Driverless cars are a cool device but there are many flaws and the artificial intelligence in some can be a little off sometimes. Personally I think they are too life risking because it is a computer driving for you which anyone can program to do different functions which can have flaws and could kill people. don't get me wrong people driving can be bad too because people are not perfect but what makes people think that a computer is better for the job then a person. I would not drive in one because they are still flawed and being researched on and a new thing that will have bugs, and I don't see these cars too near in the future but maybe potentially way further in the future when we have more knowledge on how to harness these objects correctly and properly.
Larry Blumenstein (Wilsonville, OR)
If a driverless car is involved in an accident involving multiple objects or persons, how does it know when it has fulfilled its duty to exchange information. Also, how do you exchange your information with a driverless car. I called Oregon DMV, Portland's mayor's office, a car manufacturer, my insurance company and nobody had an answer. I also asked Portland Police if they had any method to demand a driverless car to stop and the person I was talking with said that they had never been asked that question. I have many more questions, but I can't find anyone entrusted with my safety who seems interested.

I don't recommend to use this on a daily bases and I think that the driver less cars are necessary for the people who are injured or are in need to use it. I say that I don't recommend this because it's something I can't rely on since it's technology that is still capable of causing fatal incidents. Driver less cars should be used by those who need it urgently and for those who truly rely on it. As I mentioned it is obvious that I wouldn't use it often or at all. I believe that it could be the way of future since the world get's too attached to technology.
Javier HHHS (Michigan)
Driverless cars are the future of the world. Driverless cars would be able to significantly reduce the amount of traffic accidents that occur. However, a large downside is that it may destroy the transportation industry. Taxi drivers will lose a majority of their business, which would obviously leave many people unemployed. So the real question is, what is the United States ready for? Are we able to leave people unemployed to make life easier?

I think Driverless cars would take out all the fun in a car. Driverless cars would help older people get around more, but how can you trust these machines? What if the car malfunctions while driving who is going to be responsible? Plus, Driving is fun and interesting, driverless cars wouldn't be that fun, I know it won"t be for me!
Sydney Durner (Wilmington, NC)
Driverless cars are inevitable. They’re a great innovation. Over 37,000 people die in car crashes each year due to human error. Driverless cars can help prevent this number from being so high. Driverless cars already have very advanced technology and it will only improve. It’s normal to be fearful and have anxiety over driverless cars, after all, we like to have control of situations we’re in. I think that the driver should be able to override certain actions the computers in the cars decide. Like Leonhardt says, “the technology for semi-driverless cars still isn’t good enough or cheap enough. The $50,000 Volvo I was driving — like a Tesla I’ve tried — got confused by unpainted lane lines, for instance, and I had to take over. But the technology is improving rapidly. Within a few years, many cars will have sophisticated crash-avoidance systems.” If the car wasn’t semi-driverless, it could have caused a really bad accident. But over time, the technology will only improve and the cars will be able to pick up on things like unpainted lines. These cars could prevent so many wrecks from occurring and make the roads a safer place for everyone.
Marshall Noah Crawford (Virginia Beach)
I personally think driveless cars are useless to the normal person, driveless cars should only be used by older people, students in a driving class and people afraid of cars. I think driving is an important thing for everyone to learn, how are you supposed to get to your job if you can't drive? Walk? Then run the possibility of having no energy, and things like that. But, I may be basised, as I love cars, motorcycles and pretty much anything that runs off an engine and drives on road or off-road.
