What Do You Collect?

I’m not sure I’m a collector. I’m kind of a paradox. I want the ability to travel and am really working on being a conscious consumer. I don’t want to actively support abuse by buying from corporations anymore. I am a dorky girl who likes plants. I am a magpie of sorts. I collect candy wrappers and things like that. I take a strange liking to things you can find in a Party City. Currently I’m collecting ghost patches and pins for my ghost sweater.

The part the resonated with me was how she didn't collect the most valuable on or the most beautiful one she collected the on she that was the best in he opinion. I think people collect old postcards because there are so many and they are worth money, other people collect cards, stamps, video games, Pops. I do have a collection of Yugioh cards that I have had for most of my life. I think clubs like that exist show they can show off to other people what they have. Collections say what they are into and what they have the biggest interest in

I’m not much of a collector now, but I used to always collect pens. It never really mattered what type they were, ballpoint, gel, fountain, I would just like the look of them messily arranged in a box or a container. My dad would always go to these exhibitions, and I would always ask him to get pens for me. After all, they were free. He would bring back pens from different companies and I would just shove them in some container or pile then on my desk if I ran out of room. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t a smart idea because I have too many now, but it was just something fun to do.

I collect W’s and nutcrackers. I started collecting nutcrackers when I was about 5. It’s kind of cool because they all look different. My grandparents mostly give me the nutcrackers, and whenever I see them, I think of them.

I have gone to places and I have seen things, I mean like old pictures, cars, newspapers over 100 years that doesn’t mean that I am a postcard collector, my aunt I know like keeping and even buying old newspaper, jewelries. Like people say it is a hobby You see buying postcards is not just a fun thing to do but historical remembrance seeing things older than you are is a very good history, and what I like in this postcard stuff is that people buy a particular postcard like George Bauer likes maps, flags and postal history and Lenore Weber likes face tattoo, body adornment mined you thus is not a real picture. Therefore, I think if you give me, the chance to get some postcard I will proudly get some cause I think is fun to keep old postcard.

To my mind, hobbies and interests that is what each person consists of. Collecting of something is the most widened kind of hobby. People collect different figurines, coins, paper money, books, stamps and of course postcards. Almost every person has experience of collecting in some life period. And I am not the exception. Being a child, as all my friends, I have been collecting bubble-gum wrappers. I can tell you more: ALL my friends have been collecting wrappers those days. They were kind of Pokémon cards of 20 century. Nowadays I can not say that really liked it, but to be on top of the widespread children’s movement was too important. The next was collecting magnets from different places, countries, which I have visited ever. All magnets were placed on freezer’s front door in my kitchen. In a couple years there had been so great amount of magnets, that they started to fall down. Every time magnet was broken my heart was broken as well. And after my such “heart-breakings” had become more and more frequent, I understood that pleasure of viewing them was weaker then sadness of losing, so I made a decision. One beautiful sunny day I took all of my colorful and viewing magnets and put them into garbage bin. That was the last day for collecting of material items…but not the collecting at all. I have started collecting emotions and impressions, but it is a completely different story.

Postcards were first print in the 19th century. Postcards collecting is the most popular hobby all over the world. I may not be a postcard collector but I like it. I think some people are draw to collect old postcards because postcards are like a time machine into the past and older postcards are quite valuable. Whether it is fashion, technology or race relations, you can go visit in past. Most people collect postcards out of nostalgia to reminisce about a certain time or a certain place. Historians use them to interpret the history of a town or place, and some genealogists use them to help document family history. I personally have a collection of coins from different countries and storybooks. I think clubs made up by collector because they have the same thing common also, those people like to collect post cards they made a club named Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City. If I had a chance, I would like to join a club where the members share an interest in the same thing I collect. Those people who collect postcard who are call Deltiologists. Some deltiologist likes to collect historical postcards; some of them like to collect old postcards. Those postcards collection tell us about the people nature and what they are interested.

