I think Daniel´s perseverance is what got his puzzle into the newspaper. Instead of giving up when his first puzzle was rejected, he took the criticism and made his puzzles even better than before. It took Daniel nine tries, but he finally got it, which improving his puzzles each time he got a rejection letter. I do not have the same passion for a game or puzzle as Daniel does, but every once in awhile I like to do jigsaw puzzles with my aunt. They are usually 1000 pieces which makes them especially hard, making it more fun for me when I am able to find a piece. Sometimes we even have a competition to see who can get the most pieces in a certain amount of time. While I do believe the crossword puzzle games are very popular in the Times Union, I do not think it will be popular in another 75 years. Did you know it was celebrating its 75th anniversary? Most kids today do not read the newspaper, and do not have parents that read the newspaper either, with the local news that we have on TV today, the paper is not needed. I feel as more generations are created, the less likely newspapers will be distributed.

In my personal opinion I think crossword puzzles are actually a bit difficult. But sometimes it can be really fun and easy. When I think of crossword puzzles I think of my nana also known as my grandmother because she always lets me do them with her. I like the ones where it actually has a topic because that's what you would think of.
Molly F (shaker)
I think crossword puzzles are kind of hard, but i think it is cool that you like to do them. What is the name of the hardest one you have ever done? How often do you do them?
Bri E (shs)
How often do you do crossword puzzles with your grandma? Is she able to do very difficult ones? My grandma is very good at crossword puzzles as well and I like to do them with her.
Zachary (W)
Is Daniel Larsen's perseverance above average for a thirteen-year-old? Absolutely, most people (let alone a teen) would give up after the second or third try. However, Daniel did not give up until he succeeded in getting his crossword published, failing eight times before getting it right. But, when it comes to crossword puzzles as a whole, I don't believe their popularity will increase too dramatically. 75 years of puzzle solving is a great accomplishment for The New York Times, however, I don't believe their puzzles will last another 75 years. I believe this to be due to the increasing volume of news organizations and puzzle games, both being detrimental to the existence of their puzzles.

Also, when it comes to puzzle/strategy games, I prefer chess over all else. It is the equivalent of war on a 64 square board.
Jana K (SHS)
I agree that the popularity will likely decrease but not just due to the increase in news organizations. I believe that the increase in other strategy games will help bring the downfall of the crossword puzzle. The excitement of colorful apps with exciting music playing in the background catches more attention than the small black and white boxes on a white screen. It seems like you enjoy more traditional games, do you ever do crosswords?
Razan.M (SHS)
I think that crosswords puzzles are great but I personally don't enjoy them. The only time I every did a crossword puzzles is if I had to for a school assignment. I think that Daniel Larsen’s perseverance in getting his first crossword puzzle published in The New York Times is amazing because he kept sending his puzzles after getting rejected 8 times and that he has a grat talent at a young age. I enjoy playing pool with my friend because I not easy to win so it always a challenge and not easy to win and that makes it fun for me.
Karrington Eagan (SHS)
Daniel Larsen's perseverance to get his first crossword puzzle published is inspiring. For him being at such a young age and determined and to have so much intelligence to do so it's inspiring that anyone can do it if they put their mind to it. I enjoy playing scrabble with my family on weekends, it makes us all use our minds and we can be competitive and still be having fun. People may ask is scrabble good for improving intelligence? Well the answer to that is yes. I have noticed it has helped a lot of my family, including me to become better with words and so forth improving our intelligence. I think crosswords will still remain popular for another 75 years because people are always going to want to be able to test their knowledge throughout life and give their brain a challenge, crosswords are a great way to do this.
ZeeshaA (SHS)
I think that Daniel Larsen's perseverance if very motivational and commendable. I like how he didn't let how far-fetched it got to his head. Personally, I despise crossword and jigsaw puzzles. I get extremely frustrated when I can't figure something out. But, I love card games like UNO. I like playing it with friends because I am very competitive. I do not believe that the younger generation will enjoy crossword puzzles.
