Police Identify Woman Who Wounded 3 at YouTube and Killed Herself; Motive Is Unclear

This has got to be a first. The irony of someone advocating for animal rights and veganism taking a handgun, driving hundreds of miles, and shooting three innocent strangers because she was unhappy with the company where they were employed? California has stricter gun laws than most. Other media outlets (this article needs an update as this is a fairly important story) are reporting that her family notified law enforcement that she left home and might be headed to YouTube with nefarious motives. Police officers found her sleeping in her car in Mountain View and decided she wasn't a threat to herself or others. (How many times have we heard this story?) The family directly warning law enforcement that she was a potential threat wasn't sufficient reasonable cause to search the car? If it didn't quite meet the standards, a judge couldn't be aroused to issue a search warrant after being informed of the family's concern? They couldn't have assigned a squad car to tail her as she presumably had no legitimate excuse to why she was in the area? Presumably as soon as she crossed Facebook's corporate property she could have been questioned again and told she was trespassing on private property. Yet another failure by law enforcement after the red flags were woven by responsible and concerned citizens.
Aaron (King)
Its not a failure of law enforcement. its a failure of the ;legislature. the cops have no legal authority to take her gun away until she commits a felony. What you are asking for is authority that the NRA is directly opposed to and has lobbied very hard to stop.

If youtube corporate had not went after creators, taking away what small pennies on the dollar they were getting for creating new content, then none of this would have happened.

The "solution" offered? The same old stuff that has been offered and legislated into being for many, many years now --- more "gun control". We are all supposed to accept that just a little more restriction on the sane, will stop the violence of the insane. We are told that just another law, on top of the 20,000 or so already on the books, will "save lives". The result? More slaughter, without any great problem for homicidal/suicidal psychos to get a weapon.
AG (Adks, NY)
Does no one else notice the irony of a person who protested against killing animals and then decided to kill humans?
Minnie (Paris)
Hmm.... will this be labeled terrorism? Nasim Najafi Aghdam. Sounds foreign and Islamic. But she's a woman and she only had a hand gun. Maybe she was even an American citizen. Such a hard decision for trump.

Is it time to arm the IT department?

“...unimaginable tragedy...” What is wrong with people? These mass shootings happen almost every day. Why would they be “unimaginable “?
Roy G. Biv (california)
NO LOGIC The assailant was upset about Amazon limiting her website. So, she shot three people who had nothing to do with policy. Now, she has no website and no life.
michele tracey (Canyon Lake, CA)
That would be 'Menifee', and it is much closer to San Diego. Our thoughts and prayers go to her parents and siblings.
Jean (Cleary)
Does anyone actually care in the Congress or the White House. My hope for gun reform are the students who have been protesting. They will register and vote. Those in Congress who have continued to send "thoughts and prayers" do not realize that their "god" is not responding. Massacres seem to be happening at least once a week now Maybe their "gods"(the NAR) don't care. But the students and the many families sure do. Stop hiding behind the 2nd Amendment. Do universal background checks, ban assault weapons, ban bump stocks, and any other measure that will stop the violence. In other words do your job to protect the citizens who put you there And while we are discussing shootings how many Representatives, Senators , Cabinet members and Administration staff are invested in gun stocks?
Ilinzey (NEW YORK)
She obviously had mental health issues, and that is the only issue here, the gun will get all the blame and people with mental health issue will continue to do these acts until we wake up and fix the problem.

But they wouldn't be able to cause so much damage if they didn't have access to guns.
LongPurple (Earth, Solar System)
One need only consider the body counts in mass-murders that are NOT mass-shootings.  The combination of fuel oil and fertilizer in the Oklahoma City bombing, or fireworks and pressure-cookers at the Boston Marathon, or box-cutters and airplanes on 9/11, even the use of a truck to slaughter over 80 people in Nice, FR, is proof of the relative inefficiency of firearms for such mass-slaughter. But we will never see such an admission by the gun-hating Media.  Their target will always be guns.  It would be too callous for them to direct their attention to the human perpetrators of mass-murder.  They must restrict themselves to seeing only the tools of mass-SHOOTERS.

We have the choice of a "free society" with dangerous people removed from it, or a society governed by laws aimed at the lowest common denominator of morality and sanity ---- laws that are more suitable for the criminal inmates of a prison or the criminally insane inmates of an asylumn “Laws that criminalize conduct not wrong in itself [malum prohibitum] to prevent crime before it occurs make the behavior of criminals [or psychos] the measure of the rights and scope of liberty that the law will permit to the innocent. [e.g. 'Assault weapons [sic] are dangerous in the hands of criminals, therefore, no one shall have them']. Such laws tell the law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the lawless. That the law will permit the innocent to have only such rights and liberties as criminals will allow.” --- Jeff Snyder

She did a terrible thing, but I do feel some compassion for her as well. In the early stages of youtube people like her were able to launch their own business largely because of youtube, then google came along and closed avenues for people with less resources to make a living that way. Google is a terrible invasive cancer on our society a monopoly if there ever was one. Wrong way to go about it but the message is still relevant.
Craigoh (Burlingame, CA)
Perhaps YouTube needs to modify its’ policies to support small business entrepreneurs. But compassion for someone who shoots innocent people due to personal business problems? I don’t think so.
Ryan (CA)
Agreed, google and youtube's recent policy changes were 100% aimed at taking away the small revenue creators were getting for their own videos. Corporate YouTube officially has blood on their hands from their cost saving policies. Hope it was worth the few dollars you saved youtube!

