As devoted as I am to "What You Get," these three homes left me cold. Especially the home in Sharon, Conn. with is forced basement. We are being forced to pay far more than homes are worth and this collection proves it.

I liked the home in Sharon, but I'd have trouble with the weather there. Many years ago, I lived in CT, though not in that area, and I remember how cold the winters were and how humid it was in summer.

Oh, my. I'd snatch up that WV house in a heart beat. As it's near my old stomping grounds…Point of Rocks, Leesburg & Lucketts. Absolutely gorgeous. Dripping in all kinds colonial but stylish goodness.

Thank you NYT for showing these houses. The first one looks just like some 750k ones you show, maybe a bit smaller. Just think, take the extra 400k, spend some on making the house fancier, and use the rest for? college education? a Ferrari ? or just bank it!

Thanks for occasionally including houses that we "commoners" can afford. And thanks for including the taxes - it's interesting to compare different regions of the country.

These were all nice houses. A pity that the one in Minneapolis is apparently under the flight path, though. Put in all the high-end storm windows and other noise-reduction features you want, but they won't do any good when the weather's nice and you open the windows.

Unfortunately this is becoming more and more common. In Vermont, a "blue" state controlled by Democrats who you think should know better, the politicians (including Bernie Sanders!) have all strongly embraced the new F-35 fighter jet and its basing in Vermont's most densely populated area. Putting the homes of thousands and thousands of people in the new "not suitable for residential use" zone.

It would be more consistent to have picked a suburban Minnesota home as the WV and CT houses are. Minneapolis give you less for your money and higher taxes.

It's not so much the cost of these homes as the taxes that astound me. $1939? Seriously? May I suggest that "What You Get for..." forgo the house asking price and categorize the homes according to their taxes?

As a Californian, I can't fathom buying a house for only $375k. for that price, you're lucky to get a 1 bedroom/bath in coastal CA. I love the "What You Get" series because it provides a peek into how varied real estate is in this country. I wouldn't want to live in West Virginia (for myriad reasons) but it's fun to imagine having that kind of space and square footage for the price of a condo!

“I wouldn’t want to live in WV” And thus you understand why it’s so cheap.

Hooray! Interesting houses everyday people can afford in flyover country! Keep 'em coming, NYT real estate editor(s).
seeing with open eyes (north east)
sorry malahat, Connecticut is NOT a flyover state.

Depends where you're going.
