What Are Your Predictions for 2018?

I have always been a believer in the saying that you make your way in the world and that nothing is going to be handed to you. So with that in mind i feel as if 2018 is going to be a great year for a multitude of things, ranging from stocks to sports to everything in between. And this is because i feel that America as a people are more motivated then ever to grow and flourish. You can see it all over the place. Success stories of people rising up from negative surroundings. Businesses being born out of a dream and a work ethic. Motivational speakers reaching more and more individuals across the US. The want to achieve greatness is everywhere and everyone wants a taste of it. Analyzing a specific item i really think is going to flourish is sports. I cannot count the amount of times i have witnessed someone become an absolute animal at what they are doing just because they want it. People say that millennials today are entitled and want to have everything handed to them, but i see just the opposite. I see people getting up and doing something about a problem because they know nobody else will and they know that is they want to be successful in this world they are gonna have to work their tail ends off for it.

I don't think you should "predict" the year you're going to have. simply because you are setting a standard for yourself and restricting yourself or over projecting yourself. you as a person are not going to give yourself room to grow and experience the best in the year with a negative attitude but also with a "this is my year" attitude. its no one's year. its just your life. its another day another hour another second. you are moving forward, getting older, becoming more experienced learning more with each day and stepping farther than before. you are becoming stronger with each step and each breath. but society is always viewed so negatively that they never think about that. it always reflecting on the negative instead of simply stating you had a struggle you focus on the struggle and not the way you overcame it. so yes I don't agree with restrictions

2018 will be a year of great change, not necessarily for the best. China will expand even further into the south china sea, inciting conflicts with ASEAN member states. Russia will gain more influence in Venezuela, Syria, and Hungary. South Korea and North Korea will engage in diplomatic ties and will start to create economic ties too. Taiwan will be invaded by China. Hong Kong and the Uighurs will petition for separate independence movements from mainland China. Great Britain's EU negotiations will flop and they’ll engage in economic ties with the EU but with less of an advantage. The war in Syria will end but Assad will win it. Turkey will declare war on Syria further plunging Southwest Asia into war. Yemen and Cape Town will run out of potable water and will be ignored by the world. The NRA will retaliate with physical force to protests outside their headquarters. The United States will return to a form of isolation from the rest of world leaving a power vacuum in the world that will be filled by Germany or Russia. Angela Merkel will be assasinated by Russian spies. The Arab world will unite against Israel and declare war on the country. Pakistan and India will engage in diplomatic relations in an attempt to reduce China's influence. Japan and South Korea will become best of friends and Japan will try to play nice with North Korea. In short 2018 will be a year filled with conflict and strife for the world. The Washington Post is right, democracy dies in darkness

I'd love to say all of the wonderful things I believe are going to change in 2018, but I don't see that much progress this year. No matter how Trump angers people, I would be surprised if he is impeached. The only change I see in our near future is climate change. Even though I am not optimistic for big advancements in 2018, we still need to strive for change in the little things. My generation has been called the most diverse and inclusive generation yet. I believe we need to be the change we want to see in the world, even if that doesn't happen in 2018. With each new generation, society as a whole is steadily becoming more inclusive and diverse. Change will come, it's inevitable.

for 2018 probably every thing will stay be the same and that people all around the world will still be the same
Clee (Silicon Valley)
Nothing’s going to change. Everyday, there is going to be a daily stream of Trump hate, and the stock market will stay at its relatively stable growth rate. Everyday, I’m going to wake up a little older and hopefully a little wiser, staring at the new same day in front of me. Everyday, random memes are going to pop and make my day brighter. Everyday, North Korea is going to have a rocket test, but never will fire a missile at anyone. And everyday, twitter is going to be filled with hate responding what else our president has posted.

I'm hoping to see more promising events to occur in 2018. I'd love to live on a planet where people just got along, without any oppositions or conflicts. I wish for the Israelis and Palestinians to reach neutral ground, for North and South Korea to be friendly (already starting to happen, by the way. They opened up the only phone line between the countries and started making peace talks.), and for America to not be the ONLY country in the entire planet to not have signed the Paris Accord. But realistically, none of that are going to happen (except for the Korea one). In the field of the sciences, In every century, there's a huge boom in some scientific field. For our grandparents in the 20th century, it was in physics, with the invention of flight and commercial airlines. For us in the 21st Century, the knowledge boom is in the life sciences. Without question, we believe in facts such as some diseases are incurable, and that one in five of us are going to be victims of cancer. This won't be true in the near future.

I don't have any predictions on me but I do have a significant birthday coming up for me this year. My 15th birthday. And 15 is the year you can get a learner's permit for driving. :D

Some of my predictions for 2018 consist of conspiracy theories. I have many thoughts about what tragedies will happen with Trump as president. One of my main predictions for this year, is constant argument with Korea. Discussion on politics are getting stronger.

