Bill O’Reilly Is Forced Out at Fox News

In the late 80s, when I was in my teens, a famous columnist by the name of Bob Greene, invited me to his office, after hours. From there, he served me alcohol and basically took me on dates that were largely chaste and until he took me to a hotel room and tried to get me into bed. About 15 years later, another teenaged girl turned him in and he was fired. It turned out that despite being married with children, Greene had a pattern of wooing and seducing teenaged and women in their early 20s by suggesting he could get them journalism work. The point to this story is that where there is smoke, there is fire. Lots of young women were used and abused by this pattern and even though everyone at the newspapers where he worked knew about his behavior, nothing ever happened until someone decided to go public. Yes, that teenaged girl went after his money. But he lost his career instead, and also the respect of his family and the public. To those saying that O'Reilly didn't necessarily "do" anything- he obviously did. Why else would he go quietly? Why else would he pay out millions of dollars in hush money? America needs to wake up and stop giving the benefit of the doubt to rich, powerful men.
SM (NYC)
I'm glad I can still comment. Here's what I'd love to read from the NYT going forward.

An investigative story on expensive lawsuit settlements with gag orders on both parties, where the defendant doesn't admit guilt. I want to hear from plaintiffs, defendants, lawyers. Push the boundaries on journalism ethics and the law WITHOUT breaking them. But get to the truth of these things.

These types of settlements are a huge component, and they are abysmal black holes where people's prejudices, politics, and cynicism are able to flourish and strengthen.

There must be SOME way to write such a story.
Graciela Narvaja Jones (Asuncion, Paraguay)
I love it!
Jere lLucey (Manhattan)
What a role model! As a Catholic, I hope the Pope got photo bombed by this sleeze.

As an employer, Fox could have lead, but they chose to follow, and calculate a bargain. Trusted?
Karen (St louis)
So sick of these old men with their "locker room talk" and boys talk nonsense. Just another excuse to put down women. There is no woman on the planet that hasn't had to tolerate this crap to one degree to another in the in interest of being a "good sport". To often, however, that tolerance just opens the door to these men pushing it a little further and further until it becomes intolerable or abusive.
D.A. (Baton Rouge)
Newt Gingrich led the charge against BIll Clinton's adultery while he was cheating on his own wife.

BIll O'Reilly in his self-righteousness held nothing back when he slandered an entire race by saying violence in the black community are as a result of broken homes while going through nasty divorce proceedings of his own.

Dennis Hastert was molesting young men while leading the crazed infatuation with BIll Clinton's private life. e.t.c.

There is a pattern here, conservative men put forth a clean, christian, family friendly image on TV, but are anything but in private. There is a parable about self righteousness being like a filthy rag in the bible. These dudes never read that part. Heck, they've probably never read the bible they thump around.
RB (Madison)
Where can I find that "parable"?
SSJ (Roschester, NY)
Emily Steel of the New York Times is a true American hero. Take a bow and thank you.
Jubilee133 (Prattsville, NY)
O'Reilly should have stayed.

The "charges" against him were nothing short of Leftists aiming at the only conservative news outlet, and taking down a symbol.

One Poster here asked why O'Reilly "was not serving time?"

Good question.

I suppose a partial answer to that is found in how Al Sharpton got a "peace medal" from Obama, without having to serve a day in prison for income tax evasion, and as an accomplice to various crimes from the Tawana Brawley hoax, to Freddy's fire in Harlem.

Some provocateurs from the Right and the Left are simply untouchable.

I won't be buying anything from the advertisers who left Fox, nor will I be watching Fox for a while since it sold out to progressive haters who used "feminism" in the same manner as the NYT recently used "anti-Semitism";

As a club to beat Trump over the head.

The culture war has real consequences in jobs lost. O'Reilly is just one more.
mjjt (long island)
Maybe he'll run for president next! What a horrible thought, but after trump anythings possible
withfeathers (Fort Bragg, CA)
Good luck to Ivanka explaining to the President why he shouldn't make O'Reilly ambassador to the Vatican.
nzierler (New Hartford)
What a country! Bill O'Reilly gets the mother of golden parachutes for being a sexual predator. Rupert Murdoch's only concern is recapturing sponsorships for the 8:00 time slot. He was not the least bit fazed by his employee's repulsive behavior because his employee was a mega cash cow for his "fair and balanced" network. The biggest losers are the unfortunate women who work for Fox who live in a culture of misogyny.
Madigan (Brooklyn, NY)
O'Reilly is now history. Stop printing his name on MY New York Times Front Page. How About Ben Carson's name: Where is he, & what is he doing? Or, "Why & how a young 27-year old, football player ended up committing suicide" by his close friends?
David (Monticello)
"I'm sure HE won't be missed"
Jeanne Harris (Missouri)
You made a big mistake forcing Bill out. He was great on the Factor. What are you? A church? He isn't a priest. Put him back on. He wasn't boring. We all loved his program and looked forward to it. Tell those women snowflakes to grow up.
QOTM (CA)
He got fired because he cost Fox millions of dollars because Bill is a serial sexual predator. I'm sure he will land somewhere else, so your entertainment gap should be temporary. In the meantime, maybe you can use the spare time to explain to your sisters, daughters, and female friends how you support Bill's right to make women's employment contingent on sleeping with him, and his right to make disgusting remarks about their bodies while they are working.
pjc (Cleveland)
Bill O'Reilly can go back to his day job of being the muttering angry man sitting at the end of my corner pub, who is always upset about something and is always on the prowl for an opportunity to say something racially, sexually, or ethnically disgusting.
Irene (Vermont)
He finally got old and unattractive enough to be booted out. Good riddance.
erb (Seattle)
Given his additional $25 million dollar parting gift ... I guess he figured out how to monetize sexual assault. How is this guy not serving jail time? (... along with Trump)
HenryK (DC)
I find telling that Fox reacted only once advertisers pulling out, not when these women came forward.

Tells you something about values in the Murdoch world.
Kevin (Des Moines)
To everyone defending O'Reilly, would you feel that same way if he was the principal at your children's school? What if it was you or a relative being harassed and denied a job unless you "put out"?
Peggy Jo (St Louis)
In this one pay-off, Fox had rewarded O'Reilly for his actions over decades. Shame on them.

The real question is if they are actually doing anything real to change their culture and prevent this from ever happening again. I'm not holding my breath.
E. L. (Crystal Lake, IL)
Apparently it pays well to sexually harass women at Fox News. $25 million for O'Reilly, $40 million for Ailes, and the company even paid for the accusing women, $13 million & 20 million (I understood it was Ailes being sued, not Fox News) respectively.

O'Reilly's and the Fox News' popular viewership befuddles, disappoints, and disheartens. It is perhaps a living proof of abject failure in the US public and, for that matter, private education. Who knows! Such behavior may land them to the US Presidency someday.
Carl (Atlanta)
I agree, failure of education system, but also failure of adults to be curious, skeptical, or to self-educate, pretty bad,
gone fishing (Dublin, Ireland)
The Murdochs don't care about advertising losses or offending women - they couldn't afford to let O'Reilly get in the way of their complete takeover of Sky News in the UK. They are under scrutiny by the British regulator right now and, with a decision due shortly, this scandal shows complete lack of governance at Fox for years. Hopefully, the British regulator will refuse their bid.
Randall Johnson (Seattle)
Trump said it was a mistake for O'Reilly to have paid $13M to his victims of sexual harassment.

Guess, Trump knows of what he speaks.
falcon1 (south of the mason-dixon)
Trump knows that "when you're a star" you get away with it. After all, he has. And that was repeated physical assault by his own admission. So he can't see why another (though lesser) star should be held accountable even with the golden parachute.
Margo Price (<br/>)
He started out here in Portland Oregon years ago. He had a reputation as a misogynistic jerk back then, though a decidedly liberal one. Hmmm was his conservative stance assumed to gain notoriety and money?
All I am saying (Where's the Carl)
Interestingly one of Bill O'Reilly's crusades has been smearing and making the Democratic inhabitant of the White House look bad by proxy.

The invitation of black rapper Common to the White House was advertised by O'Reilly to signify Obama advocated cop killing by dog whistling a thumbs up, only because Common had once offered a woman in prison, convicted for killing a cop, some comfort and compassion in her dire straits because he was convinced of her innocence and did not think she'd done anything wrong.

So we may now hear Bill O'Reilly officially warn America for Donald Trump, since Trump has said of a man who has felt so impressively innocent, that he saw no other way than to settle 5 harassment cases for no less than 13 million dollars:

“I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person, ( ) I don’t think Bill did anything wrong.”

Or we may not, as rumor has it that he is not content with his lasting legacy as the author of a book on civil children behavior "Give Please a Chance," (as in "May I slap you with my falafel, please?" or "May I violently pull you by your hair down the stairs, please?" or "May I operate like a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult leader, steeped in the self-evident male privileges of intimidation, indecency and misogyny, please?"), but is currently looking for a network interested to broadcast the talk show concept he has vowed to double down on:

"Give Sleaze a Chance."
Els Catalan (Boston, MA)
This is not news... this is retribution...
You don't have to be a genius to understand that the disgruntled Democrat party is eliminating (character assassinating) anyone that helped Trump get elected. Fox News is just happy to oblige as we all know that FoxNews is the left-leaning conservative channel. Now there are no more serious threat to the Democrats for next elections because those who are conservative that still work at FNC already are damaged goods in the public eye. O'Reilly had gravitas and composure, he made his point with solid, mature arguments, not with shallow reasoning.
Besides BillO would go after liberal judges that were soft on convicted pedophiles, rapists, criminals. He also was the ONLY one to wage a war on Christmas that only he knew how hit the left, and hit them hard. He would also, with the help of Waters, help expose the real damage done by the liberals at the academia level in Universities, etc. by exposing the ignorance of students in every campus, as we hear them repeat talking points from liberal outlets not knowing anything about the subject. Although he was just one, he was on prime time, he was beating all the libTV that regurgitate the talking points from Media Matters narrative.
If anything, this marks a milestone on our approach to the Big Brother government we all hate so much.
The US is no longer is this the land of the Free, this is the land of the free as long as you toe the liberal line... or else: they will Bill'OReilly you.
Marian (New York, NY)
When The Times stops endorsing the Clintons and instead does its best to oust them, i.e., publishes a serious, front-page, above-the-fold piece on the Clintons' reflexive abuse of women, it will begin to have some, if sorely belated, credibility on this issue.
Dougal E (Texas)
Nothing O'Reilly was accused of compares to what Bill Clinton was accused of, and yet Democrats defended "the Big He" to the bitter end. Remember, "It's just about sex!"? Why not apply the same standard to O'Reilly? There is no compelling evidence that he ever raped anyone. There is no compelling evidence that he broke any laws. Clinton committed perjury in front of a federal judge.

Democrats are nothing if not duplicitous.
Maxine (Michigan)
Sad day. I enjoyed Bills commentary and intelligence. I deplore how our society has become vulturous. I am a scientist and a feminist to a degree but not ridiculous. I am sad to see where we are going as a society. I think Fox took the cowards way out.
Jeffrey (Michigan)
How wonderful. It's 2017, you can be a total pig and still get $20+ million for leaving the company where you harassed women. Bill O'Reilly ought to be in jail...along with our buffoon "so called" president.
Theo (Manhattan)
What criminal offensives did they commit?
Joanne (Chicago)
Ummmm....sexual assault and sexual coercion, for starters.
David (Madison)
Why would any women defend vile misogynists like Donald Trump, Roger Ailes, or Bill O'Reilly?
falcon1 (south of the mason-dixon)
Why would any man, for that matter?
Michael Hoffman (Pacific Northwest)
It’s beyond farce to see readers blab on and on about what a fraud and faker O’Reilly is when the Times continues to employ a reporter who was behind the Saddam-has weapons-of-mass-destruction imposture which led to the US invasion of Iraq. Has O’Reilly done anything comparable to the instigation of a foreign war that destabilized the Middle East and led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people? Truly, liberal arrogance and double standards are without shame.
Bob (My President Tweets)
Now the real question:
When does trump give o'reilly the media of freedom?
John (NYC)
Please remove the ignorant reply to this story from the "Readers React" section of the Times online homepage. It reads in part that O'Reilly has settled cases, but "has never been convicted". The sexual harassment suits he was involved in and settled are civil suits, not criminal ones, so he was never in jeopardy of being convicted. Please don't promote ignorance in your online edition.

A large segment of the population of the United States seems to have a limitless appetite for misogyny, racism, hate speech, conspiracy theories, 'fake news' and outright lies. Bill O'Reilly always impressed me as a genuinely contemptible individual whose vicious blather I simply could not tolerate for more than a few seconds without changing the channel. I am concerned that he may have acted in a sexually inappropriate manner during his tenure at Fox. I am more concerned that so many people watch and listen and support his ignorant vitriol. He and his ilk are exactly why the White House has it's current vulgar, shameless, opportunistic occupants. My only hope is that they face a similar and timely eviction.
Will (Chicago)
Pressure the advertisers that spend money on FOX and they will change. It's all about the money.

They rest of us should not watch any Fox shows or sports and the advertiser will go away too.
ACJ (Chicago)
What this entire sad episode has revealed, in a very stark manner, is the caste system we now have in corporate America. At the middle management level, O'Reilly's behavior, would have led to a certain termination with no benefits---don't let the door hit you are the way out. But, on the upper levels of corporate employment, whether you are ethically or morally challenged, or incompetent, or a sexcual predator, you exit the organization with seven figure + buy out.
underhill (ann arbor, michigan)
Heads they win, tails we lose: privatize the profits and socialize the losses. The very wealthy have got a good thing going on, for themselves...the rest of us would be better off if we had, in this country, a better, less trashy, class of billionaire.
Citybumpkin (None of Your Business)
"“This is a seismic cultural shift, when a corporation puts a woman’s rights above the bottom line,” said Wendy Walsh, a former guest on Mr. O’Reilly’s show[.]“

It would be a seismic cultural shift if that day ever comes, but today is not that day. O'Reilly is gone only because the negative PR was starting to hit the Murdoch's bottom line.

I might add that O'Reilly appears to be leaving with a pretty generous severance package, and will probably do just fine at another outlet.
Steve Shackley (Albuquerque, NM)
Well it's not like he's going to go broke. His pseudo-history tomes make him millions. Like JEG said here, it is only because advertisers pulled their money out of Fox. Otherwise, it would be funny business as usual at Fox. Hey, the President says O'Reilly is ok, and it's his primary news source, so what could be wrong?
Jack (Nyc)
No Worry Bill
Don Is Hiring
Does he have your resume yet
Actually you could just borrow Don's
Darby (WV)
O'Reilly leaving Fox is about money. He would still be on tonight, doing his shtick and abusing women if advertisers had not started jumping off of the Fox ship. This is not new or isolated behavior, it is years of him abusing women because Fox allowed it to happened...because he made them money. And the women were disposable.

I find it hard to believe Fox suddenly developed a feminist conscious.
frazerbear (New York City)
Let me understand. Fox is paying O'Reilly $25 million for sexual harassment. If they had any decent values, they would have fired him for breach of contract and not paid him a penny.
Swathi (NY)
All this is about is the 14 billion dollar Sky News deal in the UK.
News Corp will use jettisoning O'Reilly to show they are 'fit and proper' to own that media property.
I hope the Brits nix the deal - if not, they will have to live with a 'Foxified' Sky News.
I expect very little to change at Fox News. They have accepted Ailes and O'Reilly's obnoxious behavior and fostered a toxic work environment not to speak of a channel spouting prejudice and falsehoods. Firing these two lechers is just window dressing to get the Sky News deal thru.
Pathetic.
Karen (Cambridge)
They're paying him $25 million for losing all their advertisers???
Chris (Florida)
I can't believe a man of such power would actually have sexual relations with someone as young and as vulnerable as a 22-year-old female intern, and then lie about it to save his job..... oh wait, wrong Bill.

This Bill -- O'Reilly -- may have made rude remarks and (gasp!) propositioned fully grown women. Off with his head!!!
JS (Michigan)
The harassed women get 15 millions, and the harasser gets. Yeah!
Amy Mason (Texas)
Are you kidding me? This is despicable to say the least!! Apparently, we are ok with teaching are youth that if you lie, cheat, steal, and treat people like they are less than (women, minorities, special needs children, hard working families, etc...), then you get rewarded with $25 million dollars or maybe even the Presidency. Bill O'Reilly is a disgusting pig and so are all of his cronies, including the Murdochs, Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, the executives of United Heathcare and anyone else who gets away with being an absolute slime of human being and then collecting a huge pay off for it. I don't want any of them having influence on my children or any of today's youth that are the future of this country! IDIOCRACY!!! See the movie. Priorities anyone??
AchillesMJB (NYC, NY)
How amoral is Rupert Murdoch? Only when the advertizers pulled their ads did they take action against O'Reilly.
LA (California)
Being obnoxious seems to pay off these days!!! That's too bad! There are so many, many reasonable folks in these fabulous United States it's a wonder they aren't the ones making the decisions, rules and regs!
John Gilday (Las Vegas)
Hope he uses the 25 million to do as much damage to the NY Times and its editors and reporters as they have done to him. Go get em Bill!!!
rl (nyc)
You blame the Times but it was his advertisers who deserted him. You blame the Times, but it was Murdoch who fired him
Tony (New York)
O'Reilly should have hired Bubba as a character reference to affirm that sexual harassment is a normal part of the power relationship between men and weaker women. O'Reilly should have hired James Carville to talk about what happens when you find women in trailer parks. I'm sure Lanny Davis could have spun O'Reilly's conduct to make him look like a saint. Alas, O'Reilly is not a Clintonian Democrat.
tt (CA)
Immoral hypocrite who used his TV personality to manipulate a whole generation of conservatives has now finally found his rightful place in history.
Dana (NJ)
Jeez, is this nimrod really important enough to warrant three of four headlines on the top fold. All else must be right in the world, but I guess I missed that headline...
Chris (Florida)
Now that he's leaving with $25 million, maybe he's eligible to join the Clinton Foundation. Bills of a feather!
Bob (My President Tweets)
Hey as long as o'reilly's money goes to help the millions The Clinton Foundation has already helped, like AIDS patients in sub-Saharan Africa, I'm fine with o'reilly's millions finally going to a good cause.

Would you prefer it went to The Trump Foundation for yet another potrait of commrade trump?
Jagan (Portland, OR)
Its James Murdoch's Fox news now. He is member of the British Labor Party.
James Murdoch with his American wife Kathryn Hufschmid Murdoch. Kathryn works for the Clinton Climate Initiative, a charitable foundation set up by the former U.S. president, Bill Clinton in 2006.
I get it now.... Your are doomed conservatives, libertarians and Republicans....James Murdoch is cleaning up Fox News of an alternative voices to the leftist narratives!
Suzanne Lowe (Massachusetts)
O'Reilly's $25 million severance (probably in his contract) makes this whole situation feel even worse to me. Fox pays $13 million over more than a decade to women who did nothing wrong, but pays their sexual harasser $25 million to stop doing something that is morally reprehensible. It's just another way women face double standards and discrimination.
Truthtalk (San francisco)
Horrid behavior at work results in a $25 million dollar payday. I chose the wrong profession. I don't understand why companies repeatedly make such payments. Can FOX not simply terminate his contract? Let him sue for wrongful termination if he has nothing to hide.
Charles (California)
His settlement is equal to 1 years salary; 25 million. And he had renewed his contract for another 3 years. Bill has obviously not changed making him very very expensive for Fox News. At 25 million a year, that's a BIG hit. Bill is motivated by arrogance. i am betting that he will seek out someone to blame.
Ron C (Detroit)
Fox will make Rush an offer he can't refuse and the ratings will hit the roof! More haters would watch than actual fans.
John LeBaron (MA)
It's a shame, really. He seemed like such a nice fella.
Brenda (NYC)
To the commenter who said "O'Reilly is a victim of political correctness since no one was convicted" - (1) Do not insult O'Reilly by dragging him into left-wing victim playing (he went there on his own), be a good conservative and accept that O'Reilly acted wrongfully, (2) The evidence was apparently enough for Fox to decide to pay off quietly, rather than take the public relations hit. If the evidence hadn't been good enough, Fox would have let the women complain publicly. Please do not demand that the already overburdened court system be a gatekeeper for a wrongdoer to accept responsibility - Fox correctly didn't waste the court's time (and turn itself into the news, rather than a reporter of the news). The problem is that O'Reilly was permitted to be a pig, doing wrong, for years.