Postcards collections is a famous creativity in all over the world. All people used to collect post cards. It is a kind of hobby or interest. People used to collects books, postcards, coins etc. It gives pleasure .People are happy to collecting various things that they find unique or historical. I also personally consider myself as a collector. I collect coins from various counties also, I collect some storybooks. People who collect postcard they are just holding our old historical culture by the cards. They are dawn to collect postcard so they can save old historical events or things. I am also collecting coins. I also get pleasure to having that. Yes, I of course think that clubs made up ones great collector. In my country, I belong to a member of a collecting club. Our club name is Collectors Club. I wanted to be a club member because club members are all working together and they are always gather something new. Those are collecting things it also, an easy way to know about the person mind .We can realize that if someone collects flowers that person must be likes colors. Thus, an easy way to recognize someone mind.

Today, I have read an interesting article in the New York Times. I really admire those people who shared their thoughts through their collection. Different kinds of people collect post cards, because they are very passionate. While they are living their passion, they are more in contact with the nature, for example Marilyn Stern who collected a baby panda in the 1948. Most of the people who are collecting are from different country .The deltiology will not exist if people all over the world do not collect postcards. They are helpful historical memories. If someone needs to have acknowledge of the past, he can use the postcards as his reference. Like those passionate of postcards, I used to collect old bills from my country. It was very exciting, the most interesting in my collection is the older the bill is the more money you will have in exchange. Even though I have friends who tell to sell them, I do not want to exchange those bills, they are priceless for me, and I spare them to show to my kids and my grandkids. It will be a way for me to teach them about my native country.

Collecting stuff is very interesting that can fill into our life with enjoying. Firstly, some people love the certain object and collecting them as their hobbies. Secondly, they start sharing their collection with others who also have the same interest. Finally, like the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City in which has formed a group that would be fun for any collector. Collecting stuff is very meaningful and valuable. The members of the Metropolitan Postcard Club seek postcard in which they want for the collection and know more about relating to postcard. Their collection can record and keep many interesting things. I also once collected tickets for sightseeing and commemorative coin in my country. Sometime I took out them and enjoyed the wonderful time .I think it can help keeping my mind and remember those which can make me happy.

To collect things it has to be something that you love. It has to be a passion. I like colorful things. When I was younger, I used to collect seashells from the sea every time I went to the beach I had different kind of seashells. Every time I looked at them they made me remember great time I had when I used to go there. I did not really get a lot of them. I think it is something good for people to collect things. It is interesting when you are comparing with someone who collects things so you can discuss with them about what you have collected. Some people like to collect something from everywhere they go as a memory some people like to collect ancient documents. I also use to collect greeting cards from friends. Some people go to other places collect historical things moment to share an idea of where they went with family and friends.

I am not really collector but I collect many things that remember me my ex boyfriends like cards, letters, poems, teddy bears and others gifts. I started to collect when I was 16 years old. When I see my collection, I remember the time when I loved that person and how he loves me. It is has sentimental and nostalgic value for me. The same thing happens with Marilyn Stern, she collect postcard of a baby panda from 1984. I think she loves collecting postcards that represent some value for her live. However my kid collect rocks and when we go to the park, he spend time looking for new shapes of rocks for his collection. He keeps his rocks in different boxes, separate for colors. I felt exciting when I see him collecting his rocks because I know that it is a good hobby. At home, we try to help him with his collection. I told him that in the future he could belong to enjoy in a club with the same interest like the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City

We can see the collections as something old fashioned, but at this moment; we are rescuing the customs that we had many years ago. This article is very interesting for me, because I like to collect jewelry, and my son now is collecting cards of Pokémon and for him it is something serious. That is why I feel connected to the topic of the article. However, it is still a bit strange, especially some postcards that I never imagined that people love to collect. I think if the club President Mr. Kennedy published three books of history postcard before he open the club, he found the reason and important things of this club and when He open space in Facebook, he is talking about this idea, everybody who likes to collect postcard wants to start almost immediately. They are members of this wonderful club, they felt happy and the club has more than 200 current members. Mr. George Gibbs a dealer had brought around 30 thousand postcards. According to the article, the goal for the people, who like postcard collecting? They can share each other, or they want to keep attention, to other people and this is the way they feel important, this is the opportunity to show to others their qualities or something in which they make good. The people who visit to the club, they can find something interesting, different, and funny. Other people who likes exaggerating things or dirty things or something simple.

