How Should Parents Teach Their Children About Race and Racism?

There are many arguments over whether children should learn about racism. However, I believe that children should be taught of racism to prepare them for their future encounters with racism and help them learn be more mature about the situation today. Children who are of age 5 should be taught of racism and different social status of different races. Racism is a big issue in many countries, and America is not an exception. Parents and teachers should educate their students to treat everyone equally and respectfully, preventing them from generating racist views towards other races. For example, if a group of kids were to exclude a student for being a different race from a young age, although they had learned about racism, they will still most likely behave the same way because their biased opinions have already been established. People are likely to judge others, and if they are not educated early on in their life of racism, they will continue to do so in the future. The consequences of not teaching children of racism is that they would have fixed their views of other races, leading to conflicts at school, work places, and etc. in the future. Racism is an important topic everyone should know and therefore should be taught to people of all ages.

I am living in Greece in a European country. Our continent has received the last four years a big wave of immigrants coming from Syria. The social balance is ruined and local are feeling threatened by the newcomers and very often we become witnesses of racist events. I can talk about my country and the causes of this racism reaction. Firstly, my country is in deep crisis and does not have the infrastructure to accommodate all these immigrants so the local are feeling that will lose their jobs and belongings. The same time I believe that is missing a good guideline to children from parents and teachers on how to respect people that have different race, religion, and beliefs from them. The same time we should teach and the newcomers that they should respect the new country that they are going to move. I do not think so there is an easy solution for this concept, but I believe that if all work hard then we can create a better world.

Racism is a very sensitive subject. I feel parents should educate their children about race and teach them how to be respectful and kind towards one another. Parents should be telling their kids to show kindness, act mature, and treat everyone the way you would wan't to be treated. Its a piece of cake. Its important for parents to teach their kids how to act/ treat others. When a child shows that, "public school had left her with such a one-dimensional view of history" (Harvey 1) people should make the effort to show the children that every race is equal.

I feel like the best time to tell your child about racism is when they can actually understand and get a better grasp on the situation. This situation should be brought up when he/she will experience or witness a circumstance with this problem as the main focus. How their parents go about the situation should be to give them a little history and background knowledge about racism and slavery and how to avoid judging others and becoming what many call "Racist."
The consequences of children that aren't being taught about racism will affect them personally because they will be bias about the situation and won't know how to take care of the situation in a proper manner. Another consequences is that they’re just gonna be racist, judgemental, and cause trouble.
Mike Evans (Arkadelphia, AR)
I think that racism has been a problem for millenniums, and yes it has been taught. When you think about it, it could only be taught. No one is born thinking a certain way about a person's skin. And if it has been learned, isn't there a way fo rit to be unlearned. It's just ashamed that we don't treat everyone with the same respect. Just like the gold rule says "treat others the way you want to be treated." If we want someone to respect us we should respect them and treat them for the person they are, not what we expect them to be.

Racism has always been an issue in our country. Most people learn racism from their parent's which is terrible and i think that we should change that because parents should teach their kids to treat others with respect and love. It does not matter because we are all under the same god. Race is just an excuse to treat other unfairly because they think that their race is the superior race. But no race is really superior because we are humans. Like you can't really teach them about racism at an early age but parent's should teach their kids about respect at an early age and then when they grow later on in history involving racism they will be able to learn and develop from it.
Ke'Arlyn A. (AR)
The consequences of children no being taught about racism is that if they grow up not knowing how awful it is then they might start to see it in a different perspective. When children are not taught how racism is wrong then it increases the chance of them becoming a racist themselves. I think that parents should sit their kids down and talk to them around the time that they get ready to enter school (about the age of 5 or 6), because this is around the time that they will start to see it and experience it for themselves. In my opinion when discussing the topic of racism, they should give examples show or tell their children how it was done and the affects that it has on people and their families. At the same time, I think that when explaining racism to their children it should also be filtered, but it also should not me downplayed.
David. S (US, AZ)
I don't think we should teach them anything early on. You see, when we talk about racism we're making it an even larger problem. Why not instead of teaching kids, that was a black man, or that was a white man, why don't we just say men? "But George Washington also owned black people as slaves." I think we should replace it, like owned people as slaves, and later on, teach them about race. Kids at these young ages won't be able to comprehend anything you're even talking about. I think we should wait until they're older down the line. It's like trying to teach a new born dog to listen to orders like a police dog would. It just can't happen because they won't comprehend it. However, racism will degrade over time, it always has.