The article "The Most Vexing Unanswered Questions of 2017" takes a stab at answering some of the most controversial issues right now in our world, including questions about protests, politics, and even music. The writers do this in a fun way by breaking each segment up and providing a description about each topic. For an example, in the middle of a few serious questions, one question asks, "Was this the year of Cardi?" The writer uses a short and to the point syntactical structure to prove that yes this was the year of Cardi. She starts off by talking about how one of Cardi's hit songs caused a sense of togetherness in the middle of NYC where everyone dropped the serious act just to have a little fun with each other. At one point the writer says, "In a year of nonstop bad news, Cardi freed us." This short exaggerating sentence not only emphasizes the writer's answer to the question but it also allows readers to see that this song was used as an outlet from a world full of separation for everyone who listens to it. Just watch the video that is hyperlinked in the article. I believe that using music as an outlet to bring people together is going to rise in 2018 because we already see how some musical artists are using their platform to bring everyone together, but the end of hate and separation is not here yet, so I feel like some singers are going to be focused on giving fun, edgy, down to earth kind of songs to us where everyone can listen to them without a care in the world.

How is Olin Kaepernick still a free agent? In this part of the article, “The Most Vexing Unanswered Questions of 2017” it explains how the 30 year old quarter back remains unsigned as a player for the 49ers. HE is most famous for the #TakeAKnee movement during his season. Aaron Rodgers says, “I think he should be on a roster right now, I think because of his protests he’s not.” I agree with this whole heartedly because why should a team manager get to essentially ‘unsign’ someone off their team because of a movement he believed in? It’s simply not fair, “in a league that has often overlooked domestic violence, animal cruelty, steroid use and vehicular manslaughter all in the name of talent, it is curious that Kaepernick was shown the door for a demonstration that did not violate any rules.” This quote could not be any more accurate, there have been so many other issues with football players, much more serious then this, and they have just been brushed off like it was nothing. There have been many unanswered questions of 2017, but according to the article, this is not one of them.

The Future is ... Purple By Vanessa Friedman | DEC. 7, 2017 The tone of this article overall is very skeptical. While this author could've chosen this topic to be inspiring and uplifting, the rhetorical devices used to build this tone combat the few lines of inspiration. The author starts with an already doubtful piece in the title. The title, "The future is ... purple" applies an ellipsis to put emphasis on a pause, mirroring when someone may take a moment to read something particularly shocking or off-putting, This title puts the reader into the skeptical mindset of the author before the article has even begun. The author continues to build this tone throughout their piece. The first paragraph list many dark, sully colors that describe 2017, including black and blood-red burgundy. This imagery of dark colora and the connotation between 2017 already builds a bias in the reader's mind. Once you imagine this dark imagery for 2018, and have built the connections as to why, it is hard to escape this mindset pre-determined by the author. The author continues to add negative or ill-fitting connotation through imagery, only causing more confusion and doubt in this choice. While this article could've simply been informative, or possibly even hopeful, it is clear to see through this article that the author has very little to no hope for 2018 after the rough years we have been expiring.

With Shifts in National Mood Come Shifts in Words We Use, Study Suggests By Steph Yin The author, Steph Yin, describes in a very didactic manner how societies use of positive and negative words seem to be correlated with the current situation of the world around them. Yin explains how some words begin to change their meaning and in some cases, change the connotation from a word that is usually associated in a positive sense to one that is more negative and dark. The author also concludes that people are generally more happy and view things in a more positive light rather than negatively. The following quote gives evidence to this conclusion, "Maybe we inherently privilege positive information. Maybe, optimistically, more good things than bad things happen overall, and the words we use reflect that". This statement by Yin shows how one's tendency in society to have a more uplifting and positive vocabulary all may be the result of people overall experiencing better things than unfortunate ones and appreciating this. This article gives a good description and explanation, through credibility and logic, as to why our vocabulary may change depending on current events and society's overall mood.

The article, "Are High Heels Headed for a Tumble" by Bonnie Wertheim, alludes to the end of the high heel fashion trend regarding women's wear by using examples, and the roles of stereotypes to explain a still new idea to females everywhere. The article begins with a story about a mother who wants to create a more "stereotype free" world for her daughter by denoting the high heel as the shoe symbol for women. To do this, she has sent in a proposal for a ballet flat emoji and is on the waiting list as of late. The author goes on to inspect both sides, along with give a brief history on high heels, but ends with a quote by Florie Hutchinson regarding the same message she began the piece with, “You can look at the flat shoe and say that was the year women decided to find their voice and collectively protest gender-stereotypical norms." With the circular structure of the article, held up by the many examples given throughout to be seen as a tug of war against both sides, the main message is to throw away the idea of stereotypes, one emoji at a time.