Collecting things have been a thing that many species of living things have done for centuries. Some people collect postcards, some polaroids, some shoes. I think people collect things in life because they might feel comforted or proud surrounded by something they've worked on for a while. Yes I do collect things. I love to collect crystals and stones. They are just very beautiful and I feel calm and relaxed around them. I love like collecting candles and vintage items. I love the smell and the nostalgic feeling of being surrounded by vintages things. Some people don’t collect things because they might feel like things around them might stress them out or maybe the simply just live a minimalist lifestyle. Basically my opinion on collecting this is that collecting could be a healthy thing for your mind as you can feel happy around things you like.

When I was young, baseball card collection was my passion. I still have a complete set from 1987 in my attic.

I think some people like to draw collected to old postcard, because first they loves it so much and they realize to I can collect postcard or anything I love it so much. Therefore, people are starting to collect anything. That is not coming one day that needs too many years. When I read an article many people collected many things especially they called old real photo, superlatives. I believe postcard collection are great but I do not have any postcard or like that. When I was young, I always tried to collects old money and old coin. However, I did not collect too long because I did not find any old money or coin that is why I did not continue my collection .But I have few real photo in family and my pictures, when I was born to now. My mother collected all thing for me. She collected my every movement. However, I would like to collect mobile phone.

The first time I came to the United States at the age of 9 years old. I felt amazed by the 25¢ coins (Quarters) because they were completely different from what I knew of coins. Back in my country all coins where the same. They were uniform with no variety. When I first purchase in a store and got my change I noticed that my two quarters were different from each other .They have different image carve in the coin follow by a different state name of the fifty that forms the USA. I just had acknowledged not every coin was the same. It were different since that day I start collecting the quarters from every state and date. I get to collect more than 70 coins, I was very proud of my collection. Eventually me and my family went back to our native country and I lost my collection , since then I haven’t collect anything else. Back then, I use to do it just for fun and curiosity. I did not thought of it as something remarkable or important. This article makes me think of collections like postcards or my old coins collection as an important thing. Like little pieces of history from a long or a close past with some histories behind it. I feel connected with the passion people have to collect. No matter what they collect and also see the important of their work, often people see them as just bore and weird people but how we all should really see them is as the people who saves little pieces of the human history that nobody else cares to save.

This article was interesting because I read about the different things some people were collecting. In addition, many people collect many things that I never imagine they can do. I heard about people that collected cups, glasses, coins, stamps, and signatures of famous people, mini cars and more. Collecting is not my personality. However, I could collect something, for example, my daughter’s pictures and handmade activities at school and my daughter’s Halloween costume. I think the clubs are important activity, because we can go there and learn about all things that they have been collected.

