Next time you come into the city why not take mass transit so you won't have to worry about the cost of parking while waiting.
Joanne (Outside Boston)
While we went to different delis on the UWS (Zabar's catered my bat mitzvah in 1969), I too remember watching the men behind the counter slicing nova and being given a piece from the end of a long knife.

Subscribe to NYT puzzles. That always gives me something to do standing in line.

There are two kinds of lines. There are those that lead to something worth waiting for and there are those that cause you to wait to pay for it. I will tolerate the first kind, if I really want the reward. I never tolerate the second for any reason. Just ask the folks at the check-out area at Acme who re-shelve the cart-loads of stuff I leave behind.

After my active duty military service, I vowed that I would never again wait on line for food. And, for more than fifty years, I, pretty much, never have. I am either first or last at a buffet, I don't eat at restaurants that don't honor reservations and, if extremely tempted to eat at a place where lines are mandatory (like Shake Shack when if first opened in Madison Sq. Park), I only go on rainy days in off hours. I'm sure I missed some good meals, though.

Principles are fine, but unbendable rules can cause you to miss out on some of the best things in life.

The line at Yonah Schimmel's down the block is shorter and the knishes are sublime. Same comment with respect to Moshe's Bakery on 2d near 7th and ruggelach. Other places in NYC have equally good herring and smoked salmon.

Russ & Daughters has many items that no other store carries, and their quality is beyond compare.

Brings to mind wonderful things worth waiting on line for, like tickets for Shakespeare in the Park, a table at Chevy's on 42nd Street, tickets at TKTS. As worth-it as the lines at Disney World!

Thanks for sharing your story. Love the history. Certainly R&D is fantastic but, just a thought, Sable's on UES is pretty great if you want to skip the line.
Carrie (New Jersey)
I love sables but my heart belongs to Russ and Daughters !

I’m sure your husband appreciated the delicious gift Carrie, but even more, the love that inspired your journey to the Lower East Side and the wait on line to bring it to him. Thank you for a lovely story.
