Trumps Throw Out Tradition for Their First State Dinner (24dc-eastwing) (24dc-eastwing)

Giving her so much credit for organizing a state dinner? Compare her to other women leaders, her IQ and what she has done for a nation is much to be desired.
George S (New York, NY)
For a dinner at which “the media was excluded” according to a lot of comments, there sure was a lot of live coverage by the media from the White House of the entire event. Oh, you mean they weren’t invited as dinner guests? Well who cares, their job is to cover the news, not dine and schmooze with the guests. Absurd complaint.
IWS (Dallas)
Why should the Trumps invite the press and Democrats? They’ve treated the First Family with nothing but hostility since day one—never once giving the benefit of the doubt.
Steve (longisland)
Kudos to Trump. Better not to invite the democrats. Democrats only agenda is sabotage of Trump and his agenda. Even better not to invite the fake news media. The media by and large are democrat lapdogs perpetuating fake news and scandals with breathless coverage of nothing. Where is the collusion? Hello? The press and the democrats deserve each other. Both are morally degenerate. Trump properly jettisoned both to the curb as he enjoys the world stage with other leaders.
Eleanor (Augusta, Maine)
How soon do the Trumpians leave the White House for good?
Margo (Atlanta)
Looking at these comments I am not surprised there would be only one Democrat. I am not sure I would trust people whose conversation could turn negative, impolite, insulting, etc in from of the head of another country. Once someone starts up like that around me they get few opportunities to repeat. Would you invite someone who could not be trusted to be civil?
Ariana V. (California)
I am impressed by Mrs. Trump's ability to put the whole party together on her own. It seems very different from previous dinners- which were more public and flashy. Her version is very formal and elegant. I'm very surprised by the contrast. It may be different than what the nation is used to. However, sometimes change can be a good thing.
GUANNA (New England)
They tossed decorum, and decency why not tradition.
jazz one (Wisconsin)
I'm watching my karma, so ... erased everything I first typed. As a nation, this is Us, in this moment. Melania is who, what and where she is. In this moment. I guess she's ... grown / matured. Only in America! maybe sums it up best.
Surfer (East End)
Mrs . Trump did most of the planning. Seriously? That is fake news. She said don’t worry! That must be code for I hired a party planner and a caterer to work with WH chef.
AMG (Los Angeles)
Trump excluded media - again! Trump calls it FAKE News. So when Trump threw the party for Sergei Lavrov & Sergei Kislyak in The Oval Office to celebrate what Russia had accomplished in the American election, why should there be any Americans or American Media present for such an odd celebration party. Evangelicals loved it when Putin allowed the Russian Media to release the photographs of The Oval Office celebration with the Russians. Evangelicals love Putin. Trump DID NOT claim the release of the photographs by Putin were LEAKS... NO LEAKS THERE... Trump DID NOT claim the photographs to be FAKE NEWS. . . NO FAKE NEWS BY RUSSIA. So Evangelicals wanted Trump to throw a Thank You party for the Russians and of course Trump wanted to throw a celebratory party with the very people who got him elected. And, for their part, Evangelicals were happy and proud of their Leader and Russia's role in the American election. They were simply joyful and rejoicing.
H (Greenwich CT)
Melania's pal Wolkoff made $26 mil organizing the inauguration. Wonder which of their buddies cashed in on this extravaganza?
Southern Boy (Rural Tennessee Rural America)
I just watched President Trump address Macron in French. And besides Ms. Trump speaks Slovenian, as does their son. None of the other first ladies spoke Slovenian, that makes her unique. I support the President. I support Trump. Thank you.
Kally (Kettering)
Are you sure you weren’t hearing the translator? He has trouble with English. And who cares if a First Lady speaks Slovenian?? How ridiculous!
Amala Lane (New York City)
can you give a reference please about trump speaking french to macron? on what station? just curious.
betty sher (Pittsboro, N.C.)
"Throw out tradition for their FIRST State Dinner"???? How about throwing out everything truly American (like our Constitution/Bill of Rights/Legally passed Laws by former Presidents (who were not demented)/degrading truly GREAT American citizens who guided out country in past Administrations/and the dim-wit thinks he is STILL in a campaign running against Hillary Clinton. GREAT SCOTT! When will this comedy END!!!
JV (Central Tx)
And further breaking with tradition , there'll be a bucket of KFC for The Donald....
John Adams (CA)
Will Ronny Jackson be there? He'll be easy to spot sitting at the table littered with empty whisky bottles.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
Bet they have another state affair on May 19, too.
susan (nyc)
It all sounds like a colossal bore to me.
AD (NY)
This event is ludicrous and disgusting in a Democracy that believes in that "all men are created equal." At taxpayers expense a corrupt billionaire puts on an over-the-top display of luxury at this so-called "state dinner.," while millions of children at home --and hundreds of millions around the world -- go hungry. Just one more cause of embarrassment for all Americans. But even worse, the New York Times covers this event as if it were a moment of such great consequence. Excuse me, I have to head to the vomitorium.
George S (New York, NY)
I’m sure you had the exact same complaint when the Obamas hosted such lavish events? Or is this just petty politics?
James A (Somerville NJ)
The very professional White House staff needs little real direction from any FLOTUS. Melania giving the orders was just PR.
Dan88 (Long Island NY)
Macron knows he is dealing with a dunce and a ham-fisted political hack. This gives him an opportunity to move further down the learning curve on managing the dunce and ham-fisted political hack to his and France's advantage.
Louise S. (Los Angeles)
Melania has class? let us not forget when a Jewish reporter who profiled Melania Trump was trolled by alt-right bigots. When Melania was confronted with that she said, "You know, I can't control my followers." That is not the statement of someone with "class."
KJS (Florida)
Melania planned a state dinner. What's she serving with the French fries - big macs and coke?
Kittredge White (Cambridge, MA)
@KJS ....only if donald has anything to say about it, lol...
KJ (Tennessee)
It's a dinner. Big deal. The Macrons would be gracious if they were served hotdogs on the White House patio.
That's what she said (USA)
Trump should have attended Barbara Bush Funeral. Melania was left free to mingle with Intelligent, Mature, Charming Past Presidents namely Obama. She comes back to Low Bar and must carry on.............
Richard (USA)
Only trump could spoil a birthday party or state dinner....He has no class and is a disgusting human being. I am surprised the Macron's even wanted to visit Washington...The luster of the presidency is gone...No class, dignity or public pride will be on display. The US is diminished and stained by trump!
sm (new york)
Macron and his entourage will get to experience Trump's lack of savoir-faire , along with all his invited cringing vulgarians . By golly I will get that military parade like Macron's to outdo him , wonder if gold leaf and gold decorations will abound on that table ?
P H (Seattle )
No democrats from Congress were invited? I stopped reading right there. Shame on the shameful Trumps. What children they ALL are.
NonoYeah (fla)
Trumps being soooo progressive! "There will be subtle hints at bipartisanship in the décor: Along with 1,200 Obama-inspired cherry blossom branches to decorate the Cross Hall, Mrs. Trump will use china from the Clinton White House."
KG (Denver, CO)
I heard the dinner menu this morning and thought "meh." Although, when president Dump orders from the kids menu, I'm guessing he'll go with the chicken fingers and he'll count the tub of ranch dipping sauce as his vegetable serving. But he'll have a diet coke, though. Because he has such a refined palate.
Ricky (Texas)
i would be willing to bet a visit to a local Chucky Cheese would have been a better atmosphere that what these folks are going to get at the White House.
Scrumper (Savannah)
Macron always holds his wife’s hand and Trump? Well he’ walks several paces ahead of his wife.
Paul Presnail (Saint Paul)
Cheeseburgers, jumbo fries, chocolate shakes and their just desserts for everyone...except Democrats.
Tom J (Berwyn, IL)
Are those gold plates what Trump eats his cheeseburgers on every day?
smb (Savannah )
Very ugly to exclude Democrats. Trump really thinks he is only president over his own voters, not the country. He is supposed to represent the United States where in fact there are more Democrats than Republicans. Ugly American thug basically.
Susan (Toronto, Canada)
Its clear that well known entertainers, celebrities, intellectuals and artists, whom the Obamas invited to state dinners would refuse or have refused to attend. Same problem as the inauguration. The Obamas used state dinners to showcase the talent and brilliance of Americans who won't accept any invitation from Trump. I say good on you! Let them have their downsized state dinner with opera supplied by the Lincoln Centre.
George S (New York, NY)
If that “talent and brilliance” prefers pettiness and partisanship over helping to represent their country that’s their choice..but don’t complain about it.
treabeton (new hartford, ny)
Trump said he was happy to be eating crow at the state dinner.
Sharon5101 (Rockaway Park)
Now that Melania Trump is doing what First Ladies have traditionally done-- entertain foreign dignitaries during a state dinner--will she appear on a magazine cover soon? The way the mainstream media has deliberately ignored Melania Trump is a total disgrace. This is the first time in recent memory that a First Lady has been treated in such a shabby manner.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
You've got to be joking. Mrs. Trump had plenty of magazine coverage before she became FLOTUS
cbd212 (Massachusetts)
Where have you been for the last 8 years?
Betsy Bree (Rhode Island)
I don't know why I am even reading this article, actually I stopped reading it about two paragraphs in. I truly do not care what the Trumps do, unlike the days when genuine presidents were running the country.
N. P. Sanders (Dallas Texas)
Mrs. Trump is an exercise in duality. She shuns her husband (and rightfully so) AND she enjoys the trappings of Trump life. The thing is she knows he's nefarious. So this isn't just your average mild disdain for, or detachment from, a spouse. She knows he's a crook, a liar, and a cheat. So she is complicit too. So more "duality" of sorts...she is an "accessory" of two kinds...a beautiful accessory that he needs to make himself look good and she enjoys performing the role to some extent...and the other kind of accessory. An accessory to crimes. There is no way, she has lived with him and not known of his criminal actions. She knows, she conceals, and she benefits.
Chanzo (UK)
“the designer of Melania Trump’s gown will be released on Tuesday” Time off for good behavior, perhaps? Perhaps this person will be “announced” or “unveiled” on Tuesday? “Typically the leadership of the opposing party is invited to a state dinner, but the Trumps threw out that tradition as they also shunned journalists” I would expect nothing less from the Trumps: degrade every tradition they can. A Republicans-only state dinner for the President of France might not be as bad as segregated lunch counters, but it's not great, either. The Democratic Louisiana governor is what -- tokenism? A rounding error?
