I love the NYT for uncovering these little gems and reporting on them thoroughly. Life is better when you’re exposed to the true diversity of the human experience

One of the many reasons why I *love* New York, even still.

Beautiful story but the conclusion is somewhat perplexing. The leader of the gospel group goes on and on about the special talent of this woman and the story concludes with the fact that she will not be participating during the Japanese tour. The lack of coherent explanation gave the story a flat tire just as it was pulling home.

I believe you misread the ending. The article does, indeed, say that TiA will participate in the tour... in addition to being baptized.

OMG. Cultural appropriation! How dare she! Social justice warriors, arise!

Just happened to move uptown next to a church. Nice story. As the Japanese say, "mizukusai." (suspicious)

I'm glad she's not being accused of "cultural appropriation". "....sincerest form of flattery."

I am not at all religious. In fact, I find religion, in the main, to be a decidedly divisive force. Just read today's headlines to see what I mean. But I also believe that the black church, specifically, is one of the few institutions that gets it right when it comes to being welcoming and inclusive. One is never turned away from being a part of the congregation. All are truly welcome. Other denominations would do well to emulate these (mostly) good people.

Thank you for sharing your judgments of a particular racial group. Any other judgments you are making?
Amirh (NYC)
It's an opinion about religious institutions.

"the black church specifically" The "black church" is not a religious institution, nor is "the white church."