In my opinion, the settlements that Fox paid should have counted as taxable income to O'Reilly, at least that would have slightly deterred him from his piggish behavior. Or maybe not.

There should be zero tolerance for sexual molestation, whether it's a power play (usual primary reason) or a sex play. This will happen when men shun other men who brag about "getting some" as if women were vending machines.
Danielle2206 (New York, NY)
Is there a single "family values conservative" who wasn't guilty of the very things they criticized in others? Newt Gingrich. Ted Haggard. Robert Bentley. And on and on.
solsjkar (New York)
The guy was a nasty piece of work and a dangerous journalist if you can call him one. I dont think news corps really realise the extent of thier responsibility to journalism, nor do individual journalists, in fact very few do.

As for Fox News, who cares? It's all full of wierd Stepford Wives like characters who operate men which themselves hold no ability to critical thinking. A very strange network indeed!
marysia (MA)
Maybe Fox would avoid this recurrent problem if it hired older women and younger men.
Activist Bill (Mount Vernon, NY)
The hypocrites are out in full force in the comments. They gave President Bill Clinton a full pass when he was groping and sexually assaulting women in the White House, and even earlier when he was Governor of Arkansas. The only reason they are commenting about O'Reilly is because he's perceived as a conservative commentator.
Jim (Baltimore)
In spite of the media tilt that only conservative men prey on subordinate women, I will bet that there are a lot of very liberal men at other networks who are making a fortune telling jokes about conservatives going astray who are hoping that the women that they have propositioned because they (the male star) have money and power, they are hoping that their past targets keep their mouths shut and go away.
chefjune (<br/>)
I find it appalling that he and many others get paid handsomely when they are terminated. Seems to me that whenever an employee is terminated for cause they should lose all their benefits. Why do we pay people to leave their jobs when they have violated the terms of their employment?
MC312 (Chicago)
I like FOX but shed no tears for O'Reilly, he is such a blowhard. He did some good things, promote Kate's Law, for one. He delivered the current events well but became such a pompous diva it was distracting.

One observation from some of these comments, though. O'Reilly hasn't gone through the court system. Big corporations shell out huge money all the time over baseless accusations if they can just shove them out of the way and be done with it. Whether O'Reilly is guilty or not isn't my call nor my concern. Whatever. But there isn't solid evidence or a court verdict that he's guilty. Though he probably is.

When Hillary was going through all her scandals, bleached emails, Foundation donations for favors, etc, the Left was screaming "No proof! No Proof!" To this day the Left excoriates all those who didn't vote for her. The Foundation donations are about Zero now. But nothing fishy?

There sure is a lot of smugness here.
vandalfan (north idaho)
I am puzzled about your use of the phrase "Fox News". It has never been a legitimate news source, rather just extremist Right Wing propaganda.
Bert Floryanzia (Sanford, NC)
I am now firmly convinced that having barge-loads of money deludes we males of the species into believing we're "all that, and a bag of chips."

How did these guys, Ailes and O'Reilly, ever think younger, good-looking women would want them in the first place? I mean, did they ever look in the mirror? And what did they see when they gazed into it?

Past glories, I suppose. But not the fat, out of shape, turkey-neck wattled visages that were really staring back at them.

And then they had the nerve to get mad when they were rejected. Wow.
uga muga (miami fl)
Agreed. Besides, O'Reilly always looked effeminate to me with all that eye makeup and such.
Jim (Baltimore)
The young girls don't want the old men, they want the money that the old men have. Why you think all those twenty something year old blonde bimbos married a seventysomething-year old Hugh Hefner? They were hoping he would die on their watch, and they would inherit. The world is full of stories of old, fat, RICH guys marrying trophy wives, and the women are not marrying because of love, romance, sex appeal, or hope of a family. They are all in the relationship in the hope of a Lottery payoff.
older and wiser (NY, NY)
Fox News dumped Bill O'Reilly. What did the Democratic party do with Ted Kennedy? Lionize him.
Pnut (Uk)
This repulsive hypocrite is both finally having a comeuppance, and simultaneously a contemporary avatar of everything the promise of American freedom guarantees will manifest.

Please keep that in mind. Your worldview and system of government are the petri dish for this man and everything he has enabled.

There will be greater demonstrations of this in the future. I committed the ultimate sacrilege by expatriating, because I finally realized that there is no good fight, only crashing your body, mind, and spirit against mindlessly contrary forces.
Crusader Rabbit (Tucson, AZ)
Fox is still Fox. Not so bright women with too much make-up and showing some "leg" low-browing a lot of dog whistle nausea. Alpha males from fraternity land sneering and snarling. BOR was just the precursor to more of the same. Contrast CNN- whatever your political views at least they got brain one (and the always cool Anderson Cooper- class act.)
J (PNW)
Cleaning out the rot at Fox would challenge Hurcules.
jflores (nyc)
Our very own SPOTUS (Sexual Predator Of The United States) said that he believed that O'Reilly did nothing wrong and that he is a good man who never should have settled. When is SPOTUS going to be removed for his similar behavior? More brave women should come forward and sue O'Reilly for the 25 million he is getting from FOX to go away. Why should he benefit?
Publius (NYC)
Hopefully the lawsuits will eat up his $25 million golden parachute.
Brian (Brooklyn)
Had Bill O'Reilly wanted to be cleared, he would have declined to settle and then fought any accusations in court if the complainant decided to sue. His hypocrisy lies in the fact that he claims that the accusations are unfounded while having forestalled their verification or repudiation by settling them out-of-court.
MH (OR)
So he'll be let go from Fox and probably get a multi-million dollar golden parachute worth much more than the settlements he paid to his victims.

People like this should not be allowed to buy their way out of prosecution. They should face the same system of justice that the rest of us face, and their victims should be allowed to follow up in civil cases to get compensation for damages against him and the executives and managers that let him keep doing it.
Plennie Wingo (Weinfelden, Switzerland)
A true role model for a fallen time - abuse and arrogance means you walk away with millions.
Charles (California)
Next in Fox's cross-hairs:: Sean Hannity...
J (PNW)
I hold despicable O'Reilly personally responsible for the murder of Dr. Tiller, who performed legal abortions in Kansas.
Amy Mosley (Berkeley, California)
The best known leader of the crusade against "political correctness" will henceforth forever be known as the man brought down by his own boorish, repugnant, sexist, "politically incorrect" behavior. Isn't karma grand?
dsjump (lawtonok)
This is just one more example of the kind of one-sided reporting O'Reilly was always beefing about. All we hear of are the times Messrs. O and A struck out. We need more coverage of their successes to get an idea of their win ratios. I distinctly remember a New Yorker story about Michael Bloomberg back during his first run for mayor. "I get slapped a lot," said the then-Republican candidate of his relations with women, "but I also get laid a lot."
JW (Colorado)
I see some are upset because there was no 'conviction' in a trial. Well, apparently there was enough evidence of wrong-doing to make FOX pay out thirteen million in silence money.. you don't do that kind of thing unless there's fire behind that smoke screen. O'Reilly has a personality that makes it easy for me to believe he would throw his weight around. Lots of folks are famous and have money, very few of them have issues like Bloviating Bill has. If any of the commentators at other less right-wing networks had similar problems, you can be there would be some action from the right-wing politicos making hay with it. So, good riddance. Thank you advertisers who listened to your customers, listened to your conscious, and decided not to support this guy.
Urania_C (Anywhere.)
It would be nice if Trump could also be let go based on how many millions of dollars he has already cost the US.

That would be in country reputation loss, state-paid trips & benefits to his businesses and interests, worldwide public ridicule and mental agony, not to mention insubordination against the mandate of the US electorate, when his plan to bring back jobs fails spectacularly.

Additionally, we should not forget the monetised cost in dollars of human & intelligence resources which are going into getting to the bottom of russiagate.

Finally, it's also worth including the cost of damaged ally relationships he will leave behind a trail of idiotic tweets every time a crime is committed in France or Sweden, etc, which he deems fit to baselessly equate to a terrorist attack so that his trigger-happy ultra-right pals manning the military/industrial complex he thinks he controls, can get richer.

So, I guess Ailes and O'Reily are a good start towards the right direction. Let's keep that momentum against the corrupt, middle-aged deviant 'superman' whose delusions of world domination wakes them up every morning, at the very expense of basic human decency.
Auntie DJ (Melbourne)
The entire culture at Fox needs to be cleaned up. Most of the women look like they're getting ready for glamour shots and the way they are seated at see through desks with camera angles designed to capture plenty of leg and stiletto demonstrates a kind of breezy objectification that runs counter to serious journalism. The old guys clearly have no clue. Maybe the younger Murdochs will eventually bring some dignity to the operation.
Eternal Vigilance (Northwest)
Bill O'Reilly may receive as much as $25 million in severance pay, which sends the wrong message; that it pays to be a sexual offender.
jazz one (wisconsin)
Certainly shedding no tears for BOR. He just gets richer.

Would be awesome if some of his victims would get him on civil suits.
Otherwise, he just keeps denying, and walks away tens of millions $$ enriched. .
And pumping out those lousy, 'co-written' books.
Nice 'work' if you can get it, I guess ...

And if DJT picks him up and plunks him into some admin. / gov't position that he has zero qualification for ... well, we'll know we've hit some new nadir.
Wait for it. They're certain to be hitting the links together soon at M-a-L.

As I started this ... shed no tears for old Billy the goat ... he'll be just fine.
Ugh.
sarss (texas)
Out at Fox,but he won't go away. Stand by for his new job.
Ridem (KCMO (formerly Wyoming))
I wish I could get fired "for cause" and be given a $25M kick out of the door.
Dolores (Birmingham, Al)
No fox news for me. Firing oreilly and paying him to go away is hypocrisy. What's wrong with this picture?
Ben Luk (Australia)
Now that old dinosaur O'Reilly has finally been given the boot I suspect Trump will have to watch reruns of Sesame Street for intellectual stimulation.
Bob (My President Tweets)
Bill, don't even worry about it.
Just run for president on the gop ticket in 2020.
Apparently you can be a slimey sexual predator and still be elected gop president.
[email protected] (Detroit MI)
I've worked in corporate America for decades in the legal department and the size of the settlements tells me there was real truth to the allegations. What's sad is that so many people still support him. People who purport to be value driven--what values are those? I've been sexually harassed at work and there is not enough room here to describe the harms it has done. The O'Reilly's of this world need to no longer prosper, but sadly our culture seems to be dividied on this point.
Alanq (Wilkes barre pa)
They did O'Reilly a favor. His show was stale and played out. He's a great commentator and he should give a mea culpa and take some sensitivity training.
Then start a fresh new show. He'd be a bonanza for MSNBC!
Bob (My President Tweets)
Fox has it's standards.
No sexual predation that may allienate advertisers.

Apparently the RNC has no such rule.
So all you rights kids out there with presidential aspirations, feel free to grab all the strange women's vaginas you want.
Rightist president can be draft dodger's, divorcees, wierdos who want to date their own daughters, tax cheats, and valdimir putin groupies.

Must be nice to have such a clueless base.
Joe (Ohio)
NYT,
Thank you for all that you've done. We need you now more than ever. Stay strong.
Kathleen (Oakland, California)
The reason far right conservative men are disrespectful to women is largely due to the patriarchal view that men have the right to control and dominate women - especially their bodies in terms of birth control, sex education and abortion. The fact that they are still controlling women's minds is evident in the number of women who voted for the predator in chief. That is the saddest part for me.
MSPWEHO (West Hollywood, CA)
Today the pundits are asking, "What's next for Bill O'Reilly?"

Hopefully, what's next is the cancellation of his publishing deal at Henry Holt, the prosecution of multiple humiliating and very costly sexual harassment claims against him, and his swift exit from the national media spotlight.
thomasef53 (<br/>)
Can someone please explain why O'Reilly got $25,000,000 as a good-bye gift?
MLH (DE)
Please someone explain, in detail, why O'Reilly gets a "package" to leave.

Why isn't he just fired? Does he have a contract that says otherwise? If someone behaved like that to other employees at the 7-Eleven management could just fire them. And they might not. But if they did, they would not compensate that employee.

I would like to know why he is just not fired. Otherwise, its permission, if you are a profit maker for your company, you cannot just be "fired", but you get compensated because they were at fault for not controlling your behavior in the past. ?????
makatl (ATL)
I worked in the high tech industry from 1983 until 2009 around the world and in different cultures. My mantra was women may had made giant leaps in the workplace but men have never changed. Some comments just need to roll off our backs and some need to be escalated to your manager, HR or senior executives. Most women that work that experience boorish comments or full on sexual discrimination or harassment are not going to receive million dollar payouts and the men that do this are likely not going to be terminated. I wish the $13 million Mr. O'Reilly paid these women had been given to charity but importantly, I wish these women had taken the steps to report his actions and words to proper channels. Public allegations years after the action doesn't solve any workplace issue. Working men and women need to know that due process will occur. It's not easy reporting any degree of harassment or discrimination but that's the first step. Do workplace cultures change because women report men acting beyond awful? Not in my experience. And of course, I've always hoped it would.
J Dub (San Francisco)
Any thoughts as to when O'Reilly will move to DC to join the current administration? According to Trump, O'Reilly "did nothing wrong." Certainly the two have a lot in common, including a large number of supporters who don't want to be menaced by "true" news. Or who just don't care...
jorge uoxinton (<br/>)
Does Bill O’Reilly being forced Out at Fox News count as "News"?. I don't think so. They just made him richer, happier, free to take on other pursuits like volunteering at a local church -- if they'll let him in!.
Diane (Poughkeepsie, NY)
How soon before Trump gives him a cabinet position?
Publius (NYC)
Reichsminister of of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda?
Ruben Kincaid (Brooklyn, NY)
And we elected Trump.

"We" didn't. That was very much against our will, over half of voters were against his election and many appalled. We will work hard to try to limit the damage and bring change as soon as ever we can.
WASP (San Diego)
oh, happy days.
Bruce B. (Portland, OR)
What kind of world do we live in where we reward such behavior with a $25 million severance package? Was there ever a time when people of power and privilege paid dearly for their transgressions?
Out of Stater (Colorado)
A very corrupt, sickeningly callous world of unadulterated, unethical, under-regulated Capitalism; that's what world (country) we live in, my friend. As our Rapist in Chief would say, #Pathetic.

SCW (USA)
"Bill O Reilly was set up by a corrupt media and political system " - Wolfman from CA.

...and Donald Trump is a true patriot who deeply cares about the common man.

You demonstrate a strong capacity for critical thinking, Wolfman. Thanks for sharing your insight.
Chris (New York)
Congrats to the NYT for its investigative work and for breaking this story. All the same, I'm interested to see whether another network or media company will pick Mr. O'Reilly up as a host to cash in on his popularity.

The bottom line is that Mr. O'Reilly was dumped by Fox only after advertisers pulled out of the show. Nevertheless, he is still popular amongst millions of viewers in this country, notwithstanding the sexual harassment allegations against him. So long as there is money to be made, Mr. O'Reilly will probably be given the opportunity to spew his "spin." One can only hope that if The Factor is reincarnated, it will broadcast on a diminished platform that will limit his corrosive and deceptive influence on the public.

Under ideal circumstances, media outlets would refuse to broadcast The Factor on principle--the untruthful content of his broadcasts and his deviance would debar him from the media entirely. But as we all know, when money talks, nobody walks. All the same, it's great to see him get bounced from Fox News. It's been a long time coming!
Dudeist Priest (Ottawa)
Great job Times staff!

Now, where is the Trump-Russia piece we all need?
Mulholland Drive (NYC + LA)
The extreme partisan vitriol that has overtaken television, radio, and the internet has to end...as it is tearing the country apart and distracting us from the real challenges, enemies, and opportunities we have ahead of us.

When you pull back the curtain on the Bill O'Reillys, the Rush Limbaughs, the Sean Hannitys and the Breitbarts and Drudges, you realize that these people are nothing more than losers and hacks that are paid handsomely to spew a deeply divisive political ideology without any guilt or remorse for the destructive ill that their entertaining "commentary" creates.

Yes, there are partisan hacks on the left...but the right-wing conservatives sheltered and nurtured by FOX News since the 1990's are a special breed of hate and evil that deserve their eventual and just demise. I welcome this as the long overdue clean-up of media that has to occur if this country is going to survive. It's no longer as simple as turning the channel, not when this sort of media delivers its truest manifest of incompetence and corrupt buffoonery that is Donald J Trump as President of the United States.
keith (washington, dc)
O'Reilly is of Fox. But the fox is not out of O'Reilly
margo harrison (martinsburg, wv)
Why in the world does FOX have to pay these guys to go away? When you get fired for cause you're usually out the door same day w/ no more than your earnings up to that point. Ailes and O'Reilly get more money to go away than the victims got in compensation. In what world is that fair?
Christopher P. (NY, NY)
Let's see, Billy Bush's career was kaput after he helped enable Donald Trump's sickening confession of being a serial groper, and now Bill O'Reilly has been dumped, though his viewership was actually steady and climbing after the NY Times investigations of his sexual harassment proclivities. So media execs are taking the high road, which does not reflect the road taken these days by untold millions in the general populace -- who made said serial groper our current president.
Zan (Nashville)
The media loves nothing as much as covering the media, unless it is a high profile media figure felled by the media. The Times' articles now have become editorials about, surprise, the media.
Jk (Chicago)
I wonder if Peter Griffin is next....
HC45701 (Virginia)
That O'Reilly was ousted because of his reprehensible conduct toward women is certainly a good thing. But I sense confusion in the celebration and gloating of people who don't like O'Reilly for his conservative political views. Perhaps they see it as an added bonus that a truculent conservative is off the air, but I've watched enough of The Factor to know that O'Reilly actually was more reasonable than many of the others on Fox News. He wasn't a second amendment absolutist for example; he stated many times his belief in reasonable gun control measures. He was affable enough to appear on The View, David Letterman, to debate Jon Stewart and to generally engage with those on the left in a good-humored way. The same can't be said of someone like Sean Hannity. So - be careful what you wish for.
David dennis (Michigan)
For those who say this was a left wing lynch mob out to get O'Reilly on baseless charges, take note that a very expensive and presumably reputable law firm assessed the facts and claims and then advised Fox as to what action to take. They would not have done so if the charges and claims were flimsy.
The Iconoclast (Oregon)
I read all this yesterday as I did most of todays paper.
Sm (Georgia)
So. To tally up, harassing women at fox, a media company will get you fired. Harassing women as a candidate to be president of the United States.... Gets you elected to be the president of the United States.

Taking a vacation every weekend-still president

Conducting public business at your private residence-still president

Hiring your kin-still president

Libel against the previous president-still president

A boatload of lawsuits-still president

Basically enriching yourself and your cronies at the public expense-still president

I'm glad we have such high standards at Fox News.

