I think that they are poor and they don´t have money for eat and drink.
RamónIdeo (29/03/2019)
My group thinks that it is very unfair that they are "enslaved" (if they look to the right they will see a soldier patrolling and keeping an eye on them). We also think that we should have everyone the same rights, not only whites, but all people, black or not, foreigners or not.

@RamónIdeo I'am of the group of Ramon and we also relacioned this picture with 2 SDG: NO HUNGER NO POBERTY

I see the soldier is taking care of the old people. He is doing everything for them. They are old and will die soon so he makes them drink milk.

At first when I looked at the photo I saw a group of elders all gather together drinking milk in traditional clothing . I didn't necessary understand the importance to the picture or the meaning behind it . After reading the article I understand why it was so important for all the elders to gather together in the schoolyard . Education is extremely important especially for countries that don't have the same resources that we do and the fact that these elders care so much about the youth gaining knowledge really shows the dedication of this people. I also noticed that all the men are clothed very similar showing the unity between the men that speaks volumes .
Megan Maiuri (Michigan)
In this picture, I see some elderly men sitting and drinking milk, while a military guard is observing them. I infer that they are of same religion because the men are all wearing the same type of clothing and turban on their heads. Also, I inferred that they are tired and possibly hungry, because they are sitting down and drinking some milk. In addition, they may, also, be at a border line between countries, because there was a security man watching them. Furthermore, they may be in a remote area because there are scarce amounts of trees and other vegetation in the background. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/14/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-pictu... @Megan Maiuri Hi! I totally agree with you, we have the same opinion. The part in which you talk about the religion is very true and I also see the soldier, it also makes me think about the security.
Yulisa Mojica (Dobson )
In this image I could see a few things. The first thing I noticed was that all of them are from the same religion. They all have the same type of clothes on as well. Something else I thought was that they were walking, but stopped somewhere to take a break and drink some milk. There is also sort of a S.W.A.T member behind all of them, which makes me think that he’s either looking over them or after them. To me they look tired and this makes me infer that they have been walking for a while. I see no women, which makes sense that they’re traveling with only men. The men are all also elders.
Andrew (Huntington Beach )
Within the image we can identify half a dozen men, who look to be of Arabic decent possibly Afghanistan of Kashmir Pakistan, drinking milk. Due to their clothing being similar we can infer that they could be in a refugee camp of some kind. We can also infer that the soldier off to the right hand side of the image could be a NATO or UN soldier that is protecting the refugee camp. We may also infer that the men are all elders as they are all old looking and one man caries an expensive looking watch which shows his wealth. Upon more research I found that the men are actually meeting at the opening of a new school. This particular meeting took place when a declaration was happening in an Afghanistan district Laja Mangal. The meeting was to announce the new rule that parents would have to pay 70$ "Half a civil servants monthly salary" for not sending their children to school (New York Times 1).
Keilan (SPHS)
I infer that the U.S troops helped and gave the Muslims milk
Elena (Phoenix )
In the picture, there is strong evidence concluding these men in focus are of Muslim descent. They are drinking milk in the presence of maybe US troops. However, they don't show emotion i can guess they are content with the situation for there is no disdain in their faces or aggression. The man closest has a nice watch which can lead to the inference they aren't of poor status.
Adrian (Peru)
I hat the same thought
Sam (Phoenix, AZ)
1. Arabs are drinking milk that is supplied from a military either in a desert or a military base. I see old Arabs that have a glass of milk that they are drinking which looks like a very dry climate. I also see that the Arabs are sitting with at least two people in a desk so maybe the Arabs are being taught something or have gotten in trouble.
Jason Le (Phoenix)
As can be seen from the picture, Muslim men are being monitored by a US soldier and drinking a white liquid substance (possibly milk). In addition, the depressing expression of the Muslims could indicate displeasure or reluctance. Perhaps, Muslim men are being forced to drink this beverage. On the other hand, this could be a indication of a refuge camp for the homeless/poor. Although, the man on the left appears to have a fancy looking watch. Therefore, we can consider this picture to be staged. In my opinion, US soldiers are patrolling a refuge camp in order to prevent bandits from invading the camp; thus, the men in line are waiting for their turn to drink a glass of milk.
Juan Angel Salinas (phx,az)
This photo shows signs of eastern old folk that seem to be held captive. I can make that inference since there is a guard who is clearly holding a gun and keeping close watch on the men.In their face , they show signs of depression and hunger. They seem to be limited to only milk for lunch , so they are either in a poor country or they arn't being treated very well.
Mac Pangborn (Phoenix, AZ)
I think those people belong to a religious group due to their clothes. Another reason is that a man holds on his hands a religious object similar to a rosary. They seem to be in an arid place. Maybe they are in a refugee, because there is a soldier who cares for them peacefully, since he doesn‘t have weapons. They look happy drinking milk.

From the picture, it can be seen that there is a gathering of men who appear to be of Muslim descent. Due to the photographer's previous work, I believe that this picture was taken in Afghanistan. Currently, in Afghanistan, the Taliban continues to invade major cities as well as continues to attack authorities and citizens. Due to this, I believe that the US Militant is a protective agent of a sort, protecting the gathering group of men. The gathered men appear to be peaceful as they are not carrying any weapons or harmful objects. The gathered men are drinking milk, from further research I can see that milk is a reasonably cheap and effective source of income for many citizens, so buying lots of it at a time of crisis can offer support to the citizens who cannot flee. I think that the meeting could be of anti-Taliban protest coordinators who are in the planning stage of their next form of protest or who are trying to come up with a plan to help already destroyed cities and towns.

In the picture I can see some old asians, who drink milk. It seems they are watching something , that is very important, beacuse there is a police. Perhaps they are watching some kind of demostration, which needs a lot of space , because they are in some kind of desert.
Princess (Earth)
In this picture I think that these people look Muslim and they were in a war and the USA army is helping them through it with support and giving them some milk
patato (u.s.a)
drinking milk with solder in the back and mans are wearing cloth to protect themselves from the sun. I see the milk glass and the solder the table is a mettle bar and the chairs are made out of wood. There is also a man with a whale and a bracelet. There is a cane or a part of a chair.

In this picture I think that the person is a astronaut who is training and who what's to go to space.the people in the back are giving some feedback and they are observing the thing. Also,I think that the person in the back us an scientist.

Kiara (Lima, Perú)
From the picture I observe the following details: 1.All of the men sitting in front of the table seem to be muslims because of their clothes. 2. The man standing on the back could be a soldier of the USA army, and these older men are fed with a dairy product, which could represent protection, help or generosity. 3. They could be disabled, since one loads a crutch.
Grade 3/4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
We did not notice the crutch the one man had - thank-you for pointing it out!

