have had practically same experience; if U live in NYC finding a reliable barber can be difficult especially if U move to new hood; i had many barbers I 2o years a great Russian barber in SOHO; a great barber in Washington Heights but it took a couple disaster cuts before I found him; now my present barber actually got into an argument with the guy in the same shop I use in Jamaica; I went to the guy in one cahir gave hie couple cahnces and didn't like , I saw how the other guy was doing a fade and went to him the next time and that's when the arguing over a customer ensued and I flat out told the 1st barber I didn't like his cut and am going to your pal over here an that was that; I now have the best barber I believe I ever had ; I feel good and believe I look good when I get a cut from him

Sounds like my experience with nail salons. I like the basics. Weak nails so just trimmed very short, no color with a gel coat to strenghten. First few visits they do as you ask. Over time they seem to get resentful that I don't go for all the flourishes and artistry so while the manicure doesnt get any cheaper the workmanship gets slipshod and they treat your visit like an intrusion angrily wielding the trimmers. Theyve cut my fingers a couple of times. Thats when I know its time to change salons again.

I have been cutting my own hair for the last 2 years. In that time, I've avoided significant frustration by not waiting in lines or structuring entire days around quirky business hours; I've saved about $500; and I get better haircuts (most of the time). Highly recommended.

At least tell us how you manage to cut your own hair and have it look good.

How difficult is it to tell your barber to better his performance? "Fix the sideburns please, they don't look even". When did this become such a difficult line to say? I swear there is something wrong with our culture.

Very funny story! Thanks for sharing. I am almost certain that the old barber will be terminated from the new location. Just give it some time and make consider a back up barber at another location. Brooklyn is filled with barbershops.

I handle this by going to different barber shops. A bad haircut and I don't go back. The barbers recognize me but none of them get possessive. Of course the other option is to just shave your head.

Interesting how a barber starts out giving a great haircut and then gets complacent as time goes by. Is that what most of us do in life?

Maybe it would be easier for you to move again.

For women, it's almost like a second marriage. Lol

That’s a unique, interesting story of coincidence, but I hope the barber doesn’t read it in the Times and recognize himself! "My Hair" - tune of “Mein Herr” You have to understand I can’t ignore my hair That’s why I need a barber who’ll care for my hair If you mess up, it takes weeks to restore my hair So if you / Ruin my do Someone new / Will come through Then we’re through, toodle-oo. Bye, bye, I need my hair I beg and plead: My hair - Needs lots of special care and not this barber. He makes me nuts, I swear I’ll spill my guts and share That once he cuts my hair, it’s bye-bye. (big ending) Bye-bye, it’s gone - it’s on the floor And once I walk outside the door Say bye-bye, to me and my hair!

Fired? I thought barbers rented their chairs and space.

Stories like this are why I love The Times. Maybe it's because I had to get frequent haircuts in the Navy, but I just can't imagine going 8 weeks between haircuts!

My wife pesters me to leave my hair alone. She likes it long. I'm cheap, so it all works out.

"I was fired from the old barber shop". LOL. Just what a customer wants to hear. Can't fire my barber--I'm married to her. My left sideburn has been longer then the right for so many years that I rarely notice anymore. Plus there is now substantially less hair on my head (more grows out of my ears then on my head), so how much damage can she do? Grin and bear it amigo--and who wants to appear perfect anyway, like a Ken doll? Take notice the guy next to you--he likely has a similar haircut.

It may be not that the sideburns are a little off but that the ears are a little off. The issue may be avoided if the author grows a beard.