I believe that we should change that because most people learned racism from their parents and it's bad because we should learn how to love and treat others the way you would want to be treat......I agree with yu paulett

Racism has always been a problem in our nation as it is a judgement of race and hatred toward a group of people. Parents should be willing to inform the younger generation that there is nothing that should allow us to differentiate a group of people from others, as we are all the same under God. Racism is just an excuse that has been developed to treat others unfairly and a way to change that is to treat others with respect. If we don't have respect, we are unwilling to accept others for who they are. I have always questioned why do we criticize and treat others differently due to physical judgements. Why do we let factors such as race and sex limit our respect toward a group of people? Learning about race and the unfair treatment in our history has motivated me to speak up and recognize that we all deserve to be treated equally. When we focus on physical features, we overlook people's personality and it blocks our ability to see their beauty. We are quick to judge and mistreat others. When our social status allows us to feel powerful, we forget how to treat others. Our treatment shouldn't be forgotten if we are taught to have respect and exposing a child to interact with different people is a step toward equality. That is why it is essential to reflect respect upon children. The narrative of Frederick Douglass's life as a slave is one that truly shows the injustice of slavery and racism. It exposes readers to enforce unity in everyone because the consequences are severe.
Yesenia (NYC)
I think everyone at a young age should learn not necessarily about racism, but of respect. Treat others how you would like to be treated and allow children to be exposed to different cultures and ethnicities and learn that there's beauty in all of them. No "race" is superior to others because ultimately we're all humans. As time progresses children will learn of the history involving racism and be able to learn from it. With this parents can enforce the respectful nature towards others (regardless of their appearances, economical standards and or traditions) already established, as for them not to commit the same injustices others did in the past, and even now, that hurt so many. I never really did have a realization as a child regarding racism or sexism, living in NYC, a city so diverse with many cultures allowed me to notice that despite our differences we are all here, we breathe, we work, we learn, we progress and it's time we progress from hatred to love and respecting each other. P.S I recommend reading The Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan it's a meaningful and deep piece of writing describing how we're all on Earth, in this together, and it's time we act more unified before we destroy each other and ourselves.

Based on the article, I have known about racism my entire life. I grew up in a humble neighborhood, when almost all of the people are different such as black people, indigenous, mestizo and even foreigners like Asians. Since I have had memory, my mother always has taught my brothers and me to respect every single living being in the world especially all of different people. I believe that we are equals and we should have the same rights and treatment. The racism is unacceptable. It is sad when I think that there are millions of people with these thoughts and their lives are based on hate, discrimination, envy or rejection to each other. Every parent must talks and teaches their children to respect each livening being since they are just babies literally due to every behavior comes from home. That is our responsibility with our children or in my case with my future children, respect and accept all different kinds of people, personality, culture, sexuality etc.

I have some idea about racism, but my parents teach me to respect each other . I described racism as someone who hates someone for the color of their skin, their religion or has more opportunity than other . I think that parents should teach their kids to love and respect other people.
Lawrence 4D (YC)
In my opinion parents should teach their children racism so that they will know the meaning of the word before they can use it because racism can take much form such as jokes, comments that cause offence or hurt. Most serious racism can result in act of physical abuse or violence. It can be directly or indirectly. So parents should help their children know the basic things about racism.
madeline 4d (YC CLIP)
Racism is a mentality people think they are superior than a another people. Racism is not about black and white (skin) It’s general for example men and women, Immigrants, weights, etc.… The way parents can teach their children explicitly about racism from very young ages to counter negative social messages and build a sense of identity. They should all be equal and have equal worth. I agree with George Washington “All children have to accept messages at face value and see racial equality the right way.

