Sean Spicer Resigns as White House Press Secretary

Mark J (Cleveland ,Oh)
Trump's new communications director. Wait and seen the similarities surface. Trump models dictators
vadne (Coldstream, BC Canada)
So this "Mooch" is someone for whom Trump has great respect - need more be said on that topic?
UnicornVendetta (Seattle)
This man sold his soul to who knows what and I do not feel sorry for him one bit.
HenchmanTwenty1 (Rhode Island)
♫ Scaramucci, Scaramucci, will you do the Trump fandango? Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening we'll see ♫
marky_mark (Lafayette, CA)
He had better get a big book deal fast and bank the money. There aren't many jobs for full-time liars - Fox 'News' doesn't want him and the Trump team is fully stocked.
Charlie (Phoenix)
A couple of weeks of lies from Scaramucci and Huckabee and no one will remember Spicer.
Marlene Autio (Canada)
We all agree Sean was Trump's whipping boy. To lose one's integrity on a daily basis is abominable. Hopefully Sean can take a long vacation far far away. The Mooch is going to find out just how layered the lies are. Knowing Jared is still in charge is scary. Bannon is evil. The Koch Brothers are evil. Sessions is weird and power hungry. Sarah is just - I don't have the words for her. Her smile Friday said it all - I am sure she had a hand in Sean's resignation. Trump hates the media because for the most part, it is truthful and he hates any truth that does not agree with his truth. Melania must really question her agreeing to come to the house. Either that, or she has greater power than we credit her for. Manchurian Candidate perhaps? Trump wanting to learn about pardons speaks volumes of his guilt, far greater guilt than we all know already. Mueller is digging and Trump is running scared. I am surprised he hasn't had a heart attack. But then, Those multiple golf games. TRUMP GOLF COUNT: 39* Cost to Taxpayer: At least $47,712,684
Leslie Sole (BCS Mex)
Huckabee is a glory seeker, her ambition just tanked her loyalty. She bought a Target for her forehead....ego
Katherine Spring (Atlanta, GA)
It won't happen for a while but, at some point, as the investigatory net closes around him, Trump will resign. He will spin it as an action made necessary by the "fake media" and by the country's failure to acknowledge and support its greatest president ever. (Sad!) Truth is, he of the short attention span is bored. He has enjoyed the pomp and power of the presidency, but now he chafes under the restrictions that everyone tries to impose upon him. Truth be told (but why start that now?), Trump wants to play golf and return to the business world where his minions will daily assure him that he is the best thing since sliced bread.

President Pence will then pardon Trump and all his relatives.

Democrats will be relieved because they will no longer have a dangerous, mentally ill president. It will take them a while to realize the dangers of a Pence presidency.

Republicans will be relieved because a Trump resignation means they never have to admit that they were wrong in electing an unqualified and and corrupt megalomaniac. Further, they will then have the president that they wanted all along.

Unlike President Trump, President Pence will succeed in passing legislation. Think about that.

Bottom line: Even a Trump resignation, while devoutly to be wished, will not end America's travails.
Robert (San Diego)
He made his bargain.
When history recounts this Trump episode he will be remembered.
Sufibeans (Pasadena, Ca)
Is there any government business being conducted in the midst of all this turmoil?
Dan88 (Long Island, NY)
I can imagine that at some point the "information" conveyed by the WH press briefings becomes so thoroughly and obviously useless that some media outlets simply stop attending and rely exclusively on WH leaks for their WH reporting.
Edward Sevume (Stockholm)
I wonder what will happen when he looks up himself in the mirror and ask the questions - did I serve the people well and for a good purpose?, Am O a trustworthy person? Alas how naive of me! When you want all those spotlights trained on you, you have already signed on to the devil!
Bob (My President Tweets)
With each passing day President Obama's legacy shines a little brighter.
Safe upon the solid rock (Denver, CO)
An honorable man would have walked out on day one, and before telling America lies about the inauguration crowd. Spicer is not sorry that he lied, he's just upset because he has a bad boss.
Ginger Walters (Chesapeake, VA)
It's a good thing I suppose, but he sure as heck waited long enough. I don't trust anything or anyone that's been tainted by this administration. It just gets worse and worse. It seems that DT and his family are completely above the law. As the GOP loved to say, "lawyer up". That's been Trump's trump card his entire life. How ironic. What an appropriate name.
Mark J (Cleveland ,Oh)
Anthony Scaramucci. Trump's propaganda minister. Wait for the show to begin . You think we have seen lies. Just wait. Trumpsters will love him. Spicer was sad. But he had guts to,leave.
Ed Mahala (New York)
Sean Spicer meet Chris Christie. Used and abused and discarded.
RT (Boca Raton, FL)
Watching Scaramucci say he loved the president over and over was awkward. Really awkward.

It reminded me of the scene in the movie "Boogie Nights", where Philip Seymour Hoffman's character attempts to kiss Mark Wallenberg's character.

The difference was that Wallenbergs's character rebuffed the advance.
EB (RI)
What took him so long?
MAO (Oregon)
Yes, the Spicer thing is dramatic. Perhaps now Trump will get strategic, circle the wagons, and give the poor out of work Chris Christie a job at the White House as superintendent of bridges and arranging beach chairs on the lawn. Then he and Trump can eat doughnuts on top of the former vegetable garden created by Michelle Obama?
Dan88 (Long Island, NY)
"Resigning" after 6 months -- Spicer's got some explaining to do at his next job interview.
Lowell Greenberg (Portland, OR)
What an insignificant loss to the country.
Almighty Dollar (Michigan)
Trump hurled his nuclear insult, opining that Spicer was not "tough."

It's really laughable that Trump criticizes anyone for not being tough enough. trump was a punk and bully in grade school, so much so even his maniacally driven Father couldn't stand him. Despite military school he avoided Viet nam like a true neo-coward, getting several deferments.

He belted his son at college, knocking him to the floor. This is not a tough man. Just an obese blustering phony who rarely picks on anyone his own size, limiting his attacks to weaker, smaller people, who either need his money or need their job.

It is pathetic anyone supports him. His behavior is monstrous.
MG (Wayne,PA)
Face it she is a much better liar than Spicer.
CP (NJ)
I hope you're kidding, MG. why do I think you're not?
CJD (Hamilton, NJ)
"This was the shortest tenure of any White House press secretary in history--period!"
Zander1948 (upstateny)
As a person who was a PR/media relations person for almost 40 years, I don't know how Spicer lasted this long. In my entire career, I never lied for anyone. If any CEO or head of agency had asked me to lie, I would have walked off the job, and I needed my job. When I was hired for all my jobs, I made that clear: I will not lie for you. If you make a mistake, we admit to the mistake, we figure out how to make things right, and we never, ever, ever, make that same mistake again. If there's a crisis, you handle it. You don't blame it on someone else. The buck stops at your desk. That's why you have a crisis plan. You develop it, you stick with it. If you don't want to listen to your communications team, then you have to deal with the consequences. If you want to go off message and tweet so that you make your base happy, then deal with the consequences. Scaramucci has never had to do this job. I don't care how much "New York confidence" he has, nor do I care how much he's taken on the press in the past. If he doesn't have the backing of his boss, and his boss won't listen to him, he's toast. Spicer had to lie for Trump on so many occasions, it was sickening.

So you may call my colleagues and me "flacks," but the vast majority of us would never lie like Spicer has since January 20. Go write your book, Sean. That's about all you have left. You have no credibility as a press officer/media relations person. Not in my opinion, anyway.
nataan (nyc)
He quit after six months and a day.

DIDN'T THAT USED TO QUALIFY FOR "CAPITAL GAINS?"
ellen (nyc)
I have two close friends who worked with "mooch" at Goldman. They each, in separate conversations, called him a snake.

just what we need.
Tuna (Milky Way)
Just what Trump wanted.
ellen (nyc)
I'm afraid you're right. I'm retired wall street myself, but my "time" (we were all imprisoned by the golden handcuffs) was at Drexel Burnham, and then Bear Stearns. It seems the real pythons and cobras ended up at Goldman, to look at Trump's Trust ....
Catherine (Middletown, Maryland)
Yikes, but not a surprise!
paula (new york)
Trump here admits his staff is is sometimes directed to leak.
I bet its hard to keep it all straight in that den of thieves.
Vahe Katros (Palo Alto)
The Thousand Yarn Stare
A. Schack (Upstate NY)
I understand the wishful thinking on the part of those congratulating Sean Spicer for resigning but let's be clear, Sean Spicer didn't resign because he rediscovered his integrity, he resigned because Trump just brought in an outsider to do fill the role that Spicer thought was his.
Cicely berglund (Nova scotia)
Nothing became him in his job like the leaving of it..
Rudy Nyhoff (Newark, DE)
Out of the bushes and onto the pavement.
Muezzin (Arizona)
" Scaramucci ...called Mr. Priebus a “good friend.”

What a great omen, lying before he even starts the job.
CP (NJ)
It's what I'd expect - the spin continues.
Omerta15 (New Jersey)
America's Baghdad Bob hits the road. Good riddance to the chief spokesman for the most corrupt administration in our history.
Ann (Boston)
I can't decide if Mr. Scaramucci resembles a used car salesman pitching a lemon to an unsuspecting buyer or Jonathan Frid/Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows. He is allegedly deleting his earlier tweets so he fits right into an administration that hides the truth and misleads the public. Another shadowy character added to the mix. Sean Spicer made his bed....I have no respect for him.
theresa (<br/>)
Looks like a mob lawyer to me.
Carl Hultberg (New Hampshire)
What an honorable and patriotic guy. Quitting just before everyone gets indicted. A real American hero and role model for sure.
Kenell Touryan (Colorado)
Too bad for Spicer, he sold his soul to a narcissist 'fact spinner', fell in the trap laid out for him and was diminished. He has so tarnished his reputation, there is no telling where he will end up with this new career.
nataan (nyc)
With a "consultancy" and much more money.
RachelMarta (Somerville MA)
I am going to miss Melissa McCarthy on SNL.

Sean Spicer can do some good if he comes clean with what is really going on inside the White House. He has not redeemed himself. He should have quit the first time he was forced to lie for T.
Vito (Florida)
You have to love the NYT news writers dramatic writings: "resignation rattled an administration already reeling..." Oh please, Trump Administration is not "reeling". While you try to paint a dire picture, Pres Trump is quite decisive, moves forward and not reeling. Nice try to paint such a dire picture.
DTOM (CA)
You are correct Vito. The Apprentice's administration is dying.
William (Baltimore, MD)
Yes. They are doing well.

Most Presidents, after six months in office, are determining whether they can pardon all their family members, associates and thrmstkcess, dobtrsearch on how to discredit the independent counsel investigations of their money laundering and collusion with foreign enemies .... and work out methods to fire those investigating their criminal and treasonous behavior.

Yes, yes. The Pres is s doing jest great.
maria5553 (nyc)
Your capacity for denial is amazing.
J.Pyle (Lititz, PA)
Trump is think of rotating Sebastian Gorka into press briefings? This has to be either a joke or a new low for this administration. Trump's low credibility ratings will not be helped by Gorka who has no credibility at all. He is a self-promoting fraud with at best exaggerated and at worst fake credentials.
J L. S. (Alexandria Virginia)
I hadn't heard of the guy before that first press briefing!
Jean (Holland Ohio)
America is supposed to be the land of second chances. I hope Spicer finds his way to a second chance at living a noble life.
Hornbeam (Boston, MA)
Trump thinks life is a t.v. show. After his pocket, he cares most about t.v. ratings. He's trying to assemble a crew of people who owe their position only to him, not to any qualifications they have, and that also fit his idea of what looks good on t.v. because this, he thinks, will help improve his ratings. Spicer didn't look the part sufficiently from Trump's point of view.
Unfortunately for Trump, the biggest dud in his t.v. show, a person without one redeeming quality, is Trump.
Howard64 (New Jersey)
smart move spicy. unlikely he would have pardoned you. more rats will be following your lead.
BMEL47 (Düsseldorf)
Take it from Ray, "Hit the road, Sean and don't you come back no mo'!"
Billv (RI)
Right. Who better to be the public face of Trump's "populist" agenda than a New York hedge fund manager whose nickname is "The Mooch"? Honestly, folks, you can't make this stuff up.
Ken (St. Louis)
Scaramucci will ultimately fall even harder than Spicer.
treabeton (new hartford, ny)
Just what the White House does not need: One more inexperienced person who is more than willing to sing the praises of the president. "The Mooch" will be a star given his "love" for the president and the president's agenda. In his debut yesterday, Scaramucci demonstrated outstanding sycophantic skills which certainly pleased his new boss who cannot live without constant flattery. Scaramucci reportedly had the support of the two most inexperienced advisers in the WH: Jared and Ivanka. The Trump Train careens on heading for an inevitable crash.
Jocelyn H (San Francisco)
Does our president that does not read or research know that Anthony Scaramucci's Tweets on-line that state:
Believes in Climate Change
Has many multiple tweets on-line in strong support of Gay Marriage
Against death penalty
Believes strongly that Russia is a clear and present threat
Favors gun control
"AG Jeff Sessions is a stand-up guy. He's always said he would recuse himself from any case in which his impartiality could be questioned."
Kevin (California)
You had me believing he might be OK, until that last part. Sessions is most certainly not a stand-up guy.
Michael S (Wappingers Falls, NY)
I see nothing in this article that suggests the White House was rattled by Sean Spicer's resignation. The day before Spicer's resignation he was the butt of jokes and now he is a martyr. Seems when a press secretary becomes the story it is time for him to go.

It may just be the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci wa intended to throw Spicer off the cliff. I any event the whole thing is just tittle tattle and of no importance.
Robert Stewart (Chantilly, VA)
Spicer obviously knew that working at the White House did not require one to be crazy, but it helped. Am sure Spicer will now regain some measure of sanity.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, CA)
I dispute the NYT headline writer's word choice that the White House is "on edge" over Spicer's resignation and associated matters. The Trump White House has been over the edge for roughly six months.
soitgoes (new jersey)
This whole Spicer episode would be comical if it didn't reflect the fact that we have a remarkably unstable president who is running our country like some cheap TV reality show. This is more fact than hyperbole with each passing day.

Seriously, how much longer can this go on? Is ANYBODY in Congress concerned where this is all heading? Why does anyone with a brain and a conscience support this self-declared emperor and his impulsive actions? Spicer was the least of our worries.
Kevin (California)
The members of congress care about 2 things- Reelection and making good on their promises to their lobbyists.
Jim LoMonaco (CT)
Republicans care about two things: Power and making sure the rich get far richer.

Jobs for ordinary people? Sure, at Walmart wages. Healthcare? Only if you can pay. Education? Only enough to be a successful cubicle critter. Infrastructure? Get used to the taste of the Flint River people.

Their motto? "I've got mine and now I want whatever you might have left of yours."
MsPea (Seattle)
So, right out of the gate, Scaramucci lies at his first press conference. Stating that Trump is "loved" by "the people" and that the polls show how much he is loved. I don't know what polls "Mooch" is looking at, but the major ones I've seen, even the ones traditionally biased toward Trump, like Fox News, show his support hovering right around the 40% mark. Maybe the White House considers that "love," but it's questionable who else would. So, we're in for the same old same old from the White House Communications Department. Lies, and more lies. It will be like Spicy never left.
D. Whit. (Atlanta, , Georgia)
He was one of the funniest political figures recently, considering he had absolutely no sense of humour.
He should do fairly well on "Dancing With The Stars. "
next...
RC (Burtonsville, MD)
Here's hoping Spicer's resignation is the first of many. No self-respecting human should want to work for this dangerous president. A stint at this White House would be a blot on any resume. As for Trump, his end approaches fast. The proverbial iceberg (in the form of the Mueller investigation) is not too far ahead. Look closely and you can see its faint outline through the fog. The fool will get his comeuppance.
Anonymous (Portland)
Have you read James Wolcott in Vanity Fair on Sean Spicer? I think that article is why he resigned. He must be mortified.
Maggie (Calif)
If only trump was next to resign, before he ends up in jail
Kevin (California)
I want him to stay in office, completely neutered, until the next election. "President Pence" makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Adirondax (Expat Ontario)
It's going to get worse before it gets better. Much worse.

Trump will resign in the next 12 months after an unending stream of drip, drip, drip bad press. He will unravel in real time. The irony for him is that his television ratings will never be higher. None of us will be able to tear ourselves away.

