Safe district, always has been.

Ah, James Damore. I knew it was a matter of time before he, or his handlers, decided to sue Google because they are "biased against white men with conservative views." Mr. Damore's ranting memo about biological differences, or whatever permeates the mind of a 26 year old male with few options for dating women in an all male work environment, is just that: ranting. He thinks these thoughts he's having, and worth writing about, are 1. original and 2. profound. Mr. Damore just needs to grow up.

The real money is in Lobbying !!

I am sick of these sell out Republicans that put party and profit over country. I will do my part to turn California more blue.
Dorothy Reik (Topanga)
Sammy Jamal also has been running against Royce, He is a lifelong Democrat and lives in the district. Cisneros, mentioned in your article, ifs a former Republican and lottery winner who does not live in the district. Do your homework!
Former Republican (NC)
Didn't his wife land a cushy job in the administration on the same day ? If so, why not mention it. Smells like a quid pro quo.
Dominique (Upper west side)
This is exactly why you vote for the new wave of Democrats , Jess Phoenix is who comes to mind, and she is running in CA.
Mark (California)
Great news, but let's not stop there. Dana "Russiabacker" Rohrabacher , who GOP House whip McCarthy noted that Rohrabacher was probably taking money from Putin , will hopefully get a clue too and surf off into the sunset. But the juiciest target by far is Devin Nunes. I'd move heaven and earth to get that Trump sycophant out of Congress. I'm in Cal. and have joined several groups , Redtoblue among them, to do just that.
Jim (California)
Ed Royce did to his voting district what Trump did to the many women he(Trump) has bragged about. Royce has always been a pathetic, loathsome, narrow minded wretched excuse for a human being, and has left behind greater inequality and division than when he was first elected.
Joseph Barnett (Sacramento)
It will be very hard for any Republican to get elected in California after what they did to our taxes. We were singled out by the Republican leadership and it won't be forgotten.

"...after 13 terms,.." and that was at least 11 too many. We need term limits. Even the congress knows that by limiting the number of terms one can spend as head of a committee. That is why the rats are leaving--their INFLUENCE is gone. They are now just a backbencher. Their money comes from their influence. How to get the money out of politics? Take away the influence peddling.
N8t (Out Wes)
Wise choice Ed. Not very brave, but wise. You voted against California's best interests and you should be run out of town, not just office.

The food that Aramark provides in Yosemite is so bad that Starbucks might be a relief.
PJT (S. Cali)
They'll all just end up employed on K Street, in the Trump Annex, aka The Swamp.

YEA YEA YEA! Glad he is leaving. Let's replace him w a Democrat!

In the politics of California, New York, and Illinois, we see wisdom in the Framers' adoption of the Electoral College. In this case, it keeps large Progressive states from foisting their ruinous policies on the rest of the nation. After all, imagine trying to tell the citizens of Texas, that they must offer unfettered abortion up to 9 months--and that taxpayers must foot the bill for it. Imagine telling the citizens of Arizona--that they must allow all illegal aliens to enter their state--and even if they commit crimes, cannot be handed over to federal authorities--or that they must be given in-state tuition, or drivers licenses. Imagine telling the citizens of Vermont, that their handguns have been banned. In other words, we should thank the Founders of our country for their farsightedness--for realizing that there may come to exist, from time-to-time, large populous states whose citizens adhere to whacky ideas--who would seek to dominate the national political landscape. Thankfully, ever in California, there are pockets of sanity.

Regarding the Starbucks/Yose piece: If it's that Lodge cafe area by the door they serve Peet's now. Replacing that with Bux is a serious downgrade and Bay Area Peets die-hards will not be happy about that. Maybe that should have been the petition. Alfred Peet was the one who taught the bux founders how to roast after all (owned privately now though, part of Big Coffee). Regardless, bux would be one more reason to hate the food in the valley.
Janet Goodman (California)
Due to certain health and family issues I have never actively worked for a candidate. I am now going to do so in every election from here on out to thwart Trump's agendas and of course make sure he doesn't win again.

