Thousands Give Trump Bronx Cheers as He Returns to Manhattan Home

Rather than a parade where the local boy returns home triumphant, this man gets thousands lining the streets alright, but in protest and disdain.

Rather than riding in on the back of a convertible, waving at adoring crowds, this man slinks in by going the wrong way down one way streets.

Instead of cheers and words of praise, the people lining this man's limousine route yell boos and chant "Shame! Shame!"

And this is the homecoming President of the United States.

Wouldn't you think this just might give him pause to think that he was failing at being the President of "all the people" that he claimed he was going to be?

Looking at the accompanying picture, the diversity in age, race, gender and ethnicity that were protesting, I'd say he should take pause on whether he is the President of ANY of the people he should be representing, other than his "base", including the only recently disavowed (under great pressure) KKK, Nazi's and White Supremacists.

But Trump being the man he is, he will insist these protesters are "professionals" brought in from out of state to harass him (like the alt-right thugs actually brought in to Charlottesville specifically to cause violence - a fact he never mentioned).

He will spend his three days high above them in his isolated and obscenely garish aerie, literally going about his own business instead of the countries, and be whisked away to another of his isolated golfing resorts to "not" vacation.

A man of the people - in his own mind.

Dear America,
To know him is to loathe him.
Sincerely,
His Hometown Neighbors

What is the difference between a maniacally raging driver of an automobile crashing deliberately into the midst of a crowd of angry demonstrators and a truly MAD president at the helm of what once was a beacon of democratic pluralism in the free world?

Degree only. Each supports the other. As He, Himself, has said.
Mark Esposito (Bronx)
Hillary Clinton, who looked pretty good to begin with, looks better every day, doesn't she?
Martha (Northfield, MA)
Yeah, thanks to all the many people who decry Trump but didn't bother voting for her. She sure wasn't perfect, but she was a far cry from what we've got now. Once it was clear that Bernie wasn't going to win, it should have been common sense to vote for Clinton. Even Bernie himself said so. I consider Democrats and liberals who didn't vote for her partly to blame for the mess we're in.
Pine Mountain Man (Way West Of The Pecos)
Dear "president" trump: those people outside your building are protesting YOU. They're protesting against your ignorance, residing in the office of President of the United States.
Fact: no person since at least 1865 (Andrew Johnson, since you have no clue) was less suited for the office you occupy.
Fact: You weren't chosen by a majority of the people, who now consider you a clear and present danger to the security of our nation.
Fact: You are an international embarrassment, far surpassing whomever is in second place.
Fact: You appear to be an intellectual lightweight because you have never even read a biography, of anyone, though you profess you've "always wanted to."
Fact: saying you wait for the facts before speaking is just another self-serving lie. Trust me on this: you don't have a stitch on.
Fact: Your "election" was illegitimate in the minds of millions, and history has yet to make that final determination, but it's not looking good for you.
Prediction: this country will not survive four years of your disgraceful tweets, utterances, and shocking inability to be "presidential."
Sad. You are a sad excuse for a representative of our country. Please surrender, as Lee did, to avoid harming our nation irrevocably.

"Feels good to be home after seven months..."

Wish that you would just stay there.

I know there is much more important information to talk about in the article, but since Fifth Avenue runs north and south, I question where is the "south side of Fifth Avenue" where the sanitation trucks were parked. Also saw a picture of it with the caption White Trash Trucks, which is so appropriate.
Karen (StL)
So is Trump at home gathering up all his tax returns to release or busy shredding?
Dan (Sandy, ut)
The latter.
Rodrian Roadeye (Pottsville,PA)
You shoulda seen the size of that crowd folks. Biggest crowd ever to welcome me back. Bronx Cheer? Fake news again.
Max Deitenbeck (East Texas)
He is such a coward.
Michael Dubinsky (<a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>)
Sounds more like jeers not cheers.

The public has to keep showing up for protests, until Trump's term is ended, however it ends---even though the protests may fuel Trump’s hostility. Just think if there were NO public protests, what would that say about our passive democracy? And what permission would that give Trump and the rw to go even further out in their disrespect for the citizen majority?

Trump and his friends usually react by doubling down with enflamed, paranoid sense of grievance. Then Trump uses this to fire up his base of naïve, duped voters. Hence his 1st speech about the Virginia tragedy, refusing to name names.

If we don't publicly protest it will be worse. The media must get the cameras out there and interview protesters. Plus report on Trump’s every grotesque tweet and action. But, just don’t obsess on them 24/7 and don’t over fixate on palace intrigue. Trump ain’t going to change his stripes no matter who he fires and hires.

Balance the coverage with realistic discussion of all the issues affecting we the people. That means more explanation of:
1. Health care alternative systems, common in other democracies, that our media shamefully ignores.
2. Coverage of groups aiming to reverse Citizens United, which would restore some influence on our govt by we the people. AND maybe help bring in more responsible candidates, avoiding a future Trump type.