We liked Zara's details in her caption. One detail we liked that Zara noticed was the people in the photo were not carrying any weapons. We noticed that they are not slaves because they do not have cuffs on their wrists. We noticed one of the men was holding onto prayer beads. We think it is cool that Zara researched about milk and how you can earn income. We noticed Zara had a very impressive vocabulary. Good job Zara!
firstgradefun (California)
They are outdoors, maybe in a school. They look poor and are drinking milk. There's a person whose standing there but I don't know why. Maybe he's forcing them to do something. That guy in the background: He's in the navy you can tell because of his clothes. Bullet proof vest with lots of pockets. I don't know if they're poor or not these are nice glasses. He has on a watch. This person here is frowning he looks sad and cold. I wonder about this yellow thing he's holding. I know what that is. The ground looks really bare and the trees look bare. I wonder why the trees are not growing; it might be winter there. I wonder about the table; I see a lot of scratches. I wonder who the first person is to make prayer beads. I wonder if they're Indian because of their clothes.
Grade 3/4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
Hi! We read that you noticed the watch the one man is wearing too! Why do you think he is wearing it/where did he get it?
Mrs. Brownell's class (Cohoes, NY)
In this picture we see people who may be Muslims drinking milk. We think the soldier is from the United States of America. The soldier gave them the milk because they are thirsty and they are displaced from their homes due to conflict.
Grade 3/4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
Hi Mrs.Brownell's Class! We agree with your idea - we also thought that the adults in this photo belong to a religious group, and that maybe the soldier(s) gave them milk because they do not have money to buy their own milk, or because the weather is hot and that made them thirsty! Did you notice the watch the one man is wearing? Why do you think he is wearing it/where did he get it?
Beni Class (Glendale Heights IL)
We noticed that the men are drinking a dairy product, probably made from yogurt and called laban in some parts of the Middle East and Asia. The men are elderly. Based on their headdress and clothing, we know they are Muslim. The soldier in the background doesn't appear to be carrying any weapons, so it seems to us this could be a peaceful mission by the military to provide assistance.
Faith Norn (Yellowknife. NT)
It looks like they're all drinking milk at some kind of table, outside and USA soldiers watching them. Maybe the soldiers gave them milk because they were thirsty? Also they look sort of sad, I don't really know what they're feeling though. I said that because that's kind of what I see in the picture from my perspective. - Faith Norn
Grade 3/4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
Hi Faith! We agree with your idea - we also thought that maybe the soldier(s) gave them milk because they do not have money to buy their own milk, or because the weather is hot and that made them thirsty! What made you think that they looked sad?
Ms. H's class (Asheville, NC)
They are leaders of their community (in the Middle East) and are meeting together and drinking goat milk. The soldier (U.N.) is monitoring the meeting because of discord in the region.
Grade 3/4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
Hi Ms. H's Class! We also though that maybe the men were having a meeting! We thought that the adults in the photo could potentially belong to a religious group, and are meeting to pray for a good life and to be healthy. And since milk is healthy they are drinking to as a special gesture!
Emily (Academic Arts)
It seems to be a group of Islamic teachers enjoying a morning drink before prayer or starting class. The reason why I think this is it looks like it's morning which I can only assume ia time of prayer for Muslims, they look like important figures in their society and the have cups of what appeared to be milk.
Kiara (Lima, Perú)
Why do you think that they are teachers?
cloe (w st paul )
They are outside drinking milk that the USA solders gave them

Diego (Lima, Peru)
I think it’s a group of muslims that is having their last breakfast before getting shot by american soldiers. That’s why they look sad.
Amaya.ideo (spain)
@Diego hello, it is likely that they are eating something but we don't agree with the part of getting a shot by American soldiers, it is true that it can't be but also is strange.
Meli (Peru)
I think they are being helped by the government/army and they are just eating. Maybe they have been rescued.
Maciel (Lima)
I think these are men having breakfast and they are soldiers because the army wanted that all the people from this zone participe in the war
Salomé (Lima,Perú )
I think the soldiers are protecting or helping these people. Maybe they were the ones who gave them the milk. The men who are sitting don‘t look scared and look calm
Ace (America )
I am going to have to agree, maybe they are refugees?
Amaya.ideo (spain)
@Salomé Hello, it is liked that maybe the soldier are protecting or helping this people but also it can be that the soldier is only seeing they because they live in a poor society. I am confused with this part.
Lucia (Perú )
I think they are religious men, who are being protected by an American soldier. They seem to be of the Middle East and because of war they are there. So, at the moment when the photo was taken, they were having breakfast.
ALisabel (Lima)
I think they come from an other Asian Country. The soldier behind maybe comes from the US army. It is like a refuge for Öl der People
Adrian (Peru)
I think the picture takes place in some part of Asia. The old men take part of a christianism group, who were saved by the milicia. Now they are in a safe zone, were they recieve food.
Fabianna (Lima )
I think its in Asia and the men in the picture are having breakfast while praying because the man in the front has something in his hands like a rosary. The army man in the back i think is protecting them
Ace (America )
oh wow, I didn't notice that. Although i think that they where just rescued since none of the other men seem to be praying.
Amaya.ideo (spain)
@Fabianna hi! I am agree with you, I also see the person with a rosary or something like that, and I think about that they are praying. The thing about Asia I didn't notice but now I think that is true .
Stefano Viale (Perú)
I think they are in the middle east and obviously they are having breakfast because of the milk. Although their faces look sad, they are resting. But in my opinion that’s because they have been saved from war by the us army, but that doesn’t mean all their familiars are also saved. On the other side it can be just a comercial=)
Nick (Weirton, WV)
This is located near Turkey and Afghanistan because the ground is a mixture of sand and dirt like a desert. There are older men sitting in the front with milk. They are probably in their late 50's and early 60's. They are learning something or watching something because of the desks they are sitting at. I can see the tree in the back with no leaves so it is the middle of fall. They are wearing a good amount of clothes so that is another way I can tell it is middle of autumn. The men might be taking a citizenship test because the guard isn't pointing the gun at them.
Betty (Boob)
They aint sad or whateva so iguess they jus having breakfast
Daniel (Ct)
This picture seems to be of some sort of military operation. I am assuming based on the position of the old men they are probably prisoners. However, they could also have just been rescued from somewhere because they are being given milk which could be to help them get their strength back.
ALisabel (Lima)
They don‘t seme to be prisioners
Clare (CT)
In the picture, I believe the old men are in a refugee camp and are escaping a war in the Midwest. Also, an American soldier is in the background, watching over the refugees. I believe they are in an American refugee camp, where they are provided with food and drinks.
Mantas M (CT)
I think the people are at a milk tasting event becasue of all the milk
Sean (CT)
This is a picture of Middle Eastern Men that are being punished in some way, because their is a U.S. Army member watching them. They also seem to be sad.
Lindsey (ct)
I think these men are being protected by the American soldier. Maybe they are just having breakfast. Since it is all men and based on their clothing, I think they are practicing some type of religion. The first man also seems like he is counting on a rosary.
Fabianna (Lima )
I think the same thing!
S.Jin (Santa Clara)
This picture makes me think a lot. There are some old men with a young male soldier who looks like to belong the U.S. army. It is hard for Asian people to explain what's going on this picture because Asian usually consider young generations admire those old people. However, senior men in this picture seem uncomfortable. I try to why their expressions are awkward but still confused that it related to the relationship between the U.S. and the Middle East. I also wonder why they drink a cup of milk?
Grade 4 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
