Nothing better than a good spit take. Loved your story.

"Sophistication?," thy name was never Jerry Lewis. Had you seen "Psycho," even as an 8 yr old in 1960, I suspect you would have eschewed all things "shower" for the rest of your natural days.

Somehow, no matter the source, spitting water on, especially a child, doesn't seem funny - if that's what Granny found humorous, it's probably good she kept her humor to herself.....!!

"And oh did my grandmother laugh." Apparently without reservation.

A rich and great story on several levels! Harris, thank you for sharing.

Beautifully written and entertaining story. Except I don't think she had a reserved sense of humor, but a little warped! Reminds me of the Woody Allen joke of the rabbi "who was said to have inspired many pogroms with his sense of humor." Oy! Glad you turned out so well from all indications.

Maybe "you had to be there." And fyi, "nisht geshtoygn" would not be "an abbreviation," it would be a euphemism, and only delicately defined as "nonsense."
The Compleat Grammarian (Isle of Manhattan)
Actually, it is “an abbreviation of a phrase,” just as the author claimed it to be.

You made me laugh. Thank you.

Thanks for your story, Harris. There’s nothing as genuine as childlike honesty. You inspired me to go to YouTube to watch a smattering of spit takes. In my imagination, I can hear your grandmother’s belly laugh.
