A New Look at the Top of Women’s Tennis: It’s Wide Open

Tournaments should seed based on previous two or three tournaments results. That might create dominance. Rankings go back too far. Women have two in the top ten who are not even playing. And then Sharapova is playing well but must rely on wildcards.

I'm totally with Lucic-Baroni. What wisdom borne of years! Hope she makes a deep run at Roland Garros!

I think it's the perfect time for Kiki Bertens to break through. She was a semi-finalist at last year's Roland Garros, and this year, has reached the quarterfinal and semi-final rounds of Madrid and Rome, respectively. She should have no fear factor of anyone she may face in this year's RG field.

I'd also back Anett Kontaveit to make a semi-final appearance.

What has happened to the U.S Women's tennis program? It seems to me that Serena and Venus have dominated the scene for twenty years. Where are the challengers?

There are 5 non-Williams Americans in the top 50

Good opportunity for Venus, if her health holds.

We have to acknowledged that tennis sport is becoming more and more chosen from people who is seeking this sport as a way to solve their life problems.
So money concern is the priority.
Once a player is the in first part of the ranking does not like to push to make the final step. Which is way we have this kind of situation.
A changing could help a reshaping of this sport. Mr Agassi provided piece of advice. The leader should discuss them openly.

I don't care who wins on the womens' side. I'm just thankful Sharapova will not be there. Though it would be cool if Venus won.

With Venus still winning and Serena not even having to play regularly to dominate, women's tennis is being exposed as a playground for the two most talented female athletes in memory. Ever since these two burst on the scene twenty years ago, they have been the standard by which all have and will be judged.

And don't shed a tear for Maria for not getting a pass into the French Open. She took performance enhancing drugs for ten years and is lucky she's not banned for life. Her famous "gut checks" turned out to be chemically fueled.

Serena may be a magnificent player, perhaps the greatest of all time, but her physique isn't that of a woman: look at her! She could play linebacker in the NFL, sporting a six-pack that few men w/out steroid assistance could match. And her arms? Jeesh, few men can get that definition legally, too. Or those mammoth thighs, the source of her great power.
Watching Serena is to behold an unfair contest, similar to what a match between similarly rated men and women would be like: a blowout. How often have we seen Serena give top-rated opponents gifts of sets and then easily shift to another gear and demolish them? She simply is head and shoulders above the competition because of her superior strength.
I, for one, am happy to see her leave the stage. She, by all accounts, is a wonderful person, but it just hasn't been entertaining to watch her play.

Her physique isn't that of a woman? That's rather an asinine comment, as she is quite buxom and callipygian. She may be more muscular than you prefer in a woman, but that's your problem.

What an ugly slew of slurs. She has earned her superior strength cleanly and legitimately, through hard work. Yes, women can be and look strong, and still be women. You have no proof of any steroid assistance or cheating by Serena, unlike what Sharapova admittedly did. So just shut up, suck it up and admit she's the best of all time and did it legally.

@JSDV.
You may not remember Secretariat. It was always a thrill and a privilege to watch him destroy the competition, "head and shoulders above" the field. I never longed for his retirement, so the lesser specimens could once again have a chance at winning with slower times. While competitive matches amongst lessers may please some fans, I would rather watch the best.