The Grade 4s at John Galt had a few ideas about what’s going on in this photo that they wanted to share: - “The people are drinking milk because they are thirsty and milk is good for you. And I think the army guy [soldier] is there to protect them while they drink and relax” - “They are drinking milk to appreciate the cows and goats that gave them meat and milk. I think they are in India or Africa because it looks dry and there aren’t only a few trees” - “I think they are prisoners. In addition, I think the soldier is there to let the prisoners outside to drink milk and get fresh air, because he is watching them” - “I think the men are part of a church group and are doing some sort of activity” - “I think the men aren’t praying so they can have a good life and be healthy, and drinking milk because it is special to them” - “The old men are drinking milk in a field, probably for breakfast. I see a lot of them so it’s probably a meeting”
Grade 3 at John Galt (Guelph, Ontario)
The Grade 3s at John Galt had a few ideas about what’s going on in this photo they wanted to share: - “I think they are having milk to drink at some kind of bar because I can see a table and drinks. I also think it is somewhere hot” - “I think some army people [soldiers] gave the men milk from a cow or goat so they would have something to drink” - “I think the men are drinking milk for good luck and to show respect while they pray, because I can see a prayer necklace” - “They are drinking milk, I can see it on the table. I think they’re in Africa because it is hot” - “I think the men are being talked to because they are sitting down and the military man [soldier] is watching them. Maybe he gave them milk to bribe them to tell him something” - “I think they are drinking milk at a meeting because there’s a lot of people” - “I think these men are homeless or poor because they look tired and old” - “I think some nice soldiers came to this place to give the men food and drinks, because I can see the people have milk and the soldier, and I think he is helping them.”
Marine (ottawa)
On this picture I can see all old people, all men. They are wearing a head wrap, so their religion is like in Muslim. There are no women, no guns. Men are sitting. We can imagine they are in Afghanistan, in the middle east. They are drinking milk, is it for a documentary?
Terrence (Ott )
I think that this is taking place in a third world country that has been evacuated for emergency reasons. I think it’s a third world country because of the environment around the people. I assume that there is no conflict between the soldiers and the people due to the fact that the soldiers probably gave them the milk, everyone seems calm, and the soldier has no weapon. I think there could have been an emergency because the very first person is holding what seems to be prayer beads. Another thing that I noticed is that there is no women, kids or younger men. I think that this could be because in some countries men and women are separated so maybe it happened in an area where the men would work while the women stay at home.
Marcus (Ottawa )
good observation! i agree man!
rodrmuno (Lima,Peru)
Wow! I couldn't have said it better!
Marta (Ottawa)
In this weeks picture you can see a group of people that appear to be from the middle east because of their clothes. Looks like they were in the dessert or somewhere dry. They are sitting and most of them are drinking milk. In the background you can see a man from the army watching them. That makes me think they might have been evacuated or rescued from a country in war by the army and they are now feeding them and helping them.
Shy Sarah (Ottawa)
In this photo, I notice that there is a wall and it looks like hay. I think they used hay because it is heavy to carry and to move around so the soldiers. I also notice there are no women in this photo either which makes me think there might be another station for the women instead. So one could be for men and another for women. This could be a refuge for men and the soldiers are supervising and giving them milk? Speaking of milk the milk that they have it looks thick and creamy. Not only that it looks different from cow milk so it could be Goat milk. Considering there isn't enough grass for the cows. The last thing I notice is the watch on the first guy in the foreground. It could be a gift I am not certain but he could have saved money to get it. I believe that this is a refuge for men that are drinking goat milk and the soldiers are supervisng everyone
Andrew (Canada)
I think it’s goat milk tasting of the local village elders during wartime in Afghanistan due to the soldier standing off to the side watching the tasting go down. I think the milk is goat milk because in Afghanistan goats are the sources of milk because of the rocky landscape, which is not suitable to cows. The reason why I think it’s village elders is because of how old they look and of there clean cloths, showing their social status.
TheCupcakeMaster (Canada)
In the image shown, there are rows of older men sitting, each with a cup of milk in front of them. The milk looks more creamy, so it may be goat milk. Another fact is how cow’s milk is not always a big choice in other parts of the world. There are no women around, so I infer that it is some sort of religious practice. It is taking place outdoors, with the ground being sandy, like a desert, with long bare trees in the background. The land and clothing look to be from the middle east, seeing the scenery. In the background to the right, there is a soldier, and by the uniform, he is an american soldier. I infer that the soldier is there to supervise, or protect the gentlemen. But, he is not holding any sort of weapon, so I think he is more so supervising. The long metal table like structures the cups are resting on is all rusty and older looking. The men are wearing shoes and clean white articles of clothing, so they may not be poor exactly. In the foreground, one man is wearing a silver watch. They are wearing headpieces which are more commonly found in certain religions. To conclude, the man with the watch is also holding prayer beads, which are also part of religions, showing there is a activity going on involving their religion.
Jacob (Ottawa)
This is in the Middle East because of how the people are dressing and because of the landscape. These people are refugees rescued by the army because there is a soldier in the background and people in a place that looks like a military base. The army is helping the men by giving them drinks such as milk and is giving them a place to stay. They are drinking milk because of their religion. The men don’t look happy or sad they just have neutral expressions. They could also be practicing their religion because one of the men is holding a piece of beadwork which could have something to do with the Catholic religion and the soldier is watching them making sure they can practice their religion in peace.
Kaya (north carolina )
so here it looks like a few men are getting a meal. looks like its from a third world country. there is a soldier standing in the back and the men are all drinking milk. the men look like the can be Arabian. I can tell by the turbans they have on their heads and their clothing. I see dead trees in the back so this could be in Egypt or someplace with a desert.
Mahadi Abdourahman (Ottawa, Ontario)
In this picture I think Arab Islamic men are sitting drinking goat milk because it seems like the milk is thicker. These men seemed to be in poverty but the clothing they are wearing confirmed that they are wearing islamic traditional clothes because in islamic religion Prophet Muhammad was said to dislike the color red and richly patterned fabrics finding them distracting during prayer. They are in a Middle eastern country because to the sand and the arab men sitting.
Marcus (Ottawa )
I agree that may be true
yousef (Ottawa)
In this picture I see old people tasting goat milk. In the background there is a soldier and they are in Afghanistan on a desert and they are sitting on old chairs with a old table. There head is wrapped with something and they might be poor, but their clothes look so clean and the guy at the front is wearing a watch. On the desert there are no grass but there are trees.
Marcus (Ottawa )
I think that these men are at some type of military base the reason there there is probably they’re homes were probably blown up during a war and the military decided to take them too there base and give them food and drinks.Another possibility is that these men don’t have homes and the military decided to take them to their base and provide them with food and drinks.
Talal (SMS)
These middle eastern men are tired of walking in a caravan. They are drinking milf for refreshment.
zoe (ottawa)
what i think is going on in this photo is a bunch of men from a third world country is getting a meal. I think its a third world country because the ground is very dusty and there is a soldier standing in the back round. They way the men are dressed is they may be poor and living in a camp. They are drinking milk probably they are getting feed and they get milk as there dessert. I’ve noticed a they tables they milk glasses are on are very rusty. There are no women around so it may be a private church ceremony. The man right as the front as a watch on his wrist so i think he solid someone something so he could get money for a watch. I think the tree in the back is dead. I see a brick wall made of sand in the back where the tree is. So i think they are praying at a special camp without women. That’s what i think is going on in this photo.

