Trump Plans to Attend the World Economic Forum in Davos

“Davos” has become a byword for tyranny in the popular imagination, because totalitarianism—and perhaps this is Arendt nonsense—emerges when people cease to think of themselves as citizens of a nation-state (defined by its own laws and secure in its borders) but instead as members of a transnational group[ing] (racial, religious, economic, etc.) that is necessarily expansionist. Trump will set them straight.
T-cup (America)
I hope they laugh Trump off the stage when he says: "I'm here because I want to make America great" or "America First". Ha Ha Ha the rest of the World mocks these ignorant USAers.
gk (Santa Monica)
Is there a McDonald’s in Davos?
Donna (NYC)
No one should be surprised. All the White House means to Orange Tumor is more chances to make more $$$$ for himself and his cronies...
Dr. Mysterious (Pinole, CA)
I am attending a scientific convention in a place that shall remain nameless, because I am one. Donald J. Trump, in his private life, is among the people you correctly characterize as participants. Flash... You can't influence those you are not in contact with. Second Flash... They did not get to be what they are in an international vacuum. Third Flash... He is the president of the United States and by that criteria alone has a rather large stick and an enormous carrot to offer them.

Switzerland supplies the clock; we supply the cuckoo.
gigi (Oak Park, IL)
I see no mention of what Trump plans to do at Davos. Give a speech? Participate in panel discussions? Or just mingle and dine with the rich and famous? What will his role be?
Demosthenes (Chicago)
Is Trump a attending Davos to try to sell Trump water, Trump Steaks, and Trump Vodka to actual billionaires, or is he going to secretly meet with Russian oligarchs for a necessary cash infusion?
Paul (Europe)
Well he did attend the school as well.
Soroor (CA)
I think Trump is going there to advertise his Trump Hotel or other properties. And probably Ivanka will tag along to get some publicity for her business. There has to be some financial profit reason for his attendance.
JBC (Indianapolis)
"Some of Mr. Trump’s advisers were befuddled by his planned trip" Who? What level of advisor? With what responsibilities? Without this info this assertion is basically anonymous sourcing, something the NYT says it is trying to avoid.
njglea (Seattle)
I can just imagine what the wealthiest will say behind The Con Don's back. He's simply as dumb as a brick when it comes to anything but stealing wealth and dealing in corruption. Typical mafia - with no class.
Teresa (Chicago)
Three to six months after Davos, don't be surprised if the promise of better trade relations and an increase in jobs for Americans after "wonderful. Absolutely wonderful" talks includes a new Trump Golf resort somewhere.
WillyD (Little Ferry)
I can't wait for him to push another dignitary out of the way in order to get attention at some introduction ceremony. We're #1!
4Katydid (NC)
The past few days have felt like this administration has moved on from shooting the nation in the foot, to performing a slow motion murder of democracy.
Neil M (Texas)
Many are focused on suitability of POTUS to attend this event - from intellectual point of view. My bet is that this is a smokescreen for him to stop in London to inaugurate our new embassy. And he will of course then rub it in at this Swiss talk-a-thon. While this is not quite Nixon goes to China - but these elites who look down on POTUS - will be forced to listen to him for at least 40 plus minutes. It will be quite a show. I cannot wait.
Francoise Aline (Midwest)
Will the other participants have the good sense to boycott his speech?
Uzi (SC)
As usual, Trump's appearance in Davos will create a frisson among the global moneyed elite. He is a curiosity due to his tweeters and colorful personality. As far as Trump selling his economic view of America First, the results will not meet the White House expectations.Trump has abandoned the global stage and China is filling the gap. On trade and economic integration matters, China is now in the driving seat.
Word (Way Out West)
“I just made you a lot of money,” Trump told his wealthy Mira-Lago members after signing the tax bill that further enriched corporations and the wealthiest as it promises a deficit increase of 1.8 billion and preys on the middle class and the poor.
Robert (Seattle)
Trump's attendance is solely because Xi Jinping made a big splash in his appearance a year ago. And, ironically, the little man from Washington will be trying to retrieve some of the world leadership and prestige that he has tossed away in his election campaign and since winning the presidency. Davos isn't a nationalist convention. It's not an "America First" convention--nor a convention for any national leader whose myopic views isolate him or her from the world dialog. Davos's image problem is that it is a fake sounding board for a global consciousness to which the uber-wealthy don't subscribe--but if you attend, you've got to mouth the platitudes that they do. Trump's big point of envy will be that there's not a Trump property in Davos where he could charge asttronomical rates and rub shoulders with the fabulously wealthy. In this one, he'll just rub shoulders and sleep in somebody else's hotel bed. Don't expect America's badly damaged reputation to be revived.
common sense advocate (CT)
According to WEF, the Davos Forum theme, "'Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World'*, will make a case for renewed commitment to international collaboration as a way of solving critical global challenges." Never mind digging into the weeds to read the agenda, did Trump or Huckabee read the stated purpose of the meeting before announcing Trump's purpose is attending to spout America First?
Backbutton (CT)
The announcement was made to distract from the public spanking he just got from Fire & Fury. He is doing show and tell to prove the book wrong, and even trying to make nice on immigration. Now Trump will add another obsessive matter to his agenda, besides the inauguration crowds and undoing Obama.
daniel r potter (san jose california)
while recruiting next year's Trump U. class other world leaders will warn their subjects to stay away. if the man was not president he would not even have received an invitation. you go mr president' if you choose to stay, fine with me.
JuQuin (PA)
“Mr. Trump has also spent a lifetime as a real estate mogul and television personality seeking to be accepted by the financial and media elite in New York and around the world. His decision to travel to Davos as president may represent his desire to prove that he has achieved that goal.” If President Trump thought that the NYC elites were unfair to reject and continue to reject him, he will be sorely disappointed with the European Elites. I suppose his handlers have not told him what the European’s opinion of him is.
Guy Noir (NYC)
Davos is an event for the 1%. Trump will fit right in and do some shady deals for himself and family.
Mark Smith (Dallas)
...where Trump will, as always, be mocked, derided or outright ignored as a wanna-be titan who never was.
jazz one (Wisconsin)
That Fox & Trump shill, Maria Bartiromo (sp?) is a breathless, gushy Davos attendee. There's surely be at least one deeply embarrassing softball interview between her and DJT while there. Ugh.
SolarCat (Up Here)
"But the event — which often focuses on global economic issues — also will provide Mr. Trump with a platform to boast about the improving American economy, including the rise in the stock market and the low jobless rate". But the event --- won't be attended by ignorant troglodytes (other than him).
KM (SF, CA)
Trump wants to do go Davos because he has always wanted to be a part of that crowd. His supposed "populist" agenda is nothing more than empty words he tosses around to make his base of ignorant fools feel like he is one of them. In reality, he is a third rate, low class, shady businessman who has always lusted to be one of the elites. This is the only chance he will get to be "one of them", even if he had to get in via the back door (as President rather than as an elite businessman.) BTW, his love/hate affair with the international business elites is just another reflection of his deep insecurity. It is entirely analogous to his love/hate relationship with the elite press (NYT, WaPo). He hates the elite press because they think he is a loser, but he knows deep inside that they represent the pinnacle of the free press in the US and he DESPERATELY would like them to praise and legitimize him. Unfortunately for him, there is no back door to gaining their praise (short of subverting the entire enterprise, which he is trying to do.)
CF (Massachusetts)
Everybody knows the low jobless rate and soaring stock market are just momentum from the Obama years. He fools no one here, so he's going to peddle his fantasies abroad. Pretty hilarious. I used to hate it when he went abroad and embarrassed us. Now, I prefer it when he's out of the country. So much better when he spreads the misery elsewhere.
Keitr (USA)
How sad. He's only going now, because before these hoi-poloi would have refused him before. Trump is that creepy kid who lied all of the time and just wanted to be in with the in-crowd.
arp (Ann Arbor, MI)
Keiter, I think you meant "poi aristoi".
LK (Singapore)
Such a wannabe.... till now he was desperately seeking to be taken seriously by the billionaires, and to convince them he was one of them. Now he finally has a chance to show up and preen in front of them. They'll shake his hand and say nice things to his face, and laugh at him, and the US, behind his back...