The low point will be the Pence presidency, as he acts out his Victorian sexual repressions and attempts to force the country to go along.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, CA)
Order No. 1 for President Trump's rejiggered communications squad: Get out the message that this administration of lies, incompetence, bitter factions and zero accomplishment is a well-tuned machine making giant strides for the nation.
Kevin (California)
That's been the message from Day 1. It still hasn't gained much ground with the intelligent, educated people in this country. The red state goobers? They are eating it up. nom nom nom.
Courtenay (Seattle)
Even rats have gag reflexes. Having a Wall Street sharpie as your boss as the communications director should be unpalatable to anyone regardless of one's ethics or respect for truth. This move doesn't show a abundance of integrity as much as depths he will not support. While one might except a lose interpretation of the tax codes, plundering a retirees hard earned retirement account is another thing entirely.
Ben (New York)
Enough Spicer. Focus on obstruction of justice, emoluments clause violations and conflict of interest. Ken Starts memo is clear. Paraphrasing the late great Johnny Cochran,"if the evidence is right, we must indict."
Peggy (Ypsilanti)
I never thought I would say this, but I felt so sorry for him after Trump snubbed him so badly when in Rome. A devout Catholic who should have met the Pope left to go sight-seeing. I am sorry for what has happened to him, but at least he is one person who has stood up to Trump! I wish more of the GOP would remove the steel rods from their clothes and see if they can stand up to him.
DR (New England)
Devout my big toe. A devout Catholic wouldn't work for Trump and he certainly wouldn't lie repeatedly.
Ben (New York)
Sorry for him is ridiculous. He's a hatchet man right wing guy
Jean (Holland Ohio)
It was amazingly cruel of Trump to have prevented Spicer from meeting the Pope. Least Trump could have done as a morale boost when Spicer was so long on front lines at attacks.
melech18 (Cedar Rapids)
What difference does it make who stands at the podium spinning for President Trump? What might make a difference is the new communications director's business practices including the reports that he is being paid a premium price by a Chinese company to buy his company. Why does Trump gravitate towards guys doing business with the Russians and the Chinese? Bet we would know if we ever saw those hidden tax returns.
Phil Zaleon (Greensboro,NC)
The mere fact that Mr. Spicer views Mr. Scaramucci's appointment reason to resign, considering the degradation that the Press Secretary has already abided, worries me greatly. What does he know about Mr. Scaramucci that we don't? The only other plausible explanation is that Sean had has his fill of being a spokesperson for the Trump administration, and this is a way out!
maria5553 (nyc)
He had the decency to look ashamed at all the lies he was telling us. Not enough decency to not feed us lies. I guess unlike the Trumps he has a smidgen of decency.
Tim (The Upper Peninsula)
Last one off the ship's a rotten egg!
Mark Dunn (Santa Fe, New Mexico)
Appointing a "mini-me" as communications director isn't going to solve Trump's problems. It has been ineffectual, sycophantic yes-men who have allowed Trump to get to where he is right now -- a national laughing stock. If it truly is Mooch's plan continue to "let Trump be Trump" in all his asymmetrical, unpredictable, unhinged glory, it will only speed up the demise of this crippled presidency.
Ken Calvey (Huntington Beach, Ca.)
He was the iconic representative of the Trump administration. Gargantuan incompetence.
NI (Westchester, NY)
I guess, you can only lie, distort and contort the real chaotic, dangerous and vicious reality within this Administration. Everyone in the team is Judas, waiting the opportunity to strike each other in the back. The Emperor is getting more and more insane and courtiers and jesters are just feeding his unsatiated narcissistic vanity and stupidity. I am surprised Sean Spicer lasted 6 months. I guess Sean Spicer's news conferences were unbelievable because he himself could not believe his own words. Caught hiding in the shrubs during a news conference - what more evidence is needed about his extreme discomfiture with his job! Bravo Sean Spicer that you opted to maintain your sanity. And by resigning you had the last laugh.
Chris (ATL)
Sean Spicer was nothing more than an errond boy of the Trump regime. Sure it was a tough job defending lies spewing out of Donald Trump and his uncontrollable tweeting. I don't know whether Spicer believed in what he had said past 7 months, but it is hard to conceive that Spicer was just doing his job defending Trump lies. He was a bad WH press secretary and I certaintly have no respect for Spice as a fellow human. On thing I miss is Spicer on SNL.
luluchill (Winston-Salem, NC)
The messaging remains the same, so does it really matter who stands at the podium and delivers it? The real problem with this House of Borgia is the absence of any genuine domestic or foreign policy agenda, unless of course you consider thievery, deception and bombast to be policy objectives. Sadly millions of us continue to suffer from stagnant wages, poor health care, a declining education system and horrible infrastructure. Time for the carnival to pack up its tent and head to Russia.
john gruen (new york city)
The line is already forming at Barnes and Noble for the tell-all book "Spicier Moments"
northlander (michigan)
And now, presenting , Baghdad Bob.
David Forster (Pound Ridge, NY)
Everyone, including Sean Spicer, who agreed to work for Trump sold their soul. They will carry that stain with them forever. Spicer's probably a nice guy, but I have no sympathy or respect for him or any other defenders of Trump whose presidency will go down in infamy.
Ellis6 (<br/>)
Spicer deserves no credit for resigning. It's not like it's in protest over the president's dishonesty. In a White House dominated by incompetence and incompetents, having one more won't matter.

Spicer took the position and began lying his first day on the job. He set a record (unofficial) for dishonesty among press secretaries, though Sanders is a serious threat to take over that title.

Spicer gave an interview before he started and said he wouldn't lie -- his credibility was the most important thing. He proceeded to lie and lie and lie.
He should be ashamed of himself. Goodbye and good riddance.
J (NYC)
"...after an “Access Hollywood” tape of Mr. Trump’s comments about women became public."

...after an “Access Hollywood” tape of Mr. Trump’s comments about MOLESTING women became public.

Fixed it for you.
Pilot (Denton, Texas)
No one cares about a press secretary. This is overblown garbage and the media is simply being pulled around like a miniature poodle by Trump.
Carissa V. (Scottsdale, Arizona)
Every single American should care about a press secretary. The "overblown garbage" is coming from trash-talking, power-tripping White House spokesmen and women who—when they're not lying—are whining nonstop about the news media's constant focus on the Russia investigation.

What the media have been doing is called NEWS COVERAGE. It's performed by real journalists, not "fake news" morons who set up a website, give it an official-sounding name, and start spouting nonsense to the masses.
Jes Stuartz (Illinois)
He said he had great respect for Mr. Spicer, adding, “I hope he goes on to make a tremendous amount of money.”

That's the only thing these people care about.
Mercy Wright (Atlanta)
I was offended by that too.
norina1047 (Brooklyn, NY)
I have great concerns about Anthony Scaramucci's appointment as White House Press Secretary. He is a smooth talker who, I believe was hired to boost and add to the 40% base. Scaramucci will not take the abuse. He seems as arrogant as Trump, but much more polished and will put him and everyone else in their place with diplomacy and a snide smile.
I always believed that Sean Spicer was itching to tell the people what he was really thinking about Mr. Trump and his policies. Perhaps that's why he always seemed so frustrated. He just didn't know how to go about telling Trump off or not defending his strategies as he could have. Good luck, Sean. I prefer you in that position. We knew the devil we had.
Chris (nowhere I can tell you)
Is it just me or did Scaramucci look like the Joker from Bateman?
Bob (My President Tweets)
Yeah, that was your problem comrade trumpsky, the press secretary.
Marc Castle (New York City)
Good riddance of Sean Spicer. He took a paycheck for 6 months from the atrocious, disgustingly mendacious, Trump administration. That it has gotten so bad that this rat bails, doesn't make Spicer a hero. He's lucky he walks away before the real implosion begins. What's coming is not going to be pretty. We, as a country, are in for some very dark days.
Duncan Lennox (Canada)
This reminds me of Trump`s favourite story about "The (poisonous) Snake" in which after he bites the person who helped him says "that is what I do".
Mash (London UK)
Daniel Sheehan told me that story about that snake. He was speaking about people like trump and similar currently prevailing circumstances.
This was two years ago.
AirMarshalofBloviana (OvertheFruitedPlain)
I wonder what Mr. Spicer will be thinking about his decision in the near future. Seems like his contribution at assisting our president in Making America Great Again had personal limits. I have always been told that the first sign of a good commander is that they demonstrate the ability to take orders. "Well, kids, I did work for the President of the United States and then I quit."
Dan88 (Long Island, NY)
What in the world are you trying to say Air Marshall? For one, a "good commander" doesn't "take orders," he or she "gives orders."
Bob (My President Tweets)
I bet everyone in trump's cult is wondering whether or not Spicer's NDA is ironclad.
Susan (Denver)
His NDA or his DNR?...
dAVID (oREGON)
By using the word "love" with respect to 45, this clown identifies himself as nothing more than a propaganda machine for "dear leader". Any appeal to emotion is nothing more than an attempt to manipulate.

I reject this admin. even more now.
susan mccall (old lyme ct.)
now this is a real quality duo..scaramucci and sanders…still draining the swamp
Bob (San Francisco)
Trump isn't really interested in informing the public. His one and only interest is stroking his ego, Gorka is exactly the right man for that. It's incredible how well that man can twist reality into shapes that are unrecognizable to ordinary humans. The few times I've been able to watch him without getting dizzy, the things he says are completely contrary to the known facts of the universe.
Christi (W)
Awww...

Isn't it cute when someone who knows how to work the New York business press believes he can handle D.C. political press circuit?

I think Sean was just waiting for some kind of an excuse to quit judging by the way he was smiling yesterday. I am going to miss Spicey. ;0-(
Chandra Varanasi (Santa Clara, CA)
Does any of this matter to the general public?
Ed Wetschler (Lords Valley, PA)
It certainly should, but you're right, Chandra: To much of the public it will not.
Ninbus (New York City)
My favorite line from "Tony" Scaramucci yesterday had to be:

"The President has really great karma, OK?"

No words...

NOT my president
Mark Schlemmer (Portland, OR)
"The president has really great karma."

"Karma NEVER forgets an address."

Oops. I wouldn't stand too close to Trump.
Mercy Wright (Atlanta)
He probably meant charisma. Another Trump ignoramus.
Chico (New Hampshire)
When has anyone ever heard of a President who is obviously very paranoid and seemingly guilty, of lot more than stupidity, talk about pardons for his family, friends, and himself, after only 6 months into his term......Nixon never even spoke publically about it.

This Gas Bag that is supposed to be a President, who has this weird and bizarre habit of referring to himself in the third person all of the time during speeches and interviews, is a strange dude to be polite and probably a little unstable in the head or to put it in pro wrestling terms, a few bricks shy of a full load.

People want to know if their President is a crook and guilty of something, I think he answers that question every time he tweets...about Russia, Fake News, Pardons, Smearing Comey or Mueller, etc. etc. etc.

Russia-gate is not going away and what, President Gas Bag, should know is he can't pardon himself out of an impeachment.
Elise (Chicago)
Once trump using putins military and kills all the congress and governors and families in a back ditch and pays local losers to inform on our towns people. Then that sacred 40% can send their kids to war for russia or die. Because the non voter for trump will also be in that back ditch. Thanks coward gop. I hope it was worth a few dollars off your taxes
Quiet silence (Texas)
When you elect a clown, you get the circus
david x (new haven ct)
"...it was not part of a pivot or grand redesign."
No, of course it wasn't. There is no grand design, so how could there be a grand redesign? It's just a bunch of back-biting incompetents toadying up to the would-be tyrant.

Regarding Sean Spicer, I kept trying to warn him that this is exactly what would happen.

Trump's bizarre comment that Spicer's television rating are great so his future is bright...how to respond to what this madman blurts out next?
MsPea (Seattle)
What is it about Trump that inspires the loyalty and willingness to humiliate oneself the way Spicer, Huckabee-Sanders, Conway and the others do? I listen to Trump's rambling interviews, like the recent one with the NYT, and he is barely articulate. He jumps from topic to topic, starting sentences, interrupting himself to completely switch subjects, speaking in phrases, making no sense at all. I can see the loyalty to the president, if that president has coherent policies that one can agree with and support. But, Trump cannot explain any of his policies, if that is what they are. His ignorance is legendary, yet Spicer and the others get behind him and lie for him. Why? How does Trump do it? Otherwise intelligent people debasing themselves to lie for him. It's completely baffling.

Spicer soiled his otherwise excellent record as a naval officer and Republican leader by working for Trump. He'll probably get a very good advance for a book, but otherwise there's nowhere for him to go, but Fox News, the last outpost of modern-day snake oil salesmen and scoundrels.
Ruth (FL)
It's done in the same manner as the previous administration i.e. Jay, totally inept, incoherent and more deception i.e. Clinton, Rice, et al. How soon we forget.
Dan88 (Long Island, NY)
That comparison is a false equivalency Ruth, and you know it. Obama had a vision where he wanted to go, and that lead to loyalty to the president and the agenda. What I interpret MsPea as saying is that Trump has no vision for where he wants to take the country, so why would anyone put up with the kind of disparagement and personal compromise they are subjecting themselves to?
Wordy (Way Out West)
The Trump boat is sinking.
Spicer will be glad he jumped now.
JMT (Minneapolis MN)
Sean Spicer should apply for a new job with SNL. He can play himself and read his lines from a teleprompter. The new comedy sketch will be called "Corrections" and he will get a lot of laughs while quoting the "old press secretary Sean Spicer," making a face, and then reading a truthful "correction."

As future news of indictments develop the Spicer's "Corrections" segment will cover who has copped a plea, who has turned State's evidence, who is indicted, who is on bail, who is on trial, who is convicted, who is in prison, who is pardoned, who is in Siberia, who is "spending more time with his family," and who is impeached. Because of Sean's close relationships with all of these very important people, Sean will probably be able to convince them to appear live on the show in exchange for not telling everything he knows.

More fun than a barrel of monkeys! Just think of the ratings!
Claire (Los Angeles)
At the expense of a great nation that needs gracious, educated leadership, our President is making a mockery of the highest office by giving us all a seat at his corrupt, petulant table. His brand of leadership equates to a yet-to-be-filled administration, daily resignations, impulsive appointments and absolutely no sign of action that is even remotely close to doing the job of leader of the free world. Dining at the Eiffel Tower and basking in the perks of power don't count. I'm talking about improving education, protecting the environment, forging alliances, fostering innovation, promoting peace, saving lives, leading by example, making the world a better place.

Remember during the campaign when all those people asked: Is he qualified to be President?

Would anyone else like a tally of what exactly he and his administration have accomplished in the last six months? I sure would.
eduKate (Ridge, NY)
One could say that anyone accepting the job of white house press secretary knows what he's getting into and gets what he deserves. In fairness to Spicer, the fix he got into was unprecedented: articulating communications from a White House that was changing those very communications while he was uttering them. Sean Spicer's image won't be carved on Mt. Rushmore, but he has been enshrined in Melissa McCarthy's incomparable portrayal of him as "Spicey." I hope he comes to enjoy the humor in that and realizes that it wasn't mean-spirited. Best wishes to you, Mr. Spicer.
Les Watling (Honolulu)
“I certainly see the American people probably see the president the way I do,” he added, contradicting a raft of recent polls showing Mr. Trump’s approval rating below 40 percent nationally.

So the new director of communications starts of with a statement denying the facts.... we won't call it a lie, but its very close. So, nothing will change, however, the facts will be glossed over in a smoother style.
GT (NYC)
I'm not sure about his outrage --- My belief: he was looking for any good excuse to get out before being fired. He had an impossible job to do.

For all those commenting -- Trump still has his base. I'm not seeing the Dems make any positive moves .. and if they think outrage is going to get their side to the polls .. I'm not agreeing.

The best thing they could do for Trump is nominate someone from California -- he will keep all the states he won last time and the EC will put him back in the WH.
mj (santa fe)
Like every single member of the Trump administration, Spicer lost all credibility long ago. His personal and professional integrity vanished on day one of the job and he let it swirl down the drain until now. No one of any ethical balance--or even simple self-respect--would have taken the job in the first place let alone continue lying, and lying poorly at that, to the face of the American people for half a year.

Unfortunately, we don't need rid of Sean Spicer. We need rid of Donald Trump and his wildly unfit, unqualified and, as it happens, criminal advisors.

Now we have added another unqualified rich guy to the team. Scaramucci fits in perfectly--as wildly unfit and entirely inappropriate. A hedge fund manager...who will be communications director? Unfortunately, when republicans get a taste of Scaramucci's character, they'll do like they always do. Look the other way.
Gerry (St. Petersburg Florida)
At least we know this much for sure.

Anybody out there who still believes in Trump is a complete fool, and their judgement must be totally, absolutely dismissed.

Anybody out there who acts like they still believe in Trump is willing to sell their soul and cannot be trusted under any circumstances.
Susan (Denver)
Sean, oh Sean. You are one among many associated with Trump who will undoubtedly become poster children for higher education ethics classes, and meanwhile serve as a reminder that the abdication of personal integrity and the lack of adherence to basic values of honesty and other steady pillars of ethics are not without consequence.

As you depart the formal structure of this corrupt administration, may you be reminded that personal ethics are not compromised in an instant; instead, they are compromised gradually-- sometimes almost imperceptibly-- in the smallest actions and decisions we make daily... until one day we find ourselves a mouthpiece for something or someone who uses that vulnerability in us to their advantage, and promises us personal gain in exchange.
You succumbed to this trap.
You are not the only one--far fr. Still, you are responsible for the damage you have done, and will have to account for it and deal with the consequence.

I hope you can recover your principles and some sense of dignity after the damage you have advanced in your previous role.
John Eddy (Fort Collins, CO)
I won't join those congratulating Mr. Spicer for finally showing some integrity or hewing to his alleged 'core values'. For six months he was at best a paid spinner and at worst a salaried liar. Just the fact that he went to work for someone with Trump's total lack of character tells me he has no values at his core.
ZcodeSportSystem.com (PA)
This white house has been so chaotic..just wow.
Pavel (Home)
Trump seems to have settled on a Minister of Propaganda. I'm glad he loves the emerging Il Duce. For
much of the rest of us this administration is looking more and more like the early stages of an emerging dictatorship with the President searching new and creative ways to skirt the law. Any American looking at what is evolving should be terrified with an Administration that frequently sees clear black and calls it white. I am praying that Republicans recognize just how high a price we're all going to pay if this man's craving for power goes unchecked. The consequences will be an awful high price to pay for a very tenuous agenda.
tony b (sarasota)
Who knew Sean had integrity?
Tara (New York)
I am surprised that Spicer lasted this long. It appears that Trump never trusted him. The constant criticism and belittling of Spicer by Trump was a sure indication that your boss doesn't like you. Remember, Trump didn't think enough of Spicer, a devote Catholic, to include him for the visit to the Vatican. This was Trump at his mean-spirited best.

Expect a short honeymoon between Priebus and Scaramucci. Wait...
post-meridian (San Francisco, CA)
From Wikipedia:

"Scaramuccia (literally "little skirmisher"), also known as Scaramouche or Scaramouch, is a stock clown character of the Italian commedia dell'arte. The role combined characteristics of the zanni (servant) and the Capitano (masked henchman).

Clown servant and henchman. Well, at least we know he'll fit right in.

What do you know, Spicey decided he wasn't gonna drink White House Kool-Aid any more. Wonder if he parleys it into a book deal. He should; there's no reason to show any allegiance to Trump. Plus, there's that whole going out there on the heels of the inauguration and insisting it was the largest turnout ever. Period. That took total surrender of self-respect to step into the Trump funhouse of mirrors like that. A big fat book deal won't buy it back, but at least he could say he got something for being such a prostitute to this abomination of an administration.
joanne (Pennsylvania)
"Mooch" looks like someone who might have stepped off the Access Hollywood Van the very day candidate Donald Trump made his famous remarks about cozying up to random women because he was a star, and allowed to do it.

Isn't it the responsibility of the WH press secretary, who is employed by taxpayers, to inform the American public as to significant events and to do so with the cooperation of the media...to report to the people who pay his salary—-us!