As a former New Yorker, thank you New York for saying it like it is: NEW YORK HATES YOU.
John (Woodbury, NJ)
Look at the condemnation on many sides... on many sides.
Dan (Sandy, ut)
You need to finish: "Not all that are condemning me are bad, just a few are bad".
ReggieM (Florida)
New Yorkers are straight talkers. That this callous fear monger occupies the White House and calls the city his birthplace is a source of chagrin. When New Yorkers protest the madman at Trump Tower, they affirm, “We are in no way like him.”

Trump is eager to put fear-filled blinders on our eyes. He succeeded to a sickening degree among the alt-right. Today, he retweets a cartoon of a Trump train mowing down CNN for daring to report the facts. He issues sick, violent messages from the office of the president. The other, two co-equal branches of government are mute when they should be shouting, “We are in no way like him.”
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
There's one nice thing about the fact that Trump has his home here. When his disastrous presidency is finally over, assuming civilization survives it, then he really won't be able to come back home.

Oh he thinks he's going to march back home with flowers tossed at him from cheering crowds, but it's not going to go that way at all. With the exceptions of Staten Island and the extremely ignorant and bigoted, New York hates Trump, and our hatred grows by the day.

I think he should keep in mind too, when he's an ex-president, he will not be getting police protection to the tune of $300,000 per day. He will get two Secret Service bodyguards, like every other ex-president. So I think the smart move would be never to return to NYC, and give up on living here for the rest of his life. And I hope that hurts him deeply, and causes immeasurable regret.
Robert Penn Warren Admirer (Due West SC)
I am so proud of the pushback against Trump. We must do this to ensure freedom. Tyrants want us to agree with them and go along to get along. Do not take that route. Thank God for American resistance to Trump. Our forefathers would be proud of us.
Eugene Gorrin (Union, NJ)
President Donald J. Trump is a fake president - in words, deeds, intellect and substance.

The Faker-in-Chief.
manta666 (new york, ny)
When the Women's March reached Trump Tower, we chanted (en masse) "New York Hates You!"

Still true.

I love this town!
Ron Epstein (NYC)
How symbolic that he's going the wrong way on a one-way street .
dre (NYC)
Most New Yorkers are decent, caring and tolerant human beings. We live in a diverse city and you respect people, let them live their lives and they return the favor. And you help those in need as you can.

Trump is not a decent human being. He's a vile ignoramus that embodies the worst of humanity. Most NY's can't stand him. We wish he could be put in a barrel and sent out to sea.
Jack Murray (NYC)
So much free time on their hands! Don't these people have jobs? They can bash Trump and some of it may be justified, but they should thank their lucky stars that Hillary is not the POTUS!
KellyNYC (NYC)
Dissent is patriotic.
N.Smith (New York City)
Hillary wouldn't have a Steve Bannon in the White House -- or wait two days before publicly calling out white supremacists.
mt (Portland OR)
Don't the alt right protesters have jobs? They should attend to their own needs and stop whining about their "victmhood".
Blue Northwest (Portland, Oregon)
Bravo to these peaceful protesters in Manhattan!
Claire (Massachusetts)
Acceptable reasons for a rich president to shut down the most populous city in the US during the business week:

- a funeral
- a commencement address
- a significant event which requires the president's presence

Unacceptable reasons:

- taking a phone call
- feeling homesick despite having at least three other homes (White House, Bedminster, and Mar a Lago)

I can't even begin to imagine the monetary cost of shutting down multiple streets in NYC, having extra officers on duty, and providing extra security preparations, to say nothing of adding to the exhaustion of already-held-up commuters (who actually have to work to keep their jobs).
Martha Shelley (Portland, OR)
Why did you change the headline from "Thousands Give Trump a Bronx Cheer...." etc? I like that one much better.
N.Smith (New York City)
I was actually wondering the same thing. Maybe Bronx residents were insulted?...
Jim McGrath (<br/>)
This President has an obsessive need for attention in any form. Ignoring him is the ultimate protest. He hates it. Using legitimate media to monitor his behaviors for issues of consequence but ignoring him in all direct manner is the best approach. This requires Trump to respond to the so-called "fake media" while the public appears to ignore his moronic and childish behaviors. The man has all the emotional complexity of a three-year-old.
Loretta Marjorie Chardin (San Francisco)

Thousands of Losers Greet Trump as He Returns to Manhattan Home
Yellow Rose (CA)
I hope that these small signs of visible protest against Trump are indications that behind the scenes lots of people are working to ensure that we do not have a repeat of Trump. After seeing what happened in Charlottesville and Trump's response to it, I don't think our country could survive it if he won again. We are lost now, with Trump as our leader. How much more lost we can stand to be?
CJ13 (California)
Maybe Trump returned to the tower to destroy evidence.

The wheels of justice grind slowly, but exceedingly fine.