This country has a gun problem that "thoughts and prayers" clearly can't stop. It's time to take action beyond thoughts and prayers. When???
Dennis Hinkamp (Logan UT)
The schools shootings, rightfully so, get everyone's attention while there is little outrage about the 1-3 person shootings and suicides that happen hundreds of times a week. We are a violent country with or without guns. Read about the recent case in Utah where an adult male stabbed two teenagers to death and threw them down a mine shaft.
LongPurple (Earth, Solar System)
Exactly. Guns are not the problem, violence is the problem. Nor is suicide only possible with a gun. Is it that Americans are so incompetent in suicide that they can't keep up with the suicide rates of other nations, even with the use of guns for that purpose? The USA, # 1 in gun ownership, is in 50th place worldwide, tied with Uruguay at 12.1 suicides per 100,000. That is far behind "gun free" South Korea with the second highest suicide rate in the world ----- 28.9 / 100,000, even though South Korea is 148th in the world in gun ownership with 1.1 guns per 100 people. If you prefer to look at a European Culture for comparison, it is interesting to note that while Lithuania has the lowest rate of gun ownership in Europe, 0.7 per 100 people,( little more than 64% the gun ownership rate of South Korea) it still manages to somehow attain the 4th highest suicide rate in the entire world, 28.2 per 100,000. The highest rate of suicide (44.2 / 100,000) is in Guyana, where there are apparently not enough guns to go around, and the prevalent suicide method is poisoning with insecticides.
Aaron (King)
Suicide by gun is the most common form of suicide in the USA. Suicides of kids is higher i the USA than almost anywhere else. Kids who can't find a gun don't commit suicide. Kids who do find a gun when they are thinking of suicide succeed. https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR2088.html http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/10/gun-waiting-periods-could-save-hu... https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1047279714001471
LongPurple (Earth, Solar System)
As is self-poisoning by insecticide in Guyana. There is plenty of it available, just as there are plenty of guns available in the U S A. IIRC, hanging and jumping from high places is also common there, as in Lithuania where there aren't many guns. The means is far secondary to the motive.

If you really want to understand Silicon Valley, Zach, a 37 year old, 37!, grabbed his “motorized skateboard “ to escape.
SDC (Princeton, NJ)
Zach, a gainfully employed adult, chooses to commute on a motorized skateboard. Would a bicycle be more acceptable to you, or must all adults drive cars.

In the past few days, numerous people have died in shootings of multiple people at one time. 3 dead in Kansas City, Ks; 3 dead in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Yesterday in Harris County, TX, 1 man died and 3 injured in a shooting. Why were THESE deaths not front page national news? Because they weren't white and middle class. Thank you NYT for keeping the status quo going, by only reporting crimes that affect wealthy and white America.
Jerry Probably (OKC, OK)
BAN AR-15s!!
LauraGreenImp (Nashville )
Even though the weapon used in this particular senseless shooting was not one, keeping weapons of war from being sold to civilians would be a good way to begin addressing our nation’s gun problems. And when I write “gun problems”, I really mean *human slaughter problems*.
LongPurple (Earth, Solar System)
Latest reports were that a "handgun" was the weapon used by the perp. If you're from Oklahoma City, I would expect you to be demanding the banning of lawn fertilizer, fuel oil, and rental trucks, triggered by this incident.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
The scariest thing about this shooting is that the White House will probably want to have certain trained You Tube employees carrying guns when they go to work.
GWE (Ny)
Does Donald Trump and his merrry band of traitors not realiw their progeny have to live in this society? We all swim in the same sea!