The year of 2018 will be a year we won’t forget. There will be many new inventions, ideas, and decisions made. I do firmly believe that for the political side, there will be many new decisions leading to advancement and success in our country. In the year of 2017, many controversial political issues broke out, for an example taking a knee in the NFL for the National Anthem. Controversies like those need to be ruled out in 2018. What I am scared for in 2018 is Trump leading our country in a bad direction resulting in very non peaceful outbreaks. With this in mind, new laws protecting minority groups and other groups such as LGBTQ will ascend as our society advances.
Antonia Dougherty (Delaware)
This article, “The Most Vexing Unanswered Questions of 2017” answers the many questions of 2017 that we thought we could not answer. One of the questions that seemed unanswered to me was if the Russians influenced the election. The article claims were a declassified report that Putin ordered a campaign to influence voters to change their mind. People are subject to change their minds, so this could have or couldn’t have affected the election. Another interesting question was if it was crazy to start to prepare for the apocalypse. My family doesn’t prepare for the apocalypse because I have never really brought it up. But there are scenarios that could happen like wildfires, nuclear threats, or an economic collapse. So, it really isn’t crazy to prepare for the apocalypse because there were many outbreaks of wildfires in 2017. There were lots of questions about 2017 that seemed they could not be answered, but this article shows they can.
Sean Harris (North Carolina)
I feel that 2018 will be a very interesting year in the political world because the US will have to make decisions on problems that no one has ever had to deal with before. For example, politics is playing a bigger role in sports than ever. Issues like taking a knee during the national anthem may need to be resolved on a legal level. Also, as technology continues to make communication even easier, more and more aspects of people's lives will be exclusively online, instead of in person. This includes people’s jobs, school, friends, and maybe even love life. As well as linking people together, technology will continually make us safer. The thing I look forward to most in this regard is self-driving cars.

There are many risks when drinking alcohol and everyone should acknowledge these risks, especially when it can causes a disease so serious as cancer. Alcohol can be seen to be one of the underlying causes of why someone has obtained cancer because it almost doubles your chances of exposure. Roni Rabin writes “The formation of acetaldehyde starts when alcohol comes in contact with bacteria in the mouth, which may explain the link between alcohol and cancers of the throat, voice box and esophagus, she suggested.” Because there are traces between alcohol and cancer, this makes it a main reason for why someone may have cancer. Overall, the connection between alcohol and cancer are seen to be dependent on each other, which can cause a growing amount of research in the coming years on weather or not alcohol truly has a strong effect on people's chances of getting diagnosed with cancer.

Making predictions can be difficult especially when there are endless possibilities of what the new year could bring. My predictions for 2018 include President Trump starting to build the wall he has talked about from the start of his presidency. I predict there are going to be a lot of people upset about him going through with the building of the wall causing fighting to happen. I also predict that 2018 will continue to introduce new crazy fashion styles. I can’t say I will wear any of those crazy styles myself, but it will be interesting to see what they are. A new year means lots of new things, and I am very excited to see what 2018 will have in store.

Comment: One year ago, a significant amount of people were suggesting Earth’s end due to an unconventional US president, turmoil in the Middle East, never ending threats from North Korea, and much more. But our world survived. Just like last year, the world as we know it in January will be different than the world in December. After experts were far off from last year’s outcomes, what exactly should we expect? Should we contemplate Earth’s end once more? Personally, I expect a leap forward for women, whether written in law or experienced in small domestic situations. I believe that discrimination as a whole declines even with efforts to build a wall, put travel bans into motion, etc. I believe Congress will pass more bipartisan agreements, slightly stricter gun control, and overall, fewer laws than last year (but still a big amount). Additionally, I expect a regression from the sheer destruction caused by storms in 2017, but I think wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and much more will endanger and even take the lives of many people. Nonetheless, despite all the problems that will come in many forms trying to overwhelm our world along with the 55.3 million people that die each year according to howmanyarethere.us, the Earth will keep turning for many years to come. And I believe that as fact.

