It doesn't take a lot of insight to conclude Trump just realized most of his base doesn't like, homosexuality, or trans gender identification. He may be shoring up his base but I doubt he will expand it.

"Administration officials insisted that the timing of the three actions was coincidental."
Sure. Trump cleverly decided to wait until after he had his hair, nails and eyelashes done on Tuesday.

Trump does enjoy accessorizing. And the Pope too. They are needy, thus too slow with all that extra accessory weight. ---- Well thank the Stars that Hollywood has standards, and Trump never realized his dream of becoming a famous movie actor. (rumor, but I think that is true). The SNL Spicey Podium is more valuable than the real one in the White House Press Room.
The military routinely has "reductions in force" (RIF) - the last being in 2016 - where they eliminated (due to budget constraints) 14,000 people - including 10,000 officers - many of whom had multiple combat tours.
So now come the transgenders, who claim they want to be treated equally, and then when they are shown the door (in tiny numbers) - just like so many other vets before them - they claim they are being "discriminated" against?
Can't have it both ways, boys and girls - the way the military treats the straights is the same way it treats you - unless you think you deserve special treatment.

Of course there is a difference.
Overall, the military is losing people. There's one fact. Here is the other. Transgender people are being targeted for removal.

You mean the military is now tossing people out strictly because they're straight? Either that's a terrible policy, or you're a terrible liar.

Trump is "under the influence", in the pocket of 1) The Family Research Council (FRC), a “Christian” action group, and 2) its legislative affiliate, "FRC Action". I have a library of more than 1300 emails sent out by them over the past 4 years. FRC is extremely active in the political domain, at all levels. Those “3 punches against gay rights” are just one example of FRC/Trump.
An FRC "Action Alert" was sent out on 7/24/17: "Take Action: Help stop funding of sex-reassignment efforts in military". A small part of the lies in that notice included, "With the costs estimated for sex-reassignment surgery and hormones, the military could purchase twenty-two F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Planes, which cost $166.7 million each, or 116 Chinook Helicopters, which cost $31.8 million each, or 3,700 Tomahawk missiles, which are $1 million each, or a new Destroyer for the Navy, which would be about $3.5 billion. Spending billions of dollars on sex-reassignment surgeries and hormones when the military has other priorities that would actually ensure its effectiveness in war, and America's safety is irresponsible."
FRC sponsors the "Values Voter Summit", an annual gathering of “social conservatives”. Speakers at the next annual event (October) include Trump, Pence, McConnell, Ryan, Cruz, Priebus, Price, Carson, Rubio, Sessions and other conservative politicians. Other speakers of note include Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

If Trump is so hot to control DOD budget by eliminating costs associated with transgender procedures, I propose: no coverage for viagara and other similar meds; prohibit active duty personnel from pro-creating . which surely costs alot. More simply, he should just sign an executive order creating an army of Unsullied, ala Game of Thrones.
4
Actually, it looks like 3 negatives against the Heterosexuals. Does Trump represent the Heterosexuals? Just asking.
3
Look at the way Trump's attempts to repeal Obamacare have made it more popular than ever before. Perhaps similarly his current assault on LGBTQ citizens could prompt millions of Americans to question whether heterosexuality is really a viable lifestyle choice after all. Or Christianity.
2
When one has the right to vote, buy a home, work a job, make a loan, etc., then there isn't much else to complain about. The reality is that everyone does not have to love you.
2
The point is that LGBTQ people are NOT currently guaranteed all of those rights. We're asking for justice, not love.
9
It is not the same to have the right, than being able to do something, The thing is that instead of making sure that more people can act on those rights that you mentioned, president Trump is making this ridiculous policy to keep some of his supporters happy ,
4
The Apprentice once again has reversed a position he took last year or was it last month? Does it matter? We are dealing with his yo-yo approach to his job as per usual. Changing directions regularly as a matter of course. Consistently inconsistent.
The good thing is he continues to alienate one more group who thought that they had his support. Soon, there will be no one supporting him and he will be "burping and chirping" on a curb someplace out of office.

To all those friends and family that continue to claim that their vote for Trump was about the economy, or about jobs, or about change - THIS IS precisely what the Trump administration is all about - deflecting from political chaos through division, hatred, and fear. Unless you speak up about these atrocities, you are no better. It is no longer acceptable to simply continue screaming liberal or democrat or blaming Obama and Hillary. Good people of conscience must begin speaking out and demanding that this hatred stop, before it is too late for this nation to recover. Any person that thinks himself a person of faith must now dig deep, as it is impossible to read and cherish the words and examples of Christ and simultaneously think these abhorrent actions acceptable. I never understood how Nazis came to power, how good people were led to hate and murder. After only six months, I now understand. And I am sad.
9
more red meat thrown to the Trumpsters to distract from the GOP's inability to govern and the President's many and mounting troubles.
pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, for I am Oz, the all powerful.
Sad!

