No War Threats From Trump, Who Tells Koreans ‘It Will All Work Out’

'We will not allow American cities to be threatened with destruction' he says, while refusing to so much as discuss the plague guns have brought upon those very same cities. What is so wrong about requiring background checks at gun shows? Why do we have to live in a nation ripped apart by assault rifles almost weekly? Why is even discussion of the issue forbidden by gun manufacturers and the corrupt politicians supporting them?
Robin (Portland, OR)
I would be satisfied with Trump's visit to Seoul if I thought he now recognizes that his threats and juvenile insults toward North Korea could result in the death of many of the people he saw as he was whisked here and there in South Korea. Those guards in traditional costumes that escorted his car to the presidential residence? Dead within minutes of North Korea's first missile attack. Koreans who waved signs welcoming him to Seoul? Dead. The children who met with the First Lady? Dead. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of South Koreans dead. Their lives are no less meaningful than those of Americans. Trump and his generals need to truly feel that.
Tom (Pennsylvania)
Trump threatens fire and fury and then says let's make a deal. None of it wil work, and Trump still doesn't get it.. Kim doesn't want war and he doesn't want a deal. He wants the US as an enemy to keep his generals in line, just as his father did. He has far more to fear from a coup than he does from the US.
Uzi (SC)
"NYT headline No War Threats From Trump, Who Tells Koreans ‘It Will All Work Out’" Right! Trump threats nuclear war with NK. Then, he visits SK and makes an offer Seoul cannot refuse. Buy billions of costly US-made advanced weaponry and 'all work out fine." Bottomline: US allies worldwide are on notice about Trump's transactional foreign policy approach. No more free lunches from now on.
William Carlson (Massachusetts)
LOL there is no such thing with Trump. A threat is still a threat no matter how much you change the words.
gratis (Colorado)
Who believes this guy? I doubt the Koreans do. Neither North nor South.
Bella (The city different)
The trump sales pitch to sell weapons is disgusting. He is nothing more than a slimy used car salesman making America great again at others expense by selling more weapons of death. He totally creeps me out.
mary (connecticut)
When abroad, Trumps words are scripted by others and carefully composed. He will mimic these words assuming the appropriate character, one of calm reason, sensibility, and optomisism. Hence; "But if the firsthand experience left an impression on Mr. Trump, he did not show it. At times, his tone was almost blithe. Before being briefed by American and South Korean military commanders, he said of the confrontation with the North: “Ultimately it will all work out. Because it always works out — has to work out.” Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, the American commander, wore a grim expression as he listened." Gen. Vincent K. Brook grim expression listening to Trump's unscripted utterance, "it will all work out" left many of us the same. He's a conman. When he arrives back to the safe haven of his home soil, he will claim himself the victor of 'whatever.' A view days will pass and his ungovernable tweets will reveal the true character of our leader. The truth be told, This man who has not a clue what the defines the character of a true leader, a person elected to represent the United States of America. Not a clue. Heaven help us all, again.
Bob (Seattle)
Does anyone consider that the Koreans of both north and south likely do not wish to go, again, to war with one another? It seems more likely that any North Korean aggressive military actions in this conflict will be directed primarily at Japan (first is my guess) at US military bases in South Korea (second) and perhaps at Guam.
Sohrab Batmanglidj (Tehran, Iran)
The Koreans needn't worry, Mr. Trump is not going to do anything drastic, the Chinese can grab all the islands they want, the US will be fine with that as well, not sure what he can offer the Russians, the investigations limit his options, but he can probably think of something. Why have all these issues suddenly become back burner ones? Because Mr. Trump is about to start a war with Iran, the consequences of which he does not comprehend.
Luis (Baltimore, MD)
"Ultimately it will all work out. Because it always works out — has to work out.” Just like in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and... yes, Korea.
Dennis D. (New York City)
It will all work out when Democrats, Independents and semi-sane Republicans turn out in larger percentages than one-half of all eligible voters and remove the Republican majorities in both Houses of Congress. We must return this nation to the days when we dreamed big things, when we did what a great nation did to achieve that greatness. And that was to build up not tear down, to expand governmental services for the needy, not for weapons of war. We must take this nation into the 21st century much as our ancestors took US into the 20th. Good grief, do most Americans realize as a economic power we are doing better than ever? Do they then wonder why the average American does not see the fruits of those labors? And the rewards that come with it? It appears too many have the Republican propaganda that we are in heavy debt, that we can't afford doing great things because we don't have the money. Balderdash. We have the money. The rich have that money, and we need to make them part with that money if we want to achieve greatness again. Who were the leaders we most admire? FDR, JFK, even LBJ except for his atrocious debacle in Vietnam. With Clinton, we had prosperity but little hope from the man from Hope. With Barack, he tried to give US health care, but we could care less. What has happened to America? To go from Obama to Trump? That is a pitiful downfall for the ages. DD Manhattan
D.A.Oh (Middle America)
"The threat of North Korea" has really never existed. Kim seeks relevance and adulation. And he wants to survive. So he is as aware as anyone that all those things come to a definite end if he starts a war. This is why Trump's macho rhetoric has always been more dangerous than productive. But the so-called president can't do anything without causing a spectacle and turning it into all about him.
KPF (Seoul, Korea)
Tell that to the sailors' families of the Cheonan. Do you know what happened to President Park's wife? Do you watch almost all the young men of your country get conscripted? Oh and how does it feel when Trump knows more than you?
Rich (Manhattan)
It will all work out? Like It has for the past 25 years? Kim is a ruthless dictator. He rules over a country that is run like a cult. Thier mantra is death to America. Sensible countries do not want a war, but I do believe terrorist North Korea will continue to blackmail America and its allies. Do we accept them as a nuclear power? Do we let them refine ballistic nuclear missiles? Do we actually allow a few of our cities to disappear in a flash before we react? North Korea, like Iran, are not stable players. Does anyone really think you could reason with terrorist states?
Gene (Fl)
And trump remains blissfully unaware that all the people opposite him in the photo are more intelligent, educated, articulate and capable than him.
Richard Monckton (San Francisco, CA)
Trump treats the South Koreans the way he treats his white rabble constituency, namely assuming they are stupid, blissfully ignorant that the S. Korean people are among the best educated in the world, precisely the opposite of his ignorant white followers in the US. It may come as a surprise to many that, among other contrasts with Trumps ignorant base in the US, where the vast majority reject climate science as a liberal conspiracy, South Koreans rank number one in the World in climate science education in schools. Almost 100 percent of Korean accept climate science, not because they are dogmatic, but because they are educated enough. South Koreans are extremely polite people and they put up with their brutish guest with patience and decorum, something Trump and his mob are utterly unaware of.
That's what she said (California)
Yeah --can you imagine Churchill saying don't worry about Hitler- it will all work out............
GreedRulesUS (Santa Barbara)
What a joke this so-called president is... Does trump actually think ANYONE will take him at his word? I am an American and I would NOT trust him to take out the trash correctly let alone run this nation. What a horrible stain upon our nations history this administration is and the GOP have become.
say what? (NY,NY)
If 'it will all work out' is the best strategy that trump can come up with, I hope to God trump is removed from office before N Korea realizes it really is dealing with a dotard.
Realist (Santa Monica, Ca)
I'm more reassured by Kim Jong-un's rationality and smarts than I am by anything "Kremlin Boy" has to say.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Personally, I would feel better with HIS impersonator, Alec Baldwin, as the Presidential Apprentice. Seriously, try to think of 10 people that would be WORSE than Trump. I really can't. More wine.
Michael B (New Orleans)
While President Moon will undoubtedly be polite, personable and most hospitable to President Trump, he's highly unlikely to buy into Trump's glib but empty promise that "...it will all work out somehow." Trump's approach sounds very much like "pie in the sky, bye and bye." Empty words without detailed substance -- a feasible Plan of Action -- are worthless.
Counter Measures (Old Borough Park, NY)
A true statesman till his next campaign 2020 rally, which will probably take place in two weeks! Wake me up when this is all over.
wsmrer (chengbu)
Pres. Trump walked where the fire and fury will occur -- Seoul Korea – if conflict comes; a Reality Check. Do people and places have any affect on him? Hopefully. Contrary to Japan’s Abe, negotiations with Kim Jong-un are called for but he will not disarm first and maybe never until national security is somehow assured. President Moon could be the unlocking element; Xi too will urge talks on Trump. The alternatives are limited but sanctions useful as filler. Will Trump grow some on this trip East?
Pat Choate (Tucson, Arizona)
Being in the range of North Korean artillery, President Trump was amazingly benign. It must have focused his thinking. Hope the attitude remains when he returns to Washington DC.
Linda (Oklahoma)
Saying "it will all work out" is what a parent tells a kid when the parent doesn't what to talk about it.
Jack T (Alabama)
South Koreans- trump thinks you are as stupid as nearly half of americans. don't believe anything he says. political corruption is illegal in South Korea; it's not in the US. I assume that outright lying is frowned upon in your nation while it is lionized here. My sympathies for being trapped between two vicious fools.
ME (Fairfield CT)
In a 5-min video about North Korea, why not pronounce Nuclear as New-Clee-are, not New-Cue-lar? How hard can this be? Why should anyone believe the content when the makers can't even pronounce the main word right?
Brannon Perkison (Dallas, TX)
For once, Trump said something true! It will certainly "work out." Whether for good or bad remains to be seen. And, yeah, probably he tones it down because he is actually afraid they'll nuke him when he's there. Just wait 'till he returns. There will be "fire and fury," once again.
Chris Hunter (Washington State)
Trump is apparently more determined than ever now to clinch that #1 spot on history's list of stupidest U.S. presidents.
John McGlynn (San Francisco)
How is it I don't feel very reassured?
fast/furious (the new world)
Trump thinks he can threaten nuclear annihilation, insult people and amp up worldwide fear of war for months....and then calm his stupid self down and say "it will all work out." He's unfit to be president and this entire drama - which threatened to engulf the world in nuclear war - is proof. We need to get him out of there before he stupidly oversteps himself and does something tragic or horrifying that he actually has to suffer the consequences for - and the world along with him. He lives in a tv show unreality where he always has the option to change course, spin or simply lie about his intentions or how terrible his mistakes are. That's not the real world. This never stops getting worse. What will it be like in 6 months? In a year? Trump's insane and worse, stupid.
Canuck Lit Lover (British Columbia)
“I don’t want to say that — I just don’t want to say that,” Mr. Trump said. “You can understand.” Seems like someone has been required to write 500 lines of "I will not stick my foot in my mouth" or stand in front of a mirror repeating the same phrase over and over until it is like a needle stuck in a record groove. Thank heaven his handlers realized he cannot be trusted with independent thought or agency half a world away, mere miles (and seconds) from a nuclear launch site. Too bad they believe he can be trusted off leash and free of the muzzle anywhere else - for example, stateside.
Carmen (NYC)
That's what I keep telling myself: "It will all work out"..... We shall survive this ridiculous circus....
Details (California)
Things don't just "always work out". They fall apart. Wars happen. Thousands are killed. This is reality, not fantasy, and it doesn't always work out. Making a blatantly false promise like that, that he has no ability to keep (Trump cannot stop NK from attacking if it chooses to do so) is really stupid.
Pete (Florham Park, NJ)
I believe it was a comment made today on Bloomberg News, where the interviewee said that the foreign heads of state were happy to make Trump look Presidential, and equally happy when he left. They were also happy to not make any commitments to him. But based on the lead-in photograph, a wonderful photo-op trip.
betty sher (Pittsboro, N.C.)
If nothing else accomplished with this LONG Asian trip, at least Melania is able to model all her very new and very expensive clothing! Will it further her as First Lady? or new modeling offers?
maitena (providence, ri)
What gives us the right to say who can have nuclear weapons?
CdRS (Chicago, IL)
Oh come off it! You Trump know zero about what makes the world go round. Take a history class. Better still resign your office, bumbler. We don't want you for president and I'm Republican!
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, CA)
Praying that it all works out works for me.