The year, 2017, was filled with natural disasters, racial violence, women being sexually harassed, and rising tensions between multiple nations around the globe. Many people have lost family members and friends from bombings, shootings, terrorist attacks, hurricanes, wildfires, and so much more. As people look back on this year, many will not be able to forget it but for bad reasons more than good. In 2018, I expect to see a lot of issues from 2017 carrying over and new problems surfacing. I will find it interesting to see how the Trump Administration handles these grievances over the year. I see that this year will be a year where we will see America divide more due to midterm elections. This year will be a year where women speak up against oppression and sexual harassment. The tensions between North Korea and the United States will rise, but I do not see anything happening that would affect our day to day life. Putin is up for reelection, and I predict that he will win due to popularity. This year seems to be a year that will be similar to 2017 but unique as it always seems to be.
Naomi Smith (Arkansas)
In the year of 2018, I think that Americans will have to search twice as hard for the real information. The news is so biased, that they often don't report on the important things we should be aware of. because of this, I think that the year is going to be worse than last year. The U.S. will probably get involved in a war on the basis of terrorism. I also think that the current administration will do everything in its power to undo every piece of legislation of the last administration. Maybe someone will figure out the Russia thing. I also think that Kylie is pregnant and Tyga is the father, that's the tea.
Sophia Johnson (El Dorado n stuff)
Democrats in the midterms are going to dominate based on the Republican part's image to the people..however i believe that the climate in the united states is going to simply get worse and very possibly come to a head in 2018. In terms of the #MeToo movement, it will shine a light on sexual harassment and spread across different work spaces maybe even places like the military. The scandals of 2017 wont be going away anytime soon, the White House and the Russia investigation is not faring well, as well as the sexual assault and harassment claims against our President, not to mention Trump and his shifty opinion on white supremacy. These will all be leading to a head and outcomes will either be surprising or very much expected.
Lucas Mason (El Dorado, AR)
I believe that the democratic party will begin to overtake congress in 2018. This is shown by the gradual increase of democratic representation in congress. As a result, this growing of democratic power will play a large part in the midterm elections, as President Trump will lose more followers and backing. I also believe that terrorism around the world will not slow, but more than likely increase as long as the well known terrorist groups are still as powerful as they are now. In the world's current state, however, the terrorist groups are allied with too many other nations that if one country were to attack them it would set off a chain reaction leading to a world war.
Emma Robinson (Arkansas)
I think that there will have to be a rise in bipartisanship within the U.S. Government for progress to be made. I also believe that the democrats will continue on their momentum and win many of the mid-term elections. I also believe that tensions between the U.S. and North Korea will continue to increase. I also believe that there will be a continuous concern for the progression of global warming, but President Trump will not address it. For pop culture, however, I believe that the Kardashians are teasing their followers about Kylie's pregnancy.
Bekah Dodson (Arkansas)
As 2018 starts to unfold before the world, I believe this year will bring in great change, but it is fifty-fifty on whether the changes that occur will be negative or positive. As midterms roll around, I believe that it is very likely that Democrats can become widely elected across the nation. There is a vital and strong women's movement gaining momentum as the year progresses and I believe the youth will start to become more involved in what happens to their world through means of peaceful action and by using their voices to stand up for what they believe in. Science is making new and life saving observations that can help not only Americans, but all of humanity. I think this is a wonderful year for movies as well considering Incredibles II is coming out and that should make everyone's 2018 spectacular.
KJ (El Dorado, Arkansas)
2017 was a year to remember. There were a lot of events that have raised questions caused tensions to rise. With trump being elected there has become a great division within the country. He has also started rising conflicts with other nations most notably North Korea. Now that it is 2018, I believe things can get better. Now that we have went through a entire year with the way things have ran, people will wake up and begin to take a stand in what they believe. Both parties of congress will start to work together to some extent because the president is somewhat against his own party. I think we will start to see a lot more states that are usually red will start to tip blue or at least not be as red. The House will become split after the midterms. I believe many of the social issues such as taking a knee and the me too movement will only continue. I do believe however if the movement continues we will have more and more people become against it because it is starting to take the form of a witch hunt. Countries will try to find better ways to crackdown on terrorist. As for the Korea missile crises, I believe that it is very likely that Russia will try to step in and force the situation. That is if Putin wins his next election which I think he could lose. If he does win it will be a close one. In the world of sports, I believe the Saints will win the Superbowl, Arkansas the college mens baseball championship, and the Boston Celtics the 2018 NBA Finals.
Caroline (Arkansas)
In 2018 I predict terrorist attacks and hate crimes will continue happening all over America. However, I predict new laws protecting minority groups and other groups such as LGBTQ will arise as our society progresses. I think Trump will continuously crack down on immigration laws so we regulate the amount of illegal immigrants entering the country. The economy will continue to grow, but the debt might also continue to increase. There will still be talk of war.
Caleb Wallace (Old Union)
In the year 2018 i predict conflicts will come to nothing less then a memory as we go through the process to get rid of Donald Trump and get someone in office who can handle bushiness without using the teachings of the old way to influence their job.
Lauren Brown (Arkansas)
I believe that 2018 will bring more tension between the Republican and Democratic parties as they struggle for control. I believe that the Democratic party will continue to try to gain more control over the Republican party, but I believe that the Republican party will remain in control because they have such a strong hold over congress and the senate. I believe that there will be more terrorist attacks, mass shootings, and discriminatory acts because of the tensions America has with places such as North Korea and the Middle East. People are not educated and believe what they see on social media. On that note, I also believe social media will have a growing impact on politics and the way people think. Fake news will increase. People will also continue to spread their ideas and their opinions. 2018 will be a good year for movies, music, and entertainment considering considering talk and media of long awaited movies and music.
Cameron Poole (Arkansas )