3
Actually, Pottree, I think this was part of the plan all along. Only the timing may have been adjusted to deflect attention from all the treason.
4
Putin and Trump the same game. Sickening! Red States you had better wake up before we are all gone. And by the way don't celebrate- you will get the least from these guys!
4
I hope I am not out of line, but I must call attention to some other Times' commentaries in today's issue: Sally Yates asking for help defending against Trump; another titled "This Is Why Americans Hate Congress"; and another titled "The Generals Can't Save Us From Trump". Am I the only reader who is now very frightened about this current Administration? And there must be many others feeling the same. What can be done to solve this giant inability to run our country. Help !
5
Educate the citizenry. If you look carefully, the is a huge divide between red and blue states when it comes to education funding and quality.
1
As much as I dislike Trump and Sessions, technically, they are right. The 1964 Civil Rights Act doesn't cover LGTB rights. It didn't cover Age Discrimination either. This was added a few years later by Congress. It originally didn't cover sex discrimination but a NY Congressman had it added hoping that adding sex discrimination would derail the legislation. It backfired.
Congress added Age to the discrimination categories. It is up to Congress to add protections for LGTB folks as many states have. In terms of Civil Rights Protections, it is Congress that is at fault here. If Congress had done what it should, no President would be able to go against it.

9
who knew human rights was so complicated?
6
Where is the commentary from the LGBT people who voted for him?
7
Whatever happened to the Fourteenth Amendment-- equal protection under the law? Maybe I shouldn't have to keep paying taxes to support a country that keeps telling me that my life doesn't matter and stripping away my basic civil liberties.
20
Women still don't have all those rights. Why should I? (Bad joke.)
2
Can women and children, blacks, browns, Asians, the sick, the poor, the disabled and the rest of us rabble be far behind?
8
Is there an obscure mechanism that allows the citizenry to exile its president and his minions? Not that any other country would roll out the welcome mat...
6
One can only wonder how much republicans must hate themselves to work from a place hating everyone and everything except their own white, heterosexual selves.
10
Don't forget the Dennis Hasterts, Larry Craigs, Mark Foleys and their innumerable brethren legislating hate from the depths of their closets.
2
I think more radical wings of the LGBTQQIP2SAA community can take some blame for this. The alphabet soup of sexual and gender orientations pushed very hard on very conventional mores, like separating the sexes (rather than gender identities) in places like bathrooms, communal showers and locker rooms.
My wife and I are very liberal, and even we could see that some rights were being trampled by the demands of a vocal minority. The lack of sensitivity to concerns people who were not ready to move so quickly has fueled the backlash we are seeing now in Trump's new rules.
Activist were not content with accommodations like gender neutral facilities. They would push for the rights of the pre-op trans male to use the men's shower if they so desired.
Social mores don't turn on a dime, and we're seeing now what happens when legitimate questions are called trans-phobic.

"Very liberal"?
Obviously you are liberal because your human rights are secure!
Try to put yourself in the place of others when you criticize the struggle for a society built on the rights granted to ALL by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution!

Very liberal? Possibly, but I don't think so.
All we are demanding is to be treated the same as everyone else. There have been no reported problems with transgender people. There have been virtually no reported problems with gay people in the military, once they stopped kicking gay people out for existing. There have been no reported problems with transgender people using the "wrong" restroom, DESPITE the spate of laws which claim that this is the only way to deal with a problem that clearly DOES NOT EXIST.
It is bigotry, and nothing but bigotry.

Trump threw the LGBT community under the bus to deflect attention away from the Russian investigation. And so far it is working. We all have to hope that the powers that be at the pentagon will step up and protect the rights of the people serving in our military.
19
it is impossible to overstate his hatred, pettiness and lack of integrity or honesty
22
The fact that the White House thinks it is in their best interest to attack the LGBT community tells the world how desperate they are. This is a failing administration.
21
While we're calling them bigots instead of traitors, they're still winning.
3
Okay, a side issue to distract the nation from the healthcare bill, the Sessions mess, the turmoil with Spicer, Priebus, Scaramucci , et al.
Except that it's not a side issue: it's a nasty, often illegal, always immoral campaign to diminish the lives of a whole bunch of US citizens.
It's not a side issue because it's an emulation of what Russia is doing, not to speak of the even worse horrors of Chechnya.
This is not the USA I want to live in. My country respects the individuality and the rights of all its people. Whatever one's sexual orientation, this weakens and damages our nation for all of us.

These moves are meant to distract, but woe to Donald Trump, Robert Mueller and his team will not bite.
11
As the pressure on Russia heats up and the Administration blunders along and the Republicans can't legislate their way out of a paper bag, the operatives with access to Trump are going down the list of targets to distract everyone and shore up the base - xenophobia (Muslim ban), push for wall funding (check), denigrate immigrants (Ohio Rally), don't forget homophobia (Brief/Brownback), and who could let go of the hatred for Trans folks? (Trans in military). Oh, and don't forget now the Republicans in the house have asked for an investigation into HRC (again).
There is no "there there" - the agenda remains hate and distraction.