Kimberly Brooks (Virginia Beach, VA)
Great Response Marshall. I mostly agree. Sometimes I do not want to drive, and at those times I would love a driverless car. :)
Eve Krupcheck (Massachusetts)
Eve Krupcheck “Driverless Cars” Do we have the technology to make self-driving cars? Yes. Should we make self driving cars? Not really. Every company is trying to sell a product to make a profit, this includes the self-driving car industry. Companies will cut corners to make more money and not think about the effect what they make could have on society. Self-driving cars are the next big thing and most big car cooperations would do anything to be the first to put that on the market. The article connected to the picture prompt talk about how self-driving cars would eliminate drunk drivers, falling asleep at the wheel, and crashes due to texting while driving. Though I agree that theoretically self-driving cars would do this. I do not buy that they are not dangerous and will not cause problems for society. What if there is glitch in the system? Possible. Something being controlled by machine does not make it perfect. Machines still break. Are people becoming too reliant on self-sufficiency? Are self-driving cars just another way for people to be replaced with machines? In my opinion yes to both. New technology has helped the world in many ways. However it has had many negative effects, many of these negative effects being physiological. Technology has the potential to fix many of the world’s problems, but it also has the potential to create many more problems. It is important to be open to new technology, but still be critical of what is being put on the market.
Natalie (GA)
I think that self driving cars can be good but there are also many question about accidents and who's fault it is. In theory they seem like a good idea but there are things that we haven't thought about.
Carley F. (Georgia)
I wouldn't ride in a driverless car just for my safety. Just the thought of having them on our roads is very dangerous. Relying on the car's sensors won't allow me to feel safe riding in them. I feel like they would cause more crashes than all of the ones that happen now.
J. Richardson (Georgia,USA)
I wouldn't ride in one simply because of my safety. Even though it has sensors around the car I still wouldn't feel safe; what if the sensors were to malfunction and not tell the car to slow down or stop then I would be in big trouble. Manual cars are my kind of cars so I would stick with those.
AVE (Locust Grove)
I think driverless cars are neat . I would ride in one for one time but never again because, they could get out of control . Of course i would think they are the future one day.
Avery Wilson (Georgia)
I believe driverless cars can be helpful but also very dangerous. They are helpful if someone is very tired and most people may fall asleep during driving if they have not had enough sleep , the car would keep running on the right side of the road if the person falls asleep. Driverless cars are also very dangerous because if you are not in control of the car the vehicle can easily run off the road or cause a accident. I believe they should not have driverless cars because it is more dangerous hen it is helpful.
Liam (Locust Grove,Georgia)
Driverless cars is more dangerous. I would't ride in one.If the future is driverless cars then can kids drive them? Would you still need a drivers license? I think driverless cars would cause more crashes. Driverless cars are more expensive then a regular car so could people afford them?
Jacob Pittman (Georgia)
I mean if i had to i would but most people prefer to drive themselves sooo i don't see why i have to do this why don't u try asking about flying cars that is the greatest idea ever!
Maggie Yang (King of Prussia)
Driverless cars are relatively new in out world of technology. I personally would not ride in one. I think that relying too heavily on a car's sensors would be a tremendous risk. If advances are made and more safety precautions were put into place, then I might consider riding one.
Emily Grffiths (Locust Grove High)
I feel driver less cars will be dangerous. They will cause more crashes than we have now.
Kacin (FSI Asheville, NC)
I understand the hesitance behind the self-driving car, it is terrifying to let something that isn't human and therefore cannot relate to you personally take control of such a significant part of your life. However, the misrepresentation with driver-less cars is a little ridiculous. I find it very similar to people's fear of planes, when an accident, however rare, happens, it blows up all over media. This new innovation is no different. Personally, yes, I would ride in a driver-less car, since I do not yet even have a Learners Permit and still have to put my life in someone else's hands in order to even get to school. So while my opinion might change in the future, yes, I would drive in a self-driven car.
Luka (FSI Asheville, Nc)
Driverless cars are the new spark of the future. A nod to the science fiction concept of a car that requires no driver. Many companies these days are making great leaps to the future through manufacturing and testing driverless cars. Driverless cars can cause fewer accidents, and keep our roads safer in many ways, but after all, a self-driving car is essentially a computer, and computers break down. Driverless cars could solve many problems, but they can also make new problems. Cost is quite high, and many of the designs are prototypes rather than vehicles offered for sale. I think manufacturers should test these vehicles to ensure safety. I have also heard of companies like Mercedes -Benz that now offer the "Autonomous Valet" in their cars. That is very interesting. If companies like Tesla, Google, and Mercedes offer low-cost and safe vehicles, then I think the consumers will have more trust in these vehicles. After all, you are letting a computer control you. The vehicles should have systems that can let you take over manually should something fail. In conclusion, driverless cars are the call to this science fiction idea that captivated us long ago, now with rapid improvements in cost and safety, driverless vehicles I think should be able to be on the streets as well as in our garages.