In my opinion, every parents should teach their kids about racism. Color doesn't matter to judge other people. We should respect every people and every religion. In past, people faced lot of racism. For example, Martin Luther king fought for racism. He is a great example for racism. Now our country is so develop. Maximum people change their mentality. They don't care about color or religion. But some people still same. For example, vandalized Jewish cemeteries and mosques on fire, police officers who terrorize and endanger black and Latino children, and engineers from India being shot. We still face lot of things about racism. People should not do this. Personally, i never do this. My parents always teach that don't judge others people about their look or religion because it doesn't matter how really they are. So i think every parent's should teach their children's about equality and racism. We all are equal. We all have same rights. So we should respect and love all of people.

I read an article by Caroline Cresson “How Should Parents Teach Their Children about Race and Racism” This article is very important in this moment in the society. I think some parents do that because they don’t want to lose original race, color, riches and religion , Some of them, They don’t want to mix a race .They teach their daughters and sons to marry with people the same skin color. They explain their children to stay around the same group. They teach children to play with people the same origin, same church, school, religion. The same opportunity. They explain children about mix race. One year ago I read a book about Martin Luther King Junior in the south The United states .They teach children about white and black. I learned a lot of about that. Some parents don’t do that because they think different about life. They don’t want to separate a people no more slave .people can live together. They teach the good things about life. People can mixt with another one. Some parents think opposite idea their children should stay with people the same race, same skin color same religion, same school and sexuality. I think racism will never end in the world because people cannot do anything for racism.

The first school is always home and children are the mirror of all what is happening in their families. The responsibility of parents is more than to provide what their kids could need. Parents should teach their children all about Racism, speaking about situations that happen in the news, also sharing experiences in their communities, schools, works and streets. It is very important to build conscience in the kids about the feelings and the respect forward all people, without taking to importance of the skin color, status, religious or gender.
Gleydis 4D (YC CLIP)
I think children need to be taught about racism early on because they’ll understand the importance of racism. Parents are supposed to talk about racism to their children every time they can. I think that that is why children grow up with racism because their parents never talk about racism and their differences.

I have never been a racist because I do remember have had many realizations about racism and sexism as a child. I think that white children should be taught about this topic on an early age due to I was taught and I learned there are different kinds of racial groups in our society and that black people are created equals to white people. Every human being has the same characteristics, feelings and thoughts. I grew up believing that discriminating people by the shape of their appearance or the color of their skin makes them uncomfortable and hurts their feelings. I have always interacted with black people considering that they are not different to me.

This is a topic very important and subtle topic. I think that racism is the main enemy of the world. It is clear that it never will end. It is why we are in a continual war around the world. But, what is the best way to solve it? I think that parents should teach their children from early age. I have not done any act of racism or sexism. I respect every person like they are. Humans learn most of the things when they are children. They take actions from their parents as an example. Particularly I agree that children need to learn about racism early. I believe they can understand, it depends how their parents do it. In my opinion, parents should teach with a positive example of their favorite’s hero. The consequences if the children do not have any knowledge about racism are rejection of much of society; in an extreme situation they can hurt anyone for racism. We can help to open those people minds.

In my opinion, parents should discuss this topic with their children when they are young ages because these topic provides them knowledge about there is no discrimination between any races and colors these days. If they teach their children about racism in early ages, they will know the meaning of racism. In addition, parents have to teach them not to be racist because begin racist makes other people feel bad and you doing social crime which is oppose from law. Some parents discuss their children about how their political leader was racism in their country before. However it is not necessary to talk about this case because main things parents have to teach them all human beings are the same underneath their skin and teaching those values of inclusion, equality and everyone receive the same equal rights.