If DJT wants a personal spindoctor who"loves" him and who considers his mission to promote POTUS as a "winner" then Trump needs to hire his own PR guy and that person should not stand at the podium in the press room. But then, I guess Sean Hannity already has that job...
Skip Nichols (Walla Walla)
Spicer was a casualty of his own greed for the power of the White House. Trump (NMP) is at war with most Americans and is submissive of Russia -- which means only one thing: Money. Spicer only existed to help empower the Trump gang.
CD-Ra (Chicago, IL)
Maybe now Spicer will be able to speak freely. He should be called up in the investigation
Jim Carroll (Springfield, MA)
Spicy finally grows a conscience of sorts. Or is it ego? Who really knows with this bunch of sociopaths.
Leslie sole (<a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>)
In the 6 months Sean Spicer tried to represent Pres.Trump to the WH Press Room attendees he was terrible. He was deceptive, falsely arrogant, intellectually far inferior and could not not flat out please the lying delusional POTUS. He was horribly uninformed on the last round of false statements, the newest unbelievable contradictions and lies and mostly he proved he wasn't even a tool.
Mooch is an Olympic Class Tool.

Sean Spicer didn't see the scribbling on the walls of The White House when Sarah Huckabee Sanders took over his podium? And, then, he is not "allowed" to meet The Pope!

I can imagine this latest White House Press Release announcing Sean Spicer's resignation is not factual... Sarah probably wrote it and Sean ok'd his final White House Press Release. Of course, the final draft of this press release had already been tweaked and approved.
Trina (Indiana)
Mr. Spicer chose to become Donald Trump's, "Minister of Disinformation."
Save me the revisionist tortured soul bit. Mr. Spicer sold his soul to the devil; he just underestimated how soon the devil would be back for his pound of flesh.
Keith Ferlin (Canada)
Sean Spicer was the most loyal, longest suffering, least appreciated press secretary, PERIOD.

Are Trump and Putin the Innamorati in this piece of artwork? They seem perfect for each other. Who knew Pantalone would find comfort in Il Dottore? Or that art history class would add panache to my punchinello!

I prefer a French farce.
JWL (Vail, Co)
Spicer may be the only person in this administration not to have had covert meetings with the Russians. By all means, he had to go! In the meantime, our exalted leader is trying to figure out how to pardon himself, his children, his minions. Isn't Trump the guy who said, if you need a pardon, you must be guilty of something?

Good for you Sean, Bravo Hombre you made me proud, you resigned with honor ...because this Trump Team is batting way below a .250 batting average and they would have thrown you under the bus sooner or later.......Great, a new Communications Director in a secretive,non-transparent administration is sort of like a Minister of Cultural Enlightenment ...............and will still have three and a half years to go.........

It's tragic to sell your soul to the devil and not have the devil appreciate it.

No. It's stupid to expect the devil to appreciate it.

Also, the devil has a bad enough rap already. Don't compare him to Trump.

This is a hard-learned lesson for anyone who aligns himself with a gangster- you're lapdog loyalty means nothing. Trump doesn't care if this country's sick and poor die, why should he care about a pawn like Spicer? It's all playing out like a "B" movie, where everyone falls before the villain meets his gruesome end. Won't happen soon enough.
Abby (Tucson)
Trump creeps ever closer to the comics who try to lampoon his performances.

"I can pardon anyone, including moi. Please please me in the Concession Room. Better praise my performance, or I'm not gonna pardon you."
Stephen Scott (Hollywood, Florida)
Scaramuuci’s absurd and incredulous endoresments about Trump’s ability to throw a football thru a tire and sink 3 foot putts was astounding He sounded like a 3rd rate used car salesman. This truly is the 4 year theatre of the absurd.
BobbNT (Philadelphia, PA)
Did I really hear the new Trump Communications Director and Harvard Law grad and financier say that he was previously "unexperienced" in politics or some such related activity in a radio replay of his remarks yesterday.

There is no such word as "unexperienced" Mr Scaramucci. The word is "inexperienced". And he is the new Trump White House "Communications Director! Oh! please!
arcadia65 (nj)
When will the book be released?
Josh (Atlanta)
Sean Spicer is alleged to be a devout Catholic. Trump denied him the honor of meeting the Pope probably as a slight even when he included his Jewish son-in-law in his entourage. To me that was probably a turning point. Sean realized that he was selling his soul to stay in the good graces of vindictive jerk.
liz barron (Sarasota, FL)
Why Sean Spicer stayed on after being excluded from the Vatican visit amazes me! How can someone tolerate such insults? I'm glad that he finally showed some spine!
nataan (nyc)
Crawling away beaten does not show spine.
it show humiliation.
Richard Wells (Seattle)
I don't understand the chorus of congratulations about Spicer's new found dignity, and/or integrity. He's been collaborating in the most dishonest administration in history, lying to the American people on a daily basis, licking his boss's shoes for 6 months, and now, his knees creaking he rises to his feet and walks out the back door... Oh, yeah, that took a lot of guts. Huckabee's going to be a lot of fun, too.
BobbNT (Philadelphia, PA)
I predict we will see Spicer with Melissa McCarthy on SNL! Can't wait!
Paul Wortman (East Setauket, NY)
What a loss! Not Spicer, but for Melissa McCarthy!! Her SNL portrayal was the only sane respite from the psycho-drama that is the White House. Perhaps Anthony Scaramucci will live up to his Punch & Judy namesake as the new puppet who occasionally has his head knocked about by the Tweeter-in-Chief. Let's hope Ms. McCarthy is up to this new challenge.
ted (portland)
Scaramucci, Skybridge Capital, that should fit right in, Skybridge being a fund of funds and all, isn't that where you feed peoples money into your account, take a cut and then put them in someone else's financial vehicle that will continue the fleecing, great fit with Kushner, Trump and The Queen who is going to "empower" American women as she manufacturers her schmatas in China. These people stink. Spicer was blunt and rough around the edges but at least he had a shred of decency about him, not something you would accuse the rest of these very wealthy, stage managed people of.
Turgut Dincer (Chicago)
I have a gut feeling that Sean Spicer resigned because thought the was going to be fired soon by the Boss. He supported every possible lie during his tenure. Good riddance!
Bob Warnock (Los Angeles, CA)
At this point it's Spicer, Schmicer, Scaramucci Schmaramucci, whatever. Am I the only one who doesn't care anymore?

Spicer should be on the first new snl show this fall playing Malissa McCarthy . We'll miss both for different reasons
joanne (Pennsylvania)
No big changes yet. We still have Saturday morning cartoons right out of the White House or perhaps on the golf course: the president had his typical laughably embarrassing tweet-storm this morning, with his usual obsessing (whining) on Clinton, Comey, fake news, emails, Podesta, Obama, Democrats, repeal/replace, and "complete power to pardon."
Tacitus (Maryland)
The more things change, the more they remain the same
BobMeinetz (Los Angeles)
Too late, Scott. Your ex-boss now claims to have the authority to pardon himself, effectively putting himself above the law. AKA, declaring himself dictator.

You shined his shoes all the way down - now own it.

"The end came in operatic fashion, befitting Mr. Scaramucci’s namesake — a stock character in Italian musical theater. As Mr. Scaramucci made his big entrance, Mr. Spicer exited quietly, disheartened that the president never quite appreciated his performance."
Ha! Not opera...commedia dell'arte. Trump as El Magnifico and Spicer as Punchinello. Enter Scaramouche!

What's the over/under,in elapsed days , from 9/1/2017 until the WH press corps begins a "Bring Back Spicer" drive? They will be thwarted again !

No other administration would even have Sebastian Gorka as a spokesperson. That he is one of Trump's favorites should be shocking, but, of course, isn't.
Frank Perkins (Portland, Maine)
“I think there’s been, at times, a disconnect between the way we see the president and how much we love the president and the way some of you perhaps see the president,” Mr. Scaramucci said

“I certainly see the American people probably see the president the way I do,”

Mr. Scaramucci — known in Trump’s circle as “The Mooch”

I guess we can write the new Propaganda Minister off at the starting gate. It is both astounding and scary how far out of touch from reality the "Trump Team" is required to be. Poor America.
Susan (Denver)
The title of "propagandai minister" takes on new meaning and seems appropo as we consider the administration's attempts to discredit free press and limit access of the public through reduced press briefings, and to attempt to create an alternate reality (which contains little reality and deference to non-subjective facts and events) through tweets and other means. My mother is 91 and lived through German propagandist Germany from 1926 until well into the 1950's. Without the availability of Twitter and other am at that time, Hitler first sought to discredit free press, then crimaniled it, and eventually, through financial sanctions, eliminated free press altogether and energized the propaganda machine.
As a survivor of the horror of this era, I encourage anyone who values their freedom to be wary of Trump and anyone associated with or tempted to peddle his lies for personal gain or because they fear Trump's twisted retribution.

Wordy (West)
Another one bites the dust.
Spicer was too good for for the Donald, tried to play Trumps game, so fell down the rabbit hole into deceit and notoriety.
EC17 (Chicago)
Sean Spicer was paid to lie and he sold his soul to the devil. But I agree with commenters, in the way he handled Trump's lies gave a peek that Spicer did have some integrity because he was horrible at covering up the lies. Every minute he was in the job I sensed he was under extreme stress because he knew he was telling gross lies and working for a mobster.

It seems Trump has taken his gloves off, is basically admitting he is a mobster, has colluded with Russia and is taking the stand, "I am President with absolute power and you are not". I just hope that within the GOP senate and congress there are legislators who have class, care about America and have integrity. I believe there are, that is my only hope at this point.

Sean Spicer has lost all his credibility aligning himself with Trump and lying for him has been disgusting. So they have hired two more clones. Subterfuge and lies are just that no matter whose mouth they are coming out of.
don o (st. paul, mn)
Sean Spicer is 45 years old and was working for the 45th and most corrupt President in our country's history . Perhaps in the past few days he realized he's 45 working for corrupt 45, the coincidence bothered him and half his life is over. He, like Alec Guiness in "Bridge on the River Kwai" realizing he's just helped the enemy, asked himself, " "what have I done?" And then the train comes over the bridge, the bridge is blown by Alec falling on the plunger, train falls into the river and during the ensuing fighting Alec G. is killed. Sean didn't want the same fate, but it would still be good if he pushed the plunger on 45. Maybe some Republican House and Senate members (who value their health care and positions) need to ask themselves this question as well. That is assuming Sean just did this and has a conscience regarding our country.
Diogenes (Florida)
Sarah Huckabee as press secretary? Another instance of loyalty over competence. Evidently, she has shown herself thick-skinned enough to survive Trump's daily barrage of insults, lies and hypocrisy. It would be laughable, if not so alarming. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I almost think I'll miss Spicer.
Mark Schlemmer (Portland, OR)
Sean will get his "Participation Trophy" in the mail in a few weeks. He may have to sell it on eBay to contribute to his own legal defense fund.
Skeptical Cynic (NL Canada)
Perhaps inevitable, but as this president's press secretary, Sean Spicer had unfortunately devolved into little more than the "Baghdad Bob" of the Trump regime.

Salvaging the tattered remnants of his dignity by resigning was the right and proper course of action for this tormented individual to take.
Montreal Moe (West Park Quebec)
For those of us enthralled by the scenario of the seeming collapse of societal norms in the USA the Sean Spicer is another event telling us to stop watching. Sliding from pathos to bathos is all the clue I need to remind me that the USA is not my country.

Ouch--" enthralled" ! I hope you mean that in sense of it is spellbinding, a spectacle.
Pajaritomt (New Mexico)
A lot of thanks Spicer gets for his hard work trying to sell Trump's lies. I agree he wasn't very good at it, but I can't imagine who could have done the job better. He deserves better.
Susan (Denver)
You think someone should receive accolades for selling lies for personal gain? What?
Majortrout (Montreal)
Sarah Huckabee Sanders will do just fine, thank you.
She knows how to tell trump's lies with a straight face - ba-da-bing!

Ain't Sarah Huckabee Sanders a dandy Evangelical preacher's kid?! Talk about someone who k own she is selling her soul!
Rosebud (West Bridgewater)
Thank you, Melissa McCarthy and good luck in future endeavors.

We'll see how long Scaramucci lasts if he starts to outshine 45.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Sounds like people are sentimental about Sean Spicer- but let's also remember that he did a lot of harm as well as take a lot of abuse- mainly for willingly lying for Trump to the American people.

Look at the graphic and see who he took questions from- he personally was Trump's conduit for elevating marginal or fringe press like The Washington Examiner or Breitbart and using his very job to endanger the American people's right to accurate information from our WH. Sanders spread the Fake meme too. Not OK.

Real harm is being done, has been done. And it isn't to Sean Spicer's feelings.
Ruben (Germany)
Mr. Spicer is setting quite an example by resigning. It might benefit the country if Mr. Trump followed his lead.
Amy (Sudbury ma)
"Mr. Kushner has grown increasingly critical of both Mr. Spicer and Mr. Priebus, whom he regards as party establishment figures who operate out of self-interest." How rich! EVERYTHING in the Trump administration is about self-interest, nothing about public interest, and Trump himself is the worst offender.
Andy (NYC)
Two things amaze me. One, that anyone would want to join this chaotic admin. It feels like a bomb set to go off. And Scaramucci has been trying to get into politics a while. Just what we need -- another overblown ego and fame chaser.

And two, that Jared is still being listened to. Isn't he the genius that started the storm by advocating firing Comey?
Jethro Tull (Frenchtown MT)
If Mr. Trump is the worlds best saleman (which I believe he is....believe me....) than Mr. Scaramucci is number 2. The best salesman can sell you something that you are not interested in or, don't want. Now is the time for the US population to run screaming from the room holding on to their wallets.
Karen L. (Illinois)
Scarymucci looks and talks like another slick New York snake oil (hedge fund) salesman. I hope all these people, most accomplished in their fields, go off to career ruination when they step off the Trump train. No one deserves to be rewarded for what they are helping to do to the country.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Maybe after Communications Director and chihuahua Mr. Scaramucci is also sent packing, Trump will skip mere humans and install a replica of The Orb to receive his messages from outer space or wherever he is receiving his information. And of course a fog machine to dispense it.
Elly (NC)
What else is new? Someone who had nasty words with Trump does a complete turnaround. Now he will replace Session in his affections and as not news savvy as he should be, is given top job. No affection for Spicey, man who sells soul for paycheck. But did right thing getting out of circus. Soooo assured daughter and son-in-law , in cahoots up to and over their heads, want this guy. Act2 to come , more farce.

Winifred Williams (Tucson, Arizona)
The White House (i.e., Trump) is not rattled at all, only those who have any sense or any integrity.
PS (Massachusetts)
A bit off topic but not completely. I admit to taking a certain pleasure in watching the Trump whirlpool take everyone down with it. The idea that the presidency can and should be run like a business is getting proven to be a completely flawed plan, and the destruction grows daily. Publicly run agencies and institutions are for and by the public; people like Trump and his newest wealthy ploy/toy Scaramucci wouldn’t know the public if they stepped on them while leaving their limousines. Spicer saw us, hence his pained expressions.

So, the off topic part, to all those who want to privatize schools, take heed. Do you really want to bring the same crowd of unscrupulous greedy into decision making power over your children? It’s exactly the same crowd.
Stop and Think (Buffalo, NY)
Why should I, or anyone else, care if the White House staff organization implodes? Each of them should be ashamed of themselves for not vetting their potential new boss better during the interview process. It was a simple chore: Just call any current or prior Trump Organization executive. They would each tell the same story - Pay is/was great, but the boss is/was an impossible, unpredictable, unethical jerk.
Courtney (Dallas, TX)
Does anyone else see the screaming absurdity in the statement that Scaramucci's appointment was backed by his daughter and son-in-law? I'll ask again: Since when are these people qualified to occupy the White House and make these decisions on behalf of our country?? Can we end this episode of The Twilight Zone already and have a do-over of the entire administration?

Is it really that big a deal? People come and go. While I didn't like Spicer and dislike Huckabee Sanders and Trump to a great degree, what's wrong with a new person (who is also ill-suited for the position but that's a whole 'nother story)?
Byron (Denver)
Every day with every pronouncement, the trump administration destroys another norm or long-established sense of propriety that our government or nation has.

And the republican Congress says and does nothing to counter that destruction. In fact, they seem to applaud it.

The inmates are in control of the asylum. I strongly fear that our democracy will not survive this assault. And the NYT and mainstream press continue to enable this by covering this coup d'etat as if it were another budget battle in Congress.

Is there still time for us to take to the streets with pitchforks and torches ?
LZM (New York)
The depth of Trumps disdain for Spicer was clear through one of Trump's hallmark acts of gratuitous pettiness when he barred Spicer from meeting the Pope during the group visit. A nice way to punish a devout Roman Catholic...Spicer wasn't "tough enough" in Trumps words, so, I guess, Trump felt Spicer deserved to be punished/humiliated/disappointed at the Vatican.... Trump humiliated Spicer more than SNL ever did.
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, Ca)
From what I've seen of Scaramucci on TV, schmooze would seem like a more apt nickname. A good spokesperson really needs to know how to slap someone on their back when they spit in their eye. Long suffering is not an asset in that job.
sideman (Durango CO)
Spicer is no loss as he was one of the most loyal to supporting Trump's twists, turns and lies.

Scaramucci is clearly a major loss to transparency and openness. He is yet another "elite" joining the very administration that promised it's supporters it would represent the people and shun the supposed elitists of Obama's administration and of Hillary's potential administration.

Trump's ostrich supporters have their heads firmly buried in the sand. It's no wonder they can't see what's happening around them.
rati mody (chicago)
Sean Spicer's resignationi is not surprising. He set him up again Scaramucci. as he did in the Reality show he bossed over! Considering all the inner circle shifts trump continues to make, trump recreates "The Apprentice." All he knows is that reality show-a make believe serial-- in which he set people against each other, with himself as the "Star" ( what he calls himself!) as he declared" You're fired." His governing abilites are nill. He fails as an intellectual who can speak intelligently without repeating his few adjectives-- "wonderful' terrible etc.
We are stuck with a man whose ego consistently needs to be assuaged. He hasn't a clue on how to lead America nor does he know how to govern. He is the epitomy of "The Ugly American.
Diane (Arlington Heights)
I was no Spicer fan, but it was despicable of Trump not to include him when he met the pope. Clearly wanted to remind him he was just the help.
Jean (Holland Ohio)
The irony of such dastardly treatment while in the "Holy Father's" city.