It is a concentration camp for terrorists. But the army still feeds them and takes care of them. That way they can help us with fighting terrorists.

On May 14, 2018, about 20 old men were drinking milk in Iraq. The old men were having a race to see who could drink their cup of milk the fastest. Who ever won would take home a jug of milk to their families. The solider in the back was monitoring the area to make sure no one was coming to attack the old men.
Amaya.ideo (spain)
@Erin Hello! I read this comment and I am not agree, I think that it might be but is very strange because if they were doing a race for drink milk, why are they with bad faces?
Mrs. Lang (South River, NJ)
We see a group of men in Arabic dress, drinking some form of milk. They could be on a military base, possibly for their own protection. There is a man in military clothes watching them; he might be from the US. This does not take place in the United States. It is fall or winter; we know this because the trees are bare.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you for your comment, @Mrs. Lang and welcome to the conversation! It sounds like you all are really thoroughly examining this composition, calling our attention to the foreground as well as the background. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you wonder about the setting, thinking that this could be outside of the U.S. on what you're guessing could be a military base?
Nathan (SMS)
The men in the picture all sitting in row are from a country in the middle east. You can tell they are because all dressed in clothing from that part of the world. I infer that they are at an embassy because of the solider in the background.
Taylor (St. Paul, MN)
I think this picture was taken somewhere in Southwest Asia, such as Saudi Arabia. I think this because the background shows dusty ground and trees with no leaves, which would indicate a dry climate. The people in the photo are wearing clothes that could be worn in this region as well. I think the people in the photo are celebrating Ramadan and they are breaking their fast which is why they are at a table together. Ramadan is starting soon so it would be a relevant thing to include in the picture and since Islam is a major religion in Southwest Asia I think it is likely that this is where the photo was taken.
Mia D. (AOSE)
In this image I see a line of elderly men sitting down drinking glasses of milk. All of the men are wearing a similar white headwrap which signifies a sense of unity. Perhaps, they are all members of a particular group or religion. Judging by the dirt and emptiness of the landscape, I know that this is a barren area. Also seen in the background is what appears to be a military officer. This leads me to believe that this photo was taken in a dangerous and/or militarily-present area. One question did provoke in my mind: Why are they drinking milk? Perhaps, they do not have access to nutrients such as milk and this is apart of a project in which they can finally receive them. Also, due to their apparent old age, milk would be a good beverage for them to drink.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment this morning, @Mia D! You're basing many of your inferences on details you noticed the image, allowing us to see evidence to support what you're talking about. It sounds like you're also uncertain about the presence of milk in this image, and that you're puzzling through it. Keep up the close looking! What more can we find?
Brandon (SMS)
In this picture, there appears to be older men in rows, drinking what appears to be milk. They look like they are not from the U.S. , but from foreign countries. There is a soldier at the end of the first row ( Most likely American). The group of older men sitting in the rows, are most likely drinking the milk because of their religion.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to the conversation, @Brandon! It sounds like you're really wondering about the nationality of the individuals here, saying that some figures seem American, while other figures seem like they are from other countries. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you curious about this?
Haleigh (SMS)
The story behind this picture can be many things. But, in this picture it looks like there are men drinking milk. My opinion behind this picture seems to be that someone brought these men milk to drink. The reason behind this is that they might not of had anything healthy to drink. Another reason is that they are having breakfast and this is the type of bar that they have in their country. But, there can be many stories behind this photo.
Brooke (SMS)
In this picture the U.S. army is giving warm milk and food to people in Afghanistan that have no home. The men are drinking their warm glasses of milk that they were given for breakfast. These men come to this army base everyday morning and night to have a meal that they usually do not get.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome, @Brooke! It really sounds like you're coming up with a story for why the figures in the foreground are drinking what you think might be milk, and why the figure in the background is there. I wonder if you can tell us more - what do you see that makes you say the army might come on a regular schedule every morning to help these people?
Will (SMS)
In the picture, those men have been arrested by the army. They are being supervised by a soldier and are given little to eat.
Lauren K. (AOSE)
What makes you think they were arrested? Where do you think this photo was taken? If they have been arrested, what do you think they were arrested for?
Mikayla (SMS)
In this picture the men are drinking milk. They have been traveling and have been very thirsty. They didn't have anything to drink until they ran into another group of people and they gave them the milk.
Daniel M. (Winnetonka HS )
In this picture, I see several men drinking glasses of milk. This picture seems to take place in the Middle East because of the style of clothing.
Lauren K. (AOSE)
What do you think they are doing there? Why are they there? Who is the man in the background? Why are they drinking milk? Are they gathered for a reason?
Hunter (SMS)
These men are drinking milk because of their religion.Their religion drinking milk makes the body stronger so they live longer. They do this every year so they can live another year. The sequence goes from the oldest to the youngest.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to this morning's discussion, @Hunter. Thanks for your comment! You are noticing the figures are drinking something you think might milk, and you're wondering about why they might be doing so. You've also noticed the figures appear to be arranged by age. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you say these men are drinking milk because of their religion?
Sean (CT)
I Agree
Mario (SMS)
These men are from a middle eastern country such as Iraq. They are most likely refugees being rescued by the army. They are being held somewhere until a plane/helicopter comes and picks them up. They are drinking milk because they are injured from previous experiences and are drinking milk because milk heals bones and makes your bones stronger.
Drew (SMS)
I think they are foreign refugees being fed by missonary's . This is probably are foreign country.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you for your comments thus far, everyone! I am hearing many different opinions on what might be going on this image, as well as some overlapping thoughts! @Cassidy, @Blake Barnes, and @Rilynn M. are all considering the setting, and are wondering if this might be in the Middle East, and @Parker thinks more specifically this might be set in Iraq. Several of you are wondering about who these figures might be. @Salma Ahmed is wondering if this is a refugee camp and @Parker is wondering if these are freed prisoners. @Abby Edson notes they might be religious practitioners. I am also hearing lots of comments that are calling our attention to the presence and content of the glasses. @ Izabella Montelongo, @Stefani M., and @Audrey all agree that it might be milk. @Brody Burnette elaborates that it might be milk specifically from a goat, and @Kaitlyn G wonders if it might be for a certain religious ceremony. Let’s keep looking back at the image together. What do you see that makes you say your comment? And what more can we find?
Danielle (whs)
just some nice people having milk outside. doesn't seem to be that significant. maybe it's a peace treaty of the type of milk they buy. or maybe it's the annual milk tasting ceremony.
Brady J. (Winnetonka HS, KCMO)
A lot of Middle East men are gathered around so they can drink a glass of milk while being watched or protected by the US army man
Audrey (None of your business)
In this picture, there are many elderly men wearing turbans and drinking milk. I say this beause they all seem late 50's or older and the liquid they are consuming is more white than I am.
Hayleigh C. (Winnetonka High School)
This could be some kind of religious gatherings. These men are wearing turbans while drinking milk. There is what looks like an American soldier standing int he background but I don't know what for. They are all older men together drinking milk. maybe they are just gathering up to celebrate or something idk.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment this morning, @Hayleigh C.! It sounds like you're agreeing with @Danielle that perhaps a sort of celebration is going on. @Hayleigh C. you are wondering if this is a religious event, and @Danielle, you're thinking it might be a peace treaty. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you say this might be a significant event of some kind? And what more can we find?
Blake Barnes (Winnetonka HS KCMO)
In this picture, there are several men drinking what looks to be milk. I am going to assume that this picture was taken in the Middle East because the men are wearing turbans. The other man looks like a soldier or some type of guard stationed in this area.
Stefani M. (WHS KC MO )
There are many men in this image that are drinking a liquid that looks like milk on a thin table. I believe the men are middle-eastern because of the way they are dressed and the environment that is around them. There is a man in the back dressed in camo with a green bulletproof vest. He seems to be an American soldier watching over them drinking.
Cassidy (WHS)
In this picture, there are a lot of men sitting and drinking something that could possibly be milk out of glasses. Its papers to be in the Middle East based on their clothing. They all seem to be older and are all looking to the camera.
Izabella Montelongo (Winnetonka Highschool)
In this picture you can see a group of men sitting at a table, drinking some white liquid. It looks to be milk. They look tired and worn down. They seem to be wearing a lot of white.
Rilynn M. (Winnetonka HS)
In this picture appears to be a bunch of men. Sitting down and drinking milk and ate something with it because they also have plates. It's somewhere in the Middle east and there is a military personal I the corner watching them.
Brody Burnette (Winnetonka, MO)
the people in this photo are arabs. the they are sitting drinking goat milk. they look outside at a table
Mia D. (AOSE)
What specific details about this picture lead you to believe that the men pictured are Arabian?
Salma Ahmed (Missouri)
In this picture, I have notice that it is taken at a refugee camp and they drinking milk.
Mia D. (AOSE)
I like how you used the details in the image to make an inference as to where these men were located at the time the photo was taken. Why do you think they were drinking milk? What details from the image support this claim?
Megan (Winnetonka)
In this picture, there appears to be several old men drinking glasses of milk. They are wearing turbans. It looks like a ritual or religious ceremony. There is a young man in the background that looks like a soldier from America and he's wearing camouflage. The man in the front is wearing a necklace and a watch. It looks like they are wearing the same shoes.
Parker (Winnetonka HS, MO)
Looking at the picture, I can see a row of older men who appear to be from a foreign country like Iraq, drinking what seems to be milk. There is what appears to be a soldier (assumedly American) standing at the end of the row of men. I can infer that the older men were prisoners of a terrorist group (such as ISIS) who were freed by American soldiers and are being fed.
Lauren K. (AOSE)
This photo was taken someplace in the Middle East. I can tell because of the clothing the men are wearing and their head garments. Based on their clothing, I think they are a part of a religious group, possibly Muslim. The men in this photo are drinking milk. This might be a religious ceremony or just a meeting. There is a man standing on the side who looks like he is in the military based on his camouflage outfit and vest. The man nearest the camera is half smiling so he seems to be happy to be here.
Abby Edson (AOSE)
In this picture, there are many men that are sitting at a table drinking what appears to be milk. In the background, there is a man in a US army uniform who is standing in the back of the picture. When you look closer at the photo, you will notice that the man in the front is holding a string of beads that looks like it could be a rosary beads, which is what one prays with in the Catholic religion. This leads me to believe that this is a prayer service/ritual of some sort that the men practicein their religion. The man in the background is there to overlook the srevice and make sure that the men are able to peacefully practice their religion.
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
In this picture, there appears to be several men drinking glasses of what looks like milk. This picture is most likely occurring somewhere in the Middle East because the men look foreign and are dressed in turbans, which many men in the Middle East wear. Also, a man in the background is standing in the corner wearing a camouflaged outfit and what appears to be a green bulletproof vest. This man could possibly be an America soldier stationed in the Middle East. The men could be drinking milk together as a refreshment or some sort of religious gathering.
hannah (sms)
This picture is very descriptive but simple, so to me that makes it easier to come up with a inference about whats going on. My inference is that some soldiers or a military group found these people who may be sick and weak, and set up a sitting area for them to drink milk. Milk makes you very strong and healthy, so that would be a wise choice for these men.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks @hannah for your thoughts this morning! It sounds like you're intrigued by the perceived simplicity of this image. You're inferring that the military might be assisting the figures in the foreground, based on what you know about the nutritious properties of milk, which you're thinking they might be drinking. I wonder if you can tell me more - what do you see that makes you say the military might have established this area of nutrition?
Abby Edson (AOSE)
This is a good analysis. Can you tell us anything else about either what some of the men are holding or even what kind of religion theu could be practicing?
Cara M (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, many men are sitting down drinking milk. To start, the men are sitting behind, what seems like, desks. They are drinking glasses of milk, and their facial expressions show relaxation. They aren't frowning, but they aren't smiling, they just look neutral, no emotion. The men are wearing clothing that may remind some of the Middle East. In the background, there is a man, of a different ethnicity, who is wearing an Army uniform. Could the Middle Eastern men possibly be criminals who the Army men captured? Or are they looking to leave there country and the Army men are helping them? The left-most man in the picture is holding what seems to be a necklace. Maybe this is something that he is bringing to remind him of his home on this new journey of his life.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome, @Cara M, to this morning's discussion. It sounds like you're focusing on the figures in the foreground - noting what they're doing and how they appear to feel. You're inferring that the presence of the man behind them is significant - but I hear you puzzling through exactly what he is doing there. What do you see that makes you wonder if he is either helping them or imprisoning them?
CiaraAOSE (New Jersey)
In this picture, several older men are sitting at a table drinking what appears to be milk. In the background, a man in an army uniform looks to be standing guard. When I look closer at the photo, I can see that the man in the foreground is holding a string of beads that look like rosary beads in his hands. This leads me to believe that this is some sort of prayer service/ritual that the men practice through their religion. The man in the background is there to stand guard and make sure the religious men are able to peacefully practice their religion.
Leo (SOS)
I'm not really sure what is going on here but I have an idea of where it may be. By the way the men are dressed and how the background looks it may be in the somewhere in the middle east. They may be having a religious gathering something that may give this away is that the man on the left has what may be prayer beads.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for sharing with us your guesses on this image, @Leo, even though it sounds like you're still a little uncertain about what might be going on! We can make meaning from it together. I hear you examining small details, like what you perceive to be prayer beads, as well as larger clues, like the clothing and the background, to guess this might be a religious event taking place somewhere in the Middle East. Let's keep looking - what do you see that makes you say the object being held by the man might be prayer beads? And what more can we find?
aiden (sms)
in this photo a group a iraqi men are setting down enjoying a cup of milk before their prayer. the group is at an outside church i would presume and is enjoying some cream before their prayer. mostly they are fromthe good part
danielle AOSE (New Jersey)
In this picture, I see many men who appear to be sitting drinking something out of a glass. The man look to be part of a religious or social group, because they are all dressed similarly and are wearing cloth over their heads. The ones in the front are drinking what looks to be milk, and there are many men behind them as well. I think this is a religious ritual of some sort. Where the men of the religion gather and do certain actions and rituals.
Abby Edson (AOSE)
Very good Danielle! What can you infer about what the front man is holdong in his hands?
Faith (sms)
In this picture, these old men have escaped their country. They arrived to a village that took them in. They took this picture because it is the first time they had something on their stomach for days.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Faith - it sounds like you're agreeing with @Montana - you're both guessing about the story taking place here, and wondering if these figures are in need of nutrition. I'd love to know more from both of you - what do you see that makes you say this might be the first time they have had something on their stomach for days?

