Their dining set is gorgeous simplicity - wish that was identified. Such a lovely space in the middle of a busy city.

Why do photographers shoot photos of small decorative items when the piece is about the house/apartment itself? I don't care to have the limited photos in the slide show depict a wood carving or a painting when the article is about the real estate. I feel cheated when the photos take up to one-half of the slide show with these type of photos.

Paula I was thinking a similar opinion! Why didn't they show the wrap around terrace and renovated fireplace!

I would say that, though these columns run in the real estate section, they are called "What I Love" for a reason. That title encompasses not just the configuration of the space, but the personal manifestations that make it a home--souvenirs, memories, collections--for the person who lives there. So I'm more than happy to look at objects, framed letters, plants, pets .... all those intimate things. There are plenty of other places in the Times to read about real estate's more technical aspects.

The fireplace was shown in photo #3 and Ms. Ahrens is sitting on the terrace in the last photo.

Lovely to read about a successful New York artist comfortable and satisfied with where she lives. Just makes my day off better.

Lovely article! Yes, how well I can identify, my books, piano, plants and kitchen. A happy home.

Thank you! This article reflects what I loved about NYC for the 30 years I lived there. People who are accomplished and have style.

This was a very interesting article and Ms. Ahrens and Mr. Costa have a lovely apartment. But I kept looking at the name "Lynn Ahrens" and thinking "Why do I know that name? Why? Why?"

Why? Because she wrote several songs for Schoolhouse Rock!

Though she has obviously gone on to a distinguished career in the theater, I hope she and her collaborators - especially Bob Dorough - know how many people they influenced with those little video/songs between cartoons during the 1970s. I actually never heard of Schoolhouse Rock until the '90s when it was played for us in history classes in school. Now all the Schoolhouse Rock! cartoons are on DVD compilations (I received one as a gift from Amazon many years ago; the compilations apparently still sell well there) and on YouTube.

If you look at the individual songs posted on YouTube now you see all these comments from kids today - most of them saying, "My teacher showed us this in class" or something similar. Ms. Ahrens wrote and/or sang several Schoolhouse Rock songs, but I suspect one of the most popular is "The Preamble", about the U.S Constitution. Enjoy your great apartment (with walls) - and please know how many people still enjoy your songs.

Would love to know the artist(s) of the two paintings to the right of Ms. Ahrens in the photo of her seated on the coffee table.

When I first moved to NYC in 1985, I had the privilege of singing in a reading of Ahrens & Flaherty's "Lucky Stiff", and we rehearsed in their NoHo loft. Fresh from the Midwest, it was first introduction to a real NYC loft (gosh!), and I remember being fascinated by the white skim-coated walls; like glass. I had never seen anything like them before, and that loft has occupied the dictionary-definition-of-loft in my mind ever since.
I recall running into her just after their midtown relocation, when she still seemed as surprised to be there as I was to find her living there. How lovely to have made such a wonderful transition in both location *and* style!
Thanks for the lovely article about one of the nicest people you'd ever meet in showbiz :-)

What a delightful article. It is so nice to read how someone put their life together so well and loves it.
