I have family who lives there. The town is filled with snotty residents who think that they are better than everyone. I would NEVER live there.

I have family that live in Syosset, and have visited the town many times. The author has done a good, overall article, but missed the great contributions of the area Jewish residents in the last 40 to 50 years. They have had a large part in building up the public school system, the Library, and have sizably contributed to the area medical community.
Just sipping my tea (here in the corner)
In an overview of an entire town, you feel slighted because the author didn't say, "And there's a lot of Jewish doctors"? Do you hear yourself?
MontanaOsprey (Back East Reluctantly)
No, not slighted. I just found it odd that a significant minority that helped build a top notch town school system and provided health care to the community was not mentioned at all. And no, I’m not Jewish.

Can someone please tell me how Syosset is home to many different socio-economic backgrounds if houses start at over 500k. This article should say Syosset is home to the upper middle class and the rich. Also, as for diversity, just want to point out Syosset is less than 1% Black/African American.

"East Asian and South Asian residents compose about 22 percent of the population" There are diverse ways to diversity...

Syosset is for sad ex NYC residents that could not afford private school in the big apple. Now the brag about how wonderful life is as they drive 45 minutes to get a bagel NYC always is the big APPLE

You really don’t know Syosset. Right across from the train station parking lot on the other side of Cold Spring Road is Bagelmasters. I’d put up their bagels against ANY in NYC.There’s no need to go anywhere else for them! (If you want to drive, you’re ten minutes from Cold Spring Harbor, which is very scenic, and delightful in spring and summer!)

Totally untrue. I live two blocks away from the downtown of Syosset and can walk to at least three different bagel shops. Keep believing your shoe box sized apartment for a family of four is the way everybody wants to live

Who wants to pay $60,000 for school anymore? I can only imagine the children who are raised there, not knowing anything beyond the bubble they live in. Syosset has one of the best public school systems in the state and nation for that matter
Dave from Auckland (Auckland)
The teachers I remember from my Syosset education - Mrs Devine (wasn't she?) in kindergarten, Ray Evans (first male teacher) in sixth grade and Richard Perlungher, simply the most courageous and entertaining teacher at the time in Syosset High School.

i remember the parents in Syosset Jericho...etc were always away leaving those homes to the daughters that loved loved the partyyyy ohh those 1970/s

I also the same two grade school teachers you named, and also Mrs. Reardon, Mrs. Handleman, Mrs. Hefner, Mrs. Summers, and Mrs. Engels. Hefner was mad for penmenship, Summers hammered the multiplication tables into our heads, and Engels offered us at least one early morning birding expedition. I also had Perlungher but have vague memories; an understated sense of humor? I took a half-year Irenology class with Greenspan, and loved it.

Great article about Syosset! I wish you had mentioned something about the Syosset Public Library. Last year we had nearly 391,000 visits to the library and loaned out 373,675 items. In addition to the lovely neighborhoods and great businesses, the Syosset Public Library is also a point of pride for the community.

I grew up just outside of Syosset and appreciate that it offers something for everyone. The homes are pricey, but the community is very down to Earth. If they could revitalize the main strip beyond (a very crowded LIRR stop), it would certainly add value. Glad to see towns like this getting the recognition they deserve. As someone who used to take the train in/from Syosset almost weekly, the commute isn't all that terrible.
Ernie in Berkeley (California)
I grew up there. In the 70s, downtown supported four supermarkets. Now there are none. Commuters walking home can't stop off for a carton of milk (but I guess CVS has milk). I home the Chamber of Commerce's proposal addresses this kind of thing.
Irina (New York)
The article forgot to mention a fun fact about Syosset-the actress Natalie Portman grew up there.
MontanaOsprey (Back East Reluctantly)
Yes, Natalie Hershlag is a Syosset High grad.

The drive from the Hicksville train station to syosset is not a short one.
MontanaOsprey (Back East Reluctantly)
Ok. How is this relevant when there’s a LIRR station in the heart of Syosset?
Donald Glover (Syosset NY)
Are you the person that paid for this article? 1) The LIRR Station is horrible (I commute everyday). It's always slippery and the gap is way too big. 2) There is barely any ethnic diversity. In my middle school class there were two Hispanic kids and no black kids. 3) The kids that live here are rude and act as though they own the world. It's filled with spoiled little brats. 4) I'm surprised tumbleweeds don't rumble down the streets of Syosset. It is a DEAD town. There is absolutely no culture and it is the most boring place I have ever been.
Matt Green (Westbury NY)
It’s only relevant to the extent the article mentioned that some Syosset residents prefer the more frequent service and quicker commute from Hicksville.
