However cliche, I have to call the Beatles my M. Butterfly. I moved around a lot as a kid, whether it was to new schools, houses, Cities, States, or Countries, I did it all! But a constant in my life was music. My parents had odd tastes, an ear for anything and they handed this down to me by sending me off on my own to listen to all our CD's while they unpacked. It was always something with a history or a story so with all of my listening came a lot of learning. Being a kid I asked questions and my mother being fanatical about music herself had answers. But sometimes she was busy working, packing, unpacking, or of course not in the mood to bear my incessant questioning. So on the day she told me we were leaving England and going to America she gave me the red and blue Beatles's albums, and a book telling me I could find all I needed to know if I looked and listened hard enough. It really seems stupid but I definitely would not be who I am if she had never handed me those CD's. The material was endless. There were so many songs to listen to! So many secrets to discover! and so many questions that needed answers. I started writing down my questions, and then writing down my answers once I'd found them. I started to write stories about the band and their adventures. I started to write songs about the things they wrote songs about, comparing how we felt about the matter. Music in general is very important to me, but without The Beatles I would not be the person I am today.

PART ONE: David Bowie is my M. Butterfly. He is an art form in himself in my opinion. Bowie had everything it took in every artistic aspect. His visual and audibly expressed creativity brought to life a powerful ethereal being that helped so many truly come to life, like I did. David was a man like no other, not afraid to not be what was really considered a man at the time. His bold makeup and fashion have inspired me just as much as his music has. As a sophomore in high school, I live every day in a new look. I love coordinating garments and makeup in a way that would make David be inspired by me. Bowie did improve my esteem, by allowing me to finally do what I have wanted to do forever, live as myself. Although Bowie was a man of many faces, his face was always his own, very much like mine is. I have changed styles so many times to the point that if you saw me once a year for the past 5 years, you would think I was a different person each time. But Bowie is not only an aesthetic inspiration to me, his music is also my "M. Butterfly." It makes me a happier person. I have a list of the wholesome things I encounter in my life, and waking up to Space Oddity as a 10 year old every day, was one of the first things to make it. There are few artists I could listen to at 7 am daily and not hate them.

One of the things I regret most is not seeing him when he was alive, but I had the opportunity to see Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Nirvana sing under pressure on stage with a fan playing drums. The fan was inspired by Bowie and Dave and he got a moment on stage that is unforgettable, like the moment I discovered my M. Butterfly.

My version of “M.Butterfly” is Led Zeppelin. Music is a big part of my life, and Led Zeppelin is for sure my favorite band. My day is never complete without listening to music. Zeppelin’s music has a very original sound that makes me feel a peaceful and overjoyed way. I love how all of their songs are different. Some are hard rock while others take a complete turn and turn out to be blues rock. I truly appreciate the way that all of their songs have meaning. They actually have thought out words, just like a poem, unlike some of the popular music today that teens my age might listen to. Each one of Zeppelin’s songs tell a story, and the actual instrumental music itself is superb. They actually play their own instruments, composing a beautiful sound. While listening to Zeppelin, I get lumps in my throat because I feel such a passion for their music. There are many other bands that create marvelous music like this as well. Listening to all of this music puts me in a positive mood, motivating me to go on with my day and be successful with my life. I personally do not know what I would do without music, for it is what inspires me the most.

A movie that has profoundly impacted me is the Japanese animated film "Your Name", otherwise known as "Kimi no na wa". Before I even saw the movie, I had heard people singing its praises, calling it a "masterpiece". I was a little wary of the film, thinking, "How good can it actually be?". That all changed when I sat down to watch it. Within the first 30 seconds, I found myself drawn into the gorgeous art style and intriguing opening scene. It's of a gorgeously rendered comet falling through the sky, which then transitions to two people, both mirroring each other in their thoughts. They're lamenting a certain feeling, the feeling of always searching for somebody or something. That feeling has possessed them, they think, "from that day...the day the stars fell", meaning ever since they saw the comet. After watching the opening theme sequence of the movie, an upbeat j-rock song accompanied by absolutely stunning visuals, I had fallen in love. This movie made me feel more than anything I've ever experienced from any other medium of entertainment. For example, When a certain sequence started playing, it brought a genuine smile to face. This had never happened before for some reason.I rewatched the scene over and over until the smile faded, but the feeling remained. This movie truly changed my life, showing me just how beautiful something can be.