These men are having their class reunion. The are all sitting down together with glasses of milk. They are revisiting not only for a reunion but to see the teacher that has just battled cancer. He has been battling it since these men were in school.
Cara M (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
Why do you think this is a class reunion? What leads you to think that they had a teacher that has, specifically, been battling cancer since they were in school?
Jordan Villanueva (Dallas NC)
In this picture there appears to be a group of men sitting and drinking milk. They appear to be middle eastern due to the head garments and clothing they are in. In the background there is what I presume to be soldier as he has on a camouflage uniform and vest. Maybe they are civilians he is protecting or possibly war criminals that are being held prisoner.
Montana (SMS)
In this picture a group of older men are drinking milk. They have been starving and dehydrated for a long time. So a group of army men went to help them out. They fed them and gave them things to drink. That is what is happening in this picture.
danielle AOSE (New Jersey)
what lead you to believe that they are dehydrated?
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
It is interesting to think that they are thirsty and starving - what makes you think that?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you for your original comment this morning, @Montana, and thanks for your responses, @Kaitlyn G and @danielle AOSE! It sounds like you are all focused on the perceived well-being of these figures, with @Montana, you wondering if they have been deprived of nutrients, and @Kaitlyn G and @danielle AOSE questioning that claim. Let's keep looking together! What more can we find?
Riley (SMS)
These may have been refugees trying to escape from their country. They met up with military forces and got something to drink and a place to rest. Their clothes look clean and they are on a rusty metal bench.
Daphne (Cruz)
In this picture there is a group of men, who look like they are from the middle east. They look like they are being watched by a soldier from another countries. It may be a little cold as well, looking at their vestments, also the man closest the camera has some beads in his hands, which might be for religious purposes, such as something similar to a rosary for Catholics.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Daphne - thank you for sharing your thoughts with us this morning! You are wondering about the setting of this image, and thinking about the relationship between the figure in the background and those in the foreground. You've also noticed a small detail which you're thinking looks like a rosary in Catholic practice. I'd love to know more - what do you see that makes you say this object reminds you of the rosary, or might have other religious functions?
danielle AOSE (New Jersey)
what lead you to believe the men are from the middle east?
Lauren P. (NOGA)
There is a group of older middle eastern men, which I can tell because of their clothing, sitting at some type of desk outside, drinking milk. They are being watched by a man in a military uniform. From the facial expressions it look as though they are enjoying the milk.
Caitlyn Harrelson (Dallas )
In this image I see a group of elderly men, who could potentially be refugees of a middle eastern country and appear to be wearing clothing suited for their culture, maybe for religious purposes. They are seated at a rusted metal table and are drinking milk out of a glass cup. Behind the group of men, is a soldier who is watching them. The area they are in looks very dry and destitute.
William Ronan (Noga)
This picture appears to take place somewhere in the Middle East, based on the majority of people in this photo. This pictures a group of Middle Eastern men drinking milk under the watchful eye of someone who appears to be a soldier, perhaps American based on his stature. There are many men in this picture, they are not bound by handcuffs so they must not be prisoners.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment today, @William Ronan! It sounds like you're grouping the people in the foreground together, wondering if they live somewhere in the Middle East. I am also hearing you notice a difference between them and the figure in the background, wondering if he might be American. Let's keep looking at the image together - what more can we find?
CiaraAOSE (New Jersey)
How do you know that this photo was taken in the Middle East? Why do you think the men in the photo are drinking milk? For some sort of ritual? Also, why is there a man standing guard if these men are not prisoners?
Baley H (dallas)
In this picture i See a group of what looks to be village elders at a table . This is likely somewhere in the middle east based on their clothing. In the background you can see a soldiers in what looks like flektarn pattern camo which is used by the german army. This is likely in Afghanistan and a meeting between the elders and local troops.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts this morning, @Baley H. You're looking closely at details like the specific design of the uniform of the figure in the background and the clothing of the figures in the foreground. What do you see that makes you say this might be a meeting?
reggie (toronto)
I see a group of older men who looks like they came from India or somewhere in the Middle East. It seems like they are drinking milk provided by a soldier who is standing behind all of them. I think for them milk is a delicacy and that they don't get to drink milk as often as other people do and maybe milk is to expensive for them to buy. I think that milk would be expensive for them because it seems like they live in a very dry country and that there is not much grass for the cows to eat and have a good amount of milk produced for the population to be cheap.
shamus crawford (toronto canada)
I think this picture is of a group of Taliban fighters that have been capture and are forced to drink milk until they give up information. The evidence that supports my conclusion is that there is a soldier in the background and he looks menacing and also that cows milk is sometimes found in middle eastern country's like Afghanistan and Pakistan. The evidence that doesn't support my conclusion is that they appear to be happy although this could just be that its their first glass. I would also be interested in learning why there are haystacks behind the soldier.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome, @shamus crawford, to the conversation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us today! Like @Ty, you're wondering if the figures in the foreground are undergoing some sort of punishment. You're noticing the man in the background seems menacing to you, and their facial expressions imply unhappiness. @Ty is even wondering what will happen after this image - and I hear you thinking that maybe they will resume work. I'd love to know more from you both - what do you see that makes you say they might have a negative relationship with the figure in the background? And what more can we find?
Kaitlyn G (AOSE)
What makes you think that these men are specifically Taliban, and that they are fighters and not just civilians?
Luke (NOGA)
In this picture we see a group of elderly men who seem to be middle eastern, sitting at some tables as a soldier stands by watching. The men are drinking milk it looks like and seem to be enjoying it.