Trevor Noah on The Daily Show nailed it: How did this guy, who glibly spun racist provocations, last so long?
Lazza May (London)

Could only happen in America.
TRA (KCMO)
I have been a long time FOX watcher and other news outlets as well. Recently FOX has misused our trust in professional journalism. I cannot condone this behavior in any sense and with this last hypocritical behavior by Bill O'Reilly I am done with FOX and will move on to another outlet.
Pnut (Uk)
I applaud your awakening and welcome you to a breath of fresh air outside their oppressive, emotional, mind control bubble. But their abuses are nothing new, and might have even moderated in the past few years.
John Smith (NY)
Can't wait for Mr. O'Reilly, Roger Ailes and Steve Bannon to create a new network. Supported by truly American companies who will rush to have their advertisements played it should be in place just in time for the 2018 elections. And unlike other Cable News programs only qualified people will be employed, In other words political correctness and affirmative action quotas will not apply.
Carolyn M. (Maryland)
The women who stood up to power, harassment and male "superiority" deserve much more than O'Reilly's 25 million payout - they deserve the respect of every future boss, every co-worker, every one of us.
Danielle2206 (New York, NY)
Since O'Reilly is no longer on the air and his loyal viewers will desperately miss their nightly dose of bigotry, sexism and cultural and white supremacy, they will just have to listen to whatever Trump says.
BANO (N.H.)
Does anyone else find it odd that O'Reily has become this monster and
Bill Clinton, accused of the same or worse became an elder statesman.
Is the hypocrisy deafening?
Tornadoxy (Ohio)
Here's the thing. It's not necessarily how MANY viewers he has, but WHO they are. Are they 60 plus males who may have engaged in similar behavior on their jobs in the past but have bought their last car, house, and diapers and don't pay $5 for a cup of coffee? This makes all the difference. As the O'Reilly story offends the free spending younger segments of our society advertisers catering to this group face a real risk being associated with the O'Reilly "brand." The old folks, majority male, may not care so much about O'Reilly's misbehavior. They probably did it themselves.
Phillip Usher (Oakland, CA)
O'Reilly states his sacking is the result of "completely unsubstantiated claims". Sounds like a case of wrongful termination. If so, shouldn't Bill sue Fox to restore his job and protect his good name?
Eric Masterson (Hancock)
Dear NYT. Please send a copy of today's paper to Mr. O'Reilly with a cover note "This is what good journalism looks like" and send me the bill. Thanks
Joe Paper (Pottstown, Pa.)
Right,, if O'Reilly was a perfect gentleman most readers of the NYTimes still loath him.
What he did was 100% wrong but I get the feeling many here are happy.
Like with Trump...most here hope he fails.
John R (Storrs, Conn.)
He will be dearly missed by the millions who tuned in to his show every night.
frank monaco (Brooklyn NY)
All this shows is the Bottom Line is what counts. Fox paid out in the past and the sponsers stayed put all was fine. . As soon as the Sponsers were fleeing it was time for O'Reilly to go, Will the culture there change who knows? One thing is for sure it will if the Murdochs feel it will affect the bottom line.
Ed (NY) (NYC)
This was a decision driven by money and little else. O'Reilly will no doubt find a new venue to continue to thrill his audience with his venom, and Fox News will continue to promote O'Reilly's politics with little disruption.
Andrew (Sonoma County)
Fox News clearly had a problem with women and serious news reporting for quite some time.

Fox News was about scantily clad female reporters and commentators, jockeying with males dressed in conservative suits.

Why were the men not made to wear tanks tops or skimpy jeans and cowboy boots or sandals, to show of their muscles or fat bellies?

It's time for Fox News and other news agencies to recognize the double standard that has been allowed to flourish.

Perhaps removing O Reilly was the first step in a new direction. Megan Kelly should be traveling to Rome to shake the Popes hand soon!
common sense advocate (CT)
This revolting harasser is leaving Fox with a $25 million payout - and Fox was fully aware of his crimes for years but didn't fire him until advertisers started leaving in droves. That makes Fox just as contemptible, and worthy of dismissal, as O'Reilly.
Haz (MN)
How abominable of Cardinal Dolan. The stories of child molestation are not enough of a stain on his church?
Skip B (Tacoma WA)
Please stop the constant stream of Bill O'Reilly stories. Who cares? I certainly don't. I have never watched his show or paid any attention to him before, so why would I now? The man is apparently a serial sexual predator. The Times' breathless hour-by-hour coverage is focusing on an alleged criminal, giving him free publicity he can leverage into his next position of media prominence. Don't be an accessory to his abhorrent and abusive behavior. Ignore him.

When and if he emerges at another media outlet, then spill some ink about the fact that they have given this detestable person a platform for his hypocrisy. The fact that someone enables his behavior again would be news. The fact that he has lost his job (even paid a large sum of money) is not.
Djanga (Dallas, Tx)
O'Reilly, author of many best-sellers having titles beginning with "Killing." Who would ever have thought that such an erudite man might have a problem with conducting himself as a civilized human being?
Albert Malvehy (Miami)
Amazing he is being paid more to leave than was cumulatively paid out to the women he mistreated.
Richard (Wynnewood PA)
Bill will find a new home on Russia's RT news channel. His bigotry and hatred will be right on sync with Putin's.
Katz (Tennessee)
O'Reilly has set an arrogant, racist, misogynist tone for 20 years.

Not until seeing some of his worst clips did I realize how many of his talking points had become part of the Old White Male political platform, and how toxic his influence had been.

Good riddance. I hope and pray that he disappears from the national news radar so fast the FAA starts searching for wreckage.
m (philadelphia)
Is this a joke? Both perpetrators Ailes and O'Reilly, get bigger settlements out of Fox than the victims? Ailes got $40 million, O'Reilly will get $25. Carlson got $20 million, the total for the rest of the victims was $13.5 million.

Mind blown.
Markel (USA)
Hypocrisy abounds in the commentariat. Never heard any of this from the comments sheep when WJC was on the skillet. Nonetheless, I wish some of these cases would go to trial. It is a strange world when accusers are considered to be right even if they are not. Many, if not all, of those rejoicing here could have some sort of accusation lodged against them or their loved ones. If handled like this, with no courage, they could find others rejoicing at their expense. Our businesses and our populace( including O'Reilly and his accusers) had best grow up. I hope they all find some peace not just the money thrown at them.
Phillip (Manhattan)
An odious presence, sleazy might be a more apt description of his persona. A loss only to those starved for entertainment.
urmyonlyhopeobi1 (Miami)
No spin zone! Good-bye and good riddance!
Dave H (NY)
I will be alert to any company that advertises with Fox and will not spend my dollars on their products. The Murdoch family has done far more damage to America than any other entity. Constant lying by media is not free speech.
bob g (norwalk ct)
Let us not be led astray--remember the real enemy are the godless, P.C. liberals. They alone are responsible for the collapse of morals in our shining city on the hill or whatever it is I think I'm trying to say.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Mr. O'Reilly or Roger Ailes. They are the victims of fake-news P.C. socialist Muslim extremists.
Karen (California)
That's okay; apparently the door to the Presidency is still open to him.
crogre (High Falls, NY)
he should be in the cell next to the trumpeter ...
deus02 (Toronto)
The irony of all of this is mind-boggling. While his lawyer and himself are still in a state of denial about his actions while blaming a left-wing conspiracy and as usual of his type, playing the victim, OReilly, being the arrogant psychopath that he is, made a very good living specializing in character assassinations of groups and people on a daily basis.
Bill (Columbus, OH)
This is THE most important news today, as seen by the editors of the NYT, meriting the lead and second lead articles. There is nothing more important, not the wretched poverty of our less fortunate, not the cleanliness of our air, not North Korea's nukes and ICBMs? Please, you are stooping to the level of the journalism you so proudly deplore.
deus02 (Toronto)
True, however, in a rather terribly ironic way, there is a relationship here. O'Reilly and his constant spewing of vitreol and character assassinations against those that showed even the slight disagreement with him and Fox, as a station and its on-air personalities, went a long way to create the mindset of those, no doubt, the majority of whom elected Donald Trump and the important issues you mentioned that his administration will make considerably worse.
Shawna (Brooklyn, ny)
Thank you, NY Times for another wonderful service to all Americans. Bill O'Reilly may say crude comments to women - so big deal. I am a woman and I am not offended. Women have become big crybabies. Bill's show was the only one I enjoyed. I did not need him to act like the Pope - I needed him to give us the real facts - which he did superbly. I have no interest in Fox news now - so I guess you could count this as a quite a feather in your caps. How about going back to real journalism with integrity - like the news I grew up with. Now that would be real progress.
deus02 (Toronto)
Shawna:

The idea that you could seriously believe that O'Reilly's "alternative facts" are real, clearly indicates you aren't the least bit interested in "real journalism". He has been caught countless times fabricating stories about himself and his talking points to the point like Trump, he has pretty much been categorized as just another pathological liar.

Unlike O'Reilly, REAL journalists don't do daily character assassinations on the air of those that might disagree with him.
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, Ca)
And he gets twice as much as the victims got as his punishment. That's the American Way, all right.
Hassan (Saudi Arabia)
Seriously, this is what I can't fathom when women came up abruptly -- after a couple of years, ironically, after a decade and so - and sued hefty names in the name of sexual harassment. I totally can understand how disgusting and unacceptable when they are sexually abused from people above them in organisational hierarchy, but I can't digest when they came after the case has been buried, and even healed and forgotten. What I have observed from plenty of sexual harassment that dominated and shadowed the media is that either women have been so long ultra-conservative and changed their political way to adopt democratic values, or they want money and put their enemies in front of law and society, then guess what? They harried uncontrollably toward journalists to tell the surprised stories. Okay, it's lawful and just to get ferocious, evil people into custody and JAIL, but it is also a question mark when they came up in this checkered way. While I do like excessively media who unveils the violation of workplace ethics that happen behind the curtain, I don't like the way people who reveal and execute it. How beneficial for companies and people to address the issues immediately and effectively if those, say, sexual harassment have been exposed from women to judiciary and governmental agencies? That's to say, when the issues pinpointed from the beginning - and abusers will be accountable for every sexual motivations - those allegations will be mitigated and declined sharply, I guess!
Sam Kirshenbaum (Chicago, IL)
I wouldn't revel in O'Reilly's demise too much. Fox will simply plug in another angry white man to throw red meat at an audience all too willing to accept the idea of majority victimhood. Whether it's Tucker Carlson or some other purveyor of vitriol, you can still count on the demonizing of moderates and liberals, the labeling of Democrats as traitors, reports from the front lines of the war on Christmas, Obama-Clinton conspiracies, and the evils of minorities and immigrants. The snake may have shed this layer of skin, but it will quickly grow another.
deus02 (Toronto)
Tucker Carlson is a loser whom has been fired from about every other on-air job he has ever had and since Fox sets the bar so low for on-air personalities, he'll probably last for awhile.
IJMOToday (California)
can anybody explain to me how a christian man who's written books on Jesus and God and blah blah can serially sexually harrass women?
rachael (los cabos, mexico)
In this day and age it is inexcusable for men to speak to women as O'Reilly has done.
When I first started working as a teacher (years ago) at the age of 24 I had a principal who spoke to me inappropriately and at the time I did not realize it was sexual harassment. Now, I am older, wiser and Bill O'Reilly should be older and wiser also!
LFDJR (San Francisco)
At the risk of being offensive (sorry) this close to Easter, is it possible that Bill O'Reilly is dying on the cross for the sins of Donald Trump? Will the voters now give a wink and a nod to Donald Trump for his transgressions? Will we see Bill O'Reilly rise from the dead? Stay tuned, eh?
W in the Middle (<br/>)
Perhaps NYT, MSM, Social Internet could coordinate/conspire to designate O'Reilly as...

"Fake Gravitas"

...and - on that basis - stop (aka censor) his no-spin spin, even before it gets from there to here...

Surely I jest - or not...

In either case - do realize, NYT, that we realize you worked so hard to take him out, because he was actually politically centrist...

And utterly exposed the bankruptcy of the totalitarian progressive left...

Though - agreed - his gender-specific condescension that was bleeding through the network, in multiple senses of the word, was somewhere between obnoxious and deeply disturbing...

So - enjoy your MOAB moment...

While you do actually look more manly landing a journalistic haymaker than an open-palm slap, Gray Lady...

Going to be interesting to see how well you can take one...

But - Mission Accomplished...

I had re-upped this year (albeit it at 60% off)...
steve (Hudson valley)
$25MM for his exit package? In the world of Fox being a pig apparently pays off financially and/or politically.
Robert Cohen (Atlanta-Athens GA area)
Bill is an interesting character, and likers & debunkers should not totally disagree.

Another Mr. Television, Milton Berle ditto.

Simply because he's not generic television blah.

I recall the afternoon (in Atlanta)) syndicated (FIRST or something tabloid) EDITION.

This was before the last decade of the twentieth century, and sensational "man bites dog" stories are generally interesting to us of
that lower MIDNIGHT INQUIRER pedestrian class.

Subsequently Debbie Norville with beautiful ringlet blonde hair
was doing that show or a copycat competitor.

She shoulda kept that unique hairdo.

Bill is of basketball player size and taught high school history (?) in Boston.

I once wrote him that I perceived his political show as common sense, which is the way he intends it.

The Fox regular Joe Six-pack attention stuck in first place for 10--20 years.

Didn't he beat Ted Turner's CROSSFIRE too?

As LBJ didn't exactly say: I betcha he could run for sheriff anywhere in the USA and be elected especially when the late county vote comes in.
Nuria (New Orleans)
I hope he gets at least $25 million worth of karma, too.
Fghull (<br/>)
Deplore what he did, does, and says. But he deserves less attention. Understand that he is the vehicle to the issues, but I would just like him to drop through the trap door for good!
Nasty Man aka Gregory (Boulder Creek, Calif.)
Bill big deal O'Reilly? And fortunately I don't even remember watching him, because I don't watch Fox; I do plan on hooking up dish Network; that been idling in the background for the past year, put on hold for five dollars a month since it's such a good deal from my needs
Tom Barrett (Edmonton)
What has America come to when heroes like Bill O'Reilly lose their job for sexually harrassing and bullying countless women? It is getting tough to be a misogynist. Maybe Bill should run for president.
Dennis Walsh (Laguna Beach)
Andy Borowitz on Facebook: "Being a serial sexual harasser has destroyed
Bill's career. The best he can hope for now is being President of the United States". Funny-True-Sad all at once.
Denise (Lafayette, LA)
Great news (not)--we get rid of O'Reilly and in his place get Tucker Carlson.
Joan (Missouri)
NYT, thank you for your investigative reporting. Good riddance to one of many disgusting males in our public society. I personally could not stomach more than a few sound bites of O'Reilly.
Robert (New York, NY)
After more than two decades since this thuggish man began his imposition, I don't yet know what changed in the last three weeks to bring about decency, but I am gratefully disinclined to look a gift horse in the mouth.
lrichins (nj)
O'Reilly definitely exemplifies the hypocrite, for years he has cheered on the religious right and this claim about how the 1950's were such a moral time in America (yeah, the KKK was certainly moral, women sexually harassed and it being laughed at was the good ole days) while he himself apparently is a pig tells a lot. But his hypocrisy goes well beyond that, he was from a blue collar family that was able to live in a long Island suburb rather than a slum in the city because of the gains the blue collar workers made under FDR and in the post war world, yet he was publicly contemptuous of unions. He sneered at affirmative action, yet in a sense the fact that a blue collar kid from Long Island could go to Harvard was in many ways similar, or that government aid likely allowed him to go there. And he routinely blamed the plight of the middle and working class on themselves, rather than point out the real culprits. Basically he was enamored of himself, the cult of one, and that explains both his rise and fall.
AM Foxnail (Burlington NJ)
Apparently it pays to be a misogynistic sleaze.
Saints Fan (Houston, TX)
The NY Times was strangely silent at the time of Bill Clinton.
Deborah Williams (Denver, CO)
You guys just don't get it. Sex outside marriage with a consenting adult is not illegal. Sexual harassment is.
Margareta Braveheart (Midwest)
Red herring. There were both news reports and editorials published by the NYT "at the time of Bill Clinton."
Chris (Florida)
Monica was a 22-year-old intern. It was worse than sexual harassment. It was abuse.
Margareta Braveheart (Midwest)
That they paid him $25million to leave boggles the mind. Sexual predation pays in unexpected ways (and costs the victims in unexpected ways, as well). What a sorry mess.
wko (alabama)
I have no sympathy for O'Reilly. Despicable man and behavior. Deserves what he got. But let's not forget how one other high profile man, leader of the free world, Mr. "I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky," and accused of rape and sexual harrassment by multiple women, was basically excused for his behavior by almost all dems/liberals, including women (and still is), didn't lose his job, and is now a mega-rich, still loved by the left, powerful man. Hypocrisy?? Yes indeed. And then there's Trump. It's all disgusting and all about power and money.
Lois Brenneman (New Milford, PA)
In my day, now ancient history, when a man made unwelcome advances at work - and it happened all the time - you told him to buzz off or else you countered with something like "Yeah, in your dreams" (often with a more vulgar version of that same sentiment). Now, it is a huge big deal with whiney babies filing law suits and getting people fired. I wish I had a nickel for every unwanted sexual comment or advance made by a man. Unless a man uses force to physically overpower you or else slips in drugs (ala Bill Cosby style), it is really not a hugely big deal. Today's snowflakes truly can't handle anything.

Newsflash: males have high levels of circulating testosterone. It causes them to often act like jerks - get over it. The reason all of you whiney babies are even here, today, in the first place, is because - from an evolutionary perspective - testosterone prompts males to pursue females. In the case of humans, said pursuit is sometimes conducted in socially inappropriately manner. Bottom line, it is NBD. Some folks truly need to get a life.
AccordianMan (Lefty NYC)
Bravo Lois.
Deborah Williams (Denver, CO)
This sounds like the odious "she was wearing a short skirt so was asking to be fondled/groped/raped" defense. And from a woman, no less! BTW, it's "whiny," not "whiney." Some folks truly need to get a dictionary.
Margareta Braveheart (Midwest)
What an interesting take on the crime of sexual assault. Males "act like jerks" in this way not because they are powerless over their hormones but because they are empowered by a culture that reinforces objectification of women.
HCK (Paris, France)
Let's be clear: sexual harassment, like rape, is not about sex, it's about abuse of power, it's bullying in its most extreme form. Sexual harassment is not just bullying and abuse, it's verbal rape. Fox News, with Ailes and Murdoch at the helm, has created a culture in which women are objects to be bullied, demeaned, abused and assaulted. Let's not forget that O'Reilly's wife also has allegations of physical abuse against her. Fox news ran the numbers and decided that advertising dollars were great enough that keeping O'Reilly on with quiet payouts was worth it. In other words, at Fox there is a price to pay for abusing a woman's dignity, and that price wasn't too high when put on the scales against Bill's viewership.

Don't view O'Reilly's firing as a triumph for women's dignity. Women's dignity never meant much, it's all about those advertising dollars. Noteworthy are the sponsors who did NOT pull ads, namely Angie's List (!) and Microsoft.
IonaTrailer (Los Angeles)
Sponsors pull out and Fox fires the serial sexual abuser....what do we have to do to fire the serial sexual abuser occupying the office of president? Am I the only one who sees the irony in this? Fox News created the Trump presidency.
scrane (Boise, ID)
The problem for FOX is not that he bullies women, but that he was exposed.
barbara jackson (adrian MI)
Nobody admits 'wrongdoing' until it hits them in the purse.
Phil (CT)
He leaves in disgrace, at least in the judgement of decent folk. Despicables may choose to view things differently.
wingate (san francisco)
So O ' Reilly was a hustling women so according to NYT and its readers all conservatives are perverts , child molesters or worse (if anything can worse than a child molester ) President pervert Clinton given a pass by the same liberal mentality and Chris Mathews lurid remarks ( caught on tape ) about Trump's wife that ok too.
spiffypaws (jupiter, fl)
THANK YOU NY TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Winston Smith (Utah)
Really glad I don't watch or pay for tv but I've seen snippettes of this guy/ utterly rude and bullying. American discourse has been poisoned by the likes of him. And I get the feeling Murdoch thinks it's all one big joke to appeal to the worst in us/ I long for the likes of Edward R Murrow and HL Mencken.
Kojo Reese (New York)
Guilty until proven guilty - maybe those who accused were in fact looking for a payday ? Is this beyond the realm of possibility ? There is no way of knowing for sure ? Or the actual facts of this case may have been much more pedestrian than is being portrayed here.. Good job NYT you brought down a good one ... using the lethal weapon of liberal shaming and innuendo on steroids.. The Maoist among you must be very happy today ... I know Mao himself would be proud - although this will not change the hearts and minds of those "deplorables" that voted for Trump :)
Diana (Centennial)
I noted that in O'Reilly's carefully crafted statement he used the words "unfounded claims", which just means the claims were not proven, (yet). It does not mean they were false.
The New York Times struck a blow for decency in bringing all the allegations against Mr. O'Reilly to light. I hope the Times will laser focus next on Sean Hannity. He needs to go.
Fox News has been a soapbox for those peddling racism, xenophobia, and certainly misogyny, which has been to the detriment of this country and has been a cause for the division we are feeling so keenly right now. They passed out the swill of lies, and half-truths, and people drank deeply. O'Reilly's firing was a victory for this country. Thank you Gray Lady. Thank you most of all for ethical, superb journalism.
Lisa K (Chicago)
In what other world does a person get millions and millions in compensation for sexually harassing and humiliating dozens of women.
Roberto Muina (Palm Coast, FL)
And this guy shook hands with the Pope!! He's proof that Inquisition was right and Dinosaurs aren't extinguished. Poor Bergoglio didn't know who he was shaking hands with!!
Jeffrey Meyer (Poway, CA)
Not only a sexual predator, but a contemptuous, overbearing, insulting excuse for a representative of the Fourth Estate in the United States. Should have been fired years ago.
HapinOregon (Southwest corner of Oregon)
A cup of coffee sez he will be picked up by a syndicate and his books will continue to be publishes and bought. Those that think as he and like him are legion.

