Just when the waters are clean enough to use for people - boating, swimming, kayaking - the ferry companies take over to fuel real estate development on the shores. It's the never ending story of NYC!

"Urban Journey ", "Lunch Box", etc. -- Let's have a round of applause for those second-graders who came up with such great names for the new ferries ... Ahoy!!!

When it comes to the scaffolding article. How is it that the cities Housing Development and Planning (HPD) doesn't track developer to year of building, to scaffolding, to construction defect. Just look all over the boroughs and you will see scaffolding around fairly new coops/condos, and many HPD buildings.

Overall I thought the service was great!! So glad we have a permanent waterway option for our commute. Compared to taking the ferry when the R train tunnel was out of service, it did seem that the Captains needed a little more practice on maneuvering the ferry to the docks. At one point, on the way up the East River, the Captain went into the wrong slip. Secondly, during rush hour the 5:30p Rockaway ferry was full to capacity and the next one was an hour away. Maybe every half hour during the height of travel would be appropriate. I think it's safe to say that this is all part of the growing pains that the NYC Ferry was bound to have on its first day.

No more commuting updates for the subway? Please bring back!

I was talking to someone from Staten Island about the debate in this comments section some time back over the need for more charging stations on the S.I. Ferry. He said that the outlets have been replaced with stations that allow multiple people to charge their phones and other devices.

The commute from S.I. is a long one, people need to stay connected. The number of sanctimonious readers who didn't understand that was astonishing.

You only need to be connected if it's an emergency. Just put away those insidiious, distractive phones and enjoy the ride and view. It's a chance to relax, breathe, get set for the day. You'll be talking to people once you get there. Ease up; you'll be healthier and happier.

People could, of course, charge their cell phones at home. That's what responsible people do.

Installing dozens of outlet is just an added expense. Plus, the more outlets there are, whether on planes or ferries, the more chance of some electrical mishap. Finally, it just reinforces people's laziness.

The number of people who believe that the city should pick up after them, so to speak, is astonishing.

A person who needs to stay connected constantly should carry a battery pack, just the way you would carry an umbrella in case it rains, bring your water bottle if you are going to get some aerobic exercise, or fill your gas tank if you are taking a car trip. They're fairly inexpensive and a good one can charge your phone several times before you need to recharge it.

It's great to have another commuting option but Pier 11 was very chaotic yesterday. It was not clear which line was for what ferry and the bull horn guy was not directing people and keeping line lines organized. It seemed like the Pier was unprepared for the volume of new riders. I hope who ever is in charge of Pier 11 sorts this out soon.

Sometimes you’ve just got to go with the obvious ferry tribute song!

Tune of Ferry Cross the Mersey

I travel day after day
I give the service an A
The Ferry, Urban Journey
Gets high marks and a salute
On our commute

Riders sit back and all smile
As they near Governors Isle
The Ferry, Urban Journey
Their faith in the Mayor restored
So all aboard

No need to fight for the outlets
Plenty for everyone’s use
Nice upper deck and an upscale café
There’s even kale in the juice

So I’ll continue to ride
With that great N-Y-C pride
The Ferry, Urban Journey
Was a smash on its premiere
So glad it’s here!