I don't know why Melania, raised Catholic, didn't stand up for Spicer. She should have used her influence to pressure Trump.
Rover (New York)
Let us hope their rivalry, dysfunction, and incompetence only continues. The fate of the republic depends upon their failure.
Edward Sevume (Stockholm)
I can see Mr Spicers's cognitive dissonance. For how do you explain to the voters who elected you that you want to clean up the Swamp in Washington but yet still give a job to a Wall Street Shark? This is why it is difficult to trust politicians especially of the type that will lie in order to get power.
Rear does one agree with Mr Spicer, but he is right on this one.
Blue Ridge (Blue Ridge Mountains)
Listening to Mr. Scaramucci's news conference yesterday made me feel a little sick. I lost count of how many times he said, "I love the president." The effusive adulation seemed unprecedented and completely lacking in decorum. It told me everything I needed to know about how forthright this communications director is going to be with the American people.

Mr. Spicer, I wish you well, but why did it take you so long?
Pranav Ghai (NYC)
How is it possible that a "long-anticipated resignation rattled an administration ...".
They knew it was coming ... and they are still unsettled by it? When Sessions is fired / resigns will they fall over in those deck chairs??
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
In his book, "Conversations With Kennedy", Ben Bradlee, the quintessential newsman (Newsweek, Washington Post), writes in the first chapter of the importance of the press 'liking' the candidate. Bradlee writes, "The press appreciated Kennedy for his openness and protected him, while the press reacted skeptically to other candidates".

"The men around Nixon cordially disliked the press...the men around Kennedy genuinely liked the press..." After that statement, Bradlee writes of the chaos surrounding trips with Kennedy (not knowing what time the plane would leave, no copies of agenda and statements) and the order of trips with Nixon (agenda stated departure time, plane left on time, copies of statements available, etc.). But the press wanted to be on the Kennedy plane: fun, like a frat party, etc.

The press is much more open about its likes and dislikes now, and there's an adversarial relationship between the majority of members of the press and any conservative candidate.

This is not good for our country, not good for democracy. Accusations are presented as truth, later shown to be untrue. Liberal are often given a pass while conservatives are examined under a microscope for the same or very similar actions.

There is a lack of trust in much of the news media, with people turning to internet sites. we expect news reporters and editors to be truthful, not blatantly partisan. Please, members of the press: do your job, earn our trust....earn it back.
Gerithegreek (Kentucky)
Sean was in over his head. You've got to be rotten to the core to stick with the Trumpster. Having seen his introduction to the country yesterday, I'd say the Mooch has the right stuff to be in the Trumpster's corner.
Dan88 (Long Island, NY)
"Mr. Spicer’s departure ends an excruciating saga even for a highly factionalized White House riven with intrigue. He had hoped to last a year as press secretary. He quit after six months and a day."

The "year" point is interesting: Everybody knows that this is the minimum amount of time you try to stay in a job you absolutely can't stand, because leaving sooner will look bad on your resume.
proffexpert (Los Angeles)
From George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language: "The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink."
Wordy (Way Out West)
Excellent quote.
Thanks for including cuttlefish!
chucke2 (PA)
Maybe we could have a lottery as to the date Sessions quits.
Jean (Holland Ohio)
Although I hate much of what Sessions is doing, I think it is good for Justice Department employees that he is willing to be a prime target of much of the Presidential fury.
Also, he is basically shoving in Trump's face that all people--zero exceptions-- in the Justice Department have loyalty and serve one thing: the Constitution and the laws of the land.
Upwising (Empire of Debt and Illusions)
Nearly lost in this morning's furious and bizarre Tweetstorm was Mr Trump's announcement of the formation of a new enterprise: TRUMP BUS LINES (TBL). Unlike more traditional coach lines that carry passengers from one point to another, TBL coaches will be strategically parked at all Trump Properties and at the White House. [A couple of coaches will be on standby duty in the White House Motor Pool, ready to be loaded on C5A transports at a moment's notice for the President's foreign jaunts.]

Spicey is just one more of an increasing number of Trump appointees who will be "re-accommodated" under the TBL coaches when they displease The Don.

[Unlike that testy little NORK with the funny haircut who use anti-tank weapons to "re-accommodate" those who cause his displeasure, we are a Western Democracy so we resort to "civilized" Bus Re-accomodation.]
Mark Schlemmer (Portland, OR)
I thought you were going to say these buses would be conveniently placed for Trump to throw people under. It looks like we will be entering the "Oh, that was
just a speed bump" phase of the Trumpistan history.
J T (New Jersey)
I thought you were going to say Trump Bus Lines would be put to work continually transporting a fresh group from among the lunatic 37% who proudly support him at this point from their far-flung locales to and from the ego-sustaining rallies he insists on staging here and around the world, in places like, say, Poland, so there would be yet another way his corporate cash flow and his ego could benefit from his presidency rather than letting local businesses profit.

And in keeping with his "all-of-the-above" energy policy, we could have one-fifth of the fleet powered by gasoline or diesel, one-fifth by liquefied natural gas, one-fifth by coal-generated electricity, and one-fifth by renewable-generated electricity. Or they could split it up by sixths if he wants to start up whaling again. "Harpoon, baby, harpoon," anyone?
Kathryn Thomas (Springfield, Va.)
Sean Spicer has stated that he has no regrets and took a potshot at the press on the way out of the White House revolving door. Well, I'd have some respect for him if he acknowledged many regrets, which would be honest, instead of the predictable phony response. He is and will remain a G.O.P./Trump apologist.
Andrew Henczak (Houston)
The role of White House Press Secretary is two fold: Damage control and Spin. Damage control in that the position requires the ability to mitigate the flubs of the president, which occur daily. The other is to communicate (spin) what the administration wants the people believe. Sean Spicer gave it his best shot, but he is too ethical and fair-minded to have survived in an administration that lacks ethics and credibility.
Alyce Miller (Washington, DC)
Spicer has no one to blame but himself for selling out and humiliating both himself and the American public for the last six months. He perpetuated Trump's lies, and treated the American people and the media with disdain. He is hardly to be congratulated for anything he's done, including resigning. He didn't resign because he suddenly had a revelation that he was being unethical, he resigned because he foolishly played with fire and got burned. Spicer is just one of the many greedy weaklings Trump has surrounded himself with. I want to ask him, was it worth it all?
Jean (Holland Ohio)
My favorite image of Spicer tenure is when he went and hid in the bushes to try to avoid t.v. cameras on one of the many bad White House news days. ...Almost a Biblical image of sinners hiding out of shame in what should have been Eden.

The following passage in the story is a glimpse at how Machiavellian it is in the Trump White House:

Mr. Priebus and Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s chief strategist, both strongly opposed the appointment of Mr. Scaramucci — in large part because he enjoys an easy banter and direct line to Mr. Trump, potentially threatening their positions, four people briefed on the discussions said."
Bumpercar (New Haven, CT)
The fact is that the president has psychological problems that make him unfit for his office. Anyone who works with him gets chewed up by the maw of his ego.

Does anyone believe that Sean Spicer thought it was a good idea to lie about the inaugural crowd his first day on the job? Of course not. He was a new employee trying to demonstrate his loyalty to his boss.

None of this should be a surprise. There was ample warning before the election that he was unfit. The American people, at least many millions of them, thought that Trump's antics were fine.

Think about that: he said one thing after another that was outrageously untrue or racist or sexist or mean or wrong or just dumb...and people voted for him anyway.

Then self-aggrandizers went to work for him.

Now both the American people and his employees see the folly of their actions. They have enabled someone mentally incompetent to be the most powerful person on the planet.

Whose fault is that? Their own.
PB (Northern Utah)
Total chaos in the White House, Congress, and Trump Administration. Nothing getting done (which I see as a good thing with the GOP in charge). A president who spends his time tweeting, going to his "properties," playing golf, obsessively attacking his critics and investigators, and threatening to fire people.

Poor Sean Spicer is berated and humiliated for not 'splain' Trump's actions properly and failing to make Trump look good.

So much for Trump's self-proclaimed business experience and management style being just what America needs in a president.

I wonder if those Trump supporters have figured this out yet
Nelly (Half Moon Bay)
These people are repulsively shallow, insincere, and petty. Moreover, they simply do not belong in politics as leaders of a Democratic nation dependent upon the broader civic awareness of its citizens.

This Scaramucci wishing Spicer "well" by hoping he makes a lot of a money? And the Greater Trump himself; sending off a brutalized Spicer by reassuring him he'll be fine because of his "great ratings?"

These comments from this pair of Snakes in the Grass is a perfect illustration of just how very shallow these pip-squeaks are. I guess plain old "money" in its abundance and proliferation is all they care about...

And Trump, not giving a care about WHY ratings may be high, or how they are attained, regardless the shambles they produce, is just about as insubstantial a human---not mention President---as I can imagine.

No doubt other or perhaps most contemporary politicians feel this way, but this Administration actually has the temerity, bad taste, and classlessness to wear this on their sleeve as if they were bragging.

Rural folk, with values shaped from more down to earth aspects of life, would have never voted for or supported these values even a generation in the past. What has happened to us?

I shouldn't, but I can't help but feeling a bit poorly for Sean the former mouthpiece of this thin charade. But I do. His appointed task was to tell porkie after porkie until he made a joke of himself and our Nation.
Alan R Brock (Richmond VA)
Mr. Spicer forfeited the possibility of any pretense of self-respect his first day on the job when he went before the world and declared that Donald Trump had the largest inauguration day crowds in history. From that point forward, he was a laughing-stock; actually, the perfect embodiment of the term.
Occupy Government (Oakland)
Here we go again. The media focus on the entertainment value of good ol' Sean Spicer is misguided.

It was precisely that commercial entertainment value of Donald Trump that got him billions of dollars of free media coverage during the campaign and handed the nation over to an autocrat.

Report that Spicer lied right in the face of America and we all knew it.
DK (CA)
Sean Spicer's resignation is the first sign of any moral backbone I've observed in him during this year. Perhaps there is yet hope.
Scaramucci's appointment is yet another demonstration that having a degree from Harvard or other well-known universities is no guarantee that that education brought with it either high ethical standards or a sense of civic duty. Both of those virtues are absent in the White House today.
Eve Galewitz (Orange, CT)
And farewell Sean Spicer, the most viscerally uncomfortable figure behind a podium since Richard Nixon. But, as clearly unsuited as Mr. Spicer was in this position, no individual, outside the what is becoming clearly the Trump family enterprise moved to DC, will be able to do any better. Trump will undermine the spokesperson as well as every cabinet officer and everyone else in the executive branch, for in his mind they are now mere employees of the Trump organization and answer to him not the American people. This administration has no concept of the public servant, unless it means maid service.
Jerri (California)
I am under the impression that Trump has been a fanatic on having employees sign non-disclosure agreements - not sure if that would apply for Spicer, nor do I know how enforceable that may be. Could Spicer be sued should he attempt to have a 'tell-all' book published?
Alex Tarbet (Melbourne, Australia)
During the campaign, anyone who asked this American if Trump could actually win got a resounding "No!" Australians seemed relieved by that answer. Now they're asking me what happened. All I can come up with is a tear in the space/time continuum. I know that's not enough of an excuse but it's all I've got.
NHGirl (Road To Nowhere)
I do believe that Trump's plan is to continue with the revolving door of characters. That way, the American public has no idea who is currently a member of the administration, providing smoke and mirrors for the deception going on there.

Indeed, all the world IS a stage!
Mike (Santa Clara, CA)
Mr. Scaramucci during the presidential campaign was an adamant opponent of President Trump's. What changed? I reckon that he saw how much money people were making in the newly "monetized" Trump administration and decided to come on board. "Bucks are the bottom line" for guys like Mr. Scaramucci and President Trump. They are birds of a feather.
Tom (Portland)
A successful democracy requires an informed electorate. Providing the electorate with an adequate level of decision-making information in turn requires a free press.

Sustaining a free press requires the relatively unfettered flow of the decision-making information from those in government to that press.

In a world where there are conflicts of interest, spin is inevitable. However the underlying facts must be made available to the press so that, ultimately, members of the electorate are in a position to make up their own minds and act accordingly.

Provisions to support and defend the above process are enshrined in the US Constitution.

A major contradiction of the Trump administration, expressed in the modus of White House press briefings, is the attempt to cut off that relatively unimpeded flow of factual information from elected government officials to the electorate.

What we confront is less Make America Great and more Make America Ignorant and Stupid. The fractiousness of White House press briefings under Spicer illustrated the unwillingness of reporters to become integrated into the Trump administration propaganda mill. Reporters that deigned to ask pointed questions were routinely met with hostility and stonewalling. This assault on the foundations of our democracy originates with the president and his top circle of advisors.

Scaramucci's and Sanders' Friday afternoon performance clearly established that in terms of the fundamentals - nothing has changed.
True Observer (USA)
A successful democracy requires an informed electorate.

Yes, that's why politicians run 15 second commercials.
FMR (New York , NY)
An ignorant, unhealthy, disoriented, economically excluded electorate are the makings of an autocracy-plutocracy-kleptocracy. We are well on our way. All we need is a Trump-instigated war, and there you are.
Charles (Clifton, NJ)
Great writing by Thrush and Haberman. From this quote, we see clearly the structure of the White House. it's not Republican, it's Trumpian. The Republican Party has been taken over by Trump and his surly mob in the heartland:

"During the transition, Mr. Priebus and Mr. Spicer stocked the press shop with their associates from the Republican National Committee, rankling Trump campaign loyalists who reminded the president that Mr. Priebus had suggested he drop out of the race after an “Access Hollywood” tape of Mr. Trump’s comments about women became public."
Hal Corley (Summit, NJ)
Analyses of Spicer's descent ignore the single biggest contribution to his fall: He is in charge of communications, yet cannot express ideas clearly or encapsulate complex subject matter in cogent précis. Fundamentally, he is uncomfortable with language itself. We live in a culture in which adult men are no longer required to possess the very skills required to perform job specific tasks. Sean Spicer was hired for loyalty, perseverance, profile and gender, not virtuosity or prowess. He floundered and failed because he was proven incompetent. "Period."
shep (jacksonville)
He was "uncomfortable" in front of the camera because he was asked to lie to the American public on a daily basis. As a person with a least some degree of scruples, that was something he did not like to do and it showed. It is clear that his replacement will have no such difficulty continuing the lies. After all, he tried to claim how much his boss is "loved" by the public, and we all know that claim is a bold faced lie. His boss has the lowest approval rating at this point in his presidency in the history. "The Mooch" (what an appropriate name) is just one more yes man to tell Trump how wonderful he is and what a great job he is doing, despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary. At least Spicer had enough self-respect to refuse to continue to be part of the charade that is this presidency.
Kosher Dill (In a pickle)
Yes. Spicer is not a competent communicator of event the most basic information let alone of overarching ideology. He's semi-coherent, resorts to ad hominem attacks and snarks at the slightest challenge, is thin-skinned and childish.

I do not understand those praising him for "integrity." He was canned. A man of lowest-common-denominator integrity would never have taken the job in the first place.
Chgo1945 (Condor1945)
I rather respected the job Dpicer did. Especially in light of a hostile press core that felt betrayed when their prepared narrative was not provided facts to justify their hostility. It has been an interesting 7 months where I awakened every morning with a grin.
Move' (Pennsylvania)
I cannot get past this, "The eventual appointment of Mr. Scaramucci was backed by the president’s daughter Ivanka, Mr. Kushner and the commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross, officials said."
H Mansfield (Florida)
Since Mr. Anthony Scaramucci is emphasizing the rule of Karma, perhaps he should think twice about becoming a crew member in this magnificent example of America's long overdue Karmic debt, now in full payment mode.
Michael Nunn (Traverse City, MI)
With the exit of Sean Spicer, the cast of SNL must be licking their chops in anticipation of Trump's next sacrificial lamb. This administration offers countless opportunities for hitherto unknown comedians to advance their careers.
Paul (Greensboro, NC)
An excellent pointed summary of what has happened since January 20, 2017 --
Trump's incompetency extends far beyond the ACA, but it began with that constant bitter GOP statement "repeal and replace" --- if you promise what you do not deliver, you lose complete trust in your word.

"No, Mr. Trump, Obamacare isn’t failing; you are." -- Paul Krugman
Carol (Baltimore)
This article is full of laugh out loud gems: Mr. Kushner has grown increasingly critical of both Mr. Spicer and Mr. Priebus, whom he regards as party establishment figures who operate out of self-interest.

In recent weeks, Mr. Trump had told people that Mr. Spicer was no longer “tough,” one of the harshest insults he can level.

It all would be funny if it weren't taking place in the White House.
rick (Lake County IL)
the current press briefings are the dissemination of lies, subterfuge, false equivalence comparisons, and more lies.
Sean Spicer's job description was explicitly to pogo-stick-spin everything.
And he did it in shorter time frames than the mind-draining commentary repeatedly given by Kellyanne Conway. You know that she'll never quit, never!

Sometime soon I hope that the WH Press Corps walks out of a press briefing, within a minute of when the cameras start rolling.
McM (PA)
'The Mooch' describes this guy exactly--willing to do anything to curry favor from the boss--and undercut and back-stab anyone or anything that gets in his way to attain that goal.
The multiple declarations of 'love' towards the "president" and his agenda reminded me a teenage girl gushing her everlasting devotion to the latest boy band so much so, that I actually thought he was going to swoon and collapse on the stage.
Carol (NYC)
I get the feeling that Mr. PRiebus is the next to go...
Lyn (St Geo, Ut)
Sean didn't stand a chance in this WH, just as Sean didn't stand a chance, neither does truth.
Mary Penry (Pennsylvania)
"and how much we love the President" (Scaramucci). This is not the language we want to hear. O Great Leader, we love and obey!
Observer (Chicago)
It seemed telling about Scaramucci when in wishing Spicer "well", his last comment was ".. and I hope he makes a lot of money...". I just thought that was strange- anyone else think that was odd?
Judith C. MCGOVERN (West haven, act.)
I didn't think it was strange. I thought it was sad, scary and oh how indicative of the sickness within our society where money is everything. One would have hoped he would have wished Mr. Spicer a happy and fulfilling life. A life of "giving back" and caring for others. Instead the new communications director wished him greed. Sad.
Rick Gray (Austin, TX)
I also found that strange. Normally someone would wish the person leaving good luck on new ventures, or simply happiness. It's so pathetic that these shallow, money-obsessed people in Trump's circle consider making lots of money the only important thing.
KathyinCT (Fairfield County CT)
$$$ is the ONLY value in Trumplandia.