In 2018, I think that Trump may do some things that please some people and make others angry, just like he did in 2017. I think the democrats trying to work with republicans in the senate will make tension grow between the two. I think more racial issues will come about during this year just like so many did in 2017. I also think there will be many new fashion trends set by celebrities.
Cameron (Arkansas)
In this next year, I think bipartisanship will increase as it is necessary. I predict that Democrats will take Congress in midterm elections, although voters will be pretty split. In an increasingly polarizing political world, tensions between parties will increase and as a result, more gridlock. However, I do think that in the future bipartisanship will increase, mainly because there is little now. There will be a lot of compromises between parties, and in turn a lot of unhappy citizens.
Jarius Curry (El Dorado Arkansas)
I think in the year of 2018 Donald Trump will continue to build bad blood with foreign countries and will also cause america to go into debt with his new tax plan. I also think it will be much harder now to pass a bill as a republican because democrats are the front runners to take over the house. I also think there will be more strict laws put in place due to all the mass shootings we had in 2017.
Nathan Harbour (Arkansas)
Some of what I can predict for 2018 with a small degree of confidence is that Trump will make more progress in 2018 with some support he may gain after some of the recent bills. The tax bill will surely help raise public support for him as about 80% of Americans stand to directly gain from tax breaks as well as corporate tax rate being lowered from the highest in the industrialized world to one comparable to European countries will see the economy grow and raises for many people to rise. Not to mention that the fight for $15 will be gained by many people as a result of corporations having more money to spend. Whether or not Trump will get his wall is questionable as it has to do with spending and illegal immigration has slowed down significantly under his administration. I don't believe that Trump will stop with the rhetoric that makes many people dislike him as that seems to be part of his character and one of the biggest flaws in his presidency when addressing issues. The sexual assault allegations will also likely slow down after some time as I think most of the Harvey Einstein controversy has died down in the public and the large amount of allegations that don't have much if any evidence to support them and even evidence drawing the allegations in question and aren't taken to the authorities that are sadly deluding actual cases where sexual assault occurs and may thus drop the amount of allegations. Terrorist attacks will also likely happen worldwide as well.
Richa Dudhia (Arkansas)
For the upcoming year 2018, I think many controversial issues on sexual harassment will gain more attention. I hope the #TakeAKnee movement will gain further attention and people should recognize it as a strong protest against the unfair decisions of the government. The recent attacks and violence on our citizens using various vehicles may continue to occur which will be the negative side of 2018. Without any doubt, I am sure there will be a controversy over the new tax bill and new healthcare reform. Currently, the feminist movement is gaining a lot of attention and I believe there’s more hope for the women. I am highly doubtful of DACA getting passed. I hope North Korea and US will compromise because I fear the upcoming tensions of war. I think the power of Republicans will increase in 2018.
Zee Smith (Arkansas)
In 2017, we experienced many things that some wouldn't think would happen; we got an interesting president, wildfires in California, hurricanes were everywhere, riots, etc. It was a lot. In 2018, I predict that our current President will up his game and start making a difference for the people and not just himself. If he doesn't, there's a huge possibility that he'll be impeached. I also predict that the #metoo movement will gain lots of support and hopefully more women, and men too, will begin to speak out. I also predict that the New Orleans Saints will go to the Super Bowl.
Calvin Walker (El Dorado, AR)
I think 2018 will be a year full of disagreement and conflict in our government and country. I feel like Trump will continue to lead our country in a direction that won't benefit us. I also believe that we will go into further debt.
Brooklynn Price (Arkansas)
For 2018, I predict that like 2017 many scandals will continue to surface as the parties fight to gain power over one another in anyway possible. It would also seem likely that President Trump will carry on with his wild and controversial tweets that call out fake news and North Korea. The issue faced with that though is, people are continuously becoming more and more desensitized to the words he is writing on the internet. The controversy that first arose over his tweets has started to diminish and soon enough his cries of going to war and his jokes on climate change will only be seen in the form of internet mockery. The public slowly but surely will take him less seriously, if the even did in the first place. The idea of gaining bipartisanship is far fetched it would seem and Democrats seem to be fired up about gaining control after the huge loss they saw in 2016. As they began to make gain in 2017 with wins, I believe this fire within the party will continue on into 2018 with them pushing to take control of small local government all the way up to the Senate and the House.
Mikayla Morris (El Dorado ,AR)
The year 2018 will just be another year that the country continues to sink into debt and become more sexist and racist , thanks to our president. The dreamers and the LGBTQ community will live in fear. The white supremacists will gain more power. Terrorist will continue to attack and people will fear/ hate Muslims because of ignorance. There most likely be a nuclear war or at the very least some kind of war, but we will probably also gain allies. All of the bad things that will mostly happen will help build the U.S. sense of citizenship, patriotism , and unity. The gap between the rich and poor will widen and the economy will go through a hard time, but hopefully republicans and democrats can start agreeing on things so the government doesn't shut down.
Shania Arnold (Arkansas)
I feel as though 2018 will be a continuation of past problems with the same issues occurring with no change. I feel that without cooperation from our bipartisan government, that there will no longer be a bipartisan government. I think racial issues will definitely be problems for years and years to come and without proper acknowledgement and/or condemnation of racist ideas that our nation will never get anywhere. I feel as though DACA will be reinstated and that Trump will face trouble with more immigration policies.
Nate Minchew (El Dorado, AR)
Personally i believe that 2018 will coincide directly with the events of 2017. The now President of the United States has caused great hostility to arise within the people of America, and with that hostility came violence. America saw its deadliest mass shooting in history, Texas saw its deadliest shooting as well. These things while not directly related to the President can inevitably probably be tied back to the country's reaction as a whole. Now America is more racist than ever while not as public as it used to be citizens have found new ways to display prejudice against one another. Also very little political progress will be made due to the split senate and the house not having a vast majority either side. so the government will be at a stand still, the nation's citizens are unhappy with the current situation and with all that we have an argument between political leaders of countries over who's tougher and who's "button is bigger". Also if Trump follows through with the repeal of DACA then it has been predicted that the economy will take a hit. The country is gnashing its teeth at each other and not much is being done in order to sustain the "American Image".