Shelby Johnson (Massachusetts)
I think that driverless cars are a very good development in technology. Humans are prone to mistakes and distractions, as evidenced by the huge amount of car accidents that occur presently. Therefore, it is likely safer to have a computer make the choices in driving as it can make calculated judgments of safety fat more accurately than humans can. However, I think that the true benefit of automated cars will only be complete when all cars have been transitioned to driverless. Driverless cars are programmed to make the safest decisions in any situation, whereas humans may not always know what to do. While human drivers are still on the road, they may make poor decisions that will cause accidents that the driverless cars cannot avoid. Once all cars are driverless, there will be no room for human error and therefore there will not be accidents as all of the cars on the road will be programmed to move in the same way. I think that this development in the future will be integral to decreasing the number of car accidents and protecting people all across the road.
Harley HHHS (Hanover Horton, Michigan)
Personally,I think driverless cars are amazing. In theory. There seems to be too many places in which errors can occur. Can driverless cars detect possible threats before they occur? People driving cars are able to see the bicyclist about to cross the street, and the deer that's about to jump into the road. I do not feel that driverless cars are able to do these things. Perhaps driverless cars can be considered useful in cities where the speed limit is below 30 and people constantly need transportation, but until driverless cars can predict possible dangers before they occur I cannot honestly say I trust driverless cars.
Jennafer HHHS (Hanover)
I don't like the idea of a car driving itself.  The car would be in control, I would feel like I don't have any control.   There is so much that could go wrong, something could happen to the car, and you wouldn't know because you have not control, which could cause an accident.  I do feel that they are the way to the future, driverless cars are going to be the next big thing.  I’m not sure if a lot of people are going to by them though.  I don’t think that I will ever get into one, I wouldn’t feel safe riding in one.
Hillary Desmond (Massachusetts)
Driverless cars can be beneficial and harmful. They can be beneficial in the sense that it can allow disabled people to drive on their own. This car will allow people to feel more independent because they wouldn’t always have to rely on others to drive them. Apart from this clear benefit, driverless cars also have a risk of becoming more harmful. Because the driver will have little to no control over the car, the car is run like a computer. It could malfunction and shut down at anytime, like a computer could, and being able to know when it will shut down or glitch is extremely difficult. Also, because it is similar to a computer, the car can become easy to hack. This is dangerous because someone could take control of your car and crash it, which causes obvious harm to yourself. Personally, I would not drive a driverless car. Aside from the possible issues with the car, having driverless cars and possibly replacing regular cars with them would take away from the right of passage that everyone has the opportunity to face; a license. Learning to drive and getting a license is exciting and something that people look forward to. Without needing the knowledge on how to drive, the excitement is lost. No more waiting until 16, no challenge, and a missing step into adulthood. I think that this point above all is one that would cause me to not support driverless cars because I enjoy being able to learn something new and having some control with my life as a teenager.
Hal Warren (Massachusetts)
Driverless cars have always been somewhat exciting to me. I feel as though a lot of people find them appealing because we don’t have to do anything. We sit in our car and we watch as it drives us where we want, there is no work involved and that makes it all that more appealing. I don’t personally have a real opinion on the subject, I don’t think we should or shouldn’t have these cars. Perhaps not every single car should be driverless in order to give people a choice, but if someone wants a driverless car then they can get it. Driverless cars can be scary. We question how safe it could be, if it will inevitably kill us. We also think that driverless cars are fun and exciting. New technology is always interesting, people love to test new products because it’s very exciting to try out these futuristic items. I do see how there is no avoiding this, the future is here and technological innovations are bound to happen. There’s not much to be done about these innovations but to just sit back and watch the world change. The fear that some feel regarding the future is easy to understand, but we as humans need to realize that there is nothing we can do. The future is bound to come, things are bound to change.
