New York Today: Past Presidential Visits

Make no mistake about it. Donald Trump doesn't dare spend any more time here than necessary here, because there's little to no chance of him encountering the adoring masses he prefers to surround him with --- Instead he'd be hit with a real New York welcome of protests, demonstrations, and unfriendly natives.
So no, Mr. Trump. You can't go home again.

I'm sure that the good citizens of New York are just thrilled to death that Donald Trump will be paying their fair city a visit. What an honor and a privilege. The pollution is regrettable. My commiserations.
Steve (New York)
I'm a bit confused by that "homecoming" to NYC list of presidents.
Only the two Roosevelts (Trump and TR are the only NYC born presidents) and Chester Arthur (the only president besides Washington to take the presidential oath in NYC) ever lived here before being president.
Van Buren was from the Columbia County and Cleveland and Fillmore from Buffalo. Fillmore's only connection to the city is that his name is engraved over the entrance of the armory in Central Park which dates to his time as comptroller of the state.
How can you come home to a place where you never lived?
Barry (New York area)
I dreaded the final year or so of Clinton administration with weekly hob-nobs at the Waldorf and nearby as he transitioned to post White House. Midtown NY is not equipped for Presidential visits and Trump is doing everyone a favor but limiting time in midtown.

All of Trump's public appearances to-date have either been duties of the office, like SOTU, or in front of friendly audiences in places like South Carolina and rural Pennsylvania.

I have a feeling he's going to get a very lucid appreciation for the depth of his unpopularity during this trip.

Trump should receive all the courtesy and respect that foreign heads of state receive. They are visitors. We do not show contempt simply because leaders like himself do not share our beliefs.
Perfect Gentleman (New York)
Billy, you're right, of course. Trump is a foreign head of state. The America he rules is not the one that New Yorkers and the majority of Americans live in. If you recall, leaders like Castro and Arafat were not exactly welcomed with open arms, and it would be hard to imagine Assad or Kim being warmly greeted. In any event, Trump has at least one part-time residence in New York, so we have no choice. As Robert Frost wrote, "Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in."
Steve (New York)
Yeah, I guess he's owed the same level of respect as Giuliani showed for several foreign leaders he didn't like when he was mayor.
Doremus Jessup (On the move)
Those that deserve courtesy and respect are those that have earned said courtesy and respect. Donald Trump has earned neither and deserves none. Donald Trump is an insult to the Office of the President of the United States. The only this man deserves is contempt.

Since the Tony nominations are actually "In the News," is it OK to sneak in a YouTube reprise of this Bette Midler Dolly parody-tribute that my neighbor and I did -
"Put On Your Tony Gown" - tune of Put On Your Sunday Clothes

If so, thanks,

Some forced happy music –
A “Theme from New York New York” for the Donald’s visit

Keep checking the news
He’s coming our way
First visit from the President
Who’s from New York

Get good walking shoes
Expect some delay
And in midtown, be hesitant
To tour New York

He’s gonna shake up
This great city where cars will creep
You’ll find if you take a cab,
Prices are steep

If chaos ensues
Well, we’ll have to pay
To guard that long time resident
Who’s from New York

Aaaaand - Our city’s in a state
‘Cause he’s the candidate
We didn’t choose
Who’s from New York
New York

I couldn't wait to scroll down to see what you'd make of this visit, Freddie -- and as usual, a Masterpiece!!.....You made my day. Thanks!
Freddie (New York NY)
N. Smith, thanks so much for that! I've gotten two emails from writer friends pointing out that President doesn't really rhyme with hesitant, so your post makes me feel better about that.