Wolfcreek Farms (PA)
Yeah, I'll bet they're all thrilled he's planning on attending.
BlueHaven (Ann Arbor, MI)
Watching Sarah rationalize the utter shameless self-promoting by Donald is bad theater.
mike ahern (portland maine)
The story mentioned 400 panel discussions. Please publish the topics of such. I am sure they would be of some interest...
John (San Francisco, CA)
Donald J. Trump hasn't humiliated himself enough. Plus the Mercers and the other ultra-wealthy donors should see along with the rest of the world, just what they sold to the American public. Please Donald J. Trump go to Davos, if only to make the world miss Barack Hussein Obama and Bill Clinton. "Just do it!"
Glen (Texas)
Tone deaf. Willfully blind. Diplomatically inept and ignorant Impressive credentials.
Flayer (Cupertino, CA)
I'm happy Pres. Trump will attend. He will promote the USA, articulate our position in the world and make us proud. (Finally. we have a president we can be proud of!) He'll have an opportunity to explain to the many dunderheads and hypocrites why we are different from them, thank G-d. Those open border, globalists can just stuff it. I know that Pres. Trump presents a threat to their domination. They don't see it but they have been the problem. You go, Don!
Mary (Albuquerque, New Mexico)
Flayer: Trump and "articulate" in the same sentence? (The transitive verb "articulate" means "to express in coherent verbal form".) Trump "make us proud"? Not the majority of Americans nor most of the rest of the world.
tom boise (California)
Trump is going to Davos to strut his stuff. He has no policy goals in mind.
Carsafrica (California)
Going to Davos is one thing , what he does there is truly the question. Does he give a policy speech on making America great through isolation ,at a global forum which would be like preaching abstinence in a brewery. I think his presence there could contrast strongly with the appearance last year of China's President and could underline the torch of World leadership has been passed to China. Very sad, truly
Jim (California)
Trump, an adolescent in a 71 year old man's body, who neither reads journals or briefing papers, instead relying upon graphic oriented presentations, is to join the world's elite economists and participate, is a sarcasm waiting for a joke.
JHM (UK)
He offers nothing. He will likely be ignored. America first is not what they want to hear.
Getreal (Colorado)
Trump will no doubt be looking to make deals for his family businesses. He just gave himself and them, tax breaks in the 10's of millions, probably more. But since he is still hiding his tax returns, we can't tell.
MyOpinion (NYC)
Donald has always wanted to be accepted... by anyone really, but by, especially, the rich and powerful, whose club he is desperate to join. Up until now, he has been excluded for the most part from that elite society because they recognize what he is. But now, in his current [cringe] position, he is making it happen in Davos. May they ostracize him while he is there, like the rest of the world does.
Reader In Wash, DC (Washington, DC)
Hope while he is there he presents a bill to our European "allies" e.g. the dependents we have be supporting for decades. Let the Europeans pay for their own defense. They might have to give six weeks vacation, year long maternity leave, and retirement at 60. But it's not the US taxpayers' responsibility to fund that.
ellie k. (michigan)
Lots of people busy working on their handshakes I expect. And anyone think they will let themselves be pushed out of the way this time? Maybe comes down to Melania needing more new clothes? How can anyone, in view of his own statements over the past year, actually think he might be a useful participant. And are there truly people so brainless to think he will suddenly take a leadership position? What do they base this on? Perhaps letting Ivanka sit at the big table?
Neil M (Texas)
I cannot believe some of the comments below. Totally outrageous and uncalled for. It's time for some of these folks to accept that for better or worse, he will be there at least through 2020. And if a Chinese president gets a headline billing - why cannot our POTUS. And this POTUS can and will take credit - as all his predecessors - for a strong economy. It has been said that America is an engine that pulls the world. Also, it is America that innovates public policies, new investment ideas to help the economy. And the world is soon going to witness a race to lower taxes to stay current with America. I am old enough to remember when Mr Reagan declared that "government is the problem" - many laughed and called him names. But soon, the world followed him in lowering taxes and otherwise reforming governments. So, if this POTUS - on his Swiss trip - challenges the world to put it's money where it's mouth is - why, many will benefit. And he will add billions to the GDP of Switzerland - making it great again.
Tasmin Gardner (Pocatello, Idaho)
What is outrageous and uncalled for, is you calling for people to not express any contrary opinions to Trump. Sorry, this is still a democracy, no matter how hard Trump tries to destroy it.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
I was going to respond with reality-based rebuttles, however, I lack the time and inclination.
Bill McGrath (Peregrinator at Large)
Does one need an invitation to attend? If so, how did Trump get invited? If not, maybe I'll go. James, fuel the jet! I'll pack my bags.
Viewer (Texas)
May the "Very Stable Genius" stay out of Washington as long as he pleases and give the country a rest from his insane antics. Davos? Great place to get another loan from the Russians.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
Perhaps there will be a stable waiting for the....never mind.
RH (San Diego)
To the Europeans...Treat Trump like any other attendee...shun the ..I am King attitude, otherwise your constituents/voters will repay that lackey like attitude with much fewer votes. I hope they ask him about the book...and his time in St Pete with the Miss Universe contest...
John Grillo (Edgewater,MD)
What does our Fake President expect to accomplish at the "World Economic Forum"(emphasis upon "World"), given his anti-global "America First" orientation, other than to seize the opportunity to jet away on an expensive vanity junket to a posh location. Signage in the photo accompanying this piece declares "committed to improving the state of the world", re the purpose of Davos. Again, why are American taxpayers underwriting this foolish trip to a gathering at such marked cross purposes to the ultra-nationalistic policies of this outlier Administration? Perhaps Huckabee Sanders has never been to Switzerland.
Demosthenes (Chicago)
Trump is attending Davos undoubtedly to sell the rich on investing in his real estate business.
Paladin (New Jersey)
This will be embarrassing.
Dan D (New York)
He is going to promote his "America First" agenda with world leaders. WHAT?
Lynn (Outside DC)
This is his greatest dream- to rub elbows with the REAL billionaires—and it will be his most humiliating downfall. He will be shamed.
Iced Teaparty (NY)
The thoughtless elite will lecture down to the thoughtful elites
Diane Sinnott (Tiburon, CA)
They will laugh Trump out of the country.
Patrick (Wyoming)
Just another forum, another opportunity for our leader to be rude and hapless, and, for us, to feel ashamed and embarrassed before the world.
Sheila (3103)
"Presidents have rarely attended the forum in Davos, in part out of a concern that it would send the wrong message to be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s richest individuals" and "But Mr. Trump has also spent a lifetime as a real estate mogul and television personality seeking to be accepted by the financial and media elite in New York and around the world. His decision to travel to Davos as president may represent his desire to prove that he has achieved that goal." He so desperately wants to e part of the Billionaire Boys Club and now he has the chance for the first time in his shady career. May he be shunned by those attending and make sure it is his last time there.
Joe B. (Center City)
Billionaire populism. Hurray for the forgotten man. Priceless.
Patrick Stevens (MN)
It's about the money. That's all his interest is about. If Trump can feather his own nest while he is busy handing out welfare to the rich, why not? This will be a big, big meeting for Trump, rubbing up on the worlds most wealthy. He must be frothing to get there.
Concerned (Hartford CT)
You can bet "Jvanka" will be there to promote their own interests, too. Isn't 666 Fifth Avenue still in need of investors? Let's not forget Munchin and his status seeking wife. Oh the lives they lead. Populism takes a back seat for a few days. Everyone there will probably be invited back to the Trump Hotel in Washington and a round of golf in New Jersey and Florida.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
As long as the other leaders schedule meetings to end at 11:00 A.M. they won’t need to worry about him attending-you know he needs his executive time.
Eero (East End)
This is rich. Because the Republicans passed an economically ridiculous tax bill, Trump now thinks he belongs with the big boys as a player. The problem is that he won't have anything to say since he knows nothing about economics or business other than failed real estate deals. There will undoubtedly be some pandering to him, but my guess is that most guests will smile, say hello and pass on to someone worth talking to.