I’ve known Mr. Royce for over two decades. He is a thorough gentleman. However, notwithstanding that, it is hard to see how he could have won after supporting anti-California tax changes and the rest of Trump agenda. Clearly, Mr. Royce has seen the writing on the wall and he is trying to make it easier for Republicans to retain his seat. Voters can see through this. Mr. Royce or not, this seat is a goner for Republicans.
Daniel Kinske (West Hollywood, CA)
Another "stable genius" in our midst. I'd wave good-bye, but I'm waiting for the November Wave.
rRussell Manning (San Juan Capistrano, CA)
Issa won last time by a half point to Col Applegate who is likely to defeat Issa. And Rohrabacher has been hauled into the House Investigation Committee because of his long closeness to Russians and affinity for Putin. Eric Swalwell is being invited almost daily to appear on CNN and/or MSNBC and makes a sterling representation of his district, his state, and the nation. Presidential material? Oh, yes! Articulate, intelligent, poised, and attractive. This is the midterm to say farewell to those members of the Party of NO who were determined to oppose Pres. Obama who reputation continues to soar.
Next Conservatism (United States)
As California goes, so goes the House. If the Golden State goes Blue, and if that tips the House to the Democrats, Ryan is neutralized. Nunes can no longer warp the Intelligence Committee to his ends. Trump's strengths and prospects are reduced to noise. The sane Republicans see it too. They need to shake off this fugue state, reboot their whole party away from exhausted partisanship, and start acting like they're Americans again.
Soroor (CA)
Mr. Royce and his Republican colleagues(12 out o 14 votes yes) voted for the tax bill which takes away major deductions for many Californians. Earlier in 2017 these same Republicans asked the Trump administration not to fund the Caltrain electrification(they eventually failed on this). They also approve of drilling in the waters off of California. These reps are doing their best to hurt California and are treasonous. They must get voted out and replaced with a Democrat or a Republican who loves the state and wants to protect its interest.
Joseph Barnett (Sacramento)
I hope the Democrats find a great replacement for this guy. There is no reason to support Republicans in this next election. The Republican Congressional seats in NY, NJ and California should turn blue and give us a Congress that can balance the insanity coming out of the White House.
Michael J. (Santa Barbara, CA)
Let's recap: he votes to eliminate access to healthcare and to increase taxes on Californians and now worries that he might not be re-elected? Wow, nothing gets by him!
Sage (California)
Turn his district BLUE!
mb (CA)
Every Republican in California needs to be defeated. Start with traitor Devin Nunes. Issa also. That will mean we only need 10 more from other places to turn the house. Also let's not elect more Pelosi Dems, we need more Eric Swalwells.
Garlic Eye (San Diego)
And get rid of that traitor Dana Rohrbacher in 2018!
Christine (California)
You left out the worst, Dana Rohrabacher of Huntington Beach. He is known, even by the republican party, as Putin's Favorite Congressman. https://www.wired.com/2017/05/even-dana-rohrabacher-russian-asset-know/ Representative Kevin McCarthy—another Californian and, like Rohrabacher, a stalwart ally of President Donald Trump—said (jokingly, it seems) “there’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump.”
SD Rose (Sacramento)
Mr. Royce said he wanted to use his last year in that position to focus on “urgent threats facing our nation,” including “Vladimir Putin’s continued efforts to weaponize information to fracture western democracies.” It would be helpful if Mr. Royce shares this information with the WH before he leaves his position. Our POTUS continues to think it is all about him, and not a threat to democracy
John Grillo (Edgewater,MD)
Ah, Congressional members of the Party of Trump, the remaining lifeboats on your sinking vessel are diminishing. Better grab a dry spot on what's left, and line up some lucrative employment in your post-incumbency world, i.e. the Swamp. MAGA.
Grove (California)
The next step after "smash n' grab".
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, CA)
I'd like to see a Starbucks in Yosemite, with bears for baristas however. Then I could really say I had a brush with nature there without having to give any city comforts up.
Jeff (California)
Coffee has been sold in Yosemite for ever there is a barista in the Cafeteria at Yosemite Lodge. Their coffee is just so-so. Great news that Starbucks will take over.
Rita (California)
Time to cash in on connections and become a lobbyist? Not to worry too much for Ed. His wife just got a job in the Trump Administration.
GreedRulesUS (Santa Barbara)
The GOP is dead. What we see today are nothing more than Zombies. Some, like Mr Royce have enough decency to crawl back to their grave and beg forgiveness.
S B Lewis (Lewis Family Farm, Essex, N. Y.)
Another pulpy faced White guy is leaving politics. But not the one I should like to see departing. I am a White man, turning 79 this month. Am I ashamed to be an American. Do I recall Vietnam? The Ugly American?
S B Lewis (Lewis Family Farm, Essex, N. Y.)
The average Joe is angry. This is trouble for incumbents. The president makes a fool of himself. This brings opprobrium to the GOP, to Washington, to state houses... The USA is no longer regarded as the bastion of freedom. We have regressed. We have the leadership we deserve. Suggested readings... Hillbilly Elegy by J D Vance... White Trash by Nancy Isenberg,