Racism is a big theme that parents need to talk and let their kids know about what it is and how much damage it does. Nowadays statistics has increased. We need to remember the past and move on, teach our child how to love others and accept their differences. That is why the diversity of humanity is so unique. When we accept others, we accept ourselves
Andrea 4D (YC-CLIP)
I think that any child should be taught about the consequences of discriminating against others, whether it’s for their skin color, their religion or any other characteristic. Parents should be clear with their kids and make them understand that offending others is not something to applause for. I genuinely think that children don’t develop racist or xenophobic tendencies by themselves; they are surely seeing that behavior in someone else and reflecting it with their peers. So, we should look at what they consider big influences, like their favorites cartoons, or who they follow as role models, to find out if they’re just imitating. Whatever the source of the problem is, children should stay separated from it; because once they enforce that kind of believe it’s hard to persuade them to have caring and moral thoughts.
Wilgen 4D (YC CLIP)
In my opinion, parents should teach their children about equality and differences about the color of the skin. Even though parents should be respectful when they are talking about other people, they must be careful because this kind of idea can be misunderstood by their children. Although they need to teach about great events in the story about these different people and the great things that they did and what they will do. Great examples can be Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington Carver and the Civil War between the Southern and Northern States. We need to teach equality and respect because if we don’t have these things, our society can be destroyed.
Ifeoma 4D (YC)
As I struggled with this idea of parental responsibility, I think with young children ages 2 to 4, you don’t have to go far at these ages. It is all about pointing and showing. It’s about making differences, real, normal and equal. From ages 5 to 10, as children develop, empathy can naturally occur, but we can aim the direction of that empathy. I feel we should teach our kids to love and not to hate, that we are all created by one God, and that skin color shouldn’t determine how you treat a person.
angie 4D (YC CLIP)
Since we are children we are able to listen and talk, we can hear about what adults say even though we don’t completely understand, we can have an idea which we develop as we are growing, I think the common believe of children between 3 and 5 years get the information in a quicker way is true, that is way we should talk to them openly with no secrets because they are little adults that later on will create an effect in our society.
If we talk to our kids about their sexuality since they are little they wouldn’t have why be lost when they experience that kind of situations, same happens with social danger and social differences, we must let them know that we all are different and that we must respect.
Marlon 4D (YC CLIP)
I agree that white children need to know all about racism because sometimes when they do not know it, they begin to see many differences between them and other children. For this reason now there are many problems in the world. Parents should teach their children about racism when children are able to understand what racism means. When children do not know anything about racism, then begins the social problems because children think that they are different from other.
Cristhian 4D (YC CLIP)
I think this topic is very important, parent have the duty to teach their children the importance to respect and value other person who has different aspect than you. Some children are raised by parents who hate other people and become this kids a hater too. Why do they have to hate someone? What is the reason that you hate someone? No matter where are you come or even what skin color you have. In front of Gods eyes we all are equal. The parents have to teach their children with clears examples and let them see how the world is, as my parents taught me to value other person, to respect them in every single ways, no matter how they look. Some people discriminate others, who have different aspect than them, but this discrimination can become in a critical case, some of this people who are discriminated could commit suicide because they cannot hold the pressure and then they look for the easy way to stop it.
VIELKA 4D (YC CLIP)
I think that the parents should teach their kids to remember the past and move on. We should teach them to love, and not to hate doesn’t matter how age the kids have. Also teach them that we are all equal, no one man is better than the other. Another person skin color shouldn't determine how you treat them.
Nasiba3D (YC CLIP)
I believe that all children should be taught about racism not just whites. Even though the biggest racial difference is between whites and other races, white children are not the only ones who need to be taught. People are all equal no matter what race or ethnicity they belong to, so they must all be treated equal; when it comes to rewards and punishments. Each child is different and each parent is different, but all kids should be taught the fist opportunity they get. Whether it's because they made a mistake and said the wrong thing or because they witnessed someone doing so. The consequences of children not being taught correctly could lead to more discriminatory arguments and disrespect, which definitely isn't right.
nurun 3D (ycclip)
In my opinion parents should always give their children well education because education can help them to come out from racism. Children's are not born with bad things. They learn racism from others. We should teach our kids to move on from racism systems, and we should teach them about love not to hate because we all are equal in the eyes of God and we should respect each other's. Live with hate and hurting others isn't good. If someone does something bad with us, we should always forgive them. It's really good to teach our children that they not treat others with racism because everyone have same and equal rights.