11
Those in the LGBT community who voted for Trump hopefully now realize that Trump took their vote and then sent them down the river. Wake up. Think about your vote next time.
10
Can Peter Thiel even vote in the U.S.? The only others I can think of are locked into top-secret servitude styling Donald's and Melania's hair.
2
SO, by this definition, a straight person could be fired by a gay employer for no reason...After this, maybe gay employers should do just that, and fire straight employees based on their sexual orientation. But this wont happen because the gay community is a compassionate one and doesnt stoop to the same despicable levels of Sessions and Trump and those who agree...but maybe they should.
10
Trump punches way below his weight class. Why do this to other Americans? Transgender folks who want to serve in the military? Needless intervention in an employment suit? Some anti-gay, backward governor? This is truly anti-American. Trump is so anti-American, so un-American, he hates America, so when his presidency is finished the country will collectively agree that it was a complete waste of time.
Thanks to the 100K voters in key electoral states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania for giving us this mess.

This sudden attack on gays is right out of the Putin playbook. The return to outright bigotry is just the latest blow to our democracy and social cohesion. Let's hope the courts overrule these flagrant and regressive violations of a civil society that has made such great progress in the last decade.
9
We have to be honest in talking about these things. With regard to the amicus brief in Zarda v. Altitude express, it is not at all uncommon for the Justice Department to do such a thing. The Justice Department is also correct: Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act bars discrimination in the workplace based on “race, color, religion, sex or national origin.” Sex refers to the physical makeup of the person, not the act.
In our system of government it is up to the legislature - the Congress - to change the law if they see fit. The court's role is to interpret it. As written, the law is clear and the position of the Justice Department is perfectly defensible.

2
For the ethically challenged.
2
we're not taking about the letter of the law, but the spirit of the current administration. They are mean spirited beyond belief. this is not the way we treat citizens!!!
It's perfectly clear that Trump can nominate anyone he see's fit into an ambassadorship, including a monkey or a tortoise. Defensible on what grounds is the larger question. The law is clear that Trump can nominate an illiterate person as an ambassador. Under what grounds is this defensible seems to me the more rational question. But then again this society, its economic system, and many of its institutions are too often based on irrational assumptions, often with no ethical grounds on which to stand. Laws reflect the will of the ruling classes who control the systems that erect such laws. Who ensures that these classes operate infallibly to rationally ground such laws?
1
On Thursday, I told my 24-year-old gay son, a recent college grad who is looking for a teaching position, to leave the country. I fear for his safety as Trump has made it clear he has no problem with discriminating against a specific segment of society, which is tacit approval to tolerate hate toward that segment of society. Also, by finding a country that is more tolerant, his chances of finding a job will probably get better, since it will be a place that obviously places much value on an educated public.
10
More than welcome here in Canada. We've had human rights for the LGBT community since the 1980"s, and marriage rights since 2003. Politicians here long ago realized the importance of equal rights for all of our citizens.
No one has to hide who they are, and we pretty much all get along.
It's scary what's happening in the USA today.

There are many places he would be very welcome in the US, although it appears at the moment that a State that elected Mike Pence Governor isn't one of them
Whatever he chooses, America could use his vote, his help and his example, especially as he plans to teach.
Remember that a clear majority of Americans rejected Trump and chose:

So a citizen (ALL citizens) have NO inherant right to defent their country? That is the REAL question, if it is a question at all.
1
The US is looking more indefensible every day now.
4
Allowing blacks, Jews, women, and gays to serve was also considered "social engineering" by opponents. They all (nor surprisingly)actually made our military stronger.
26
All hatred and contempt for anyone different from the members of a persons immediate tribe represents fear of the other. When we were hunter gatherers, fear of the other served to keep the small tribal units safe from death and destruction by other tribes. But, we're no longer hunter gatherers, are we? Sadly, the instinct is deep in our DNA. It seems to me that the radical conservatives and the radical Christians are composed of people who have the least faith in their fellow human beings.
The Europeans, or most of them, after a millennium of slaughtering each other over Christianity, Politics, land, and just about anything else you care to mention, have recognized that we are all one people and have tried to make their societies and economies follow that principle.
The followers of Donald Trump, the members of his administration, and those who venerate him in the Congress and the Courts, are leftover remnants of the hunter gatherer's fear of the other. They variously hate Black People, people of any color except pure white, Indians, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and anyone else who is different.
They are also haters of all sorts of government, even when its programs directly make their lives better.
You know these people: they won't eat Indian Food, or African Food, or any kind of other food they aren't at all familiar with. They loath being adventurous. They are the cowards in this country who appreciate only sameness. If followed it will lead us nowhere.