Aidan Beach (SHS)
I think that Daniel's perseverance is admirable because even with the chances so slim, he continued to submit his crossword puzzles. What games I like to play you ask? Well... I used to play a game called Ark Survival which is extremely brutal PvP where build your own base and tame dinosaurs. You spend most of your time grinding for resources to make your base or weapons. This creates an extremely rewarding experience when you face real combat action against other players. There is a real risk losing your stuff that you worked tirelessly for. There is nothing like it and that is why I love this game.
Justin Dunham (New York)
If you put the effort into the work you are submitting. The chances of that work being used as a crossword increases. And I know what your talking about when you speak of the game Ark. Games like H1Z1, Dayz, Ark, Rust, ETC. They place you against players and if you lose then everything you had is transferred to them and you have to start over. It's part of the reason why these games are popular pvp games.
Amos Grimm (Latham ny)
because it is something he is passionate about loves and wants to share with other people so they can love it like he did. I play this game called clash royal and I really enjoy it. clash is a game on your phone you can play with your friends or by yourself. I like it so much because it is always changing and because you can challenge your freinds. I occasionally like to play a game of mini golf with my friends because its fun to just joke around. I do think people will still be solving puzzles.
Molly F (shaker)
I believe that for Daniel Larsen's this is a big achievement for him. This would be very exciting for someone that is interested in crossword puzzles. It must have been really hard for him to achieve this because of the many failures and disappointments before he accomplished getting a crossword puzzle in the New York Times. I enjoy playing monopoly every summer with my family. We only play every summer because we only play while we are at our family beach house. Monopoly is fun for me because my brother gets really competitive and it is a good bonding time for us. Will puzzles still be so popular in the future with all the technology that is going on? I think they will because kids can learn how to strategize and use their minds instead of just using the internet.
Amos Grimm (Latham ny)
Do you like monopoly for the fun of the game or because you are playing with you family? What is your strategy in Monopoly?
Molly F (shaker)
cheating
Reek Thomas (Shaker High School)
I'm into certain crossword puzzles, But if they're too hard I'll quit.
Christian G. (SHS)
My favorite types of puzzles are the ones that contain around 1,000 pieces. Why are jigsaw puzzles so helpful? They really make me concentrate and focus on the details of each piece, the shape of each piece, etc.. I always sit with my grandmother and we enjoy each others time by doing many types of jigsaw puzzles.
Amos Grimm (Latham ny)
Do you think if you weren't doing the puzzles you wouldn't enjoy them as much and would get stressed? do you think she helps you to stay focused?
Mahrouz Ahmad (Latham Ny)
Nice, Christain! !,000 piece puzzles, that's pretty baller. I can only solve puzzles with like 100 pieces tops lol I can never figure out where the pieces go and it stresses me out. Sometimes I would think I'm halfway through the puzzle then I realize some of the pieces I stuck in were upside down and were just cardboard color. Smh.
Reek Thomas (Shaker High School)
My favorite kind of puzzle is also the long confusing ones.
Jana K (SHS)
I think Daniel's perseverance is incredible. For being such a young child he was very determined to publish his crossword and kept improving with each submission. I enjoy playing games on my phone but usually only when I'm traveling. I like doing the word scramble with my grandfather when I see him. I like the word scramble because it makes you think and rearrange the letters to get words and then solve the riddle.
Nitin J. Obla (Shaker High School)
I believe that Daniel must be determined in order to take 8 rejections and still keep going. He must have liked the puzzle a lot, as someone who probably had less interest would not have submitted more after the first and second.
As for the games I play, I tend to stick to more old games, such as mancala and chess because I am generally better than most of my competition. I recently started playing PC games where I struggle to be better than the pack, but at least it gives me competition, I guess.
Antonio Cardona (SHS)
When you say you enjoy the older games you play because you are better than most people of your general competition, what makes it fun by being better than the majority of people you play against? I would find a well-fought match between someone of equal skill to me a whole lot more fun than a quick match that there was no competition in.
Logan Gardner (SHS)
My favorite game to play on my phone is monument valley because it makes you think more and use your brain to problem solve. You have to apply yourself to different scenarios to try and unlock different levels of the game. It's a very geometric game as all of the buildings are structures are different geometric shapes. It brings together geometry and problem solving and puts it together into one fun-filled game.