I'm more interested to learn what the younger Murdochs will be doing...
Pvbeachbum (Fla)
Tucker Carlson is a great choice to replace O'Reilly..he's young, intelligent, and can make mincemeat out of democrats who dare to come on his show. FOX will continue to be the #1 Cable News channel for centrists as Republicans. Morning Joe is really losing it....Mica cannot stop bashing Trump, so much so that I cannot bear to hear any more of her and Joe's blather. Bad. Maddow gives me migraine headaches with her screaming half-truths or half-stories. Sorry to see O'Reilly go, but he will not be forgotten, and the right will continue to hear from him in the very near future.
Leo (Left coast)
Once upon a time Tuck made the mistake of having Jon Stewart on Crossfire. Stewart singlehandedly killed the show, literally -- Crossfire was taken off the air within a few weeks after Stewart's appearance where he successfully made the case that Carlson and his ilk were "bad for America." It was about that time Carlson gave up the bow tie. Jon was one of the few who could best Oreilly on his own turf. I hope Carlson brings Stewart on again. It's one of the few times we get to witness decency, civility, and intelligence on conservative TV.
buck (indianapolis)
The arrogance of cash and power is cancerous. That will not change. The only change will be a new face as chief talking head. Might even be a woman. But the system won't change.
Bob (My President Tweets)
I bet Billy now wishes prostitution was legal.
Imagine the savings.
Robert F (Seattle)
It's as if there is some kind of war on sexual predators.
Ceterum censeo (Los Angeles)
Lest we forget: That nefarious, hideous old man had millions of fervent enablers in all those dense Americans who religiously tuned in to his nonsense every week night.
David (NYC)
Spicer's replacement
Roger O'Malley (San Diego, CA)
The charges against O'Reilly even if true are are bag of nothings. Face it lefties like the NY Times hated him all along and wanted to bring him down. I suspect that Fox having lost its shepherd will also lose as a big chunk of the populace and will drop in ratings and political influence.
Berkeleyalive (Berkeley,CA)
Sooner or later, men will learn that women do not need to put up with their comments and innuendo in order to get hired or retain their positions. Happily, I am here to report that not all men are troglodytes. Evolution works in office or cave!
Scott Young (Schroon Lake , NY.)
Jemu Greene please! She got schooled in debate and got revenge by calling racism. Same o same o. FOX is done and just another Trump hating CNN.
ciccseven (East Hampton NY)
Dear NYT's,

Really! This is Front Page, Upper Left, News for today? Is nothing else going on in the Big Wide World?

Love 7
Jack (NJ)
So the ultimate goal I suspect is to try to take out Fox News and remove all dialogue and conflicting thoughts to the left. Already people can't speak at schools. It is a shame. Bill Clinton, Barney zFrank-- no problem.
SM (PA)
His behavior is reprehensible. I wish I could make a witticism about his claims of innocence, but I can't. The saddest thing about this is, the general workplace situation for women won't change much (esp. at Fox) and this cretin walks away with $25 million, as though HE were the victim. Sad.
jerry breshin (naples)
The good news for O'Reilly is that he may get a choice position in the Trump administration such as Director of Women's Affairs.
Pat B. (Blue Bell, Pa.)
I see many commenters bemoaning the fact that this was a pure bottom-line play for FOX News v an exercise in moral courage. That's almost certainly true- but it doesn't diminish the accomplishment. A free press did great reporting; a large percentage of the population made their voices heard; advertisers pulled their financial support. In other words, democracy at work. It's pretty rare that a large, public corporation does anything to hurt its own bottom-line- only public pressure brought to bear can accomplish that. Boycotts work. What with gerrymandering, voter suppression and lobbyists owning our Congress- this is one of the few ways that all Americans can still make their presence felt and their voices heard.
Occupy Government (Oakland)
Truly scary to hear O'Reilly's viewership actually increased with the revelation of sexual harassment charges. Add to that the news that racism played a bigger part in the election than authoritarianism and... we are a nation in decline.

Unless we put some serious resources into this problem and fix it, American won't be anyplace to bring up children.
Slim Pickins (The Internet)
MONEY MONEY MONEY is what it's all about.

It was market forces that forced out Bill O'Reilly and not the morals of the powers that be at Fox as advertisers jumped ship. Suddenly the man was a liability.

A lot of the people who regularly watch Fox news spout off about freedom and patriotism while Fox did not care one bit about the women who suffered this disgusting behavior systematically throughout the years. Fox only cared about the MONEY that O'Reilly brought in, not the rights of women who worked there. If I were a Fox watcher, I would hope that this fact alone made me begin to wonder about my sources for news.
Blackjack Carroll (Santa Maria, CA)
What fuels an implosion? Projection (displaced blame and responsibility), denial and the prospect of collapse. All happening to Fox. And the catalyst? O'Reilly.
Anna (Brooklyn)
I agree that sexual harassment is an important issue, and that Fox News seems to be rotten through and through, but is this story really worth of front-page news for two days in a row??

Likewise, I applaud the Times's investigative work, and am glad to see that such journalism can still make a difference. But would the Times give such attention to any other individual at any other network? At this point it feels a little like gloating, and it is taking attention away from other important stories both home and abroad.
Susan Fitzgerald (Portland)
Journalism 101: Names are news. O'Reilly is a name. Fox is a brand name. When they do wrong, it's news. When they hide wrongdoing, it's news.
Esteban (Los Angeles)
Here's an inside tip.

For decades Fox has had a well-earned reputation in Hollywood of running a Human Resources Department and phalanx of employment attorneys whose mission is to cover up the egotistical demands of managers who engage not only in sexist behavior, but also serious racial harassment and discrimination at the Los Angeles studio. An enterprising journalist could dig out all the old lawsuits and look at the evidence contained in deposition transcripts over the past 30 or so years.
ek swen (Brevard, Fl)
So where was all the similar outrage when David Letterman was being charged with the same things? Why was CBS given a pass while Fox is held to the fire? Could it possibly be because Fox is conservative and CBS is liberal? Media bias anyone?
Steve (New Hampshire)
It is an administrative decision based on whether the show is viable as a vehicle for advertising - that is all. Evidently, Letterman's affair was not perceived to be as egregious as sexual harassment, nor was their a hugely publicized settlement. Perhaps Letterman's behavior was less pervasive nor a longterm pattern of abuse the way O'Reilly's was, nor was Letterman as much of a jerk as O'Reilly.

This has nothing to do with liberal or conservative, nor "bias". It's all about the Benjamins.
David dennis (Michigan)
Unlike O'Reilly, David Letterman went on the air and confessed his wrong doing. That took character. Something O'Reilly lacks.
johnny d (conestoga,PA)
No, you fool, they are not the same. Letterman apologized, and both parties said the tryst was CONSENSUAL.
Meg8 (LA)
Let there be NO thought that this represents a culture shift and a moral reckoning at Fox. It is about money, and nothing else. The ethical response is at least 15 years late. And we have a President who is an apologist for this predation which I believe will be shown to be much wider than we currently know. Good times.
jta (brooklyn, ny)
I wonder if Fox is merely posturing to demonstrate to the Brits that they are fit to acquire controlling interest in Skye news in the UK. If and when this happens, we'll have the same dangerous venom injected into the British psyche.

The Murdochs are the real threat to truth and democratic ideals. O'Reilly's dismissal doesn't change that equation. Fox will simply find another messenger to deliver their propaganda.
Will (Chicago)
Funny how many of Trumps supporters ended up siding with people on the wrong side of the moral code.
nytcalif (calif)
I have but one question for this audience. How many of you, especially women, who think O'Reilly was a predator who needed to be fired, also voted for Trump?
David B (Texas)
Now, if only voters would have expressed the same kind sentiment in November's election....
LG (Flint MI)
"Unfounded" claims don't pay over 13 million dollars to women whose claims you say are baseless. The only thing baseless is the depths to which Bill O'Reilly and Fox News will sink to protect their own and their ratings.
david (<br/>)
Is it only I who thinks that 25 million severance [see story below this one] being paid to someone who has committed sexual abuse is excessive.
If Joe Lunchbox misbehaves he is fired with NO severance.
Cheryl (Yorktown)
Wet blanket here: his absence doesn't make FOX a kinder, gentler and/or more fact based network. It is still hawking venom - and still attacking Clinton and President Obama.
And we still have a President who has blatantly objectified women - and attacked minorities when convenient to attracting= supporters . .
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, Ca)
As long as there were only one fact based network, what would be the point of having any others. Cable television with its thousands of channels becomes totally illogical if fact was what mattered, which is why there aren't any anymore.

The torch of hawking venom has recently been passed to MSNBC with the coming of Trump, thereby essentially making Fox superfluous anyway.
Joan Kulikowski (Monroe, CT)
How many homeless children are in this country and $13 million is spent on O'Reilly because he is a lecher.
AccordianMan (Lefty NYC)
What are you prepared to do about it?
Jagan (Portland, OR)
Would to interesting to see which democratic operative and mole at Fox News through which they will take down Hannity!....
Bill Clinton who actually did have physical relations with many women will for sure have a good laugh on his get out of jail free card from the leftist media establishment and feminists !
JP (CT)
Seem to remember Clinton facing numerous actions and in fact impeachment absent a conviction. It was in the news and everything.
Rick Hoag (Westport Ct)
Sooooo
It's ok in your book to sexually harass women except if you re a democrat
Chris Dawson (Ithaca, NY)
Seems men like this take themselves down over time. Bill Clinton. Roger Ailes. Bill Cosby. Bill O'Reilly. No moles needed. Their own arrogance and love of exerting power over others is enough.
Dallas138 (Texas)
Let's not get cocky here. O'Reilly was forced out because sexual harassment in the workplace is no longer cool, not even at Fox Noise.

The content of O'Reilly's broadcasts was never a problem to them--which is a problem for the country. Lies, hate and Soviet-style propaganda are still the norm there.

I'm sure Russia Today or National Hate Radio would welcome Mr. O'Reilly's voice
Activist Bill (Mount Vernon, NY)
@ Dallas138 - Is sexual harassment in government offices by elected officials permitted? It seemed that way when Bill Clinton was President.
Dallas138 (Texas)
1. Clinton's presidency ended nearly 20 years ago, and I did say "no longer."
2. Clinton was a youthful, charismatic guy whne he was in office. Trump is an aged, uncharismatic, arrogant buffoon with all the sex appeal of an over-the-hill aardvark. Only hundred dollar bills will make him attractive, and even then, only to the most die-hard of gold diggers.
3. If I recall correctly, Clinton's antics led ultimately to his impeachment. I don't recall ANY Republican office-holder since then who has engaged in such (as Clinton's Republican tormentor Henry Hyde put it) "youthful indiscretions," and suffered consequences anywhere nearly as drastic.
KMJ (Twin Cities)
Fox News will find another belligerent, disrespectful bully to feed daily red meat to its audience. And their audience will continue to eagerly devour Fox's foul brew of misinformation, distortions, hysteria, paranoia, and propaganda. O'Reilly will make millions from his next book. And nobody will learn anything from any of this.
Tornadoxy (Ohio)
An audience of older white men who, for the most part, have lost their consumer power. The average age of these folks has to be over 60...bad juju for advertisers.
Skeptic (Cambridge UK)
I've seen a photo of Bill O'Reilly shaking Pope Francis's hand. Did the Pope wash afterwards with antiseptic soap? I hope so!
Neal (New York, NY)
Naturally, O'Reilly turned to the institution that not only covers up for sex criminals but spends big money to protect them.
Jack (US)
Jehmu Greene is a perfect example of how men cannot possibly win when accused of sexual harassment, no matter whether they are guilty or innocent. Jehmu claims to have been harassed by O'Reilly but then accepted a position as a network contributor and became a regular on his show. How many choose to have closer contact with someone who has harassed them? She jokes with O'Reilly about breaking his bank, but when he jokes back, he's accused of being inappropriate. Why would she make a bet where the winner pays for the two to have dinner together if he had harassed her? This is not the behavior of a woman who has been harassed. O'Reilly was smart to avoid that dinner - who knows what he may have been charged with if he took her to dinner?

I do not know if O'Reilly is innocent or guilty. Unlike many, I will not pre-judge. I will say that the "evidence" presented thus far is as flimsy as could be. These protests are not because of sexual harassment; they are because the protestors don't like O'Reilly's viewpoint, and any excuse will do.
Lucy Katz (The West)
You are not a woman and you do not know what it is like to be harassed or preyed upon. In an organization that condones such behavior and nurtures giant male egos, women don't have a lot of power so they put up with leering, sexual comments and cringe-inducing language from the Bill O'Reilly's of the world. They continue with their work and try to fend off the lech as best they can without complaining or destroying their careers. I know very few women who have not been sexually harassed in one way or another in their lives. Everyone reacts in a different way.

It takes a very courageous woman to come forward in a hostile environment like Fox News because so much is at stake for her. The serious imbalance of power and a creep who threatens to use his power against his victims if they complain is the oldest trick in the book for sexual predators.
Neal (New York, NY)
Most or all of O'Reilly's accusers worked side by side with him at Fox News and likely shared his political and social views, putting up with his offensive behavior to protect their jobs as well as the Fox "brand".

I'm sure you never prejudge except when you're prejudging Jehmu Greene and any other woman who dares to call a foul.
Lynn (Greenville, SC)
"harassed by O'Reilly but then accepted a position as a network contributor "

Well, Jack, it's not as if harassment is that uncommon. What assurance does a woman have that there won't be someone just as bad or worse harassing her in her next place of employment?
Joey (TX)
'James Murdoch stopped to answer a question about the decision, saying..." Everything that we said in our statement is all you need to know.”'

Actually, James Murdoch, you don't decide what we need to know. We decide for ourselves what we need to know, and so your statement is emblematic of the cultural problems at Fox "News". You ignore womens' prerogative to be respected.

We need to know the full extent to which the Fox News network attempted to diminish and coverup O'Reilly's repulsive behavior, and the extent to which it was tolerated. Then we can decide (again, for ourselves) whether your brand has any real value.
Nasty Man aka Gregory (Boulder Creek, Calif.)
What? Did they use super glue to put your face to the TV fox?
Hanna (Richmond)
This is the best news I've heard all week. It's *only* been 13 years since the unforgettable falafel-gate incident. What was the rush, she asked sarcastically.
Michael Dubinsky (<br/>)
If he was poor he would have ended up in jail.
Len (Dutchess County)
--- and if he were a democrat he end up running for first gentleman.
Chicago Guy (Chicago, Il)
Hard to believe Bill is leaving considering he embodied everything that Fox News stands for: human warmth, caring, empathy, fairness, courtesy, civility, integrity, and above all sexual equality.

It's just really hard to believe.
Lea (Kansas City)
If you are being sincere, then i agree. great show.
BerlinSally (Columbus Oh)
Why, oh why, are there no contractual clauses that eliminate the possibility of a big payout against those who commit acts of sexual or racial harassment? If "the star" knows that the money will be his/hers, then there is no incentive to change personal behavior. Money talks, or so we are told. After all, the Murdochs spent lots of money to get O'Reilly and to keep him. Even with his departure, their names are besmirched because the money that he takes with him is a kind of endorsement of him and his actions. Oh, your faux outrage is just so...faux.
Susan Wilkes (Atlanta, GA)
The firing of Bill O'Reilly is an example of the right thing happening for the wrong reasons. In most (admittedly, and unfortunately, not all) workplaces, an employee like Bill O'Reilly would have been fired long ago for misconduct, particularly if his bad behavior resulted in employer liability (claims paid) to victims.

I give Fox News little to no credit for finally firing Bill O'Reilly. It did not do so because it was the right or principled or moral thing to do. It did so only because the company's risk/benefit analysis changed. For the first time, O'Reilly's advertisers walked in mass numbers. For the first time, O'Reilly's lecherous and intimidating behavior was likely to lose Fox a major deal that it wanted in the U.K. For the first time, Fox faced shareholder liability and government sanctions for fraud in failing to disclose the Ailes and O'Reilly settlements. Finally, I suspect that the excellent law firm retained by the Murdochs gave them an earful about the multiple adverse consequences that would flow to FOX from keeping O'Reilly.

What we have yet to hear, and may never hear, from the Murdochs is exactly what they plan to do to change the culture at Fox.
Kelly (Omaha)
I believe that this is a good thing. I believe in free speech, and I believe that Mr. O'Reilly has the right to say whatever he wants in any public forum that he chooses. The fact is, his ouster is caused by his disrespect and apparent harassment of women, not his politic views. For once I find myself applauding Fox News for doing the right thing and removing him. Though I do feel that most of that applause should be directed at the advertisers who decided that they would not support a man who was disrespectful of those around him. I also find it funny that there are very few people at Fox News who even seem sad at his departure. From all accounts, he was not a well-liked man there, and I suspect that it isn't just women at Fox who are happy to see him go.
steve (ocala, fl)
The O'Reilly audience will stay with Fox as they like their bubble and don't want to hear any opposing ideas that might be true.
LA Lawyer (Los Angeles)
If Rupert had any guts, he would not pay O'Reilly millions of dollars of separation pay, but would affirmatively sue him for damaging the reputation of Fox News (although he might have difficulty proving the value of its reputation in the first instance).
Susan Wilkes (Atlanta, GA)
If you have not previously seen it, watch the video of Phil Donahue's years-ago appearance on Bill O'Reilly's show.

You will want to cheer as you watch a totally-unimpressed Donahue laugh at O'Reilly's "act:" his shouting, interrupting, threatening, denigrating, and finger-pointing. Donahue leaned in and said, "You don't frighten me, Billy Boy." It made O'Reilly absolutely apoplectic!
Robert Tortorelli (New York)
O'Reilly said it was “tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims."
Yes, his claims of innocence are indeed unfounded.
Ajab (Tustin, CA)
William F. Buckley O'Reilly -- Operation Mockingbird asset.
Keevin Berman (Cleveland)
Between this story and the Russian revelation, the need for a free press is evident. In this country its not against the to (insert an act or crime) it's against the law to get caught.
Jay Carvajal (Dallas texas)
So glad to see that Punk out and all of their previous journalist leaving that source of fake news, racist remarks and christian hypocrisy it will be great the day that they close doors.
GirlAuthentic (Colorado)
This is not an example of a corporation putting a woman's rights above the bottom line -- this is all about the bottom line. If the advertisers had not left, O'Reilly would still be there.
p wilkinson (guadalajara, mexico)
This is a pragmatic decision and Rupert Murdoch ceding the reigns to James shows - thanks advertisers and reporters and women who are finally gaining some momentum. Of course any media network thinks money first so the loss of advertisers mattered to Fox. They have obviously no interest in a decent respectful workplace. They are selling garbage news and they are garbage people.
Sandy (<br/>)
So Fox is going to replace the O'dious O'Reilly with the uber preppy [St George's School in Newport RI, a prep school which has had quite a bit of trouble with sexual assault problems; graduated from Trinity College Hartford CT, another preppy bastion] and Socially Registered Tucker Carlson? Is putting a classier face on Fox going to make it all better?
Ad Man (Kensington, MD)
Sexual harassment - Bill O'Reilly gets fired... Bill Clinton gets re-elected.
Barbara (<br/>)
Bill Clinton was re-elected before the Lewinsky situation came out, FYI. Anyway, two wrongs don't make a right. Trump was elected after many character flaws of his were revealed, such as lying, groping, and stealing. I didn't vote for him, but a lot of people did. So what is your point? Is it that perhaps O'Reilly should run for President?
Lea (Kansas City)
Exactly! Which is why i switched to Republican & never looked back. O'Reilly's show fact finding & intelligent
Neal (New York, NY)
If you're an adult who doesn't know the difference between consensual and non-consensual sexual relations, please turn yourself in at your local police precinct today. Thanks.
Ward Jones (Houston)
He was and has been a predator of women. If he wasn't rich, he'd be in jail. I feel sorry for Martin Dugard, who wrote all his books, but drew little if any attention. Used, like so many, by a wealthy egotist.
rl (nyc)
Those books are awful.
Neal (New York, NY)
Martin Dugard was well compensated for helping O'Reilly rewrite history to suit his tastes, like a character out of "1984" and its Ministry of Truth.
Midwest Josh (Middle America)
"He was and has been a predator of women. If he wasn't rich, he'd be in jail."