To start I would like to talk about the first question, in my personal opinion this article is not the coup of my tea, why do is said that? Because I think that collectors are people who is just looking a way to spend their time, so if I do not have anything to do I will prefer travel for example, I like to be outside, enjoy the nature. I like the theater, I prefer to have more joy in my life rather than be sitting at home. I believe that this people who collect post cards also is people who has a lot free time, and is a way that they found to spend their time and entertainment them self, no just post cards at all also known that people collect many different items as toys, coins, antiques and others. When I was a child, I can say that I was a little collector. I remember to had TAZOS, they are a little circular disks with pictures on it, they had different images on it and they used to be for play games, which were coming from packets of chips, I also collected coins from different country’s bud as long that I started growing I forget about all this stuff, I just keep my life busy and I did not dedicate more time on that. Personally, I do not have any collection of anything, also for now any plan to collect anything.
Astrid4D (YC CLIP)
This article was interested but I do not have many things in common because I do not collect anything. However, I take pictures with a Polaroid camera so we have the same style of vintage pictures. The reason is that I like to have the instant pictures of special moments with friends or family, saved it in an album in the real life and not just digital. I think these people collect postcards because they are usually old and this bring memories to them and that can become in a good feeling and if that is the case, they can also collect vinyl’s or more things like vintage style. How I said above I do not collect anything but I would like to collect pencils because I like to write and mark with different colors. If I collect this, I think I would not like to be in a group about it because I possibly I take this as a personal taste. However, I can understand why people join these groups; they have similar tastes and share their experiences about how they reach their stuff, also they can switch postcard or anything they are collecting. In addition, the most important reason to join these groups I think is that they are alike. They have tastes in common and this can talk for them and about them, is a good way to communicate with each other because it is a part of you.

In the article, “What Do You Collect” by Sannon Doyne published in New York Times Jan 29, 2018. I can analyze that exist too many people who have as a hobby to collect postcard. These cards can cost to 1 dollar to hundreds of dollars. It has many categories like comedy, geography or art, etc. The postcard can be interesting in the mood that they have a story back to them. To collect them is make the person to bring the past to the present. Something that is resonate me. It is the experiences with the postcard. It has can be many things like the draws on the cards or the stories that they have in the back (dedications). When I was a child, I received a gift from my sister. It was my first coins from others countries. Immediately the different forms and colors of the coins attracted me. These things have a story and a date that is so interesting to know because is a kind of curiosity that they are still today. The people collect different things because when they see this, they got memories that they had in the moment. An example of this is my sister. When she travel, she takes pictures about the moments that she lives and later she just prints these pictures in form of postcard. When she see these pictures, his memories are getting back and her feelings. In conclusion, to collect postcard is a funny form to express our feelings for something it can be in good or bad form.

Unfortunately, this article doesn`t resonate with me because I don`t have a hobby to collect some things. For some people it`s a great hobby and they do it the whole life. I think people like to collect something because it connects them with history of own memories. I also aware of other types of collecting things such as: old cars, butterflies, and antique statues. Personally, I do not have my own collection of something. Apparently, I just do not have enough time and patience to collect something unusual or rare. Sometimes, I think about things that I would collect and it would be music instruments from each country in the world. Therefore, I would sacrifice my money and time of trying to collect them. The reason why clubs exist is to share something with all fans of that. I would like to join at the club with my interest about musical instruments from the rest of the world because I can meet people who are interested in this like me and we could talk about it hours by hours, and to show what we collect, as well. Collections can say many things about people who amasses them. For instance, if somebody collects post cards it means that they are calm persons because it takes many patience to collect a different type of cards. All collectors who collects are interesting people because they try to know something new and meet people with the same hobby.

In the article ‘’What Do You Collect’’ By Shannon Doyne published on January 29, 2018 talks about postcards collectors it was interesting to read that and I’m not a postcard collector but I like to save anything that someone gives to me, I got a box and in which I put many letters, objects that I receive I like to do that because I used to appreciate the reason why that person gave to me that object, and because I can remember that person with love for me the details, although it could be small or big for me it’s important and have a high value. I would like to collect pictures of things that I love and make an album and show it to many people close to me and that they could read a little poem made for me and that they could see, why I love taking pictures and the reason why I took that photo. I think that the people who collects things are interesting because each thing have a meaning for that person they can explain thing that we cannot understand a simple view. I would like to meet people who collects postcards and that all for them explain to me all the meaning that could be interesting to heard.