Julianna F (SHS)
Is it a hard to complete the game? I totally agree that brain and problem solving games are fun. It's better than sitting there playing a mindless game. Playing these games could also strengthen your ability to problem solve for other games you play in the future.
Willow R. (SHS)
I agree with brain solving games. I believe they demonstrate a challenge and are good for people that have growth mindsets. I believe challenging yourself is a good thing to do as you can expand your knowledge. What other things challenge your brain?
Ciera N (New York)
Problem solving games are very helpful in my opinion because they challenge your brain and make you have to think about what you're doing in the game. Games like those can make you smarter since they challenge you.
Chris Trudeau (SHS)
I like 300 piece puzzles because it make me think about what I am doing and it makes me take my time and the better. The games I play is FIFA, NBA, and Madden. I mostly play FIFA because I am good at the game and it has you think what your going to do next.
Kieran H (Shaker High School)
What kind of strategy do you use in FIFA? personally, I play quick passing and moving because it makes it so your opponent can't get to the ball in time. And how do you do on these puzzles in terms od strategies.
Nitin J. Obla (Shaker High School)
Chris, I believe that games like FIFA, NBA, and Madden are not as effective as playing the actual sport with friends. Do you feel the same way?
Ryan G. (Shaker High School)
I also like to play games like Fifa, Madden, and NBA, but I like them due to their competitiveness in the games. Do you also like games like these that give a competitive edge?
Iris Pu (SHS)
Daniel Larson's perseverance is remarkable. Even when he was rejected from the New York Times so many times, he took the rejections as a chance to improve and worked hard to eventually get his crossword published. I do have a similar passion for a board game called Pandemic. It is a game where there are four deadly diseases that can destroy the entire human population and you and a couple of friends or family members have to find the cure to all four diseases and eradicate it from all the cities on the map. This is a really fun game because it forces you to think about possible scenarios that could give you victory and what will tear it away from you. A game I play occasionally is called Undertale. Undertale is a PC game on Steam that takes your through a fun adventure through a kingdom of monsters. You can be merciful to the monsters that attack you or you can attack and kill them. The game is filled with comedy and a bit of drama. In short, it's just really fun!
Matt B (SHS)
I like playing Undertale as well! It's a game that requires determination and is one of the main components of the game. This reminds me of Dan Larsen's experience of getting his crossword puzzle published in the New Youk Times. In both of these scenarios, you must have a strong sense of determination to achieve your goals.
Antonio Cardona (SHS)
I also play a little bit of Undertale and the fact that you mentioned it in this article is amusing. The main theme of this article and of the game Undertale both are about determination, one with Daniel being determined to get his crossword puzzles accepted, and the game with you being determined to finish and complete it.
Gabe Amoroso (SHS)
I think it's awesome that Daniel got his crossword published in the New York Times. I mean is there any reason not to be happy for Daniel? No there isn't, he persevered through all his declined submissions until he finally got one published and that's great that he didn't give up. I think that's great because he could've easily given up after the first one he sent in didn't get published but he continued to submit puzzles hoping they would be good enough. I do have a passion for games to as well, except my passion lies in video games, if I had to choose a specific one I guess it would be For Honor, trying to predict your enemies next move and being able to counter them is so rewarding. Another thing is when I attack and they have no idea how to defend I feel great. On the opposite end though when I lose I don't get mad I look at how I lost and learn so it won't happen again. I believe crossword puzzles will remain popular for another 75 years as it helps people become smarter and use their brain. I also think parents will be more inclined to have their kids do crossword puzzles instead of play games on their phone at a young age because crossword puzzles aren't going to hurt their eyes and will help them become more intelligent.
Ryan G. (Shaker High School)
I agree with your statement that parents will be more inclined to have their ids do crosswords instead of having other games, it will help them get smrter and will help them learn.