Ditto for Bill Clinton.
Jessie (<br/>)
Those who gleefully watch the Bill O'Reilly's of the world and cheer his bullying and demeaning rhetoric and style are also culpable. There is an audience for Fox News and that is why they continue on the air. There is an audience who looks for a network that gives them license to ignore the facts, to humiliate women, to unleash their anger and bigotry -- like the schoolyard bully who seeks to bolster his own self loathing by demeaning others.
neal (Westmont)
I wouldn't say it's fair to call NPR a bully
Chris (San Antonio)
There is a forum for all kinds of people to mock and degrade those who disagree with them, regardless of their political views. Anyone looking at this comment section can plainly see that there is more mocking, more dehumanizing, and more hatred of those with opposing views in our society right now, than there is respect, tolerance and grace.

It's because we have become a nation of enemies who must be destroyed for our own side to prosper, instead of a nation of fellow citizens who respect the rights of one another to pursue their own public policy approaches and solutions to the problems they deem most important.

And the media on both the left and the right in this country could not possibly be causing more damage to our society than they would if the entire industry was run directly by ISIS.
Herman Krieger (Eugene, Oregon)
Is Rupert Murdoch the next one to go?
Yvonne (Dwyer)
But he will replaced with an equally nasty human being.
Maria Schildkamp (Palm Harbor, Florida)
Bill O'Reilly should be fined after being fired, he should have no right to receive millions on top of his embarrassing behaviour.
Iamcynic1 (Ca.)
While dumping O'Reilly and Ailes for their egregious behavior toward women should be applauded,I think the Murdoch brothers had a less virtuous motive. They were looking ahead.Getting rid of the dinosaurs and bringing in a younger viewer who they can then program with their outrageous distortions of the news.Young Republican women and millennials will replace O'Reilly's aging white men.I doubt this will have any effect on raising my daughters wage from 75% of what the men make to parity, but the news is "sensational." and we love "sensational."
Max Lewy (New york, NY)
He is not the only one who thinks that grabing women's genital, and braging about it, is OK!
Hrao (NY)
So Get Rid of this guy? How about Trump - he is doing more damage and hurting more women and others? He is worse than this O'Reilly person?
Victor (Asher)
Did you ask to get rid of Presidents Bill Clinton or Jack Kennedy for predatory sexual behavior againt women?
Lidgie (nyc)
When you think of the good things he has done with his talent--such as his fine series Legends and Lies, last fall and winter, dramatizing the Revolutionary period--it is tragic to think that he has not only undermined his own career but unconscionably hurt other people.
Ken L. (Brookline, Mass.)

Not until the article in the New York Times on April 01. If not for this article, no one would have known all this story surrounding Bill O'Reilly. And, it took 5 women's complaints, almost 40 odd big time advertisers to pull out for the Murdoch family to arrive at a decision to fire their star TV personality.
Watching the 'No Spin Zone' program, you get the impression that Mr.Reilly is always right. You cannot argue with him. He will find a way to say you are wrong.
One thing is clear here. No one is indispensable.

Good. He had no friends. Everyone hated him. Clue: He was the same jerk in Catholic high school as he is today. I truly hope younger women will cease taking this abuse from men like him.

This story brings to light many links between conservatism, chauvinism and machism. There is much in the idea that much of what is backwards in American is not about race, class, or politics, but about sex and gender roles: the "nanny state", "protecting" America against the outside world versus "nurturing" economic development.

We all know the real motive for the Fox Ruse News move was money. But hey, at least this case will be a lesson to other such work places and that is the REAL good I see in all of this. I'm proud of the brave women who came forward. I know from personal experience that is a very hard thing to do, it can and does ruin careers. It did mine when I came forward. The industry the victim works in will get word around that the victim is a liability and blacklist the victim surreptitiously as a trouble-maker. The victim then loses on many fronts for many years. I am glad these women won this one... no matter the company's real motive for letting the abuser go.

People! Come on! It's Fox News, for goodness' sake. When they proclaim some new 'devastating' story, we all just laugh. If we are even listening. They haven't cleaned house, they just threw somebody to the wolves. Rupert took so long to toss this guy because the income outweighed the expense. The calculus went the other way once the advertisers left, let alone the increasing numbers of victims. Stop tuning in to Fox and they will wither and die.

I am glad he is out. What a creep. But, I expected something to happen to him. A couple of weeks a video of him kept playing where he was calling Putin a "Killer." I just expect such disrespect to Putin would not be approved on RT and would not be approved on Fox. We are I n a new America.

Two powerful sexual predators down and one to go! I congratulate Attorney Lisa Bloom on her dogged persistence in exposing this modern-day Elmer Gantry for what he truly is--a pompous man who abused his power to sexually assault and harass women while preaching morality to the rest of us. But, like Roger Ailes before him, Bill O'Reilly is walking away with the equivalent of a golden parachute rather than the jail time that you and I would face if we had those charges against us. You can just imagine how Mr. O'Reilly would rant and rave if it were a "liberal" who was kicked out the door with millions in his pocket.

Ratings notwithstanding, O'Reilly's viewers were not necessarily wedded to him as a person. His views are widely shared by the audience, but his style had become increasingly grating in recent years. The newly announced programming line-up maintains Fox News Channel's general approach to news commentary starting at 5:00 Eastern. Eric Bolling already honed his skills on Saturday's Cashing In and Tucker Carlson will hold down the fort at 8:00. My guess is that Fox News will lose very few viewers over these changes.

That TV box -- it can sell things.
That commercial force is easily strong enough overcome moral force.
He was forced off the air because his image on the TV box could sell as many things as it did before.
But was it the moral force that did it?
Perhaps.
Better question: Was it the moral force that got stronger or was it the commercial force that got weaker?
I tend to think it was the latter. Network TV is dying. It is dying because the people who watch it are dying. Death negates growth. Without growth, things die.
His TV death was only notable because it seemed to happen so quickly. But it was only quick in the end. The immorality continued for years.
You see, the moral force is weaker than the commercial force.

Mr. O'Reilly often complained about arrogance and routinely put down anyone that disagreed with his world view. How ironic that now Mr. Arrogance has been outed as a serial sexual harasser of women and was fired. Of course he walks away a multi-millionaire...as is often the case. What is disgusting is that Fox obviously knew about his behavior (and that of Roger Ailes) for years, but did nothing about it. Fox will still have to do a lot of work to convince people that they really are changing the culture of the network. Changing much of their reporting and commentary will be part of that effort. You can't continue to let people on the network make the types of comments O'Reilly continually did and have any credibility. That being said, there obviously is a significant audience for the arrogant and disparaging commentary that O'Reilly trafficked in - and I find that discouraging.
MM (New York)
In response to the allegations against O'Reilly, and the NYT's reporting of same, Trump reportedly said "I don't think Bill did anything wrong". Clearly, Trump was not formulating his conclusion based on the investigation overseen by the law firm Paul Weiss, commissioned by Fox, after which O'Reilly was summarily terminated.

Trump simply decided that either 1) the women at Fox had all made things up, or 2) that even if everything they said was true he still didn't think O'Reilly had done anything wrong.

This confirms to me that he still believes everything he said in the Access Hollywood tape, has never matured past that point, and has no remorse.

And this is our President.

What I find amazing is O'Reilly's ability to deny any wrong doing even though women have been paid off to keep quiet. He has no remorse. Now, he will get a big chunk of change and take his act on the road. Or write a book about how wonderful he is. Disturbing. But I am glad they got rid of him finally.

"This is a seismic cultural shift, when a corporation puts a woman’s rights above the bottom line,” said Wendy Walsh, a former guest on Mr. O’Reilly’s show, “The O’Reilly Factor,” who made allegations against him."

But the corporation did no such thing. O'Reilly's criminal behavior was losing advertising money by the boatload. The bottom line appears to be exactly what led the Murdoch brothers to order O'Reilly's demise, when human decency could not.

I do not subscribe to Cable TV or Satellite TV. I get my news off broadcast antennas mounted on top of Sutro Tower in San Francisco, and, of course, from the venerable NYT. PBS (KQED in San Francisco Bay Area) is my favorite channel both for TV and Radio.

I was thus happily and mercifully saved from the crude language and insults of Fox News and many other rabid news broadcasters and commentators calling themselves conservatives.

Mr. O'Reilly had, therefore, absolutely no influence on me as a well informed citizen. He did, however, succeed, in misinforming and misguiding millions of people with irrational and bigoted minds.

Capitalism makes it possible to sell stuff (O'Reillly included) which would be considered unfit for human consumption in some other (and civilized) countries.

Good riddance!
Jack (US)
You never watch Fox News, but claim to know that O'Reilly used "crude language and insults" and was " misinforming and misguiding millions of people with irrational and bigoted minds"? Since you claim to never watch Fox, how could you possibly know what O'Reilly actually did and did not say? How could you know whether he was "misinforming and misguiding millions of people with irrational and bigoted minds." Perhaps the irrational and bigoted mind is your own since you make judgments based on someone else's opinion that you merely adopted as your own.

If I wrote that the NYT (just as an example) is misguided and employs bigoted people who write nothing but obscene stories and lies, you might disagree with me. If I made that statement but also said that I had never read the NYT, you would rightly call me uninformed and ignorant. Your statements fall into that category.

The NYT did its typical fine job in reporting this story from start 'till present, but, all of the facts were pretty much available and already reported before the Times did its compilation and report. The most damaging evidence might be the tape recording of O'Reilly sex talking an employee and that was old news. Also, many of the women he abused and berated had already come out with allegations and lawsuits. The sum of money, 13 million dollars, and the embarrassment attendant with that pay out, seems to be the leveraging item that drove Fox and Friends to cut ties with dirty old Billy. they , for certain, were painfully aware of the amount of money it cost to foster a pervert in the prime time slot for their empire and were fine with it, until the rest of the world caught wind of the cost. Like Imus, Falwell, Ailes, Swaggart and a host of other abusers, he will return after the storm to accuse his accusers and reporters and play the victim. Some less ethical venue will pick him up. Or at least some venue with similar ethics to Fox and a greater need for cash.

Debbie R (<br/>)
There is poetic justice in having the NY Times, a paper whose legitimacy O'Reilly repeatedly attacked, play a part in bringing him down, but sadly, the toxic mindset he promoted is very much alive and well. Fox wasn't the only one to bow down to O'Reilly's success. Many people granted him a legitimacy and seriousness he didn't deserve, from President Obama, to late night talk show hosts, who were happy to kibbitz with him on their shows, including Colbert; once he went to the Late Show.
His attitude towards women is of a piece with the rest of his bullying personality, and it's sad that only now has he become too toxic to have a platform.

And yet Trump, who publically and vocally admits to sexual assault as his right, is in the White House with his family, cronies and billionaire enablers. How is it only a problem when advertisers flee at network and not with people in power victimize as a lifestyle? America is sooo messed up.
AccordianMan (Lefty NYC)
NYT: Why is this on the front page news?

Where is the NYT's article on the Trump administration taking action to prevent girls from being subjected to FGM in the U.S.?

O'Reilly is his own worse enemy - I don't feel sorry for him. He is a target and should have taken a hint from the Marine Corp's hymn "keep your honor clean". However, I always wonder with these sort of things....Do these women listen to Howard Stern, or other "entertainers",
i.e. Hip-Hop, Rap musicians, etc. who regularly degrade women? If so, please explain the role morality.

Speaking of morality, I'd make book that 75% of the folks commenting here are big fans of Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton, a proven womanizer but he get a pass. Why is that? That's a rhetorical question. We all know the answer.
Mary Louise (Los Angeles, CA)
It is all vile behavior, but Clinton had friends and was always charming. Both men and women loathed O'Reilly. Clinton was nice to everyone. O'Reilly was an ass in high school in the 60s.

Several years ago I overheard my doctor supportively repeating some of O'Reilly's nasty comments about the 'war on Christmas'. I changed doctors. After reading that Charles Schwab donated a large sum to the Trump inauguration fund, I plan to close my account with his company.

Words and actions have consequences. Sadly, too many don't comprehend that until it hits their bottom line.
Elizabeth Bennett (Arizona)
Given that a woman is eleven times more likely to experience domestic violence in the US than woman in other developed countries, it's not surprising that O'Reilly got away with sexual harassment for years. Look at how hard the Murdoch family fought to keep O'Reilly, in spite of paying out $13 million in settlements to the women he harassed! It was only the drop in advertising revenue that caught their attention.

According to stats in Huff Post, a woman is beaten every 9 seconds in America. We have a huge problem with woman abuse in this country, but seem to lack the will to take action against the perpetrators. The post-abuse medical bills alone should be a motivator: The university of Minnesota estimated in 1995 that the cost to treat victims of domestic violence every year is in excess of $5 billion.

America is a dangerous place for women, so it's no surprise that it took the Murdochs so long to terminate Bill O'Reilly's contract for behavior that is common in the workplace.
Peter Zenger (N.Y.C.)
I don't have any sympathy for the Trump style blow-hard called Bill O’Reilly, but it is Interesting, that the one time that the New York Times managed to successfully pursue an investigative campaign, it was against an employee at a competitor.

How about going after some employees of the Mafia, the U.S. Congress, MS 13, the Mexican Drug Cartels, or the Big Banks?

I've often wondered about these women who claim sexual harassment- I feel that if there is truth in those claims, any monetary settlements should not be accepted. If any of them accepted it, then they are a fraud.

13 million in hush money goes a long way in convincing me that the allegations were serious. Don't blame the victims here. These women hired lawyers that want to be paid and have to get new employment and...you know what?
They don't really owe you an explanation.
Cira (Miami, FL)
I’ll never forget how women in support of Donald Trump responded after it was discovered he’d been cropping women all his life – they simply said “that’s what men do.” For years, women had to accept sexual harassment in the workplace just to keep their jobs. What can we expect when colleges and universities failed to conduct any investigation with regards to sexual assault to women? Sexual harassment violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

For years, FOX News knew of Bill O’Reilly’s “lascivious behavior” toward women but in fell in deaf ears since he was the “favorite star” of the conservative network station that generated millions in advertising. He was fired because there were too many people protesting in front of Fox News and when advertisers discovered what O'Reilly was doing, they could no longer sponsor his show and Mr. Murdoch couldn’t afford to lose all that revenue.

In America, politicians hypocritically raised their voices to condemn atrocities committed to women that live abroad but not in this country. While Congressional Republicans continue to ignore the sexual abuse that’s being committed to women; there'll be many O’Reilly’s sexually harassing women for years until something drastic is done.
Jack (US)
Congratulations on being a supporter of women's rights. Now let's hear you speak out against genital mutilation done to young Muslim girls.

Why do feminists not speak out about this atrocity? I don't believe for half a second that there would not be an outcry if this were a Christian custom and was being done by leaders of Christian churches. Yet there is total silence about these young girls, often American citizens, who are being mutilated in such a vicious manner.
Shirley Eis (Stamford, CT)
Let's Stop being "politically correct" as Bill O'Reilly himself might say. Bill O'Reilly got fired not for sexual harassment but because he had become a liability to FOX and the Murdoch's.
There was as once again O'Reilly might himself say, some downside to keeping him and most of all defending him.
If they had wanted to clean house he would have been "eased" out when Roger Ailes was shown the doo.r.
Nevertheless, congratulation to FOX for moving in the right direction. Of course, we still son't know what his severance will be.
Mary C. (NJ)
O'Reilley's ouster is not altogether good news.

Consider: Now that there are widespread allegations of sexual predation against him, O'Reilly is now fully qualified to run for President of the U.S.A. And given the loyalty of his followers, he could win despite his public defamation! Haven't we seen it happen already?
Iggy (Montclair, NJ)
Paul Weiss likely advised the board of directors of 21st Century Fox that they would be breaching their duty of care to the company if they retained an employee who continuously violates the law (as evidenced by $13 million of payoffs to women employees). At the end of the day, it is always a cost-benefit analysis.
KJ (Tennessee)
Alec Baldwin does a better O'Reilly than O'Reilly. Fox could sign him up and their audience wouldn't know the difference.

Face-to-face interviews with Donald could be tricky, though.

I am in complete agreement with those here who are lauding The New York Times and the excellent journalism that brought this out into the open.

Now, I hope that the Times is still behind the scenes pursuing:

Fox News is one thing. The country is another.

Won't miss him, though media treatment of more liberal workplace horndogs has not seemed quite as hysterical. Meanwhile, NYTimes breathlessly fires opening salvo to take out whoever replaces O'Reilly at FNC in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ....
GRH (New England)
Exactly. When David Letterman was engaging in both sexual harassment and affairs with subordinates, the NY Times and their compatriots were mostly focused on the blackmail attempt instead of Letterman's behavior himself. On the other hand, unlike O'Reilly, Letterman did come out and apologize on air. People also think that women in power are different. Just speaking anecdotally, this is not necessarily the case. In my younger days, I worked for a female-led nonprofit, and the female CEO had more than 1 affair with married men, including her subordinates. The favoritism she displayed toward one of the subordinates and the department he ran had incredibly corrosive impact on the entire organization. Certainly opened my eyes. The organization is a liberal nonprofit and predictably not a word from the NY Times on this.
Cynthia (Spokane Washington)
I am most disappointed in this attack on Mr. O'. Through the ages we have continued to twist and manipulate the meanings of other people's words. In truth, we do not know what's in their mind. I am a woman who has received many comments from men - and women, I might say, that could have been interpreted as inappropriate. However I am of the opinion that it's my job to confront them, overlook the comments, thank them if it is positive, or forget it. My job is to live above that whole sexuality harassment issue. If a woman is attractive and is noticed, it's no ones fault. It's the way it is.

I want Mr. O' to know I have always found him to be of sound character and very honest. Not perfect but honest. That should be respected, not criticized. And by the way ,I think he is also a very attractive man. Or is that entering in to the whole sexual harassment thing?
Respectfully,

Bill O'Reilly has been a very vocal advocate for the Wounded Warriors project and extremely generous to many charities. He has given his own money and raised enormous amounts of money for various causes. He will be judged by the good he has done throughout the years as will we all. Every single one of us has a good and bad side. I do not want to judge Bill O'Reilly as many people are doing on this New York Times comment board. I will let God be the final judge of him. We will one day all be judged accordingly.

No publicity is bad publicity. Fox news has received so much free publicity in the past few months that it is no wonder that it is the top rated cable network news outlet. Is it that or it has several people watching alternate news. I never watched Fox news in my entire life until this past year and I found a totally different perspective that an open minded person looking for a balance will find food for thought that is different than relying exclusively on other news networks. Bill O'Reilly was overrated and at times very annoying when he would invite someone on his show and not give them a chance to express their views that are different than his own. Fox news will do fine without O'Reilly, really. I don't think we have seen last of media giant O'Reilly. What will O'Reilly do in his post Fox years is the million dollar question? I am sure somehow he will continue to make millions and exercise his freedom of expression. He was seen taking blessings from the pope and probably made confessions to his own church priests. I have a feeling that in a year or so he will be back in business ready to fight for his future gig.

Fox News is Bill O'Reilly and Bill O'Reilly is Fox News. Fox has been slickly packaged Cartoon News for a very long time, boosted by the equally cartoon like opinions of political pundits from both sides who nod their heads in agreement. This cartoon like news comes by the hands of the wealthy who have made an impressive fortune controlling The Rest of Us. High time the truth came out, but to paraphrase a famous movie, "can we handle the truth"? That remains to be seen.

I'll never forget when Bill O'Reilly, on-air threatened with violence, war veteran -humanist talk show host, Phil Donahue. Phil at the time was commenting about how wrong it was to go into Iraq in '03. Now Phil has been proven correct.

O'Reilly a multi-deffererment taking, Ivy League hiding draft dodger was accusing Phil of bad mouthing America Military might and in turn O'Reilly's nephew who happened to be in the armed forces at the time. Donahue did no such thing. He only spoke the truth and the truth as a veteran who knows from experience.

O'Reilly was so far out of line and so threatening that staff rushed the much older and now frail Phil out of there for his own safety.