Amen!
2
Pure discrimination. Is he begging to be impeached? The majority of this country will not stand for this blatant attack on our sons and our daughters, mothers and fathers, neighbors and friends.
7
Yet another move that shows beyond any shred of doubt, that Donald Trump has a severe chronic mental illness, and that is no joke. Normal human beings simply do not treat others with so much hate on a regular basis.
4
In my experience many human beings treat others badly. They don't very often become the president.
1
Just another way this administration is rolling back the rights of the people and attempting to impose the will of the right on the citizens. Soon he will tell women they can't work outside the home any more and have to "obey" their husbands...
4
Sounds like typical move from Trump's playbook. Rattle subordinate's cage (Mattis) while on vacation.
2
I dunno. I sort of see the military thing as sooner-or-later inevitable. Here's why: if they gain thirty transsexual recruits but lose three hundred good ol' boy recruits who don't feature a positive aspect of their military service having to share the barracks shower when plumbing might be an issue... then the generals will have to skew to the bigger numbers. Need those troops.
Not to mention the three hundred strong backwoods militia that might spring up in retaliation.
Much easier for a person to make a gender switch than it is to convince ten gorillas they're behind the times and need to get it into their not-as-developed craniums that this is the newer order, and that's an order. Plus there's that grim potential for a gradual uptick in the 'friendly fire' or 'range accident' stats. It's not like they teach gorillas how to do floral arranging in those boot camps.

The Evil Empire will not prevail. The law clearly protects the LGBT community. "Sex" in Title VII does not say "pregnancy" but the Supreme Court found that "pregnancy" is an attribute of gender. So is sexual orientation. We will get there despite the small minds and malicious deeds of Donald and Jeff.
5
your heart is in the right place, but how is orientation a function of gender, when both men and women can have a range of orientations - in fact, the same range of orientations? I don't think this is a strong argument because it doesn't make logical sense.
Pottree, riddle me this. How can you fire someone because of their sexual orientation without that involving consideration of sex?
Trump is simply feeding his base. A base that's built on hate and resentment. They don't care if Trump is doing nothing to improve their lives as long as everyone else is as miserable as they are.
10
Looks like Bannon had the day off and it was Pence's turn to tell Trump what to do.
8
Here is another piece of information regarding those "tremendous costs" that some liberals seem to buy into for some naive reason.
It cost the US government $84 million last year to pay for Viagra and other erectile dysfuction drugs for military members. According to the Rand Corporation, it would cost only $8 million or less to pay for all service members to have full medical care.
Its not tremendous costs people. The military spent $435 million on military bands last year. $8 million is nothing, its like 0.08% of the military budget last year. By the way, that it 8/100th of a Percent!
No, if you think transgender people should be barred from the military, you are a bigot. Its as simple as that. You are a bigot, regardless of whether you are a liberal or not, you are a bigot if you buy into Trumps argument even 1 bit.

There is a simple solution to all this is a total BOYCOTT all Trump Businesses by the Gay Lesbian, & Transgender communities.
Hit him where it counts in the pocket book.
Hit him where it counts in the pocket book.
5
It's a good idea, but it probably isn't a solution.
Trump is already monetising the presidency tremendously, so a boycott would just a cost of doing business. (Who knows, Trump might even profit from _increased_ business from his bigot base.)
And you'll recall that in the debates he happily said that his racial discrimination in housing was 'just business', and anyway, it was OK because lots of people were doing it, and anyway, it was OK because there was no admission of guilt.

Great- give us a couple more Supreme Court Justices and we'll overturn Obergefell next.

Having forgotten the life of economic poverty that we had been born into, each of my four siblings voted for Trump. At recent family gatherings, they would try to assure me and my husband not to worry, because "Trump doesn't care about gays".
I would always reply that Trump's lack of interest in the LGBT community was the very reason why we should be concerned, because we are expendable for merely political reasons.
My family was correct - Trump does not care about the gay community. Unfortunately, my husband and I were correct, too.

56
Looks like my reply wasn't printed yet, so I'll resubmit a summary. ---- Paul, I think your 4 siblings have not reached awareness that Trump doesn't care about them either. Not sure when that awareness will happen, but be ready! I wouldn't say they were ever "expendable merely for political reasons" because Trump is a junk trader. Clearly the Market needs to have more restrictions about letting junk be sold. I suspect the "yesteryear olden" Trumpers and Pencers will be replaced by new, intelligent products ready to enter the World Market.
1
O could have sworn he said he was an ally to this community of people during his campaign. I guess i am mistaken.
8
So, when Trump doesn't get his way he decides to take it out on people that he can punch down on. Not shocking but highly against the constitution. I look forward to watching the ACLU win these cases because love will win.
14
The LGBT community did not support Trump, so they are really not his constituents and should not be surprised at all he has nothing for them in return for no support from them
3
Why would a group historically discriminated against in every social and legal way support a bigot?
3
He's the President of the United States, that is, of everyone in the country, gays included. To suggest he is just the president of heterosexual white men is wrong.
4
Some in the LGBT community or those who believed they were allies did vote for him. Let us not forget the Log Cabin Republicans.
2
I hope the Republican party does not get a single LGBT vote in future elections.
13
They can punch all they want, but Trump et al are swimming upstream on this issue and will be swept down by the tide of history. It's not even good politics anymore. The days of legalized bigotry are over.
57
Perhaps Mr Perkins of the 'research council' can provide some data points to support the claim re: 'devastated military'. Let's see what alternative facts he's peddling to Pence and other closet-cases of the religious right.
10
I guess it shouldn't be surprising that right-wing "christians" have found their savior in a man who hates everyone who is not himself, since they hate everyone who is not like themselves. I just wish someone would point out to them--and not stop until these "christians" confess their betrayal--that their devotion to money, their rejection of charity, and their devolution into the meanest, most hateful wing of the Republican party is something other than Christianity. It is truly something sinister.
18
None of this can be a surprise. Everyone knew the measure of the man on 11/8.
Let's not forget that LGBT people, along with Jews and the disabled were among the first targets of the fascists in 30's Europe. Other targets; Communists, socialists, liberals, moderates, and finally, conservatives. (See von Papen)