An album that's shaped my life and made me who I am today is American Beauty by The Grateful Dead. It's a sonic masterpiece that gives me an immense feeling of joy after every listen. Iv'e learned so much from the various themes explored throughout the album such as love, loss, and finding happiness. This record has continuously kept me in a good place. I feel the same way Jason Kim did with "M.Butterfly" "I remember reading it and feeling so shaken. It blew my mind. It completely changed the way that I thought about writing." Every song for me was new and innovative, I had struck a true connection with the music. I can very easily agree with the article and every Artist's opinions on how such a great work can Inspire you and stay with you for your entire life. Just like Julia Cho from the article, I have been pushed to better my life and pursue music from this album alone. This mesmerizing composition by The Grateful Dead has shown me how great life can be and why it's worth living.

The up-and-coming band "Why Don't We" has personally changed my life. I am a big music-lover, and the first time I ever heard them, I was completely knocked away by how beautiful their music is. They have completely changed the way I view the world and have brought light in dark times. The messages and lyrics of their songs are amazing. They always promote tell their fans through their songs that you can be whoever you want to be, and no one can take that away from you. You decide your own destiny, and those who love you will assist you on your way. You are never alone and there is always someone right by your side, even when it feels like there isn't. Why Don't We is a big inspiration for me, and I hope they continue to inspire others.

the work of art that inspires me the most is the movie how to train your dragon from a animation studio called dream works. this movie inspires me because i really love animation and the messages and feelings a person can put into art then bring it to life truly makes me happy and strive to be able to put my own ideas to the big screen. but its not just that part that inspires me it the true meaning behind httyd, and that message is that you can find friends in unlikely places and that you shouldnt judge everyone by the bad done by the few of their kind. therefore this movie inspires me to try and be friends with anyone and everyone no matter what they look like, and that i need to work hard to be able to produce my own animations.

Dorothy Bryant's book "The Kin of Ata Are Waiting for You" begins badly and soon becomes magnificent. Probably read it 20 times over the years since it first came out.

The work of art that inspires me is cliche as of now,but I still hold it in high regards.Lin Manuel-Miranda's "Hamilton" inspires me to remember the people who paved the way for America Today. It also inspires me through it's song and rap lyrics to live life and make my part in someone else's story so they can tell mine.

A work of art that changed my life was Shane Koyczan's poem, 'To This Day'. It is a monologue about bullying and how it impacted his life and the lives of two people he knows. He explains how he was called names like 'pork chop' when he was a kid, and this girl he knew got bullied in school, so she is insecure and sad now, despite everyone trying to tell her how beautiful she is, and he tells about a boy who was depressed and turned to drugs. He says how people can be bullied and they might think that their lives are ruined, but there is always a way out. This came into my life at a great time because I had started getting into stupid kid drama that was starting to take over my life. I was always sad and I felt like no one would really understand, until I heard this one day in dance class and I was overwhelmed by emotion and I can safely say I haven't felt the same since. Now, every time I start to feel upset about bullying and drama, I listen to this again and I feel like I'm not alone anymore.

My own "M.Butterfly" is a song. This song is Girls/Girls/Boys by Panic! At the Disco. Girls/Girls/Boys inspires to to work for a world without hate. It inspires me to work for a world with equality. The song is about being yourself, and not really caring what others think. Listening to this song makes me realize that. It taught me that I should be myself, and not care what other think. Knowing this song exists helps me understand and accept myself. The music piece helps me let go of all of my worries and stress. Panic! At the Disco is an amazing musical group, and many of their songs has helped me. The one that has helped me the most is Girls/Girls/Boys. Teaching me to accept myself and others.

The work of art that has changed my life is Makoto Shinkai's, Kimi no Na wa. In the movie, both characters experience a huge change in their lives and they have to learn to cope with it. In this case, their appearances change entirely. This movie has showed me that I can be confident in whoever I am and in whatever I look like.
