Does Better Sports Equipment Unfairly Improve Athletic Ability?

Nike's new custom designs show for Olympic level runners is both a good and bad thing for sports. It is good because it allows for better times but a bad thing would be they also bring unfair advantages to some runners that don't have the newest shoes. In the Olympic games this negative is less applicable because it is more likely for these runner to spend around the same money then for a couple to buy outdated shoes. But in a more common situation where there are underprivileged schools or programs that complete against wealthy programs there will be many cases in which the people with the newest footwear will have an advantage.
This problem is not only present in running but virtually every other sport. The newest baseball bats come with new technological advancements that allow a batter to get a better "pop" on the ball. Bats like those can range from two hundred to 4 hundred dollars. This means that those who can't afford to buy the newest bat would be at a disadvantage to the people who can.
In every sport there is a situation like this but when we look at situation that have adult competing where they are in top performance this is less applicable because no matter how good shoes or bat raw skill is what determines the outcome of a game not the newest equipment.
So if i were to answer if better sports equipment unfairly improves athletic ability I would say yes of course it does but it is a minor enhancement and as of now no show can give you skill just enhance.
Bryce Duke (Japan)
I feel that it doesn't matter what shoes your wear, it weather they are comfortable for you. Because for an example in soccer the two best players in the world run fast, jump high, and shoot the ball hard into the net, but they have totally two different kinds of shoes. Ronaldo wears Nike and Messi wears Adidas. I think a sport that has improved equipment is soccer, they came out with new and improved socks and cleats. I think baseball equipment gives an unfair advantage with the equipment because, if you can't afford a certain type of equipment that could hinder your game. Some parents have a virtue of parsimony because soccer cleats are so expensive. Some soccer cleats are so expensive it's like buying a new I-Phone 7 Plus.

Better sports equipment can unfairly improve athletic ability
jasmine d (Illinois)
I feel there are more important topics to discuss rather than runners shoes.
Peter C. (Chicago IL)
In my opinion I think that your natural abilities are what helps you run a marathon. You do not need shoes that help you run faster because it would be unfair to others in the marathon.
Isaiah T. (Illinois)
I think that certain shoes can give you an advantage but wont guarantee you a certain win in a running event or marathon. I also believe that its the athlete not the equipment that is the key focus to a sport.
Sabrina A (brooklyn)
Nike's new custom designed shoe for athletics is beneficial because athletics are always using their strength to excel in their field, and this shoes will help athletics not get injured as frequently as they do.
Lidia .S. (Chicago, IL)
Better sports equipment doesn´t improve athletic ability. Athletic ability only depends on how well the athlete plays, and how well the equipment is. While some highschools have better equipment then others, the equipmen they have doesn´t make their school better then anybody else. I belive the only unfair advantage a athlete can have is if they take steroids.
Mia S,Valeria S,Jada P (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I think that some sports equipment can unfairly improve the athletic ability. When runners have to race, I think it's unfair that if one of the runners has a mechanical running leg, that's an advantage to them.
Angela G (Illinois)
I believe better sports equipment fairly improves athletic ability when competing. There is a reason on why they make this equipment, to support the athlete.
Benjamin E, Martese R. (Chicago)
I don think equipment helps a player cheat or anything like that. Its really just the ability of the player that helps them.
Fabian G (Illinois)
Nike's new custom-designed shoe for the Olympic level runners is a bad idea because some runner can have good footwear with carbon fiber and others don't. Carbon fiber can make the runners less tired and let them run for even more. If one runner has shoes with carbon fiber and the other doesn't then the one with the carbon fiber mid sole will have a better advantage than the other athlete with no carbon fiber mid sole. It is unfair for the athletes to have different footwear
Antwon s (illinois)
In my opinion I think that some sports equipment unfairly improve athletic ability because i feel like some shoe equipment do effect athletic ability
Victoria R. (1231 s damen ave)
In my opinion, sports equipment can unfairly improve athletic ability. Some shoes are more comfortable than others and can, therefore, become an advantage; however, athleticism alone does play a role in performance. Shoes can't be the only factor when it comes to athletic ability. For example, a professional runner will outrun the average person. This is because of practice and experience.
Joshua L, Martin Z, Jorge R (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion Nike shoes help people preform better, and should be allowed in races. There isn't any reason why they should be banned.