Blasthoff (South Bend, IN)
"State" dinner? No press, no Democrats sounds more like another secret parlay Trump affair on the taxpayers' dime. Are there any Americans that don't have non-disclosure clauses attending? Will we get details from French news or will it again be Russian news who seem to be allowed more coverage than American journalists? Wait, which White House is having a dinner?
George S (New York, NY)
Wait...the press wasn’t there? This was all secret? Then who was airing all the pictures and video on TV? My my....
Gwendolyn Hammond (California)
What a jerk... we are no longer the “United” States. We are currently the Trump divided states. Lead by a small, angry, ignorant, old man who yells at his TV. Sad, is an understatement.
Boregard (NYC)
Throwing a party...ins that the cliched female thing to do? BTW; what are Melania's causes? I heard a while back that online bullying was one...but with her hubby, the POTUS being the biggest online bully...it sounded really odd... God, I miss Michelle...her smile alone was enough to light up a room...
DMS (San Diego)
That cream and gold "color" scheme is the default for this insecure and colorless white house.
Peggy C (Vero Beach, Fl)
I understand Melania has worked hard to pull off this State dinner but we all know somehow her husband will take credit for it. I believe he’ll praise her but then say if it wasn’t for him she wouldn’t have the knowledge and good taste to be able to do the job. It always goes back to him.
BobbNT (Philadelphia, PA)
I love hats. But, this was the wrong time and place for Melainia to wear this huge white hat ... for whatever reason she may have had. The result was she "trumped" the French President and the First Femme of France, and took away what should have been a more gracious posture for a First Lady welcoming the French head of state and his wife . If her message is some subliminal one to her "husband" she should keep that private. If her desire is to relive her former career as a runway model , she should divorce him and go her own way. The hat made me think of Julia Roberts wearing a big but appropriate hat when attending a Polo match in Pretty Woman.
Gigi Gonzalez (Texas)
State dinners are supposed to include both parties. This is ridiculous. Acts like a dictator. Melania Trump is lovely. No more to add to that.
Troutwhisperer (Spokane, Wa.)
Did you notice after Macron gave our leader the French buss on each cheek, that Trump said: "You're special."
Alan D (New York)
After Trump is impeached (or quits) I think that we should keep Melania on as First Lady. (Really, who would want to hang around ex-president Trump?) Karen Pence can keep busy advising Mike and going on trips with him.
ReggieM (Florida)
I haven’t wrapped my head around the reality of United States First Lady Melania Trump, third wife of Donald Trump who bumped second wife, Marla, who bumped first wife, Ivana. Melania, a Slovenian model and lucky recipient of a rarely issued Einstein visa (for who knows what high-demand modeling skill), said during a televised White House tour when encountered sitting with her staff that she was just “Vorkin.” But, then again, I haven’t wrapped my head around her ludicrous husband, installed by the Electoral College to occupy the Oval Office and bring down the government. None of this makes sense; so, I’m not surprised they’ll host a state dinner that snubs representatives for more than half the country’s population. It’s par.
Rosamaria (Virginia)
Can you wrap your head around Mrs Macron being 25 years older and starting their romance when she was a married teacher?
Mik (Stockholm)
Why blame a woman for her partner's crimes.Let her be.
Apple Jack (Oregon Cascades)
The French have said that the greatest culinary achievement of the Americans was ketchup. Well. President Trump should have gone with his gut.
Len (Pennsylvania)
Thank the lord Trump didn’t serve Big Macs.

(discard earlier version - your comment box ate one of the lines) A succession of firsts: > Throwing the first non-traditional state dinner > Throwing the first presidential election > Throwing out the fbi (first ball, in) Washington National's season (actually not - honor went instead to someone who stopped a shooter) > Throwing out the first FBI director in Washington's national history... (actually not – honor went instead to someone who started his own impeachment) > “…Like to throw out a couple of ideas I had, first day on the job... > ”…Like to throw out a couple of ideas Obama had, first day on the job… For the above, want to acknowledge a funny conversation never got the chance to have with Al Franken...

Is this the way to "make America great again"?
mkm (nyc)
FDR served the king and queen of England hot dogs. 120 instead of stuffing an extra 200 donors into the East Room is classy.
Stop and Think (Buffalo, NY)
Fake news, according to Donald & Melania: romaine lettuce contaminated with e. coli, and eggs contaminated with salmonella. The State Dinner salad course, Caesar with freshly prepared Caesar dressing, may taste great at first, but later, Emmanuel Macron, his wife, and the French delegation will be upset, gastro-intestinally and neurologically, that they ever set foot in the White House. The Democrats should be happy that they weren't invited.
George S (New York, NY)
Nice petty way to insult all of the professional, hard working, non-partisan White House staff who dedicate their careers to serving whoever the First Family regardless of their party. What an embarrassing post.
BK (Boston)
This is not going to go the way you think. - Luke Skywalker
Jim (Houghton)
Glad to know someone in Trumpworld has a clue about what they're doing.
PAG (New Brunswick, NJ)
Seems to me there is at least one person in the White house that knows what they're doing.
Vernon (Brisol City)
Wow! once is mighty impressed at the (?)simplicity of Melania, who can speak 5 languages, in planning the state dinner for the Macrons. Democrats are out of bounds, lest they might ask probing and penetrating questions, especially about the Iran deal. And the fake press is barred and banned too. Kudos, Melania, for your brevity, and levity. Melania's DNA has mutated to suit Trump's whims, fancies, and caprice, at least for now. Melania's stoic, and deadpan facade, obviously, will not betray what she is harboring in her mind, about the opposition, but her unfazed gait with a stiletto-high heel shoes make a lot of fashion statements. Trump's unhealthy eating habits might have prompted her to order a set of more salubrious salad-like menus. Or so it seems. Do these acts contribute to a more propitious FLOTUS? The best epithet can be, in some observers' opinions, perchance, ''dubious''.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
He put "finger quotation marks" around "unite." Just ask Kelly-Anne. And no one can teach Trump anything, not Macron, not May, not Merkel . . . and that's just the M's.
Momo (Berkeley)
I would expect that the Trumps, including Melania Trump, would be at home with the likes of the Abes who are also surrounded by scandalous financial dealings, etc. Birds of a feather flock together.
RST (NYC)
Donald Trump's mere presence at a state dinner would be cringe worthy.
Rocky star (Miami, FL)
I love it how someone that entered the country illegally is planning state dinners.
M Lutz (Denver)
No Democrats from Congress are invited to the state dinner. That is ridiculous.
jim Johnson (new york new york)
It wouldn't matter what she did in planning the state dinner. Trump's boorish vulgarity will make it seem like a visit to Mickey Dees.
J L S (Alexandria VA)
Interesting that no Federalists were invited to William Henry Harrison’s Whig Party State Dinner for French Prime Minister Jean-de-Dieu Soult in honor of French King Louis Philippe I.
BB (MA)
They are using Clinton's china, they are using Obama's cherry blossom idea, the aides and staff feel that Mrs. Trump has this under control. What tradition are you talking about, inviting more pols? It seems to be the NYT that is upset about this dinner, maybe because they were not invited.
GUANNA (New England)
It was a state visit to the US. It is incomprehensible the Trump omitted 1/2 the federal government and the representatives of 1/2 the people. By the way the richer half of the population. Sorry, Macon his little sidekick should have reminded the Donald that Donald J. Trump is not the State.
Tina McKenna (Milton, NY)
Representing BOTH parties. Representing ME.
Tina (seattle)
So when we have a female first lady, is the first gentleman going to pick the flowers and tell the help not to worry? This antiquated showcase of gender normative roles is why #metoo and a bulletproof glass ceiling exist. It is also why it would be so mind-blowing to America to have a female president that, instead, we elected Trump.
Jane (US)
I don't really care about the details of the pageantry here. All that really matters is the bloated, awful con artist at the center of this dinner, who is supposedly leading and representing America at this dinner. I can't imagine being able to eat anything in his presence.
West Texas Mama (Texas)
Melania Trump is no Barbara Bush but she certainly shows more dignity and demonstrates more respect for and awareness of what is due to the position she holds than her husband appears to for his.
Gerry (St. Petersburg Florida)
You could say that about anybody.
Zippy T Pinhead (California)
The difficult part, according to the article, is constantly attempting to intervene to keep Trump's mouth shut so that he doesn't say anything inappropriate, like leering at Macron's wife again and making comments about her body. No wonder the press isn't invited. It's a disaster, or at the very least, an embarrassment waiting to happen, just like all of Trump's other state dinners.
Elizabeth Marchak (Coastal Maine)
It's no surprise that Trump invited Republicans (and apparently one Democrat and no one from the press) to this dinner. He has to be the center of attention and he knows the party faithful will only bow at his narcissistic feet. He also thinks he is settling scores with Dems and the press by excluding them, but he's really providing just another craven example of his administration's gratuitously ugly and nasty behavior that is utterly lacking in basic human decency.
Steve (Sunny Florida)
I wonder how many citizens of color are on the guest list.
LaughingBuddah (USA)
It will be real nice to see them seated around the cement pond...maybe Ellie Mae can bring in a few critters
BMUSNSOIL (TN)
On one of the morning shows they gave a glimpse of the table settings. If you like gold spray painted faux bamboo chairs, gold plated china, gold plated “silverware,” with gold plated drinkware you’ll love it. The flower arrangements are lovely.
George S (New York, NY)
You do realize that much of that is historic White House decoration and service items, usd as well by prior administrations, or are facts irrelevant?
Gerry (St. Petersburg Florida)
The recent death of Barbara Bush has brought into focus just how far we have come. We have had a number of great women as first ladies, Barbara Bush being one of the true greats. And now we have....Melania. Sad.
Sue McIntosh (northern va)
True.. but in fairness Melania never sought the job.
News Matters (usa)
Maybe there should be an alt-state-dinner at which various people of various colors, democrats, libertarians, and republicans -- a representative sample of the country -- could meet the French leader so he doesn't have to hold his nose the entire time he's here?
Marci Dosovitz (Linwood, NJ)
Why are people giving kudos to Melania Trump for planning a state dinner? She has a staff of 10 people who have all been through this before and know the ins and outs of such planning....all Melania has to do is say "yes, that's good", or "no, that isn't". This FLOTUS is devoid of ideas and initiatives. Indeed, even her speeches are copied from Michelle Obama. People defend her as staying under the radar, but since when is that a laudable trait in a role that requires leadership?? Melania made her choice long ago, and planning a dinner party does not lend her either respectability or accomplishment.
Carole Smith (Atlanta, Ga)
Give the woman a break! Can she do anything right for you people? I think she's lovely, regal, well spoken (even with an accent) and classy. People have to throw shade at POTUS & FLOTUS all the time!