It's why he likes Ivank and Jared best
Susan Parzybok (Redmond)
If the Times is correct....Mr. Scaramucci appears to be delusional about what the American people think of Trump. I can't wait for him to convince me and about 60% of American's that Trump is a great guy. I can say without any doubt, I can not be convinced! And another thing, this man has the ego of Trump but hopefully is a little more eloquent. He seems way too slick for me. He is the kind of man who would take your Grandmother's nest egg so he could make a buck. I thought Trump did not like Wall Street guys and gals. At least that's what he complained concerning Hillary. I know they call him Mucci but he is really just Scary!!!
Marshall Sahlins (Chicago, Il)
Mr Spicer was effectively displaced when Mr. Scaramucci was named Director of Communications for the White House. But why call it that? Given the relations of the White House to the Press, as already established in Mr. Spicer's tenure, the appropriate title should be Minister of Propaganda.
ChesBay (Maryland)
It's refreshing to know that Spicer found his backbone. It should have happened on day one.
Steve (Long Island)
Spicer was ill quipped to handle the vicious left wing radicals that make up the WH press corps. Those reporters all had an agenda, create conflict to get ratings. They were all truly obnoxious and unprofessional. Much like you deal with 6 year olds, the press should be lectured every day by Ms. Huckabee on manners and civility.
shep (jacksonville)
Yes, the disaster that is this presidency is all the press' fault. "There is none so blind as those who will not see."
LZM (New York)
Sarah Huckabee has no qualms about lying or ignoring facts. She is rude and sarcastic and obnoxious. I find it hard to reconcile her strong evangelical upbringing and education with her rude quips and willingness to ridicule in her attempt to force the lies coming from the White House down the throats of the reporters.
Calling main stream news media comprised of well-educated, knowledgeable journalists is simply absurd.
Lisa Cooper (Madison, WI)
No. The job of the American press is to report what is going on, to inquire and inquire until they get at the truth, not scrape and bow to the Supreme Leader. With the exception of Fox News, they have been doing their job extremely well.
Liz McDougall (Calgary, Canada)
I had a soft spot for Sean Spicer even thought he did the President's despicable bidding. He looked pained as he delivered his daily diatribe. Now there is a the smooth talker salesman at the helm who will ooze honey as he spins the message. He may actually be able to sell the President a bit more to the public but his slick love filled message may grate on the nerves - a little too sickly sweet for me.
UN (Seattle, WA---USA)
For those of us Americans who know a con artist when we see one--this slick talking phony salesman won't be able to convince us of anything. For Trumps base--overkill mainly because they are already delusional.
Jean (Holland Ohio)
I agree. He looked deeply troubled by the whole fiasco.
Phil Levitt (West Palm Beach)
They should at least put Spicer's image on the Purple Heart or invent a civilian award for enduring friendly fire. Also, the metaphor of a hapless broken hearted ventriloquist's dummy was never more apt.
Nelson (California)
Although Spicer has been relentlessly ridiculed and mocked, at least he has shown he has some degree of decency and self-respect. The same cannot be said for the rest of this pathetic circus that practices the pseudo politics of the absurd. Franz Kafka and Edgar Allan Poe would have trouble trying to compete with the real life whims and idiocies of this megalomaniac. The world cannot understand how a country, once respected and admired, could have possibly have elected a mentally unstable crook so guilty he is now exploring ways to pardon himself and his family group. SAD, VERY SAD!
UN (Seattle, WA---USA)
I do not feel a bit sad for Sean's exit. I always learned that we are judged by the company we keep. Sean was laying with the devil and got burned. No shock there.
FMR (New York , NY)
This imbecile megalomaniac will start a war to sideline the investigations. If e are not strong, diligent, and determined, we may well see him for two terms. Bannon is working on this, for sure.
Max Deitenbeck (East Texas)
Wake me up when it's Trump who has resigned.
CJ13 (California)
Trump was mortified and angered that a woman, Melissa McCarthy, played Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live.

I hope SNL selects a woman to play our fake president. Maybe it will push him over the edge and he will resign.
The Iconoclast (Oregon)
The Trump team can't do anything but react to its own mistakes. Talk about a circular firing squad.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders who has no problem lying her head off will be gone in a few months. And that's not even considering her know nothing approach to her job. She is so odious I change the channel whenever I encounter her.
Me Too (Georgia, USA)
It is a shame Spicer couldn't have taken his boss with him. Their departure would have been the most positive action in the Trump administration to date.
Mary Reinholz (New York City)
It's hard to take anybody in the Trump circle seriously, especially its godawful leader, but I liked Sean Spicer. He lied but remained an earnest soul while lying. He wanted to believe in his wretched boss. Spicer also had a sense of humor. And a dimple. Glad you got off the merry-go-around, Sean.
Gaucho54 (California)
I'm amazed at how people are fondly saying goodbye to Spicer.

As far as I'm concerned, he should have been forced to resign the first time he doubled down on a Trump lie. Spicer has played his part in spreading Trump's hateful and dangerous agenda, which could hurt all Americans.

At the very least, he should have voluntarily resigned in January, that is if he had an ounce of dignity.

Spicer has no credibility, no honor and is an embarrassment. Good riddance!
Joan White (San Francisco)
A column in the New York Times a little while ago advised members of the Trump team who considered leaving to do so quickly. The best book deals and money go to those who depart early. The rest will be left holding the bag. Looks like Spicer took your advice.
RCT (NYC)
People are commenting that Spicer is not that bright, but I do not think that is either true, or the problem. I think the problem was that Spicer was never committed to Trump's lies and deceptions. Although he held to the party line, I think that Spicer was appalled at and distressed by behavior and what he, Spicer was being forced to do.

It showed. Spicer simply is not that good a liar and, unlike the opportunists, salesmen and con artists in the Trump administration, was never able to put on a convincing act. His discomfort and grasp of reality always showed, in this evil land of Oz that Trump and his minions have created.

Scaramucci is different. Scaramucci is a convert and wholehearted opportunist. Those are the people Trump wants around him –con artists, users, crooks and climbers, all of whom depend on him for their survival and "success."

Runaway, Sean Spicer. Forget SNL - it was Trump, not you who Was the target of the parody. And if the parody was on target, what it showed was a man who was incredibly uncomfortable with what he was being compelled to say and so, and was overacting by mirroring his boss's aggression and hostility.

That is to your credit. Get a job. A real job. Get as far away from Trump and the sinking GOP as possible.
RLW (Chicago)
Spicer's resignation has been anticipated for months. The real question was why he took so long. The next question is how long before this whole White House of Fools finally collapses because of Trump's inadequacy as a CEO, and even as a person. How many others would want to work for someone as egocentric and narcissistic (and disloyal) as this so-called "President"? How many days before Sessions resigns? Or is Sessions just waiting for his pal Spence to become #36?
marian (Philadelphia)
I find some of the comments congratulating Spicer for his integrity on quitting team DT rather puzzling.
The only reason Spicer resigned was because he didn't get the Communications Director job and it went to another NY millionaire friend of DT- Mooch.
So, not sure Spicer deserves any kudos for integrity- if he had any integrity, he would never have stayed in this job for 6 months being forced to lie for a living.
RichMack (Montreal)
"...the most trying two-week stretch of Mr. Trump’s presidency"
In the spirit of Homer Simpson, I would add a "so far" -- because it seems every two-week stretch is "the most trying two-week stretch of Mr. Trump’s presidency" so far. Every week brings a new low, leaving many wondering: How much lower can rock-bottom be?

Here I am, wondering what Saturday Night Live will do with Scaramucci.
Mosttoothless (Boca Raton, FL)
If recent events "add to the confusion and uncertainty already engulfing the White house," the silver lining may continued distraction and delay in perpetrating Trump's harmful policy agenda.
Joel Parkes (Peterborough, Canada)
I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who chose to brazenly lie on behalf of one of the most disgusting persons in history. He chose to work for Trump. He chose to lie almost every time he spoke. I sincerely hope he suffers greatly for his actions.
Jean (Holland Ohio)
I suspect he has been suffering for 6 months. I hope he finds some way to repent and go out of his way to do something constructive for part of American society after this. And I hope he has a loving family to help him transition back to a peaceful and happy life.
md (USA)
The abject cruelty and depravity of this President towards Spicer is epitomized by one incident. Spicer, a devout Catholic, was "punished" by Trump by not allowing him an audience with the Pope, while his immediate family (including Kushner) was. The pettiness and cruelty of this is unfathomable.
I do believe that Spicer has some form of dyslexia, often on display in the way he often misspoke and mispronounced long names. I in no way am a fan of Spicer, but I abhor cruelty even more.... and the cruelty towards Spicer was nauseating.
ellie k. (michigan)
People who are applauding the resignation of Spicer as some sort of sign of character fail to realize it comes as he was about to have a new boss forced on him. True redemption for Spicer would have come weeks ago had he resigned when he was forced to concoct a new stack of lies for the President.
Doug Terry (Maryland, USA)
We have seen this week, writ large, that anyone who dares try to serve this president will pay dearly for having made the effort. Still, the lure of power, prestige and working in the White House draws people in like moths to the flame. Don't they see what is bound to happen to them? The flames await.

Before a full year is out, every top aide in the White House will likely have been replaced and tarnished permanently in the process. No one is exempt. Those who fly away should count themselves lucky if they manage to leave without an indictment chasing them.
Eric F (N.J.)
Did anyone else notice Trump's line expressing Spicer's assured future success. "Just look at his great television ratings,". I guess for someone like me, who has never been on television and has no wish to be on TV, success is impossible.
I'm hardly surprised that Trump's brain works this way but it still shocking to see the President of the United States express success or failure in such a childish way.
cec (odenton)
I'm always amazed when someone publicly lambasts Trump, as Scaramucci did can turn around and say ( 50 times ?) that " I love President Trump". Same goes for Ted Cruz. Were they lying then or are they lying now? Even a greater head scratcher is the public acceptance of such flip flops.
a href= (New York)
"Operatic fashion"?

Commedia dell'arte (Scaramuccia, who became Scaramouche in Fr. and Eng., was a minor role) developed into a broad European tradition of popular theater, but had much a greater resemblance to Burslesque or Music Hall than opera lyrica.

Scaramuccia's boasts regarding his valiant service in the wars ("scaramuccio" is a somewhat disdainful word for "little battle," we would say "skirmish") would invariably be deflated and ridiculed by the drama, right through to the puppet-theater traditions of "Punch and Judy."

We should never impugn a person's character or performance based on his heritage or associations with his name, but his colleagues calling him "Mooch" seems a strange tribute to either or both.

Regards,
JV
Dr. John Burch (Mountain View, CA)
I'm not buying it. If Spicer is so praiseworthy, why did it take the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci for him to display his integrity? What he should have done is quit after he was asked to defend the first bold-faced lie from Trump. Maybe now, when he is out of the Washington chaos, he will tell us all the truth what has been going on in the White House.
Winemaster2 (GA)
How can this be abrupt, when it has been obvious that Trump and his mouth peace had their differences and that core Catholic, when it came to telling lies followed the GOP mantra, Of course, he had to resign because the con man fraud with his megalomania , compulsive-obsessiveness , just could not function with the real truth. Trump's world is all made up of lies and uncouth, lout is too used to functioning in that mode.
C# (Shelter Island NY)
Good for you. It's was written on the wall after his first news briefing he was not going to last. Trump never had his back.
For his critics, put yourself in his place. He was a loyal soldier. He did what the President asked him to say. The result was increased criticism from the press who were confounded by what they heard from his daily briefings. His frustration grew as he had to convey the confusing paranoid messages from Trump the Terrible. Trump is everyone's worst nightmare as a boss.
He was savaged on SLN.
I do believe Reince will not hang around either. Trump surrounds himself with
sycophants and close family members. He trusts no one outside this circle.
I hope Spicey writes a book.
Stefan (Boston)
The WH continues to be a parody of Godfather's mansion-except that the characters in the latter were brighter. I suggest a revision of their slogan: instead of "Repeal and Replace Obamacare" we should promote: "Repeal and Replace Trump".
tedc (dlaas)
It is the extreme reality TV show; the more unbelievable and speechless the better. Democracy is what the voters deserve; the problem is not DT but us.
FMR (New York , NY)
Yes, the problem is the American electorate. That we elected this boor of a would-be-dictator and now tolerate him and his minions says it all. There is no hope if we get used to this.
Luther Jamieson (Allentown)
Trump and his entire circle of minions should be required to wear body cams. And the entire country should give thanks for Jeff Bezos for his purchase of the Washington Post, making it strong, incorruptable and beyond reproach. Thank you Mr. Bezos.
Andrew (NYC)
As the investigations of Trump and his family and team continue over the next 7.5 (or further into Ivanka's administration) years it is unlikely that press briefings and conferences would continue anyhow

And the trust that the voters of most states have in Trump is rock solid. They don't need the media to do any reporting, just Trump's Tweets and Hannity's bloviating.

And for the rest of us just about everything coming out of the WH is at best infuriating and at worst a lie.
Bob Aceti (Oakville Ontario)
The WH communications roles are propoganda officers. Anthony Scaramucci is the new Chief Propoganda Officer". Ms. Huckabee-Sanders is a foil. While Sanders is following the family business within the Political-Industrial Complex, Scaramucci is planning his golden years as bigger fund manager after he solidifies Trump insider status - for which his clients will pay to play when he leaves office.

The narrative about duty to country and how Scaramucci's family were military vets when Anthony was too young to join military ranks is a convenient excuse to feign patriotism. If America stands for something that something is the ability to live like a billionaire, even if one-one hundredth of one percent actually achieve that goal - most of whom started off by the hard work of showing up to the family's estate trustee office to collect their inheritance.

Mike Bloomberg, a top ten US multi-billionaire, gave a resounding speech at the DNC. His comment, "I'm a New Yorker. I know a con when I see one." was directed to Donald Trump's character.

Anthony Scaramucci is self-described as a veteran Wall Streeter. It will take more than an upstart hedge fund operator from NYC whose timing during the financial history in 1997-2017, working as an industry insider (Goldman), to detract from Mike Bloomberg's assessment. Bloomberg status as a three-term New York City Mayor and very successful Wall Street idustrialist (ITC/Financial terminals and business media) trumps Donald Trump.

I had wondered how long it would take. I always said he had one of the hardest jobs ever. Having to constantly back track because of ever changing stories and ever changing "truths" must have created incredible stress. While the content of his answers were not always agreeable to me, he did as best as anyone could in his position, and I found Sean warm and human. My first impression of the new guy is cold and robotic. Good luck Sean! I think we may end up missing you!
Rita (California)
Way too much drama.

Trump must think he is still in the tv business.
Independent (the South)
My impression of Sean Spicer is he isn't that bright.
Jim (WI)
Okay I have to admit Trumps antics are in the comedic now. It's like Mel Brooks playing King Louis. It's good to be the king.
However there is no way this guy colluded with the Russians. He can't even collude with his own stafff.
Renegator (NY state)
I doubt that he colluded. I think it is more likely that he borrowed a lot of money and ended up owing them a lot of big favors
FMR (New York , NY)
He didn't collude. He was willingly and easily and criminally used.
Matthew C. Johnson (Iowa)
Nobody can be happier about this than Spicer himself. Run Sean Run! You're free!!!

My question is: what took Spicer so long to resign and? Is reflected glory and proximity to power really worth selling your soul for?

Poor Sean Spicer, he never had what it took to be Chief Truthteller of the Ministry of Truth.

"a White House brimming with dissent and intrigue"

In Texas we call that manure. And in Trump's case, your boots can't be too high, and you can't shovel fast enough.

Isn't Sarah Huckebee Sanders the daughter of the Christian minister, Mike Huckabee? If so, isn't lying still a sin in Christianity? I guess not - or Sarah didn't learn much from her father.
Terri Smith (USA)
Sarah did learn from her father and that is exactly why she lies with impunity.
J-Dog (Boston)
Actually, she learned a lot. It's what he does.

Spivey should have seen the writing on the wall the day Comey was fired andSpicey and his pals spent the that night in the shrubbery.

My vote is for Leslie Jones to portray Sarah Huckabee Sanders on SNL.

Lord Snooty (Monte Carlo)
Spicey's gone but it doesn't bode well with Scaramunga. His effusive sycophantic warblings to the President frankly made me want to throw up.

I give him a few months... before he's fired.
JulieB (NYC)
I respectfully disagree. He's just young enough to be Donald's firstborn. He's from NY and has a swagger and ego just like the Trumps. You know the Don--he takes care of his own.
Medman (worcester,ma)
The empire is falling apart under a disgusting con man pathological liar. No one with any self respect would work for the man as demonstrated by so many vacancies unfilled by the con man. He survives by fake news, fear mongering and lies. But what goes around comes around. His connection with the KGB is crystal clear and the whole machine was linked with them. Con man cannot sleep now and he is afraid of being in prison rather than Hillary. His insecurity is reflected every day. And the liar king comes up with new fake stories every day.
Renegator (NY state)
Many people look forward to Trump's fall. The problem is that he is like a cornered animal. He will do anything to try to save his life. Clearly, he has been doing that all along. But as the pressure increases, we can expect to see even more outrageous behaviour and accusations
FMR (New York , NY)
As he grows more desperate, Trump could well start a war in order to sideline the investigations and to declare autocratic "emergency powers." Let's watch for that.
whaddoino (Kafka Land)
The NYT and the press should keep doing its job of mercilessly savaging those who lie and deny basic facts. I look forward to Scaramucci's ruin.
Mike (Buford)
His performance was nothing short of.Bagdad Bob if you remember him
Marie Muir (Florida)

What does this mean?
"and Mr. Scaramucci even suggested his role would be to unshackle an already unfettered president."
How do you unshackle (unconstrained/unlimited) something unfettered

Just more words........these guys do not even know what the are saying.
More stupidity.......the daily assualt to intelligence from the gang in DC.

Love and Money can be blinding.

Who are the "two people with direct knowledge of the exchange"? Until you report more than just hearsay, you are nothing more than rumor. Remember; Who, What, Where, When.
shep (jacksonville)
I guess we should have disregarded the information provided by Deep Throat during Watergate because it was "hearsay." The truth is the truth, and that is what is going to bring down this administration. By the way, since the use of "hearsay" seems to have such importance to you, you might want to educate yourself about the co-conspirator exception to the hearsay rule (something law students are taught during their first year because it is such a basic concept).
Michael (North Carolina)
I hope a reporter asks, If “...the American people probably see the president the way (you) do,” why did you take the job?
Jcav55 (northeast)
I have a funny feeling I'll need to take a shower every time the Mooch appears.
Paul (Greensboro, NC)
Now we have to listen to the silver-tongue of the "Mooch." This reality show is just that, it's all about TV ratings. Trump said, “Just look at his great television ratings,” predicting Spicer will succeed in the future.