Mike (From VT)
Please Mr. Trump, try not to embarrass yourself and our country too much while there. One way to do that would be to keep your mouth shut. Mission Impossible!
MauiYankee (Maui)
Lazee Boy Donnie's Peeps!!! Always social climbing by Donnie Dumb Dumb..... Will they go all China/Chi over him?
Flayer (Cupertino, CA)
President Trump doesn't need to "social climb." He is the one people came to for any social climbing. Don't you get it?
Everyman (newmexico)
His handlers better be careful, he'll let all the powerful people in on what a dope he is, or step in "it" while there.
Paul (New York)
Great. He should be embarrassed and belittled and can tweet about it. It will secure America's place as a second rate country run by an idiot. Look who we elected. By the way is anybody working on the electoral college?
Kodali (VA)
We withdrew from Paris accord on climate and China took the leadership. If we withdraw from world economic forum, then China would take over the leadership. On international stage, what President Trump is undoing, China is doing. Ironically,, China is promoting what President Obama did, and thus taking moral leadership of the world. President Trump going there with trust deficit and attention will be paid what President Xi has to say. But, it is better to be there rather than staying home and tweeting.
James (St. Paul, MN.)
I always thought the Davos gathering brought together the smartest, most articulate, and most successful folks in various fields. Was some kind of special dispensation required to admit Mr. Trump?
Q (Seattle)
"clever and greedy" would be the words I'd use to describe the one person I've met who has attended.
Mclean4 (Washington D.C.)
A good idea. China's Xi Jinping was there last year. It is about time for Trump to say something to reassure the world that we are still interested in the world's economy and our participation in world affairs and we are still the leader of the world not China. They can pursue their Belt and Road initiative and we can expand our influences through other new and innovative approaches. Ours will be interactive between all countries of the world. Not just East and West as the old Silk Road. It is out of date and a traditional old Chinese Imperialist concept, tributary state relations.
Lynn (Outside DC)
You are dreaming if you think he is being ‘strategic’ He just wants to be included with the big boys. Which he won’t be.
Jorge Rolon (New York)
Do not worry. The USA will continue for some time to be the only real empire in today's world. It will continue to lead the world towards the destruction of humanity. One can only hope it will be stopped before that happens.
JD (Santa Fe)
Trump wants to join a gathering of global elites where almost certainly the most urgent topic for discussion will be global climate change, something Trump has said he does not believe in. How much more evidence do we need to know Trump does not have a functioning brain?
Jena (NC)
Well this trip is going to help the coal miners in W.V. Or maybe the globalist with help MAGA? Trump keeps dumping on his base and this and tax cuts for the rich is not why they voted for him.
William L. Valenti (Bend, Oregon)
I would wager this is so that Trump might find cover for meetings with his financiers (Russian oligarchs, all of whom attend Davos).
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
I wonder if he'll toss out any paper towels.
Chris (Wisconsin)
To my knowledge, Bill Clinton was the only other US President to attend the forum in Davos. I believe he continued to attend even after finishing his term, possibly to promote the Clinton Global initiative...
abo (Paris)
Did Davos really invite Trump? Trump's appearance will tarnish their brand like nothing before.
FrankWillsGhost (Port Washington)
Good Point. Did they actually invite him? Or is he crashing the party only to find that he'll have to wait outside behind the ropes?
Richard Luettgen (New Jersey)
Wonder what the Swiss will provide all the pie-throwers in lieu of meringue?
Sterling (Brooklyn, NY)
Trump’s probably been dying to go to this event for years but he could have never gone when he was nothing more than a reality show host with a bunch under his belt. Just another example of him using the Presidency to bolster his fragile ego. Every day Trump shows what a sad pathetic man he is. P.S. I’m sure his social climbing daughter and her grifter husband will join the party as well.
Therese (Bellingham, Washington)
Yes, Don Donald and his Mafia family will likely be there too. Another wannabe, Bono, may also be there with his visiting-card theme of "poverty," hardly likely to elicit any interest from this jet-set crowd. If there is a President around, he wants to rub shoulders with him or her, it could be amusing if he ankles up to Trump.
johnqpublius (Amherst,NY)
I'll try this again... If Trump is going to soothe his glass jaw ego and prove to the movers and shakers of the world that he has arrived, this will end badly. If he's going into the bowels of the beast to make a statement to the glitterati that the United States is no longer all in on the unrestrained, open borders, cultural suicide version of globalism that Germany and the Eurocrats have forced down the throats of the EU, I wish him the best of luck.
Maryellen Simcoe (Baltimore md)
Trump has been in over (way over) his head for some time. I suspect he won’t realize it at Davos either, unfortunately the rest of the world will.
Lew Fournier (Kitchener)
Well, this is sure to be embarrassing to the United States,
Susan (Susan In Tucson)
Trump is nothing but a wannabe.
Jacob K (Montreal)
Will Trump wing it and embarrass America on the world stage or will he struggle to read from a teleprompter and embarrass America on the world stage?
Fred Mertz (AZ.)
Let's take this out of the CNN John Tapper stupid zone. You seem to avoid the hard facts. We stopped Crooked Hillary from ruining our country. We stopped the slew of bias and lies the mainstream media was feeding America. You want wedge issues? All the Democrat have is "Hate Trump". “Together,” Trump’s speech began, “we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.” Then he dinged Democrats for failures to grasp the real risks of the black racist moment: threat to life and limb thanks to attacks on police officers and jihadist attacks in the heart of the country: Our election occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today affects our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored. The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead. This is excellent, hard-hitting stuff. America first, everyone who wants to work will have a job, the market responded with the TRUMP BUMP and a DOW record ending year. We won BIG and are Make America Great Again!
Elias Guerrero (New York)
Very good satire!
Songsfrown (Fennario, USA)
Wow?
Tim (The Berkshires)
How's Ethel?
Dan (SF)
Why? So he can insult all other attendees?
Bill Camarda (Ramsey, NJ)
I'm guessing that's the plan; Stephen Miller is probably already writing the speech.
Kang and Kodos' friend (Vancouver)
soooooooo they have a lot of rides and a food court, do they?
John Harper (Carlsbad, CA)
There is a McDonalds in Davos.
Flayer (Cupertino, CA)
Good. No reason he shouldn't eat what he likes to eat. He's way past needing to impress others with his fake elite food tastes. He's comfortable enough in his own skin to eat McDonalds if that's what he likes. And believe me, many there would LOVE to join him but their egos won't allow it. Or they're too worried about what their social set might think if they don't profess to prefer squab or endangered fish.
greg (upstate new york)
Word is our president will be running a three card monte scam in the lobby. Never miss an opportunity to pick up a few bucks. The Chinese leader on the other hand will be offering free lessons in the game of "Go".
William (Lexington, KY)
and tweet? Trump has amply demonstrated his inability to function domestically as president of the U.S. At the Forum, he will amply demonstrate his ignorance of the rest of the world.
wbj (ncal)
Grasping social climber.
Patrick McCord (Spokane)
Why is it "wrong" to rub shoulders with rich people?
JimA (Chicago)
Do they have a McDonald's outlet in Davos?
165 Valley (Philadelphia)
Oh great, another opportunity for him to embarrass the United States
Jerry (Louisiana)
I noticed a significant number of pro-Trump comments to this article. I did not think his base typically reads the New York Times. Is it possible that the White House has started a fake comment operation in the basement to combat the typically 98% of comments here that are against Trump? Would not be surprised at all, given their familiarity with fake news on their favorite media (not really news) outlets like Fox and Breitbart!