The Buddy (Astoria, NY)
Obama couldn't engage in even the most perfunctory attempts to outflank the opposition party, without being accused of arrogance. But not inviting Democrats to the dinner? A clear attempt to shut out the Democrat party from participating in diplomacy, to deny them an opportunity for building foreign policy credentials. And we wonder why elected officials can never get past their tribal blood feuds.
Scrumper (Savannah)
The Queen's State Dinners always includes a selection of historical artifacts that tie the two countries together and flatter the guests. The Queen will show and discuss their significance. The table settings will reflect their flag colours. What's Trump going to do? have all the women servers in French maid outfits?
Rosamaria (Virginia)
Mrs. Trump is an exquisite, elegant, and charming First Lady. She will do an incredible job.
steve (Hudson Valley)
based on what evidence?
SoCalRN (Simi Valley, CA)
I guess Americans don’t know that Macron is visiting right now, when there is currently, as we speak, massive upheaval in France, causing millions of people to suffer due to their nationwide train strike, scheduled for 3 months, at least. Their government owns the railways. He has rejected addressing this constructively. Riots in their streets. He refuses to talk. Also, Air France is striking, causing more havoc. Though, that is not a government held business. Macron is enjoying a small respite from seriousness, by play-acting with Trump. He will need to get involved at home, and soon. Though he sees first-hand how to ignore leadership responsibility, by “hanging” with Trump this week, instead of LEADING his people.
Kim Murphy (Upper Arlington, Ohio)
My car has more class than Melania and Donald Trump, so why would they honor tradition with a State dinner? Perhaps they'll serve cheeseburgers.
william (oakland ca)
I agree it is petty not to invite Congressional Democrats. Just like it is petty for Congressional Democrats to engage in what is, essentially, a boycott of the Trump presidency -- e.g., virtually unanimous opposition to the nominee for Sec of State who previously was confirmed to a high official position. "Trump goes low, we go lower."
News Matters (usa)

1. Democrats were well schooled by observing Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and Paul Ryan obstruct President Obama for Two Terms. Republicans are now reaping what they have sown. 2. Spys don't make trustworthy diplomats.

The NYTimes used the word "tradition" and needs to correct that useage. When a federal official entertains a governmental official at a State Dinner it is anti-democratic and Un-American and an abuse of power to turn it into a personal political vendetta, as Trump has done. He is the President of the United States, when a President has an official state dinner entertaining a foreign official he cannot, may not and should be sanctioned formally by our Congress for not including people who are not Republicans. This is our nation, not his. Donald Trump acts as if he owns this country, he is a steward, he has a job not control of power. There is tradition then there is our nation and for the NYTimes to use the word 'tradition' as if this he were selecting Christmas tree ornaments is a disservice to readers. What Trump did in this situation must be punished. We are Americans not subjects. Donald Trump is President, not king.
Peter Lehrman (NYC)
State Dinner Menu: Well-done steak, ketchup, 'french' fries, chocolate cake. What's to worry?
Carter Nicholas (Charlottesville)
I hope it's not too late to save the menu. Well done roast lamb slathered in jambalaya paired with young domestic Pinot Noir carries, as a friend of mine remarked, a very telling gangster's message: "See what we did to your cuisine? Just imagine what we could do to your country." Others, perhaps more plausibly, will just interpret it as yet another object lesson in provocative nativist fury against cultivation of any kind.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
Or maybe it is simply characteristic of someone for whom there can never be "enough." Trump wouldn’t understand a concept like "less is more."
James C (Virginia)
With only a token Democrat invited this is not a state dinner but a taxpayer paid Republican Party look at me event. Should be paid for by the RNC instead of us taxpayers. What a distorted leadership nearly the majority of Americans voted into office.
KathyinCT (Fairfield County CT)
This is classic!! The sole example of bipartisanship is using CLINTON CHINA? I guess they could say the guess will enter through a door that Obama used. And for the free democratic transparency of our mutual countries, Trump bans all press coverage. Hiding what?
Kally (Kettering)
What I see here is another example of what a pariah Trump has become. He did such a fabulous job on his earlier European trips, making the Pope grimace and shoving a fellow leader out of the way. He doesn’t do the Correspondents’ Dinner because he couldn’t be graceful or humorous enough and he’s afraid of them. He comes up with an excuse not to go to the Summit of the Americas because he knows how much he’s disliked. The staff is afraid to go full out State dinner with him because he is not cut out for that kind of hosting. He’s like some cranky old guy that only wants to go to the same restaurant over and over. But I can tell from commenters that many people again want to normalize abnormal behavior. A president should be able to handle ALL their duties and these events should definitely have bi-partisan participation. But back on the subject at hand, I’m sure the dinner will be quite lovely because despite her taste in men, Melania seems to have pretty good taste otherwise. Like that’s the greatest attribute in the world... And at least she keeps her mouth shut. What if she tweeted like him? Aaargh. I’m sure she doesn’t mind the smaller number of attendees—it will be all the more manageable.
drollere (sebastopol)
More than a year into the presidency, and this is the *first* state dinner? That speaks for itself about this administration's foreign policies.
Fran (San Francisco)
Lower-caliber candidates for Cabinet positions who seemingly lack the necessary ethics and experience are about all we can expect from a president who is clearly out of his depth here. The only real vetting going on: (1) Jackson charmed Trump during his exam, (2) he looks the part, and (3) Jackson probably had Trump by the time he said “I agree, Mr. President, we must privatize the VA.” We are at the point now where qualified candidates need not apply for any positions in Trump World. Trump and Republicans really only want flunkies who will advance their agenda. And: a bonus if they are actually qualified, too!
mnc (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.)
Very classy in her choice of fashion but today did it for me. Wearing the white hat that everyone is talking about was a very embarrassing thing to do to the visiting first lady of France. Your guest always takes precedence over you and you never ever overshadow them as I think was done today. Just my opinion.
Frank Haydn Esq (Washington DC)
I just visited Melania's Twitter account, reviewed all the lovely and tasteful photos and videos... and just had an epiphany: when historians write about the Trump presidency, FLOTUS will be the one redeeming feature.
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
You can stop at "Trumps throw out..." The burning question is this: Will anything be left standing when it's all over? Any norms of decency, kindness, goodness, legality? And with nukes in the hands of two madmen, I do mean ANYTHING.
Restore Human Sanity (Manhattan)
Would be sympathizers of Malania please note, she is a tone deaf 5th avenue kept lunch lady used to getting everything her way, the fact she seems to despise her husband notwithstanding. She, like the culture she signed on for with trump, couldn't care less about average Americans, DC political culture, WH protocol, bullying, etc. Its all about her and her tight little privileged world. She has shown she couldn't care less about the bigger picture since she moved in.

as a moderate leftist, we are upset because he's got a very short list of democrats? and we expected what? inviting any of our dem representitives is like inviting the fox into the hen house. anyone of them is liable to go off on a tirade. Doesn't matter what he does, because whatever it is, we will criticize it. we are now like the boy who cried wolf. we criticize EVERYTHING he does and EVERY word he speaks. and those even moderately on the right are tired of hearing us whine like a petulant child about EVERYTHING and are tuning us out. we need to get a grip people.

It is a state visit not a private function. You don't snub 1/2 on congress. Even Obama invited the deplorables in the Tea Party.
Richard B (Sussex, NJ)
Thank you for telling it like it is. People are getting tired of the whining and want real proposals. Think of it - would you vote for anyone - Republican or Democrat - whose only attribute is their ability to compete as a complainer in chief.
Matthew Iadarola (Los Angeles, California)
One party rule is a dictatorship. Any Republican who attends this event is signaling that dictatorship is acceptable. Macron also validates this messaging by attending.
Ellen (WA)
I wouldn't normally care about details of a state dinner and think it's a ridiculous and outdated expectation for first ladies to have to prove their entertaining prowess... but still I can't help thinking it would have been the perfect time to also include something to honor the late Barbara Bush. Surely someone thought of it (Clinton's china etc). Was it to do with her outspoken disdain for Trump?
Miami Joe (Miami)
Fantastic job. A perfect First Lady. I hope people are taking notes. Less is more when it comes to First Ladies. Thank you, Melania
Girish Kotwal (Louisville, KY)
Trump will not will not judge by tradition but an anti-establishment president, he will be judged by the performance of the country during his presidency. The first state dinner will be judged by the spin of those who get the first word out.
Dwight.in.DC (Washington DC)
I am sure Mrs. Trump will preside over a fabulous state dinner for the President of France and his wife. However, the exclusion of Democrats from the event is inexcusable, petty, and counter productive -- everything her husband represents.
GUANNA (New England)
Well our idiot Trump believes he is the state not the head of a state.
samuelclemons (New York)
Many Americans have difficulty with class as a concept. We think we're the casteless society and then we find out when its too late that one can know the price of everything and the value of nothing. That net worth may be distinct from class is a concept that many cannot fathom. That said I like ketchup with/not on my medium rare steak & on my quarter pounder(which is well done). I additionally loathe Starbucks with its ritualistic rules & its black coffee beans; I find the baristas extremely pretentious. So what if they' serving slim jims as a main course its one's character that counts.
Bernie (Nebraska)
I think is imperative to mention Stormy Daniels and what she is. It is an important part of the story. And she has not been mentioned anywhere else in the paper today.
Rosamaria (Virginia)
What a petty idea! It sounds like a high school cafeteria.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Trump's rejection of Democrats and journalists will make the Republican base swoon with happiness, which is why Trump did this. This country is divided even more than during the early 1970's, probably not since the Civil War has it been so divided and hostile to political adversaries. When Trump is not re-elected in 2020, the Republicans are going to be talking about secession and creating a state made up of like minded people. I don't know what it will take to restore that group's trust in the good faith of citizens who are not avid supporters of Trump, probably not possible.
Gene S. (Hollis, N.H.)
Inviting Republicans from Congress and not Democrats is a major Gaffe. At the very least, Schumer and Pelosi should have been included.
IWS (Dallas)
Why? Democrats continue to do everything in their power to stonewall and undermine President Trump and the agenda that he was elected to fulfill. I don’t think a day has gone by without impeachment being mentioned—the Democrats have made it their mission to attempt to de-legitimize President Trump’s victory in 2016. The fact that we’re having trouble confirming the President’s Cabinet positions is just one of many instances revealing the incredible amount of disrespect and vitriol that the left has for this President. No, they should not be invited. A waste of taxpayer money.
Richard B (Sussex, NJ)
As much as I dislike both of them, I agree they should have been on the guest list.