When I grew up in New York City. leaving in 1979, we called "Moochers" those persons who lived off others without giving anything in return. At the time, we also called them "one-way streets." That's real clear --their purely selfish and obsessed by themselves.
Fits Trumps loyal friends perfectly. They are a certain type of New Yorker.
Similar to mafioso and thugs, loyal up to a point --- until you betray them by withdrawing your loyalty.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
Paul writes, "it's all about TV ratings".

And how is this different from prior administrations?
Sarah (Vermont)
The most trying two week stretch? Every day since January 20, 2017 has been the most trying! Trump continues to unravel our great nation with his every action. He and his family, and his inner circle are falling apart.
William Wintheiser (Minnesota)
Make promises then lie and bully your way to the top. Clean out the swamp of those kinds of people. Put in my kind who love the mud and pestilence. I'd say it's been a rather successful six months so far. Long live the king.
JMT (Minneapolis MN)
Casting calls are already out for a fresh faced comedian to play the role of Scaramucci on SNL. It won't take long before Scaramucci gives SNL writers the material they need to conduct the tryouts.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
And since too many Americans - far too many - get their "information" from shows such as SNL, it's small wonder that we have far too many Americans with little real knowledge about how the business of government is conducted.
Cletus (Milwaukee, WI)
He already has with his umpteenth statement of love.
FMR (New York , NY)
It's important to ridicule the ridiculous, publicly and often.
robert (new york. n.y.)
Scaramucci is a younger polished version of President Trump. He comes across --based upon his initial White House debut yesterday-- as a smooth talking wheeler-dealer who clearly knows how to "walk the walk and talk the talk " that the President likes. He will be perfect in helping to cover up the deceit and lies that daily emanate from Trump's chaotic mouth and brain. I predict that Scaramucci, as the most polished and self-confident public member of the White House staff, will periodically start to slowly take over some of the duties as the White House Press Secretary, thereby causing more internal unpleasantness for Huckabee-Sanders and the already White house staff. already in constant, daily disarray. And since Scaramucci is obviously much richer than all the other White House staff (none-Trump family) government employees, Trump will automatically favor him more for that reason alone, and give him more responsibility behind the scenes.
Christy (Blaine, WA)
I felt sorry for him at first, but he should have resigned on day one rather than sacrifice his integrity to back up Trump's lies. His reputation can never be repaired, just like others forever stained by enabling this fake president.
Gshock2008 (Minnesota)
Mr. Spicer and Mr. Priebus are party establishment figures that operate out of their own self-interest. Mr. Trump, Mr. Kushner, Mr. Bannon and Ms. Conway are non-establishment figures that operate out of their own self-interest. What could be the common theme of the Trump Administration?
Bruce (Reno, NV)
Another example of loyalty demanded but not given. He probably wishes he'd done this five months ago.
JE (Connecticut)
The writers at SNL have all been called in from vacation. Melissa and Alec have been scheduled to co-host the season opener. Too bad we have to wait until September.
William (Ontario)
While there's still time, Trump should withdraw Callista Gingrich's nomination as ambassador to the Vatican and name Spicer instead. He owes him that much for the indignity and abuse he has suffered.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
But the majority of the abuse Mr. Spicer has suffered has come from the people in his audience during press conferences. I have felt sympathy for Mr. Spicer and anger at the 'ladies and gentlemen of the press' who would not allow Mr. Spicer to speak a complete sentence without rude interruptions again and again.
Green River (Illinois)
I would have resigned the day I (a Catholic) was left out of meeting the Pope. No, actually I would have resigned sat 1/21 when I was told to defend the crowd size. In my Catholic schooling we were taught "freedom with responsibility." I don't wish Spicer any ill, but wow...talk about selling your soul. And Callista for Vatican Ambassador..the Pope should refuse her. Sorry, affairs are not in the rule book...
shep (jacksonville)
Your anger should be at a man who lies with impunity, but then, it is quite clear that the First Amendment has no importance to you. The press is doing its job. Bet you never complained about their aggressive questioning at press conferences under other administrations. The hypocrisy of the true believers is truly astounding.
Thomas (Massachusetts)
Spicey should do an instant tell-all. Would sell like hotcakes.
Cheekos (South Florida)
As I read that Sean Spicer's regination "rattled an administration already reeling from the most trying two-week stretch of Mr. Trump’s presidency", I can only wonder when the "next most" will surface within the Trump Regime. When any organization cab be characterized as "Confusion and Chaos", it surely cannot accomplish anything, when it cannot get its own House in Order!

When will this all end? When we are all taking Russian class?

https://thetruthoncommonsense.com
Peter (CT)
What's with all the praise for Sean Spicer? When someone stops punching you in the face, you feel relief, but you don't need to start saying that now you like them.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
That's how I felt about the treatment Sean Spicer from the 'ladies and gentlemen of the press' - they were punching him from the moment he came to the mic..........
Charles (Michigan)
" Buckle up its going to be a bumpy ride."
Thomas Renner (New York)
This is really like a very bad soap opera. The white house is being run more and more by the trump family and trump pals. Trump, himself, seems to live in his alternative universe more and more. It seems like his major goal is not to do a great job for the American people but to keep his family out of jail and to sell the American people the idea he is doing a great job. The really scary part here is there are 3 and 1/2 more years to go!!!
ZL (Boston)
To borrow a term, this is fake news. The real news is Trump's asking his lawyers whether or not he can pardon himself. Who does that if they're not guilty as sin? Spicer's removal/resignation is just a way to keep the Mueller story off the front page or below the fold.
Loren Bartels (Tampa Florida)
Mr. Spicer became tendernized steak, had been through the tenderize so many times that he was effectively shredded.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
Agree...........it was the members of the press who shredded him. I expect he was stunned at their treatment of him.
shep (jacksonville)
You obviously know nothing about Spicer's background or experience. He was a seasoned a well-respected political operative before he became ensnared with the so-called president, and was well liked by the press. On his very first day on the job, he was required to lie about something (crowd size) that was readily disproven. Why was he forced to lie? To satisfy the insatiable ego of his boss.

If Spicer was "stunned" by anything, he was stunned by his boss' lies, corruption and complete lack of loyalty to his own employees. The person who should be ashamed of his treatment of Spicer is Mr. Trump, but that would require him to have a conscience.

I hope Spicer writes a book about the disaster that is this administration. It will be a best seller throughout the world (except in Russia, where Putin is sure to ban it). The truth of this presidency is going to make a Grisham novel look tame.
Azalea Lover (Atlanta GA)
I cannot say you are wrong.......but I can say that I believe the truth of the last several administrations would make a Grisham novel look tame.

The most eloquent statement in today's Times is this:

“I liked it when there were fringes on the left and the right and a somewhat rational center,” David said. “We’ve lost the center. Normal people are wary of politics, with good reason. It’s a very dirty business.”

I wonder how many of Trump's minions are worried about him tossing his "goodest best friend" Sessions under the bus. No job is worth working for a crazy man. I don't like Spicy, but I'm sure he will be better off in his next role. Trump not letting Spicy meet the Pope was typical pettyness from a vindictive and paranoid lunatic.

I thought Sean should have walked out after the Donald did him dirt in Rome by denying him the opportunity to meet the Pope just because he felt like being a nasty, vindictive worm of a man. I felt terrible for him. Having to go to work every day for a mean girl can't be easy.

trump's man:
"“I hope he goes on to make a tremendous amount of money.”

Right in line with the replacement of our great American human values with the narrow aspirations of a egomaniacal self-proclaimed multi-billionaire for whom only money and his own precious well-licked buttocks are important.

Now we will say at birthdays, "I hope you go on to make tremendous amounts of money" , at baptisms. "May this child of God go on to make tremendous amounts of money", at weddings, "I hope you go on to make tremendous amounts of money", at funerals, "May he go on to make tremendous amounts of money".

Trump, if he can, will do all he can to make sure Spicer makes no money: he's disloyal. He disagreed.

Spicer better write that book in a secret location and send it to the free press right away.

And Lordy, I hope there's a book.
Alex (Canada)
Scaramucci looks like a wiseguy. And he hopes spicer makes a tremendous amount of money, because that, of course, will entirely make up for the integrity he flushed down the toilet and the credibility he has lost.
Chris (NYC)
Spicer was the nominal communications professional in this bandit regime, tasked with making his boss's lies spin in a press conference. Scaramucci (the name literally means 'skirmishes') is a male Kellyanne, the slick lawyer of a crooked regime, all deflection and denial. Scaramucci will be well suited to the Bannonite meta-mission, which is to destroy the institution of the press and pro journalism by glib chatter, channel-based propaganda, and sneers. The Skirmisher makes official the Kremlin style in communications. Watch the clip of those fat, post-soviet party hacks, laughing at Putin's jibes around Western culture, while Putin sits on a gilded throne on a raised dias. It woudn't occur to a single one to ask a hard question. The independent press must be ruthless in exposing this subversion.
Paul King (USA)
"Sigh…

Gonna miss Baghdad Bob… I mean Sean.

It's a common belief that you can only encounter people detached from reality in the subway. Sean fought that stereotype so effectively. It was a valiant one man mission.

As for Scaramucci, we now have proof possitive that cells swabed from Trump's cheek in 1978 were used to successfully clone a slightly faster talking, more weight appropriate but no less unctuous, self-promoting and completely unbelievable replica of the original.

And, just as nauseating.

I miss you Sean!!"
AW (Minneapolis, MN)
Just waiting for U.S. Congress to follow Poland's lead and try to rewrite (or just ignore) the Constitution so that Trump can replace all SCOTUS justices of his choice. Then throw in some dirt to get Sessions booted, replace the Deputy AG, and the Party's set! (weepy t/i/c)

Trump is going to war and he is picking his generals. You lefties better be ready for a Republican that doesn't fold. Be careful what you wish for. Democrats have made a practice of accusing Republicans of exactly what they are doing. Makes defending yourself look like sour grapes. Republicans usually back down when this happens. You are about to be, as they say, "Hoisted on your own Petard"
Paul King (USA)

More sideshow as Trump and Bannon and a horribly complicit Republican congress trash the nation. Let's keep our eyes on the issues and keep the pressure on our poor excuse for a legislature.
Dr E (SF)
He should hang his head in shame. For six months he lied, knowingly, blatantly, repeatedly, to the American public on behalf of Trump. And when the media called him on it? He attacked them - a disgraceful tactic used by fascists and dictators to undermine the truth and circumvent the facts in a desperate attempt to stay in power. And in so doing, he threatened the most valuable asset our constitutional democracy possesses: a free press. He is a disgrace and every bit the traitor his former boss is
Renegator (NY state)
Absolutely. Our compassion makes us want to feel sorry for him. But he deserves no pity. As you point out, he lied repeatedly in the most outrageous manner.
Rea Tarr (Malone, NY)
Curiously -- or maybe inevitably -- Mr. Scaramucci's name is just a letter short of one of the versions (Scaramuccia) of "Scaramouche," the stock character in Italian commedia dell'arte who is always the sneaky, unscrupulous servant with a love for intrigue. He's the not-always-amusing weasel who will, with his intrigues, make innocent bystanders his victims.

Are we ready for this next act, America?

Scaramucci: I think there’s been, at times, a disconnect between the way we see the president and how much we love the president and the way some of you perhaps see the president.

This reminded me of something my grandfather used to say: You can pour diamonds on dogsh*t, but you will never cover up the smell.
Jake (NY)
There is just so much lying that one can do before the truth smothers you. When almost everything Trump says is an outright lie, you have to know when any job is not worth throwing your integrity, your character, and your reputation under the bus to "protect" this man. Spicer knew it was time, he knew with the new guy coming in, it would only get worse. There's a time when you have to look at yourself in the mirror, look at your family in the face, and look at what you have become in life to please this man and keep your job. No job is worth throwing yourself under the bus for the sake of this very twisted thinking man in the WH.
David Flannery (Santa Rosa Beach, Florida)
Not fair! What's SNL to do? Think of Ms. McCarthy? This was classic TV brought to us by The White House!

Spicer already proved over the past 6 months that he has no integrity whatsoever. Even his resignation was not driven by any sense of honor or decency. He resigned simply because his bruised ego is as fragile as Trump's. Spicer wanted to be communications director but Trump rejected him, blindsided him and chose a billionaire suck-up, instead.

Looking forward to Spicer's autobiography about his 180 days and his role defending the most corrupt and dysfunctional White House in history. Call it 24/7/180...

After 8 years of No drama Obama we have drama from the Trumpsters everyday and plenty of fodder for the late night comedians and SNL. What will poor Melissa McCarthy do? I bet there will be plenty of fodder. This guy Mooch will keep the feeding frenzy alive. Spicer should have got his opportunity to meet the pope but he can take a vacation like Bill O'Really and go meet the pope as a private citizen. It must have taken a lot of courage for Sean Spicer to tell the commander in chief that he is making a mistake hiring Mooch. Bye Sean. Let me give you a tip for the rest of your career. Think before you shoot your mouth off. Words are like bullets, once they leave your mouth it is hard to get them back. Hope the rest of your life is spicier than the spicy six months of 2017.
Mmac (N.C.)
Loving this.

Trump is also expecting a resignation from Jeff Sessions, so he can appoint someone else as AG.
Thanks to the NYT for giving Trump a platform to remove Sessions and get a new AG. <<sarcasm :(

Now Russia says the former Ambassador discussed sanctions with Sessions too. Its all in an effort to get a new AG. Russia!!

I guess the "mere chit chat" as described by Fox News of the Trump and Putin communication, was about securing more Russian help to scuttle anything that would not help Trump get more complete control of both houses AND end the Russian investigation.

Democrats have lost the last 4 special elections. Anyone who thinks the most powerful criminal cyber state is not rigging our elections, and cleaning their tracks phenomenally, is extremely naive and unschooled about the Criminal Cyber world.

Just a few black hat hackers can change election results and/or tallies, and be home for an early lunch. Our cyber capabilities stink to Russia and back. For this hacking to stop, the democrats have to get paper ballots, UN observers or something.

Sessions will soon be gone. The next AG might be Trump"s wife!! The forced resignation and firing will continue until our entire electoral process is FULLY ceeded to Russia for all time.

Meanwhile, the hacking continues as the Russians perfect their knowledge of our voting machines, tallying processes-- and Trump assists in dismantling our democracy so Putin does not release damaging information on him.

Sadder and sadder!!

JCS (E.U.)
Today reminds me of the May day, May day when Kellyanne got outed that she´d blurted out, after one of her numerous impossible defenses of the indefensible stuff Trump keeps spewing around: "I need to take a shower."

Now Sean Spicer shows he got a tiny hand width of a spine left, reminding of his Irish heritage and Marine Corps background, and he signals loud and crystal clear in an official act, that for the past six months he´s been trapped in his own personal "Whatever Center" and he needs to escape the showers.

Trump, like a Mafia godfather, demands loyalty to Trump to trump everything.

He expected Sessions, his AG of all people, to light a match to the law and violate it in broad daylight by not recusing himself from an investigation in which he is himself subject of investigation. Now that´s demanding from the people you chose to serve the U.S.A. to put personal loyalty over loyalty to U.S. law and (constitutional) order, protecting its people from sheer villainy. At their own peril at that.

From Spicer he expected he´d mime all the President´s lies, in a suit.

This time around Spicer got the big pond right: he identified correctly the oceans spanning swamp ruled by ruthless creatures, where "scary movie" Scaramucci has been swamping around, as does Spicer's ex-boss and the bulk of his Team Swamp.

We can now answer the question Trump posed right from the beginning, "Doesn´t the guy own a (...) suit?"

He does, in contrast to the God Emperor of Bathrobe Vengeance.

Spicer really tried hard to be a part of "Little Boot's" administration. His resignation is yet another sign that this election process is flawed and susceptible. Tick tock Donny, time is running out. You will be remembered forever as the worst U.S. president of all time. Congrats!
David (Omaha)
Are you kidding me right now? Everyone knows that no president will ever be worse than Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce.
Perspective (Bangkok)
Good riddance to Spicer. But his replacement is even more loathsome . . . And, Lord, will his nihilism and lies on behalf of Mr Trump set the image of Italian-Americans like me back.
Rob (NYC)
A tell all book would be quite a read. Have the offers begun to pour in?
John Q. Public (California)
Say what?! NOBODY "loves" the President except Donald Trump.

Rhetorical question: If Trump were to commit suicide, could he pardon himself beforehand?

Good riddance to a man who was rightly held in slight regard by most thinking people. I have more respect for the last guy in the circus parade who sweeps up the animal waste.

I think Huckabee Sanders is doing, and will do, an extraordinary job. She stays calm and is logical in the face of absurd, repetitive questions from the press. Being the daughter of Mike Huckabee, and the daughter-in-law of Bernie Sanders, I would expect as much.

“The good news is the people get it, even if the media doesn’t.” You didn't mean it this way, since everything you say and do is about you, but the good news is for the country, not for you. On 11/8, 3 million more of us expressed our preference for your opponent. Only the quirk of our dumbocracy -- the Electoral College, which gives much greater weight to votes in poorly educated, sparsely populated areas of the country -- put you in the White House. If you check all the polls, you would see that if the election were re-run today, you would lose the popular vote by a lot more than 3 million -- there's a lot of buyers' remorse in those polls -- and you would be back in NY shafting your business associates.
David (Omaha)
Hillary Clinton won California by 4 million votes. Therefore, in the other 49 states, Donald Trump won by 1 million votes.
Grandpa (Carlisle, MA)
@David So? California is part of the United States, last time I checked. In fact, it's about 12.25% of the US population.

We should be electing presidents as a democracy would -- one person, one vote, majority rules. Why should votes in Wyoming, for example, be worth almost 4x (3.7 to be exact) those in California? This anti-democratic method has given us two disastrous minority presidencies in 16 years. It needs to be fixed, so we can actually become the democracy we keep talking about.
The Urbanist (Chicago)
I cannot understand why people are patting Spicer on the back for "demonstrating intergrity" for resigning.