"Nuclear war is not a ratings game" -- I can't say it any better than that.
Linny (Michigan)
Watching the Trump presidency from here, is surreal. Whether it's the NYC protests or Trump's inane response to the vile racist protestors in Virginia, life in Michigan is eerily quiet. For the last month or so the local news has been talking about the Detroit riots, or rebellion (pick your description) of 1967. Peaceful gatherings marked an unpeaceful time as the "Detroit" movie premiered here to much fanfare and pride. This weekend at a local metro park, the kids shrieked and played on the water slides while the young mom's sunned in their swimsuits, casting an occasional eye to their children. Every now and then emails asking for volunteers for a statewide bipartisan effort pops up. But, still it feels like the quiet is a facade because under the surface, if asked, people will express their worries about the chief resident in the Whie House. What is overwhelming is the responses that reflect a sense of, 'What can we do? We have jobs, families, responsibilities. We have to live our life.' So the tension remains underground for now. What will happen if it erupts is anyone's guess. The hope is that more of the Congressional Republicans who looked the other way to get their Supreme Court seat, will exercise their power by putting the well being of our democracy first by doing what they can to stem the bleeding and restore integrity to the White House.
sarah Lilly (Brooklyn)
It's heartening to read these comments from all across America. Truly, you are here, and I will remember that at every rally, demonstration and educational event I attend until this President and his un-American regime are out of office. "Resist much, obey little" Walt Whitman.

"...and the U.S. is really my home!"

Really?? Is the US also the "home" of all Trump's bank accounts (when are we going to see those tax returns, Mr. Trump?), and is the US the home base for where all those DJ and Ivanka Trump's products are made by American workers on our home shores?

Home is where the heart is, and America the Beautiful is not where Trump's heart is!

O beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
Above thy fruited plain

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
AND CROWN THY GOOD WITH BROTHERHOOD
FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA!
Chuck Burton (Steilacoom, WA)
Perfect! He has been driving the wrong way on a one-way street since inauguration day.
David H. (Miami Beach, FL)
Seriously, Fox News is less biased than Fox News. It's unfortunate that it's now okay for mainstream media. I can feel the pain of the NY Times reporters protesting having to report on the Lynch/Clinton tarmac meeting. I had to unsubscribe from The Washington Post because i was receiving emails every few hours about the latest story being the "big one" for Trump...
John Lusk (Danbury,Connecticut)
You didn't need to do that. If you went to the settings section you could check what if anything you wanted to be notified of.
Dennis D. (New York City)
What other president in history could incite such vitriol upon returning to his home? Trump, of course. We who know him best have had Trump's number for decades. Eighty percent of us voted for Hillary. Anyone out there in the Hinterlands who thinks that it's because we are all liberal elitists here in the Big Apple are just the kind of misinformed and gullible blokes whom Trump has taken to the cleaners for ages. He took you suckers real good this time. Let US know when America returns to its greatness.

"...a holding pen for protestors"? In the City of New York in America?

I'm hoping New York City bills the Trump Organization for every single police officers time, every sanitation truck appropriately "filled with dirt," every expense for every piece of equipment or taxpayer-funded personnel.

"Good to be home....and the U.S. is really my home!" Oh, that's projecting the "likes of which no one has ever seen."

He is an unmitigated disaster as a president, a "leader," and a human being. Meanwhile, the value of the dollar internationally continues to tank.
Eddie Lew (New York City)
Elise, I guarantee when he is billed for this New York trip, he will manipulate it to come out of some other's pocket. That's what he's done his whole career, exploit others. He's a parasite.
terry brady (new jersey)
New York City can gather a crowd in a matter of moments and Trump might continue to be alert to his presence in midtown will automatically shut down everything. The crowd knows that "power corrupts" (R.P. Warren) and absolute power is shutting down Manhattan.
Avatar (New York)
As a New Yorker, I apologize to America and the world for Trump. He does not represent New York any more than he represents America.

NOT MY PRESIDENT!!!!
D.A.Oh (Middle America)
Why on Earth would a POTUS ever feel the need to add "... and the U.S. is really my home!" to a comment?

It's creepily revealing. Where else would his home be?

Could it have anything to do with his decades of rampant Russophilia and Eastern Bloc obsession, as seen in his taste in women, advisors and dictators?

Or is it the fact that he makes (and owes) most of money overseas despite convincing the poorly educated that he's a Nationalist?

Or that he knows that the long con is almost played out and the time to skip town is nearing?
ninibean (Boston MA)
Or he can't think of anything better to say.
John (Oak Park, IL)
If you seek coherent intellectual content in Trump's utterances, you're wasting your time. Look at the man as he speaks. Observe him closely; watch his body language, his roaming gaze, his awkward facial postures as he speaks. You can tell he is having trouble selecting and organizing the words from his limited vocabulary. Remember his original declaration that the ACA would "explode"? Presumably someone explained him that the correct word is "implode"...Whatever!
N.Smith (New York City)
Don't worry.
When Trump says "the U.S. is really my home" -- he doesn't mean New York City.
CD-Ra (Chicago, IL)
Besides Bannon, Gorka and Miller, how many more white supremacists has Trump hidden away in the WH? We the public need to know their names and see their faces. We the public want Trump's evil cabal removed from office. In fact, we want Trump removed from office since he is their accomplice.
vickijenssen (Nova scotia)
Trump is from Queens, not Manhattan. It's in his voice and in his attitude.