Inter nos (Naples Fl)
I thought that wearing that towering white hat was very insensitive towards the petite and short mrs. Brigitte Macron .
John Techwriter (Oakland, CA)
Considering what she has to put up with every day, and that minute scrutiny of her character has found her to be rather a nice person, we should only wish Melania well as she organizes a dinner party for the man whose country invented the dinner party. It’s a pity they had to resort to opera to entertain their young guests. The event would have been an ideal venue for a diverse selection of American up-and-coming performers. Macron and his wife would probably have loved it. But playing for Trump would be career suicide for any American pop artist, emerging or veteran. One side benefit of the event might be a greater appreciation by Americans for how the French helped this country when it had no friends, right at the beginning. The French even modeled their republic after ours. It’s long past time to set aside Americans’ silly prejudice against the French because they are cultured and eat quiche. We can only hope that Macron can continue the tradition of French assistance to America by getting through to Trump about his world-disrupting policies, but given Trump's neurotic self-isolation, that would be too much to hope for.
Frank (Princeton)
Since it is known that Trump doesn’t like to pay his bills and given the fact that the cherry trees are currently in bloom, I have to wonder if they just sent staff out in the surrounding streets to cut the blossoms right off the cherry trees that belong to the public. Just saying.
BillFNYC (New York)
I'm sure that Mrs. Trump can manage to throw a dinner for 120 people with a planning staff of 14 plus the full staff of the White House and the federal budget at her disposal. It's comforting to know that she has the wits to select from the variety of options for flowers, china, etc., presented to her.
GUANNA (New England)
Michelle's first dinner had over 300. She managed it and had four courses.
SBC (Fredericksburg)
Is it really necessary to throw in a sleazy description about the Stormy episode? It has nothing to do with the State dinner and taints an otherwise complimentary article about the First Lady. As if she hasn't heard about it enough. I'm sure the dinner will be a tasteful, elegant event, in whatever areas she has influence over.
susan (illinois)
I don't have any particular feelings about Melania, but I gotta say, that hat! Does she think she's British royalty? Also, way to hog attention, which is not graceful when one is hosting.
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
Not inviting Congressional Democrats makes him look weak. It feeds the story that he doesn't like to be in front of a crowd he doesn't own or he can't control.
GUANNA (New England)
Worse it cheapens all Americans. It was not a private affair, it was a state dinner. Democrats are part of this functional State. Face it Trump sees himself as the state not the head of a state. He is a really petty trite man who constantly degrades us and Americans.
T SB (Ohio)
Love the idea of dinner at Mount Vernon.
Pillai (St.Louis, MO)
"There is at least one Democrat on the list, according to a White House official: John Bel Edwards, the governor of Louisiana." I think that is a mistake - probably because Trump said "Let's get all the Southern governors - we know they are hard Republicans. Right?" I expect the invitation for Edwards to be shredded.
Quandry (LI,NY)
Again, Trump disrespects the opposition by not inviting Dems to the State Dinner. Trump deserves whatever will be his downfall. He is a despicable human being, with no sympathy or decency for anyone other than himself!
MDB (Indiana)
@Quandary — Just a petulant, petty immature boy-man who sees himself as king. Protocol and decorum mean nothing. One more way to “get back” at his “enemies.” He’s only making himself look foolish, and I’m sure that’s not lost on Macron. Dear Don: Please. Grow. Up.
azloon (arizona)
Who'd want to accept?
Robert Blankenship (AZ)
He doesn't deserve respect. He's a crook and an embarrassment to the country. The sooner he is gone the better.
Never part of the core. (Millbury, Ma)
I can only hope that Melania will lead the show. It appears that she has taste, and class, something that Donald lacks in toto. And please, please Donald, let everyone else do the talking as a considerate host should. Every time you spout off, it just makes you look like a fool.
Euphemia Thompson (Westchester County, NY)
I beg to differ. If she either taste or class, she'd never have taken up with him to start with.
Euphemia Thompson (Westchester County, NY)
correction: if she HAD either taste or class. apologies. I was typing to fast.
Paul Wortman (East Setauket, NY)
All I keep saying to myself whenever I read or hear about or see Melania Trump, is: Why would anyone so blatantly and hurtfully cheat on her? In any case, I hope she succeeds with the dinner, even though her philandering, cad of a husband is once again demonstrating how unstatesman-like and ungracious he is by snubbing both the Democrats and the media. His boorish behavior stands in stark contrast to hers as well as to the French whose national motto is: Liberte, Egalite, et Fraternite.
Shari (Chicago)
She knew who he was when she married him. She made an informed decision to be his third wife. And, remember that she was happy to support this birther views. She is not a victim in this situation.
bored critic (usa)
ummmm, bill and hillary, jack and jackie, the list is long. don't make it like he's the only one in history.
amy feinberg (nyc)
Maybe the extramarital stuff was part of their agreement. Maybe she prefers it that way. Not a good idea to tack your morals onto someone else.
Robyn (NYC)
I'm sure the Macrons will be privately trashing the state dinner menu later in the evening when they're alone. It sounds really boring. And when they see Trump drinking a coke.... LOL
George S (New York, NY)
I fail to see what is wrong with the menu, especially in comparison to other prior state dinners. And the French happen to love lamb.
Dorothy (Princeton, NJ)
How much did it cost us to pay for Trump's gathering outside the White House this morning? Were there portapots for the schoolchildren and guests to use? And what was Melania wearing on her head?
dbb (usa)
What was Ivanka wearing for her so called “job” showing up at the meeting today. Dress hanging off half her body. Sorry, this is not how American women dress for work, it is not a half dressed runway show, she is a total embarrassment to herself and this country.
N. Smith (New York City)
Must say, all these 'poor Melania' comments tend to make me wonder if Michelle Obama, as the first African-American woman in the White House, would've received such a gracious pass...probably not.
Jane K (Northern California)
She didn't need one.
Hortencia (Charlottesville)
Sooooo true! Makes me furious.
White Buffalo (SE PA)
Nor did she.
W.Wolfe (Oregon)
What a huge, ridiculous sham - AND - at Taxpayer expense. After all of Trump's vulgarities and infidelities, for him to sit at the head of the table is an ugly joke. "Don't worry" about the color of the centerpiece flowers, Melania. I'd be more concerned about getting to your Doctor for a V.D. check, and then getting to your Lawyer for a settlement, and a big ticket out of there.
Margo Channing (NYC)
Gee...>W, did you complain about the many state dinners that were served "at taxpayers expense" for previous administrations? Thought so.
samuelclemons (New York)
more of interest is the goings on under the table.
Name (Here)
Just because the French have the world's best cuisine and the sharpest social savvy (that certain je ne sais quoi) is no reason to agonize over entertaining them. Heck, beers and burgers, freedumb fries, big pieces of choklit cake, and then they can go bowling.
original flower child (Kensington, Md.)
Don't give Trump any ideas.
tom harrison (seattle)
Sounds like heaven to me.
Thomas Lashby (Atlanta)
Of course no Democrats. They are in lock step to lose again. Who wants losers to attend. Obama screwed things up bad enough. Keep all Liberals away from any Head of State. What a useless bunch who put America not first. They are about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in 2018. Too funny
Glenn G (New Windsor)
The funny thing about Democrats (Liberals) that many on the right seem to always want to forget. We are citizens too. Don't be too sure about 2018, Dems generally don't show up for the mid terms, unless motivated to and boy are we motivated
DR (New England)
Right, look at all those red state utopias in the U.S., merrily sucking down aid provided by tax payers in blue states. Too funny.
GUANNA (New England)
You need anger management and a dose of reality. It was a State Function not a private Function. 1/2 the government is Democratic. Your silly Trump imagines himself the State not head of State.
Charles (Clifton, NJ)
"In the end, the list was so small that after the must-invite American government officials and the large French delegation, there was room for the president to personally invite only four people, according to a White House official." Not inviting Democrats? I thought that Trump said that he would unify this nation. Trump has said a lot of things. It's led to his enormous lack of credibility. The small list is indicative of a small mind. That Trump works only bilaterally is indicative of a small mind. But, one by one, Trump will learn the nations of the world to find those leaders with whom Trump feels comfortable, his being a creature of psychology and not of intellect. Today it's France. Macron can teach him a thing or two. Cheers.
Mortiser (MA)
Surprised that this is their first State Dinner. I would have thought they'd feature some pomp earlier on, cause there sure has been a whole lot of circumstance.
GUANNA (New England)
Two years in and this was all they could manage. Incompetence at every level of the Trump Administration. A president usually has 3-6 in each term.
Kathy McAdam Hahn (West Orange, New Jersey)
The fawning over the First Lady's planning of this dinner is a touch nauseating. Is this now the bar we are setting for the FLOTUS role? Sad...for us.
Jane K (Northern California)
I loved watching the Obama's host many musical presentations at the White House. The musicians that played were incredible and it was wonderful to see the concerts on PBS as an example of how Michelle Obama made the White House, the People's House. It is too bad that Trump does not appreciate the arts or what the White House symbolizes to America. He only seems to entertain in Florida.
George S (New York, NY)
Really? After hearing the fawning over Mrs. Obama, her supposedly buff arms, and all the rest? Bottom line is people are being unkind to Mrs. Trump solely because of pettty politics.
Truth-Be-Told (NYC)
Nothing Trump (not-my-president) does impresses me. How Melania continues to be married to him is a complete mystery to me.
Hortencia (Charlottesville)
M-O-N-E-Y.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
A lot of people seem to believe that Mrs. Trump deserves better than Mr. Trump. I'm still awaiting evidence for that.
bill d (phoenix)
grifters of a feather.....
N. Smith (New York City)
Considering the only tradition the Trumps know is greed and graft, it's hardly surprising that they throw it out.
GT (NYC)
Typical self righteous comments -- it's what got Trump elected in the first place. Give the first lady a little wiggle room .. think she has handled herself with class and I'm sure this will be no different. They know something about setting up parties ... also, the president does not drink .. and never has because of his brother. State dinners have become bloated events ... we should have more of them and they should be smaller. Obama had Tents for all the extra people ? Keep it inside -- that's big enough. The idea of a dinner at Mt. Vernon was brilliant.
Sara (Brooklyn)
“Handled herself with class” while remaining married to and not speaking out against a cheating misogynistic xenophobic (the accolades are endless) bigot? Seriously?
N. Smith (New York City)
Tell me. Is it ever posssible to make a comment about Donald Trump without bringing up Obama? Give it a rest. Amother thing -- it was the Electoral College that got Trump elected, not the majority of votes.
