Be careful what you wish for Mr. Penn. I seem to remember you gloating when this story first appeared. Now not so much.

if the inimitable mr penn is scared of a cartel hit squad, perhaps he shouldn't have knowingly and willingly consorted with the head of the world's most ruthless one.

Lying with dogs gets you fleas every time.

Don't be insulting to dogs.

I find it ironic that Sean Penn is worried about Mexico's finest coming after him. I'd say, the fact he DID NOT assist in this evil man's capture, should put him at risk!

Consequences for one's actions... Perhaps the best idea would have been to consider that beforehand.

If his life may truly be in danger because of potential misrepresentations in the film, the producers should sit down with him at the very least and seriously consider making appropriate changes for the sake of accuracy and to protect him from harm. If they stick to their story and he goes on record contradicting what's being presented, perception is reality and, if he is hurt or killed as a result, I can't imagine the producers or anyone involved would want that on their conscience. There is little to lose at this point in having a conversation, as all of the publicity to date and going forward will only help them achieve their goals at the box office regardless of what they decide to do. Many of the commenters clearly disagree and, if something should happen to Sean Penn, they obviously have no compassion or concern for his safety which is such a sad commentary on the lack of humanity of so many individuals these days.

“to the extent that Mr. Penn may be in any physical danger, it is as result of his decision to meet with El Chapo in 2015.” hard to argue with this. One of the easiest ways to avoid being killed by murderous drug lords is to not have any interactions with murdering drug lords.

Me thinks Sean Penn not very smart.

Sean knew what he was doing...when you lie down with dogs you get fleas....or in this case drug running soldiers who will probably seek his demise.

Anyone that anyone that knows Sean Penn knows that he would never help the US government apprehend a despicable criminal like El Chapo, so he has nothing to worry about.
atheist (in your head)
Penn now knows how POTUS Trump feels toward Fake News. Ironic.
cheryl (yorktown)
And they are both deranged? Or liars, who created their own fake news to rail about?
Truth (CT)
It seems to boil down to the fact, according to the article, that Penn fears that how he was portrayed may get him killed. While he probably should have thought about that before meeting with a notorious drug king-pin in the first place, it would seem that he has a public platform to correct the record as he sees fit. I don't know what else he can expect.

Don't worry Sean, no one is ever going to accuse you of being a patriot and helping the US governement

Loud mouthed liberal that believes he can say anything, do anything and meet anyone and then cry wolf when he feels threatened. Welcome to the real world.
Dotard (Where Am I?)
The irony is you voted for Trump and still wrote this comment.
cheryl (yorktown)
No, I think he may think he's Oliver Stone. Plus We real liberals tend to hold back from saying "anything to anyone" . . . and often are the first to questions our own motives. I don't claim him for my own.

There's a difference between being a real journalist and playing journalist. Penn put himself in a dangerous situation, and for what? Anyone who read his Rolling Stone article knows it contains very little insight into El Chapo and his world. It's more an account of Penn's privileged meeting, the circumstances that led to it and a ridiculous transcript of El Chapo saying nothing compelling. Journalists write as a service to their readers. Penn's work -- in this case -- seems to only serve himself. The fact that he's now flexing his Hollywood muscle to control someone else's account of the meeting only furthers that assumption.
David (Oceanside, NY)
So Penn is asking for censorship just think for one second if someone wanted to do that to one of his projects.
James (Boulder CO)
Mr. Penn you were negligent with your safety, certainly it was foreseeable that your meeting could put you in danger. Where you thinking your fame would protect you, from someone who killed thousands of people. If you’re meeting with Mr. Guzman in any way lead to his capture. I don’t think a Netflix production is going to matter too much, in whether you live or die. Body guard up Spicolli.
cheryl (yorktown)
Penn has always acted like the tough guy, unafraid to go to extremes to exercise his 'artistic' integrity. I did wonder what he was thinking about in getting entangled with a real bad guy - - for entertainment -- did he think El Chapo was a misunderstood man who would be charmed by Penn's ability to bond with him? Hubris. Get into the bear's cage; chances are you will get hurt. The bear doesn't care who you are. Penn was responsible for his own decisions - stupid ones included -and for creating any danger he has put himself in. The lawsuit is frivolous - and designed to gain more publicity. maybe he could sue his other lawyers or agent instead - ?

TED.. My thoughts exactly. Both him and Ms. del Castillo wanting the limelight.
Anne (Seattle)
Yeah right,, Penn is trying to clear the lane for his own documentary or fictional movie. Del Castillo and company got there first, a woman and a telenovela actor at that.
TED338 (Sarasota)
Penn wanted the notoriety or he would not have had the meeting or written about it afterwards. His problems are of his own making.