This article “Postcard People” by Annie Correal talks about a club made up of postcard collectors, why are they collecting these postcards?, and what is the meaning to collect them. There are people who are collecting postcards now, and each of them reasons has why did they start collecting. A man is collecting only in Japan and Japanese because he became interested in japan. Actually, in japan there are culture of postcards still now so I think he can collect them easily. A woman is collecting postcards which are painted tattooing because she is interested in tattooing, body adornment, especially facial adornment. As you read the article there are many kinds of deltiologists that are joining in this club and some people are collecting just for hobby, some people are not only collecting but also selling and paint postcards as an artist. Some postcards are cheap but some postcards are very expensive like hundred dollars. I do not collect anything but I want to collect something like the member of the club, because collecting is on of the best way to record histories, especially postcards. I hope this club will grow up and keep spreading enjoyment of collecting.
Jessica (fl)
I wouldn’t say that I am a collector, I honestly can’t say that I’ve ever personally collected things for myself. I do however have a collection of stuffed bears given to me by my grandmother. I have about 50 bears, one for each state, and they all have a coin on the bottom of their foot. These bears that I own rest well above me on shelves near my ceiling, they’re also in these plastic container things as if they are on display. Although this collection is technically mine because I own it, it is still not something that I collected myself therefore I would not consider myself a collector. My uncle though, is in fact a collector. My uncle collects crosses every time he goes somewhere to visit or is out somewhere with friends or family. He makes sure to buy a cross at a nearby shop he passes and then signs it with the date, location, and the people he was with at the time. In my opinion, these crosses are a very good representation of the kind of person that my uncle is. Firstly, and most obviously, they show that he is a religious person, but they also show that he really values his time spent with others and wants to cherish the memory of being with them (this he does with the cross). Although I don’t collect anything, I think I would like to start a collection, a collection of something that has meaning to me and helps express who I am as a person.
Emily Sause (Wilmington, NC)
I guess that my inability to throw things away makes me a collector. Pictures, trophies, books, clothes, etc. thrown in boxes to find in a year or two. The most collected items I own are those that are attached to a memory. I suppose collecting could be a hobby, but it’s not a hobby of mine. I don’t go out of my way to find things to collect. My aunt collects sea shells and will spend hours at the beach just to find new shells for her collection.
John Burgee (Wilmington, NC)
I personally wouldn't consider myself a collector due to the low maintenance I require, meaning that I really only need one copy of everything I own and that I'm easy to please. I don't need 10 pairs of shoes, I only need like 3 that I'll actually use during an average week. Although, I do still recognize gathering and collecting different items as a hobby. In the article, Marilyn Stern collected postcards that had sentimental value to her. They also gave had somewhat of a nostalgic value to her, in that she could remember the time she obtained the postcard. This is what makes sense for me, I can see why others might want a plethora of something instead of just one. If I had to start a collection of something It would be something like lacrosse equipment or sticks because I would be able to use them more than anything else I own.
Jackson Spiers (Wilmington, NC)
Although I have a multitude of video games, shoes, and baseball cards, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a collector. Over the years I've built up lots of things just from being around and living life. But being a real collector to me is someone who really tries to get lots of one thing and stash it away in a safe or case or something like that, not by accident. So no, I'm not a collector but being one seems like a fun hobby and I will definitely give it a shot and see if I can find something new that I love.
Renee Joynes (Wilmington NC)
I’ve never been the type of person to be a collector. Sure when I was young I ‘collected’ keychains, but let's be real how many did I actually end up getting like maybe 10 and that idea was only because my sister collected them. Needless to say that collection didn’t last long. Then there's my mom who collects quarters one from each state for all of her kids. So I thought hey let’s give that a try, didn’t last long either I think the thought of money just sitting there was too hard to resist. If I come across an item in my future that I start collecting it would be great to be able to look back and remember all the great memories associated with those items. Collecting can be a stress reliever or very personal but either way there’s no wrong way to collect so might as well give it a try.
Jen Nguyen (Wilmington NC)
Together, my family collects mugs from different places we’ve been to. We tend to travel a lot, with or without each other and we like to collect the mugs as reminders as to where we’ve been and what we’ve experienced. It’s always exciting when someone comes back from a place for a long time and gets to place the new mug in the cupboard and tell stories about it at the dinner table. For instance, this summer I went to a camp in a different state and I got to put my own mug in the cupboard for the first time. Getting to tell my family about the exciting things I experienced alone was exhilarating because it was something I’ve been looking forward to for a while. We collect mugs to remember where we’ve been, but we also use it as a bonding agent, to keep us close when distance and time keep us far apart.