Am I the only one who thinks China is making a sap out of the POTUS? As long as Rocketman is a threat to the US the Chinese are happy.
June (Sydney)
China is laughing all the way to the bank.
Chico (New Hampshire)
I listen to Trump and whether you compare him to Barrack Obama or even George W. Bush, it's is embarrassing how far our country has fallen in the year since this Buffoon was elected. Donald Trump sounds like an imbecile, always stroking his own ego no matter what the question is that he is asked, he always turns it back to about him.
pap (na)
Ever notice how big he talks when he is half a world away? Once he's in the hemisphere, suddenly he's a kitty-cat. Such a tiny, little man
NaturalGenius (Westchester NY)
Calling POTUS names won't get liberals what they're looking for. Whatever THAT is. Right now nobody knows!!
steve p (korea)
To 'NaturalGenius' from westchesterNY: As a tree-hugging liberal - I can tell you that I am looking for some sanity from the professed bastion of freedom. Instead all I see is insanity. From the moronic tendencies of it's president, down to the voters who believe in him - America is a never-ending farce of hypocrisy, deception, and death. It's got a liar in chief, for whom "facts" are subjective to say the least -- environmental PROTECTION agency chiefs who claim the air is just too clean so we need to add more pollution to make people stronger, happier and healthier - a republican party that has proved it cannot govern - a democratic party that scuppers democracy - mass shooting that somehow are not the result of rampant guns, but instead of mental health issues - etc etc..... Seemingly an apex was reached somewhere around 1960: the fall of Rome part deux seems quite an apt metaphor..... So again: what I am looking for is for America to get it's "act" together before it's too late.
Liberty Apples (Providence)
Undoubtedly, the South Koreans were reassured by the National Embarrassment's words. Something about him just instills confidence.
JWMathews (Sarasota, FL)
So why am I looking skyward?
Ansel Addamson (DC)
Actually you are in much more danger of being shot by a deranged white nationalist with an assault weapon and a bump stock. Chances of that happening are far greater than the chances of North Korea ever coming remotely close to the US with any kind of missile.
steve p (korea)
To: Sarah from N.J The only danger you are in is the one you made for yourselves: You cannot menace country after country and overthrow leaders that don't constantly give in to America's will without having eventual repercussions. In regards to North Korea: For the last 25+ years America has demanded that North Korea cease production of any weapons that could be used to defend itself - and America has done this with the constant threat of overwhelming attack. So in essence: stop trying to defend against a potential American attack or we will be forced to attack... America has placed trillions of dollars worth of the worlds most advanced military hardware and soldiers on North Korea's border (has North Korea done the same to America?). All the while, North Korea has asked over and over for a no strings attached peace treaty with America -- the answer they get each time is: totally disarm before America will even contemplate coming to the negotiation table (does North Korea ask the same to America?). And then more and more crippling sanctions.... This is a farce: for the past 25 years North Korea has been a puny country with a minuscule economy, starving people, and virtually no ability to attack America(until recently) -- America has been the #1 super power with the ability to completely annihilate North Korea. so who really is the aggressor here?
Dennis D. (New York City)
Of course it will all work out, as long as we can prevent Trump from doing anything while in office. Trump's days as president are numbered, and with Le Affaire Russia hanging over his orange head, Trump is for all intents and purposes a lame duck. He will remain in office for some time, but he will be ineffectual. Trump's shtick is wearing thin, while he gets fatter. His sad routine will be the death knell for him and the GOP. Good riddance. DD Manhattan
Mike Edwards (Providence, RI)
President Trump is on, what Mitt Romney would have called, an apology tour. He's apologizing on behalf of NK President, Kim Jong-un. Let's hope it all works out.

