Yoga With Cats

One afternoon I decided to stretch out on a mat in our big shaggy back yard and take in a little sun. I was startled when our siamese cat carefully stepped onto my back and then just sat there. He didn't lie down, but sat bolt upright in the vicinity of my waist. I couldn't decide if he was declaring ownership, guarding me, or just hanging out. I had some difficulty in dislodging him when I'd had enough heat and wanted to go back inside.

He was a tactile sort of kitty, always ready for an available lap, fine with wearing my sunglasses or a paper hat, and quite comfortable in a T shirt I made for him from the sleeve of one of mine.

He liked to be talked to, but pretended not to know English. Then he would do something that made it clear he'd understood exactly what you'd said, and if you'd wanted him to do something he just leisurely did it. Guests and cat sitters were amazed, and one said he was the most evolved cat she'd ever met.

It's been 20 years since he died, when he was 17. I think of him every day.

If you've never seen video of yoga with goats, I encourage you to Google it. They have it in VT.
I'm a yogi, a yoga teacher & a cat lover. Give me a cat over a cloven-hooved animal jumping on my back while I'm in child's pose any day of the week.

Earlier this week the Times had an article about rats as pets, and also one about raising pigeons; SO inspiring.
I'm thinking Ashtanga with rodents ( maybe pizza could be served?)
Then there's also Kundalini with birds, in a cafe that serves seeded bagels.
Personally, I relax during Bikram With Pugs. Their panting keeps me in the moment, and there's nothing like a warm dog on your head to help you let go of tight muscles.

Okay, people, get a grip. I am the number one cat person and I LOVE yoga. BUT yoga and cats do not go together. I tried it and the cats are darling but just get in the way. The place where I indulged in this craziness actually had the participants chant "meow-ommmm", puh-lease!

for starters, this pic is a Pilates exercise called double leg kick

It's a yoga posture. A variation of locust. And yoga came first. Mr. Pilates wasn't around until the 1920's. So please. It's yoga.

This is hardly news to me. I practice yoga and other exercises on the floor at home. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. They surround me and sometimes take my space on the mat if I stand. In the morning I sit in the hallway throwing a ball for my dogs to chase and have fun. Meanwhile I'm doing seated stretches. One cat lurks 2 feet away.

I think most pets like it when you get down to there lever. Next article should be cats on your laptop or keyboard. In our house we have a condition called
"cat lap" which calls for either my husband or me to get a second cup of coffee for the person "cat lapped".

Hilarious! I was reading this article with my sweet Lady "itty bitty" Bean kitty on my lap and made my boyfriend refill my coffee because I was pre-disposed as a cat pillow
Patricia (<br/>)
there lever? Spell check, anyone?
Kris (Aaron)
My husband and I refer to having a cat on our laps as being "encatted". Whoever is without a feline companion at that particular moment retrieves whatever the encatted individual requires.

I don't trust people who don't like cats.

To those criticizing this article, the reason for these facilities is to place animals in their forever homes. There are so many unwanted animals. People are ignorant and do not spay and neuter their cats and dogs because kittens and puppies are so cute then they abandon them sometimes in terribly cruel ways. Another issue is in my area many apartments do not allow pets. These places allow people to get their animal "fix".

thank you!!! as a Yoga teacher & cat lover, shelter volunteer & cat rescuer, THIS reason alone is worth having a yoga cat class space - some people are too sad or not willing to go to a shelter to interact with the dogs & cats (& rabbits) but This is SUCH a great way to allow people AND cats to have a communal (& spiritual) place to connect & those wanting to adopt have the opportunity to form a relationship & bond with the cat(s) they would adopt. plus the weight of a warm cat body & the vibrating purr-ing is a PURR-fect way to let go of tension,& stay in the (blissful) moment namaste!

I've always wished that there was a cat hotel. So when I travel and find it hard to sleep without my cats lying on my legs, I can borrow a friendly cat.

I often search for Airbnbs and guest houses with cats for this reason.

I thought everyone knew that the first yogini were taught by cats.

What's next? Yoga with dogs-done. Yoga with goats-yup. What is up with this, now cats? No. No. and No. I really hate cats. Sorry all of you cat lovers.
Zeliasgrand (Bay City, MI)
Don't like cats? Don't go to the classes that feature cats, or the cafes that feature them, or the animal shelter, etc.
I'm always curious about people who don't like cats. Dogs are slavishly devoted to their owners and I think that is why people like them. Cats cannot be dominated and that, I think is why some people dislike them. True for you, Cod, or is there something else that motivates your hatred?
Charlie (Mallorca)
"Can I have some cats with that?" Sorry, I just don't get it.
Sarah (Brooklyn)
Yoga with cats is the reason I don't do yoga to a video at home! My cats get in the way and demand attention!

Yoga with cats. I wonder if Iyengar or Bikram would approve or even capitalize on such a mindful approach to stretching. it would be interesting to observe the cats in a Bikram class at around 100 degrees and see if they last as long or longer than the usual participants.
Yoga while the cat uses the litter box did she say? There's a mindful challenge.
Probably wise to have your epipen available in the event Felix ends up on your belly during shivasana.

Are you kidding? This is a parody of bi-species inbreeding, right? I'm a cat owner and a yoga practitioner, but I can't see how this piece merits coverage in the Times, even as human interest or cat interest or whatever odd interest it might hold for a minuscule "cult" of Manhattanites. Your readers do need lightness as well as gravitas in these portentous times, but triviality wastes your time and ours.
CM (NYC)
Eric - the byline was true to the article. Clearly it was going to be a "fluff" piece. No one forced you to read the article. Don't complain about something you chose to read.
Eric Sundquist (MA)
Fair enough. In my defense, my cats made me read the article because they are having this heated argument. The longhair prefers Hatha while the shorthair is into Vinyasa. I am caught in the middle. They are both from feral families (hence the disparagement of Manhattanites), and sometimes the easiest way out for me is to make a comment that they both agree is unfair.

Our last cat died a month ago, and we have to wait until next spring until we can get new kittens due to a long trip we have planned in winter.
I always loved lying down with my cats. The only problem I see is that my cats could decide at any time that they want the entire bed/chair/couch/mat for themselves.
donspock (astoria,ny)
I can relate,I lost my darling Maine Coon to sudden death in April,I will alo wait a few months for the same reson you stated, but I will get another cat. Life without one is just not as PURRFECT .
Becky (SF, CA)
Maybe the kitties in the class would pay more attention to my form than most of my yoga teachers. Cool.
Richard (Cleveland, OH)
As someone with terrible cat allergies, it's hard to even look at the pictures on this story
Ed (Old Field, NY)
It might be instructive for bidalasana.
Val in NYC (Manhattan)
Cats are so relaxing. I wish we had kitty yoga in midtown. But I'm very happy for those who get to have a cat fix downtown. What a great idea!