Personally ,i think parents have a major responsibility to inform and educate their kids about race and racist in our society during their early age. Nobody were born racist but it’s a physical and mental boundaries irresponsible people spread on our mind. Kids usually practicing what they learn from home ,school and social network .As parents we have the obligation to teach them how to have a positive mentality by having them understand that every human being are equal whatever their age ,race and religion. It is important to explain and inform them about the anti-discrimination revolution we used to get in the past without teaching them to have a revenge feeling. Thereby our kids won’t be able to get influenced too easily by those negative issues in our society. I believe if all parents take their responsability ,we should have better relationship to each other in our society independently of our race, religion, level of education and skin color.
FARHANA 3D (YC-CLIP)
Racism and ethnic discrimination has been major problem in the world. Because of racism so much blood was shed in history, there has no specific way of describing it. I think parents should always discuss with their children about race and racism because parents are the first and best teacher for their children. Any children are not born with bad things. They learn racism from others. In early age of children parents can teach them the significance of race and racism. They can learn fast and understand what is better and worse in future. Without discrimination of skin color, gender, religion, and nationality children should be taught to accept and honor everybody. If someone does something worse, we will teach the children that we should forgive them. It is high thinking to prepare them that we all are same and identical. If parents teach them properly, the children will make their opinion properly about it and build a wonderful world.

I think parents, should discuss racism with children at an age where the parent knows the child will understand. An accurate age could be 6 years old and older.

In my opinion we should teach our children that we are all equal and we should respect each other. I think we should teach our children accept all people equally with love and respect without compare skin color black and white, nationality, and gender. In fact, all parents should teach the children in family about racism when they grow up. When our children start going to school and playground they meet different kinds of people we should teach them all are equal in eyes and should not heat them if they do something wrong.

When I was little people told me that hunting wasn't a girl thing and that hunting is for guys. I proved them wrong and continued to hunt and i'm even better than some of the guys.
Not only white kids should be needed to learn about racism at an early age, every kid doesn't matter if your white, Mexican, black , Asian, etc. every kid needs to be taught on how to treat others right and respectfully not based on their skin tone and gender.
Parents should start teaching their young ones when the kid knows how to talk and comprehend around the age of 3-5. Teaching your kids at an early age can help the child adapt quickly and get use to treating everyone equally as a child and it will rub on when they turn into an adult.
The government should open up a small class allowing the students that haven't been taught about racism attend the class and learn how valuable everyone is. Everyone needs to be treated equally not based on their skin tones or their gender, they also must completer 4 hours of the class for one week.

To be honest, when I was a child, I was raised to treat others the way I would like to be treated, and respect others. That was a rule in the family. As I grew older, I eventually learned about slavery and racism that occurred during history and to this day. Back then it wasn't much of a big issue, but nowadays, anything can be so controversial, and there is so much on the topic everywhere on TV, radio, newspaper, etc. Those moments of being taught to respect people, all people, equally and with fairness helped shape me to be a respectful, kind, and humble person. To treat others equally and whenever someone becomes racist to me, I keep quiet and move along because only talking back doesn't resolve the problem rather it pushes it even further. How would I set an example to others who surround me if I talk back when the point is to get rid of racism? I also disagree that it should not just be white children who should be taught about racism, but other racial groups too. We all have a part in this. This can help reduce racism from happening. I think parents should discuss this topic as their children grow by facing the problems on how it was instigated, and how it should be resolved. Children will confused on what is going on due to their ignorance. What would they know what to do when they face a situation that involves racism?

In my opinion, I believe we should teach our children at very early age love to each other. In America, we live around different nationalities. The race has always been a big part of our society, it is always happening no matter where we go. The different races should not be hated or disrespected but instead, it should be loved. At the end of the day we are all human and because of that, we should love each other. Race should not be used to divide who we are. Because if you look closely there are similarities between each race. We could teach our children to stop having negative attitudes towards a different race or culture instead, we will be able to tell our children to be more respectful of toward each other.

In my opinion nobody in this world born with the idea of racism. The environment of a society and family can make a person to become raciest. Also a child can learn from their family about the equality. I think parents are the main source where children learn about recism. If parents teach their children how to behieve with others then it's easier because, at first children learn from their parents. Moreover, it's better if parents started to discuss with their children about recism to avoid the recial discriminate. Finally, it's important for all of us to agree that we all are equal in this world.

I think all those moments of racism have changed in relation to when I was a little boy, but they have not disappeared. In fact, today parents should teach their children about racism, respect for others and everything related to the child's mental growth, regardless of whether it is white, black, Latin, etc. I think it's a very complicated subject for a young child to assimilate it, so that is why I believe that values would be a great tool, at least until the child asks or feels any curiosity about it .Aside from parents, teachers in schools play a very important role in the children's perception of how they see things.