Look on the positive side. Every day that passes means one less day Donald Trump will be our President.
Eddie B. (Toronto)
"No worries! It will all work out," said the captain of Titanic, after the ship tilted on one side.

... or we will all get annihilated... Seems like something worth leaving to chance.
mclean4 (washington)
No leaders in Asia take Trump seriously. Trump is trying to show off American muscles but no one cares. Not China and not North Korea. South Korea is developing a better and strong relationship with China's Xi Jinping. America is fighting a loosing battle in Asia after Obama's Pivot to Asia blunder. It probably will take years to rebuild our stronger and trust relations with Asian countries.
Satire & Sarcasm (Maryland)
"Ultimately, it will all work out." Sure it will ... for America. Lindsay Graham has said it's OK if South Korea is destroyed ... just as long as no missiles reach American territory.
Jason Shapiro (Santa Fe , NM)
First it's "little rocket man," then more bluster and [nuclear] jingoism, and now it will "all work out." That man is not merely stupid he is most definitely mentally disturbed. He has no idea what he said last week, or yesterday or ten minutes ago. Come on kids, it's 25th Amendment time - the entire world can see he is insane, why can't Congress?
Betrayus (Hades)
"It will all work out" for Trump Inc only.
susie (florida)
“Ultimately, it will all work out.” Is that going to be the new slogan embroidered onto his next red campaign hat?
Mike (NYC)
This is huge in that it pretty much takes a unilateral attack on North Korea off the table and encourages North Korea to moderate its actions including weapons tests. This should be the headline. Now Kim jong W. Un, the boy-dictator, can go long on some stocks and make some bucks.
winchestereast (usa)
Until Trump forgets that he said it'd all work out and decides to strut his macho self out, again. Well, at least he doesn't want to lock up the gays like Pence. Don't forget to vote. And turn yourself into a pass-through if you plan on keeping your SALT deductions.
EGD (California)
This issue is North Korean nuclear weapons and the threat they pose to the US and its allies but, one year after the election, I remain amazed that Democrats, if this board is representative, simply cannot get over the fact that Donald Trump was elected POTUS. Trump is appalling in so many ways but, to a broad swathe of the electorate, Hillary Clinton is equally appalling in her own duplicitous and venal way. Why you cannot accept that is puzzling. Democrats, thankfully, will remain a coastal and urban party — virtually unelectable nationally — until they come up with viable policies that appeal to the broader public. Ad hominem attacks on him and his supporters, while easy to make and apparently satisfyingly self-validating, get you nowhere close to where you need to be politically.
Eddie B. (Toronto)
No, I don't think the issue is North Korea's nuclear weapons or it is whether the democrats are nationally electable. The North Koreans will never attack us, unless the regime there is given reasons to believe we are about to attack them. The democrats will get elected again, once they get their acts together and come up with ideas that can heal current societal problems. The issue that matters right now is this: by hook or by crook, a mentally unstable man has ended up at the helm of the most powerful military in the history of the world and he is bent on using that military against another country. Apparently, he badly wants to be "a war president" because he thinks that will ensure his second-term election or he believes that allows him to put a stop to any investigation into his Russian connection.
SR (Bronx, NY)
When pressed by a reporter, [covfefe] declined to say whether he still thought negotiations with North Korea would be a waste of time, making an uncharacteristic effort to avoid a remark that might have inflamed tensions. “I don’t want to say that — I just don’t want to say that,” [covfefe] said. “You can understand.” -- In English, that means "Don't interrupt me with facts, 'fake' news guys! I'm trying to spout niceynice malarkey to keep Moon happy until I leave the South Korean border. Otherwise, he'll build a wall around me and make Jared pay for it!"
David Dietrich (Ithaca, NY)

This President has been met by Saudi Arabia, Israel, China and Japan with a much more genuine love than the previous president, and for good reasons. Mr. Obama detested Israel and Saudi favoring Iran and the Shia. The first Lady also has been very much under-reported compared to the fawning by the press of the previous first lady, so childish.

You forgot Russia.
william green (new york city)
Being the coward that he is (four deferrals from the military), Trump is probably just attempting to cool the regional passions during the time he's close to the North Korean border. He doesn't want to be in the line of fire and will wait to shoot his mouth off when he's back in the USA.

I often ponder, if the lefties ask themselves, as Brando remarked in the Godfather, " How did things ever get like this " as he addressed the heads of the 5 families. BO and the ruling class had it absolutely made in the shade, as they say.

The con artists strikes again. I have never believed anything the man says with the exception of his recent claim "Its all about me." Half of the time he doesn't even know what he is saying and/or forgets it after one utterance. This is not normal and yet here we are. When will it ever end?

Robert Kamerer (NY)
Trump promising President Moon Jae-in, that he, Mr. Trump, will now work on diplomatic efforts has to leave President Moon Jae-in the same disposition Trump left his Secretary of State, questioning Trumps IQ. In point of fact, all it will take is just one moment where Trump and/or North Korea, will let fly an insult and threat, and Trump's promise of diplomacy will end before it even begins. The only thing that will have changed, maybe, is the location of where Trump is tweeting his insults from. Yet another tid bit: Trump calling on his bud, Putin, to help him solve the Norh Korean issue?! Is Trump serious in believing that naming Putin would pose as some kind of prod to push China into action agains North Korea?! Is this Mr. Trump's thinking? I had no idea that Vlad Putin had risen to real life Marvel Avenger Super hero status! Well! For Trump, Vlad is his hero! He idolizes Vlad Putin.

The writer who worked with Trump to write that book says differently. Very differently. And he's only gotten worse and less in control and more odd since then.

This is Trump's face-saving way of telling the Koreans he won't unilaterally start a war. I hope. The Koreans will certainly take it that way. This entire frightening dynamic lies under the shadow of the Iraq fiasco, in the sense of a potential precedent.

Preemptively might be a better term.

Our national embarrassment continues to stumble around Asia, clueless about almost every issue (except that he doesn't like the food). I bet he has briefing books on it all, but these books have never been opened. His handlers must cringe at every encounter. The Asian leaders must look at Trump like one would at a third grader with disciplinary problems, smiling condescendingly and hoping he doesn't do too much damage. They know he has the lowest level of support from the American people of any president in more than 70 years and that his support continues to decline. They know his administration and his criminal organization of a family are under the shadow of multiple upcoming legal indictments and so is he. The Asian leaders, like us, await better days and a real American leader.