These people are given something to drink on a rusty metal piece that is used as a table. The military is watching them over so they can only have a certain time to have a break. Once they're done they must go back to work until the day is over. yeet
Meme Queen (London)
There are multiple men sitting and drinking what appears to be milk. There’s also someone from the military in the back. It also appears that they all have plates so maybe they also had food. Their clothes look too clean for them to be refugees and one of the men in the front has a watch. So I believe that this is possibly some sort of meeting the military is having with some people who are higher up in an area near war.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to this morning's discussion @Meme Queen. You have noticed small details like the apparent cleanliness of the clothing and the watch on one of the men, and I hear you wondering about who these figures might be. You're also wondering about the setting, guessing this place might be close to a war zone. I would love to know more - what do you see that makes you say that?
Salty Potato (Nigeria)
I think that the group of men in the picture are waiting to be questioned by U.S military and are enjoying the milk they were given while they wait. I think the soldiers are looking for members of the Taliban in a village that might be controlled by them since all the men have full grown beards (a requirement when living under their rule) and because there are only men in the crown. Most of the people there seem unhappy with their current situation but some people (like the guy next to the man closest to the camera) are enjoying the refreshments that were given to them. I can also see that there is a brick wall in the back surrounding them and wires overhead.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for your comment this morning, @Salty Potato. You're looking deeply throughout the image, noticing the details of the setting in the background and paying attention to the emotions of the figures in the foreground. It sounds like you're also associating their clothing with a specific culture - you're wondering if this might be a country that is under religious rule. What do you see that makes you say they might be waiting to be questioned by the U.S. military? And what more can we find?
Hugh Mungus (KFC)
I believe that this picture depicts some kind of recovery camp ran by the military. I would also guess that the photo was took in a place like Afghanistan. Some details that support my thought: - Downcast expressions - Dry area - Soldier in the background - Elderly men wearing religious clothing
Hockey123 (Toronto )
This picture looks like a place for homeless to have food and it is provided by an army. What makes me say this is there is a man in the right of the picture that looks like he is wearing a bullet proof vest and camouflage which is something that someone in the army would wear. All of the people at the table look sad except the one closest to the camera. They all are having milk and something else as well because there are plates on the table. They might have lost their homes in the war because it doesn’t look like there is much going on in the background. I think this is taken place in Afghanistan because there has been a lot of war there lately and a lot of Canadian and American soldiers go there for combat. Also from the picture it look dry and hot because the grass is not very green.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks for joining this morning's discussion, @Hockey123. It sounds like you are agreeing with others who are wondering if military is providing benefits to the group of people in the foreground. @Givemecookiesplz thinks they are drinking something that will give them sustenance. @reggie thinks the figure who might be a soldier has provided the drink for them. @Jordan Villanueva wonders if the armed figure is protecting those in the foreground. Let's delve deeper - what do you see that makes you say the figure in the background might be supporting them in some positive way? And what more can we find?
Givemecookiesplz (dank memes)
It looks like a group of men possibly refugees drinking milk as a treat or because they could be low on calcium on some metal benches. They have a soldier watching over them. The area they are sitting is sandy but behind them is more grassy and even has some trees. The man on the far left has a watch and some beads. The glasses they are drinking out of are fancy looking so I think it must be a something they don't get very often.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
This picture gives us lots of things to think about! You’ve posed many questions this morning. Just who are these men and what are they doing here? Are they refugees, workers, prisoners, religious followers, criminals? Why are they drinking that white substance/milk? What’s up with the “table-like” piece of furniture in front of them. Keep looking. Keep coming up with ideas. Go back to the image and find evidence to back up your ideas. Remember the reveal is Thursday afternoon.

This group of elderly people are in the Middle East, and they are drinking milk. They're drinking milk so that they can live longer and get their bone muscle stronger. These elderly people need the milk so that they can be healthy and be strong. They might be drinking milk for National Milk Day.

Jadin Douglas (WHS KCMO)
It looks like these men are immigrants from a part in the Mid East and are in a camp ran by a European military that has limited supplies for them or they could be fasting because of their religion.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jadin Douglas, thanks for joining us today. So glad you can look at this and see some different interpretations. I'm wondering about the ideas of fasting or limited supplies. What evidence can you find for either of these ideas in the picture?
Ladonya (Winnetonka High School,KCMO)
it appears to be that there are a group of men of a small religion that are enjoying a glass of milk. I think the milk holds importance and symbolism to the men's religion.

I think that this is some religious thing for Muslims and I also see that there drinking milk at a table. it also looks like shier learning something its all men. they could be taking brake from hard labor. theres is also a soldier in the background thats standing looking like he's either guarding or protecting these men.

Holly H (MO)
In this picture, I see a group of elderly men drinking milk. From the looks of their clothing, I could perhaps suggest that they are Middle Eastern, which would make sense as the cow is a sacred animal in that general region. The men are sitting down with a rusted bench-like table to hold their beverages. To tie this all together, I believe this to be some sort of watch or camp. There has to be a reason that these men are all gathered together.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Holly H, thanks for posting today. This is indeed a curious picture/ What is this bench-like table. Why are these men here? You make a connection between the Middle East and sacred cows. I think it would be beneficial for you to check that connection out on the internet.

