It was an absolute joy. An excellent group of performers bringing to life wonderful songs with superb orchestrations (and the trademark Encores! full orchestra) - this is the thrill of musical theater.
The Encores! series is one of the best things about living in NYC.
As a long time subscriber, there are some hits and some misses but where else to hear these glorious scores fully orchestrated!

I would have preferred to have read about the efforts in theater archeology required to put together the production. The process is referred to once and then dropped.

If you can get a hold of a printed program for the show it offers the information regarding the reconstruction of the libretto, etc. However, I was unable to find it on the Encores site. Perhaps you may have better results.
It was wonderful.

I agree with NYBrit: One reason this has languished in the backwaters of the Broadway revival catalog is that it's not very good. That said, everyone -- cast & crew -- give it a game shot. But in the end, it's more important as an historical curiosity than anything else.

Pure joy. Thank you, Encores!

Been reading about the great risks and work that went into this unique project for Encores, so what a joy to find out that it's paid off so well artistically! Congrats to everyone involved on this success.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Brantley that "The New Yorkers" is a Cole Porter bauble polished to a new shine. I would add ==and emphasize to my fellow tap dancing fans -- there there is a lot of tap here -- including a tap dancing machine gun fight!

Here's the thing. I'm a long-time Encores! aficionado/subscriber and I saw the opening last night. It's a good (not great) cast and whereas I applaud the commitment to recreate this piece, it's honestly not a great evening in the theatre. The piece itself is very slow and dated, the songs with a few exceptions are underwhelming especially for Porter. The audience reaction last night was warm but not as warm as usual for Encores (although Cyrille Aimee is a revelation)!
The night before I saw Musicals Tonight revival of "Anything Goes" at the Lion Theater at $33 a ticket. A wonderful evening. Fabulous songs, plot, staging and performances. Go see!

Seems to me this review was written by an "Anything Goes" producer.

Sadly I'm just a musical theater fan in search of a good night out...

An interesting take - for me, the book was virtually irrelevant. That incredible orchestra comes first, which puts this on a different planet than Musicals Tonight. But that's what makes horse races.
I saw and loved the dress rehearsal and BB clearly saw the show in even better shape than I did, so far. I'm going back to see it again - it's wonderful. Arnie Burton is hilarious and brilliant - the best in a very good cast. The music and costumes are drop dead wonderful. Enjoy!!

Saw it Wednesday and it's tons of fun... first rate cast and an orchestra with a huge string section.