President Trump's Tweet that transgenders are "not allowed in the military" has been publicly negated as meaningless by the head of the joint chiefs of staff, the highest ranking uniformed officer.
Having no effect on military law, it was a cruel statement to the thousands now serving that they may lose what has become their home. This is a population with Gender Dsyphoria, with a suicide rate ten times that of the general public.
Trump didn't nothing but make this fragile group feel despair, with the probability of self harm. Here's an article with link to a major study of suicide among this population

Irony indeed that Mr. Brownback has been chosen to be America's voice for international religious freedom. More like America's future policy of promoting White Christian Male privilege throughout the world. This is what Trump, Bannon, Sessions and Miller are working hard to pollute America and the world with. This is why this gang loves Russia so much.
When Trump went for Pence as VP everyone should have known the state of play going forward.
Trump lied for LGBT votes no surprise there. Bannon will continue abuse the rights of others to desperately hold on to the 'goodwill' of the "Base" and Trump will go along to keep the votes. He Does Not Care.

So are these concessions to Sessions or recompense for Pence?

Seeing "LGBTs for Trump"-type signs at Trump's Nuremberg rallies, before and after the election, continues to astound me. Who are these people who can bask in Trump's perverse celebrity appeal and ignore the rest of his alt-right disastrous agenda? Now the full range of the wrath of the right has been revealed in this one day of shame. What's next? The Republican Party has always relied on an undertone of anti-LGBT rhetoric to fuel their self-pity that they have been marginalized at the expense of minorities. LGBT issues are a valid component of American rights as much as any other group - racial, religious, gender or otherwise. The core Trump base feels marginalized, and is looking for any taste of revenge on a national level. Trump is just using LGBT issues as another one of his "bright, shiny objects" to distract from the total failure of the Trump administration means he sees us as an easy target who won't fight back. You picked on the wrong crowd, bubba.
13
Question to Americans: If an LGBT military person dies in defense of America, will you provide an honorable burial?

America has never rolled back civil rights for anyone for any reason, except for the Japanese during WWII and we are still apologizing for it. It's clear that religion and politics mix like peanut butter and glass. It's time we follow the founding father's rules on church and state or Trump will be just a beginning of our woe.
2
He said on the campaign trail that he would be a great friend to the LGBT community. Another broken promise. Sad.
27
Donald never learned how to be a friend to anyone.

Trump is the personification of the "other America," the part that never accepted the Civil Rights Movement, the part that belong to Evangelical churches who reject modernity, the part that still see "feminist" and "hippie" as insults. This is the America who thinks education is indoctrination, who haven't read a book since high school, who think that the their country is exceptional and all others are "wimps." This is the America who accuse "SJWs" and "Cultural Marxists" for ruining society even while they promote Sean Hannity. This is the America who has never seen a Muslim in person.
And despite all this, we "coastal elites" are the ones living in a "bubble." LGBTQIA rights are constitutional rights and anyone who says otherwise is not just living in a bubble, but an alternative universe. Trump must go.

America (and the rest of the world):
Please stop your cruel and abusive discrimination against gay and transgender people. This is a major human rights issue. Shame on all of us for sitting back and allowing it to happen. And a double pox on those who put their religious beliefs above common sense and human decency. And a triple pox on the Republicans in the Texas Senate. May you live to repent and be truly ashamed of your despicable actions!

Everybody must be made to live in fear in a land where even pursuit of happiness is a sick oxymoron.

Why is the NYT writing about Brownback as if he's an ordinary Catholic? He's part of Opus Dei, the rabid, gay-hating, women-oppressing cult founded by Franco's pet priest, Josemaria Escriva, now a canonized saint, maybe the only one ever to have purchased a title of nobility.
(Google "sam brownback opus dei" to learn more about Trump's roving ambassador of religion. Why should taxpayers have to fund that boondoggle?)

The Rand study estimates transgender service persons cost the military between $2.4 and $8.4 million per year.
Trump's use of Mar-A-Lago and other Trump properties cost $60 million a year.
It's obvious whose costing American taxpayers the most, and transgender service personnel are achieving their missions, unlike their vulgar, narcissistic Commander-in-Chief.