By definition, power exists where the pressure of action is inevitable. Donald Trump is the exact opposite. His lies aside, the man is no good on his word except when he boasts it is conditional. I wouldn't let this man step on my property, let alone manage any part of it, but a bunch of citizens obviously operate on the same kind of make-it-up-as-you-go-along schemes that we have all been hurt by when we believe "I can fix it, buddy".

What do they do, drug him when he is traveling? He does seem to behave better abroad. Perhaps they just keep him so busy he's too tired to get into mischief. Like managing a high-need toddler.

"Another opening another show..." It's just another script, folks--- this one featuring Dove Trump who is "hoping to God..." One wonders what god he's invoking... perhaps he's referencing himself, since he creates a special kind of self-delusional reality over what he says one day and what he says the next day. Make no mistake, once he leaves Asia, he'll be back to antagonizing and inching us toward war with North Korea.
freokin (us)
Trump signaling he want a deal with N Korea, not war. This is encouraging. Art of the Deal poker faced. In this case, the deal cannot close without China's help. So it is vital for Trump to strike a grand bargain with China to 'close the deal' within two months preferably as time is of the essence to prevent N Korea making more nukes. Russia of course should be squeezed harder now to discourage her from giving a lifeline to Kim. So talking to Putin is also very important to speed up the deal timetable. This will be a much needed foreign policy win for Trump and he can immediately blame Obama/Clinton in particular for the less than ideal outcome for squandering 8 years that allow N Korea to get to this stage. This win will be very important so Trump can focus on his domestic agenda.
Joyce (San Francisco)
Of course Trump is saying that he wants to works things out - right now, he is within easy missile firing range from North Korea.

Don't believe it. Trump will start his loud-mouthed provocative war mongering waffle just as soon as he's out of Kim's back yard.

"It will all work out" . Contractors who lost their businesses after Trump didn't pay for labor or materials. Retirees who invested in condos that Trump Inc didn't build or refund. Investors whose billion dollar losses became Trump's reason to avoid a billion in taxes due on future income. Two former wives. Students with expensive and worthless degrees from Trump U. The Trump Foundation donors who own a piece of the portrait of Donald and a bit to bribe a judge. Teens ducking behind doors when old Don prowled the dressing room at a pageant. Friend of Vlad who shifted a hundred million in laundered cash to Trump. Seems to have worked out for Trump. Coal miners & their wives in PA still believe he's the reason the markets are humming along and auto workers have jobs. Not the former POTUS. The kid from Kenya. Get out and Vote.

Sticks and stones my good fellow. Just 7 more years and counting.

Words like "position" should be avoided when discussing things Trump. Very unseemly.
LFK (VA)
For God's sake he will say or do anything. And he never follows through with anything. Put aside all the horrible, and what you get is complete incompetence.
Realist (Santa Monica, Ca)
Typical Trump (lack of) specificity.

Wait and see what he says AFTER he leaves the area. He will be back to being threatening.
ArturoDisVetEsqRet (Chula Vista, Ca)
Our hypocrite in chief tells countries to implement the UN sanctions against No. Korea all the while he sits on the Russian sanctions he signed and unlawfully has failed to implement by the bills’ own deadline. This is why we aren’t taken seriously. We say to Iran and DPRK no nukes while we’re sitting on mucho nukies. Believe me.
Mike Robinson (Chickamauga, GA)
The -People- of North Korea are the true victims here. Long before most of them were born, they found themselves on the wrong side of "a Line" that was drawn when a pointless War was ... abandoned ... by both sides. However, they then found themselves on the side which the rest of the world (including the Chinese, who basically started it all ...) preferred to forget. In this power-vacuum, a group of psychopaths(!) – and I mean this term in its most-literal, most-clinical sense – seized power, and have held it ever since. These evildoers(!!) cared nothing for the People of the country that they professed to rule, and they still don't. And yet, even as they "lived upon the fat of the land," they somehow persuaded the leaders of many other countries that they were, in fact, "the legitimate Heads of State." Inexplicably, they bargained for advanced weapons – ICBMs, then perhaps nuclear(!!!) warheads – to (ahem ...) "protect themselves." Nevertheless, Mr. Trump, master-negotiator that he in fact is(!!!!), may well have a point. "The North-Korean psychopaths have, by their very actions, by now long surpassed their perimeter of international credibility." Perceiving that they have nothing to lose, they appear quite eager to "inflict World War III" upon the rest of the world community ... which community(!!!!!) is not the slightest bit interested in experiencing any such thing. Therefore: "It will all work out?" Yes, I believe ... cautiously ... that it may well be so.
Steven of the Rockies (Steamboat springs, CO)
"Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God," And then there is the curious, Mr. Trump. Congress and the Cabinet might want to protect the Korean people from unstable individuals, or history will condemn them for all time for the loss of an entire people.
mak (Syracuse,NY)
What we 'understand' from his interview is that because he is now actually within 'missile strike distance', that Trump has tamed down his rhetoric considerably. We went from 'fire and fury' to 'it'll all work out'. And, what we also 'understand' is that once he's safely back in Washington, the nasty "Rocket Man' tweets will start up again. Typical Bully-in-Chief behavior - play nice when they can hit you, and call names when you're out of reach. Sad.
Ashwood8 (New York, N.Y.)
"Mr. Trump also reprised his role as a chief salesman for the American defense industry." Simply, buy our brand new, shiny missile defense system and everything will be okay. There is nothing to be concerned about. See, Japan has already signed on. Besides, your purchases will further enable my tax cut.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
How can Kim Jong-un, the very peculiar dictator of an impoverished fifth-rate slave state, possibly hope to defeat the richest, strongest, most powerful country in the world? It took me a while, but I finally figured it out. Kim has spent the last year watching Fox News. What he’s figured out from this experience is that the U.S. is governed by a mentally unstable man with no appetite at all for running this country; and that the U.S, is plagued by a do-nothing legislature; an out-of-control deficit; airports, bridges, highways and rail systems that are rapidly collapsing; and a gun violence problem that beggars rational description. Kim’s solution? Stand back and enjoy the show. The U.S. is already defeated. Why waste time, energy and his meager resources on a country so far gone that it no longer recognizes defeat even when it is staring it directly in the face.
In deed (Lower 48)
Great. Now explain Obama. Insane also describes people who use a fascist buffoon to explain everything including what came before rather than face up to hard facts and hard choices. Americans. Spoiled. Corrupt. Trump did not create Kim, the North Korean nukes or ICBMs, or China playing games to push the US out and down. Not that it is Kim's or China's fault that so many Americans are so self absorbed and clueless. It is their duty to play suckers for fools. In Teump they have a sucker. In the vast majority of commenters, more suckers. Suckers who cannot be bothered to learn the basic facts before doubling down on narcisstic delusions of their own.
NaturalGenius (Westchester NY)
Because he fears China will change alliances and take away all his chocolate?
Pepperman (Philadelphia)
The plan of Mr Kim has been to decouple the alliance with the US. As a rwsult of his policy to point nuclear wrapons at the US, he may succeed. The Koreans are more concerned with the Japanese becoming a military power than the North. These events will push the Seoul government into a treaty with the Chinese, their, largest trading partner.
Mikeyz (Boston)
"It will all work out"...isn't that what he's told everyone that he has stiffed in the past?
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
Just my luck. I had a few bucks riding on 'We'll see' and Trump went with the co favorite 'ultimately, it will all work out.'