TB (New York)
@Paul Anchorage; which somehow received the "NY Times Pick" "I was puzzled till I got to the bit about President Xi attending. That’s why Trump is going. He can’t let Xi upstage him. And he gets to have a technically off the record meeting with Xi. Smart." Xi attended last year; past tense. There's nothing in the article about him attending this year, unless it has been revised, as sometimes happens without being reflected in the record, as it was back in the day. In which case I apologize. Anyway, last year at Davos was when Xi officially took control of the global economy that had magnanimously been awarded to him by Presidents Bush and Obama, to the overwhelming delight of the hard-core capitalists in attendance. As noted, it was before Trump was even inaugurated, so blaming Trump for the ascent of China is utterly absurd. There are plenty of things to blame him for, without making things up. And the childish, name-calling, and foaming-at-the-mouth Trump-bashing in these comments is destroying the reputation this newspaper once had for thoughtful commenters. I don't support him. But the comments section is becoming like a Reddit forum.
Elias Guerrero (New York)
WaPo's comments are fun, like the wild wild west.....
Douglas Lowenthal (Reno, NV)
We can certainly blame Trump for handing economic dominance of the Pacific to China.
TB (New York)
@Douglas Actually, we certainly cannot. China has been in ascendance for the entire 21st century, largely thanks to its unconditional membership in the WTO in 2001. For that we can certainly blame Bill Clinton, who was instrumental in helping to get it approved, as well as W, who was too stupid to understand it's importance. America, and the West in general, on the other hand, have been in decline for the entire 21st century. Nobody seemed to notice, but the data do not lie. Nor does the justified anger roiling the developed world at the moment. That decline is now accelerating, and will reach a tipping point to a level of social unrest that many people will consider inconceivable when the stock bubble bursts. So they were "handed economic dominance of the Pacific" more than a decade ago. Not to mention Africa. And now Europe. It was greedy CEOs and managers at multinationals, bankers, past Presidents, members of Congress of both parties, and investors that did it. And then the crisis in 2008 undermined capitalism, globalization, and democracy. China exploited all three. And the Chinese played their hand brilliantly, it must be said. All this happened well before Trump even knew who President Xi was. China is simply making it official, and the uninformed are using it as a reason to bash Trump, perhaps embarrassed at their culpability in allowing this once great country to sprial downward. But it's not over yet. The battle of AI ecosystems is just beginning.
retired guy (Alexandria)
I love the way the NYT is able to quote Xi lambasting protectionism and keep a straight face. Eschewing standard journalistic snarkiness as directed at American public figures, there was no comment to suggest that the NYT was aware of Xi's and China's actual record on the subject of protectionism. Come to think of it, maybe the NYT isn't.
Lily (Canada)
Does this mean that all participants with have to eat Big Macs and Fillet O Fish?
majorwoody (long island)
Winning is great! Getting things done and creating an atmosphere of optimism is too much for the left to handle. Collusion threats are waning so now we have a President who is crazy as a fox. Better watch out for exploding heads of leftists.
Tim (The Berkshires)
Dude, you might be president, you might be rich , but you got NO class. They'll let you in to Davos because they pretty much have to but if you get the feeling that people are laughing at you behind your back, well, that's because they are.
N. Matthew (New Hope, PA)
He probably always wanted to go but they didn't invite him because they knew his fabulous "wealth" to be a total mirage. Now the he is president, he can't really be denied and gets to crash toe party. He is so uncouth.
FrankWillsGhost (Port Washington)
Someone please tell DJT that, unlike last year, Putin will not be going to Davos this year.
George Barnett (San Diego)
So, America's most down to earth, practical, America First president in decades goes to Davos - where multi-cultural progressive policies dominate? His message to these neo-communist elitists will be simple. Play trade our way or you are denied access to America's $15,000,000,000,000 economy. How will they react under the threat of being denied 40% of the global GDP marketplace? With their tails between their legs. MAGA!
Douglas Lowenthal (Reno, NV)
Ignorance, stupidity and arrogance are not "down to earth".
chambolle (Bainbridge Island)
Let's hope he reads from a script rather than goes freewheeling, full-tilt word salad Trumpian rogue; and pray his handlers keep him on a tight leash, before he starts spilling state secrets to his new bosom buddy Xi, who is gleefully filling the leadership void left by our election of an airhead president, withdrawal from Paris and TPP, and failure to invest heavily in innovative alternative energy technology as China will be doing over the next decade.
Doug (VT)
Will he be representing himself, or the United States?
Barbara (Seattle)
By all means Mr. Trump go to Davos - take Steve Miller with you. That should be an entertaining few days of news. Who cares if the very same taxpayers you hosed are footing the bill - the ones that support you will see no irony in the fact that your true wish has always been to hobnob with the most wealthy of the world. Will there be any coal miners, truck drivers, or farmers there - taking any with you??
Debbie (Seattle, Washington)
more likely trump is looking to his own financial interest.
Peter (Germany)
The V.S.G. visiting the Davos economical forum is such a funny idea. Does he even have a small hint what Europeans are thinking about his personality? People here in Germany are just laughing when you only mention his name. It's such a funny situation, completely delusional.
Bigsister (New York)
Looking for investors in his company?
Frank word (Texas)
The negative comments on Trump from the low level information persons are hilarious. It’s like reading Venezuela leaders excuses and comments for their nightmare economy.
NewsReader (Pittsburgh )
Wonder who is he going to insult this time.
Deus (Toronto)
If he does go, Trump will be like the ex-boyfriend who wants to crash the wedding of the former girlfriend who is marrying the other guy. I guess he forgot the memo that this was actually a "world" forum, an event in which because he he and his administration chose to withdraw from the world in several areas, other than a photo-op and a free trip at American taxpayers expense, why is he even bothering?
Question Everything (Highland NY)
Why? Trump can't even spell economics. His ego-driven, rash behavior has no grounding in micro- or macro-economic theories worth considering and the world knows this.
Prof Emeritus NYC (NYC)
At least this will finally make Davos mildly interesting.
Concernicus (Hopeless, America)
I realize that this is a meeting of some, not all, of the rich and powerful. But I have a really hard time taking any group seriously that would invite Shakira to its confab.
Zell (San Francisco)
And your talents and accomplishments are...?
Jonathan London (San Francisco)
Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and other level-headed billionaires should finagle Trump into a closed-door meeting and assess his competence by asking him challenging questions.
Danno (Oahu)
Yes, the Davos globalist mentality is exactly what Donald Trump campaigned against. But, whether he agrees with them or not, it's a wise move for him to attend, and meet the people who would rule the world. Despite the revulsion of the NYT and some of their readers, he and Melania make a good impression, and other attendees will be thrilled to meet them in person. Also, Davos is a great forum to in which to declare American freedom and independence.
K Hoffman (New York)
It is his attempt to feed his ego. I suspect it will backfire on him.
Elizabeth (Roslyn, NY)
Wow! Just when his ego was taking major hits, Trump has decided to forgo the once gratifying rally in a red state to fulfilled his need for adulation and praise. A group that probably would never issue an invitation to this Grifter now has to schmooze and flatter Trump simply because he is POTUS. Hope he gets all the pictures his massive ego craves. As for Trump's base, they are no longer the glittering shouting support that Trump needs. If they thought that Trump was representing their working man American ethic, they should look at Trump as he attends Davos. Davos is Trump's new crowd. You have true and well be played.
jg (Bedford, ny)
All Trump wants to do is compare the lineup of private jets to Air Force One and tell anyone who will listen how his jet is the biggest.
robert grant (chapel hill)
Mr Trump is attending because he wants some of the glitter and favorable press to rub off on him. I am surprised that an ex-game show host needs that kind of image reinforcement.
GreggMorris (Hunter College)
Someone should tip Trump off that everyone who's planning to attend is, has or will be reading Fire and Fury.
Abbott L. Lewis (Brooklyn, New York)
Going to Davos is another way for Trump to emphasize a commitment to private sector economic expansion over growth at the Department of Regulatory Sclerosis. I'm not the only one who actually enjoys logging into my investment accounts and searching the gains from November 8, 2016 to present. Huge!
Pilot (Denton, Texas)
Our President's fascination with wealth and people of wealth is intriguing. From this article, this seems like a waste of tax payers time and resources. It will be interesting to see if he can mine anything from this party for the USA.
RS (PA)
My take as somebody who has been searching for all the reasons how he got elected is that.. the trip could be successful. What with the roaring market performance since his inauguration, the tax policy he has managed to pass, and perhaps a mammoth immigration deal.