16
This sums up the "accomplishments" of the Trump administration: beating up on the weak (gays, immigrant families), and claiming credit for stuff other people have done.
8
We have been fighting this battle for a very long time. Trump's antics and those of his sycophants may slow progress down, but they cannot stop it no matter how hard they try. Ignorance and hate cannot prevail.
8
Barring transgenders from the military is not a civil rights issue. Being a soldier is a privilege not a right. The military should be focused on training soldiers to defeat the enemy. Anyone who cannot perform as a soldier as a result of a sex change operation which leaves a permanent open would should not be a soldier. Transgensers are suffering from mental illness and are therefore not mentally fit to serve. Finally every dollar and hour spent on sex changes and sensitivity training is time and money that could be used to train soldiers to defeat the enemy.
Too many Americans (mostly left wingers) have lost touch with the fact that it's a savage world out there and that we are so well protected by our military that we are not even concerned about basic survival let alone all the luxuries of American life. Let the military be the military not an experiment for social justice warriors.

By some estimates there are 15,000 transgendered active duty right now. They are already defending America quite capably.
Why are they suddenly unfit to serve when they have done so honorably already?

The ignorance in your statement is surpassed only by its bigotry.

The military has long been at the forefront of social justice. Does your attention span function longer than 140 characters?
Spiteful, vindictive, cruel, harmful, and un-American!

To the Religious Right: You cheered the Administration when it attacked women's reproductive health. You cheered the Administration when it attacked people's sexual choices. You cheered the Administration when it decided to take away at least 11 million American's health care. You cheered the Administration when it decided to destroy the environment.
What are you going to say to Jesus when you die?

It surprises me that anyone is surprised. Does anyone really expect any Trump in the public eye to be truthful much less loyal?
For starters Daddy Trump is a spaun of the Joe McCarthy clan whch was never credited with honesty or integrity. Would one have wanted to do business with him? His misogyny is a matter of public record. If he can reduce his sexual desires to quantifiable expressions of raw power how then can there be toleration much less acceptance of differences whch threaten his narrow definition of masculinity?
Junior is showing himself to be a chip off the old block who cannot possibly understand why Socrates asked what is truth.
Eldest daughter Trump is positioning herself and family for future financial gain. It is her entry into a level of wealth and social respectability which was previosly unimaginable.
They are pandering to constituencies which would otherwise despise them and their way of life but then power corrupts but absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yet another campaign promise trashed. How many by now? But, if Mr. Brownback accepts the job of religious ambassador (what is that?) maybe it will stop him wrecking Kansas' economy and finances.

First the travel ban aimed at Muslims, now this. Who will be next?
1
The homophobic, white supremacist, pseudo Xtian patriots will feel license to commit more gay bashing and hate crimes. Stay safe, gay community, synagogues, mosques....
6
A bit off topic, but I'm curious, NYT editors, why you went with the colloquial "friend of the court" brief throughout this article rather than explaining amicus brief once and then using that appropriate term throughout? Is this an attempt by NYT editors to walk way from the advanced educational level of its language? Please don't do that. Teach up. Don't write to the lowest common denominator or the middle of the room.

Whoa nelly! To "land a punch" is a figure of speeck very specifically denoting successful harm to the one landed upon.
Not only is that not the case here, but journalists really should be up to speed on this by now. When the White House says "This is the way it will be!!" - it means, pretty much - nothing at all. At best, that "this will be in court for years, and meanwhile, nothing will actually change." which is what the Joint Chiefs immediately pointed out to our soldiers.
A better headline? Easy - "Trump Tosses Three Spitballs At LGBT Rights"

Isn't Brownback the governor whose stupid economic policies blew up in his face in Kansas? Why would he be appointed to anything?

I am straight, married and all I can say is this is what was predicted to be DJT policy. One wonders how many folks in the closet or recently came who voted for DJT and now regret it? Beware, Kirk Douglas warned because of his experience as a teen in Germany during the 1930's. No one listened or heeded his pleas. Afterall, I guess the DJT folks believed he was old, addled and above all a 'liberal'. The DJT supporters believed that DJT was not an elitist, despite the fact he attended private schools and supposedly is a college graduate. Really, to all DJT folks out there, I have some advise. . . read a history book or at a minimum watch the History channel; purchase and utilize a dictionary and finally, get adobe reader, [its free], in case reading and understanding reality is not your strong suit. Plese folks, wake up, vote for democrats and clean the swamp/sewer of these souless, lying, obscene folks. America's future is not a B movie.
3
Trump is on his way to putting a knife in the back of everyone he conned into supporting him.
3
Just..wow.."I'm the best friend gay people ever had,"or whatever he said to that effect on the trail. I anticipate an EO granting full liberties only to white, middle aged Christian men. Did this flip flop come from Brownback? Sessions? Bannon? Gorsuch? Or it Trump's own pandering? The glory these good ol' boys are taking in their own sadism is unspeakable. Just waiting for armbands or felt stars.
2
Please remind me again how there is no difference between voting for a Republican or a Democrat for President.
10
And what does this say about America to the LGBT youth growing up in areas without city/state legal protections, like San Francisco? I can't imagine how frightening this could be to a kid struggling with sexuality and gender identity deep in red-state America who had thought LGBT rights were protected.
24
Oh, please, would that every political issue in this country could be determined by the norm of "a kid struggling with sexuality and gender identity in red-state America." Gays have a right to equal protection under the law, not the right to determine ambassadorial decisions. They are 2-4% of the population in this country but, backed by big money, act as though they come first in every decision.
2
While most of the civilized world seeks to reduce discrimination the United States wants to expand it. To be honest and transparent the constitution needs to be suspended until there is a genuine belief that all people are created equal.
5
It is the place of the legislature to write the laws. Congress has had ample opportunity to explicitly include sexual orientation in the anti-discrimination laws (as well they should have). Since they did not choose to do so, however, it is not the place of neither the courts nor the EOC to create rights which are not a part of the law.
The Senators and Representatives of the Congress are the persons to blame for this situation; the courts can only act on the laws they write and pass.