He resigned because the "President" hired The Mooch, which essentially made his role obsolete. Period. However, I will be the first in line to pat him on the back if he confesses to all the lies he was forced to feed the press and the American public, and admit that he and the President made a mockery of these press briefing

Liar-in-Chief Donald Trump wants a top liar. Sean got some integrity: Bad, very sad ( Trump's tweet), extremely sad ...for a good liar!
Professor liar Trump is not a happy boss. He wants the same kind, same chemistry " Likes" dislike " Dislikes" ha ha

Scaramucci is a more slick version of the guys who come Home Shopping Network. He is a savvy billionaire, with education, intelligence and articulation, who can sell you anything. Selling ice box to Eskimos living in an igloo in northern Alaska would be the easiest sales for him.

Watch our dumb compliant lazy not-so-investigative-or-socially-relevant, a bit of an elite, Mass Media eat out of his hands. Scaramucci already complimented them, put comfortable ice on their heads, rose petals on their feet, massaged their backs with flattery and handed them verbal flowerpots. Our Mass Media is eating like Mexican Flan (which I love very much, and will eat it wherever and whenever it is served). :))

Only thing missing is David Copperfield's Las Vegas Magic show to accompany this show.

Ladies and Gentleman I give you Scaaaaraaaaamuuuuucci! (Bright colorful lights on and applause, applause, applause).

According to Wikipedia, Scaramoche is a 'clown character with the combined attributes of servant and henchman, often beaten for his boasting and cowardice'.
We now have one as Trump's spokesperson. How very apt.
Scaramochi, Scaramochi, can you do the Trumpdango?

The longer this goes on, the more convinced I am that we are all in some crazy TV show.

This is the last day that anyone will respect or believe Anthony Scaramucci, except the 52% of Trump voters who believe Mr. Obama was born in Kenya. The horrific dumbing down of a fine Harvard degree.
Paul King (USA)
Sigh…

Gonna miss Baghdad Bob… I mean Sean.

It's a common belief that you can only encounter people detached from reality in the Subway. Sean fought that stereotype so effectively. It was a valiant one man mission.

As for Scaramucci (I hear he changed it from Goldberg… relax I'm Jewish) we now have proof possitive that cells swabed from Trump's cheek in 1978 were used to successfully clone a slightly faster talking, more weight appropriate but no less unctuous, self-promoting and completely unbelievable replica of the original.

And, just as nauseating.

I miss you Sean!!
Lawrence Heyn (Brisbane)
At last, Sean Spicer has regained some self-respect. It must have been hard for him to be the butt of so many jokes from so many. Good luck to him.
Jack (New York)
Spicer is about as significant as an insect on a donkey. Forget Spicer. It's a distraction. Keep your focus on Trump and company obstruction of justice, conflict of interest and emoluments clause violations.

Only in chaos does trump find peace. It's a paradox but that's often the internal workings of the severely damaged, creating external tumult to offset internal tension, reaching a state of equilibrium, but never peace.
Kevin (Austin)
Why do I get the feeling that a Puccini villain has now entered the stage, joining what is a nightmarish opera? Scaramucci is truly frightening, as his only role is obviously to be human varnish for this stain of a President, a smooth singer with better hair.
ed zachary (santa cruz)
Sara Huckabee Sanders looked like a wooden Indian while she read the opening statements. No eye contact with the audience, no emotion, no expression in her voice. Scarmucci, on the other hand was smooth and slick...so slick indeed that when he finished his remarks they all felt like snake oil. Most people in the country and certainly all of the press except the NJM (nut job media) would agree that the White House has a credibility problem. To not acknowledge that is to look like yet another carnival barker instead of a thoughtful communications director.
CD (NYC)
I have neither sympathy nor respect for Spicer ... He was paid to lie from the beginning and knew what he was doing ... But his lies about the size of the inaugural crowd could never match Sarah H Sanders declaring that Trump won the election 'overwhelmingly' .... Spicer left because he was told that he would be subservient to Scaramucci ... This new guy is so so so effusive it might make even Trump pass out from a sugar rush ... He handles the press well, he's relatively attractive and smiles a lot, especially compared to Spicer's grimace. The result? Scaramucci will get too much attention and Jared or Junior will remind Trump that he was originally not a supporter and he'll be gone ...
Steve Cole (Ocean City, NJ)
Two thoughts come to mind :

You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig! and

Rearranging the chairs on the deck of the TITANIC failed to save it.

I'm afraid we're in for more of this idiocy and chaos. We must neutralize this regime in 2018 and vote it out in 2020.

Relying on Rupert Murdoch's FOX news and the tiny and unknown alt press as a way of selling the dirty deeds of a tiny cabal of small minded oligarchs was Spicey's big mistake. America's corporate press now being aquired by other oligarchs will not be ignored. Blowing a kiss at them may be an acknowledgement that they realize the lamestream cannot be ignored and a signal of a greater danger. 45 is realizing he needs the real press to achieve his nefarious ends. Danger...

The white house problem is not a PR problem.
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
The White House press corps benefitted greatly from Spicer's presence.

After all, how many skits had Saturday Night Live done about the WH press secretary before Spicer came along? Had you ever heard of Glenn Thrush until Melissa McCarthy immortalized him as "The Michelin Man??

A tougher question: Will SNL continue with its "White House press briefing" skits, swapping in Sarah Huckabee Sanders for Spicer? She's already been in a few SNL skits, but one senses the SNL writers' hearts just aren't in it when she's the main subject. Melissa McCarthy played a great Sean Spicer, but I can't even remember the name of whatever SNL actress plays Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Undoubtedly SNL could have a field day with Scaramucci, but my hunch is that he won't expose himself to the media much. Looks like its Sarah Huckabee Sanders or -- dare I say it? --- SNL will have to move on to some other WH figure. Not sure who that might be, though, since pretty much everyone has been the focus of SNL skits already.

One exception: Mike Pence. He's been in a few SNL skits, to be sure, but not many. Two problems with Spence, though: First, he's not seen much, but enough that SNL can't just "create" him out of whole cloth (a la Steve Bannon, for example). Second, he's boring. Spicer wasn't that -- nor is Jared Kushner, or Donald Trump, Jr., or Steve Bannon. Or Trump himself.

Advice to Scaramucci: (1) Keep a low profile. (2) Consider quitting, soon. Frankly, I doubt you'd be missed.
Woody Packard (Lewiston, Idaho)
Tony, Tony, you are wasting your breath. I will not love him any more, even though it is true that I cannot love him any less.
unclejake (fort lauderdale, fl.)
The only statement I want to see is a quote from his contract concerning the non disclosure clause. It is a public document and it must be a denial of Spicer's First Amendment rights of Free Speech to have a public employee, the Trumpster, attempt to restrict another public employee. Who pays their salaries anyway?
Snip (Canada)
This is non-news. We are all watching Trump play the juggler with people as his props. He tosses them up and around and out and we're fascinated, and that's what Trump wants, everybody's eyes on him all the time. Meanwhile the government does practically nothing. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Trump is doing all the leaking of documents and gossip. He's running a "reality" show and we're the suckers. He knows there's no such thing as bad publicity. We'll get so used to him we'll miss him when he's gone. I bet some people will vote for him in 2020 based on the entertainment factor alone.
James Osborne (K.C., Mo.)
Sorry about Sean really his appearances in the beginning were clumsy and a little "ham handed"..he made an honest effort to change his presentations and had some success. It's going to sound condescending but in part he was kind of a "lovable loser"..charged with the impossible job of defending the drunk engineer of a terrible train wreck.
Richard (Takoma Park, MD)
The wagons are circling around Trump family interests, not the interests of the American people. The role of communication from the White House is to further divide us, not to provide leadership. The loss of even the pretense of respect for the truth has set America down a path towards chaos.
Bayricker (Washington)
Explain how a "long anticipated resignation" could rattle anybody in the White House? The statement is contradictory.
Cassandra (NYC)
I turned on the TV just in time to hear Scaramucci say that "Mr. Trump is a wonderful human being." DUMBFOUNDED, I turned off the TV and washed out my ears!

I know nothing about Mr. Scaramucci - but from the little I've seen and read I have come to the conclusion that he is not someone from whom I would buy a used car.
Abel Fernandez (NM)
Trump is running a reality show. The country won't get out alive.
Elizabeth Wilson (Canada)
Spicer has been complicit in the deceit coming from the WH since day one. He may have provided some entertainment during a time our world is being torn apart by a dangerously inept President but he did not resign to regain his integrity. He has none. He resigned because Scaramucci was hired into a job he himself wanted. He is leaving in a huff.
Liz Weinmann (New York)
SNL's new star as The Mooch? Rob Lowe. He's about the same age, has already starred as a "West Wing" operative on NBC, and has current NBC comedy chops - from "Parks and Recreation."
Jimi (Cincinnati)
Donald Trump has clearly illustrated how vindictive & hateful he is towards anyone who doesn't parrot his words and thinking - but how can I possibly respect a guy (Spicer) who begins by claiming Trumps inauguration crowd was enormous & bigger than the one at Obama's - while simple photos illustrate the total opposite.

To repeat what was said on The News Hour - "not one person's reputation has been enhanced by their association with Donald Trump or this White House"

I'm sure it has been an insane 6 months & I hope the salary made it worth it.
John Conroy (Los Angeles)

USMC1954 (St. Louis)
Just like Icarus, Spicer flew to near the Sun. There should be a lesson here for anyone that deals with Trump.
MyThreeCents (San Francisco)
The US news media has had its ups and downs with Sean Spicer.

First and always, it ridiculed Spicer --- the best examples being Melissa Mccarthy's several impressive skits on Saturday Night Live.

Then came a gleeful period when Spicer saw said to be close to being fired, which the White House press corps seemed to credit itself for.

That gleeful period was followed by a lengthy silence after it was reported that Spicer was likely to be promoted than fired -- a silence more eerie than any since the stock market rose sharply after Trump's election last November, abruptly ending numerous but short-lived predictions that the stock market would crash after Trump's election..

Finally, of course, came Spicer's principled resignation, which predictably led the US news media to focus less on that event than on what the US news media told us it signaled: chaos in the West Wing.

Could Spicer become the next James Comey? Go from bad to good overnight? Hard to imagine, but who knows? If it happens, remember: You heard it here first!

I would bet good money it came down to Scaramucci swearing to Trump he would, no matter what, do the fandango

Drip...drip...drip...drip...drip... This is water torture for the American people. How long must we endure this agony?
Matthew Carlson (France)
I'm getting very tired The New York Times journalists that use 'according to two people with direct knowledge of the exchange'... As I understand journalism, we site the names and the places, the: who, what, where, where, when and the why along with the how!... I understand that people are feeling like 'rats' in a cage at the White House, but we need transparency even more - not less. Trump and his cohorts will not remain indefinitely in the White House, though that is their aim. We must show open, honest and transparent RESISTANCE.
UN (Seattle, WA---USA)
Matthew---I agree but I'd rather have some view behind the curtain than none at all.
Gail Giarrusso (MA)
Since January 20, all news and communication from and about this White House, has been about the dysfunction of this president and his administration. Not one thing has been done for this country and it's people.
It's despicable.
citybumpkin (Earth)
Six months into his Presidency, and already Trump needs new toadies.
Ruben Kincaid (Brooklyn, NY)
Good for Sean Spicer - perhaps now he can buy his soul back from the Devil.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
Riven with this, bristling with that. Is this news or an editorial? GWB started an illegal war that killed 500 000. Trump will need to start WWIII to be worse.

The White House can use a more polished Press Secretary, but I fear the new Press Secretary is the same as the old Press Secretary.
Ed (Oklahoma City)
If the management chaos Trump revels in as president is indicative of the way he ran his businesses, expect him to reveal in the not-too-distant future that the U.S. is filing for bankruptcy.
Troglotia DuBoeuf (provincial America)
I thought Spicer was terrific. He was stuck as the spokesman for a vicious and unethical man who lies constantly. There's no way to thrive in that predicament. Spicer brought a modicum of genuine humanity to a White House being devoured by Grendel's father.
Jimmy (Greenville, North Carolina)
The American people must rise up and demand that Trump hand power over to Hillary & Bill.

Hillary is the only person who can save the world and end global warming.
RJC (Staten Island)
"Scaramouche" worked well in the theaters but this "new" addition to the Trump Circus will not.

Spicer at best was a sympathetic character caught up in the Trump factory of lies. Best of Luck.
Jude Ryan (Florida)
The only time I can smile when I think about this absurd presidency is when I think about what the satirists are doing to them. I cannot wait for Saturday Night Live to get its chance to portray Scaramuci in all of his glory.
Brad (Oregon)
I would be outraged to see any mainstream media company hire Spicer.
Like Trump and his enablers, he's been a liar and a bully.
David H. Eisenberg (Smithtown, NY)
I am going to withhold judgment on his presidency for a while. I look at policy and find few I like. And his personal faults make leadership and governing very difficult because he is so disliked by so many people. But, I also felt both the last two presidents, both also unqualified, did poor jobs, so its hard not to be cynical. However, despite intense opposition neither faced the wrath of the "resistance at all costs," which is not just a movement by protesters, but by the media and his political adversaries. Even his own party is not that supportive. We've had no real international crises yet or critical decisions, so we will have to wait and see how he does. At least I do. I know many people have made up their minds.
marijanj (houston)
Notwithstanding the appointment, It appears that there are still anonymous sources leaking, "according to three people with knowledge of the situation."
Will (Texas)
Spicer is dead. Long live Spicer. Who cares? He was an unfunny joke we were forced to listen to over and over again for half a year, grinding our teeth. Scaramucci is an apparently very smart and slick...hedge fund manager, a rich one, who I'm already imagining playing penny ante poker with Trump one-on-one for people's mortgages. It's hard to sell a dubious package while grating on the nerves of the audience. I'm sure this new snake oil salesman will be using pounds of sugar to make the medicine go down. It will sound nicer and some people will eat it up; while, just offstage, the listeners will not be hearing the sounds of knuckle-cracking and wailing as leakplugging commences.
kmw (Washington, DC)
It is painfully clear that Jared Kushner is running the country. I may be forgetful, but was he elected to anything?
zumaman (Mountain View, CA)
Well The Mooch will clearly add to the word salad his boss serves up fresh daily.
After all, what communications director doesn't know that "certainly" and "probably" mean the same thing: “I certainly see the American people probably see the president the way I do,” he added.

Let Clarity ring!
Ruth Peltason (New York, New York)
Does Spicer deserve our pity? Not sure there is much cause in that regard. To paraphrase McConnell, he was warned [by Trump], he was fed explanations [by Trump], and he persisted [of his own volition]. There it is, there he goes.

As for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, she's a low blow to the lectern of public discourse and her disrespect for the 4th Estate is withering. I would add that listening to her hectoring tone is also withering. But did anyone else notice that on her first official day as press secretary that she was wearing FAKE eyelashes? [Never mind that they were askew, resulting in the appearance of 2 samurai swords, in locked battle.] Hmm...maybe those FAKE eyelashes are a symbol for new fusillades of FAKERY by the 4th estate?
expat (Japan)
Why would anyone willingly serve as a human shield for this administration, when you're more likely to be killed by friendly fire than enemy fire?

What exactly are this guy's credentials, to be the communications director of a Presidential administration? Other than being clearly willing to lie and ignore facts.
tom (usa)
How many scandals did the previous two administrations have over 8 years?
This is complete chaos. Our country and our allies deserve better
Interested Reader (Orlando)
Bet Sean Spicer had his best night's sleep in a long time last night. The line that I found most laughable in this article, though, was about Jared Kushner being critical of both Spicer and Priebus for being party establishment figures who "operate out of self-interest"! Are you kidding me? The Trump clan wrote the book on that one...
Janet B (Northern WI)
"Mr. Kushner has grown increasingly critical of both Mr. Spicer and Mr. Priebus, whom he regards as party establishment figures who operate out of self-interest"

Who in this administration DOESN'T work out of self-interest?!

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of "As The World Churns".
Bruce Kanin (The Villages, FL)
"Mr. Priebus and Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s chief strategist, both strongly opposed the appointment of Mr. Scaramucci — in large part because he enjoys an easy banter and direct line to Mr. Trump...".

Oh good! More discord in the White House! Hopefully it accelerates the unraveling of the Trump "Presidency".

To paraphrase Shakespeare's Malcom, reporting on the execution of Cawdor in the tale of another storied dysfunctional administration: "Nothing so became his job like the leaving of it."

While Mr. Spicer got himself out of the circus, I am sorry that Melissa McCarthy will not have fresh material for SNL.
Jim Dickinson (Columbus, Ohio)
The clown car that is the Trump Administration stops, some old clowns get out and some new ones get in. The doors close and it rolls along once again, still as incomprehensible and ignorant as ever. The more things change the more things stay the same!
David Beck (Berlin)
A perfectly consistent move to have the Mooch taking a lead role in communicating to the underlings. As the former leading democracy is in transition to the North Korea of the Western world there will be many similar moves happening this summer. Get out of here.
doug mclaren (seattle)
Scaramucci's appointment just further emphasizes how big money New York City won the election, not rust belt Wisconsin or Bible Belt Alabama.
Lisa Margolin-feher (San Diego)
Spicer's not okay with his new boss, but was totally okay with everything the reprehensible Trump did in the first six months in office. Mind blown.
tom (pittsburgh)
I suffer from an abundance of empathy, something that is missing in the soul of most republicans, but I truly felt for Mr. Spicer every time he had to lie in the face of facts! I repeatedly asked myself what fear could make someone make a full of himself so often?
Another question was how mean must a boss be to force this behavior?
Our fake president must not have an ounce of empathy.
Paul King (USA)
The top reader pick in these comments may become the first ever to crack 10,000 recommends. As succinct and well put as any ever published.

Let's never forget, our current situation is like a bad case of food poisoning this nation is going through.

Feels fatal while you are suffering it but it passes and the joys of life and the strength of our democracy go on.

All these villains will be gone soon.

Bet on it.
Nailadi (CT)
The past six months in the Trump led White House have simply highlighted one well known fact : Thugs eventually turn on each other.

The back biting, infighting, finger pointing etc. display a few things :

1. Trump does not have the first clue about leadership
2. Those that he pretends to lead don't have an iota of respect for him

We also should expect all this to happen when a chief clown simply grabs stuff walking on the streets and puts them in charge of affairs at the Oval office.
Frau Greta (Somewhere in New Jersey)
Right. Because what we need is more Trump, not less.