Queens did not vote for him either.
Donald Coureas (Virginia Beach, VA)
This conversation that took place during a rally against Trump in New York, may have brought up an issue that is tantamount to solving many of America's problems today. Ms. Black said that the president's rise to power was not about economics but about racism. Mr. Casavis, who was wearing a Make America Great Again cap, did not get a chance to respond. The two issues of racism and income inequality should not be bound together.
Trump got elected by saying he was going to bring jobs back to the manufacturing section which has been devastated by multinational corporation moves to foreign countries to increase profits. At the time of the election there was great consternation about the job loss in the US and the devastation on middle class workers.
On the issue of racism, the Republican party, since the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, were quick to welcome the southern democratic contingency who may have been racists.
President Nixon was elated and President Johnson was depressed because he knew that the GOP would greatly benefit from the shift of Democrats to the GOP. Those former Democrats are still very much a part of the Republican party and its ideology on race issues.
The Russian issue today is largely due to the fact that the oligarchs in Russia knew that with Trump in the White House they could join the oligarchs in America who control most of America's wealth.
This is the issue that remains, oligarchy or democracy for America?
westomoon (WA State)
Ms. Black said that the president's rise to power was not about economics but about racism. Mr. Casavis, who was wearing a Make America Great Again cap, did not get a chance to respond.

Read it again. Mr Casavis did indeed respond, and then Ms Black was chased off by a cop. Reading it, I wondered why she had to move, but apparently not Mr Casavis.
daniel wilton (spring lake nj)
I stand with New Yorkers.
N.Smith (New York City)
Like most everything else about Donald Trump, his tweet was laughable.
First he knocked the White House as being a "dump", now it's "very special".
New York City didn't vote for him, and clearly doesn't want him back -- but says it "feels good to be home after seven months."
Guess what? -- the protesters are back too.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
They know him best. Thanks, wish I was there.
Llewis (N Cal)
Trump claims the USA is his home. The USA is a garish hotel or golf course to this man who now threatens to destroy our Federal parks and reserves. Trump rolls back clean and water regulations, panders to dirty coal, and denies climate change. Please Trump get a home somewhere else.

Chris (Louisville)
Do you really believe the NYT would tell you the truth about the size of the crowds that cheered Trump?? To their credit, they do not hide their agenda at all. They are going out of their minds with the presence of Trump. Having been a leftist, I am changing my mind. There is something wrong here.
Kelle (New York)
What are you talking about? I was there. There were "thousands". As the NYTimes stated. They filled the block of 55th street, and then north of 57th to 59th streets. Plus, a group that marched from the library. It was impossible to see how many people because they were gathered in different locations, but "thousands" is accurate in my estimation.
mark (chicago)
From most reports I've read and from footage, it was far, far more than 1,000, likely in the 5,000+ range. Yet some people still believe Fox News and even more outrageous news sources such as Brietbart, Infowars, Gateway Pundit, etc. while dismissing the NYT and any other respectable, responsible, and fact-checkable news source as false. Alex Jones, who thinks the moon landing was faked, who thinks Sandy Hook was staged so the government could come to take people's guns, etc. etc.
Bizarre. SAD!!!! and a sign of why our country is so divided and supporting someone like Trump and his policies.
As an independent who believes we should actually believe in logic, reason, and truth, I don't believe you were ever left of center. Or if you were, you were one of many on both sides (and I'm definitely not saying they're equivalent in word or deed) who blindly follow without questioning.
Howard (NY)
I was at the rally last night. There were indeed thousands of people there. they lined several city blocks on both sides, sometimes 5 deep or more. Yet I personally saw no one "cheering" for Trump at all. What is untruthful about this story?
Susan (Boston)
trump is a coward.

"Cowardice is a trait wherein fear and excessive self-concern override doing or saying what is right, good, and of help to others or oneself in a time of need—it is the opposite of courage."
NYCagainstTrump (NYC)
I've lived in NYC for a few decades and the vast majority of New Yorkers have always seen Trump as a gaudy, self-obsessed joke. Trump is not welcome in his home town and doesn't represent what matters to most of us. Please, Trump, leave.
vickijenssen (Nova scotia)
Trump is not from Manhattan, he is from Queens: it 's in his speech and in his attitude.
NYCagainstTrump (NYC)
@vickyjennson NYC consists of 5 boroughs, including Queens, where I've lived the most. When I say our so-called president does not represent NYC, I'm referring to all of NYC, not just Manhattan, and when I say New Yorkers have laughed at him for years, it is not his accent I'm speaking of. It goes so far behind that!
Areef Choudhury (Katy)
Since we are a nation with welcoming arms, I suppose we really have to accept his claim, ' the U.S. is really my home!'.