Ava Daly (Massachusetts)
Personally, I would never go into a driverless car. The thought of getting into a vehicle that nobody has control over is very scary. If something were to be wrong with the car, or any other driverless car on the road, it could be very detrimental, and harm people. Although the thought of a car driving itself is very cool and could give opportunities to many people who can't drive, the thought of putting my life in technologies hands, where even the smallest thing in wiring could make the car crash, where the driver has no hope and has to accept the fate. Bad whether or ice that could affect the detectors is life threatening, and people can't not go out on days of bad whether that could potentially be the reason their car can't detect the animal in front of their car. Although driverless cars seem very cool, it is still very scary and I do not think I will ever find myself riding in one.
Michael Ward (Massachusetts)
Driverless cars are very interesting as they use advanced technology and GPS to drive a person to a certain destination for them. Personally I would not ride in a driverless car. The invention is very new to world and is bound to have errors. Also there are many bad drivers on the road. If a bad driver were to swerve into your lane or almost hit you there would be no way to change direction since the car is self driving and is following a specific route. I do, however, believe that driverless cars are the future. If everyone had self driving cars there would less accidents. Accidents would be decreased because there would be less bad drivers on the roads that don't follow the rules of the road. People would also not have to worry about speeding, drinking at parties, and falling asleep at the wheel because the car is driving for you at a safe rate following the rules of the road.
Ann Nguyen (Massachusetts)
I think that driverless cars are dangerous to drivers and passengers, and that they should not be trusted for safe rides. I'm glad that researchers and scientists are developing new technology to better the future, but I don't think that further advancements should be made in motorist and/or mechanical services. A driverless car is bound to have its faults and defects; a physical operator is needed to guarantee total maintenance of the vehicle. In addition to the uncertainty involved with driverless cars, I believe that driverless cars will reduce people's focus and productivity in the real world. As people, we learn many important life skills from driving a car by ourselves. It is a privilege that makes our understanding of adulthood possible, and an autonomous machine will not help us achieve that.
AryannaHHHS (Hanover, MI)
Driver less cars always fascinated me. If I was given an offer to ride in one I would do it in a heartbeat. I have a fear of driving in cars because I’m afraid of crashing, and usually I would be slightly skeptical of a driver less car handling very well. But after reading the article about the guys experience with the test car and how well it responded to its surroundings, I believe it could be an amazing and useful change in the future. It could allow people with disabilities like being blind to drive. As the article stated, it could also reduce the death rate caused by fatal car accidents. So yes, I think it could be the way of the future.
Judy HHHS (Michigan)
I don't think we should have driverless cars. I would find it awfully hard to put my trust and life in the hands of a technologically powered vehicle. I wouldn't ride in one because I would be worried that something would malfunction. What would we do about the outside factors? Bad weather, icy roads, or animals crossing our paths? Even if they are engineered to avoid and adapt to these things they surely can't be 100% successful all the time. I do believe that they may be the way of the future but I will never be fully comfortable with driverless cars.
Zachary F. HHHS (North America)
Self driving cars are a very good idea but there are three downsides to them which is that they can be hacked into to possibly do bodily harm, malfunctions, and with this driving everywhere for you people will lose even more of their sense of direction. It is known that the cars can be hacked into and in some cases it has been used for some very bad reasons. Malfunctions are more likely to happen with electrical currents on a motherboard than with an old car that uses the physics of mechanics without a possible "glitch". It is known that when G.P.S. came to the public that we lost a little bit of our sense of direction due to depending on it so much and now when it seems you could just watch a movie while driving that takes even the aspect of memorizing locations so that you possibly wouldn't even need G.P.S. anymore.