In 2018, the controversy that surrounded 2017 will begin to simmer down, and probably filled with more controversy of another sort. It more than likely won't be all bad though. Leaving 2017, the economy was on the rise and the new Republican tax bill should help to continue this increase. Of course there will have to be more Republicans willing to work with members of other parties because the tax bill was one of the controversies of 2017, so Republicans might have to give the Democrats something in return if they wish to get anything done. With a Republican majority, and a midterm that threatening this, one could expect that congress will be rushing to get more legislature that is tougher on immigration, and less funding for certain social programs. This year began with North Korea opening back up communications with South Korea, one could expect tensions to ease somewhat.

In 2018, I predict that this year is only going to be worst than 2017. I feel like our President isn't going to do any better than what he's already doing. I think while he's in offices our economics is going to keep go down. I feel like Trump not going to try to fix any of our major issues that we're dealing with as a country. As far as culture, the arts, fashion and style is going to be a beautiful thing to see this year. In 2017, Every thing was coming together. Everyone was enjoying the different styles and arts. I predict that in 2018 more people are going to want to know more about other peoples culture. I feel like that 2018 will be a good year & I predict that there will not be so much violence this year. I predict that the Golden State Warriors will win another NBA Champion Ring.

I predict 2018 will carry on many of the problems 2017 held. I believe many of the sexual harassment cases will contain to gain attention and hope there will be less of them in 2018. Without a doubt, there will be controversy of some sort whether it is caused by President Trump or because of some other politician, it is bound to happen. I do not think the email scandal with Mrs. Clinton will be resolved as it has been widely debated for many years and not much progress has been made, I think it will continue to drag out until 2019. I think 2018 will be a big year for women however, the feminist movement is continually gaining momentum and I think there is a lot in store for them. I fear tensions with North Korea will grow and may cause a war, I am not certain a war will erupt but I am positive the tensions will increase. Tensions in the Middle East will increase and while I certainly hope not, terror attacks will continue. We saw many attacks in 2017 and unfortunately 2018 will probably see some as well. Lastly, regarding pop culture, I think Kylie Jenner will announce she is pregnant and Logan Paul will not learn his lesson.
Kenneth Hall (El Dorado, Ar)
In 2017, we witnessed the climax of tensions between anti-fascist and the alt-right. I predict that 2018 will be the year that divisions between economic classes will intensify. Our debt will continue to build up as a result of Trump's tax breaks, but our nation's economy will continue to prosper
Quinn (El Dorado Arkansas)
For the present year of 2018 I predict that current President Trump will continue his ways from 2017 and lead our country into multiple conflicts. The country will go further into debt. Also Jordan's will continue to become less and less popular.
Sally Senn (Arkansas )
I think that in the year of 2018 bipartisanship in the senate will continue to grow and that the democrats will continue to gain momentum. It is also my prediction that in the following year the #metoo movement will continue to gain support and participation and that more sexual harassment cases will come to light. Along with this i predict that their will be more mass shootings and more racist acts.