MDB (Indiana)
@Sara— The Trumps have one of the more complicated relationships I’ve seen. They make Bill and Hillary Clinton look like Ozzie and Harriet. We obviously don’t know every dynamic of their marriage, but I’m guessing at the *very* least theirs is one of mutual advantage/use only. As long as the other keeps getting what they want, a lot will most likely be tolerated — especially from her. I don’t see her as a naive waif — when she’s had enough, she’ll move on (and probably tell all, too). Let her go through the motions of acting like a FLOTUS. There are much bigger issues with this White House than Melania choosing china for the dinner.
Elizabeth (Roslyn, NY)
Mrs. Trump's staff are "bracing for criticism". It's Sooo unfair! Well maybe if Mrs. Trump actually did something past the bare minimum people would not be curious or critical. Of course she is allowed to conduct herself as First Lady as she so chooses. If Melania chooses to stay under the radar doing very little then she should expect comparison to previous First Ladies. She is not dumb and should stop complaining. As for the State dinner, of course the Trumps will do it 'their way' as with everything else. Throw out traditions like working a full 8 hours as POTUS or properly vetting candidates for administration positions. Throw out traditions like taking up a cause and promoting it (more than 1X). The Trump family grifters do it their way. The POTUS has become so toxic he is not even invited to traditional events. At least Melania shows up and performs without incident sometimes. It's a pathetic situation at the White House. Let Melania show of her wardrobe. It's what she does best. Who's paying for it I wonder? I wouldn't put it past Trump to bill the RNC for it.
Anthony (Orlando)
Count me out to malign the First Lady. I do detest her Husband. But I would not attack her or her minor son. It is a southern thing.
samuelclemons (New York)
I would have encouraged secession save the literature & the Smokies. Bye, See Ya.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
I wouldn't attack her. But neither would I presume that she stands any taller or straighter than the man she choose to marry. My presumption, in fact, is that she's just as awful as he is, until evidence to the contrary is provided.
Mary Owens (Boston)
@Anthony, it's not just a southern thing, I live up north and don't want to malign her either. She is well-mannered, tries to remain dignified during all of her husband's outbursts, and their son is innocent of the sins of his father and can't be held accountable. Won't be the first time that one spouse has decent manners and the other is a classless boor. It's just the first time that a US president is this overtly gross. Certainly one for the record books!
Cato (Oakland)
Throws out tradition? Good. He's thrown out diplomatic tradition and is getting far more to show for it than his two predecessors. Tradition is what got us into trouble with North Korea and the South China Seas, the Middle East, and Russia. The Left just can't stand this guy even when he is right. You've lowered yourselves to his level and it is you that looks the worse for wear.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
Even a broken clock is right twice a day, but Trump is lucky to ever be right in any way, and usually when by some miracle he does happen to be right he immediately changes his mind and does the reverse.
CH (Europe)
Please do tell us when he will be right... Don't be a snowflake - we are fighting fire with fire. Don't like the medicine? Tough look - you have gotten used to dishing out and the whining about wanting to be treated fairly. We are over it and will show you - low blows? -> check; cheating? -> check All the things Republicans got away with in the past. Not anymore.... We take it to the lowest level necessary and then some
Lifelong New Yorker (NYC)
Oh, the "Left" this and the "Left" that... I wish there really were a viable "Left". "Left" has no meaning anymore since it applies to all we have which is neo-libs and faux "progressives".
Howard Levine (Middletown Twp., PA)
Tradition, all 246 years of it, went out the window the day Trump walked into the White House!
Howard Levine (Middletown Twp., PA)
should read 242 years
ShePersists (Western WA)
It is unfortunate, that they chose to set tradition aside, for the dinner. The thing that make a State Dinner "State" level, is attention to detail and tradition. If one abandons tradition, it's not much more than another dinner, that happens to be at the White House. The French are VERY concerned with detail and tradition and this will not be missed, by President Macron.
Pedrito (Denver)
Well, if we are sticking to European standards of tradition, Elizabeth II should be sponsoring the State dinner for us colonials at Buckingham Palace and a Bourbon, not Macron, should be in attendance...I guess the Don wasn't Tweeting enough today so the NYT picked up this tidbit for us to ruminate on.
Mike K (LOs Angeles, CA)
This is just hilarious. The DC "in group" lives for these big events. DC is about status and exhibitionism more than policy. Good for Trump !
Rob (Boston MA)
hmm, yet Trump had to have a big military exhibition for Macron and watch tomorrow he will tout the state dinner as the biggest and best ever-- oh, nothing status-y and exhibitionist about that.
KathyinCT (Fairfield County CT)
You actually talk about exhibitionism in terms of others? And not the biggest PT Barnum of all -- Trump. Who said "Forget state dinners," "they cost a fortune," "we should eat burgers" and now it's lamb and goat cheese.
CH (Europe)
So you are telling me he and his gaudy gold plated life are not about status (un-earned) and exhibitionism???
John (Upstate NY)
What "tradition" surrounding State dinners has been thrown out? Inviting the press? Inviting some legislators from the other party? I'm not sure how hard and fast this kind of thing has solidified into a tradition that is expected to be adhered to. It's an event about our State relationships with another sovereign State, not about our internal politics or about the tastes and preferences of our President. And BTW, leave Melania alone. She is suffering enough at the unbelievable turn her life has taken, even if you are secretly enjoying her suffering through something she didn't think she signed up for.
Billy Markland (Overland Park, KS)
John, I suspect that the tradition that was said to have ended was that domestic politics ended at the water's edge. However, I fear that tradition really ended with the election of Obama.
Lynda Taylor (Quebec, Canada)
Not enjoying anyone’s suffering, but she has signed up for Trump and all that entails. Another enabler for what reward? She is just eye candy .
Kally (Kettering)
It’s a State dinner. Our “State” is both Republican and Democrat. This is wrong, but what do you expect. He can’t handle the heat, or act gracious for one evening, the big baby.
Chris (Virginia)
So glad all Americans will be represented at this state dinner. Some by actual people, but most by dinner plates and dead tree branches. Characterizing this as bipartisanship is asinine. As usual, Trump defines himself not so much by those he invites, but by those he excludes. And he wonders why so few showed up for his inauguration.
mlmarkle (State College, Pa)
Everything we read about Melania Trump just serves to reinforce how little we know her. Though I love that she will serve vegetables from Michelle's garden and that she appears to be kind to her staff, I still migrate through my own responses to her, from watching her very real joy with children, to her ironic anti-cyber bullying campaign, to her inappropriately wearing designer, spiked heels to visit with hurricane victims, I cannot help but feel some form of empathy for a woman who remains married to such a horrible little man. It was, of course, her choice. But seriously, how much more debauchery will she take from him and how long will she subject her child to a father with no moral center?
Jacquie (Iowa)
She is in it for the money and won't be leaving any time soon.
steve (Hudson Valley)
Until she outlives him or the terms of her prenuptial agreement.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
What makes you think she's any better a person than Trump? Because presumably she's got two X chromosomes?
notfooled (US)
Remember when Michelle Obama wore sleeveless dresses and Barack in his tan suit for a press conference and Republicans had a collective apoplexy about teh End of Western Civilization because the Obamas were "inappropriate" and did not respect the traditions of the White House? I'm waiting for that same condemnation to rain down on Trump and his current wife, but I guess when white, rich, conservative people do it, ditching White House protocols for state dinners is refreshing and modern...as is golfing during the funeral of a former First Lady.
Sharon5101 (Rockaway Park)
Obama didn't go to Nancy Reagan's funeral.
N. Smith (New York City)
And sleeveless dress are cool too, as long as it's not Michelle Obama who's wearing them...
DVX (NC)
Yeah, staff. "Don't worry." Pay no attention to the megalomaniac with the sixth-grade intellect and the eighth-grade manners who will have every one of you thrown out of what's left of this country if there's one carpet fiber out of place.
Njlatelifemom (NJregion)
Since the Trumps thrive on upending the dignity that heretofore accompanied the Presidency, here’s a suggestion for taking it up a notch. Melania, go for it, spill the beans and divorce the cad now. Write a tell all—it will outsell Jim Comey’s book and his has outsold them all. You leave with gobs of money and your own dignity. You won’t be stuck with an aging playboy.
Alex Vine (Tallahassee, Florida)
About what you'd expect from a president who hasn't a trace of character or decency. Good God what I wouldn't give to see someone, anyone, go up to him and spit right in his face, if for no other reason than to see his reaction to being on the receiving end of what he does to everybody else.
fast/furious (the new world)
We can dream.....
Yertle (NY)
Throw Out Tradition: McDonald's and Cokes for everyone! A round of golf and entertainment provided by Stormy Daniels. Let's really buck tradition and stop making this thing a "woman's job!" It's not a gender specific skill to be able to put together a guest list, pick dishes, food, and flowers. Can we please move to the 21st century?!
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa)
The Roosevelts entertained the British monarchs with a hot dog cookout on their lawn in Hyde Park and supposedly the monarchs enjoyed it.
Kally (Kettering)
It would have Bill’s duty had the election gone the other way. And he would have used a staff of women probably.
Steve Acho (Austin)
The most divisive president in history is shunning both the opposition party and the media. I'm a little surprise no one was Fox News was invited. Or are they finally being honest with themselves and no longer being considered media?
Horace Dewey (NYC)
Just watched the CSPAN video of Macron's arrival yesterday. The video began with a stunning display of all the trappings of office, summoning -- even for this cynic -- powerful memories of similar momentous events I have seen in previous administrations. I was born during the Truman administration and I've seen quite a few Then came Trump. And perhaps more than at any other time during this already nightmarish year, I saw clearly and painfully just where this repulsive, crude and mendacious human being has taken this institution, this country. I am confident that all of these soiled and ruptured institutions will rebound. After all, our greatness has never been some kind of mythical perfection, but our ability to correct injustices, eliminate corruption, and recover from the acts of those who would dishonor our most basic values. Until that happens, we need to brace ourselves for even more more hate and ugliness and do every constitutionally protected thing we can to drive this bacteria from the body politic.
DAS (San Diego)
Your 4th paragraph was inspired and a great reflection on our republic.
MDB (Indiana)
Cherry blossoms from the Obamas; china from the Clintons. Who said bipartisanship is dead? While this is a state dinner, it should still concern all of us that this White House excludes the press, seemingly at will. This is not how this country works.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
I think most of us are concerned about Trump in office. Let's all push the parties and independents to do some REAL vetting of the candidates and then vote next election. I’m tired of rich folks buying the presidency. I want someone in power who has served his or her country in some way that would prepare them to lead a nation of good intentions but little discipline. We need to lower our debt. Trump and Melania are going to party us into the poorhouse.