Hurry up, Mr. Mueller. Hurry up.
ALALEXANDER HARRISON (nyc)
A "petit mot" on the "remaniement" within the Trump admin. Less here than the "fake media" would like to believe. Best thing that Sean Spicer had going for him was his Navy background. Always appeared to me too skittish, high strung, like a weimaraner, seldom at ease. "Il etait toujours dans ses petits souliers" say the French when referring to someone who is not right for the job, who stood up there at the podium looking like someone whose shoes were too tight. Scaramucci seems to be a good choice, although he mentioned the word "love" perhaps 1 or 2 times too many. which I found worrisome. Ms. Huckabee is the one who is always as cool as a cucumber. Her father raised her well. She is the one who emerges as one of the strongest, most listened to members of Trump's admin. Rumors of in fighting within Trump's clique are no doubt exaggerated since no one has actually been given the sack thus far.Spicer always looked as though he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and despite his protestations to the contrary, is probably glad in his heart of hearts to be off the hot seat. AS also has more enlightened views on gun control and climate change which can only please liberal , progressive voices within the admin., mainly Trump's daughter Ivanka.Average American who has to get up and go to work every day doesn't care about all this, just another subject of conversation for the media.
Mary Kimball (Kennebunkport, Maine)
There's a way to be good, again, Sean.
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
Perhaps last night Sean Spicer had a good night sleep, did not have to defend his lying boss with more lies.
He definitely earned his living for which he was hired for.
Making a spectacle himself to the public and comedians and the media.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
That Trump fellow is a nice bloke isn't he? Now Sean won't have to cast aspersions on high-integrity conservative policeman in the person of Bob Mueller. When are the Bible belt types going to support the top policeman?
Are any of them wondering if it was a very Christian thing to vote for a man who brags about sexual assault and his voyeurism at his beauty pageant where he boasted of intruding unannounced in female dressing rooms? I wonder if Jesus would have voted for Trump?
Paul Cohen (Hartford CT)
Rearranging the chairs on the Titanic. It baffles me how any outside individual would accept/replace a position in Trump's administration given the mounting pressure by RussiaGate as the news media digs relentlessly to expose new damaging details.
David (Bromley, UK)
Scaramuci does an excellent job presenting himself to the press. The difficulty is he is a total enthusiast for the President in every way.
Brendan (Mcvetty)
Aren't we all a little less spicy for this turn of events? I can feel it.
David Fairbanks (Reno Nevada)
There's an old rule, the carnival should never stay in a town past five days. One day to set up, three days of entertainment and one day to tear down and leave the county. Donald Trump already knows he's at the fourth day. My guess he wants to leave town but needs a promise that his children will not be arrested by the sheriff. The Republicans should quietly send a dignified someone and cut a deal and allow the carnival to leave. Mr. Scaramucci is not quite the fool, he knows history however twisted is being made and he will profit from this carnival.
Annie (Pittsburgh)
“I think there’s been, at times, a disconnect between the way we see the president and how much we love the president and the way some of you perhaps see the president,”

Just who is this "we" that "loves the president"? I guess living in some sort of bizarre alternate reality didn't get in the way of making gobs of money for Mr. Scaramucci, though.
Ivy grad (Washington DC)
Republican Billionaires love the President
Uneducated low skilled workers in rural areas love the President
Ex Coal Miners """
Religious Righters """
Some small business owners """ because they believe (lol) that he will "help" them

These are less than half of America. And of course there are good people in these groups who also may not love the President, or just don't understand how badly they are getting conned.
GWBear (Florida)
Sounds like Spicer was looking for any respectable reason to quit. Almost feel bad for him... almost. He had to know that he was doomed the day he hid in the bushes.

Trump despises weaknesses, even if he causes it - even if he has to Con himself into thinking he is strong, rather than the weakest, least competent, least resilient President in our history.

Funny how women have taken over the most visible roles speaking for Trump. Most visible, most difficult... and most able to provide the abject Servility to placate their perversely praise Needy boss. So disgusting that Trump's horrific neediness has just become part of the ongoing expected "Norm" We The People, and the Press, have been forced to accept. This Is The President Of The United States! How have we let such behavior become normalized?

As for the new Communications Director, he seemed to have been chosen, not for his Experience, or how he will bring Stability to the team, but rather add another competing power center to a team on the verge of collapse! Trump is Playing with People, rather than doing what should have been his Only Concern since January: serving the needs of the Nation. With all the terrible things that have gone wrong for Trump, to see him do this, to make this choice - the mental imbalance and unfitness is Terrifying!

Every Day. Every Day This Continues Is On Congress!
Jorge Uoxinton (Brooklyn)
Not surprised to read that Sean Spicer has decided to resign. He's an excellent communicator and we shall miss his daily briefs. He maintained his integrity as long as he could, but the environment became a bit toxic. Certainly we will hear from him again. A sad day for us, indeed, but good for him.
Peter Fonseca (NY)
Although Spicer's answers to important policy questions during these infamous press conferences were often muddled and occasionally contentious, in the end, he proved to be a team player whose loyalty to President Trump will surely be missed. Alternative facts such as the size of Trump's inauguration crowd and the odd assertion Trump won the popular vote are only a few of the misstatements Spicer provided to incredulous listeners. When you're aiming for the fences it's better if you have a bat in hand.
Richard Ward (Hong Kong)
If the the United States' system of governance were "a well founded and functioning constitutional democracy" it would be a parliamentary democracy in which a congressional vote of no confidence could trigger new elections in one month's time, ridding us of the Trump Reality Show and enabling new leadership that had the support of a Congressional majority to commence addressing the country's real problems.
Will Kramer (New York)
After Republicans took over Congress in 2010, were you calling for a parliamentary system so they could vote "no confidence" and kick Obama out? Didn't think so...

We need to stop being so shortsighted in the way we run our politics. Just because you don't like the current party doesn't mean it will always be that way. For example, Democrats were foolish to invoke the nuclear option to get a handful of President Obama's appointments through because this set a precedent that Republicans now use for getting Trump's appointments through without a 60 debate closure majority. We need these checks and balances, even when we don't like the outcome of the checks and balances.
Richard Ward (Hong Kong)
Will, actually, my preference for parliamentary democracy over the US system originated from first observing it in action while living in Australia during 1975 and 1976 and subsequently seeing how effective it is - when properly designed - in a) holding leaders accountable and b) quickly removing ineffective ones, in comparison to impeachment, so that a country's government can relatively quickly move forward to address its peoples' problems.
Mike B. (East Coast)
The addition of Scaramucci, and the departure of Sean Spicer, although news, is basically inconsequential when compared to the huge crisis now confronting the Trump presidency and our nation as a whole. We are now in the midst of a constitutional crisis that we haven't seen since the Watergate era of the 70's.

I'm sure that Sean Spicer regrets the day that he agreed to be the White House press secretary. He has had to go through all sorts of mental and emotional contortions when answering reporters' questions. His discomfort, however, had a redeeming quality. Scaramucci, on the other hand, seems much more casual and relaxed amidst the chaos.

We are now facing a crisis of epoch proportion. Our President can't be trusted to speak the truth. Even more troubling is the fact that we are now beginning to question his allegiance. Would he actually put Putin's interests ahead of those of the United States? Many are beginning to think so.

Clearly, Putin knows things about Trump that Trump desperately wants to keep secret, embarrassing information that could bring his presidency to an abrupt end. His tax returns will prove pivotal in this regard.

I think we can all agree that these past six months have been a whirlwind of chaos and controversy in what seems to be a never ending cycle of intrigue and disorder. And through all of this, Trump has shown a unique ability to spew a litany of lies with an uncomfortable ease.

In the end, though, I trust Muehler to right the ship.
Janet B (Northern WI)
I doubt Trump is any more truthful to the IRS than he is to the planet.
Amy (Merica)
Not "well done." After the sheer weight of lies he has upheld, I can only believe this is a survival move, not a move of integrity. Have some backbone, America. Hold people accountable for the harms they have done.
MDCooks8 (West of the Hudson)
Liberals maybe gloating on the news that Sean Spicer is leaving the Trump Administration, however liberals and democrats in any sort of political power should have more concern on recent news at the local level in a stronghold liberal state and city.

The debacle at the attempted press conference by the mayor of Minneapolis Minnesota last night concerning the firing of the city's police chief is a clear sign that the left side of the political spectrum is in more danger of surviving than the Trump Administration.

Understanding the media will down play this event but the fervor being generated from the crowd of people that hijacked the press conference was very intense and will probably erupt into a no win situation for the Democratic Party since the party really does not have a person now to resolve this anger without disrupting their more moderate base.
susan (NYc)
What does this have to do with Sean Spicer's resignation?
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Interesting that this was the issue that really got Spicer exercised enough to quit. Trump's requirement for total mendacity about healthcare or dangerous flirting with Putin did not require throwing in the towel but some some slavering hedge fund guy getting hired was the end of the road. Not exactly the heroic rejection of the swamp- more like personal pique or job jealousy issues.
human being (USA)
Trump is utterly gratuitously cruel: in a fit of pique, he did not have Sean Spicer, a Catholic, included in the audience with the pope--which Spicer said would have beena high point of his life.

Spicer certainly has his weaknesses but no one deserves to be a whipping boy for an erratic, vindictive boss. Trump's treatment of Spicer says much more about Trump as a person than about Spicer's performance.
Bettes (North Carolina)
We can only hope that Mr. Scaramucci's ability to see the facts accurately and states them accurately.

Truth and accuracy will be in great contrast to the 'alternative facts' offered during recent months by other White House advisors.
Jennifer MacDonald (Boulder, CO)
I will sorely miss Melissa McCarthy's Spicey impersonation, it seemed reason enough to keep him around.
wjth (Norfolk)
Mr S, seemingly a long-term confidant of the Trump Family, needs to take a pause and ask himself what is the optimum communication relationships he can engineer between The Administration and The Electorate to achieve The Administrations goals.

Firstly, he has to stop the incessant leaking and here some quick firings of leakers, however senior, would be salutary. Secondly, he should ban The Press from the White House. Thirdly, he should state that only communications coming from either The President or his own Communication's Office have any validity. Lastly, along with the personal lawyers to The President he needs to establish some control over The President's natural exuberance "To Communicate". The recent interview with the NYT should never have taken place and The President would be well advised to take the summer off with only a very few public appearances.

There is a saying that…"he who governs least governs best"…and the same can be said with respect to Presidential Communications. The President should become an admirer of "Silent Cal."
Janet B (Northern WI)
All the noise is fog to hide the behind-the-scenes travesty. Trump's purpose in ascending the presidential throne is accumulation of power and even more wealth. People outside his family exist only to further that purpose. People who do not simply do not exist and there's no need to consider them
Ivy grad (Washington DC)
And while you are at it, how about established a "Presidential Office of Truth", run by Scaramucci, which would be the only official truth anywhere. That way, when the fake news says something obviously incorrect about the President, people will know where to find the facts!
Lin (Vermont)
"Firstly" We need the leakers to get some truth out of this joint.
"Secondly" Support freedom of the press. We have the right to know what's going on in that joint.
"Thirdly" see "Firstly""
I agree with your last point, Trump's tweeting needs to be severely controlled.
George (NC)
What a soap opera, made all the worse by the low-grade nature of its actors. How did we sink so low?
Katherine Spring (Atlanta, GA)
I would like to think that Spicer's "resignation" was voluntary and was the result of a late-developing sense of self-respect, dignity, patriotism, and principle. Alas, I do not believe that. The man sacrificed his ethics and his professional reputation to the service of a dangerously unbalanced, corrupt, vindictive, lying egomaniac. Every day that he remained in the White House Spicer knew that all that was good and admirable about America was being systematically (OK, erratically and impulsively) dismantled and destroyed to support the President's unrelenting march toward authoritarian rule.

If Spicer was going to resign, it would have been after Trump's mean-spirited refusal to allow him, a devout Catholic, an audience with the Pope. If he didn't walk then, he isn't walking now.

No, Spicer didn't resign. He was forced out.

Maybe, with years of pastoral and other counseling, Spicer can rediscover the values and self-respect he once had. After all, although it feels like years, it has only been seven months.
athenasowl (phoenix)
I refuse to jump on the bandwagon and praise Spicer's decision. He has lied from day 1. Remember the millions and millions of people at the inauguration? He has no integrity and no dignity left.

Sanders is likewise lying. Scaramucci has already started to spin and it won't be long before he starts lying. What frosts me is that they seem to think that everyone can be taken in by their lies. This administration is just plain disgusting.
beberg (Seattle, WA)
What will it take to get. them. out? Trump is clearly unqualified and unfit to serve as president. I think it is way, way past time to tell HIM, "You're fired!"
sdw (Cleveland)
Things are deteriorating quickly in the Trump White House in cadence with Donald Trump’s descent into the madness of a caged animal who now sees no escape. It is going to get much worse in the coming weeks, and Sean Spicer’s tenure as press secretary will soon be remembered fondly as the good old days.

Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but let’s give Spicey some credit for taking a stand and leaving the podium.
dbb (usa)
Take some time during retirement to read up on history and facts, two things which should have been a requirement in this job.
David (Mirboo North-Australia)
This new arrangement isnt going to work. How can anything consistently work with a megalomaniac running the show?
It must have been extraordinarily frustrating for Spicer. Day after day he had to be Trump's voice and he surely repeatedly must have thought to himself, ' I cannot believe the things I am having to say to the MSM'. Eventually it would corrode any half decent man's soul.
Mowgli16 (Asheville, NC)
So can we expect a Spicey tell-all book in the near future? Federal employees don't sign NDA's, do they? I know that's standard practice for Trump employees.
Chris Bowling (Blackburn, Mo.)
I will miss the Melissa McCarthy portrayal of Spicer, although one could see McCarthy-Spicer in various other public relations roles -- such as a amusement park guide: "Welcome to Disneyland, kids. No questions." So now it's Scara-"Mooch"'s turn to do the fandango. Yet another high-rent grifter added to an administration awash in them.
Lee (Chicago)
When Sean Spicer signed on to be the press secretary, he already lost his credibility. I cannot imagine that he had no idea what kind of man Trump is. The Whitehouse is a mess, full of yea-sayers, it will self-destruct.
Stephen (Austin, TX)
I never appreciated his willingness to lie on the behalf of the pathological liar he represented. However, I'm sure he will feel a great weight off his shoulders not having to continually stand at a podium lying through your teeth day after day. He will always be remembered, thanks to Melissa McCarthy, as someone I learned to laugh at despite his lack of integrity. Hopefully he has a mighty powerful shower head.
James Lang (Vancouver, Canada)
The difference between Sean and Sarah is this: Sean sold out and he knew it. Perhaps he is now repentant. Ms. Sanders actually believes all the lies that come out of her mouth.
Connie (Seattle)
Good for Spicer. Walk proudly away with what dignity you still have. Representing a 70 year old loud mouth for six mounts was more than I could take and I hope you have a bright future. Worst boss ever.
Pinky (Salisbury Ma)
i'm looking forward to the book he will inevitably write, telling the truth for once and for all.
Prof. Jai Prakash Sharma (Jaipur, India)
Even with Sean Spicer deciding to quit the Trump team midway and the induction of Anthony Scaramucci, the hedge fund manager, it's difficult to believe that Trump's troubles are over. For, the pattern of musical chair game or the frequency with which the Trump administration is changing its face as a daily routine and which has emerged as a pattern of Trump style of functioning is not only ridiculous and worrisome but raises the spectacle of serious deadlock in governance, which is a sure recipe for chaos and confusion in the country. It's unfortunate that a well founded and functioning constitutional democracy is being subjected to undue strains and being changed into an irresponsible family rule under a maverick.
DC (Ct)
Scaramucci is not a hedge fund manager,he was a useless middleman in a financial transaction that represented a second level of fees for performing no services in return. He was a scammer,he will fit in well in this circus.
MC (Indiana)
And you guys were saying Trump doesn't make enough staffing appointments. It just looks that way because he's filling the same posts over and over again.
fdawei (Beijing, China)
As long as Ivanka says it's OK, her father will confirm the appointment !!! What is her role in this? Who is she to pass judgment? This entire family is totally bizarre and dysfunctional. How long with Priebus last? Who is the next to go?
Max (San Francisco, CA)
I love this new trend of "I'll be good at the job because I'm a successful businessman." Behind every fortune is a huge crime - so show us all your tax returns, internal memos, emails, phone transcripts and contracts so we can judge just what kind of a "businessman" you really are, sir. Or shut up and sit down.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Trump is shockingly old style- we are down to the nub here with just raw loyalists who can't even pretend to know what their gov job entails - non-experienced family members are our national HR department apparently. I guess this is the "I know all the best people" part. Seems just as incestuous and weird as it actually is.
S B (Ventura)
Trump has to have people around him that will cater to his fragile and delusional ego - When your approval rating is so low, and so many people dislike you, I guess that's the only way to keep the delusion and false realities intact. It's actually really pathetic.

This new guy seems really eager to massage trumps fragile ego, so maybe he'll last a bit.
Ron Epstein (NYC)
I despise Spicer but I too hope he makes a lot of money. He can make it by writing a tell all book about the Trump administration that will give us the inside information needed for impeachment.
SA (NYC)
I was wondering the same thing, if Spicer will do a tell-tale, or at least a tell-some. I'm sure he's got some financial and contractual disincentives not to do so, but we shall see.
Frau Greta (Somewhere in New Jersey)
It's interesting how Sean Spicer, as annoying as he could be at times, never gave me the impression that he was corrupt like the rest of that lot. Looking back now, and comparing him with Scaramucci who is the devil in disguise, he seems almost angelic.
Mary Beth (Mass)
I don't think he will, just yet anyway. So long as the Republican Party is all in with Trump, he won't want to burn any bridges to his next job.
Phillip Vasels (New York)
Anthony Scaramucci, a side show of a side show.
Amie Diegwu (Edmonton)
Ouch Phil...just ouch
Ellen Valle (Finland)
"Just look at his great television ratings."
That says it all, doesn't it.
lhbari (Williamsburg, VA)
That and was it Scaramucci who said he hope Spice makes a lot of money? TV ratings and reams of money are what matter most in this administration. Sad.
John (34652)
Exactly. Just wow.
Mike (NJ)
Fate has finally smiled upon Sean Spicer. He is no longer subject to the whims of an autocrat who changes his story and excuses daily.