Iris Pu (SHS)
I agree with you as well! From my own experiences, I liked to do crossword puzzles and word searches when I was a younger, while my brothers played video games. It is true that their eyesight is worse than mine, but the games they played also helped them with hand-eye coordination and fast thinking skills, while word searches and crossword puzzles let you use a little more time to think out what to put in the blanks or circle.
Chris Trudeau (SHS)
I also agree with your statement that parents will be more inclined to have their kids to do crosswords instead of having them to do other games.
Dominick C (SHS)
Back then, crosswords were new and a brand new idea that everybody though was genius. So the puzzle games will stay as a large portion used for schools and a thinking game. So will it stay alive for another 75. Yep, No doubt. It is a staple in games and puzzles.

I do enjoy the game but my most target games would be Madden or NHL, both are big thinking games with moving parts that needs the smallest detail to be successful.

once in a while I play story games, I rarely play such games only because i have had time or the're not that many games that I find enjoyable, but when i find a good game, i will get hooked.
Iris Pu (SHS)
I like playing story games occasionally as well! The visual aspect paired with the reading really brings in a new perspective in the game and sometimes also has a bit of an arcade-like feel to it.
Jason L (Shaker High Schoool)
I agree crossword puzzles require a lot of thinking and could definitely be used for school activities. I don't know if it will be alive for another 75 years considering how technology advances quickly I enjouy playing Madden and NHL too i believe they are great games that have a lot of strategy to them on how you will play the game against your opponent. It also takes a lot of skill to play these games. What kind of story games do you play?
Julianna F (SHS)
I too enjoy playing these types of games. I find them time consuming and fun when you get to create your own story. I like picking and choosing the different story options some games give you. What's your favorite story game?
Olivia B (shs)
Daniel being able to get his first crossword puzzle published in the New York Times is amazing. His perseverance is something I admire, although he was rejected many times his self-motivation made him "the youngest New York Times crossword constructer in history." Do you have a passion for a puzzle like Daniel does? I do not have a passion for a game or puzzle but I do enjoy to play board games sometimes with my friends. We like to play Monopoly or Life. The friendly competition makes it really fun to play. Will you solve crossword puzzles in the future? I think some people still might but I believe it won't be as popular as it is today. I Don't think the Times will remain popular for another 75 years. In my opinion the world is becoming more technological, so I don't think this game that you use pen and paper for will remain popular. However I think there are still going to be people creating and solving in the future, but maybe just not on pen and paper.
Claire N (SHS)
I agree that technology will soon take over the popularity of crossword puzzles. Even though they are popular now, I would guess that they are getting less popular over the years. I also think that Daniel's determination is extremely amazing. His ways of not giving up will lead him to great places in life.
Nicholas St.Leger (SHS)
For me, the greatest game to play for fun would be poker. It is not to be played to much or you may spoil the fun of it but, maybe once a week with low wagers I find much fun In. I think it is the rush you get when you win that attracts me so much towards it. This rush being accompanied by the feeling of loss makes for a very stimulating game. Usually I can enjoy it with friends but it gets very competitive. Even though we may not always play for actual coin we still get in spats over "cheap moves" or "faulty shuffling." As for if I think that crosswords will continue in their popularity well, I think they will evolve with the times. With the shift within society towards more screen driven activities I believe the crosswords on paper in 75 years will be obsolete and it will be on tablets instead. This is partially due to y belief that newspapers will be also less common as we shift towards the screen more. and more. Only time will tell but , I believe the passion for these crossword puzzles will always stay around.
Brandon Vogel (Shaker High School)
Dear Nick, although its great to see you're playing and intelligence based games. However wagering at a young age can lead to gambling addiction. However I must disagree with your thoughts on these types of puzzles staying around. I believe the human race is becoming too lazy for these tasks.
