"My favorite of the four was the first cup. It’s always the first cup."

I love really good coffee and as a result only drink the coffee I have roasted, ground and brewed at home.
My favorite is Geisha from the mountains of Guatemala. This coffee is originally from Ethiopia, the home of coffee. A few coffee roasters are now selling this coffee.

Why is it that some unfortunate people get "mugged" but never "cupped?"

I hope you use a reusable coffee mug for the last two coffees. recycle! reuse!

8:24am - Waiting for the streetcar my 2 yr old points to Starbucks and says, "Mama, buy coffee pllllllleeeease". Unfortunately I cannot grab a cup-to-go with her and my work bag. Not enough hands. It has to wait until I drop her off and then get to work when I can sit and calmly drink a cup. Love the article.

Hello Kat in Toronto. I wish I had a 'streetcar", aka trolley, to wait for. Instead, I must endure the bus and subway service here in Crooklyn. I am envious.

Cute story! I have four cups a day, too, but it's all from the same cup. The coffee I get in the morning at the deli gets sipped at and reheated in the microwave multiple times per day. By dinner time, the milk is all squanky but the coffee flavor is nice and concentrated. Perfect!

I'm drinking my first cup at about 6:45 AM as I read this piece. It always is the best.
My sister told me "I used to think our mother was a coffee fiend. Then I became a nurse and now I understand!"

Yes, that first cup in the morning!!! it sure hits the spot. But make mine a cup of strong tea--with milk, no sugar.

Fun. A worthwhile topic.
Was your first cup your favorite because you enjoyed it with your fiancee?

To JKF - what a lovely inspiring thought
Tune of You're the Cream in My Coffee
You're my first cup of coffee
You're what helps me get through
You're who I adore
Life would be a chore
If it weren't for you!
You're that shot of espresso
On that job interview
You perk up my mind
Life would be less kind
If it weren't for you!
There's no mistakin'
When I awaken
That pot we share dear
Tells me you'll be there dear
You're the froth on my latte
You're my best mug of brew
Since we set our date
When I caffeinate
I'd be lost, yes it's true
If it weren't for you!

I work with a group of Australians. they constantly ask me about my coffee drinking, hoping to entice me into saying "cau-fee", which they find hysterically funny.
Like many New Yorkers I'm good for a half dozen cups a day. Of course I'd drink 10W40 from our cafeteria if it was hot and free.

Hope you get the job!

Yes! The first cup is always the best.

I note that you say "cup" when you mean "mug", and a mug is two or more coffee cups. While researchers measure coffee intake in cups, who drinks coffee by the cup anymore? Nobody, because coffee is awesome. I just wanted to point out that we drink twice as much coffee as we used to just by supersizing the container.

I was thinking about that! I drink a 20- ounce cup of coffee at work, and go for two mugs at home on the weekends. But when I go to certain restaurants for brunch, I limit myself to 3 cup-size cups or I get too wired. What is funny is that I can drink as much caffeinated tea as I like and never get wired.

I believe that people would feel sooo much better if they didn't depend on caffeine to wake them up. Drink coffee Monday, you're going to need it Tuesday to feel awake. I know. I've given up ALL forms of caffeine. What a relief.
2
Wish I could. I aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night, but without caffeine, I am still way too tired.

I know what you mean about the first cup. Before I go to bed every night I get the coffee ready for the next morning. I so look forward to the first cup that I wish it were morning already. To heck with sleep, let's just have that first cup.

I have a Stanley thermos.
It holds 2 quarts.
Each day I grind fresh beans, brew a pot and fill it up. By the end of the day, most of it is gone, sometimes all of it.
Sometimes a fresh brewed cup after dinner, too.
Coffee...it's just that awesome. Especially, that first cup.

So happy your first cup was the best. But was the 4th cup truly your last of the day? And if so, did you switch to water for the p.m. hours?

It was the second cup that was always the best as I could actually savor and take the time to enjoy it. The first cup was to start the motor running and was usually consumed in an 8:00 o'clock meeting. 'Nuff said...
Now retired, I have the first cup as I read the on-line NYT AFTER a light, leisurely breakfast. This first cup was worth all the others getting here...