Aaron.S Yobany.C (Chicago IL)
In my opinion I believe that the shoes will help some people, or do nothing for the person. The shoes will give a advantage to some people or a disadvantage for some people.
Gizelle H, Jocelyn V. (Chicago, IL)
Personally I don´t think better equipment gives athletes better ability because it depends on the whether or not the athlete wants to try their best. You could give an athlete the best equipment and they probably won´t do good. It all depends on their motivation.
Jada L (Illinois)
In my opinion special equipment does unfairly improve athletic ability. If these shoes had no way in improving an athletic performance Nike the company would not be a huge brand as it is today.Additionally if these shoes had no special abilities it would not matter which athletes get what.If these shoes really give no improvement abilities there would not be such an outrage.
Andrea H (Il)
In my opinion, sports equipment does and doesn't unfairly improve athletic ability because when having a marathon we would never know if weather everyone is carrying shoes that would help them run faster or when playing in a game. I don't think technology determined how the athlete plays. If you're playing for the NBA, they wont be looking at how the equipment works on you or not, they want to see if have any talent to make the team. Having technology can be unfair and harmful. You would never know if something bad would happen and damage something causing the equipment to miss function and can potentially harm you. People just play by the runs. Plain and Simple.
Ke'nya A, Ashley T. (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I believe that sports equipment does not improve athletic ability, but skill in that sport improves athletic abilities.
Nia J, Ashley S (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I believe that better sports equipment does not unfairly improve athletic ability. It is all on how well the athlete wears the shoes. If you buy the cheapest shoes It wouldn't hurt the runner because the runner is wearing the shoes so he has all the control over how she/ he uses them.
Ethan C (IL)
In think that having better equipment in a certain sport is better for the athlete because it supports them in a way that other sports equipment doesn't. However, some equipment can be unfair to other athletes because they wont have that same advantage as one with better equipment. They will be depending on those special sport equipment.
Terrance H (UIC College Prep)
In my personal opinion shoes help you a lot when you are running a marathon. They really should not ban a shoe for it having a specific material that helps you. If you wear the shoes that help you, then the runners will be grateful. A runners shoe, and his or her skills can help you alot.
Kenya M (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, better sports equipment technology does not improve the athletes ability because it depends on the quality of the athlete; that is like saying putting on jordans will make you automatically dunk into a basketball net.
Orlando (Alvarado)
Nike’s new custom-designed shoe for Olympic level runners are good things for sports, they will help the athlete reach their full potential. If a good athlete had shoes with holes in them would the athlete wouldnt be able to achieve his/her potential.
Marcus J (Chicago IL)
I think its not the equipment that makes the athlete, but the other way around. All it takes is a lot of hard work and grit. So at the end of the day you could have the best tech known to man but if you don't train you its useless!
Chirah (chicago)
In my opinion, sports equipment does not improve an athlete ability. I feel like if a person has talent and passion for a sport then he/she will do good at the sport, however. sports equipment is a big help to an athlete because it gives the person support and make them feel comfortable. Sports equipment is needed for certain sports like: football, track, and basketball but sports equipment is not needed for every sport that's why sports equipment isn't that necessary. The athlete is the one thats really important
Jahleel W (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I think sport's equipment doesn't improve the athlete's ability to perform. It's the athlete's responsibility to become better physically so they can perform better in the activity they're in. They have to train themselves so they can become naturally better at the sport they're in; the equipment they use is just ,most of the time, an accessory to show off to the public. Although it may slightly improve the athlete's ability, it's overall that person's work ethic and strength that improves their abilities.
Brandon A, Michael R (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion I think better sport equipment gives an athlete an unfair advantage, say like a person has a better equipment and the other person doesn't the same equipment the other is going to win. Also, I think having a bigger shoe company gives you the most out of everything.
Nicholas C. (Chicago.IL)
In my opinion, I believe that Nike's new custom-designed shoes for Olympic level runners are good and bad for the sport. They are bad for the sport because they give an unfair advantage for the people with the new shoes. They are also good because they can help the runners, who are not as fast, have a higher chance of winning the race.