Nick (Brooklyn)
Not rich or important enough to attend on his business or personal merits, Trump has finally found his ticket in. This only continues his reported obsessive need to be liked, admired or respected by everyone at all times. It will be embarrassing to watch the world elite run circles around this con job, the former leader of the free world.
Phil Carson (Denver)
I get it. He thinks he'll make a few business connections. And be the center of attention. Both may come true, but the reasons and outcomes remain very much up in the air.
S.L. (Briarcliff Manor, NY)
He is not smart enough to know what is going on. I'm sure the "stable genius" will think he can enhance the conference with his words of wisdom, but he will only embarrass us yet again. He won't be embarrassed because he thinks he is God's gift to the world.
Donna (Birmingham, MI)
He's going to spend taxpayer money so he can network on behalf of his personal business. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ivanka there with him.
jmf (NJ)
Actually, an unexpected and very smart political move.
TPierre Changstien (bk,nyc)
"some of Mr. Trump's advisors were befuddled" by he decision to attend. Not a single one named or quoted. typical
Jon K (Berkeley, CA)
He's going because it is not on TV. He may change his mind when he finds out that they don't have opening ceremonies with the Star Spangled Banner.
Miami Joe (Miami)
When did a commitment to improving the state of the world become a bad thing?
H.Williams (Los Angeles, CA)
I don't recall anyone criticizing President Xi Jinping of China last year when he attended. Why should it be a problem for President Trump to attend? In fact, if the Chinese President is attending, then our President better well attend to look out for and convey our interests.
Darsan54 (Grand Rapids, MI)
Perhaps it would have been more effective if Trump hadn't pulled out of the TPP, giving the Chinese a freebie on growing their influence. The only interests conveys EVER are his own.
H.Williams (Los Angeles, CA)
The proposed TPP agreement would have been even worse than NAFTA for the U.S. China, Korea and Japan would have been the primary beneficiaries of TPP so President Trump was correct in getting us out. China (and Korea) depend on the U.S. to support their economy far more than we depend on them.
MValentine (Oakland, CA)
Seriously? Davos is the Golden Globes for ugly rich people, wannabe movers and shakers and academics looking for corporate funding. A meaningless excuse for the top o' the bloat to network, schmooze, see and be seen. Trump will skip every conference and symposium, shake a few hands while his aide holds his Costco bottle of Purelle and blow. Jared and Ivanka will do their Imperial Grifter schtick and the real entertainment will be Huckabee-Sanders explaining the inevitable Twitter meltdown. If we're lucky Bill and Hillary will be there for fun optics.
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
This is a great opportunity, and being one of the wealthiest persons in the world it is nothing that he has not done in the past. I expect he will listen and propose new ideas that will assist the US and be helpful to many others in the world.
Jacques Steffens (Amsterdam)
Trump’s net worth is negative. When will you folks realize? Why do you think that no bank will lend to him or his business with the exception of Deutsche Bank which is one of the largest Western banks when it comes to managing Russian money. Please for once connect the dots. He is three time bankrupt business failure. He made good money during apprentice but all that money went on keeping up appearances.
SteveZodiac (New York)
He is hardly "one of the wealthiest persons in the world", has never attended this summit before, listening is a trait that is utterly alien to him, and thus far all his "accomplishments" have only served the wealthy. But other than that, your analysis is spot on.
FrankWillsGhost (Port Washington)
Yeah right, he'll listen - NOT. Fall asleep maybe.
j. von hettlingen (switzerland)
This year's WEF annual meeting starts on January 23 and ends on 26. It will be difficult to stage protests against his presence, because Davos will be sealed off from the outside world. It remains to be seen how long Trump wants to stay. Most world leaders leave after the first day, leaving junior partners behind to negotiate with others. Perhaps he is seeking new business ties for his Trump Empire, taking his daughter, son-in-law, or perhaps his sons with him. Trump can't just travel to Europe to attend the WEF. He might continue to the UK and inaugurate the new American embassy in London. To avoid outrage in Britain - he is huge unpopular - he might just make it a working trip and keep a low profile.
CWellmer (Jacksonville, FL)
Why is Trump going to Davos? They use big words; introduce complex subjects. Davos is not going to 'dumb down' as NATO did for this ignoramus. Why is he even bothering to go when he will be bored the first ten minutes of the first day?
Irene (Denver, CO)
What could go wrong? What could possibly go wrong?
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
Nothing!!! Nothing!!! Globalist might accept the reality that we are not going to cooperate against our interests.
RamS (New York)
More like be the sell out that he is. He's already scammed the average person in the US and now he's going to schmooze up to all the political celebrities at Davos because he's insecure and egotistic.
Sean (MN)
The article reads like is was intended for small children and fails to make the simple and obvious point that he's trying to crash the party in Davo. Brilliant move.
Chicagogirrl13 (Chicago)
Please don't let him go! He is an embarrassment to the US and shouldn't be allowed out of the country.
canislupis (New York)
On the other hand, he shouldn't be allowed in the country either.
JimA (Chicago)
Wrong - as soon as he's out of the country, build that wall!
BFranklin (You know where)
Nothing good comes from Chicago....nothing.
CdRS (Chicago, IL)
Does Trump know where Davos is? Does he know anything about economics if it doesn't involve his personal wallet? If not he should not go to Davos and shame our country again!
Peter (Germany)
No, he doesn't know where Davos is, he just wants to play the Big Zampano in the intention to impress others with his genius personality. Do Americans realize what a clown is heading their State. For European standards this is almost unbelievable.
Kevin (Rockwall TX)
He’s going to declare victory. He has achieved record employment for minorities, tax cuts, booming markets, lowest number of layoffs since ‘92 AND he did it in spite of 90% negative media coverage, lies, made up stories, hate filled kooks, Soros funded anti-Americanism AND WITHOUT the blessings of the Elites!
DR (New England)
He inherited a good economy and is doing his best to run it into the ground. The other attendees will be laughing at him.
left coast finch (L.A.)
Keep drinking that Texas tea. All of these supposed accomplishments are merely continuations of the same trends under Obama and because it was Obama's administration that did the hard work of cleaning up the big mess left by the last Republican. None of this could be accomplished in a mere year under the best of circumstances and the current president is a proven semi-literate child who must be managed by his inner circle. There's just no way his chaotic and inexperienced White House is responsible for the current economy.
SteveZodiac (New York)
Don't forget he eliminated any air traffic deaths in 2017, all by himself. Next year: a cure for cancer, no doubt. Oh, and this, too: http://fox4kc.com/2017/12/20/hundreds-of-metro-att-employees-laid-off-ju...
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Will there be cake? And ice cream?
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
Probably and if they don't have any Air Force one will.
JeffB (Plano, Tx)
Indeed. The most beautiful chocolate cake.
James (St. Paul, MN.)
More importantly----no Big Macs.......
J Sharkey (Tucson)
Can you lose the ridiculous word "mogul" when applied to this guy? I know you wouldn't say "real estate swindler," but how about just "developer" instead?
Peter (Germany)
Very Stable Genius is much, much better.
Phil Carson (Denver)
How about "failed developer who filed half a dozen bankruptcies," stiffed contractors to increase his margins, etc.?
165 Valley (Philadelphia)
"Real estate swindler" works very well. Of course there are several other epithets I would suggest, but the NYT's would not find them acceptable.
EricK (Fort McMurray, Alberta)
Well, I guess one should expect a few sleepless, Twitter-filled nights when he finally realizes that those ostensibly among his class actually consider him as nothing but a low-class phony and nobody. He's probably hoping the Prime Minister of Montenegro will be there for him to elbow aside again as he puffs his chest in his "Look at me" bully move.
jack (texas)
Just another genius in Davos.
Don (Excelsior, MN)
Do you mean, really, like, he's smart?
Jack (CA)
America First. Amazing how that angers the left so much. Amazing. Shows you how far away they are from the concept of American exceptionalism. Years of "global citizen" nonsense from Obama I guess.
