Most (affluent) Aucklanders I know spend their working weeks plotting how to get of Auckland for the weekend. Many/most do boats.

Spent a fair amount of time in (amazing) NZ three years ago, ending up in Auckland. Ortolana was AMAZING, we went there three times -- just because. Also, a day trip via the ferry to Waiheke for the vineyards and olive oil was a real treat. We caught an oddly entertaining revue-type show, but had less luck at the Art Gallery, which seemed not to have a permanent collection and exhibit rooms were closed down. (Odd.) The neighborhood(s) around the university were fun and lively. We can't wait to go back to NZ, and revisit Auckland for a second time (and get to Christchurch for our first).

My wife and I loved New Zealand and plan to go back there. Auckland is certainly a beautiful and lovable city and deserves to be seen once more and more. However, no one should plan a visit to New Zealand to stay just in Auckland, since it is so far away from everywhere - flight costs to go there are high! - and all the land in north and south islands has so much to be seen and enjoyed.

A missed opportunity here on the photos for this article. Just about every photo looked like it could have been taken in many other places.

I spent quite a bit of time in Auckland in 1969. What a difference nearly 50 years makes. Back then, the sidewalks were literally rolled up by 10 pm during the week and on Sunday's you could forget about finding anything open. Still the city had a certain quaintness to it in a land that time forgot sort of way. My sense after reading this article is that I would have trouble recognizing this new Auckland! Progress?

The NZ dollar is about 70 cents US. Watching (from up top) people bungee-jumping (sort of) off the Sky Tower is both jarring and mesmerizing. Not sure one can really do all that is suggested here without undue rushing, given distances and other factors, but it's a good list. (We were just there.)

1 in 4 residents owns a boat? No way that is correct, please check your research. Maybe 1 in 40? Otherwise not a bad article, thanks. Wish there was room to put in all of the best food and coffee options, but obviously you have to just pick a few!

1 in four own a boat and 1 in four are living in a car or garage. :o Love the city but there's some real disparities - as with most big cities but woohoo apparent there.

A timely guide for the likes of Peter Thiel, also on today's page, planning their very own NZ boltholes after they're through destroying American comity. https://techcrunch.com/2017/01/26/peter-thiel-new-zealand-citizen/

I lived for a decade in New Zealand and can tell you Auckland is really just where the international airport is! I cannot imagine wasting any of my travel days in Auckland (nor can any NZer who lives outside of Auckland!). New Zealand is where you want to trek, not city-hop. If you want to know the land and people of Aotearoa go to its smallest of places, go to its wilderness, visit a marae (if you’ve been invited). Avoid the cities! It’s absolutely remarkable and thank goodness far, far away from the rest of this crazy world.

New Zealand is on my bucket list, but I will not be flying that far to wander around a city, shop or sit at someone's table.

When visiting Auckland dress in layers: the weather changes from balmy to downright cold in minutes! Rain can begin at any time, and then suddenly the sun shines!