Tim Y. (Chicago)
In my opinion, I feel like Nike´s new custom-designed shoe for the Olympic level runners is an good thing for sport because skilled athlete deserve better equipment for the sport they do. The custom-designed shoes can help improve the athlete ability to do better and fast. It also can help the athlete has an higher chance of winning ,and the shoes can provide an comfortable cushion for the athletes.
Georgia F. (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I feel as though it depends on the sport that the equipment that is use in. But from the knowledge I know not every sports athlete can improve themselves by the equipment they have, similarity, they can only improve by hard work.
Khamari C. (Chicago IL)
In my personal opinion shoes,or any other equipment for that matter, does not define an athlete its the the athlete who determines that for them self in a sense
Denis c (chicago)
In my opinion, I believe that the more new and advanced equipment the better. Although, there might be some downside. Some people might not like new and improved equipment, but there are many other athletes that need support for their shoes in order to be running. New equipment gives the athletes to have a better chance on running faster and more comfortable because of the support in the shoes.
Kevin (Chicago, IL)
I think that Nike's sports equipment does not improve the athletic ability because it isn't about the equipment that matters. It's the way the equipment is used. If you get the best equipment, it doesn't mean your always the best with it. Skill is more important that equipment.
Jordan J (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, Nike's new custom shoe for the Olympic level runners is a bad thing for the sport. I say this because the shoes allow the user to run at a faster pace, and running at a faster pace is unfair because other competitors don't have the same advantage as others.
jamal C (chicago ILL)
in my opinion, I dont think sports equipment unfairly improves athletic ability. You can have the best gear and still not preform well.
Roberto (Chicago)
In my opinion, sports that have improved equipment technology is unfair because the equipment makes the athlete have a better performance. However, companies also compete with each other when it comes to selling their products , so they want their products to be better than the other one. Then, when companies improve their equipment, it makes the the athlete to have a better performance.
Daevion W (chicago)
sports equipment can unfairly improve athletic ability; however it can also even help less skilled player goes against a higher skilled player. This why equipment can make can be disadvantage to others.
Yelenia Rodriguez (13th Damen)
It depends if sports equipment supports the improvement of the athletic ability because some people react differently with the running shoes or like some people use different equipment for that sport that they are playing. For example baseball people use cups and soccer people use those shoes with the pointy things at the bottom.
Angelina S., Emily A., and Yelenia R (Chicago, IL)
Personally, the Nike's new custom-designed shoe for Olympic level runners could be a good thing, and also the shoe could be a bad thing. The shoe could be good to people who may own it and bad for people who do not, which leaves an unfair advantage.
Ysela O. (Chicago)
I feel like better sports equipment does improve athletic ability depending on what the sport is. I say depending on what the sport is because If you are playing tennis and the racket is broken then the player probably won't play as good as they usually do because the racket is broken.
Darrien A. Parks (Chicago, Illinois)
Nike new custom-designed show for Olympic level runners is a bad thing for the sport because it is basically cheating since there are j-shaped carbon fiber blades/springs underneath the shoes, which allows the runner to have a running advantage because there is more explosion to their jump as the runner is running.
AKA DARP;)
Camran T Hall (Cameroon)
In my opinion I think shoes help some, hurt some, and changes nothing for some. I believe that "Look good, feel good, play good" applys to only some. If you have no natural ability at the sport you have the shoes for then you will not perform well to begin with , but if you do and you buy shoes or any equipment for that sport then they will help as much as you believe they do. But at teh end of teh dya if you go buy some jordnas but never played ball before you cant expect to dunk form teh free throw line. just saying
D.J (Chicago)
I believe that advanced sports equipment will improve an athletes ability to perform. If a marathon runner had shoes that had springs or any type of substance of any kind in the shoes then they could run faster, most likely. Because the shoe enhances their performance and their ability to run.
Nikiya,N (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I believe that both the athlete and the sports equipment plays a role when it comes to athletic ability. If the athlete is good with the sports they're playing, they shouldn't have to worry about doing terrible when it comes to that sport. However, I do believe that unsuited equipment plays a factor in the athlete's potential for the sport, as well. If the athlete has bad shoes, terrible helmets, or uncomfortable body suits, they probably wont be able to show their full potential in that sport.
Lesley M, Cashay T, Rosa C (Chicago,Illinois)
I think that Nike's new custom-designed shoe for Olympic level runners is a good thing for the sport because it allows the runners to run more comfortably, which is caused by the cushion inside of the shoe.