JC (Brooklyn)
Oh, its exactly how this country works and always has. The current crew is just willing to throw it in everyone's face.
George S (New York, NY)
Having the press cover the dinner is quite a separate thing from having them dine as guests. The latter in no way affects the First Amendment, just their bloated egos.
Judith (ny)
The headline here is apt and applies to everything Trump touches -- of which this state dinner is only one example. In fact, the Trumps have effectively 'thrown out' tradition, dignity, respect, statesmanship, intellectual curiosity, values and human decency. Everything they touch turns to poison.
Occupy Government (Oakland)
So, "hints at bipartisanship" include the Clinton's china? I get all warm inside. Does the president even know when he's being played?
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
It's our china—not the Clintons, not the Bush's, not the Trump’s. We bought it.
Susan (Miami)
There is at least one Democrat on the list, according to a White House official: John Bel Edwards, the governor of Louisiana.
ChesBay (Maryland)
Susan--Republican-Lite. Makes sense.
Dave DiRoma (Baldwinsville NY)
On the whole, Mrs. Trump (we're not on a first name basis) seems like a nice enough person who, for reasons only she knows, is married to a not very nice man. Although I don't like her husband (and that pre-dates his current job. I thought he was a buffoon in the 1980's), she seems to be making an attempt to keep a relatively low profile and avoiding controversy. There is no official job description for First Ladies, although it seems that traditionally they serve as official hostess for state functions, so planning for this dinner is probably appropriate. It's also a political event, which I'm sure the Donald put his stamp on by not inviting any Democrats. Probably not her fault.
DH (Miami Beach, FL)
Seriously? She’s a “birther” who is married to and supports a man proud of his sexual assaults, racism, misogyny and homophobia. She has made choices, and must be held accountable for them. She does NOT get a “pass!”
AMG (Los Angeles)
If Mrs. Trump was in charge of the dinner . . . then it is her responsibility to host it properly. She could easily have declined and no one would have given it another thought. Either you give Mrs. Trump too much credit, as in a pass for her outrageous partisan behavior, or, Mr. Trump himself directed this. One thing is clear though, whether Mr. or Mrs. Trump excluded all Democrats, they both know its wrong, and so does the World.
Meredith branch (Portland, Oregon)
To the French white flowers are used for funerals, not dinner. Oops
Ulko S (Cleveland)
This is America
Sherr29 (New Jersey)
Ulko -- doesn't matter that "this is America" -- we are honoring the leader of another nation -- we do it by honoring their customs.
M (Seattle)
Melania is a class act.
Shappy0 (Youngstown, Ohio)
Really? That's why she went along with the birther nonsense??
CS (Florida)
Melania doesn't get a pass from me. She has tethered herself to the most deplorable man imaginable which makes her a fool not a class act.
notfooled (US)
If you consider birtherism, nude photo spreads, and calling women who accused Trump of assault "liars" then, sure.
Chris (Cave Junction)
Partisan bickering stops at the water's edge, and so with a State Dinner, there should be bipartisanship: that is the grand tradition that Trump is throwing out. All this other pap about Mrs. Trump holding together for a dinner is beside the point.
Norma (Albuquerque, NM)
Only one Democrat invited to the dinner does not signal bipartisanship.
Matt J. (United States)
I corrected the title: "Trumps Throw Out Class for Their First State Dinner". But what did you expect from Trump? There is a reason for protocol and etiquette, and that is that it allows you to build a relationship and work with others that may not agree 100% with you. Once Trump no longer has his sycophants in control of Congress, he will get nothing done.
LivingWithInterest (Sacramento)
Melania is doing a great job; there is no quarrel with her. The purpose of the State dinner is to reach-out, offer an olive branch, and create friendship in the face of tensions across the oceans and across the aisle. trump's bullying and power-mongering to his 'other' guests, is on full display with his purposeful disdain toward 1/2 of our government: not inviting Democratic Leadership. This childish behavior will not be lost on Macron!
MissyR (Westport, CT)
Let’s not forget Melania has no staff because she does not support a significant cause as FLOTUS, publicly supported her husband’s birther nonsense, lifted a speech from our last first lady, and took a $69,000. spa day trip to Palm Beach at taxpayer’s expense. Just because she stays silent and puts up with her cheating spouse doesn’t mean she’s dignified or doing a good job in her current role.
Jane Doe (The Morgue)
And the democrats are the adults in the room? Really?
BB (MA)
The olive branch, the reach-out, the friendship is aimed at France and Macron. That is the purpose of the state dinner, not Streisand or Beyonce.
Munger (PA)
Taxpayers fund state dinners. By limiting the guest list to Republicans, we are not fully represented. It is an affront to democracy and the world sees it. As a Republican event, let the GOP pay for it and have it at the Trump hotel, not our White House.
NYHUGUENOT (Charlotte, NC)
"As a Republican event, let the GOP pay for it and have it at the Trump hotel, not our White House." That might fly afoul of the "Emolument Clause".
Allen82 (Mississippi)
Why is this important? ~"In interviews, several of the first lady’s media-skittish East Wing aides..."~ Who cares whether the State Dinner is "Traditional" and whether one set of china is used rather than another? The stock market will not crash. Modern society as we define it will not collapse. Who are the critics that create this false standard of setting a table for 150 people? I hate trump but this goes too far. Concentrate on the fact that he has lied to, and conned, his constituency about matters such as the "beautiful" health care benefits that will never materialize.
Kim Murphy (Upper Arlington, Ohio)
I'm helping to pay for this stupid dinner and I want Democrats there.
Cruzio (California )
Bet Cohen made the pick. Even with all the impending indictments, he still sits on the RNC FINANCE board.
Rickibobbi (CA )
Why stop at not inviting dems? Trump should, as I'm sure he wants to, just sell spots to the dinner, raise money for inner city youth golf programs/coupons, only good for Trump branded courses.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
I’m watching Trump's charade of being a statesman, attempting to pass himself off as an honorable and civilized leader of a once-great, now-sullied nation. I hope he's content with his "military parade" (please don’t let this be only the first step toward something larger). He looks rather like an orange bulldog, uncomfortable in his overcoat, not sure when to salute or where to put his hand during the national anthem, standing beside Macron who certainly appears more at ease in the role of national leader. Melania looks regal enough, a bit like a fish out of water—clad in a skirt perhaps a tad too tight across the buttocks for a First Lady—she reminds me of John-John standing at attention and saluting his father's casket but not really sure of what's going on. I can’t help but wonder what it is that keeps her at Trump's side—their marriage seems so tawdry—not because of anything she's done recently. Stormy wasn’t invited, but she's there. This show, this ostentatious display of inelegant elegance proves what to whom? It shows that our military can look pretty snappy. It shows that someone somewhere knows protocol, but when it’s only used to impress, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. It shows that you can put lipstick on a pig, but that doesn’t make it a swan. Trump is Trump and a military show doesn’t make him a statesman. Lots of show and little substance—rather symbolic of what we've become. (I wonder if he'll suggest that France should pay for the pomp?)
Eve Waterhouse (Vermont)
"A tad too tight across the buttocks"? Yikes. Ouch. Not that ANYONE should be focusing on this, but I think she goes out of her way to dress modestly,
NYHUGUENOT (Charlotte, NC)
At least she knows when to wear a garment with sleeves and not look like she's on the way to the gym.
DR (New England)
Eve Waterhouse - If by modestly you mean she's finally begun wearing clothes (see the photos from her "modeling" days) then yes I suppose so.
Linda (Virginia)
I thought this article would say more about how rare, or not, the partisan guest list is for a state dinner, especially an administration's first. I'm not really worried about Melania keeping up her end of this. I have a feeling she is open to sound advice from her professional staff.
Mother (California)
FLOTUS is a very important female symbol spoken thru the language of what she wears and what she says. This FLOTUS says very little publically and her visuals of pictures in the media are stricly sexy fashion plate. I am amazed she is continuously in 6” heels. And nearly always in something very tight and slim. There is nothing wrong with her choices but they are not befitting or dignified enough for FLOTUS. The huge white hat ridiculously dominated the White House Lawn picture and made Brigette Macron, her guest of honor, look insignificant. By contrast Michelle Obama was a fashion intellectual perfectly choosing her clothes for all the events she attended and spoke at. Mrs Macron is dressed in a very dignified suit and heels of normal height not screaming sexuality or fashionista.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa)
Remarks in this piece from aides praising Mrs. Trump's abilities as a decorator, linguist and whiz at protocol are not entirely unbelievable as she is the wife of a wealthy business man and has undoubtedly done a lot of entertaining. She has also worked in Europe and has probably picked up about as much of the lingo as she has English. But relying on quotes from White House aides who will never say a critical word about anything Trump is a problem. We can see this with the news of the Trump doctor, also in the news today. If you believe him you will believe that Trump is 6'3", weighs 239, is mentally fit and will live to be 200, when one's lying eyes clearly tell you that couldn't be right. It was good though to see the photos of some of the people who assisted in the planning of the event.
Jane Doe (The Morgue)
Michelle Obama always looked as if she just came out of a TARGET.
Sarah (Chicago)
While Melania's dress may not be to your taste, I think it's a stretch to say it's generally undignified or unbefitting (agree the hat was a miss though). This comment is dressed up shaming.
Bullmoose (France)
While lambs are born in the spring, any lamb that is slaughtered in the spring was born at least 9 months ago. And nectarines are not the harbingers of spring. White House Chef needs a tutorial on the seasons. Where are the peas, asparagus, morels, mint, ramps, fava beans, shad, soft shell crabs, radishes, strawberries and bounty of the Mid-Atlantic?
Ceilidth (Boulder, CO)
In the ranching world lamb is the term used for sheep up to a year old.
Bullmoose (France)
Yes, and mutton after a year. Spring lamb on a plate is a misnomer and one can hope that the White House serves Shenandoah valley lamb from the Mid-Atlantic, but it is unlikely.
Eric (California)
I bet they’ll also serve water there, just like the Obamas and Clintons did! We wouldn’t be anywhere near this level of bipartisanship with a Democratic or even a democratically elected administration!
carb (West of the Mississippi)
Has Mnuchin reimbursed for his personal use of Air Force1, taking his bride to see th eclipse & some other vacay travel with his show-off wife? Sweet peas & lilacs in the dining room? Both are very fragrant so not necessarily the best choices while eating.
Robert Campbell (San Diego, CA)
Making America small one petty act at a time.