"It will be sooooo easy!"
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Is it just me??? I feel a slight easing of my usual anxiety, my BP is down, it's almost like spring. In November. Donald, maybe you should make this a more extended tour. A World Tour, like a Rock Group. A Farewell Tour: Trump DOES the Planet.

Trump, to his illegal immigrant workers: It will all work out. To his casino employees: It will all work out. To his subcontractors: It will all work out. To the students at Trump University: It will all work out. To his creditors: It will all work out. To his working and middle class voters: It will all work out. Trump, to the South Koreans: It will all work out.
John David James (Calgary)
From a foreigner's perspective, the problem with American foreign policy is that your words no longer have any meaning at all. Your president is a liar who will say whatever suits him at any given moment. Trump is a man of chaos and dishonesty. that does not bode well for anyone in the world.
david x (new haven ct)
John David James--I hope that you're aware that the majority of the people of the USA agree with you: the individual who's grabbed power in our nation is a danger to the entire world.
Mike (NYC)
I think Trump is right. What the North Koreans want, as in the past, is money. They are poor. They export almost nothing. There is starvation. They even eat dog. If we pay them some money they'll shut up for a time until they need more. Better to pay them than go to war. Wars cost money and lives.
NaturalGenius (Westchester NY)
If he gets KIM to denuke? I'd say that's worth Boardwalk AND Park Place!
Elizabeth (Roslyn, NY)
What? A mild almost normal Trump sounding like Mommy "Don't worry dear, it will all work out'? At least he wasn't a raging bully. Conclusion = South Korea buys millions worth of weapons from us. What a surprise. This is less a diplomatic mission and more of a Buy US Weapons Today Sale!
JB (CA)
A trip just made for the arms industry. Well, after all, why should our people be the only ones arming themselves to the teeth at home?!!!!!

Once again Trump is right and doing a great job partnering with other countries leaders. Just look at how happy Moon is with Trump whenever they meet.
Patrick Borunda (Washington)
"...use their influence to bring North Korea to heel,..." And which countries are going to bring the out-of-control United States to heel when it is being "led" by a bully-boy, failed showman and grossly ignorant Donald Trump? Face it. The man is utterly clueless and we let him put three carrier strike groups and a boomer within minutes of North Korea. Who needs to be brought to heel?
Neil M (Texas)
I have been following the POTUS on his Asia tour via C-SPAN. Perhaps, it was only me - but you could tell that he was not as comfortable in South Korea as he was in Japan. May be he is on his 3rd day. My own take is that he is holding cards close to his chest until he meets the Chinese. And I hoping that he reads them a riot act by letting them know America is determined to get rid of this odious regime of North Korea. The POTUS forcefully talked about Otto Warmbier in Japan when he met families of those Japanese abductees. I was in North Korea and cut my stay short as I could not take that nonsense. Pyongyang is a Potemkin village - we went in the country side. It's like two different countries. It's one of the most depressing places I have been to - and my travel count is 104 countries visited. My own take is that Japan has signed off on the action on North Korea and once he confronts China - he as much alluded by saying China is being helpful. If some one notices, the POTUS in South Korea also said that US is trying to get every one to stop completely doing any business with North Korea. A total isolation. He also added that China appears willing - Russia not yet. So, rather than blaming the POTUS for the Korean peninsula problem - I hope he succeeds in ridding this regime - peacefully or otherwise.
PoohBah2 (Oregon)
I am absolutely dumbfounded by Trump's most recent excursion into wishful thinking and alternate reality: "Ultimately it will all work out. Because it always works out — has to work out." What on earth does he mean by that? That's what you tell your kids when you comfort them about the boogyman under the bed, or the death of their dog, or the report they have to give in class tomorrow. Trump is clueless, incompetent, without any concept of what he's doing, and with absolutely no idea of what he's talking about. And with a moron's knowledge of history.
Jiacheng Wu (Berkeley, CA)
These days whenever I hear that Trump “declare” something, I always assume he won’t follow through. This is the American leadership, the biggest destabilizing element of Northeast Asia.