Eryn HHHS (Michigan)
I think that driverless cars are not the safest thing that someone would think. Would I ever ride in a driverless car? No, I would not ride in a driverless car just because how technology now and days it doesn't sound that safe. I do think that they are the way of the future. If they are already talking about having them they are more likely to be in the future.
Brandon HHHS (mi)
I think that driverless cars would be a bad idea because there is so much that could go wrong with them and possibly kill or hurt someone I think that if the cars are moving there should be someone that is driving the vehicle it should not be a computer because the computer can't have every problem that could happen on its database i would not ride in one these cars because the computer could malfunction and possible start driving the car everywhere I don't think that they are the way to the future because if they start to hurt people then people will start to not buy them and then they will probably go out of business
Grayson HHHS (Michigan)
I have always been scared of the thought of cars that could drive themselves. On the other hand, I do believe that it could be beneficial to those with disabilities. I know that the new Tesla car is able to drive itself and have heard good reviews about it, but what would happen if it was snowing out and the tires weren't able to control what was going on or if someone suddenly stopped in front of you and you couldn't stop fast enough? I honestly would probably never ride in a driverless car unless I was in an open road where no one drove on, or if I was with someone who knew what they were doing. As I get older, I know there will be many cars that will be driverless because that has been the vision for a long time now.
JuliaHHHS (Hanover)
I think that driverless cars are very dangerous. I also think it's weird how they work. I think it's very unsafe for people to get in them, knowing they could make a wrong turn at any time. I would never ride in one, I would be too scared. Although I wish they weren't, I definitely do think they are a way of the future. With technology slowly taking over, I know these will be coming soon.
Hayden HHHS (Mrs Jobs Classroom)
Driver less cars are the way of the future, but i would be very hesitant to ride in one because technology has tendencies to fail. You should not put your life in danger just because you want to be lazy with the idea of driving. I think driver less cars are a great technological advancement and people will go crazy about them, I also think they will be good for the economy because of the amount of purchases that this product will bring.
Ashleigh HHHS (Michigan)
I would probably never ride in a driverless car. I like the control that I have whenever I am driving normally. However, it could be a universal development for other people who may have disabilities and it would just be an easier way to drive in general. What would happen though, if there was a person in the road and then a car driving in the opposite direction of your car? since the car is made to have certain safety features to avoid accidents, would it hit the car, the person, or swerve off the road in order to not hit either but then possibly injure the driver? There are many different factors that could still cause accidents.
Josselynn HHHS (Hanover)
I think that we should have driverless cars, but not every car should be driverless. I’m afraid something would happen and malfunction. I think the self driving cars are the future but it shouldn't be a main thing. I hope there isn't a time in the future that the self driving car would take over and we forget about actually driving cars. I think it's great and there should be more. I would like to have more testing done and seeing if it’s safe.
Edwyn HHHS (School)
I don't really think driver less cars are the future as long as they are cars that are to expensive for most people. It will be a rich only thing, with maybe some people going into debt to get it. Fifty thousand dollars is more than some people make in a year, and would take years to pay off a loan, which usually also has interest, so add on a few more years. I would probably ride one if only because it would be a brand new car.
Christian HHHS (Hanover Horton)
I think that driverless cars are dangerous. I say this because there is no one that is in control of the car. I would never want to ride in this car because I wouldn't want a chance of anything bad to happen to me. I think that they will be a way of the future in 20 years. Driverless cars will eventually evolve but it will definitely take time before that happens.
Noah HHHS (Michigan)
I would ride in a driverless car before I rode in a car with a human being behind the wheel. I support driverless cars as they would cause fewer accidents and save lives. I do realize that there are ethical questions for driverless cars and we need those to be answered. Questions such as who’s safety should a car prioritize need to be answered. I also understand that many are uncomfortable with the need for a driverless car. However I am greatly in favor of a computer specifically programmed to drive versus a human being who is far to capable of being distracted.