1
The mean-spiritedness of so-called "Christian Conservatives" is appalling and disheartening. No one's sexual orientation has ever been a threat to their values, religious freedom, or lifestyle, but yet, they want to press this idea that expanding the rights of LGBTQ people will have dire consequences for the world as we know it. Their fear and loathing of people simply because they're different and don't conform to their ideas of righteousness and salvation don't justify turning back the clock on our nation's progress.
6
These contentions used by the right wing are really the same ones used by them or their parents and grandparents when objecting to racial integration.
5
Even staunch Republicans who agree with Trump's anti-transgender policy should be relieved that the US military has set a precedent: orders must be properly authenticated or they will not be followed. Otherwise, imagine the disruption that could result from a troop deployment order sent from a hacked twitter account.
2
LBGT people are still the pinata of choice. When all else fails, they are the group that can still be reliably used to start the culture wars anew. They can be treated as people who, for some reason, don't deserve the same rights as other citizens and what's more, this discrimination against them is shared among many groups across the societal spectrum and they try to codify that discrimination into law.
6
And thus concludes Make America Straight Again week at the White House.
No member of the LGBTQ community should have believed for even a second that Donald Trump was a different kind of Republican. I know I didn't. After all, it's impossible to get into bed with the Evangelical Right and the LGBTQ community at the same time. They won't sell their votes for anything short of outright discrimination toward the LGBTQ community.
And as for Sessions, well, he doesn't believe in civil rights. If the President wants to fire Session, he should. The Administration will become so embroiled in the ensuing political firestorm that Trump's agenda will grind to a halt for at least six months. That's an outcome I can live with.
Sessions must go.

6
Finally he's shown his hand on the LGBTQ community. We're not part of America. We're not worthy of serving our country, of being protected by the same rights as everyone else, and he's appointing an intolerant backwards GOP member to be, ironically, an ambassador at large for international religious freedom. The only question is whose religious freedom will he be fighting for.
Remember the part of the pledge of allegiance which said "with liberty and justice for all"? Not if you're female, LGBTQ, African American, poor, handicapped, ill, or just plain not extremely rich. Because enough voters went for Donald Trump we now have a government of, by, and for rich white males. God help the rest of us.

Brownback?!? Well. Trump can claim to have filled a post at the State department (the existence of which was news to me) . . . and this moves this Governor to a position where he'll have no actual power, a good thing for Kansas.
The bizarre tweet about banning trans people from the military reveals a bit more about Trump. We suspected, and now know for sure, that he doesn't have discussions with advisors, and doesn't seek the advice of the experts - in this case from the Pentagon -who surround him. We know his hubris has no bounds.
It is also one more indication that when he feels threatened he'll go after the nearest vulnerable target to divert attention. And that he craves a constant hubbub over being asked to relate to important matters. And he'll do anything at all to get approval from his so called base.
What is worse for the LBGT community is that underlying his attacks is always the sense that he is signaling his minions that it is alright to hurt whatever group he scapegoats. That is frightening and yet who do we have in Justice but Sessions - a victim who is willing to victimize.

As I recall Sam Brownback, or nations newly designated "ambassador at large", has endorsed the work of a right wing "Christian" group working in Russia to imprison gay people. They strongly support the beating and violence against gay people which is no rampant in Russia. Not sure of the details of that, but perhaps someone more informed on that can elaborate here for the public.
13
That's interesting. Do recall where you read about Brownback's involvement with Russia?
1
Perhaps Jeff Sessions is trying to brown nose his way back into his "beloved" president's good graces. Stepping on gay and transgender rights would be an easy way to gain back trust from the man who has been beating up on him relentlessly for the past few weeks.
2
Sessions has a long track record of anti-LGBTQI work all on his own. It's probably part of why he was chosen; that and his voter suppression in Alabama to keep the blacks from voting. You'll remember he was not confirmed for a federal judge seat because he was too racist. It's the same mind set for both.
3
So a president who never served because of "bone spurs" decides who is worthy of being in the military.
A president who brags about groping women pushes an agenda removing protections granted by sex discrimination legislation.
A president, thrice-married and who carried on affairs while married, appoints a hostile bigot as ambassador for religious freedom.
Way to practice what you preach, Conservatives!