"It will all work out" when Trump is in prison.
Jim Muncy (Crazy, Florida)
So after threatening "fire and fury like the world has never seen," "the time for talking is over," and telling the Secretary of State to give up on diplomacy with Rocket Man, Trump, in a complete turnaround, says that "It will all work out." Apparently, the art of the deal consists of wild talk, violent threats, and dubious promises. It's Russian Roulette diplomacy: a gamble involving the whole world. Fingers crossed!
C. Whiting (Madison, WI)
What? It's as if we're all below decks, and the ship is careening port then starboard, and we're wondering just what the captain is thinking. A quick scan of the deck reveals the problem: There is no chart, there is no course, there is no one at the wheel. We have a country to guide through some pretty perilous straights, now made more perilous by the yo-yo in the captain's hat admiring the view off the stern. Oh, wait. He said it will all work out? I'm so sea-sick at this point I might even settle for an Al Haig, jumping up and shouting "I'm in charge now!
Nelson (California)
With a meager 37% approval and 63% rejection this critter should not speak on behalf of the We The People. Although he will promise both Koreas and Japan this world and the next, the incompetent won't deliver anything just like he has done with naive 'minors' still waiting for a shower of great jobs. They will be tired of winning but now they realizing they have been tired of waiting....for nothing.
Llewis (N Cal)
What’s with Trump and all the praying? Praying will solve gun violence. Praying will solve N Korea. This man is drifting on the sea of unreality in a leaky rubber raft. Trump’s M.O. is to whip up a bad situation or do nothing then call on a deity to fix the problem. If there was a deity or president that cared there wouldn’t be a long list of church killings. N Korea would have been smote. Trump wouldn’t be president.
Slann (CA)
Looks like someone whose-name-we'll-never-know (from the "inside" government) may have had a "sit down" with the "president". At least I'm hoping that's what's going on.
REBCO (FORT LAUDERDALE FL)
A schoolyard bully has met his match ad its reality. Pentagon analysis points out that it would take a land war to secure North Korean nuke facilities a costly adventure the American people would not support and Bannon pointed that out . Trump already highly unpopular cannot take the risk of dropping further in the polls Trump as it seems has no core beliefs only has faith in his own greatness so he is able to do a 180 on any issue.
Bergo72 (Washington DC)
I imagine the old guy is a bit tired and off his feed from his travel and having to act presidential for four days in a row. He is still insane and inept and inconceivably unfit for being POTUS. Once the jet lag wears off, he is just as likely to change his mind and order a first strike on NK because he is, after all, just a moron.
DbB (Sacramento)
These were the words coming out Donald Trump's mouth: "Ultimately it will all work out. It always works out -- has to work out." This was the thought bubble coming out of his head: "I have no plan for resolving the North Korean crisis other than to just mouth off when I feel like it. And whatever happens, I will be able to convince my supporters that I made things better. It always works out that way for me."
mark (boston)
I trust that the people of South Korea don't believe a word Trump says.
P2 (NE)
Like, it is working out for us - The People.
Michael (Boston)
It will all work out? Trump has offered incendiary and inconsistent rhetoric regarding N Korea during the few short months he has been addressing the escalation of N Korea's weapons program. This administration has no coherent, articulated plan to defuse the situation. Worse still, Trump undermined his own Secretary of State as he was trying to establish a dialogue. The SOS himself has no experience with international relations and presides over a State department in turmoil. I am not at all convinced it will all work out with this dysfunctional team in charge. Also unfortunately, the recent record of countries negotiating an end or suspension of nuclear weapons development has led to the US publicly undermining that agreement (Iran) or assisting the overthrow of the government (Libya). As much as I don't trust and also abhor the N Korean regime, a reasonable person could argue that they would be justified to doubt whether the US will abide by the terms of any agreement. We are not in a good position. In a matter of 1-2 years the N Koreans might be able to launch a nuclear tipped missile at the continental US. Then how will we respond if they invade S Korea or the disputed Dokdo islands between Korea and Japan?
Paul Wortman (East Setauket, NY)
Well a toned-down, not so twitter-happy, even "blithe" President Trump is perhaps a good sign. I still hope that the U.S. will work with China and Russia to negotiate a treaty with both North and South Korea for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and perhaps even the larger Southeast Asian area including Vietnam and Japan. But, selling "'billions of dollars'" of arms to Japan and South Korea will not achieve that goal, but only further escalate the tensions in the region. The real threat of a nuclear war should not be viewed as a trading opportunity, except perhaps in getting China to sign on to a peace treaty by offering them power-sharing in a regional trade agreement.
Patricia (Atlanta)
"It will all work out" is what I might say to pacify my 8 year old when she's gotten into a disagreement with her best friend. Comments such as these lack in depth, thoughtfulness and understanding on an issue of critical importance to our nation. I've never felt so frightened and helpless as I do now with our current president in office, not only because his words and actions are usually contrary to one another, but also because he thinks he knows more than highly trained ambassadors, of which there are few in this current administration.
P2 (NE)
Dear Koreans, we're allies and friends for many decades. But please watch Fox news; since the war is a word away from Rupert Murdoch empire machinery to lie: "Little Rocket Man fired a rocket to Mainland America.." Rest will be taken care by Trump. It may not help you but will give you some warning.
John Smithson (California)
Donald Trump cannot do anything without criticism from the New York Times and its readers. Not as caustic as the Washington Post, certainly, but caustic enough. Donald Trump and his troupe have done well on this trip. He seems to be settling into being president. No hint of any Russian connection has emerged after more than a year of investigation, and in fact Hillary Clinton seems in more trouble now about the Steele dossier and her takeover of the Democratic National Committee than Donald Trump. When will the Times cover Donald Trump straight up and fairly? Never, maybe? I guess we'll see.
David Godinez (Kansas City, MO)
I can accept the theory that North Korea is not planning to use its nuclear weapons, for all the obvious reasons. But to go on and state that their purpose is to protect the country in order to allow it "to focus on economic development" is just laughable, when you consider the economic and political consequences that their program have brought upon the country. Clearly, the purpose of the nuclear and chemical weapons programs are for one reason only: to protect the Kim family's hegemony over North Korea for as long as possible. Nothing is more important for the family and its retainers than that.
UC Graduate (Los Angeles)
It's all very disturbing. In both press conferences in Tokyo and Seoul, Trump was most animated and coherent when it came to selling American weapon systems and addressing trade imbalances. Could it possibly be that all this drumbeat to nuclear war was a ploy to sell billions of dollars of U.S. weapons and to put pressure on trade agreements? We're beyond expecting Trump to have any nuanced understanding of global geopolitics--after all, he asked why Japan and South Korea did not have nuclear weapons as a candidate--but Americans cannot have a president who's modus operandi is to sow political discord only to serve the American military complex. This was the nightmare that Dwight Eisenhower saw as one of the greatest dangers to American democracy and global peace and the fevered charge of the far left both domestic and abroad. Trump is prancing around Asia (and before that the Middle East and Europe) as the merchant of American arms and is fatally damaging any role of the only remaining superpower as an honest broker of peace. I suppose that in some ways South Koreans may be comforted. It turns out that what the American president wants is simple--money. Trump is a gangster and this is a shakedown to buy American arms and renegotiate the Korean-US Free Trade Agreement. I guess they'll pay for this protection racket as a cost of doing business this time around. In the future, however, South Koreans may find a better deal from gangsters from Beijing.
NorthernVirginia (Falls Church, VA)
N. Korea really doesn’t stand a chance. With conventional weapons alone, we will obliterate their leadership, military, and nuclear facilities in short order. The one-sided nature of the upcoming conflict will make our 100-hour victory of the first Gulf War seem like a genuine contest. The loss of N. Korean lives will be regrettable, but those losses will be offset by the millions of lives rescued from the N. Korean death camps. Looking forward to the war.
Ann Husaini (New York)
It seems like Trump's plan is to arm NK's neighbors to the teeth and let them fight it out while we sit on the sidelines. But I am grateful that he's zipping his lips on the blowhard talk for once. Maybe he is afraid that NK will bomb Seoul while he's visiting.
In deed (Lower 48)
The Times editorial position is now clear: blame Trump for the problem created by Kim: “President Trump, whose long-distance threats and insults toward North Korea have stoked fears of a nuclear confrontation, brought a message of reassurance to South Korea on Tuesday, moving to bolster an anxious ally as he came within 35 miles of one of the world’s most dangerous borders.” Despicable. Reporting is dead. Too cowardly to even state the issue. if I see the name Choe I Now the blame America propaganda will be reported as fact. Trump is a fascist buffoon. Choe a useful idiot. A pair.
Chicago Guy (Chicago, Il)
"It will all work out", in a big mushroom cloud.
race_to_the_bottom (Portland)
Trump has no choice but to talk. China has put fourth a proposal, supported by Russia and apparently South Korea. The proposal is for NK to suspend its nuclear and missile program and the US would suspend it non-stop military exercises in the region. Then negotiations would begin with an aim to finally achieve and end to the war, which is still technically on. A peace treaty guaranteed by the UN Security Council would include denuclearization of the peninsula and the normalization of relations of the US, SK, and Nk. This is truly win-win, and Trump will hear it tomorrow from Xi Jinping and when he meets Putin in Vietnam. In fact, he will hear this everywhere. This would be a big win for the world.
John Adams (CA)
No one knows what "it will all work out" means. No one. Not Trump, not anyone around the globe. No one in our government nor our intelligence agencies. Trump himself doesn't know what he means with that statement. He's just talking, wishing he possesses the skills and intelligence to back up his claim that he's an expert dealmaker. No one believes that anymore. Not even most of his 36% hardcore base.
Keith ('upstate' NY)
“I think we’re making a lot of progress, I think we’re showing great strength, I think they understand we have unparalleled strength,” No. We HAD unparalleled strength. Now we have you, Trump. Unstable, untrustworthy, indifferent, divisive. See the difference?
Kenell Touryan (Colorado)
It is about time for Trump to listen to the wise advice of his 'generals' and the leaders of South Korea, instead of bullying NK with threats of imminent destruction. I hope Trump learns how to be diplomatic with Asian countries during this trip and realize how inevitable it is for the US 'to come sown his high horse' of chanting US First, and thus start thinking globally.
Jim Bob (Chicago)
Gone were the threats to rain “fire and fury” on North Korea. Until the next weekend's tweet volley from the golden throne.
cherrylog754 (Atlanta, GA)
Of course he’s going to say it will all work out. Trump is in Seoul, not in Washington. He’s just a stone’s throw from the other “wild man” and his rockets! Let’s wait until he’s out of the firing line and see what he has to say. My bet is on more tough talk rhetoric when he’s safe at home.