O'Reilly is a pig. He didn't care about his Nephew. He wanted to show how patriotic he was to his low info viewers as a way to deflect the fact he himself could not put it on the line for this country.

What a bullying coward pig. No offense to pigs.

The first time I saw O'Reilly scream "Shut up!" to a guest he disagreed was the last time I watched his show. No one captured the hypocrisy of Fox News better than this smug, self-important bloviator.
QuestionWhy (Highland NY)
So sad that it took so long for Fox Entertainment to realize that O'Reilly's personal entertainment conflicted with the Murdoch's business of making money.

It's more sad that Fox viewers ignore how Fox Entertainment, with shows like O'Reilly or Hannity, is not news. These viewers fail to notice that the Murdochs almost don't care who they hire or what that "talking head" says as long as it grabs viewers.

So-called conservative Americans are so sure that their political beliefs are more "moral" than the hated liberals however their TV personalities, business leaders and politicians seem to be constantly caught in various immoral scandals.

Enough of this holier than thou attitude by Fox and conservatives. As the adage goes...

O'Reilly's fate may promote better behavior on the part of powerful men. Knowing that this macho sexual harassment will not be accepted will induce people like O'Reilly to behave better out of fear. Hopefully, in the long run, this type of behavior will become less frequent not out of fear but because people have more respect for others.
Unfortunately O'Reilly does not seem to get it. It may be for legal reasons but I suspect he is actually sincere when he says there is nothing to the allegations (i.e. he thinks he did nothing wrong and is the victim of a vengeful cabal).
Mike Pod (Wilmington DE)

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? I see allegations but no proof or admission of guilt by O'Reilly.

It's one of the sacred principles of our criminal justice system that apparently doesn't apply to Bill because he isn't a radical liberal democratic journalist.

Bill O'Reilly reported the unbiased truth which was the key to his success.
pianowerk (uk)
Only wealthy people get to pay their way out of trouble. If bill felt he was innocent why not go in front of a jury and defend himself against the charges? Did he think he would get an unfair trial? After all he is a white person of a certain age - what could possibly go wrong?

Bill never gave the truth in his coverage, just spouted, shouted, biased alternative facts for so long that so many people got taken in by him and Fox.

I'm sure he'll issue a statement full of hope and innocence, and probably mention God at least once.
idnar (Henderson)
Settlements are what happened. Bill didn't want his dirty laundry aired.

Hi Pianowerk. You are making an allegation that "Bill never gave the truth in his coverage" Can you provide some examples?

You are right wealthy people can buy their way out of trouble but that doesn't mean that they are automatically guilty.
Citizen (Planet)
No matter. The man's ouster does not in anyway give any measure of respectability to Fox.
Jack (MA)
This changes nothing. Aside from the embarrassment (if he even has the decency to be embarrassed) that this will cause, what exactly will O'Reilly lose?

1) He is still incredibly wealthy. In addition to the fortune he has already accumulated, he will receive a massive severance payout from Fox while continuing to generate income from all of his books and speaking engagements.

2) O'Reilly will pop up on some other platform in no time, whether it is Breitbart or another of the wacko-alt-right organizations, there will be no shortage of other "media" (ha) outlets vying for his services. Sure, they probably won't be able to pay him quite as much as the $20 mil/year he made with Fox, but refer to point 1.

3) O'Reilly's core supporters and audience will remain his core supporters and audience, wherever he ends up landing. The average O'Reilly fan will continue to listen to him with an attitude of "yeah maybe he did a few things that were inappropriate, but I like his politics" while his most ardent fans will actually be GALVANIZED by this and believe "this is just another example of a smear campaign by leftist organizations seeking to silence BO, and we won't let it happen!"

4) Although he won't enjoy the platform that Fox news provides, regardless of where he ends up his every word will still be reported on by all the major outlets because, you know, he's Bill O'Reilly and this scandal only makes whatever he says even more salacious and "news" (ha) worthy.

SMH.
Jack990 (New York)
Send him to gulag this will solve the issue forever. This sort of collectivist mob mentality will lead the western society towards unfreedom and tyranny. A person is innocent unless and until he is proved to be guilty in the court of law. This is what protects the individual right within our democracies. This mob rule (banning free speech in college campus, social media trials, media trials) is more of a sign that liberal state as an institution is falling apart. And you sir/ma'am are part of the problem.
Jack (MA)
Pretty quick to pull the trigger on that knee-jerk, alarmist, straw-man response there, aren't you bud?

1) Did I ever say anywhere that his right to free speech should be impugned? Of course not, in fact I strongly support the right to free speech in all it's forms whether I agree with the speaker or not.
2) Did I ever say anywhere that he should go to jail without a fair trial? Please - I never even mentioned jail or legal punishment.

Since your reading comprehension is muddled by your hypersensitivity, let me explain further: The fact is that were NUMEROUS allegations made against BO - they were credible enough that his employer paid out over 13 MILLION to settle them out of court. Does that imply guilt? Not necessarily (but it does mean that Fox and BO chose NOT to try to clear his name in a court of law - that was THEIR choice.) Despite that choice, Fox feels that there is enough behind these - now public - allegations that they can no longer employ B.O. These are facts.
My point is simply this: The firing changes nothing (good or bad), it just makes BO (innocent or not) no longer Fox's problem. It sheds no light on what BO did or did not do, it does nothing to help the (alleged) victims, and it does nothing to diminish either O'Reilly's personal well-being or influence among his supporters who will blindly support him regardless.

How am I wrong? And how is my conclusion a "sign that the liberal state as an institution is falling apart?"
Jack990 (New York)
I don't care what 'implication' you draw from it. Has he been proven to be guilty in a court of law? NO. We as individuals are free to draw whatever inference we want to it should not matter. We have created a judicial system for a purpose. And, you don't know anything about me so please don't make it personal and question my comprehension ability. okay?
The fact that you fail to see the connection between free speech, trigger warning culture, rise of safe space culture and social media trials is your problem. Why conservative speakers are increasingly being denied platform in universities? Coz you dislike their ideas and don't wanna hear them. Why is everyone celebrating demise of Bill O'Reilly ? Coz you don't like his ideas either. There is a connection. Imagine if there would have been some liberal celebrity/journalist who was charged with similar crimes. Do you seriously believe people at NYT will celebrate it in similar manner?
So this irrational pathology which is there both on the right (alt-right) and left (see college liberals) is what I am referring to when I am talking about the crisis of liberal state as an institution. If you don't see it its your problem.
Bob Wood (Arkansas, USA)
Hmm, I wonder if this is a sign of an unintended "Trump Effect." A newly-invigorated and outraged electorate is in no mood to tolerate another blowhard, narcissistic old man. Goodbye, Bill O'Reilly. Enjoy your irrelevance.
Robert (Kennebunkport, Maine)
The firing of Bill O’Reilly after his long history of sexual harassment of women at Fox News confirms John Barrymore’s judgment: "Sex is the thing that takes up the least amount of time and cause the most amount of trouble."
It is no surprise that President Trump’s character reference for O’Reilly did not shield him from the firing axe. Trump had told the New York Times: "he is a good person. I don't think Bill did anything wrong”. Both men, who leave a trail of sexual abuse charges, subscribe to the philosophy articulated by candidate Trump: “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
It took over a dozen years for O’Reilly to be fired. One can only hope it will not take as long to remove his chief defender and character witness in the Oval office.
PJASWFLA (Florida)
Good riddance to bad trash. But he is reportedly leaving with a golden parachute worth tens of millions. What a sick value system we live in. Better that he should leave with huge penalties and fines.
Zinvev Trundas (Boulder, CO)
So, "KING OF CABLE TV" is he? Well, he's no king to me. I disagree with comment writers who say nothing has changed at Fox News.

It has now been demonstrated you can bring down a king from the grass roots as well as with regime change at the top. Those 50 advertisers pulling out made the difference. and the NYTimes article made the difference with the advertisers.

Now, the two crown heads at Fox TV, Ailes and Bill are both gone. I would say that represents an attempt by the Murdochs to change the culture at Fox TV, am I wrong? Zinvev out
James Ward (Richmond, Virginia)
Now that O'Reilly is out of a job, Trump should hire him as his press secretary. He'd be even "spicier" than the guy they've got and he didn't do anything that Trump doesn't do.
Barrie Peterson (Valley Cottage NY)
Thanks to the women speaking the truth, advocacy groups for protesting, advertisers for withdrawing, and, finally the plutocratic male owners for acting. Where were the Murdoch's ethics all along? Where were the "conservatives" who love Fox with their "family values"? Will evangelicals and women who supported Trump wake up? And can our admitted sex abusing President be held accountable for his actions, let alone praising O'Reilly?
Leslie Duval (New Jersey)
O'Reilly, like Trump, is a dirty old man with a distorted opinion of himself and women. Sleezeballs come in all shapes and sizes who will lie to protect the thin veil covering their abusive nature. Pence and the Morality wing of the RNC burned a big bridge of any credibility when they held their noses to support Trump, turning their heads away from the gutter reality of Trump and the likes of O'Reilly...so much for their high minded religious convictions they constantly try to push down everyone's throat.
nzierler (New Hartford)
Rupert Murdoch deserves no kudos for removing O'Reilly. Murdoch's interest was in protecting his cash cow in O'Reilly, which fostered the misogynist culture at Fox News. Kudos goes to "the failing" NY Times (according to our fearless leader) for running with this story of a sexual predator who masqueraded as a sentinel of ethics and fair play. Also, props to the many sponsors who bailed out, which, at the end of the day, forced Murdoch's hand.
Peter C. (North Hatley)
During the election season, when talk of trump's sexual predations came up, one of the complaints I heard most from trump supporters was that the timing was "really suspicious". Here he was running for President, and suddenly, all these women decide to bubble to the surface complaining about his sexual groping?

My response was that it was the domino effect brought about by publicity - one woman comes out, makes a complaint publicly, and then others feel empowered to do the same etc. It happened to Bill Cosby, Roger Ailes, and now O'Reilly.

I don't think there is any question at all about O'Reilly and his predilection for harrassing women. Nor do I think there is anything suspicious about the women coming forward at this moment in time.

Just like how it was when trump was being accused of sexual predation. Both are and were guilty as charged. And now, this sexual predator sits in the Oval Office. No doubt O'Reilly is a cult hero on the right. He'll go on speaking tours, and write a "woe is me" book. Then, he, Ailes and trump can all get together and reminisce about the good old days.
JimBob (Los Angeles)
It's a shame Bill O'Reilly didn't lose his job for being a blowhard liar who poisoned the weak-minded with vicious falsehoods that caused them to hate their fellow man. You'd have thought that would be enough. But no, it's perfectly all right to lie, it's just not all right to say, "Hey, baybeee!"
Our priorities suck.
AJ (Trump Towers Basement)
How sad that foreign companies had to lead the way for American firms to exit O'Reilly's show. Several of them acted immediately. Our titans followed along, perhaps only when they saw no other option (about as united as United!).

Advertiser exit must have been determinative in Fox's decision to jettison O'Reilly (since they already had the information on his misconduct). Just makes it doubly sad that our leading corporations had to essentially be forced into doing the right thing.
Out of Stater (Colorado)
But at least the corporations DID do the right thing and in this instance, quickly. I salute all the people and Womens' groups who spoke up, called advertisers, marched for this, tweeted or otherwise and so on. Sad, yes, that we (still) have to do this but they did listen.
The lesson is clear; with a corrupt Administration like this in power, we must continue to speak up.
To wit, the notorious Rep. Jason Chaffetz is not running for re-election in 2018.
Another victory.
MoBob (Cape Elizabeth, Maine)
Kudos to the NYT for its role in the long-overdue unseating of this sexist right-wing blowhard.
I can see the day when O'Reilly, Ailes, and Trump will launch their own poisonous TV network, shortly after the latter's ouster as POTUS...
Rk NY (New York)
This was a Business decision based on ad revenue loss ! And watch out for a MORE rewarding career for him on Syndicated Radio ! So much for all the lib excitement !
Douglas Evans (San Francisco)
If I were Sean Spicer, I would be nervous. What more appropriate front-person for Donald Trump than Bill O'Reilly?
carr kleeb (colorado)
there is something wrong with a system of "justice" when victims are silenced. Taking a settlement on the condition of silence should be illegal, not business as usual. And if this means that victims are no longer offered cash settlements- let the trials begin. Maybe then we can uncover the truth.
GRH (New England)
This is a good point. I agree everyone should have gone to trial. If the claims were "unfounded," as Bill O'Reilly says, let a jury of peers determine that. But ultimately they were not silenced. They took the money and then subsequently violated the terms of the settlement agreement's confidentiality provisions by being anything but silent. Now they risk having to pay back the $13 million to Bill O'Reilly, who presumably can sue them for violating the settlement agreements.
Keith (Folsom)
I don't think the damage he has done will be repaired in twenty years.
Brian (NY)
I see many comments lamenting the fact that Fox made a business decision, not a moral one. That is definitely the wrong attitude.

A corporation's sole value is to make a profit for owners. We should be greatly encouraged that this is the case. When even a corporation like Fox, which based so much of its "pitch" on misogyny and racism, along with selective reporting of facts, can be brought to dismiss the symbol of all that because people exposed to its repulsiveness caused advertisers to leave, we won.

Pulling their ads so as not to be besmirched in the eyes of their customers (whom we call "human beings"), shines a beacon flashing the message: If we think it will cost us money, we'll act decently.

Speak out loudly! Let corporations know that their customers have values and are willing to act in ways that might hit the corporate bottom line. Support all others who are willing to speak out. (And Vote!)
pnp (USA)
About time!
Please note: it is not just straight white males that are still getting away with sexual harassment.
This issue cross walks all gender, race & religious boundaries, yes, religious. All forms of sexual harassment are still acted upon by those men & Women who profess to be CHRISTIANS, ATHEISTS, MUSLIMS & HINDUS.
Like racism, it will take another 3 or 4 generations for this issue to be breed out of the human race.
GRH (New England)
Good point. It is called the biological imperative and sometimes expresses itself in ugly and offensive ways that are not always in step with the culture, be it Bill Clinton, Bill O'Reilly, 30 year old female teachers having sex with 15 year old male students, etc. There is a current fashion in the US of demonizing white heterosexual men for everything but anyone who has lived in other cultures understand some aspects of human behavior are roughly the same all over the world, regardless of race, religion, etc. Not sure this will be bred out, given the nature of reproduction and the insane population growth that has the world pushing past 8 billion.
Scott Liebling (Houston)
Money talks and, well, you know the rest.
Jeff (NY, NY)
Another PIG removed from FOX. Now this is a swamp that's getting cleaned up!
Wally Wolf (Texas)
Congratulations to the best of the best New York Times. You've done it again! Now it's on to Trumps' taxes and his ties to Russia.
Don (USA)
Bottom line is that Bill O'Reilly reported the news fairly, accurately and without political bias.

We should all consider why someone like Bill O'Reilly is forced to leave while Bill Clinton was allowed to continue being president.
Scott Liebling (Houston)
Do you hold Mr. Trump to the same standard?
Jack990 (New York)
I love how much sadistic pleasure people get out the demise of their ideological opponent. This is a sign that western civilization is moving away from its enlightenment ethic. What happened to the whole 'innocent until proven guilty' thing which is the foundation of free society and the rule of law which sustains it. By taking away this basic foundation the social justice warriors are damaging the fabric of our western society's.This is mob rule, witch hunting, collectivist tyranny which is also taking away freedom of thought from our universities. Our universities have become a den of unscientific dogmatic culture which enforces mob rule and group think upon us. If a person is settling out of court then it is NOT a proof that he/she is guilty period. BOTH sides decided to settle. But people are overwhelmed because they are rejoicing the demise of their 'opponent'. Nothing else matters. There was a time when liberalism was associated with rational, scientific endeavor, now it has turned into dogma and is afraid of scientific inquiry. It is all about feelings.
pianowerk (uk)
The real issue is that he was able to splash the cash to make embarrassing things go away. Whatever happened to all are equal in the eyes of the law?
idnar (Henderson)
There were no trials, because settlements were paid out to make the victims go away. That's what happened. If Bill was truly not guilty I'm sure he would have been happy to go to trial.
Angie (Chicago, IL)
And yet Trump was made president after similar allegations were made about him...
Don (Excelsior, MN)
So the Pied Piper of Fox Idiotville wants you to come into his parlor, to mix up a few stories or so. Fox suckerville will never run out of victims given that it has Americans for an audience.
KruelHunter (Literalville, USA)
Fairly typical behavior for the children of successful parents. They trash the elder's work in order to gain acceptance in their liberal social circles. The Ford Foundation, which used to do good work, has become just another source of funding for liberal failures as have so many other good works by wealthy and successful people unpopular with the political left.
Marvin Elliot (Newton, Mass.)
I find it bewildering that O'Reilly and the cadre of bigots have such a huge following. The Southern Poverty Law Center has listed so many groups that promote prejudice. O'Reilly, Breitbard and others will always find a ready audience with or without Fox News. The founding fathers could not have imagined what they had unleashed with the 1st and 2nd Amendment. We all must stand by it but reasonable minds need to be able to understand it's limitations.
Lee (Tampa Bay)
Unfortunately there are more performance artists waiting in the cue at Fox.
blackmamba (<br/>)
Now that the two biggest male chauvinist macho misogynist pigs are out at Fox Noise what can we expect to happen next?

Will the high school graduate entertainer white supremacist misogynist xenophobic American military service evader Sean Hannity continue spewing 'facts' and 'reason ' while still disguised as a 'journalist" ?
Mary (North Carolina)
Do we know the facts? Did O'Reilly sexually assault to where these women were put in a hospital or harmed physically? Verbal abuse gets 5 women $13 million? Maybe we are continuing to allow women to sue for money and ruin someone's career. We need to know the facts first. Of course, the NY Times and it's readers jump to conclusion that O'Reilly is a sexual predator. I feel ashamed on how women have found a way to get money for free. Feminists are in a anti men movement. Why aren't they focused on women who are killed or multiated on other countries instead of trying to sue for millions by "verbal abuse"? Maybe there was mere flirtation. i find this sad for real victims of sexual abuse as think a lot of this is to make a quick buck.
Joe Rousmaniere (New York)
The New York Times did not fire this guy. FOX News did. I bet they know the facts, and they did not like what they saw.
MarkAntney (Here)
You write as if you're unable to research the (many) allegations, the recorded phone calls,...?
idnar (Henderson)
I'm floored that you don't understand the definition of sexual harassment in the workplace and the impact it has on a woman's career. It does not require that women are actually assaulted, that is a completely different issue. And no amount of money can eliminate what these women had to endure from those disgusting pigs.
Roger (Michigan)
To understand the O'Reilly / Fox News saga (and many other things) just follow the money.

With O'Reilly's behavior now public knowledge, advertisers pulled out and
Fox income drops - he had to go. Nothing to do with decency or ethics.

Thank goodness for investigative journalism.
Nikki (Chicago, Illinois)
This is a tremendous victory for all women who have suffered silently and fearfully for decades from sexual abuse and harassment, not only in the broadcasting industry but in companies and offices across the country.
And of course, O'Reilly claims the accusations are not true. Roger Ailes does the same. Two liars. Two men so filled with self-import and inflated egos they believed they could say or do anything to anyone. FINALLY Fox (Murdochs) executives moved on this. What took them so long??
Embroiderista (Houston, TX)
Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!

That is all.
vandalfan (north idaho)
As we said in childhood, good riddance to bad rubbish.
Eleanore Whitaker (NJ)
If ever there was a time for women to wake up and fight back, that time is NOW. You don't need to be a feminist or what some men call a "feminazi" to know that workplace sexual harassment exists.

The number of women in workplaces who have been sexually harassed by their employers or fellow male employees far outweighs the number of females who are guilty of sexual harassment.

The very fact that O'Reilly got away with it by throwing Fox News money at women to buy their silence is a wake up call for all women.

Don't settle these cases with a pay off. That only allows these predators to turn women into prostitutes they can silence for a payoff. Then, these O'Reilly predators move on to their next victim.

Demand jail time if it warrants it. No amount of money can restore what was stolen from a woman who has been sexually harassed. And, if the shoe was on the other foot, you can bet the guy would take greatest satisfaction from seeing you in jail.
Daniel (New York)
Half expecting "Bill O'Reilly to replace Sean Spicer" headline shortly.
Patrick Stanford (Alamosa, Colorado)
Good news - now it's time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine.
jj (California)
Does it really surprise anyone that Fox news is a place that is toxic to woman? Men like Bill O'Reilly and Roger Ailes don't think that making suggestive comments and "copping a feel" are offensive ways to behave. I am old enough to remember the Playboy clubs, Hustler, Penthouse, and the general culture that accompanied them. Places like Fox News are still living in an era that treated woman like living Barbie Dolls.