Amy (Brooklyn)
Hats off to Melina and Donald. We know they can do glitz but this dinner will make the guests comfortable - and, after all, that`s goal of most diplomacy.
Olenska (New England)
Until Trump stands up to give a toast and starts ranting about Hilary’s emails or Comey’s leaks or how many electoral votes he won ...
KathyinCT (Fairfield County CT)
Comfortable? Macron is not a dunce. He knows that half of the Senators who play such an important role in foreign affairs weren't even considered for an invitation.
Tina McKenna (Milton, NY)
What about this will make the guests comfortable? Not attacking you, just curious.
Emile Myburgh (Johannesburg)
He could at least have invited Stormy Daniels too, you know, as a gesture of good will.
Kim Murphy (Upper Arlington, Ohio)
It would have evened out the room; she and Melania have both gotten naked for money, and no doubt slept with Trump out of a sense of obligation. It seems unfair for Mme. Macron, a classy woman who apparently adores her husband, to be stuck with Melania.
PeterC (BearTerritory)
No Democrats but he is serving Chappaquiddick chowder with a sour greens infusion
Realworld (International)
A prawn-cocktail and finger-food charm offensive. Lobster-bibs will have the presidential seal. Next stop: Versailles.
Majortrout (Montreal)
The Trumpkoffs will not be inviting the press or the Democrats to the State Dinner. So what kind of "state" dinner is this?
Jonathan (Princeton, NJ)
How nice, a party for Donald and his besties! This is not a "state dinner" without the presence of Democrats, who form a significant part of the government.
Concernicus (Hopeless, America)
Of course it is. The democrats have become mostly irrelevant. Until they start nominating and electing candidates who are more than just republican-lites, they shall remain largely marginalized. Why invite a DINO, republican lite congress critter when you can invite the real thing? I say that as a liberal who barely acknowledges remaining in what was once known as the democratic party.
DCBinNYC (The Big Apple)
Maybe Trump will drink. Maybe that will help.
samuelclemons (New York)
hes been there and done that.
Javaforce (California)
It’s seems like the POTUS is extremely afraid of appearing before people who might disagree with him. This dinner without any significant Democrats is just one more example. Lincoln had his team of rivals while Trump has a team of shameless fawns.
BS (long island)
Did Stormy Daniels make the cut?
cbd212 (Massachusetts)
Her name is Stephanie Clifford and she has shown more honesty and more class than most of the members of the trump cabal.
Len (Pennsylvania)
You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig. Donald Trump officiating over a state dinner will add yet another level of low class to the presidency. When he was campaigning he would often rant about how cheeseburgers should be the fare at these types of dinners. Lord help us.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
I think the Lord gave up on us when we put this joke in office.
Name (Here)
Hey, cheese! that's better than I expected. Freedumb fries too?
Wezilsnout (Indian Lake NY)
While the president of France dines on lamb and jambalaya, our "president" will be eating Le Big Mac. In deference to the classy occasion, he'll be dining off a plate instead of the traditional paper wrapping. Biggest question: will he bring up "crooked Hillary" in his prepared remarks?
FunkyIrishman (member of the resistance)
Regardless of party, the President of the United ( you know like all 50 of them > not just the red ones ) States is supposed to be the leader and representative to all of its citizens. The President of France should have declined to attend, based solely on this.
Jane Doe (The Morgue)
I would not be surprised if some dems were invited, but declined to make DJT look bad.
socal60 (california)
Melania Trump, a birther let's not forget, former model with questionable taste about how she used her body (well, that's current too, isn't it?) isn't fit to select a plate out of the china closet of past administrations - any of them. As far as the administration's choice of guests - they'd probably put something vile in any democrat's food so best they not attend.
scrumble (Chicago)
Again, how was it that she gained citizenship?
Sherry (Tennessee)
A bit of dis and dat.
Lawrence (Washington D.C.)
Insufficient genuflecting, prostrations and thank yous by the Dems. And the possibility of bringing an adult movie star and playboy bunny as dates. He should reconsider considering the ratings that the dinner would bring.
franko (Houston)
Would anyone like to bet that our Fearless Leader has a clue that, without the French army, the French navy, and loads of French money, there would be no United States of America?
Amy (Brooklyn)
Yes, I`ll be that he has a clue.
JimmyMac (Valley of the Moon)
France's contributions to our War of Independence led her to near bankruptcy and a revolution of her own.
John J. (Orlean, Virginia)
Rather surprised that "Freedom Fries" aren't on the menu and that Ted Nugent isn't the entertainment but I guess Trump wanted to curry favor with his base by having the National Opera instead.
samuelclemons (New York)
My suggestions would include Liberace, Lawrence Welk and a Polka band from Cleveland. Aviedezane/Dasvedania.
Observer (Pa)
some so called aspects of "tradition" are not so. Beyonce, Streisand or Clooney have no obvious business being there, nor do members of the press. What is missing however, is respect. The Trumps have no respect for staff,Legislators, the Judiciary, the Law or indeed, ordinary people.Their motto is not "America First" but 'It's all about Trump".It is their lack of class or manners ,as much as (at least his) lack of morals ,education or desire to learn, that makes them such an embarrassment. This is patronage at it's best. The King is hosting a banquet for his Court, not the French President.
Dra (Md)
Why no press? It’s an official state function paid for by the taxpayers dime. I for one want to know if the Royalle with Cheese will be on the menu.
Herje51 (Ft. Lauderdale)
Touché
Expat (London)
@Dra. Well, Mr Trump thinks all news are fake news especially when there are negative things about him. He only considers Fox News as "real" and perhaps some of them may be on the invite list.
DPT (Ky)
How can you sponsor a state dinner and invite one Democrat . Nothing will be accomplished in this administration without bipartisan working relationship. It looks a lot like Russian government. So sad
Susan (Miami)
The Democratic Governor of Louisiana will attend.
Judy Murphy (USA)
Susan, that's the 2nd time you brought this up. Are we Democrats suppose to be impressed with this token invite? We're not.
cbd212 (Massachusetts)
He's more of a DINO than what most people would consider to be, the only thing that can be going on is this is a nod to American imperialism - we bought Louisiana from France. This man is not a true Democrat.
tartz (Philadelphia,PA)
So, with there being such a short-list of invitees, I guess there's little reason to wait by the mailbox for my invitation??
L Hoffman (Cedarhurst, NY)
The parallels (contrasts) to the fictional "An American President" abound. When I read that no Democrats from Congress were invited to attend the dinner, I wasn't surprised. At every opportunity, Donald Trump shows how small he can be. Sean Spicer, the most devout Catholic of the trip to the Vatican was excluded when the Americans met the Pope. I recall the Mitt Romney grovel for Secretary of State. Pundits are creating a "special relationship" between Macron and Trump. There are no relationships with a soulless life form.
Brewster Millions (Santa Fe, N.M.)
President Trump. Making America Great Again, Keeping America Safe, and forging lasting relationships with our most trusted international partners.
Sarah (Arlington, Va.)
President Trump. Making America Hated Again. Keeping America Unsafe, and destroying all former relationships with our formally most trusted international partners. There, I fixed it.
susheela8 (Fairbanks, AK)
Well sad.
fast/furious (the new world)
President Trump - ripping children from the arms of their undocumented parents. No humanity in evidence. We are ashamed of him.
klm atlanta (atlanta)
Let's hope the President doesn't go the "Two Scoops" route.
Southern Boy (Rural Tennessee Rural America)
Not since Jacqueline Kennedy has there been a First Lady with the beauty, grace, charm, and sophistication of Melania Trump.
Jane Eyrehead (California)
Oh, dream on. I think all of the first ladies since then have done very well. They deserve some credit, too.
Miss Ley (New York)
It will, and continues to be Michelle Obama for this American with her flair, spunk and kindness, ice and fire in her expressive eyes. In all fairness, 'Versailles' is enchanted with the looks of Mrs. Trump, who lacks the cachet, the savoir-faire and uniqueness of the former First Lady who does not wear heels when traversing flooded emergency regions in the States.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa)
I would compare Melania to Mary Todd Lincoln and Mary would come out way ahead.
marriea (Chicago, Ill)
Will Trump at least invite his siblings? Melania's parents? Trump truly doesn't have friends, does he?
Judith (ny)
Trump doesn't even own a pet. He's most comfortable with fatburgers, chocolate cake and Fox News.
Judy Murphy (USA)
Well, to be fair, Cohen and Hannity are kinda like his pets.
fast/furious (the new world)
@Judith - artist Richard Prince has claimed that Trump paid a settlement in New York in the 1990s after he kicked someone's Irish Setter. A man who abuses dogs isn't worth knowing.
Christy (WA)
Like Louis XIV, Trump will try to convince Macron that "l'etat c'est moi," no bipartisanship here (Louisiana's governor being the only Frenchified Democrat allowed). Macron will see through it and fly home without a U.S. commitment to stick with the Iran deal. And Trump will continue to press for his military parade which is, of course, far more important than denuclearizing Iran.
Sarah (Arlington, Va.)
At least Louis XIV left l'etat francais some of the most beautiful buildings surviving many centuries, while our wannabe sun king is proud of Mar-a-Gaudy, a property that will probably underwater in a few decades.
Daniel James Shigo (NYC)
So the symbolism here is that the assembled guests will eat off the Democrats, the party of actual fiscal responsibility.
Jim (Placitas)
120 people have been invited? I didn't think there were 120 people left in this administration.... where did they find them all, on the Mall?
Name (Here)
Certainly not 120 who'd want to be seen with Trump. Maybe that is why there are no democrats - first feelers all got "nyet"
BK (Boston)
No. Behind the mall.
Jeffrey Waingrow (Sheffield, MA)
Mr. Macron will likely be quick to mention that he prefers his steaks perfectly overcooked and that ketchup is his favorite condiment. Still, Freedom Fries is where he may have to draw the line.
Gene (Fl)
I'm just sorry that real heads of state, actual leaders who know and understand the needs of their nations and of the world have to put up with this buffoon.
Concernicus (Hopeless, America)
No one forced President and Mrs. Macron to attend. They chose to do so. Perhaps they enjoy the company of President and Mrs. Trump, as well as the opportunity to strengthen the relationship between our nations. Somewhat similar to the relationship enjoyed by the Trump's and the Abe's.
fast/furious (the new world)
@Concernicus - we've heard repeatedly that Macron is here to try to convince Trump not to tear up the Iran Agreement. Macron will be followed later this week by a visit from Angela Merkel, on the same mission. Macron and Merkel are trying to get along with Trump to influence his stupid positions on the Climate Accord and the Iran agreement, for the good of everyone on this planet. I think they're heroes.