Blind faith, in a leader, is disturbing to witness since a leader is supposed to have a plan and know what is happening. I do find DT's assessment to be unsettling.

Yup, he’s only brave on Twitter. When he’s face to face with any other leader his natural cowardice shows right up.
Stevie Matthews (Oyster Bay, NY)
This is the absolute truth. Trump has backed down before every world leader he has met face-to-face. What an embarrassment for our country and if he had any shame, what an embarrassment for him
uga muga (Miami Fl)
I suspect they know we have "unparalleled strength" and that we are willing to use it. That's why they are racing to develop a deliverable nuclear arsenal and maintain a overwhelming conventional military threat to Seoul. Possibly our current regime's whacky statements and unpredictable behavior may give them pause. Perhaps the trump card is the crazy card. Jokers are wild.

I originally thought that this trip would be another Trump disaster and he would just blunder his way though Asia. However I was wrong. Like a fox there is actually a plan underway and we are seeing it unfold in front of our eyes not really knowing what it is. Japan first. A powerful ally that is now committed to increasing defenses (purchased from our military industrial complex) and taking action against NK, if necessary. Then there is SK, "don't worry guys, I promise it will all work out, believe me." Then there is China where trade is first and foremost. "We can improve our trading agreements, good for both economies", and if you agree to take care of NK, Asia is yours. Trump agrees to share the world as equals, if it doesn't hurt business. Then there is the Philippines where he will praise Duterte for his unorthodox treatment of drug dealers and imply that he likes dictators cause they get things done. All in all, we come away from this trip with a lot of defense contracts; The NK problem turned over to Japan and China; human rights abuses buried - not even mentioned; and, China takes the lead in the economics and defense of Asia. When Trump gets home, he will say he arranged some great bilateral trade deals and helped to bring peace and unite the world. In effect he will have made the world a more dangerous place and will have brought us another step closer to an authoritarian style government, red meat for his base.
JS (Minnetonka, MN)
The idea that Trump's advisors actuallly believe that NK plans to forcefully unify Korea on their terms reveals the delusional bark-at-the-moon nonsense at work in Trumpland. Set aside the South's alliances with the U.S. South Korea is twice as populous, has some 35 times greater GDP, 30 times greater per capita GDP, and a vastly more capable and more cohesive military presence than its northern neighbor. The only way NK could overrun the south would leave the entire peninsula a smoking and radiation-poisoned wasteland. Both countries understand this far better than our blustering president and his coterie of toadies, which fact should supply some small measure of reassurance.
Gualtiero (Los Angeles)
Without the nuclear umbrella of the United States OR it own nuclear weapons to defend it, NK would handily win a war against SK. NK would force SK to capitulate in a few days by showering the country with chemical weapons, artillery shells and biological weapons dispersed by special forces inserted into SK. SK does not stand a chance without these protections.
Zenon (Detroit)
If I'm reading this correctly, North Korea is the "bad guy with a gun", South Korea and Japan are "good guys with a gun", and Trump's America is the global NRA, ready to sell South Korea, Japan and a whole lot of other people a whole lot of guns! Look! Another jobs program!
Dan Lufkin (Frederick, MD)
"Nice little country you got here. Be a shame if anything happened to it. Would you be interested in buying an insurance policy from us? We can protect you from the Little Rocket Man if he loses his temper at us."
tony b (sarasota)
South Korea should feel relieved given how well Trump governs in America.....
Gualtiero (Los Angeles)
There will be no second North Korean war, at least not now. Trump's remarks today and yesterday in Japan reflect a new reality: the US is "surrendering" to NK and indicating that it may no longer be able to protect these countries against a resurgent NK intent on using conventional, chemical and biological weapons to forcibly reunify the Peninsula, under the cover of nuclear ICBMs. Indeed, Trump indicated that both Japan and SK will be buying huge amounts of new weapons from the US to bolster their defenses against NK. This represents a turning point in World History. It marks the continuation of the end of the post-WWII Alliance System whereby the US exercised influence abroad by agreeing to protect key allies against aggression by Communist forces. The surrender began with the defeat of US forces in Vietnam, and the failure of the US to respond militarily to violent, deadly NK military provocations over the years. Will Trump's invitation to NK to the negotiating table be successful? No, absolutely not. NK will finish its ICBM program and thereby "checkmate" the US. Afterwards, the US will submit to perpetual blackmail from NK, because no US leader can contemplate losing even one US city to NK ICBMs. The NK Regime has built the "ultimate" insurance policy with nuclear weapons which threaten not only the US and its Allies, but also China and Russia. Going forward, NK will be dictating terms, and the US will simply try to limit the number of NK nukes and ICBMs.
uga muga (Miami Fl)
I doubt either China or Russia would sit still for more than a few minutes if threatened by their ally North Korea.
Eric Hendricks (Oregon)
Sir, Please let us know what option you may that would reduce the North Korean nuclear program without costing the lives of several hundred thousand South Koreans.
Tom Roche (Cork, Ireland)
I don't think this can be described as the US surrendering. All that's happened is Trump has finally realised something important, something past administrations have realised during their own terms of office. You cannot launch pre-emptive military action against a country which possesses nuclear weapons. North Korea has been in possession of nuclear weapons since at least the late 1990's, so this issue has existed for 4 Presidents over 2 decades. Trumps accusations against previous President's of doing nothing, appeasing or ignoring the issues are plainly untrue. Problem for Trump now is that his mouth has written cheques his Presidency can't cash, and his 'never gonna happen' tweets are going to come back to haunt him in his bid for a second term. The only way to deal with North Korea is by containment, making it clear that any attack whatsoever on the US or it's allies will result, within an hour, in the destruction of North Korea. That's a threat I think the rest of the world can live with, and it's a threat I believe the North Korean leadership are already fully aware exists. It's clearly not an ideal solution, but in the absence of a deal under which North Korea agrees to dismantle it's nuclear and missile programs, which is never going to happen, then it's the best solution we've got.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
If what he means by "it will all work out" is that there will be a major war with most of the population of both North and South Korea being wiped out then yes it will all work out, because there is no way DJT is going to keep his mouth shut or keep his thumbs from tweeting something stupid. I hope to God there's not a war but with this idiot you never know!
C. Whiting (Madison, WI)
"President Trump...brought a message of reassurance to South Korea on Tuesday" No. If a schizophrenic says "I'll destroy you," then "I'll wipe you off the map" then "I love you" well, that "I love you" is certainly not a message of reassurance.
Pat (Somewhere)
"“Ultimately it will all work out. Because it always works out — has to work out.” General Vincent Brooks, the American commander, wore a grim expression as he listened to the president." I'd wear a grim expression too if I heard the Commander in Chief and most powerful person in the world offer such a breezy and superficial assessment of international relations.

Trump's words reflect his audience, they always do. There is no more substance to anything he says than there is to the image in a mirror.