Meghan Miraglia (Massachusetts)
People collect because people are lovers of the Tangible. We like to hold moments in our palms like pearls. We hold them up to the light and marvel at them and cling to them because they are atoms, and atoms make us feel safer. It is the Intangible that frightens many. Why else do you think people fear the dark, or death? It’s because you cannot see it. You cannot reach out and touch death, and you cannot reach out and touch the dark. I don’t collect, but I do write. I keep journals, four or five of them, because I like knowing that all of the Intangible can be collected and stuffed and housed into the Tangible. That’s why I think people collect postcards - they cannot hold falling in love, they cannot hold epiphanies, they cannot hold joy, so they scribble on the back of a postcard all of the things that they loved and realized and dreamed, and they slide a couple of quarters over to the cashier, and for a few cents, they can keep the moments that made their heart swell. Some people might find that a bit materialistic, but frankly, I think it’s true. Collections speak volumes about the people who collect them, though I don’t think it’s very apparent or especially obvious as to what exactly it says about them.
Lola Byers-Ogle (Wilmington Nc)
I would definitely consider myself a collector. However, unlike the article, I don’t collect a specific set of items. Instead, I collect things based on association. For example, a candle that’s smell reminds me of someone I love, or a flower that reminds me of the scenery of a place I’ve been. If I had to collect a specific type of item I would collect postcards of places I’ve been, since I love to travel. I think people collect old postcards because it helps them remember, just like why I collect things. I understand why the collection club exists, so people with similar interests can group together, however, I doubt I would join one, just because collecting isn’t a huge passion of mine.
Grant Holland (Wilmington NC)
I do have collections that I have earned from the past years of my life. In fact some of the collections that I have saved, started even before I was born! My grandparents started a coin collection back in 1999 saving every quarter from each state and placed it into a coin collection book. My grandparents were not able to finish the collection, so I decided to finish it. Now I have a coin collection of every state dating back to a Delaware coin made in 1787 to the final coin made in Hawaii in 1959. Now, I may not have an exotic collection, but it is a collection that has a valuable meaning behind it. Every time I look at the collection it reminds me of my grandparents. Collections show what the collector truly value, for example Marilyn Stern may have a collection of a baby panda because she values animals. Like I have a coin collection because I can relate it to special memories.
Bronwyn Williams : (Wilmington, NC)
This wasn't intentional, really, it wasn't. Naturally, however, if you really like something you're going to want more of it, right? What am I talking about? Video games. I've been obsessed with the things since I was a little kid in pre-school. I remember my first Nintendo DS, it was a cute pastel pink and I loved it until it couldn't handle all the Hershey's Kisses wrappers I shoved into the cartridge slot so my family wouldn't know that I ate all that candy in one night. Back on track, just looking to my left I realize that I might have a problem. Stacks of games upon games, most of which I don't even have the time to beat or replay (I would kill for an hour alone with Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask), and yet I want more. As soon as I hear about the next new release, I want it so bad. I heard about the new Xenoblade and I wanted it but I wasn't even a third of the way through the first Chronicles. And that's how they stack up. I never thought of it as a collection up until now and it's a weird way to think about it, but what is it if not a collection? Collectors themselves kinda freak me out. Like, don't get me wrong, they're not malicious, but as much as I love video games, I would definitely never shell out upwards of $26,000 for an authentic 1990 Nintendo World Championship cartridge. If it makes you happy though and you don't neglect your health in favour of obsession, go for it!
Rosser Baxley (Wilmington, NC)
I may not be a postcard collector myself but one thing that is for sure is that i love vinyl records. When I buy vinyl I don’t buy online. There is nothing like feeling the record and looking at the art within, it’s beautiful. I personally believe that postcards are a little odd but I would see where some who loves art and travel would be in love with it. Postcards encapsulate the best of what a place has to offer and that is a cool thing. Vinyl is expensive but I wanted to get into it somehow. I guess you could say that I cheated; but here’s how I acquired around 300 records. My great aunts son died and he left behind precious records like sly and the family stone, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers Band, and the Grateful Dead. I love the idea of collectors clubs it is cool to see others people hobbies. I also enjoy seeing what brings people happiness. I would certainly join a vinyl record club because I would love to see if someone has similar music tastes as me. My Aunt and Uncle have a collection of vinyl of their own and they are in awe of Mac Demarco because of his beautiful obscurity.