RamS (New York)
If Trump actually put America first, it may at least indicate he has some integrity. That is not what he has done. What he has done has hurt the average American in the long term for sure and some in the short term as well. We are all humans, and that's what matters, not nations and borders which will eventually become obsolete (already has to to a large degree in the virtual world, and more and more of reality will become virtual as technology accelerates exponentially, not the other way around).
SDC (Princeton, NJ)
Why does he need to go to Switzerland to tout American exceptionalism?
Welcome Canada (Canada)
American exceptionalism! Whai is that? A one class society, a class reserved to the privileged. And you are proud of that?
Ernesto A. Trujillo (Tucson, AZ)
Regardless of how one may feel about Mr. Trump, one cannot prevent our president from conducting the nation’s business. It is in fact that I prefer to see him walking in the footsteps of presidential activities then spending time creating unforgiving tweets.
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
As we saw today he can do both, and do it in ways that have never happened before.
Maurelius (Westport)
That's it, he is not conducting the nations business, He will be promoting his hotels. He is going to seek the attention he desperately needs and desires; to be seen as the American President by all those smarter richer people whose acceptance he craves.
JA (MI)
did you miss this part? "Presidents have rarely attended the forum in Davos, in part out of a concern that it would send the wrong message to be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s richest individuals."
Rico (NYC)
"Some of Mr. Trump’s advisers were befuddled by his planned trip..." Oh really? Which ones? Care to share a name? Perhaps an unattributed quote? Is an allegedly long-term yearning for acceptance by the global elite really the only possible reason you could think of to explain why Trump might want to attend? This piece, which is long on subjective unflattering speculation and short on fact, raises questions of motivation on the part of its authors to this reader.
Marie (Boston)
Bringing America First to the world's business people? I am sure that will go over well. I am also sure that hoping to be the center of attention has absolutely nothing to do with it with his attending.
OSS Architect (Palo Alto, CA)
The runway at Davos is 900 ft shorter than the minimum specified runway for an Air Force One type Boeing 747. That's at sea level, and Samedan Airport is at 5,600 ft. He'll likely have to land at Zurich and take a 2 hour motorcade drive to Davos, or a flight on Marine One over mountainous terrain which could be closed to flight operations under common weather conditions in the area. This trip will make Trump the most logistically exposed president in modern history; which is a fact not lost on the Secret Sservice.
Patrick Vincent (Neuchâtel, Switzerland)
If it's any comfort, the event will be protected by over a thousand Swiss military. As a Swiss taxpayer I'm always annoyed at having to pay for this every year, but this time around I am profoundly annoyed and wish Trump would just stay home.
jmm (dallas,tx)
Did you mention the added travel cost? Added benefit to taxpayers?
Danno (Oahu)
I'm sure The Donald will relish making his entrance in as spectacular a way as possible. Don't worry about security, Switzerland is nothing if not safe.
Steven (Brenner)
Potentially, he will be able to make some deals favorable to the US. This may mean that some of the deals will not be politically correct, but economics is the new nationalism. Look at Venezuela, economic catastrophe. North Korea, economic sanctions. Russia following occupation of Crimea, economic sanctions. Refugee problem in Europe appears to be largely fueled by economic refugees, especially those from Sub-Sahara Africa and North Africa. People from Middle East, a mixture of economic refugees and people fleeing from ISIS. ISIS was running on money from smuggled oil, apparently from occupied regions of Syria and Iraq. Then increasing taxes on occupants of regions they invaded and occupied. Recent demonstrations and protests in Iran in response to economic hardship, despite lifted sanctions and cash from the nuclear deal. Russian influence over Europe is from the oil and gas they sell to Europe, giving them cash flow to modernize their military and threaten Europe. Asian economies are reaching dominance in some regions of the world, Chinese businessmen setting up shop in all corners while the Chinese economy develops steam running on a largely cashless society. Trump better be there.
Rio Sam (TX)
Ditto that! Very important for him to be there.
Alison Cartwright (Moberly Lake, BC Canada)
Davos is not a "dealmaking" event.
Mikeyz (Boston)
He can attend. The world and business leaders will be respectful. He will give more info than he receives. They will plan their strategies accordingly. That's the stable genius's contribution to America 'winning'.
Jackie Shipley (Commerce, MI)
He's not only NOT draining the swamp, but now he's swimming in it. Can't wait to see how he embarrasses us at this meeting.
Ambroisine (New York)
Cloaca Maxima, my friend :)
Ofay Cat (Canada)
Trump at Davos is like a cream pie in the face of the globalist elites. His presence will remind them that there is another power in the world that doesn't want to go along with their globalist ideas. That is the people of the United States of America and many conservatives in the rest of the western world. Freedom lovers everywhere should be kissing Donald Trump's feet. He is working hard to protect what's left of our individual freedoms and dignity.
Czeilman (US)
And the rest of the world will go around us and the U.S. will be on the outside in the cold while the rest of the world gets on with their business.
Peter (Germany)
He has no chance to put the brake to globalist tendencies. His appearance is completely unnecessary because he has nothing to contribute.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
An Economic Forum. Great, HE has a lot of experience. In bankruptcy.
Paul (Anchorage)
I was puzzled till I got to the bit about President Xi attending. That’s why Trump is going. He can’t let Xi upstage him. And he gets to have a technically off the record meeting with Xi. Smart.
USMC1954 (St. Louis)
And he has the American tax payers to pick up the tab.
Em Jay (Portland)
Hmmm. I don’t think President Xi will be there. I fear the move is more about Trump’s ego and proving he is worthy of the elite club. Definitely not as smart as you think.
Kristine (Illinois)
I hope he is ignored by all.
Rigoletto (Zurich)
Strange to me: you elect him!
Steve Squared (Chicago)
As usual NYT takes the side and vantage of communist dictators to lambaste a US president who seeks to keep Americans gainfully employed.
Kleav (NYC)
No, they're taking the side of the people who understand the purpose of the forum. The man won't even be able to have a well-informed conversation with the other attendees.
Ambroisine (New York)
Oh, you got that right!! Our President has cozied up to the two major Communist dictators, and practically "bent the knee." Turn the telescope around, and look through the small end, not the big end, Steve. As for trying to keep US citizens gainfully employed, you may wish to recall that the unemployment numbers improved immensely under Barack Obama. Trump is merely riding the wave.
vulcanalex (Tennessee)
How might you know that? Read it here???
Brenda (Essex Fells, NJ)
Ironically this year Davos is billing itself as being chaired and organized by women. Why was this fact not in this NYT piece? And appropos of nothing, Forest Whitaker is a Scientologist.
DJ (KCMO)
Probably because the media could care less about women, sad to say... unless it is forced to "virtue signal" and "pink wash" itself because so many of it's own have been outed as predators and creeps. American politics, generally, is all about the optics and what is said... not what gets done. The publics cynicism about the professional political class is what got Trump elected. Unproven allegations not withstanding... Trump and his companies, have treated women, professionally, FAR better than the political class, media, and most of the rest of the corporate world, and that's an understatement. Wonder why we have never seen media do a piece on "Women of the Trump Organization"? We know why... don't we?
CdRS (Chicago, IL)
Trump brings shame to our country wherever he goes. He should stay home with his deranged buddies, especially that crazy Miller guy who has serious problems. Grassley and Graham are 2 other of his mental friends. They can watch TV together but they all should stay out of government business permanently We'd appreciate it.
The Commoner (St. Louis)
Right. We should all loathe a president who seeks to promote and build American economic interests around the world after they have been subjugated by "globalism" for decades. How "deranged." I'm sure the president would just appreciate a "thank you."
SteveZodiac (New York)
LOL. "Subjugated", eh? The world is moving on without us, my friend. If you think global markets are subjugation, just wait until we cannot access them any more.
Karl Brockmeier (Boston & Berlin)
@The Commoner: You seem to dwell in an alternative universe. It's been a year with Trump in office. Have you noticed ANY economic improvement in St. Louis? And I'm surprised you didn't address the comment about Stephen Miller. I suppose you approve of that psycho?