@jordan madison, thanks for posting today. I'm wondering what you see that makes you say the soldier is American?
Mercedes Lashbrook (Winnketonka high school kcmo)
In this picture , it appears that these men are drinking milk. From what their wearing and the thing that's in front of them acting as a table, it seems like they could be from a country that have some kind of religious ceremony, or something they celebrate that uses work.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@ Mercedes Lashbrook, thanks for posting today. Would you please explain a bit more about the idea of celebrating something that "uses work." Thanks.
Roda Jama (winnetonka highschool )
the people in this photo appear to be muslim because of the clothing they are wearing, from my background knowledge i know that ramadan is coming up and maybe they are starting to get together. they look like they're in a plain field i also see a solider so maybe they are being held there?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Roda Jama, thanks for joining us today. Some people have suggested that these men may be Buddhists or Sikhs or Hindus. Please look again and see if you can find more evidence for your conjecture.
Hugh Mungus (KFC)
I'm not sure about them being held there, but my guess would be that they are going through some kind of recovery.
Gavin J (Winnetonka High School, Kansas City, MO)
In this picture, there appears to be a group of elderly people, possibly from some Middle-Eastern religion. The people seem to be drinking milk at a rusty, metal object that is being used as a table. There is someone in the military off to the side, keeping watch over them. The elderly could be taking a break from their work, which would explain the military person.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Gavin J, thanks for posting today. You've looked carefully at the image. I'm a bit curious about your comment related to the men working and the military presence. Would you pease explain why these two ideas are connected in your mind and from the image.
QuinnG (AOSE)
This is a photo that seems like it was captured somewhere in he Middle East. I believe this because the men are dressed in attire that one would commonly see in the Middle East. Also, there are many wars going on there, and there is a soldier in the distance. This could be some sort of religious gathering. Maybe, the army is providing these men with food and drinks, because they all have glasses of milk on small plates.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@QuinnG, thanks for joining the discussion today. Your use of the term"captured" seems very apropos for this picture. You've offered many different interpretations. Please go back and look at the image. What details back up any of your ideas. What evidence can you find for your various interpretations.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Yudita thinks the men could be taking a milk break from their work. @Zach suggests the men are taking a class outside. Some have suggested this is some kind of religious ceremony in which milk is involved. Your peers have posted that they are refugees or prisoners. Please look again. Consider some of these different options and find clues in the picture that give evidence for your ideas.
Kristy (sms)
I think that the old men ar gathering for a meeting for religous reasons and also think that that they live in africa are somewhere near africa. They look like they are outside and that they are and they also look like they are at some kind of ceremony. They all look the same age, they look like they are around 50-60 years old. Thehy are all hold beads which could also relate to there religous group or other reasons
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Kristy, thanks for joining us this morning. I'm wondering what you see that suggests the setting for this is Africa?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Thank you for joining in the discussion this morning. Many of you are considering the object in front of the men. @Zach believes these men may be involved in some kind of class, sitting at long desks. Others believe these are table for distributing food. Alexis Hernandez comments that this is a, “group of old men sitting at a table like structure.” One commenter suggested this is some kind of “looking table.” You’re wondering if the table-like object is wood or metal? Keep looking. Keep those ideas coming.
Technic Ally (Toronto)
I believe that what we have here is an outdoor Starbucks desert location that is out of coffee beans and is serving lattes with milk only.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Technic Ally, indeed. I appreciate the humor. It is indeed odd for a group of men to be drinking milk in glass cups with saucers in the dessert. What do you make of it?
Gina (AOSE)
This picture seems to be of some kind of religious group. All the men are of similar age and are wearing similar garments. Additionally, the man in the front right seems to be holding beads, which could have religious importance. The soldier standing in the background suggests that this photo was taken in an area with outside military presence; possibly the Middle East. The men seem to be drinking milk, which could be part of a ceremony or could just be something they're drinking.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Gina, thanks for joining us this morning. You've done some careful looking and conjecturing. Your use of words like "possibly," "seems," "could," shows you're willing to think about multiple interpretations for this picture--a sign of mental flexibility.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Good morning. Glad you could join us today as we try to make meaning from this picture. Many of you have noted the outdoor setting of the picture. @Patrick posits it may be a refugee camp or a military base; hence the male figure in the background may be a US soldier. @Andrew Caffrey suggests the men may be Sikhs. Others have described the men as Arabs, Muslims, or seniors from the Middle East. There appears to be a consensus that the gentlemen are drinking milk. The term “Mala”(Buddhist or Hindu prayer beads) has also been introduced by @Katelyn AOSE in reference to what the gentleman in the foreground is holding in his hand. Keep looking. Keep thinking. Please remember to connect with others who are posting.
Gaby Rodriguez (Winnetonka)
In the picture, I see many men that are holding glasses of what looks like milk and it looks like they're sitting outside. They might all be from the same religion and they're celebrating in some way. The tables look old and are made of steel.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Gaby Rodriguez, thanks for joining us this morning. I'm wondering what you see that suggests this could be a group of men celebrating?
Jordon P (WHS )
In this photo I see multiple older men, they look as if they could be middle eastern maybe. I also noticed there is a soldier in the back which leads me to believe that they might be being watched or protected by him. I don't what to really think this picture is pretty mind boggling
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jordon P, this is indeed a perplexing image. You've noticed many things about what's going on. Go back and look again. See if you can answer any questions for yourself.
Essence Bradford (WHS)
In this photo, there are a bunch of what seems to be Islamic elderly men drinking milk. I say that they're Islamic because they are all dressed alike, they're all wearing white turbans. I think that they could be at some type of refugee camp because of the soldier that's standing by them. He seems as if he's watching them.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Essence Bradford, thanks for joining the discussion. Some have suggested that the soldier is watching the men because they are criminals. You are suggesting they are refugees and are being watched for protective measures. What do you see the the picture that would support your hypothesis?
Jaliyah (winnetonka)
In this picture I only see men who are seniors casually drinking milk but they aren't eating anything, they're just drinking milk at a weird looking thing used as tables. By looking at their turbans I assume they're from the Middle East and they are probably refugees which is why there is a man who works in the military is watching over them. I know they aren't prisoners because they aren't in chains or handcuffs or anything like that.
Caitlin aose (New Jersey)
why don't you think they have food given to them and why do you think they are given just milk?
Keegan Jackson (Missouri)
it looks like a bunch of older arab men sitting in rows drinking milk. having the most wonderful time...meme
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Keegan Jackson, thanks for joining us this morning. I'm wondering what you see that makes you think they're enjoying their time?
Derek W. (WHS)
There are many men, who are wearing turbans, sitting at tables all drinking milk. There is a soldier, in the background. This picture makes me think that these man are trapped somewhere because of the wall seen behind the soldier. The season seems to be Autumn, Winter, or Spring, the bare trees and the could skies make me think this.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Derek W., thanks for posting today. The wall behind the men give you a feeling that these men are caught here against their will. Some of your peers have suggested a prison camp or refugee camp. Some believe the soldier is there for protection. Please look again. What other evidence can you find for your ideas?
Jett (WHS)
I think that with all the war and destruction going on in the middle east, these people are currently 'under watch' if you will. by the US government and due to some religious belief they have to drink milk. But due to this time of need this is the best they can get.
Gina (AOSE)
What kind of religious belief causes them to drink milk?
Caitlin aose (New Jersey)
Many say this is a refugee camp. Why do you think they're under watch than under protection? Why would those who are kept be mainly men and most of them older?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Caitlin aose, thanks for engaging in others' posts.
Brayden Mason (Winnetonka High School )
These men are at sitting at a group of metal tables and are obviously being supervised or kept there for some reason. These men are all drinking milk and the man closest to the camera is holding a Mala which is symbolic to Hinduism and Buddhism.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Braydon Mason, thanks for posting this morning. Based on the picture what do you see that suggests these men are being forcibly kept here?
Gina (AOSE)
Good observation about the Mala! I hadn't noticed it.
Yudita (Winnetonka )
In this picture I see what looks like a whole crowd of men drinking milk. I think maybe they are working on something and they got to have a break and they wanted milk to drink. I think the solider in the background is there to protect/keep the peace.
Alexis Hernandez (Kansas City)
Clearly, you can see a group of old men sitting at a table like structure, with glasses of milk. They are wearing turbans, and tight fitted clothing. This is probably a religious gathering. There is also a soldier standing to the right in the front. In the setting there isn't much going on, there is a few trees & what looks to be hay stacks, or some type of man made wall. I can infer that they are probably in fall, they are all dressed as if it is cold outside and there are no leaves on the trees.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Alexis Hernandez, thanks for posting today. You've referred to the "table like structure." That is indeed an object that many are noting with some perplexity. What more can you say about the object?
Winnetonka (nkcschools)
There are a group of elderly muslim people to what it looks like they're drinking milk. There is also a soldier standing on the right side watching them drink the milk. It looks like they're outside and sitting behind a metal table with the cups of milk on the glass plate. They have robes on to maybe represent their culture.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Winnetonka, thanks for posting today. Others have suggested the men are Hindu or Buddhist or Sikh. What do you see in the picture that makes you say Muslim?
lahquel (FMS)
these men are drinking milk from glasses and sitting outside sitting at a table and there seems to be someone from the military standing there watching them drink the milk and also the men appear to be muslim or arabian.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@lahquel, what specific things can you site that make you think these men are Muslin or Arabian?
Lauren I (aose)
I also thought that these men looked Arabian based off of the clothing that they are wearing. It looks like clothing that is worn in the Middle East. Are there any other reasons you think then men are Arabian?
Leonardo (fms)
The image includes a group of older men sitting down, drinking milk and they all have turbans on. The photograph looks like it was taken somewhere in the Middle East. In addition, there is a younger, white male standing beside them, possibly from the US army.
QuinnG (AOSE)
What leads you to believe that this was captured in the Middle East?
Ebrecke547339 (WHS)
There is a group of men sitting at small tables drinking milk. The majority of them are holding what look to be canes, they are sitting at old metal looking stands. The setting is obviously outside the sky is gray and there is a small wall to the left of the men as well as a solider seeming to supervise them. I think the engagement of this photo is the age of the men is similar and they are again all drinking milk, the look very distraught in a way.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ebrecke547339, would you speak a little more about, "looking stands." I'm nt sure exactly what you mean.
ryan (archdale)
these men are drinking milk from glasses and sitting outside sitting at a table and there seems to be someone from the military standing there
Brendan (North Carolina )
This image depicts a group of men sitting at wooden tables. They are mostly seniors and it seems to be taken outdoors under a gray sky. The tables are in bad condition and are worn down, perhaps of use or the elements. The men are wearing turbans and scarfs, leading me to believe they are from the middle east. They also are drinking milk from glasses. The man closest to the camera is wearing a watch and holding a mala. Mala is popular in hinduism and buddhim, used for prayer and chants. There is a soldier in the background, supposedly supervising the men. A short wall can be seen next to the soldier, next to barren trees.
QuinnG (AOSE)
Great job finding the Mala and connecting it to its meaning!
Katelyn AOSE (New Jersey)