Cesar O (Chicago ,IL)
In my opinion about Nike's new custom-designed shoe for Olympic level runners is neutral because if many people hear about this product then they would be influenced to buy the product for the extra boost, but if only like one person has it then they woulds have a big advantage but it mostly depends on the runner not the equipment.
Aaliyah N, Marlene M, Nancy E (Chicago, IL)
I agree, that better sports equipment unfairly improve athletic ability because if one person have on nike's and another person have on jordan's it's a possibility that one might run faster than the other. It depends on the type of equipment you are wearing to improve your athletic ability of that sport. Also, if two people are wearing the same equipmen than it might not affect them as much.
Delilah M. (Illinois)
Nike´s new custom-designed shoes for Olympic level runners is not only a good or bad thing, it is in between both good and bad because depending on the sport you play or how well trained the athlete is isn´t about the design of the shoes, it´s about if the athlete feels comfortable or not in the shoes and if the athlete is well trained or not
YeshuA ChAvez (60608)
Nike's new Custom designed shoe for olympic level runner is a good things for the sport because it helps improve the runner's ability. It is a good thing for the sport because those shoes prove that better sports equipment does help people improve their athletic ability.
Jordan Lira (60608)
Sports equipment doesn't fairly improve athletic ability because it just depends on how they play.
J. O (Chicago, IL)
I think, If someone actually needs this equipment to properly compete in any activity. They deserve some equipment. Even if they are beginners or not. You wouldn't throw a child in a pool and expect them to swim like a professional: They need equipment
Ronnae (chicago)
In my opinion, I feel like anyone just cant play a sport, even when there is good equipment. If a person has talent than they will be able to play even if they don't have expensive equipment. Having expensive equipment just makes the athlete performance a little better than before. Overall I believe if you are good at something at something you can use whatever to make your performance as good as you want it.
Oscar E (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, better sports equipment technology fairly improves an athletic ability because many companies fight over the better brand. It´s normal for companines to try out do the their rivals. Getting better equipment is the choice of their user; I believe better equipment gives the user the ability to go at a faster pace. Moreover, the equipment is something you choose to pick. It´s very fair in this stage.
L.W (Illinois)
Different foot gear can give runners an unfair advantage, and possibly make them win something that they did not truly earn.
A.Boyd (Chicago, IL)
In my opinion, I feel like equipment shouldn't define how good you are or how fast you can run. I disagree that certain equipment shouldn't be banned because people feel that it gives runners an advantage.
Reyna (Chicago)
Better sports equipment does not improve athletic ability because it all depends on the athlete. For instance like for baseball you can wear batting gloves and no batting gloves but that doesn't mean your gonna be a better athlete. The equipment used is more for safety, and to feel comfortable. I don't think that having better equipment helps an athlete performance.
frederick collins (chicago)
sports equipment can unfairly improve athletic ability however it can also even the odds when a less skilled player goes against a a little higher skilled player.
Carlos (Chicago, IL)
Better sports equipment unfairly improves an athletes performance, and better sports equipment gives an unfair advantage to the athlete.
Nancy E. (IL)
I don't agree with the statement, "better sports equipment unfairly improve athletic ability", because if you're an athlete and have good equipment, you'll be able to show good results. On the other hand, if you have torn running shoes and running a marathon, obviously your sport equipment affected your results. Therefore, if you have better sports equipment, you'll be successful.
mr (chicago)
In my opinion better sport equipment dose not unfairly improve athletic ability because it´s up to the persons skills that is using the equipment
Miguel (IL)
I believe that sport equipment doesn't affect the outcome of the persons athletic ability. The skills of a sport comes from the person. Not the type of equipment the person has. Its not like the equipment gives the person special abilities, and automatically makes the person good at a certain sport. For Example, If you give a kid who never played basketball the best equipment someone can buy. That kid is not going to automatically be the best basketball player there is. Therefore, I conclude that equipment doesn't affect a person athletic ability.
Andrew (Indiana)
In my opinion, I feel like if someone is good enough at what they do, they shouldn't need the absolute best or expensive equipment. However, well made items or customized items can give an advantage. For example, if one good runner has general training shoes because they can't afford expensive race shoes, they might have a slight disadvantage when it comes to racing against someone of the exact same level, yet has light, customized, well-made shoes.