A woman with a grudge and a semi-automatic handgun, which you can learn how to shoot on youtube. What could possibly go wrong in America?
James Hoffa (Venus)
"A semi-automatic handgun"... just that statement alone tells me you know nothing about guns. Other than a revolver, all handguns are "semi-automatic". They're no more difficult to "learn to shoot" than a revolver, so no need for a YouTube video, unless your mentally incapacitated. And, by the way, a revolver speed loader will refill a revolver's cylinder just about as fast as a semi-automatic pistol can be with a magazine. The problem isn't guns. That woman could have done just as much damage with a car. This is about mental health, not making sure people can't come up with weapons to do damage to others.
James Hoffa (Venus)
Gun control... against handguns. Now we're really seeing the underbelly of this growing addiction to violence. May states have shuttered mental health care facilities... yes, even "progressive states" in the Northeast. Now the problem is coming home to roost. This nation needs to consider healthcare, including mental healthcare, as a human right, and not just as some socialist experiment. With access to universal healthcare, not only do people with chronic conditions get vastly cheaper, preventative treatment and maintenance care, but people with mental health issues have an avenue other than a meltdown. It's time we stop ignoring the real issue in this country.
Eatoin Shrdlu (Somewhere, Long Island)
Unfortunately, access to preventive mental health care won’t solve the problem. Handguns are, in almost all instances, useless for self-protection or the protection of others. But they cause most of (balanced statistically) the murders committed against lovers-former lovers, friends-former friends, business relations-former; suicides, accidental deaths especially by those who belong at the gun owner’s home, especially children , young children , who can’t understand guns, consequences, or handling rage So is murder by cop. Excited, frightenedand skin color/age profiling police seem to resort to shooting unarmed people too often. They should be armored not armed and use cars or helicopters chasing suspects - especially when only money or a car window’s been lost. Lives can’t be replaced. Listen to the body mikes out-of-breath cops running down a vandal. (huff, huff, huff signs of adrenal and lactic acid rush) close-range shots and cops yelling at victim “you stupid (hateful words)” - already blaming the person shot for his murder not even trying to save their victim . They can get away with it even if they shoot someone, surrounded at a distance, carrying, not pointing, a knife. Wait ‘em out? Supreme Court says kill ‘em. Lock the guns in a glovebox that a ranking officer can calmly radio open from a desk while listening and watching. That’s why cops drive cars and have radios in the first place.

That is the most outlandish recommendation I've heard since "Donna the Deer Lady" wanted the "Deer X-ing" signs taken off the busy interstates, and re-located to the back roads, with less traffic and lower speeds.

How long until the Terrorist word is used ??? After all, check her name. Not the usual " crazy " white male. At least no one else died, yet.
Abhijit (NYC)
My guess is any minute now.

I am sick and tired of those who think violence can solve problems. The USA has become a highly stressful and stressed society. Add to that the free availability of arms, the situation is incendiary. People can go off the deep end suddenly and do impulsive and violent things. We can't always spot them ahead of time. Many of them may not have a history of mental illness or a previous police record and may have even been model citizens. That's why we need gun control. The country is awash in folks lost, poor, unemployed and hopeless and also awash in guns. It is an incendiary mix and the Molotov Cocktail needs just a tiny spark. We need non violence conflict resolution classes in schools. We need a commitment to an education in non violence starting from elementary school through high school.

If the solution to school shootings is arming the teachers, then the one here is for EVERYONE to be armed. That sells a lot of guns but it makes shootings a lot more frequent and terrifies the entire population. The more obvious answer is to eliminate the guns. Obvious, that is, unless you're owned by the NRA and have already decided that's not an option.
GWE (Ny)
As a Venezuelan whonsaw what happened when everyone was armed, I can answer that for you. Things deteriorate into chaos and the murder rate sky rockets. I already think that cops are on edge which is why so many shootings, though in fairness I’m not sure if the statistics support that as I’ve not looked it up. Just a hunch.
Wayne (Brooklyn, New York)
Well you're not going to see an end to gun violence anytime soon because most of these guns were bought legally. For some reason the police have not reported if the gun was bought legally but most likely it was. Yesterday when I heard thsi happened at YouTube I thought right away this could be a disgruntled vlogger due to the changes YouTube has made in its monetization policy that has been costing a lot of small artists a lot of revenue. It was bad enough that last year some advertisers had pulled their ads due to fear of their products being associated with hate videos and other anti-social videos. But then YouTube decided to raise the requirement for the amount of subscribers a channel must have to even qualify for monetization along with numerical number of views. But after hearing it was a woman shooter I thought maybe it was not an angry vlogger but someone who was in a domestic dispute with the shooter being the most critical victim had been reported to be a man. So we have entered a new era where women are now entering and shooting up workplaces.
Journeywoman (USA)
Just. One. Woman. Let’s wait and see if other women follow before declaring a new era. There is so much exaggeration in reporting and discussing news events. Let’s all do our part to avoid relaying versions of news that ARE fake. So far, just one woman.
Entera (Santa Barbara)
One woman is statistically irrelevant when you look at the growing number of mass shootings in America. A mass shooting is one in which four or more people are injured or killed. They happen DAILY in the US.
SDC (Princeton, NJ)
They probably haven't had a chance to determine the provenance of the gun yet. But she probably bought it legally and recently.
GWE (Ny)
It's being reported elsewhere that both her brother and father contacted the authorities ahead of time. That says to me that she was likely mentally ill and should not have had access to any sort of a weapon. In a humane society, the police officers who observed her sleeping in her car and had an inkling that she might be violent, might have taken her in for the night to a hospital or somewhere else for observation. The call from her family coupled with the conditions of where they found her should have triggered more than just a knock on the car window. ......and as for Donald Trump's THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. My thoughts are that I pray the GOP gets resignedly beaten in 2018 and beyond. I am so fed up.
GWE (Ny)
"resoundingly" not resignedly. I hate auto correct!!!!!
Bill (Dobbs Ferry, NY)
Yep, I'm fed up too! With Trump and all the gun violence.
Usha Srinivasan (Maryland)
I loathe auto correct too. It tried to make loath love. Only kidding.