KBD (San Diego)
Was Trump Wine served? Wonder what M. Macron thought of that?
Paul Ashton (Willimantic, Ct.)
The answer to the most important question is missing. Will Trump get two nectarine tarts to everyone else’s one?
Colonel Belvedere (San Francisco)
The guests are having the tart. President Trump has requested a Frosty.
Frank (Colorado)
Trump, who personalizes everything in life and is monumentally insecure, probably worried about inviting people who would reject the invitation. His encouragement of tribalism is directly counter to the way in which America was designed to work. Compromise - now a dirty word and considered a sign of weakness - is the foundation of the democratic republic. Macron is wasting his time and that of his country. This is no more than a "Special Episode" of the "Trump is President, Can You Believe It?" show.
That's what she said (USA)
Trump on news this morning. He looked good. All Presidential and mouth shut. Melania looked more French than Brigitte Macron. What Americans figure a French President wife would look like. No fault there--she's trying.......
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
I feel bad for Melania.
Maria Ivon (PA)
Nothing to feel bad about for Melania. She is a willing participant in this "partnership". She's got zero self-respect. She's been a birther, a defender of her "husband" about his Access Hollywood comments about women, she looks the other way as he continuously bullies his way on Twitter even though she's supposedly working on anti-bullying, and who knows what else. She's made made bed with this man, and has chosen to sleep in it (or IS she?)
Unpresidented (Los Angeles)
I feel bad because of Melania.
Sharon J (Cleveland, Ohio)
I hope the White House publishes the recipe for Jambalaya.
ChrisH (Earth)
Some people will just write off the lack of Democrats as the usual partisan politics, but what it really represents is the latest step in a slow but steady effort to silence anyone not toeing the GOP line. Put into context, with things like GOP-gerrymandered congressional districts, the GOP's refusal to do their Constitutional duty and consider Judge Garland for the US Supreme Court, the GOP's voter-intimidation at the polls and their voter fraud conspiracy theories, the GOP's apparent lack of concern for the fact we are repeatedly being attacked by Russia with acts of war in the cyberspace, Trump's repeated and constant attacks on and attempts to silence his critics, this is a bloodless (so far) coup. Will the country wake up before it's too late? Is it already too late?
Kally (Kettering)
A gerrymandered state dinner...
meo (nyc)
We at the bottom have only our vote unless/until something egregious happens and we can take to the streets and make noise or worse. You would think that powerful figures like the French President and his wife would stand in solidarity with the American people who are daily losing their democracy to Trump and his tyrannical buffoons. Sadly, i agree with you ChrisH, the only lamb being served here are the Americans - a Nation of Sheep.
Crusader Rabbit (Tucson, AZ)
If Macron is a student of French history he should feel right at home having dinner with the Trump’s. I expect it will be eerily reminiscent of the court of Louis XVI.
Sarah (Arlington, Va.)
Don't insult Louis XVI and his court. He and his courtiers had superb taste, were highly educated and could spell to boot.
FunkyIrishman (member of the resistance)
Regardless of party, the President of the United ( you know like all 50 of them > not just the red ones ) States is supposed to be the leader and representative to all of its citizens. The President of France should have declined to attend, based solely on this.
al (NJ)
Only loyalty is invited? I'll pass.
Billy Bob (Greensboro NC)
Nice to know that Melania is not just eye candy for the president, bu that she is her own woman and can make decision and advocate causes.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa)
Causes like birtherism. And she needs an aide to even plagiarize a speech.
George S (New York, NY)
As the comments will no doubt show - even before the event - some commenters will waste no tidbit of vitriol to trash Mrs. Trump. There is no indication that this affair will not be beautifully presented and will represent us well to a visiting foreign head of state. Frankly, I have not one tear to shed for the celebrity A-listers, journalists, and vast array of hangers on riddling DC that invitations were scarce. The State Dinner is not held to slake their massive egos.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
Correct, the state dinner was not for the ego of anyone but Trump.
KathyinCT (Fairfield County CT)
Have seen no comments about Mrs. Trump so quit with that red herring. Have seen no tears over "A-listers" and whoever else you listed. But don't see you saying it's OK to not invite ONE Democratic leader. Not one. If the midterms change the composition of the House and/or Senate, Trump will need Democrats but he is too dumb to realize that. And even if they don't, there are moderate GOPers who won't follow his orders. Remember REPEAL Obamacare? Not inviting ANY Democrats across the board is just childish and vicious.
cbd212 (Massachusetts)
Just look at it as your tax dollars at work - and none of your representatives were invited, you, in effect are not represented. So, this is just another case of the kakocracy enjoying the fruits of your labor. Salut!
Molybdenum (Seattle)
I'm sure the event will be elegant, enjoyed fully or at least in part by those lucky enough to attend. Melania has a background in design and speaks French; President Trump knows a thing or two about hospitality. I trust the US and the American people will be well-represented, hopefully to a small, receptive French audience -- especially one willing to discuss, among several, the issues of Iran and Syria. The other commenters provide the reasons their thought leaders weren't invited.
rms (SoCal)
I doubt that Trump knows much about hospitality, but I can absolutely promise you he knows nothing about Iran and/or Syria. Which will be obvious to any knowledgeable person who speaks with him. Embarrassing for our country, to say the least.
Molybdenum (Seattle)
And, as if on cue, my point is proven.
cbd212 (Massachusetts)
trump knows nothing about manners, or hospitality. Ask the citizens of New York. He is what he is, the grandson of a bordello keeper, the son of a racist who paid massive fines to the USG for his discriminatory habits and a habitual liar and braggart. Just the kind of person one's own family might think twice about inviting to lunch, let alone dinner. The commentators are right.
beth reese (nyc)
Melania Trump has chosen a wonderful menu, lovely wines and beautiful flower arrangements for this dinner. I have a feeling that our SCPOTUS was barred from having any input-thank heaven!
Drew (Durham NC)
Once you throw out the law and Constitution, getting rid of the dinner party rules is easy!
George S (New York, NY)
"dinner party rules"? Must have missed that one in federal code!
Norma (Albuquerque, NM)
Guidelines exist for any entertaining done on behalf of, and paid by, the USG...that includes the White House.
Daniel Messing (New York City)
The message that President Macron will get loud and clear on his State Visit is this: The U.S is no longer a Civil Society. It is now the private domain of the “Ruling Party”to the exclusion of the rest. “Dissidents” (press, Democrats, and anyone that does not bow in obsequious admiration) to this ignorant madman is out. Melania Trump is right, no need to worry because if you belong to this gang of opportunists all is OK, and for the rest of us is probably too late.
Jack Chicago (Chicago)
Oh, come on NYT, you can do better than this! It's not fake news it's content-free nonsense.
Miss Ley (New York)
A French friend of a certain age and a femme de charme, once described her arrival in London where her husband was assigned as a diplomat and what they had for dinner at the welcoming club. When a Nation, with a love for fish and chips, goes into competition with the French and their bouillabaisse soup, pots and pans can start flying. The French like a little Southern Comfort, and pecan pie is usually welcome as an unknown delight. But in the spirit of Franco-American Alliance, the sharing of 'The Cronut', a pastry blend of a croissant and doughnut filled with cream, might bring a memorable evening to a festive and joyous end.
Deirdre (New Jersey )
The First Lady is wasting the opportunity of a lifetime to spend her time on party planning, while wearing clothing of foreign designers.
keb (new york)
Remember - she viewed it as an opportunity of a lifetime only when she thought of it in terms of financial remuneration. She dropped that lawsuit.
AA (Southampton, NY)
Jackie Kennedy (and other FLOTUS..ES) also wore clothing off foreign designers.
Jane Eyrehead (California)
The Givenchy outfit was a nod to the guests from France. Mrs. Obama sometimes wore designers that were a recognition of her guests or hosts. And Mrs. Kennedy loved French design. Our country is being run by thugs and grifters, but at least the FLOTUS can choose a menu and floral decor. Now I can sleep at night.
Sally Peabody (Boston)
How reassuring to know that Melania Trump is well organized and can pick a lovely flower scheme. How incredibly bipartisan that the State Dinner will use china from the Clinton era! And how radical.. lamb for dinner which I bet Macron will prefer rare and Trump will prefer incinerated. But wait, the big issues.. no democrats invited except a governor of Louisiana? None of the 'fake news' purveyors who have recently won Pulitizer prizes? Not even a Fox opinionista or two? I am not optimistic that Macron will be able to talk any sense into our belligerent President who cares not a whit for what our major allies think, particularly if his predecessor was in agreement and involved in a Treaty (of major significance for the present and future analyses of whether the West can stay with its promises... Kim Jung Un is watching). So let's enjoy a little French flair and hope that some Joie de Vivre opens up the mind of our sour-dispositioned President.
Fred (Bayside)
Yeah I love that bipartisan part. What a joke! Can't wait for Trump to meet Ms LePen next time he visits France, & he'll insist that it's just to be bipartisan. PS Melania Trump's job is to look like a model. Period. I for one think she's about as attractive as plastic -- because she has no personality & no skills.
WSF (Ann Arbor)
If you might recall, the French Flag flew over the city of New Orleans at one time. The Acadians went there after being thrown out of Canada by the British. Trump can at least accept some smart protocol actions when it comes to acknowledging a good French connection.
EGD (California)
The grossly flawed Iran ‘deal’ is not a treaty as it was never presented to the US Senate as a treaty to vote on as the Constitution requires. Here’s hoping the appalling Donald Trump can negotiate some of the more absurd aspects of the deal Pres Obama and John Kerry agreed to including giving the Mullahs several weeks notice before inspections of their nuclear sites can occur.
David (San Jose, CA)
So we can have a "nod to bipartisanship" in the dishes used - but no actual human beings who don't fawn at the feet of our dear leader? Donald Trump representing the United States of America at a state dinner is an embarrassment to our country.
EGD (California)
Indeed. Too bad we don’t have the opportunity for Mrs Clinton to solicit ‘donations’ from foreign visitors to the Clinton Foundation instead.
beth reese (nyc)
Yes it'a a disgrace but think if the wines poured were from Trump Winery? That might have sparked an international incident.
Miss Ley (New York)
Perhaps, David, but it will not be a staid and sober affair. Perhaps you remember a famous American General who had to attend a State Dinner in Paris and tweeted to a few friends that he wanted some time off and a beer. It was unfortunate but he had to tender his resignation. By the bye, what happened to The American Hamburger with a dill pickle? This used to be a big treat in Paris when I was a child at 'Le Drug Store' on the Champs Elysees, so keep it traditional American and simple fare.