On the other hand, if the non-bigoted Blacks and Whites were unconditionally and uncompromisingly demanding after the recent Portland incident (and many others like that before), then one less human could have fallen victim to the same. Selective anti-racism isn't self-serving.
lhong (New York)
Trump doesn't love this city. He loves his buildings and golf courses. He has nothing but contempt for the rest of it, and us.
Barbara (Canada)
"12 city sanitation trucks loaded with dirt were parked end to end to form a barrier on the south side of Fifth Avenue"

Sounds like a war zone. When extraordinary measures like this are required to protect a sitting president from his county's citizens, there is something very wrong. America is being reduced to a banana republic with an incompetent strongman as leader.
Jerry (New York)
How much longer?
John LeBaron (MA)
@ President Trump. "The White House is really special?" What? Really? That dump? What changed? Not you.

As for the Trump Tower protesters, bravo! All well and good. But it's all for nothing unless alls y'all vote! So, please hold those thoughts until 2018 and 2020 and spread the word relentlessly among your pals and allies.

If we fail to stop our national insanity soon, we'll have only ourselves to blame.

The photo says it all. Another reason why I love NYC!!!!

Where does the so-called Republican Party stand in this latest political disaster perpetrated by Donald Trump? Which members of Congress have spoken out against the president's behavior with regard to Charlottesville? How many of them are white supremacists? The public needs to know. What about Trump's advisors and cabinet members? How many besides Bannon and Sessions are
fascist leaning?
Richard E. Schiff (New York)
There is something I dislike about people having to alter their schedules so the rich can force drawbridges to open for their yachts, or highways to shut down for their limos.

New Yorkers are often inconvenienced for the frolic of the rich people, and Lord, they resent it.

This fraud we have posing as President, is screwing up traffic in New York and New Jersey, for his untimely and long vacation.

Please, go out of your way, to elect alternatives to the Republican stronghold they have now in Congress. Please start election parties; take busloads of friends and neighbors to the Poll in November. We must punish lawmakers for supporting anything Trump says or does,

It is time voters thought of their children and grandchildren instead of themselves.
Dhoppe (Texas)
I lived in the city for several yrs before relo to TX. You are absolutely right re. the impact to the city caused by the self-absorbed elitists. Now more than ever our vote matters. Forget black or white "lives matter".... we need to think larger "all lives matter, all votes matter".
Eddie Lew (New York City)
"There is something I dislike about people having to alter their schedules so the rich can force drawbridges to open for their yachts, or highways to shut down for their limos."

Richard, please. Show respect for your betters.
Aaron (Houston)
Sounds about right for a so-called "president" who is facing disaster on multiple fronts to just come off another extended vacation, then retreat to a lux condo hideout for a few days and then head back to the golf course, rather than be at the WH. And this is the person who tried to condemn other actual Presidents for taking any time off, from work they actually performed. It is so appropriate that garbage (waste) trucks were used to protect this loser.
MindTraffic (Chicago)
The garbage trucks should have been used to transport him.

Huh? A thousand?
I was there. Seven to ten thousand, easily - throughout the course of the early evening.

It's a shame people can't disagree in a polite manner. The very essence of the United States is dumped in the mud by both the Alt Right and those that get into scuffles with them. Mankind is a sorry lot for sure...
New Yorker (NYC)
False equivalency.

And, seriously, "scuffles"? Is that what you call vehicular homicide?
Nicolas (Montreal)
Not homicide, terrorism...
Mike Edison (New York City)
I think the Times under estimated the crowd size. I was there and there were a lot more than 1,000 people. On one Facebook page organizing the March there were over 16,000 people who said they would protest at Trump Tower yesterday. It was a tonic for the soul to see so many people there of many persuasions, ages, and issues. That is one thing Mr. Trump has done for America energized so many people to work against him.
Jackie (Missouri)
I like that. "If you want people to think you're a decent person, wear an 'Impeach Trump' pin." That pretty well sums it up.

"The city did not vote for him in the presidential election," is an understatement. He lost in a NYC landslide, with his home Congressional district (and mine) only giving him 13.5% of the vote. America, we told you.
Mountain Dragonfly (Candler NC)
He shouldn't have come home to Trump Tower. He SHOULD have gone to Charlottesville VA and given succor to the injured, the parents of the woman who was killed, the students, teachers and residents of this scene of destruction and hate. His tepid final response is not adequate. I have heard people who knew him personally declare is a compassion person with a good heart. I wonder how much they were paid to say that, otherwise why would they lick the boots of this disgusting representation of a human. I don't believe he has a heart, much less a soul. He is not our president. He is an excuse for a man who not only stole the office through gerrymandered districts that packed the Electoral College, but has defiled the office and our country since then. If anyone thinks that what happened in VA, read your history about Germany in 1939.
mark (chicago)
His biographer has apologize for writing a book that made Trump look good.