Yes I have a collection of posters and just little things that I get when I go to Duke University. Whenever I go to sports games there or even just to drive up there to my favorite college ever, I always bring back something. When I went to a Duke women's lacrosse game, I collected and came home with a Duke lacrosse poster, booklet, keychain, and socks! Then when I went to a Duke football game I collected a Duke football poster, a sticker, and another keychain! And then when I went to a Duke basketball game and another Duke football game, I collected even more things! Right now all the posters are hanging up on my wall in my room, which makes it the best wall in the world. ll my other little things that I got at Duke are all on a dresser right underneath the posters on the wall. i really like collecting those sort of things because number one, it's my team and I love it so much, and number two, it makes memories. Every poster on m wall and item on my dresser has an amazing story behind it. I love waking up in the morning and seeing my collection of things. I go to Duke a lot so about every three months the collection gets bigger and bigger. I am looking forward to collecting more things when I go to Duke University in the future!
Brooke (Wilmington )
The reason why I collect things is so I can remember. There are so many things that occur day to day and it can be hard to remember every little thing that has transpired in our lives. Collections allow people to reminisce past events or memories that are significant to them. They bring people back to the moments that shaped them. My most sentimental collection is definitely my postcard collection. Whenever I go to a new place I try to find a postcard from the area that I know will remind me of the moments and adventures that occurred. Every few months I’ll come across my box of postcards and I’ll dive into all of the memories. Feelings of joy and bliss rush through my mind every single time as I’m reminded of all the little wonderful moments. I think everyone should have a collection of some sort because they remind us of what was once important to us, conjuring a plethora of emotions that are unlike any others.

If I had to put a reason behind why I think people enjoying collecting things, I would automatically link it to their memories. Postcards in particular, show that this person likes to remember past places they have gone, and to go further into thought, they want to remember the memories acquired during their time in this certain location. Anther example would be rocks, there are two types of rock collectors: those who collect rocks from certain places, and those who collect types of rocks. The people who collect rocks from specific places are also those who want to hold onto memories. They can look back on a particular rock and think to themselves, "wow I got this rock from that one time I went to the Grand Canyon, how neat." In the end, some people who collect items tend to be people wanting to reminisce on memories in the past.

(part 2) I haven’t picked my dad’s brain about it, but maybe that’s why his face lights up when he finds an especially old and unique quarter or a book written in the 19th century about historic forts. Most importantly, at the core of collection is culture. Clubs made of collectors exist because they are on the search for culture.

(part 1) I don’t collect anything, yet, maybe it’s because I’m not passionate or fascinated by any one particular materialistic thing. Or maybe it’s because I don’t like the look of clutter (an image I’ve associated with collectors since watching American Pickers). I feel like collectors are attracted to certain collection items thanks to past memories.