Landon (HHHS)
I think that driverless cars are a huge step towards more advanced technology. It makes driving less stressful because you are not the one behind the wheel. Even though the technology in our world increases every day, mistakes can happen and malfunctions can occur. This is one of the negative effects of using driverless cars. Once these cars are fully developed, I think they will make a positive impact on our society
Logan HHHS (hanover)
I think they are an accident waiting to happen. I wouldn't every ride in one, because its not safe. They are 110% the way of the future, but still unsafe.
ZachL.HHHS (hanover)
I think driverless cars are a huge advancement for the future. Driverless cars could even be safer to drive. Soon, I feel like these cars will be the new taxis or ubers. With the technology we have today, if we make an all electric, driverless car, it will be the future for transportation.
Zach H HHHS (Hanover Horton)
I would drive in a driverless car because I feel like technology can react faster than us and smarter than us. I also believe that they are the way of the future.
Jacob HHHS (Hanover)
I don’t like the driverless cars, I’m not going to trust technology to protect my life in a car. I might later on in life trust the driverless cars when technology improves more.
paola (milano)
Driverless cars could represent the future for people with disability, especially blind people. Using these types of car they will be able to go everywhere on their own. Furthermore it's common knowledge that technology has a lower error percentage than humans. So it can be the solution for many cars' accidents. However the driverless cars must be tested several times before spread throughout.
Vi (NYC)
Driverless cars, in a few years' time would become 'the thing'. Guess I'll be seeing fewer of my fellow humans interacting with each other. Moreover, like any other technology, it brings with it new problems and solutions to old ones. We may see a drop in the accident rates, but I think this would be compensated for by people misusing it for all sorts of things.
Razeen Akbar (King of Prussia, PA)
Personally, I find driverless cars to be a blessing and a curse in society. They are definitely useful innovations, as they can be driven without the need of a driver operating the steering wheel. Another benefit of these self-driving cars are if they have the ability to parallel park for you. Parallel parking, although apart of any standard driving test to get your license, is one of the hardest thing to master when it comes to driving. People who've done their test a long time ago still forget how to parallel park themselves in situations when it is necessary. If the self-driving car can do that amongst other things, then it could easily be the greatest new car to come out. Then again, without someone being able to steer the wheel, this could lead to many accidents, including accidents on the road, as well as break-ins, and things of that nature. I would be scared to be in a car that no one is operating because of something goes wrong, there's no way to control the car at the last second to stop the car from crashing. The car would continue to swerve out of control, and that's quite scary to think about.
Barrington Richards (Pennslvania)
Driverless cars are a huge jump in the latest technology made possible in our environment. The programming needed to do this requires a specialist in mathematics, engineering, and groups with creative minds, otherwise this wouldn't be made possible for the pleasure of the many future customers waiting in line for purchase. Many people will see this opportunity to spend their precious money on this luscious, most likely comfortable, self-driving car.
Patrick Ward (King of Prussia, Pennsylvania)
I feel that driverless cars are a very spectacular thing that really proves how smart the human race really is, and how much we are achieving. I do not know if I would drive in one yet, simply because it is just the beginning of them. I do think that I would go in a driverless car in the future when they would be more advanced then they currently are right now. I do believe they are the way of the future. In the future In the future I can see people mainly using this for long car rides. They can get to places without having to drive and sitting back, relaxing and going to sleep till their destination.
Addison Liney (King of Prussia, PA)
Driverless cars may be appealing but they could potentially be used against us. The risk of accident with the use of this new mechanic could be on an uprising. With all technology, it can easily malfunction and something could go horribly wrong. This is the same with self-driving cars, it is just a matter of time until someone is killed in these types of cars. I hate to be so critical, but it is the reality. No "robots" can function as well as humans can.
Makena Liney (King of Prussia, PA)
Driverless cars are a great invention for today. I would love to ride in a self driving car because it would be so fun, but would also be really nervous just in case the car crashes. I believe that self driving cars are the way of the future. This is because these cars are a new way of technology that I thought would be way further in then now.
