Quick, get rid of the cat in your kitchen (article photo) before the inspectors show up!
Madeleine Nichols (CT)
NO NO cats are great, specially red/ginger cats! It wouldn't be an Egyptian story without a cat! Great article, than you Mr. El Gamasy !
N Yorker (New York, NY)
It wouldn't be a bodega without a bodega cat.
Elizabeth Carlisle (Chicago)
Never thought the NYT would have the guts to print a story such as this one. Mr. El-Gamasy is an actual real person with independent thought. He isn't cowed to mimic blathering Trump-hate exhibited ad nauseam by the rest of the MSM. He explains the good and bad. Mr. E-G speaks to the average person. What a concept! Too much emphasis was placed on his "being a sandwich maker". Not surprising from a medium that fawns over spineless elitists devoid of common sense. He is a successful entrepreneur. A position that requires courage and perseverance, attributes that are foreign to journalists blinded by herd mentality. Mr. El-Gamasy would be a refreshing change in the national discourse if a major network took him on. Problem is, the MSM can't tolerate journalists capable of independent thought.

People like Mr. El-Gamasy is what make America Great. I guess the guy who lives in the White House Doesn't think we are great yet.

Bodega pundit- Yay! Tucker, Hannity- Blecch.
Nuria (New Orleans )
My favorite story this week!

Who could guess that the secret to sounding, and maybe being, smart on television turns out to be listening to people? Very few American media pundits listen to anyone except themseves and each other and boy, does it show.

Anyone wondering what "American values" are needs to read this story.
David Pan (Washington DC)
America! What a country! This is the reason why those Google hipsters' vending machine idea is no match for the real bodega. It's all about the real human being inside. Immigrants like Mr. El-Gamasy is what makes this country great.

Dear NYT , Please give us more stories like this one .

Let journalists learn from this. This guy talks to PEOPLE. I fear we hear too much, especially on cable tv, from commentators who talk only to each other and we have paid a heavy price for it.
I-qün Wu (Cupertino, Ca.)
Fabulous. Glad to have you here, Mr. El-Gamasy. You sound like a great addition to the country. Wish your store were more conveniently located for me.
APippa (Baltimore)
I would love to try his bacon, egg and cheese sandwich...
Joshua Schwartz (Ramat-Gan, Israel)
Good story. There is nothing wrong with an educated bodega owner commenting on the news. The Weddings section of the NYT today has a Harvard MBA opening a restaurant. However, I wonder whether that cat behind the counter should be inside the bodega. Are animals allowed in food establishments?
Therese McGill (Leawood, KS)
Betters cat than a rat!
Sam (Los Angeles)
No, they're not allowed in food establishments, but here's a nice NYT article I remember about why you'll see them nonetheless. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/21/nyregion/21cats.html?mcubz=0

Every bodega has a cat. They keep the mice/rats away.

Wonderful success story. He clearly is educated and I would have liked more elaboration on his career as a teacher in Egypt. Once here he made sure to learn the language and must have worked hard as he started all over from the bottom and now owns his bodega. Congrats to the professional woman who recognized his potential and married him. In predicting Trump's victory he was more prescient than the Times. Maybe you should hire him. Am I the only Manhattanite considering taking the train to his bodega for a chat and a sandwich.

You have to love this story! Only in America! Really, it's true. What I don't get is why Americans don't get to hear his broadcasts in English here. After all, his political analyses of American politics are much more accurate than our American network pundits!
NK (NYC)
Fabulous story! Fabulous guy!
Sarah (Astoria)
Gonna have to venture out to Ridgewood !! Craft beer, bacon egg and cheese sandwich, and an awesome owner. Love this.
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
Hopefully the leaders of the DNC will read this article and take note that Mr. El-Gamasy actually listened to his customers and noted "their rancor around the Democratic Party's treatment of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont". Some are still castigating Bernie for daring to challenge Hillary! And I'm not a so-called "Bernie Bro" either, voted for Hillary and think she would have made a good President.
USexpat (Northeast England)
Trump could learn something by watching Mr. El-Gamasy at work and on the news. Mr. El-Gamasy moves effortlessly between worlds within minutes, serves a diverse constituency, and speaks English far better than Trump.
BitcoinKhaleesi (DC)
This is a wonderful story! This guy is awesome and really represents what it TRULY is to be America; hard work and entrepreneurship.
Anne-Marie Hislop (Chicago)
Good for him! That entrepreneurial spirit is very American (and yet, also, very, very Egyptian). Mr. El-Gamasy is an excellent example of the good immigration does for the country.
Gamma Rae (San Diego)
Love this story. Sometimes I think newer residents in the US may understand what"s happening in our country now better than those of us who were born, raised and aged here. Serving a cross section of the public in a Queens bodega, engaging in political dialogue while actually listening has given him a broader perspective of the American public than the political pundits on American TV. I'd love to hear his broadcast as well.
David (Esquinasi)
I would love to hear Mr. El Gamasy's reports on American television. He could explain the American political landscape to both Egyptians and American audiences.
Tiffany (New York)
Solid read, great story.
Luis (Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines)
It's nice to see that Egyptians are being exposed to international news. Very good story.
Natalie (New York)
Good to see that beyond our borders political commentary is entrusted to individuals more credentialed, knowledgeable and competent than the Sean Hannity's of this world.
H Bolando (ny, ny)
Yet another reason I love living in the amazing borough of Queens! Great story!
GC (<br/>)
Great story! This whole thing should be made into a movie. I love the line about "would you like a sandwich, I know the guy." Very droll! Congrats to Mr. El-Gamasy on his success!
Margaret Trefny (London, UK)
In this time of Brexit and Trump, this article is a blessing.
Mark (Czech)
Explain please. I don't understand. Thank you
Harris Silver (NYC)
Great story.

This was so nice to read.An american muslim who is not a terrorist or illegal. Please do articles and videos everyweek interviewing american muslims who are hard working and love america.I am a conservative but I love every ethnic group.I constantly read books written by foreigners about their birth nation.Your newspaper can bring this country together by doing more articles like this.I disagree with your columnists. However,I read your paper cover to cover on line.Your readership would increase online by doing more ethnic pieces.I guarantee you that hundreds of people who shop at his bodega will be reading your paper online.I know that a lot of people I talk to never read your paper. This will bring a lot of new readers.People will tell other people.