For the year of 2018, I predict that predictions will become the greatest waste of time and effort, the world will ever spend their time on. Let’s face it, predicting events in the upcoming year is some tricky stuff. After reading the opinionated article, “When Forecasters Get It Wrong: Always”, I learned that the chance of predicting events in a year to come, is close to slim or none. There will always be obstacles in the way to a correct prediction, like presidents with hopes of big change or even political biases can mess up the job of a predictor. These two obstacles were indeed the very two that messed up the predictions for the year 2018, so why keep predicting? Yes, one may strike rich if they somehow make the right guess, but I think we have the power and will to do more than just predict to make money. Instead of predicting or hoping the economy will rise due to president Trump, let's actually try and make this idea a reality. I don’t exactly have a plan or idea on how to accomplish this, but I sure know that predicting and talking about change does absolutely nothing. We as people, need to do more than predict, we need to do more than just talk, we need to act. And 2018 sure is a good time for some change in action, it is well needed.
Hee Yun Chung (California)
In 2018, I predict that President Trump will continue to act the same as 2017. The world is going to have to endure more facepalm worthy tweets that may or may not incite an international schism. With 2018 and Trump comes the rise of even more toxic political debates between the left and the right, repeal of laws that help the American people, and more street protests. As for the world, 2018 will have its fair share of terrorist attacks along with other international crises like natural disasters, war, and famine. 2018 will essentially be a more brutal or equivalent of 2017. However, on the positive side, there is room for acts of kindness and exploration of space. I expect that tech companies like Space X will continue venturing into space while new gadgets and fun products get released in the market. Another positive would be the Olympic Games in PyeongChang in South Korea. For the first time in a few years, nations can put aside differences and tensions to play a friendly match of winter-themed games. Currently, we can't be sure what will exactly go on and no one can know if 2018 was good or not until 2019 peeks around the corner. However, I do have my doubts that this year would be any better than the previous years we all had to go through.