Unfortunately we live in a country where woman are still fighting an uphill battle in order to prove they are "as good" as their male counterparts. Just look at who is occupying the White House. The Donald is no better than O'reilly and Ailes. Even after the tape of Trump spewing crude and vile remarks about women was made public, people still voted for him. Is that part of "Making America Great Again"?
X (US)
Younger Murdochs pushing for youth movement is probably biggest factor in this outcome.
Silence Dogood (Texas)
One can only imagine that Chris Christie and Bill O'Reilly will lunch in the coming weeks. No doubt the conversation will center on who was able to run their scam the longest. Lots of laughter and bragging about their deceptions, Bridgegate, etc.

If only someone could record this conversation - think of "A Face In The Crowd" when Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes doesn't know the microphone is still on - and share it with the public. What a beautiful comeuppance it would be.
vic weinryb (syracuse, utah)
a legend in his own mind. good bye fool!
Steve (DC)
The right is so morally confused. They chastise Bill Clinton for his sexual indiscretions, but they elect a man who bragged about raping women. Now Billo is fired for harassing women. Why does Trump get to become President while everyone else gets in trouble?
Cynthia (Spokane)
Because it's still a free country here in America and anyone can run for and be elected president. What a great country we live in. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's how the. Kurt system works too! The jury gets to decide based on many well presented facts. Mr. Trump is proving that the people are still in charge of this country. Again, I love it!!
Sean (New Orleans)
Confused, Cynthia - why didn't it prove that people were in charge of the country when Clinton was president?
jdoe212 (Florham Park NJ)
It seems that inappropriate behavior will always be tolerated, it has been around forever. The bottom line is where change takes place. If profit and future profits become questionable, loyalty and buddies are out. In the case of Trump's popularity, when house and senate seats are truly threatened, which equals power and perks of a Washington life style, republicans will flee to save their skins [seats]. Thats the way it is. Thats the way it has always been. Nothing new under the sun.
Anthony (Beachwood OH)
Fox News - leading the world in protecting family values. Fair and balanced, nope. Groping and leering, you got it.
Mott (Newburgh NY)
Soft porn racism and misogyny pay, O'Reilly and Fox News have made tons of money off this. They designed a whole network around these concepts, they even helped elect a president based on them. I suppose I agree with other comentators; why they are concerned now? It's a fomula which has made them a lot of cash, given them all kinds of influence, why stop now. They should double down and go for it.
Robert (Santa Rosa CA)
Good riddance! Unfortunately, in today's climate, he's likely to land on his feet at some other media outlet, probably online. Sad to say, but this kind of notoriety is a very marketable commodity.
Heather Roning (San Francisco)
Another win for Soros and the media crew. I see the NY Times did not showcase the complete stories in the video clips only those that serve their agenda. Fox News viewership will suffer and another voice of reason who actually demonstrated the facts and both sides of the story will be no more. Bill O'Reilly will be missed. He was awesome! Now viewers will be stuck with Tucker who every night just finds someone to challenge vs. showcasing a balanced piece like O'Reilly. MSNBC and CNN must be dancing in their studios to get the chance to push their agenda and finally get a shot at #1 because they knew they could not do it against O'Reilly.
AC (Minneapolis)
If O'Reilly didn't sexually harass women, causing advertisers to flee and costing Fox millions of dollars, he'd still be on the air. This has nothing to do with the right's weird obsession with George Soros. Why does the party of personal responsibility always want to blame others for their own failings?
indymary (midwest)
I've never found him to be fair and balanced. What other programs do you watch for news?
NI (Westchester, NY)
Trump called O'Reilly " a really good guy "! I guess birds of a feather flock together. O'Reilly could be ' fired ' for his unabashed misogyny. What can we do about Trump?
Don (USA)
ABC, NBC and CBS could use someone like O'Reilly on their network news shows.
AC (Minneapolis)
Oh please god no. Blowhard racist liars have no place in legitimate news organizations. If Fox doesn't want him, he can take his "Peabody Award" to Infowars.
Dady (Wyoming)
Never liked the show much. He is correct though on the cancer that is political correctness and themes like war on Christmas
AC (Minneapolis)
There is no war on Christmas. That's a completely made-up thing.
Mike (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
The last time I looked, Christmas was alive and well in my very p.c. town. Bright lights, smiling people, religious observances and gorgeous music. O'Reilly's "wars" were fought in the comfort of t.v. studios.
Montreal Moe (WestPark, Quebec)
The USA is a greatly diminished country because of men and women like Bill O'Reilly. Until humility again becomes a necessary virtue for people in power Americans will suffer grievous harm. America seriously needs Jimmy Carter's second term.
Jagan (Portland, OR)
Looks like someone's got a dossier on the Murdoch brothers and forcing these changes!
Fred (Chicago)
The Murdochs fired O'Reilly only when he became a liability to News Corp's image and also once they lost dollars from many advertisers, who, in turn, didn't want their brands tarnished.

Money talked but, even so, this is a well needed win for women.
Chris Weiss (Shelton, Nebraskaa)
It's not the crime, it's the cover up
AND the crime.
Rishi (New York)
He should have been our much earlier than what has taken place. America does not need such crude reporters.
Jagan (Portland, OR)
A well coordinated take down of the Fox News establishment figures by the Democratic Party operatives such as Jehmu Green. I mean, someone's got to pay for the humiliating election defeat of their dear leader!
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!
Kenell Touryan (Colorado)
The 'billions' Murdoch owns with which he gets what he wants, verses the stand the people have to take to defend morality...
Ethics and morality are often forced to take a back seat against the billions the US 'oligarch' have, in pushing their way...

Thank God, eventually justice prevails....
Mick (L.A. Ca)
Trump and O'Reilly two privileged white men Who use their status to abuse everyone around them. And the deplorable's love it.
steve (new york)
How telling that they only ditch this creep when sponsors (Money) speak.

When will adults start acting as such?
Keith (CA)
Let us not for forget, our "president" threw his full support behind Bill O'Reilly. Wrong again!, Mr. "President".
Hans Christian Brando (Los Angeles)
So Mr. "War On Christmas" has been given a lump of coal by a Santa Claus named Murdoch. Ho-ho-ho indeed!

But don't count him completely out. Aside from the inevitable book ("Killing Bill O'Reilly"?), it's likely he won't be off television long. Remember when everybody said Bill Maher was through on TV after "Politically Incorrect"?
Jagan (Portland, OR)
Just look up the democrat operative Jehmu Greene from whom these allegations stem from.... Looks like Fox News is not aware of the moles put in place in its house to bring it down.
Tom (New York)
This demonstrates that speaking out, signing petitions, and protesting loudly can be effective. Now, if only our complacent and ineffective Congressional Democrats could learn from this... and move forward with impeaching Trump.
Robert (Boston)
You could put "Bozo the Clown" in O'Reilly's time slot and as long as s/he does the following Fox's rating will remain high:
1. Say "liberal elite" at least ten times during the show.
2. Mention the "deep state" left in place by Pres. Obama several times and claim "they" are responsible for whatever it is you are pontificating about.
3. Remind Trump supporters that they are really winning in spite of Trump's many defeats in his first 100 days.
4. Only reference "news" from Breitbart, Drudge and Alex Jones. Everything else is fake news from the MSM.

No rocket science required in the Fox News environment - just roving hands and the ability to dumb it down.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
Ousting sexual predators from positions of authority is the right thing to do of course. But for those folks who only watch 'Fox Noise', may feel at a loss, given O'Reilly's condescending voice of arrogant petulance. Why is it that once we feel partisan about something, we can't shake the shackles of ignorance and prejudices...in spite of contrarian evidence, based on facts instead of fiction?
Renee (SF)
If only this could be the issue that triggers Trump's downfall as well .....it can't happen soon enough.
njglea (Seattle)
Good Job Good People of America! Thanks to attorney Lisa Bloom who is representing the latest victims pro-bono. Thanks to attorney Gloria Allred who has been standing up against sexual harassment and discrimination for many years. Thanks to all the women who have had to endure this treatment and decided to tell the world instead of taking a BIG payoff. Thanks to the protesters, callers and everyone who took a stand against this kind of behavior.

Thanks to the media for following up on this and reporting fully. Thanks to the advertisers who pulled their ads from this braggart sexual predator.

Thanks to the advertisers who will question fox so-called news "ratings" and see just how many real viewers they have. They lie about everything else and, since inflated numbers are a mainstay of much of the media, it's time someone questioned their "highest cable television ratings". Advertisers and viewers should drop them like the fake news hot potato they are.

Thanks to every American, and people from around the world, who are done with institutionalized sexual harassment and discrimination. Women are over one-half the population of the world - the great silenced majority - and SHE is roaring her disapproval.

Time for a new world order when women and men share power equally to bring balance to our out-of-balance world.
AACNY (<br/>)
This has nothing to do with those legal proceedings. It is a witch hunt to take down a nemesis of the left.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, California)
So now the Great Fox Hope is Tucker Carlson. I cannot stomach his blend of smarmy, self-satisfied and arrogant.
Joel Friedlander (Forest Hills, New York)
A settlement of a claim or a lawsuit is not an admission of guilt, and in fact most such settlements specifically state that the defendant is not admitting guilt in settling the claim or lawsuit.
Such settlements usually include a confidentiality clause that prevents the settling parties from discussing the particulars of the settlement. Obviously here, someone spilled the beans in violation of such an agreement.

Everyone, whether they like Bill O'Reilly or not assumes, ab initio, that he was liable for sexual harassment in the 13 Million dollars worth of settlements.

In a criminal case the burden upon the state, in every state, is to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt, and in a civil case, in most states, it is by a fair preponderance of the credible evidence.

Where is the proof of Bill O'Reilly's misbehavior? He was forced out by a boycott of his show by most of the advertisers who funded the show. Justice by inference is not the American Way.
And, if it is becoming the American Way we need to put a stop to it.

Since the actions charged against Bill O'Reilly are substantially criminal in nature we should apply the SCOTUS' opinion on the issue to both Civil law as well : In Coffin v. United States, 156 U.S. 432 (1895), the court stated that “The principle that there is a presumption of innocence in favor of the accused is the undoubted law, axiomatic and elementary, and its enforcement lies at the foundation of the administration of our criminal law. …”
Lynchburglady (Oregon)
Two down (Ailes and O'Reilly), several more to go before America is rid of the cancer that is FOX "news."
Robert D (Washington State)
The "No Spin Zone" guy spins his firing with a version of it's the other guy's (gal's) fault while visiting the Pope no less. How ironic!
r mackinnon (Concord ma)
Bad week for gassy, bloated hypocrites.
Tom (Pennsylvania)
I'm curious why the self-righteous left never went after President Bill Clinton when he was having sex with a teenage intern in the White House.

This morning I pulled my United Way donation from any women's organizations in my community. Until the left polices their own I won't donate to these liberal charities.
Kat IL (Chicago)
Wow. You're making women pay for the transgressions of a man who was president over 20 years ago. That attitude exists along the same spectrum as "she was wearing a short skirt - she had it coming."
CB (Brooklyn, NY)
Economics did what ethics couldn't.
PMH (NY, NY)
Kudos to the Murdoch brothers who have the spine to step on a
spider like O'Reilly. They fought their old man and won. I don't
care why they did it, just that they had the guts to do it.
Svenbi (NY)
Thank you NY Times!!! You truly "drain the swamp"!!!
Peter (Minnesota)
Wait, Dolan arranged for him to visit the Pope? Isn't this the same guy who stands in judgment of politicians? I think we need to hear a darn good reason from Dolan why he would facilitate such a visit by this serial harasser. I would be happy with "who are we to judge?" but I don't expect that from Dolan.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, California)
Bill O': Define "unfounded."
Mary (Uptown)
There once was a blowhard, O'Reilly
Who treated his colleagues quite vilely.
Should've kept his mouth zipped-
'cause now, he's pink-slipped!:
And women all 'round -we be smiley.
Hurricane Kate (Maine)
Well said, Mary! But I suspect it wasn't his mouth he should have kept zipped!!
Lee Harrison (Albany/Kew Gardens NY)
O'Reilly is now out the door
his fans who hunger for more
to satiate their bile
another channel will dial
and continue their love of a boor.
Independent Voter (Los Angeles)
Tucker Carlson may or may not be a sexual harasser - is that even a word? - but he is just as obnoxious and just as much a hack as O'Reilly. Smirking his way through "interviews" with people he clearly holds in contempt, he is the epitome of Faux Noise spinning (if only he were blond!) and about as appealing as swamp gas...and yes, the comparison is both purposeful and apt.
Steve (Los Angeles)
Too bad he is leaving. He is the face of hipocracy, crassness, meaness, misogyny, fake news, Republicanism, trumpism. Now we´ll have to watch White House press conferences, etc., to get our daily dose of what is wrong with America.

Can we send Murdoch back to Australia? He (along with corporate America) played us like a fiddle.
j (canada)
Will the president be next? Bill was just another faux news liar. It seems lies make more money than the truth. Is Rome burning? It smells in DC....
Uzi Nogueira (Florianopolis, SC)
Bill O'Reilly's dismiss from FOX signals, perhaps, the beginning of the end of an election-winning cycle of the Republican party. A bad omen of things to come.

The election of Trump -- accompanied by the ideological deconstruction of the GOP -- is causing FOX to lose its main raison d' etre and success among the conservative masses.

That is, to use (highly effective) scorched earth communication tactics against the domestic enemy. The democratic party and its first charismatic black president, Barack Obama.

Republicans face a conundrum. Abraham Lincoln party's future is now tied to Donald Trump. An outsider which has humiliated and destroyed mainstream republican candidates during the last election cycle.

If Trump's presidency is successful on the domestic agenda, the GOP winning streak continues but if Trump fails.

In sum, GOP and FOX news became a handy political tool for Trump's ambitious to seek reelection.
Sam Kanter (NYC)
Good riddance to this arrogant, bullying blowhard, not unlike a certain resident in the White House.

Now if only, next, FOX news would shut down altogether - the network of Murdoch blatant propaganda for the unthinking, angry and incurious white folks.
Jon Smith (Washington State)
Interesting to observe what Democrats will hold onto for a glimmer of hope that their party still has any relevancy. I guess when all you have to feast on is crumbs you have to savor what comes your way.
MarkAntney (Here)
What does O'Reilly's firing by Fox have to do with Democrats?
AACNY (<br/>)
Yes, they must believe that if they can only get rid of FoxNews, they can win an election. After all, the pursuit of "fairness" is their life's work.
Sam Kanter (NYC)
Nice spin, having nothing to do with this article.
Pajaritomt (New Mexico)
Thank you, New York Times for exposing O'Reilly's many settlements and thank you to all the advertisers who stood up for working women. This might not have happened even 10 years ago and I am so delighted to see the corporate world decide, pragmatically, not to support famous sexual abusers.

I am especially grateful to all the women who sued and to the ones who did not sue, but came forward to tell their stories. It took all of them to get rid of the abuser.

It is my hope that in the future that more and more corporations will figure out that it is in their own best interests to have workers of all genders, ethnic backgrounds and even nationalities on their teams. Let us hope that they will stand up for making the work place comfortable for all kinds of humans.
Pditty (Lexington)
one down...one to go.
ugh (NJ)
This decade is the last gasp of the misogynist white male in America. Our slave-era electoral system managed to get one last sexist, racist white guy in the white hous, despite his loss by almost 3 million votes, and the backlash from the rest of us...the large majority of the country...is just beginning. The breathtaking unfairness of a ridiculously qualified woman, who won the election by millions of votes, not being made president despite the clear wishes of the majority have woken the population. Women are now leading the charge to overcome the patriarchy hat has held millions of non-white-males down. Can't wait to see who's ousted next.
Mick (L.A. Ca)
Still loving that Hillary. Run Hillary run.
Brady Greer (Louisville, KY)
While I do agree with your pejoratives directed at Trump, I find your argument to be an inaccurate one at best. If you truly believe that white men in this nation today generally go about their lives with the intent of keeping those of the opposite gender and different races "down," then you likely do not pay sufficient attention.

Are there rights in this nation that are exclusive to white males alone? Of course not. Times have evolved from slavery and before women had voting rights. There is no dominant white patriarchy; this is but an excuse from those who veer far left of center.

I definitely do agree with your arguments regarding Hillary; she clearly was more qualified than Trump and should currently hold the Oval Office. We would be better off if that were the case.
pnp (USA)
Sexual harassment is acted out by all races, genders and people of all religions.
John (Baldwin, NY)
Bill's next book title: Killing Bill O'Reilly.

I have been waiting for that one for years.
Theni (Phoenix)
Once again the Catholic Church shows preference to the rich and wealthy and corrupt. Dolan must be pretty proud of Bill's sexual exploits, to recommend him to see the Pope . I wonder if he has already reserved a place for him in heaven?
FilmMD (New York)
Note to Rupert Murdoch: Hiring sexual predators might be bad for your brand and bad for business.
vincentgaglione (NYC)
Your journalism deserves praise!
Abby (Tucson)
Not just their journalism, but the way they play chess. This is the worst possible time for the Murdochs to face their accusers. Last time the Sky pie was up for bids, the UK hacking scandal made that impossible. Now the pie is up again, and there's this mess in OFCOM's face. How can they reward this clan?
Indiana Pearl (Austin, TX)
Does this mean an end to the war on Christmas?
MarkAntney (Here)
Not really, He'll probably go underground and lead an X'mas Special Forces Group of Commandos and fight Christmas Enemies in a Stealth manner.
Scott K (Atlanta)
It is all about the money. Just like at the NYT, it is all about the money. O'Reilly will be back someplace else, that is interested in the money.
Lee Harrison (Albany/Kew Gardens NY)
Yeah ... he'll be on one of those three-digit cable channels that hawk fake jewelry, 'gold' coins with next-to-zero gold in them, and lubricated catheters.

And their will be a whole lot less money in it, for Billy.
mvrox (California)
The spin stops here.
Marilyn Bamford (Brimson, MN)
At least twenty five years of teaching has been going on in this country about sexual harassment in the workplace and this fellow didn't "get it". Get a group of women together anywhere and everyone has a story, which most of them didn't report. Yes, there is the rare "innocent" kind of stupid unpleasant remark, but we all know when a mean spirited pattern is in place .
FJM (NYC)
"When you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything."

President Donald Trump
Abby (Tucson)
A star is faultless. Can you believe this clown thinks he's gonna ride in the Queen's carriage? Even the Ringlings know when to fold the tent!
Karen (New Mexico)
What a coincidence that O'Riley is currently being photographed in Rome, shaking hands with the Pope. Hypocrite!

Wasn't there a clause in his contract that allowed for him to be fired without a multi-million $ "bonus" for a very prolonged and public ethics violation? This is an outrageous example of "doing well by doing bad".
Rob Farkas (Jay, NY)
What seismic shift? This was a bottom line decision. He went from being an asset to a liability almost overnight. Simple business decision.
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, Ca)
Advertisers fled his show and public protests flared after a Times investigation revealed payouts of $13 million to resolve claims against him of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior.

I hope the Times has all its affairs in proper order. You know, people who throw stones have to be prepared to have them returned.

It's not like the women got nothing for their suffering without you having to go for the extra pounds of flesh. Thirteen million is a lot of money. Witch-hunts were all based on the same principle. Thanks to the Times, MSNBC has now become even more insufferable than they already were, as impossible sounding as that may be. Birds of a feather do flock together.
Lilo (Michigan)
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Ironic that after all the racist statements and lies the thing that takes O'Reilly down is bad publicity from sexual harassment settlements. Tell a black Ph.D that he looks like a crack dealer or that slaves who built the White House were well fed and decently treated and advertisers aren't bothered.
Maurelius (Westport)
SO O'Reilly has been accused of sexual assault by numerous women yet the Catholic Church arranged tickets for him to meet the Pope.

And there he is, shaking hands with the pontiff with a nice grin on his face.