These things make your country exceptional.
1
Was Brownback's appointment designed to keep him from being run out of Kansas on a rail? I'm sure Kansans are better off with their incompetent governor now roaming the world trying to make it safe for Christianity. Wonder how that will go over in Beijing, Tokyo, New Delhi, or Baghdad.
23
I'm waiting for Brownback's first live report from Mecca.
1
Riyadh, he should start in Riyadh because Don is very popular there and I'm sure the Saudis want to learn about Christianity.
3
And yet Brownback was so romantic in that movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. I guess you never can tell.
All right all you right wing evangelical bible thumpers, what would Jesus do besides throw you out of the temple.
68
What we have in Washington DC is a group lead by a lair. So much for draining the swamp. Look like there are more people jumping in.
9
We are headed for the social dark ages. Suppression of voter rights, discrimination against sexual orientation, loss of abortion rights for women, destruction of a health care system, attempts to turn the Boy Scouts into Trump Youth, loss of environmental protection, policies that are religious rather science based, and a collection of half-wits to run the White House.
56
To be taken seriously. The Supreme court is unlikely to help, unless Roberts and Kennedy see the light.
2
Trump and the rest of his administration are definitely an equal opportunity group of haters. Real lives are destroyed by the actions of this administration. Be it undocumented kids, transgender kids, gay adults, those with health issues....the list is long. Where are all the real Christians who should be opposing all these mean-spirited acts? How will they justify their support of such legislation when they meet Jesus in their afterlife?
29
But Ivanka ...
15
No matter what the sub-verbal idiots on the right do, gay people have already won. The youth of America love the gays.
8
It's as if this administration wants to go back to the 50's.
4
1950's ...or 1650s?
2
You do mean the 1850s, I presume?
3
@ maria5553 -
Everything about the '50s EXCEPT the federal income tax rates.
Everything about the '50s EXCEPT the federal income tax rates.

Perhaps this was just an effort at distraction. Three such announcements in one day as the Senate voted on healthcare? I know trump has surrounded himself with some hard core Christian conservatives but trump himself is an unreligious amoral person only interested in enhancing himself. Where do these policy positions come from? A draft dodger attacks American soldiers; an incompetent and bigoted governor is named ambassador at large for religious freedom; and an out of control DOJ gratuitously intervenes in private litigation. We all deserve better and certainly our LGBTQ fellow citizens deserve better.

I have the perfect solution. Since Trump and his entourage is so enamored with Russia, it's leader, it's policies, it's "bans"etc.--why not just move there, instead of turning our beloved country into a Ban Everything That Makes Sense State. Time to Ban Trump? Maybe then he would understand what the freedom, tolerance and pride that we are entitled to have in our country means when you don't have it.
p.s. Ivanka, Melania? Are you truly ok with all of this?
p.s. Ivanka, Melania? Are you truly ok with all of this?
10
The only surprise to the LGBTQ community about Trump's bigoted actions is that it took him so long after gaining office to do it.
31
Is there anyone who believes Brownback, as ambassador for religious freedom, will be protecting the rights American Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and other non-Christians? Will we hear him speak out when Jewish cemeteries are defaced and Mosques are attacked? Yeah, I didn't think so.
44
All Trump knows how to do is punch, kick, fume, throw things, and shout obscenities to no one in particular. That's one classy guy there, the deal maker extraordinaire. Trump has never been a deal maker. His tactics have not changed one iota since he assumed the presidency of his Daddy's company. Trump was born on third base and thinks he's hit a triple. Now he is "nothing" but a public employee, a servant to the people who are now his boss. And, believe me, as Trump loves to say, he hates answering to anyone. Soon, however, he will be answering to Special Counsel Mueller. I can't wait.

Let us hope so. Not optimistic.
Grossly self-serving and cynical politics of hate.
9
Question to right wing Christians: We get that you don't want gay people to marry, and you don't want transgender people to serve in the armed forces. But Sessions' decision to pursue a policy which would allow LGBT peple to be fired simply for their orientation -- do you not want gay people to eat either?
128
Yes, that is exactly what they want. It must be made clear that these beings are NOT CHRISTIANS. They do not have a clue about Christ or his teachings. They would not know Christ if he slapped them.
34
They don't want gay people to exist. Either suppress who you are or die. Very compassionate people.
2
And while you are praying for the "unborn", would those prayers be withdrawn if you knew the "unborn" were gay? I've always believed its a lot easier to love something that has no thoughts, desires or aspirations.... like the "unborn", than to a love and support a living breathing human being. (It costs less too.... no need for healthcare, education, jobs, career. No messy conflicts of interests.)
2