Matt (Dallas)
This is interesting. I see the author's point that it does go against his populist message. I think it depends what his message is when he is at the conference. President Trump has always recognized that the US cannot exist in a bubble. International trade is an important part of our economy. His chief complaint has been that historically our trade deals have not been particularly good for us. Is this trip an attempt to work on better deals for the US?
Don (USA)
Business, jobs and the middle class will keep booming under Trump
Julie Carter (Maine)
Don, Read the latest report. Job growth in 2017 was the lowest in six years. And business will boom only if there are people who can afford to spend. Meanwhile the stockmarket is in the midst of a major bubble, especially when stocks like Amazon sell at price/earnings ratios of about 1000! Its all a ponzi scheme and the big money will get out first.
Todd Nelson (Florida)
It took almost the entire article to say why Trump is going, Xi will be there. Trump needs to talk to Xi about N Korea in person. This will give them the informal opportunity to speak on any subject they desire, without having the press hound them. It seems the NY Times still can't be honest about anything Trump.
Bob (Ohio)
Is there a Trump Davos Hotel Casino Golf Club And Racetrack? Surely we can't expect The Very Stable Genius President Of The United States to stay in any lesser accomodations! And I'm not sure there are enough televisions in all of Switzerland to satisfy his TV addiction! I guess he'll just have to stay home!!! SAD!!!!! (not)
Long-Term Observer (Boston)
Think of it as a mid-winter vacation at one of the world's most expensive resorts.
CWellmer (Jacksonville, FL)
Oh, that we are paying for--now that makes sense. I suppose the whole family is going with all their Secret Service requirements, too.
Rigoletto (Zurich)
Problem paying? Poor American! Deduct it from the mexican wall.
S Sutherland (Hawaii)
Go Trump! We are taking our country back from the left-wing deep state authoritarian government aided and abetted by the Fake News organization like the New York Times that remains out of touch with the American people!
TB (New York)
@Jane Davos is one of the root causes of all the turmoil in the world. The "ideas generated from the forum" in the past have been listened to--and retained--by world leaders, politicians, economists, and business leaders. And then they implemented them. And that's precisely why the world is in such a perilous state. It's also why Trump got elected. And it also explains Brexit. Macron. The implosion of the political systems across Europe, including the collapse of Merkel. Wilders. Kurz. Orban. The rise of nationalism, anti-immigrant sentiment, and inequality to society-destabilizing levels across the developed and developing worlds, alike. The stunning--absolutely stunning--ascent of China. And the corresponding precipitous decline of the West, and Western liberal democracy with it. In other words, it didn't work out so "great".
Darlene Littlejohn (Michigan)
So true. I am glad that President Trump plans to go. I have found that if you don't agree with some things, show up so you have a say.
CdRS (Chicago, IL)
He will shame us again! He should stay home watching Fox. He knows nothing of the world, climate, taxes, immigration, or politics. He is dishonest and mentally deranged and should not even in office. Hopefully he will stay home in hiding. If only he would go away.
Rico (NYC)
306 of 578 electoral votes say he should be in office.
SDC (Princeton, NJ)
Funny how gerrymandering works. A majority of actual votes say otherwise.
Chris Curtis (Callington)
I can't say I agree at all with the idea that Trump's attendance of Davos is at odds with his campaign message and supporters. People knew, very clearly knew, Trump was and is a businessman. That is not a surprise, out of character, or contrary to his campaign.
ClearedtoLand (WDC)
Count on Jared being there, rattling the tin cup for real estate rescue loans and utterly conflicted deals.
Steve (Seattle)
He is just going to sell memberships to Mara Lago
Martin Green (San Diego)
Please don't go, Trump. If you must go then please don't be rude to the other attendees. Try being nice, it is not a sign of weakness, just the opposite - the ability to treat others with kindness comes from a position of strength and stability. Those are two things, strength and stability, which much of the world believes you lack. Show them, SHOW THEM ALL, just how kind and thoughtful you can be. Don't push anyone out of the way, don't jut your chin out, ask Abe if he would like more tea. And for God's sake, stay clear of Putin. Think how funny his name is, Don, think: Poooootin. Like a fart, right? Farts are funny, right??? Poooootin is funny!!! There you go, you're getting it. Be nice.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Please keep him. Seriously.
Andrea (Switzerland)
No, thank you!
Debbie (Den Haag)
My guess is all those Hollywood elite will choose NOT to attend now that Trump will be there. #TimesUp Donny!
TL (CT)
DT is going because he's a stable genius and the world need to witness it first hand
johnwallis (USA)
The pro Trump comments here are absolutely hilarious.
Willie Brown (Pretoria, South Africa)
Comrade Trump is going to embarrass the United States, if that's even possible anymore.
Peggy Stewat (Upperville Virginia)
Please explain to me why the left had no one of any decency, integrity, intelligence, and accomplishment to run against him ? Just look at the miserable choice you offered the American people...what did you expect???
James (Oklahoma)
We let you do it for us....not again.
Raymond L Yacht (Bethesda, MD)
Fascinating. Per Huckabee, he's going to promote the America First meme. Sure he is, that's what Davos is all about....
jeanne marie (NM)
Putin must be going.
Ironbob (Earth)
My only measure of success with anything concerning the President is if it ticks off leftists, it's a success. This should send the Antifa babies over the cliff.
Marie (Boston)
I want to bookmark this. When people ask when will Trump supporters learn whenever Trump does something that hurts them, I remind them of the interviews with people like Ironbob who don't care what it costs them. Job. Home. Freedom. Or Health. As long as them liberals are don't like then these people are all for it. At any and all personal cost. I appreciate Ironbob speaking up that to verify and validate.
aroundaside (los angeles, ca)
I think he's taking resumes to hand out.
PacNW (Cascadia)
. He's obviously going there to tell them all to go jump in a lake, to put it nicely.
profwatson (california and Louisana)
The Clintons "rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s richest individuals." did this often, according to wikileaks, that is how they got their 100's of millions.
Julie Carter (Maine)
And Trump got his by inheritance, stiffing contractors, declaring bankruptcy while paying himself, starting fraudulent "universities," etc.
Ellen (Detroit)
Obama didn't go because he doesn't understand business at all and there weren't enough celebrities in attendance. He certainly didn't mind rubbing shoulders with the world's wealthiest people, nor do the Clintons. I'm glad Trump is going and trust he will be there to represent our country's economic interests and growth.
Padman (Boston)
I am surprised that Donald trump is attending this World Economic Forum. Globalisation and international harmony are the themes of World Economic Forum. How does he fit into that? Their theme , "Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World" is something Trump does not believe in.
Dr. Joe (masachusetts)
was he even invited?
Kate (Paris, France)
He will go in Mueller shackles with a hair-matching orange suit. That is what the world will see through.
Kevin (Rockwall TX)
If he wasn’t ud already know, wouldn’t u. Stop TRYING to poopoo something u wish u had
Sparky Jones (Charlotte)
Wolf in the hen house. I am betting all the "correct" people will decide not to attend because Trump is attending. They will be damned if they attend and damned if they don't. Trump wins either way. The "Stable Genius" strikes again.
scout (Canada)
Just a very expensive photo op. Staff will have to work overtime to keep away so many of those who will snub him. If Tom Barrack is there you can be assured 45 will be stuck to him like glue. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the Eastern European oligarchs who show up and how disappointed he will be when his ring is not kissed. At the foreign summits he's attended the leaders of other countries HAD to be polite to him. There will be no such standard at Davos.
Rebecca (Sydney)
Is this Trump flipping the bird to Bannon - and, by extension to his base (though they might not eve realise it), or simply a very expensive photo opportunity for all involved? Regardless, it is a timely reminder of the hypocrisy of Trump and his administration.
Templewind (California)
@Scot- You mean like when Obama wasn’t given a reception in China, and forced to exit his jet from the rear door?
Molly Bloom (NJ)
Trump: a Davos man : rich, elite, and far removed from respective communities to be representative of the world as a whole.
Susan (Washington)
Ugh. What in the world would he say or would he learn. His limited attention span alone will have him out the door in 2 minutes.
Bob (Ohio)
Maybe they have a nice golf course..? Oh, but I'm sure it wouldn't be up to his standards. After all, it doesn't have his name on it...
