decades of racist filth spewed by their members and leaders. Because they wanted the votes. Well, they've got 'em. Kind of late to wake up to the result of their hard work.
N. Smith (New York City)
Thank you, Mr. Blow. It's way past time to get real with what's at the root of the problem here, and why this president continues to spew his racist rhetoric, disguising it as 'patriotism'. And while we're on the subject, let's not forget who the real minority is here, namely Donald Trump's loyal support base -- that's why he lost the popular election by nealy 4 million votes. That's why the size of his iauguration audience was so small. That's why he only goes to Red states with significant white populations to hold his rallies and hate speeches. Americans need to know this. And remember this....And VOTE!
J M (Purple America)
Is Pat Buchanan fearing that if non-whites become the majority in the US in both numbers and political power that they will engage in a racist agenda against whites? Do not he and all modern far right conservatives and white nationalists believe that racism in the US in 2018 against non-whites is a myth and a liberal conspiracy? If so, what on earth is he afraid of? Oh. Right.
Daniel A. Greenbaum (New York)
There is no doubt that Buchanan is a bigot, a racist and an anti-Semite. He has written that immigration is the way Mexico plans to take back the South West, U.S. Both the right and the left are going crazy about this demographic change. The key is in middle of the article. Non-White Hispanics. Besides leaving out Brazilians, there are a lot of White-Hispanics. By the second and third generation of Hispanics it will be very hard to tell them apart from other White Americans. Also as they fight over education heats up why assume Asians will act or vote like other people of "color?"
brian (boston)
Mr. Blow, you are on the right side of the culture wars; only the culture war itself is the problem and you are part of it. We need another way.
Lynne (Usa)
The changing color and make up of America is EXACTLY the reason we need to protect our rule of law. If the laws are enforced equally, color has no bearing. Unfortunately, we are led by a criminal, traitor and liar. All the things inconsistent wit what makes America great.
Gareth Harris (Albuquerque, NM)
I grew up in deep south Georgia as a white boy , now 77, across the road from the county prison farm.So I saw dixiecrats and foghorn leghorn politicians not only hold my black friends back, but also play my ignorant white friends for fools using racism and hate. I am also thinking of a black friend who only traveled out of Atlanta by flying because he feared driving through the South. He is a PhD physical chemist and professor. When you lose resources like him, you will continue to fall behind. Only a few benefit from this system, at terrific expense to the rest of us of whatever color. The sooner we can get rid of it, the better for all of us.
SC (TX)
Old white people are under threat. From a lack of SSN, Medicare and labor to take care of them b/c white kids don't do that - So that means we'll NEED MORE IMMIGRANTS - to do that work, to pay those taxes -
John Brown (Idaho)
Mr. Blow, Please explain how immigration helps the Poor of America and in your case, how poor "African Americans" are helped by being forced out of their neighborhoods, jobs, schools by the rising "Hispanic Tide".
Able Nommer (Bluefin Texas)
"Eat, drink, and be merry," said White Santa when he returned. And they were joyful. Long-time "white prophet" elf, Pat Buchanan, is enamored with his prophesies; and they are all about division and war. Mr Blow has perfect timing to remind us that it is White Santa Cult doomsdayers, like Pat Buchanan, who invoke the basest feelings of fear, crusade, and retribution. We know the self-annointed radio angel, the 'holy' hosts of Murdoch's News, and the choir of enablers from every position & trade. We know THE SOURCES of wind driving - what Pat Buchanan calls - "the great wave of the future, if the West is to have a future".
Chris (Minneapolis)
I know that the current situation is literally deadly these days but I just can't wrap my head around the fear that whites feel. To me they are simpering little blobs of flesh afraid of their own shadows. I am white. I am white Irish, white Polish, white English, white Norwegian. All of those nationalities thought the world was going to come to an end if they were mixed together. For whites to think they can stop the evolution of humanity is just plain ludicrous. Why must their be a white only anything in the first place?
Robert Shaffer (appalachia)
Racism = Fear = Hatred= the Trump administration.
Rachel Bird (Boston)
As a white, Jewish female approaching age 70, I safely state that I have absolutely no sympathy for those suffering from "white anxiety." Give me a break! In the 1970's, suffering post college and graduate school job discrimination, constant harassament on the job, I am only too happy to watch white men complain about their loss of power-power many never really had and for those that did, never deserved. What we are really watching is an ethnic cleansing by this group of white men-men who simply cannot accept the changes in our culture, society, and norms. And, even among women, who for some reason, have not woken up to realize they too are oppressed by these same white men. This segment of society are too busy playing victim, complaining about everything, but primarily about the fact that they now must compete like the rest of us for jobs, goods and services in a new, modern economy and culture that fortunately, does not worship the ground they walk on. ALL OF US MUST VOTE TO PUSH THIS ADGENDA OUT OF OFFICE!!! NOW!! The future is now and we must all move forward to embrace it. Education to reflect these changes. And for those that cannot or who will not adjust, they are just road kill. Sorry. That is just the way it is. Move over white guys. Your days are done! And, Tweet is not your savior. He will be the end of you.
kathleen cairns (San Luis Obispo Ca)
What, exactly, is "white?" Buchanan and his ilk need to be asked this question each and every time they speak or write about this topic. "White" is a meaningless category.
Patricia (Pasadena)
It doesn't feel meaningless to the people who get excluded from the category.
Mark Siegel (Atlanta)
There is little doubt that Buchanan is and always has been a racist and oh by the way, an anti-Semite. The only difference between him and Trump supporters is that he doesn’t even try to hide is true colors behind code words. This is a sad time for our country.
marian (Philadelphia)
Ideally, in the future, all races will be co-mingled through intermarriage and having mixed race children- thus eliminating any racism since everyone is just a member of the human race with the best cultural aspects of each race. This is happening now and is already resulting in adults like Barrack Obama. We need many, many more Barrack Obamas and no more like the Trump crime family.
Jonathan Arthur (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Mr. Blow oversimplifies the nature of demographics. His myopic "White vs everyone else." analysis is too simplistic.