'...that it would be in Pyongyang’s interest to “come to the table and to make a deal.”' Did this President just utter the "D" word? Of course he doesn't comprehend the word Diplomacy but used its lessor synonym. Obama used Diplomacy so of course it had to be wrong; a deal is so much better...
Gualtiero (Los Angeles)
He did utter the "D" word: "Defeat"!!!

The utter incompetence of Trump is amazing. It has become obvious that there is no reason to trust him because he has no idea what he is saying. The man is addled and ignorant. It's time for a medical review of his capacities.

That medical review should include Congressmen Biggs, Franks, Gaetz, and Meadows, who I just witnessed giving speeches on the House floor!

So now he's touting great progress in negotations after tweeting that Rex Tillerson was wasting his time with diplomacy. What a joke this country has inflicted on other nations.

not keeping up with Trump news i.e. made offer to make a deal with NOKO

Oh, the adulation!!! It's so easy to lose any faith that one might have had in the mental gravitas of any of today's political elite. Apart from Angela Merkel.
John McGlynn (San Francisco)
Trump's on-again off-again talk of military actions, no to diplomacy, now maybe yes to diplomacy, all belie the truth. He has no plan and there is no policy for dealing with this situation. President Bluff&Buster.
freokin (us)
So far so good. No inflammatory behavior from Trump to cause an accidental war. A freeze for freeze is probably the best outcome. US should take this opportunity with Chinese help to stop N Korea from further nuke development. No further stockpiling of nukes even though untested. The longer the delay, the more sanctions bite, the harder to achieve this best practical outcome. Sanctions have run out of practical usefulness. With a freeze for freeze, US can essentially buy time to improve her anti missile technology and also have Japan install some of them to stop N Korean nukes from reaching CONUS. If Japan won't do it, US can at least operate this GBI out from Japanese soil like around Hokkaido and Okinawa perhaps as first line of defense.
Gualtiero (Los Angeles)
Freeze for Freeze is a stupid compromise, because it permit NK to continue building more nukes and ICBMs in clandestine facilities even while (temporarily) suspending more missile tests and nuclear detonations. Then, at a time of its choosing, NK will abrogate the "deal" and present the US with dozens of nuclear-tipped ICBMs ready for the testing. The current technology of ICBM defenses is inadequate, with a "success" rate of under 50%, under "ideal" conditions. Moreover, there is no missile defense which can stop dozens of ICBMs launched simultaneously. "Freeze for Freeze" might work only with intrusive inspections, something which has NEVER been allowed by NK. The game is over, and the US has lost. Good luck to SK and Japan.

Welcome to the Korean campus of Trump University.....now accepting new students and their money. Brought to you by one America's most experienced and 'successful' bankruptcy filers.

blithe blīT͟H,blīTH/ adjective showing a casual and cheerful indifference considered to be callous or improper. "a blithe disregard for the rules of the road" synonyms:casual, indifferent, unconcerned, unworried, untroubled, uncaring, careless, heedless, thoughtless; 2018 is not soon enough, Mueller. it's not soon enough ...
Martin (New York)
In this case I wouldn't go with casual and cheerful. I would go with arrogant and ignorant.

Whatever hooey is streaming out of Trump's mouth, you can safely assume just the opposite is actually taking place.
John (Pittsburgh/Cologne)
President Trump. Peacemaker. That will ultimately be the headline, once President Trump signs some type of deal. Yes, the deal will enable North Korea to maintain some nuclear weapons and missiles. No, that is not an optimal outcome. Unfortunately, Trump inherited a losing hand from Clinton, W. Bush, and Obama, and this will be the best deal he can get. The only question is how liberals will react. Their playbook so far has been to paint Trump as an unstable warmonger. Once this deal occurs, they will have to pivot to become phony war hawks, like they did with Russia, telling us that Trump is a lousy dealmaker who capitulated and left the U.S. open to North Korea's nuclear threat. I'm guessing that the new liberal word of the day will be "appeasement". No matter. President Trump may just win a Nobel Peace Prize once the deal is completed. At least his will have been deserved.
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
@John: You state; "The only question is how liberals will react." Surely you jest. The only one painting Trump as an unstable warmonger- are his own words. Peace doesn't have a political party or affiliation, at least not in my universe. I would hope that all sane people would advocate for it. You make another statement; "I'm guessing that the new liberal word of the day will be "appeasement." That is a word most favored by Republicans- or didn't you know before you wrote your comment?
John (San Francisco, CA)
John Pittsburgh/Cologne love you sense of humor

John...you really must stop watching Fox News.

Might be prudent self-preservation, of course, just in case the feared NoKo artillery started to rain fire while he was still in Seoul. One can only hope against hope that President Trump has finally understood the advantage of speaking softly. A lot depends on the North's next step. If they continue to refrain from firing any more missiles or carry out tests, the chances of peace go up. Reports speak of a couple of tunnel collapses around the Hydrogen bomb test side, leading to hundreds of deaths. If true, the Hermit State might be considering holding on to further tests. Given its past record, however, another missile launch is just round the corner.
Wayne Logsdon (Portland, Oregon)
War is not the answer. Only quiet diplomacy holds the key especially the resumption of 6 party talks. He should let the professionals handle this. If only we could believe our commander in chief however.
Martin (New York)
Yeah, diplomacy has proven invaluable in solving a 60+ year impasse on the peninsula and deterring North Korea from obtaining nuclear weapons and pointing them at the U.S. More diplomacy. Yeah, by all means!
BD (San Diego)
The Six Party talks have had past success in halting N. Korea's nuclear weapons development?

Perhaps, perhaps meeting, talking to, touching and looking into the very eyes of all those U.S. and South Korean troops, and civilians, who would quickly turn into "cannon fodder" should war commence, might restrain the reckless impulses of the impetuous Trump. Time, of course, will only tell. This is, after all, the narcissist who unbelievably commented recently that if hostilities broke out, casualties would only be limited to the Korean Peninsula. Under the shiftIng, contradictory "policies" of this dangerously immature Administration, it all could tragically depend on what Trump saw on early morning t.v., a fickle Fox foreign policy. God save us!!
NorthernVirginia (Falls Church, VA)
I recommend you visit the N. Korean death camps and stare into the hollow eye-sockets of children who are purposely being starved to death for some imagined offense of their grandparents. The Kim regime must be destroyed, along with any country that backs them.
Blackcat66 (NJ)
Easy to say when you have no skin in the game huh? Are you going to send your kids to fight? Will any of your people die? I'd love to see the NK regime toppled as well but I'll not call for any war that will have such a hard cost for so many innocent people and absolutely none for me. This is not something the U.S. will ever be able to address on it's own. Personally, I think the more North Koreans can learn from the outside world I think the more will try to defect. Internal instability will probably hasten the fall of that regime faster than outside bluster. We should be dumping tons of western movies and SK soap operas into their black markets. Bolster refugee aid for defectors fleeing that rat hole.
coale johnson (5000 horseshoe meadow road)
typical..... bluster from afar and play nice when you are face to face with those your words affect. but of course he "hopes to god" we never have to use certain measures. i knew something had changed when he spoke kim jung un's entire name at a recent press conference.....

The Coward in Chief exercises his bravado only within the secure confines of his bedroom at 4 AM when he's all a-twitter. Never mind the fake whatever. Trump exudes fakery in his look, his manner, his every word. The Koreans know full well what they're dealing with. Shame that only some Americans know it too.