Kevin (Rockwall TX)
And u know his attention span HOW exactly? Or r u simply making up LIES like all of the other failures & haters?
Templewind (California)
With all the limitations ppl and the press have given this POTUS, it’s downright miraculous how much Trump has accomplished. Wish I was so unfortunately endowed, with similar results. How about you?
RP Smith (Marshfield, Ma)
When America sends it's people, we're not sending our best. We're sending people with a lot of problems, and they bring those problems with them.
Mike (Republic Of Texas)
Maybe Mr. Wolff can be part of the entourage. His goal, this time, taking notes, maybe making a few recordings. Observe and write the truth. He owes everybody that bought his first novel that much. And, we wait breathlessly for the next "Trump is crazy" story soon.
George (Pa)
I see, you were in the White House when Wolff was? How can you be sure if "Fire and Fury" is made up.
Woolie (E Wash)
How can you be sure it's not?
Occupy Government (Oakland)
Perhaps while he's gone, we can build a wall to keep him out.
Paulytical (Occupied California)
Excellent! It is the President's job to promote America and American interests, and Mr. Trump is a passionate spokesman for American workers and American products.
CB (Iowa)
Too bad he employs foreigners in the foreign countries he makes all his clothes and merchandise.
George (Pa)
Nonsense! If that were true he wouldn't be having his ties made in China and his Mar a Lago workers imported from Eastern Europe.
scott wilson (santa fe, new mexico)
Trump is a spokesman only for Trump. Trump cares only for how the world views himself, his family of grifters, and all their assorted foreign-made trinkets.
Tim Bones (Wisconsin)
I'm a fan of Pres. Trump but I am disappointed in his decision to go to Davos. he promised to MAGA and should stay in D.C. to work on the issues he said he would fix and to work with Congress getting the legislation needed to enable these fixes. Rubbing shoulders with the rich world elite in a photo op is not what we Trump voters like to see.
Rebecca (Sydney)
You were conned. Rubbing shoulders with rich world elite and being photographed with important or famous people is all your "stable genius", Mr Insecure, who vainly craves recognition and admiration, is interested in. If you haven't realised that yet, maybe the alleged Davos junket will open your eyes.
Todd Nelson (Florida)
Trump is going to Davos, primarily, to meet with the Chinese premier Xi. Trump needs to meet face to face with Xi to discuss North Korea, and the Chinese lack of honoring their commitments. Both will be in Davos at the same time, so they can have informal talks, and, maybe, enjoy themselves.
dirktazer (chicago)
....but what did you expect?
Joann Spumanti (earth)
I really doubt Pres. Trump is going to Davos because he has a desire to be accepted by the elites of NY. I think he knows exactly who and what those people are and he never liked it, never cared for them. He is going to Davos to declare victory.
Julie Carter (Maine)
Most Mar-a-Lago members are elites of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut!
Terrier (Connecticut)
This is right up his alley. I'm sure his message will be America is now a favorable place to do business. Very good move Mr. President. Jobs, jobs, jobs.
Corbin (Minneapolis)
Job-killing billionaires.
Mauricio (Tejas)
People do realize that individuals have been taking care of themselves and their needs first and then interacting with others? It is a basic principle since before history was recorded. What we have been doing is self destructing and if continued we will be left with China or Russia running things and that will be bad for anyone that wants a fair shake in this world.
Thomas (San Diego, CA)
Of course Trump is using his presidential credentials to crash the exclusive party at Davos. His true net worth isn't high enough for him to get into the club any other way.
Ironbob (Earth)
Whatever works, dude.
OSS Architect (Palo Alto, CA)
The World Economic Forum could avoid this gatecrasher by just announcing that no Happy Meals (tm) will be available at the event.
Ray (Georgia)
Presidents rarely attend because it sends the wrong message??? These foreign countries make plans to fleece the American people. Now Trump is going to take them head-on to make the best deals possible for us. MEGA! This is fantastic and the dems are rallying around Oprah to take Trump out. By the way, this fake book designed to discredit Trump is another example of how desperate the libs are to remove Trump. If Trump didn't want to be president then why did he collude with the Russians? Oh, oh, that's right, the book and the collusion is fake. (he,he,he,he.....)
Raymond L Yacht (Bethesda, MD)
Try to stay on topic please. Positing a stream of random Fox bullet points is....boring.
dirktazer (chicago)
Yeah, anything critical of TRump is "fake". Please tell us how someone who inherited millions but declared numerous bankruptcies and has had to get Questionable Russian money to stay afloat, is a great deal maker?
Robert (Canada, BC)
Anyone think Trump will go there to champion the middle class or even put America before his own greed? Cricket noises...thought so! Trump is going to inflate his ego and enrich himself on the taxpayers dime.
Jason (M)
Rubbish! That's merely your sore-loser side talking. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave 80 percent of taxpayers a tax reduction. 2018 will be even better!!
Less1leg (Pie-In-Da-Sky)
So, you say that Trudeau with his push-over government of no-nothing Glam Magazine writers he calls International Trade Minister. Liberal Ministers who have never run a Business should represent and guy's like Trump who have experience shouldn't attend. Trump is representing AMERICAN business first. I congratulate him on that. Far too long liberals have sold out domestic policy and sent a lot of business trade elsewhere, ONLY TO BE CRAPPED ON. Trudeau is a laughing stock, his Trade Minister Freeland is a fool and Climate Barbie is one brain cell short of defecating herself. Are these the fools you prefer to represent you in Business?
Ironbob (Earth)
You really didn't give anyone a chance to answer did you? His economic record thus far is the envy of every President before him.
KM (Houston)
Well, of course he will. It's accreditation by proximity and a photo op like last night's waste of fuel and money to show up at the football game.
jane (NYC)
It appears that topics will include: Shaping the Future of Consumption Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society Shaping the Future of Economic Progress Shaping the Future of Education, Gender and Work Shaping the Future of Energy Shaping the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security Shaping the Future of Financial and Monetary Systems Shaping the Future of Food Security and Agriculture Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare Shaping the Future of Information and Entertainment Shaping the Future of International Trade and Investment Shaping the Future of Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development Shaping the Future of Mobility, and Shaping the Future of Production If President Trump actually listens -- and retains -- ideas generated from the forum, that would be great. On the other hand, listening and retaining knowledge are not his core competencies, are they?
Ironbob (Earth)
Does not say much for his opposition now does it?
Marie (Boston)
There is only one topic he would be willing to listen to: Shaping the Future of Trump Wealth The rest he would ridicule and talk at or about. Most he doesn't even believe are real things.
Kevin Ma (Edmonton)
How do you convince business leaders to invest in your country when your administration pursues trade policies that restrict free trade and restrict talented individuals from entering the country?
THW (VA)
Forever spurned as an outsider by the wealthy and the elite, 45 has found his ticket in. What type of overreaction can we expect once he finds out that he still is not welcome and does not belong?
john plotz (hayward, ca)
What makes you think he would not be welcome?
see (PA)
The Forum's response to his comments will be handled so elegantly that the real message will sail way over that orange pelted head; he won't have a clue.
TC (Arlington, MA)
Of course he does. Trump needs more ideas on how he can monetize the presidency.
Phillip Vasels (New York)
Trump is only going to look for new investment funding for Trump Inc. now that the cover has been blown on Trump family dealings with Deutsche Bank and their Russian money lending.
Lorie (Portland, OR)
In other words, he intends on embarrassing us again, on an international level. What could the attendees possibly reap from his “America First” schtick? Does he honestly think they got to where they are by being told to tow the American line? This should be interesting.
Unity (Dwight IL)
No, our excellent president - who has got our engine running again after the globalist and their puppets dumped sugar in the engine - intends to face the corporate leaders of the World and get them to fall in line or else. Exactly like he did with the Silicon Valley Sultans. Trump is literally the greatest most courageous president we've seen since Andrew Jackson.
ellienyc (New York City)
I think it's just another performance put on to impress his "base."
Jason (M)
Well said. It's precisely the fact that American is getting stronger that frustrates the Alt-Left so much! Fun to watch!!