Evelyn Rodriguez (California)
Many people disagree in this topic because they say its the athlete not the equipment or shoe. I say its partially the athlete but also, if the athlete is wearing shoes that are not helping it might effect its stamina, or even create an injury. Also, shoes are a big contributor to speed because the lighter the shoe the less weight you will have to carry, i mean it wont make a big difference in time but it will make a difference by a few seconds.
Alec Andrade (TEC)
Does better sports equipment unfairly improve athletic ability? No, it does not. Many people will agree that it is the athlete and not the equipment that performs but people will also disagree and say it is the equipment. When it comes down to it, it is the experience and determination of the athlete that will determine the outcome of their performance. It just depends on how much they want it, and what they’re willing to do to achieve it. Say there’s two athletes, one with football cleats to practice in and one without cleats. The athlete without cleats is going to have to learn what to do and what not to do to prevent him from slipping or falling. Or for the athlete with a bench press and squat rack, the athlete without that equipment is going to have to come up with alternative weights. He’s going to have to put rocks in a backpack and do pushups and squats like that just so he can keep up with the guy with weights. You’ve got to use your brain and make the best of your situation, the athlete who’s going to utilize everything they have such as their brain, their situation, and their determination will prevail. Not equipment.
Ang (California)
i think that equipment shouldn't be drawn anywhere when it comes to improving the athletes altheticism. The line, however, should be drawn once the equpiment basically does the work for the althlete or overpowers the purpose. For example, the new Nike may help your heels or foot by being more comfortable. In the sense of shoes, you could never get better, like I said, unless the shoe overpowers the purpose of excersicing and running. The commitment of the athlete also depends on it. If the athlete depends on the equpiment to make him/her stronger in the mind and body, then clearly he/she is not putting their full practice and attention span into the sport. People will agree and disagree but I feel like many will stand with me and anyone else who posted a comment on here. Somebody who set their mind to their sport, their effort, and their health will always prevail. Equipment is not the problem. It just depends on how much the althlete wants it and how much he/she is willing to do, not the equipment.

It just depends on how much they want it and how much they're willing to do to achieve it. For example, say there's two athletes one with cleats and one without. The athlete with cleats is just going to have to learn how to maneuver in a way so they don't slip and fall. Or the athlete with a bench press and squat rack, the athlete without that equipment is going to have to come up with alternative weights. I think that better sports equipment does not influence better athletes, because it’s usually the athlete that performs well or not, it doesn’t always depend on what brand of shoe their wearing, or where they got their sweat pants from. That’s why college scouts are always going out to different high schools, their looking for the talent within kids, they don’t really care what brand of clothing their wearing, they care about how that student performs in his or her sport. How do you think LeBron got to the NBA directly after high school? However, some people do speculate that if they wear the same brand of clothing as someone else that they can do what they can do no problem, but like I said it’s just speculations, theories that no-one can prove, so I think that better sports equipment does not influence better athletes, because many people can perform well without the use of all that sports gear and stuff. If anything the sports gear just helps the player feel good because not everyone can afford all that stuff. So no better sports equipment does not influence better players.
trevor (az)
Does better sports equipment improve the athletic ability? I think it does and that’s because, most athletes need a specific shoes that will help increase their speed and increase their playmaking ability. All NFL players have t wear cleats and that’s the spike under the shoe helps with the friction from the grass and increases your way of running and decreases the chance of falling down the lightning fast receiver, bolted past the receiver, and snagged the ball out of air, the dashed into the end zone. Same with basketball you need certain types of basketball shoes to stay attracted to the ground and have a less of a chance of falling down as well. Most NFL receivers wear football gloves to catch the ball better and even I tested how much the gloves help you ability to catch the ball. So after all equipment can make you a better player because with glove and cleats good luck running and catching.

For me, the athletics events like the number of participants grow up with technology, so I think it's normal that we can see new equipments in many differents selling point (Internet, Store, etc.).
BUT, I'm also thinking that in professionnal category (I don't involve paralympic games) the athlete haven't to enhance themselves with equipments and unfairly win against "normal" athletes.
To conclude, I think many equipments and energizing should be forbidden for professionnal (Like for biking for an example).