I think that all the young people have to be taught about that everybody is equal. We live in a country with many different people whether by race or religion; we need to socialize with different people. Not teaching children about racism means going back to the old days where the people were enslaved and treated for their skin color, sex etc.

The theme of reacism is a very complicated , but with which we see day by day, many more in a city like New York which is a cosmopolitan city. In my opinion, all parents should teach and begin to educate our children little by little about this topic from the first moment they start school because that is when they are going to start socializing with other children and know different types of Skin, cultures, etc. The teacher number one of our children are the parents. It is important from infancy to infuse those values. We can not delegate all the obligation to the school or teachers of the values of our children, because then they will grow up with problems and the fault will be directly ours.

In my opinion I think that we don’t have to teach any children about race and racism. The world has to change and not all the time we are going to live with racism. The world lives a moment where the person get discriminated without reason. The past has to be in the past every day is a new day.

In my opinion parent should inculcate their children before to start school, love and respect for all people, but above all must teach them that all people have the same rights not matter color of skin, religion or where are you from. Children need to know about the harms that some people believe to be more superior than others.
Marie 3D (ycclip)
Parents supposed to introduce their children in a best way to talk about Race and Racism. Parents need a higher psychology to help children to understand well these words, Race and Racism. It’s important that parents define both words for their children and explain them that people come from different places, we are equal and we should be treated the same. Parents have to say there are no difference between white and black; we all are human being whereupon children will be able to understand the word Racism. In my opinion is a good thing to all parents to educate their children about Race and Racism, and the earlier your start talking with your children about, and the more conscious our part in it, the better chance our children should understand to that fairness and equality idea.

In my opinion parents should always educate children well and talk about how it is, and what problems can cause racism, many parents do not teach you to grow up with hatred and that same as they did to those parents that hatred. They teach it to their children. That's why the children have to talk about that there is to teach it not to live with hate is not good and to be a racist person is not good or that one believes are hurting others if it is, but the worst damage you are doing yourself and you provoke yourself. It is good to speak to the children of a calm and reflective manner so that they understand and will not speak things that can do damage to them if not more good to use good words that is not racist so that the children grow up with a good mentality and that they are clear That is the racism and what the consequences that can leave.

In my opinion I feel worried . I need to tell my children’s about what is the racism in the past. We can’t do again the equal action that is in the past because the people have the same right not important what color with have our skin. Everybody have as the equal right and have good feelings. We must respect the people and freedom that gives us this country. We need to make a different person with our actions and teach our children’s with these actions.

In my opinion, I think that you should start teaching our children about racism from the moment they start school, because they will begin to socialize with other children of different races and cultures. That is when they will start to ask questions, that's why I think that's the best time to talk and explain little by little about this topic. I also think parents should teach about racism in a way that children know about it and will not do or treat others in a derogatory way.

I think we can teach our children about who are the people around us. We can explain about what happened with slaves and segregation, and tell our children how they feel if they were slave, and A lot of people were treated unfairly, mistreat physical and emotional. The children understand we are human beings.

The issue of racism has always been a subject of debate and much conflict. Because of the problem of racism, so much blood has been shed in human history, that there would be no specific way of describing it. The main factor that has contributed to the further spread of racism has been such a culture that believes of being more superior to others, only because of the color of their skin, because of their economic or social status, which is totally false. What we are not recognizing is that all human beings were created equal. What is society is the individual, since the result of society, is the sum of each individual. Firstly, what we must do as individuals is to change our way of thinking, the way of feeling and the way of acting. In this way we then will have the right capacity to educate our children to become better citizens, and to have a better society, in which we all live together, instead of living in a world of separatism believing ourselves more superior than others. Here the main problem is psychological, until we begin to transform ourselves psychologically, the problem of racism will never be eradicated.

In my opinion I feel like that we should never teach are kids to hate even if someone does something bad to you and to not hold grudges always forgive and that none is less everyone is equal and it does not matter about skin tone.

I feel like we should teach our kids to remember the past and move on. We should teach them to love, and not to hate. And that we are all equal. No one man is better than the other. Another persons skin color shouldn't determine how you treat them.