What's wrong with these people? Is Timothy M. Dolan living under a rock?
RichD (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
I've seen clips of him, but I never watched his whole show. His style does not appeal to me, and I really don't know what people see in an opinionated loud mouth who thinks he's God's gift to the world. He alone knows the truth? Yeah, right.

Anyway, as to these women at Fox: they didn't know what kind of creeps worked there? That's fairly obvious to most people who have only seen them on TV. And did these women really think they were hired by an outfit like Fox because of the size of their brains? Waitresses or fast food workers harassed by some creepy boss I can I can totally sympathize with. But these women at Fox, who are in it for the money, and little else, not so much - like that one who said she lost a "lucrative" job opportunity because she rebuffed his advances. So she says. If she thinks she's so great, why didn't she just go to a different network - where they actually do hire people for the size of their brains!
EC17 (Chicago)
I agree with the accolades to you the New York Times!!

However, I wish the headline read, "Trump is Forced Out at the White House". The country is an extermely dangerous situation with Trump as POTUS. No matter what small victories may take place, Trump has the capability of obliteriating the planet together with North Korea and Russia. No matter all the horrible things Trump does, he will blame the results on Obama, Clinton and the Democrats. He has got to GO NOW!!! Right now!!!!!!!! More people have to wake up and get alarmed about the harm Trump is doing. He is killing the American people by his actions.
Jay (Austin, TX)
I am appalled at commenters who insist that men like O'Reilly and Trump are "victims" of "lefty" or "female" persecution. Who raises these kinds of people? What kind of parents did they have (or not have, as the case may be, since some seem to have crawled out from under rocks)? Did they grow up in abusive families where the father bullied everyone while the mother cowered in fear? Because that's the only logical explanation for this kind of sickness.

What is wrong with us as a society that we have a large cohort of men who seem to lack any ability to feel anything except rage over their supposed victimhood and the unfairness of women and liberals who stand up to their abusive behavior. These men apparently believe they should be allowed to get away with being frightening, aggressive, abusive, and violent, and that no one should have the right to stop them. Why haven't we openly recognized that this is a big problem in this country? These men don't contribute anything positive to society, and do nothing but stir up hatred and fear in others. Their mental illnesses are a major factor in the social division we experience now. Most people don't like this kind of abuse and don't engage in it or want to be around it. What and when are we going to do something about it?
Wm.T.M. (Spokane)
LOCK HIM UP! Maybe in a culture that values above all warriors, gridiron guts, and ruggedly ill informed individualism, it's time to criminalize sexual harassment. While we're at it, we might try giving women equal rights with men.
That would mean pay. That would mean educating kids that chores and responsibilities both at home and in the work place aren't sexualized. The meme touted by the corporate shills at Fox News that somehow, despite monumental dysfunction on so many levels, the USA is the shining exception among the plant's countries is actually correct. We're a glaring example of hypocrisy, self righteous intolerance and racial hate. There's one little statistic that tells an awful story about America.
It is this: Since 911 less than 150 Americans have been killed on US soil by declared terrorists. During that same time Americans have killed about 450,000 of their fellow citizens. But wait there's more. The average murder costs one million dollars. So we've spent 450,000,000,000.00.USD slaughtering each other. O'Reilly was and is a hate monger, among his other talents. He's been a shill for the NRA and their blood soaked interests. That he prayed on women is no surprise. LOCK HIM UP!
EagleFee LLC (Brunswick, Maine)
Wow, with O'Reilly suddenly available, Sean Spicer's job looks much less secure.
Pierre Carbonneau (St. Martin, FWI)
Good thing Trump became President. Had he been hired by Fox, he'd probably be out of a job by now. Just saying.
Carl LaFong (NY)
Can you see Bill O'Reilly taking over for Sean Spicer?
kicksotic (New York, NY)
O'Reilly should welcome his ouster from Faux News as an economic boon. Now that he doesn't have a regular gig lying like a dog on Faux News, just imagine how many of his "Killing" books he'll have time to proofread and claim credit for after his co-authors have cranked them out.
Patricia (Ohio)
Will he get a big parting gift of millions like his former boss Ailes did?
Esperanza j. Betancourt (Westfield, NJ)
NYT once again making news not reporting. Not a fan of Bill O but wondering if they will pursue a liberal journalist with the same passion?!
notfooled (US)
Let us know when you find a liberal journalist with dozens of sexual harassment claims against him.

Of course not. The New York Tirade is a "watchdog" of the Right only. They're a lapdog of the Left.

Soliloquy of an O'Reilly
Fox n friends, Ruperts and country-bumpkins,

Whether tis nobler to seek advertising dollars or to take legal arms against sea of troubles, to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune, to retire perchance to dream of getting even, aye there's the rub (of a female staffers behind).
Good night sweet prince, parting is so sour
JN (Atlanta)
I often wonder how a singly guy with wealth and fame can so easily become so embroiled in a suit of inappropriate sexual behavior when there is no physical contact? It appears that this can be the curse of wealth and fame, especially when the NYT smells a juicy story and an opportunity to take down a conservative. Hmmm!
pnp (USA)
1. Sexual harassment is NOT just about non consenting or unwanted physical contact.
2. Words & non physical actions are also vehicles to act out sexual abuse/ harassment on another human.

A sexual preditor gets VIP status to meet the pope. How perfect is that!
Bill Devlin (State College, PA)
Do not buy his books! Now if they could only can that little snot Hannity!
Woof (NY)
No fan of O'Reilly, but his firing rise the question to what degree odious personal conduct can justify suppression of performance in the public space.

Not a new conundrum. Performance of Wagner music has been debated Israel for years

Economic arguments such as that the concert halls would be half empty did not settle the issue - and neither will in the O'Reilly case
Tuna (Milky Way)
Karma.
Daisy Do (Corpus Christi)
I am a woman and I believe that no woman should ever be subjected to being sexually harassed. With that said, it's a sad day for FOX News to lose a great voice. There were payments made to the women so a form of retribution was made and Murdoch should have stood by O'Reilly. I will not support the advertisers that bailed. The women that are now speaking out should return the $13MM, or at least the portion they were paid, as I'm sure there was a clause that kept them from speaking. Guess no merit for anybody in this story!
AACNY (<br/>)
Interesting question. Are women who were remunerated for their "suffering" still victims? How did Megan Kelly manage to thrive even though she was the target of sexual harassment?

The left hates FoxNews, despises O'Reilly and is only too happy to see him taken out. It mistakenly believes this is a "victory". The truth is that several times he's mentioned doing something different on his show. He appeared bored. After all, he's had the number one cable show for 15 years. He probably felt it wasn't worth it. Perfect timing.
Lise Schiffer (Chicago)
Let's see; Bill O'Reilly lost his job because he settled $13 million worth of sexual harassment claims. Donald Trump settled $25 million worth of sexual harassment claims. Why does he still have a job? Am I missing something?
Iver Thompson (Pasadena, Ca)
In a settlement, don't both sides have to agree to it? If so, where's the grave injustice that this man seemingly represents. If civilized justice is irrelevant in all of this, spare us the cost of it and let's stick to vigilantes.
pnp (USA)
non of those claims occurred while trying to be a president.
Americans wanted to be great again so they choose vulgar & bully boy trump instead of a woman.
Rod (Chicago)
It's pretty obvious that FoxNews is a place where sexual harassment is overlooked (if not condoned) until it becomes a public relations problem. So everyone sit back and start betting on which on-air personality is the next contestant on "The Price of the Settlement Ain't Right".
DecliningSociety (Baltimore)
The New Hysterical Leftist Times is runs daily hit jobs on all "conservative" leaders. Read the comments. The rabid left is now dancing around their Killing O'Reilly book burning. Their weapon of choice... political correctness and lawsuits. Oh, sure sign me up for that crew. NOT!
CAMeyer (Montclair NJ)
Why blame the "rabid left"? If O'Reilly did nothing other than be "politically incorrect," why not blame Fox News? Isn't firing O'Reilly just because of some advertiser complaints a slap in the face to you and other loyal Fox viewers?
Paul (Portland)
Fox News fired him. Sounds like you are barking up the wrong tree.
JAE (AZ)
Why is this a political story?
Abby (Tucson)
Actually, we are flying in the Media section, sir.
pnp (USA)
It's a story that means more then just politics - for some of us it is our lives.
JerryD (HuntingtonNY)
Should be interesting to read Bill's upcoming novel "Killing O'Reilly".

The usual suspects: Barack Obama, The Clintons, Liberals, The liberal media, Socialist Democrats, Saturday Night Live, ALL immigrants, ALL women, and last, but not least, the failing N.Y. Times.
Mia (CT)
This man should never have been in the category of Journalist with his blatant lack of objectivity in the first place, let alone his abhorrent disgusting behavior. Thank you NYT for your fine reporting ! It is too bad it took advertising withdrawal dollars to finally boost his ouster......SAD.
Richard Lehner (St. Petersburg, Floriduh)
Good riddance! He's the same as the rest of the holyer than thou crowd, bunch of hypocrites and they always get caught. Now go after Limbaugh! What's sick is the number of people who follow such trash. He was never a "real" news man, just entertainment television for the mean and haters crowd.
People like him are what's wrong with this country. What is a sin is that until is cost them ad dollars they let him pay to play, how sick. He is a sick individual, let him go to confession then tell everyone what he did was ok. He's still not owning up to it from the article I see.
Kitty P (Oklahoma)
Evidently Cardinal Dolan has a deaf ear when it comes to abuses....still.
susan (manhattan)
Another "conservative family values Christian" exposed for what he really is - a hypocrite. Good riddance!!! Thank you NY Times for bringing this man down. It was your reporting that did it. So much for "fake news."
Sarah (Arlington, VA)
Thank you, NYT, for your incredible investigative journalism.

O'Reilly wouldn't have forced out had you not published that even after the ouster of Ailes, the pigsty culture was still the same at the so-called Fair and Balanced network.

The Murdochs only reacted after big name companies, e.g. Mercedes Benz and others, pulled their ad dollars from O'Reilly's show.

I hope that the next goal of your investigative journalists should be to clean up the pigsty of the robber baron Trump & Family, LLC in the White House, enriching itself on the back of American taxpayers while foreign money pours into their enterprise.
ASHRAF CHOWDHURY (NEW YORK)
Thanks NYT, the courage of victims, attorney Lisa Bloom , the media and the activists who demanded justice and firing of Bill O'Reilly. Now some bold and courageous investigative journalist should look into Hannity , the racist. He is lying every night and spreading hatred, racism against black, Hispanics and Muslims.
Jagan (Portland, OR)
I understand your pain at Hannity exposing the underbelly of so-called moderate Muslims who turn out to be Islamic radicals in hiding (the Islamic term is 'taqqiya')... But every free and civilized society has a right to know and protect itself from people who are hell bent to harm them and establish a theocratic global Islamic Caliphate.
William (Bronx New York)
Bill ought to get a guitar and start a musical career singing the blues.
What a dope!!
GreggMorris (Hunter College)
What I'm really waiting for is for an enterprising reporter to contact for comment Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the archbishop of New York, who helped O'Reilly get an audience with the Pope. Then contact the Vatican for comment. Bill O'Reilly was able to do what he did to women because of collateral support from respected institutions. I also would like to know, but will probably never know, what he said in his confessionals. Just asking'.
William (Bronx New York)
Bill most likely lied in the confessional. Oops how can that be he's a devout Catholic.
Lilies of the valley (Charlottesville.)
If Fox News seriously wants to make amends to working women and prove its culture has changed, it is time to put at least 50% more women in charge since they don't seem to have any women in charge. Women might actually do a great job, especially at keeping great female talent like Megan Kelly.

You can also stop hiring sex symbols who have no journalism experience as the faces of your news staff. ex- beauty queens who are blonde, wear tight short dresses and are ignorant. Try diversity, in looks, if not in races. Make sure they have journalism backgrounds and know how to ask smart questions. As training, have them watch Charlie Rose interviews.

Since I hate the hateful division your channel dumps upon the American Citizen and that you bombard their brains with lies that seek to destroy our American Democracy. I cannot wish you luck.
DecliningSociety (Baltimore)
The very wealthy and powerful are often the targets of grievance lawyers who use the tort system and sexual cases as the basis for a shake down. All Billy need do is pursue a relationship with a co-worker, find himself alone in a room with a female co-worker, or even simply say some tongue-in-cheek comment to a co-worker. At my office the men are trained to always leave any room that a female cleaning lady enters alone, never pursue a relationship with a female co-worker, never discuss any sexual topic with a female, period.

Welcome to the lefty utopia - a reality dominated by political correctness and lawsuits .... well, only if you are a conservative white male!
Gary McMillan (Woodland, Utah)
So, how do we pull our advertising from the Groper-In-Chief and force him out of the White House? Gonna be the only way.
J. (Ohio)
To McMillan: Perhaps even Putin is beginning to regret that his plan to put Trump in the White House worked. We can only hope that he will leak compromising videos, evidence of Trump's huge debts and money to the oligarchs, and recordings of team Trump's aiding and abetting the subversion of our electoral system.
Liberty and Justice For All (Springfield VA)
Offer Trump a great deal.
Jianwei Xu (Philadelphia)
The good work by NYT on this development made up for their blatant bias against Bernie Sanders during the primary, by a little bit.
Jules (NY)
I applaud the list of companies that took a stand against sexual harassment, pulled their advertising from his show and made a huge difference in the social discourse of this issue going forward. It will not be tolerated.
Thank you

Is this supposed to impress OFCOM? They knowingly rehired a man they knew to be a liability, but on terms that made them less liable for his continued abuse of the staff and guests? Seriously? This is supposed to impress? Then OFCOM must be as witless as the Murdoch clan.

I pray for Europe should this clan take over the entire Sky Pie. Imagine Marie LePen under their golden streaming services stomping on the fragile soil of liberal democracy.
Consultp (the 4 corners)
I read I read the story, did not see how much money the Murdoch's
threw at Billo for severance pay.
How much did he get?? $5 million, $8 million???--gs
A. Davey (Portland)
In a just world, the IRS would characterize the $13 million Fox paid to settle the claims against O'Reilly as ordinary income to the disgraced star.

And the federal government would exercise the power of eminent domain against Fox News and pay Rupert Murdoch to go away in the interest of restoring the nation's sovereignty and cleansing the national discourse of right-wing propaganda and fake news.
J L. S. (Alexandria Virginia)
I'm rushing out to get a copy of Bill O'Reilly's newest book, "Killing O'Reilly"! It's about a bigoted, sexist, racist, idiot commentator who chokes to death on his own foul words and deeds!
BrianP (Atlanta, GA)
The extraordinarily sad thing about this whole affair is that the true fans of O'Reilly will still be his strongest supporters. They simply won't care about his immoralities because he preaches their dogma. It is the same with Trump. His supporters do not care about his lack of knowledge or ethics. As long as he promotes the party line and signs bills out of Congress, he's good.
Clark Landrum (Near the swamp.)
I watched O'Reilly's show a few times years ago and wrote him off as a blowhard. Sort of like Trump. All bluster, no grace.
Knute (Richmond)
Just look at the Fox News website. Its "Features and Faces" section always has Playboy type headlines. Tells you a lot about what the culture is at Fox and about the adults who use Fox as their go-to news in front of their kids. Sons, look at this. Daughters, be this.
Nik Mednik (New York)
Sean Hannity is next. Get rid of him and Fox's transformation into a legitimate news source will redeem itself.
Agnostique (Europe)
A victory would have been that 5 million watchers wake up and recognize what a low-life, alt-fact windbag this guy is and he is fired due to the consequent bad ratings. And Fox's audience on the whole gets a clue and forces Fox to report fact based material to make a buck.

You know Fox viewers will blame the PC mainstream media and nothing will change.

Kosher Dill (In a pickle)
All of the pro-O'Reilly commenters blaming "liberals" for his ouster need to take a reality check: he wasn't fired by liberals. Liberals can't influence Fox News management whatsoever, as has been demonstrated for 20 years.

O'Reilly was voluntarily fired by the alt-right billionaire owners of Fox. When even they reach their gag limit, you know it's bad.
David (Peoria, Illinois)
Its too bad that the comments to this article are so filled with hate and snooty condescension towards the people at Fox News. I understand the decision to let Aisles and O'Reilly go, after enormous pressure. The leadership and counsel at Fox News failed the audience and the men and women at the station. However, the vitriol expressed by many here in response is exactly the type of intolerant condescension and, "I am right and you are stupid", that extremist liberal organizations exude daily. Oftentimes with little substance when their surface is scratched with facts which expose their ignorance. No point of view, except ours, is acceptable in a "free society". Really? Separate personal behavior from this discussion and recognize that Fox News is a legitimate source of news. The "legitimate" media, as one person here called it, has lost it's legitimacy with decades of biased reporting and factual inaccuracy. The competition presented by Fox News will, hopefully, return objectivity and factual reporting to the other "legitimate" news organizations and serve the country better. We have Trump because of the drift into intolerant extremism of the Democratic Party, and it's new base, and because of an absolutely untrustworthy and lousy presidential candidate.
Barbara (D.C.)
I wish I could say good riddance to one of the most erosive influences on American politics, but he'll probably pop up elsewhere with his brainwashed acolytes at his feet. At least his bloviating ego gave us the brilliant Stephen Colbert character as parody.
Hedley Lamarr (NYC)
O'Reilly's isn't exactly Bill Cosby. He's a boor without the sexual assault.

I had a friend like him who would say things to women that made me cringe. Obnoxious is a mild way to describe him.

O'Reilly reduces women to sex objects. Frankly, I don't think he likes them. His wife left him for another man. Enough said?
Ken Calvey (Huntington Beach, Ca.)
Just think of all the time Bill can spend with his children now.

Undoubtedly O'Reilly has many determined supporters; these are the people who insist that Barack Obama is not a citizen, that climate change is a hoax, that evolution is contradicted by Biblical "fact" and that sexual harassment doesn't exist. I hope this truly nasty person does indeed get a platform to continue expressing his hateful beliefs. It can be paid for by subscription, and let's see whether all these deniers are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Uncanny and ironic timing that O'Reilly leaned of his fate while visiting an institution that codifies women as unequal to men and that has perpetrated massive sexual harassment and abuse of girls and boys for centuries on end.

Fox News and the Catholic Church have much in common: Those who project themselves as holier-the-thou with smug arrogance are more often than not the most sinister sinners.

Cardinal Dolan and Bill O'Reilly are a perfect match.

Bigotry?

The guy is a clearly a pig. But, so what? Women aren't snow flakes who will melt around someone like O'Reilly. By now if women aren't able to handle the likes of O'Reilly, they have more serious problems. Guys like him have been around forever.

This is just as much a witch hunt against a conservative mouthpiece as it is against a chauvinist pig. O'Reilly has fans because he's good to his viewers. He makes an effort to give them enough straight information to decide the issues. He's the first to shut down straight partisans, left or right, on his show. He's conservative but fair.

I've always found him to be crude and boorish but I can see why he is number one in the cable field.

Trumps support for good old Bill just confirms his own abuse of women, birds of a feather stick together
.It’s great to be a Catholic, where your taught to love the sinner but hate the sin. He has already shook the hand of the Pope, & went to confession which will absolve him of his sins. The only problem that remains are the women who had to put up with his abuse, which will last them for a life time.

Thanks for your stellar reporting, New York Times!

It seems Fox 'News' has no respect for it's viewers until reality hits. O'Reilly has had sexual harassment issues for years but Fox covered them up.
Why would people watch a show that has no respect for it's viewers?

Sadly, this kind of treatment of women is the type of America many Trumpites want as "making America great again".
Women, people of color, and non-Christians knew their place and what was expected of them.

"When you're a star.... they let you. You can do anything." NOPE. SORRY. Why can't these people simply behave themselves. "Make America Decent Again", my favorite sign at the DC Women's March.

As an avid consumer of liberal news I am no fan of Fox News but frankly, I don't care about office politics, which is what this has been reduced to, played out on multi media platforms. Those in the workplace who wake up each morning to mark their place in the world had better learn to grown a thicker layer of skin and get on with the day....oh, and give some more thought to short hemlines, tight skirts and skimpy tops. Or stop complaining. Ladies, you can't have it both ways. It's human nature.
EdgeNinja (Queens, New York)
Did we actually hear you say women shouldn't wear tight skirts if they don't want to be sexually harassed?
vova (new jersey)
why are the viewers so upset? Don't worry, there are many more other psychopaths who can replace departed "commentator".