This picture depicts multiple men wearing similar outfits. Each man is wearing a white turban, and a neutral colored clothing. In addition, they are all elderly men drinking glasses of milk. Maybe they are refugees from the Middle East. This is because their clothes resemble clothing worn by Islamic people in the Middle East. In the back, there is an American-looking soldier supervising the men. The men are sitting in a dry, open area. This photo must have been taken in winter because the trees in the background have no leaves on them.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Lauren I, you've done some careful looking. You're the first to comment on the season based on the lack of foliage. Thanks for joining us this morning. Please add your insight to other people who comment.
Erin W (AOSE)
What's going on in this picture? It looks like these older men are having some type of prayer or meditation, and drinking what appears to be milk. What do I see that makes me say that? I notice that the man on the left is holding what looks like a mala. Malas are used to count or keep track of saying a mantra or praising a deity. I know they are usually used in Buddhism and Hinduism using 108 but I believe Islam also has some form of mala. What else do I see? I notice that they are drinking milk? I am not sure of the significance of that. But it seems to be a part of there practice.
Rhea (WHRHS)
The photo looks as it takes place in the Middle East. The men look as if they are Muslim since they are wearing a head cap. The man on the left looks like he has prayer beads or a necklace in his hand.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Rhea, can you find evidence in the picture that makes you believe the setting is the Middle East?
Patrick (Whrhs)
This photo showsany Arab men having some milk. This is most likely in a refugee camp or military base in the middle East. There is a US army solider watching them
Katelyn AOSE (New Jersey)
How do you know it is a US soldier?
Andrew Caffrey (WHRHS)
Looks like some milk drinking sikhs being monitored by a soldier of some kind.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Andrew Caffrey, other students have suggested these men are Muslim or Arab. What do you see that tells you they are Sikhs?
S Howe (WHRHS)
It looks like people drinking milk.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@S Howe, please look again and tell us what more you can find.
Rachel B (WHRHS)

Lauren I (aose)
I also noticed the man from the army. He looks to be a different nationality than the rest of the men in the photo.
Lola (Whrhs - New Jersey)
The photo looks like some men drinking milk while being survieled by military. This is somewhere is the Middle East (probably). Maybe the military is trying to protect them?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Lola, you're wondering if the military presence is there for protection. What other options could there be?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Liz Nuzzi, what do you see about these individuals that suggests to you that they are refugees?
Christopher Meireles (Watchung Hills)
It appears to be in the Middle East. The man in the back is possibly someone from the United States. They seem to be drinking milk.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Christopher Meireles, your comments are all conditional, subjective. You are willing to think that your comments are not the only answers, but just possibilities. This is evidence of flexible thinking.
maddie b (nj)
There is a group of men in the middle east drinking milk. There is an American soldier in the background.
Sophia (WHRHS)
This picture looks to be taken in the Middle East. The presence of the U.S. soldier watching over the men may suggest that the men are prisoners or troublesome, however they do not appear to be restrained and are also being catered to with milk. This therefore appears to be a peaceful gathering.
Katelyn AOSE (New Jersey)
Interesting theory...
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Sophia, thanks for joining us this morning. You are able to question your own assumptions about what is going on in this picture. This leads to more careful looking and evidence gathering.
Anthony [email protected] (New Jersey)
It appears to be somewhere in the Middle East. Refugees most likely or maybe civilians trying to escape a war zone. The refugees or civilians are being fed and most likely also being given shelter by the US Army.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Anthony [email protected], what do you see about these individuals that suggests to you that they are refugees?
Liz Nuzzi (WHRHS)
This picture looks like a group of refugees in the Middle East who are drinking milk and maybe eating. The man in the back looks like an American soldier.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Liz Nuzzi, thanks for posting today. Wondering what you see that suggests these men are refugees, rather than prisoners or students or a religious group as offered by other students.
Caitlin aose (New Jersey)
I think this is some kind of refuge camp because the men are lined up drinking a white substance (probably milk). the man in the very forefront of the picture is holding a string of beads. This string is probably for praying. This seems to be an American refuge camp held by the army since the soldier in the background looks Caucasian.
Zach (WHRHS)
This looks like it could be some refugees enjoying a nice meal they may have not received in a while. They could also be in some sort of class as there are rows of people.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Zach, thanks for joining us today. What do you see that suggests a "nice meal" will be coming? Your suggestion of a "class" is a new idea this morning.
Mark E (Whrhs)
This picture could be from a refugee camp in the Middle East. It looks like people are just getting milk while the officer watches over them. Also the ground looks like sand so they could be in an area with little fresh water and that’s why they are drinking milk.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Mark E., thanks for posting today. You make a conjecture about this rather odd image of men drinking milk. It would be good to follow that up a bit with the idea of milk vs water. If there is little water for the men, how would that impact the animals that also need water to produce milk. Is there another option for where the milk came from?
Jamie L (Warren, WHRHS)
There seems to be a lot of forgeign men sitting against some rundown tables. Most of them are drinking milk, which is very odd. Maybe this picture was taken in a war zone, as there seems to be a soldier of some type in the background.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jamie L, thanks for posting this morning. I agree that it is very odd to see a group of men drinking milk together. Please look again. What more can you find that might explain this.
Vincent L. (WHRHS)
These old men appear to be having a good time with milk and cookies. A soldier, who can be American or Russian, looks on. I do not know the reason why but they could just be a small elderly group given their daily rations or a small school which is why there are small rows of desks.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Vincent L., thanks for posting this morning. I have a couple of questions. What do you see that makes you think the men are having a good time? I'm also wondering about the cookies? What evidence can you find in the picture for that comment?