Francesca C (Pennsylvania)
I think that driverless cars are a huge step towards more advanced technology. It makes driving less stressful because you are not the one behind the wheel. Even though the technology in our world increases every day, mistakes can happen and malfunctions can occur. This is one of the negative effects of using driverless cars. Once these cars are fully developed, I think they will make a positive impact on our society.
Ron (Denver)
I would ride in driverless car, the experience is not that much different than riding in the passengers seat, or riding in an airplane. Driving a car gives us the illusion of control.
Chinazo Amaefuna (PA)
I think driverless cars can be helpful, but can very dangerous. I would not ride in one because if it goes out of control I will have no way of stopping it and could get hurt or worse. They are the way of the future because they show how cars are improving.
IN (KOP PA)
Driverless cars are a great invention in today's society. This is because in today's world everyone is in a rush at one and is trying to multitask, and to be safe driverless cars can make it easier in one way. Another reason why driverless cars are a good invention is when teens are just learning how to drive; they can the experience of sitting behind the wheel. Although there are many good reasons why driverless cars are a good invention, but there are many negative reasons. Safety is also something that is a concern. When operating a car that you don't have control on it can be nerve racking and cause much stress. I would never want a driverless car no matter how safe because there is no better operating car than a car that is operated by a driver.
Julia (PA)
Driverless cars are becoming bigger and bigger today in society, but many don't realize that with all of the pros, there is also plenty of cons to add. First off, these cars are fairly newer invention, meaning that they have not been tested all of the way through, and makers are most likely learning from an owner's mistakes. With that said, this can cause dangers on the road, such as the car being hacked. Anything can be hacked nowadays and really nothing is safe from it. There are bad people out there, which could hack and ruin the lives of many, not just the driver's life. As well as hacking issues, a car could also malfunction, machines and humans both make mistakes, they aren't perfect. Driverless cars are a great new innovation to the world, but should be taken with precautions. People shouldn't jump right in to try them without knowing the risks.
Hannah Hope (Pennsylvania)
I think that driverless cars are really cool, and they could be a big help once they are perfected. People could put their cars in autopilot mode while they figure out directions, so that they don't crash or hit something. These cars could eliminate crashes, especially from drunk or careless drivers, but again they have to be perfected first.
Frantz (Utah)
I have a 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country. They "autopilot" is really very basic right now. I have to pay a lot of attention to it or else it would crash at times or run red lights. I can't say that it is at all driverless. More like driver assistance if I want to check my phone and I'm behind another car.
Olivia Rotondo (Pennsylvania)
Driverless cars are a great invention for today's society. Our society is so fast and quick, so having a car that could drive while humans finish work would make many people's lives easier. However, I would be completely scared to be in a car operated by itself. Not having any control of the machine or car that I am completely scares me. Things happen, mistakes are made, and machines fail. I would love to see driverless cars, but I will not be in one until I know that it is completely safe.
Brooke Myers (King of Prussia)
A driverless car is where a car can drive without a driver. I think it is both an advantage and disadvantage to society because the cars are less likely to get in accidents with human mistakes but they could be hacked. Has anyone thought about what the consequences are of having a driverless car? Is anyone else worried that someone could hack into one and commit a dangerous crime? Am I the only person who is asking these questions?

I feel as though driverless cars have many great upsides, and many horrible downsides. For as to why I don't like them, they would need lots of security to prevent hacking. It may seem paranoid, but if you look at things like pacemakers, insulin pumps, and ATMs, they are very easy to hack and control. If these driverless cars were hacked, they could cause massive traffic accidents or be used to attack people. Other than that though, they don't see to be that bad. In my opinion, the amount of the upsides to self driving cars happens to outweigh the downsides. For instance, it would definitely prevent accidents, whether they would have been caused by texting while driving, or being under the influence. Another upside is that it would reduce the stress of driving and make driving long distances much easier.