(continued) Being that our president right now is one of the most controversial that we have ever had, I feel that it is definitely very important to have a bipartisan government. “Republicans want to be able to present themselves as reasonable and responsible,” according to the article. I believe both parties need to do this if they want to be able to cooperate efficiently. One of my biggest hopes for 2018 is that people become more open minded. Before judging a person on the side of the road for holding a sign asking for a little food or help and assuming that if they had worked harder in school, they wouldn’t be there, and that it is their own fault, put yourself in their shoes. This goes for so many things, from being transgender to an illegal immigrant, put yourself in their shoes before you draw conclusions based on what you see from the outside. As Atticus Finch said in the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
Emily Ball (Wilmington, NC)
2017 was a year of good and bad. As we start 2018, we look back upon 2017 and ponder all of the ways that it could have been better, and the ways in which it held valuable lessons. Questions such as "Are dogs smarter than cats?" were able to really be answered, but there were other questions that weren't answered. These questions range in seriousness from "Did the Russians really influence the 2016 Presidential election?" to more nihil ad rem questions such as "What makes a man sexy?" I sincerely hope that 2018 is a progressive year in all aspects including political topics, technology, fashion, and others. When reading the article on culture and the questions that are still to be answered in 2018, I came across one that caught my attention. It asked, “Are there any good men left?” I considered this question before reading the provided information below. I came up with that although some men are definitely not good people, there are still a great deal of men who are fantastic, well-rounded people. 2017 was a year of women coming forth with accusations of sexual assault against men. One of the most notorious of the men accused was Harvey Weinstein. I feel that these women coming forward is a big step for women, because speaking out against a powerful man is not always easy. Women are not the only gender affected by sexual assault though, and I hope that 2018 is a year of advancement and justice for boys and men that have been affected by sexual assault, as well as women.
Derek Moore (Aruba)
2017 was a year overcome by an overwhelming blanket of controversy and violence. However, it is possible that some of this could be resolved in 2018, especially with the formation of improved policies around the world to hinder gun violence, drug abuse, and terrorism. Furthermore, the people of the United States have been hiding under their desks in fear of a nuclear attack or getting hacked. I predict that in 2018, the Russia investigation on the hacking in the 2016 election that had plagued the nation for the past year will be progressed upon, and the United States will become a more secure nation as a whole. Along with the booming economy, this development could bring America to a state of enhanced greatness and prosperity. Although there is still a lingering issue with “Rocket Man” in North Korea, hopefully there will be a continuation of the six-party talks or some form of bilateral treaty with the aggressive nation that will leave countless countries feeling much more secure. Outside of politics, there will most likely be major changes in the world of entertainment. With widespread debate over national anthem protests in leagues such as the NFL, there will most likely be a shift in viewership of this sport, to other leagues such as the NBA or the NHL. This was mildly evident during this football season, but more viewers will most likely return to watch the upcoming playoffs, and the New England Patriots winning another championship.
Chloe Raesly (Danvers, Massachusetts)
2017 has been a very eventful year. Our country has experienced many catastrophes that range from political to economic. Politically, our country has elected a man who is hated by most. There has been a large variety of national disasters along with global and local ones. I predict that 2018 will not be much different than 2017 regarding these issues. For example, I believe that since the minimum wage increase, small businesses are going to be greatly effected. In order pay their employees, small businesses will have to increase their prices so that they will still be bringing the same amount of money into their business. Additionally, social media shows how people nowadays especially children will believe anything they see. This will negatively affect the minds of our youth as it has already done in some situations in 2017. 2017 was a year of unpredictability. We could not predict they various terrorist attacks, along with the hurricanes and the forest fires. I believe the 2018 will also be a year of unpredictability. There is no way of knowing what will come next. Positively, fashion and trends will continue to increase and change. Maybe there will be a fashion breakthrough. We will just have to wait and see. The world is constantly changing around us and there is no way of knowing what will follow next, like a story book. I guess we'll just have to keep turning those story book pages in order to see what will happen next, positive or negative.
Julia Broderick (Danvers, MA)
I hope that in 2018 the world will grow. I hope that people will learn, that the constant struggle under the weight of negativity starts to lessen. I hope that somewhere in the world, at least one person finds happiness because even the smallest of changes can set the Earth on the right track. I hope for peace, yes I know it sounds cliche, but I would rather not have another war go down into the history textbooks. I hope that each power in the world, whether that be a country, a person, a energy, etc. finds balance and comfort. I hope there is no more struggle, no more greed for power. I hope that things take a turn for the better instead of constantly spiraling downward. I know that these hopes are a stretch, that many are not attainable within a years time. However, cures for new diseases are discovered everyday. Lives are saved every second. It is possible for change, positive change, to happen in the world. So, in 2018 I hope for positive change. No matter how small, no matter how minuscule they may seem.
Kevin Jordan (Danvers, MA)
2017 was a very volatile year in politics, economics, and life in general. Donald Trump shocked the political establishment with his victory over Hillary Clinton. In the past several months, the United States has suffered many hurricanes and dangerous wildfires in California. A U.S. president has spent more time attacking people who insult him on social media than actually doing his job. The events of the past year were very chaotic. Can we expect 2018 to be any more predictable? The election of Donald Trump shoes the effects of populism in politics in the modern era. Furthermore, reality television shows and social media dominate the minds of our youth. With this mass media culture, it is inevitable that many people believe everything they read on the internet, even absurd conspiracy theories, like Kyrie Irving’s flat earth belief. All we can predict about 2018 is that it too will be very unpredictable. The only difference is that we will notice it less because we have become accustomed to craziness in our lives.
Lauren Clement (Massachusetts)
Our world in general will not change in 2018. The idea of 2018 being a new year is just a label. Even though the new year seems like the epitome of all things change, nothing ever does. I predict there will be just as much if not more conflict. As for U.S. politics, I believe Donald Trump will further his border wall agenda and attacks against other countries. I believe the economy will continue to improve as it has, and stocks will continue to rise. Fashion will continue be increasingly edgy and our culture, will continue to be rivaled by racism, bigotry, and societal conformity. As for my family and loved one’s I hope they have a happy, safe year and I wish for academic and athletic success for myself.
Samman Naz (Massachusetts)
I predict that 2018 will be no better than 2017. There have been so many countless global, national, and local disasters in 2017, that they can not be recovered by 2018 or possibly even 2019. In fact, such disasters will continue to pile on to the existing ones and eventually there will be more than we can bare and shortly after, there will be nuclear war and an extinction the human race. I am only predicting extreme circumstance because after what 2017 left us with, going to extreme measures is the only way we can prepare for what 2018 holds for us. I mean think about it. We put a racist businessman who has no logical knowledge on how to be a leader in charge of our nation. How can I not predict that there will be a nuclear war? But that is only my political predictions for 2018. As for economic predictions, I can honestly say I don’t know. Finally, the future for the realms of culture, arts, fashion, and style is looking bright. Despite all of the political and economic dilemmas that will go on, I feel like culture, arts, etc. will truly flourish because I’ve noticed in 2017, that people began to embrace their love for different cultures and arts and I think it will continue like that in 2018. But, in the end, the bad overshadows the good and despite such improvements in the arts and culture, the political issues will rise higher. But, these are only my predictions. Maybe, that won’t happen. Maybe everything will lighten up in 2018. We’ll just have to wait and see.