As someone who spend years following Trump and getting to know him and observe him intimately, he is the perfect person to judge Trump's character, and is now a vocal critic. Those who know him loathe him. At least the honest and honorable ones. Those who are easily charmed by Trump saying nice things that they want to hear, while ignoring who he is and what he does, make me ill.
susan levine (chapel hill, NC)
Good article in the Guardian written by 94 yr old stating that his generation also ridiculed Hilter when he came on the scene with many of the same remarks that people are making about trump. He said they just thought he was such a horrible person that "something" would be done about Hitler. The writer and his young friends kept enjoying their lives as they certain things would continue as they has always been in their lifetimes.
He fears America with trump in in the same situation as Germany when Hitler was getting power.
People should be aware that the rich in this country are preparing to flee if necessary; New Zealand is being over run with visa requests from wealthy Americans.

It must be said again and again: Trump is just the visible symptom of the malignancy that is the GOP and its supporters. Yes, by all means continue to state loudly and clearly that the man child has no clothes but never forget his sycophant courtiers who brought him to this lowly place are responsible for the misogynistic xenophobic racist hateful actions of this corrupt vacuous petulant infant terrible.
marty (andover, MA)
Those that "know" Trump resoundingly voted against him last November, with approx. 90% of the Manhattan vote going to Clinton. His pathological lying, deceitfulness and abject narcissism didn't fool Manhattanites. Unfortunately, it is taking far too long for his so-called "base" to come to the same conclusion. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence should understand by now that Trump's "policies" are designed only to enhance his celebrity and his wealth. He cares about nothing else. He cares not a whit about the coalminers (whom he abhors), the blue-collar types for whom he wants to take away their govt. supported healthcare, and of course, persons who aren't, ahem, caucasian. There can also be no doubt that his companies laundered illegally gotten Russian money through a myriad of real estate transactions over the past few years. Thankfully his stay in NYC will be a short one.
R.Kenney (Oklahoma)
Manhattan does not represent America.
westomoon (WA State)
Neither does Trump.
Martha (NY, NY)
Ah, but there are, Mr. or Ms. Kenney, a lot of us and we are, you should know, people, too.
Bigsister (New York)
Now that Trump is out of the White House during renovations, he and his band of pranksters should be barred from returning there.

Let them sully some other location.
MIMA (heartsny)
White House renovations? Gaudy gold junk all over? Hope not.
MlMA
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
Good for these New Yorkers! Ever since Nine Eleven, they have shown the rest of us how to be resilient and strong. They do not cower; they are not intimidated by thuggery. And now to these protesters, I say thank you for being our voices! How I wish I could be there today...
Phil Dunkle (Orlando, Fl)
To maintain my sanity these days I am trying the Buddhist idea of having compassion for Trump instead of disgust. After all, he is a fellow human being and is obviously in way over his head in his current role as world leader. Hopefully he will be back in the private sector soon before he does any real damage.
Jay Stark (Albion, MI)
Phil - I must agree with you, at least in spirit. I WANT to be all Zen about it, but then I think there is just too much this person can do to disrupt everyone's life. I have yet to find in myself the focus to be able to accept this as something I cannot change.
Hopefully, WE can change.
Alive and Well (Freedom City)
And with that approximate attitude in Tibet, China now occupies Tibet, razes the temples to put up gaudy hotels for tourists.

Sound familiar?
susan levine (chapel hill, NC)
Tell that to the Jews who peacefully waited for things to get better;
Compassion will result in more slaughter , it always has ,look to history .
This is not the time for marches, its time for action!
DSS (Ottawa)
Trump represents everything bad about America. He is the perfect Ugly American and the voice of all things wrong with America. The only way the country can survive is if he is removed from office in total disgrace. He has to go down in history as what not to be as President. If not, there will be worse characters to come and our democracy will end..
redmist (suffern,ny)
I only wish the other leaders of industry and local politians had the courage and decency to be publicly outraged and critical as these patriots.
Its not even something that is debatable. It demeans us all that the "leader" of this country dosen't have the moral compass to speak against bigotry and hatred.
As an American , I'm ashamed.
mark (chicago)
Trump is nothing but a shape-shifting, hypocritical bully. He has changed many of his positions that he held prior to running for president, most to represent the interests of big business and the very wealthiest of this country, or to the alt right and fake news followers, telling them whatever they want to hear. It doesn't matter if he is or isn't racist; he may care less about race personally, but he uses that to great effect for fear, hatred, and division. He could care less for the "little guy" that he pretended to really care about, the hard working Americans struggling to make a living. Perfect example: stacking his administration with billionaires and the very Wall Street people he so railed against.
This Army officer condemns Trump as one completely devoid of morals and values; he directly contradicts the ideals and values that made this country what it is today. Dodging the draft 5 times while pretending to be a pro-military president. Egotistical to the extreme, mean spirited schoolyard bully, who can't tell the truth to save his life. Most elementary school students have learned the basic lessons that he never will.
Without a basic shred of honor, courage, and truth, Trump is making America a shame and a sham, a laughingstock of the world. I have numerous friends and family overseas. Every single one of them says the same thing: the rest of the world hates America with a vengeance now. Not good for diplomacy, or business. SAD!!
ann (ct)
My late Dad a proud New Yorker, a Jew, and WW2 Vet would be so horrified by our president and his followers. I can hear him now saying he didn't give up four years of his life serving his country, fighting Facism and bigotry to protect people like them. That people, in this comment section, are still defending Trump's behavior is inconceivable to me. Sometimes there isn't two sides to a story. Sometimes there is a right and a wrong. Trump and his racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic followers are wrong. There is no other side.
Rita (NYC)
Your dad and my dad are rolling over in their graves as veterans of WW2. My dad was of color but he supported the WW2 war effort and fought for America and its ideals and promises. Perhaps America didn't keep all of its promises, but it made a real effort to do so. Back in the day, Black and Jewish people jointed hands together and fought to create the American dream. Today, we are faced by the Neo-Nazis, Alt-Right and the DJT ilk cowards who have lied repeatedly and now continue their destruction of the America we all know exists.
ann (ct)
Never did I imagine we would slide back so far into the worst parts of our history. There are people in the Republican Party who could be heroes. Right now stand up and denounce Trump. He and his followers are one and the same. I refuse to be ashamed of my country because I know how much good there is. I saw the Women's March in Washington but I am ashamed that these people think they are the good Americans. We know what they are.
Susan (Boston)
I hope the ongoing protest strategy is to line EVERY street and alley from which one could access trumptower, illegally or legally, so he cannot evade the protestors again.
Cheryl (Yorktown)
The idea is appealing, but the NYPD is under orders, and probably the most efficient law enforcement agency in the country when it comes to crowd control. Irksome if demonstrating, when you want to be in the right place, politically, but effective at minimizing mayhem.
Alive and Well (Freedom City)
I was at the event last night. The police were AWESOME. They had exactly the right attitude: Do their job. Keep the sitting president safe. Be vigilant yet relaxed. Allowed the crowds to do what they want peacefully--dance, sing, shout "Shame, shame, shame." Talk and laugh with the protestors. No nonsense attitude about anything untoward.

Everything was polite and orderly and safe.

Perfection. Hurray for NYC police department! This is what democracy looks like.
Micki Fox (Tennessee)
Good for you--you're right. PEACEFULLY support or protest the sitting President. NYPD impressive.
Ravenna (NY)
Best sign yet: "Choose your Torch" illustrated by the torches of Trump's torch and pitchfork crowd vs. the torch held aloft by the Statue of Liberty.

"....Bring them the tempest-tossed to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door".
Jean (Holland Ohio)
Yes! It is a great photo with this story: the contrast between Neo-Nazi crowd with their torches of fire versus the great lady, the Statue of Liberty who says " I lift my lamp!".
Barry Borella (New Hampshire)
"The wretched refuse of their teeming shore..."
Damolo (KY)
Of course he'll say the crowd of protesters was hugely over-estimated...that their were only twenty or thirty, tops....
nessa (NYC)
The protesters are mainly UFTers worried about the loss of power of their Democrat allies. Hey, they might lose $1000 in their pensions years from now. A bunch of socialist cheapskates.
L (<br/>)
If you are responding to a NYTimes article, you must read read it, right? So what's your excuse for making a statement that has no reasons or facts to support it?
John Edelmann (Arlington VA)
Trump should move out of NY permanently. It would be even better if he moved out of the US, but who would take him? Oh, Putin would of course!
Cheryl (Yorktown)
Nah, he turned out to be a liability for Putin as well. Saudi Arabia...
DrT (Columbus, Ohio)
Not if cannot bring the United States as a dowry....
mB (Charlottesville, VA)
Sadly, it is not just Trump. The GOP has been race-baiting for decades; favors government-action to prevent "reverse discrimination" over race, ethnic, gender, etc., discrimination; dilutes the voice of minorities in politics by its widespread use of gerrymandering; and does little to nothing to prevent sex and sexual orientation discrimination. In short, the GOP pays lip service to the American ideal that "All men are created equal" as the party simultaneously acts to undermine that very ideal.
mt (Portland OR)
The "willie Horton" story. "Welfare queens". They have been using it for a while.
Bunny (Long Beach Ca)
Trump needs to be in Washington DC not NYC They don't want the dictator there any more than the people in Washington DC. They are finding out Trump colluded with the Russians by trying to set up meetings with his buddy Putin. Trump ought to go to Russia along with his Melania and family. They are a family owned dictatorship and the New Yorkers know this that is why they are protesting the this so called Russian lover pf Putin and Trump acts talks and walks like one.
Miss Ley (New York)
Trump called the White House a Dump. And New Yorkers are not going to let him dump on them. He is no longer welcome and can stay holed up at his Faulty Tower.
Dandy (Maine)
Thanks so much for your activism, New Yorkers! Makes me nostalgic for NYC where I had lived for years! But am very sad for passing of the cabdriver and send heartfelt condolences to his family.
Marilynn (<br/>)
It's hard to imagine that Trump Tower doesn't have a helipad on top. Why the 6 mile motorcade? Oh, ego?
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The hazards of landing helicopters on midtown towers were demonstrated by a crash on what was then called the Pan Am Building.
Marilynn (<br/>)
Actually, I looked it up. Helipads in NYC were outlawed after 9/11. For once, maybe it wasn't his ego. :)
carol goldstein (new york)
I'm the opposite of pro-Trump but facts are facts. In this case the fact is there is no such helipad and for good reason. Helicopter landings have been banned in Manhattan except on the periphery since one tumbled off the Met Life building at 42nd Street some years ago. High rises and resulting street canyons create wind gusts that are copter unfriendly. That aside, the architecture of Trump Tower's many offsets has no flat area where a helicopter could land. I'm sure the NYPD and Secret Service would have preferred a closer delivery by helicopter if they thought it could be pulled off safely.
Gerld hoefen (rochester ny)
Reality check dont these protestors have job to go to ,sorry your iphones made in china .Everything is made in china an we are all comunist symtizers for buying those products with american dallors.
John Edelmann (Arlington VA)
Did you notice that GE is closing its plant in Rochester and moving it to China? Where is Trump for you now? Perhaps you should look closer to home and don't worry about New Yorkers (city) that are protesting to save our democracy!
Ann Marie Pozzini (Long Island, NY)
The protests were in the late afternoon and through the evening. In NYC, as in many big cities, people work shifts and are available to protest our racist, puppet of Vladimir Putin.
Karen B (Brooklyn)
You make your own choices. There is plenty of products made in the US. Oh wait, you would have to pay more in order for workers to earn enough to live on. That means you cannot consume so much, which is bad for the "great American economy." That $$ only stretches so far, doesn't it.
Aquavidis (San Diego)
Recalling the FBI raid on Manafort's home, Trump has decided that, perhaps, it's time he tidied up HIS home.
gc (chicago)
So agree with this... why else would he come back for the weekend...
Manderine (Manhattan)
Deutscher bank, the bank he owes billions to, already has the goods on Donny. It's just a matter of timing.
Mueller and the independent investigation has the rest.
Costantino Volpe (Wrentham Ma)
Problem is trump loves the attention, whether good or bad. The worst thing you could do to him is ignore him. Everything he does is for attention, with no regard to consequences.
Sprite (USA)
True. And true for a lot of his followers.
Cheryl (Yorktown)
Not only does he love attention, but he actually needs to have "enemies" to make him feel alive. If ignored, he escalates his provocative behavior to demand the spotlight again.
Kate De Braose (Roswell, NM)
That might possibly be the case because Mr. Trump's father was a very wealthy man.
Cynthia (Paris)
"And the US is really my home" who says this? Keep up the heat newyorkers. This man is not welcome anywhere. As I say to people when they point out he's from NYC, "he's from Queens." With my apologies to Queens.
Neil (Manhattan)
Queens is NYC. And last time I checked, Trump is welcome in half the country.
maria5553 (nyc)
trump is only welcome in racist enclaves of the USA, sane people do not want him.
westomoon (WA State)
But he doesn't spend time in the dreary hell-holes that do welcome him. He's not exactly beating a path to Alabama, or even Michigan, much less Virginia.
Mike (NYC)
So the major complaints are about racism and the rhetoric employed in response to North Korea.

Somehow I am not buying that this man from tolerant Manhattan, formerly from Queens, who has Jewish relatives including grandkids and who has worked with black people his entire life, is racist.

As far as the comments Trump dropped as to North Korea go, what was he supposed to tell them, to do as they wished? That said, after making his fire and fury statement the NK's did tone down their threats.

So demonstrate all you like. Bring an umbrella. Don't let the rain get your heads too water-logged.
Chris (New York)
He is also the same guy who was found guilty twice for housing discrimination.
jilliantate (Brooklyn)
Mike, he may not be racist himself, but he is willing to play to them in order to gain those electoral districts. He has allowed white nationalists to proliferate and spread rhetoric for his own political gains. Ultimately, he is all about dividing Americas people so we won't notice when he carves up the country and distributes its resources and wealth among his oligarch buddies, whether it be his Cabinet or Putin.
John Edelmann (Arlington VA)
Have you listened to Trump at all? Obviously not.
William Menke (Swarthmore, PA)
Breaking the law (wrong way on one way street) to protect the President from protesters), must gall the Secret Service. What's next, armoured vehicle and special ops?
carol goldstein (new york)
That sort of traffic thing has been happening for so long that it isn't even an issue. As a pedestrian on a closed-to-vehicles side street in midtown I gave a thumbs down to GWB who was riding in a suburban-type vehicle with an open side door where a man with a machine gun was stationed. It would have been after spring 2003 because my beef was with the war in Iraq.