Arshiya S. (SHS)
I greatly admire Daniel's perseverance in getting his first crossword published in The New York Times. Mostly because nowadays many kids, such as 13-year-old's, are caught up in the world of technology rather than one of games and the "pen and paper" aspect of things. It's really nice to see that someone could be that devoted to something other than technology. I'm not much of a game playing person now but when I was younger (without technology in my life of course) I used to have a book full of crossword puzzles that I would do occasionally. Other than that, one activity I would always get myself involved in is bike riding. I remember, the first thing I would do when I got home from school is go outside and ride my bike for a couple of hours. What makes biking so great? It's a great way to get some fresh air during the day. Plus it's also a form of exercise. Not only is it fun and enjoyable but also healthy. Now when it comes to crosswords, I don't think they will remain popular for another 75 years. Again, like I said, this is a world of technology. I don't think pen and paper games will last much longer. Of course there will be some out there who do enjoy the old fashion games , such as Daniel, but probably not as many as there are now.
Nicholas St.Leger (SHS)
While I do agree with you that 13 year olds are caught up in the world of technology, myself I don't consider that such a bad thing. That being so because there are many additional things that one is able to do with technology more than pen and paper. Such as the ocean of information that they can access and learn. I'm just curious as to why you believe it is such a bad thing that 13 year olds are "caught up in technology?"
Olivia B (shs)
I also admire his perseverance to be rejected and keep trying is amazing. I agree with you nowadays kids are caught up in technology. I also agree that pen and paper games won't last much longer. Everything is becoming more technology based. Do you think not as many kids in the future will play sports or ride bikes because of technology?
Bianca J (SHS)
I agree that young kids today are not as interested in crosswords, because they are caught up in technology. Technology has definitely taken over the minds of young kids, but why do you think that technology is still going to have such a huge affect on young minds 75 years from now?
Antonio Cardona (SHS)
I find Daniel Larsen's perseverance to be rather admirable because of how hard he must have had worked and how he was able to be rejected 8 times and still bounce back to get his crossword puzzle in.

I have a passion for gaming on computers, in specific I enjoy the game League of Legends because you need to be very perseverant to play consistently well throughout the game and no matter what you always can have a major influence to the outcome of the match.

There are plenty of games I enjoy to casually play; such as chess or checkers; and just like anyone else, the competition makes it fun. What point is there to be playing a game you want to win and not being competitive? I could never see the fun in playing a game like so and not be competitive.
Gabe Amoroso (SHS)
Antonio who do you main as in League of Legends also I agree with the comment about games not being fun unless they're competitive what is the point of playing unless you're trying to win something.
Ryan G. (Shaker High School)
I agree that games aren't fun unless they have a more competitive aspect to them, and that there really is no point of a game unless it has that aspect.
Chris Trudeau (SHS)
I agree that games aren't fun unless they have a more competitive aspect to them
Mahad.A (Shaker High School)
Daniel is very ambitious like his father described him to be. Getting your crossword puzzle published in a prestigious newspaper like the New York Times is definitely not a walk in the park. Knowing this, Daniel continued to send his puzzles to them despite being rejected several times. If I were him I would've given up the third time. Similar to Daniel, I have a passion for the game Grand Theft Auto. I love this game so much because of how infinitely finite its possibilities and features are. While some games are solely based on racing, first person shooters or adventure/quests, Grand Theft auto is all of that in one. Other than GTA, I casually play fifa with friends because it is a game about soccer and I love to play and watch soccer.
Gabe Amoroso (SHS)
Mahad who is your favorite soccer player(probably the g.o.a.t Paulo Pogba) and how often do you play gta?
Dominick C (SHS)
Games such as GTA opens the mind to creativity and and this could also be use with board games and puzzles, as many creators open their mind to such things, it could really catch some interesting customers, with having endless possibilities, there could be different out comes.

Do you also agree?
Kieran H (Shaker High School)
when you play FIFA do you play with your favorite team? do you love using your favorite player? Who is it?
Mahrouz Ahmad (Latham Ny)
What kind of games and puzzles do I like? Well, I'll answer that for myself, because its a rhetorical question. My favorite board game is Taboo. Why do I like taboo? Because its a pretty lit game with a squeaker. I like the squeaker because it is fun to press. Also, I like Taboo because it creates a competitive environment that is fun to play in with your friends. Also I am mad nice at it and never lose, and never losing is a fun part of playing a game.
Nicholas St.Leger (SHS)
You stated that you liked Taboo because "it is a pretty lit game with a speaker." I am still confused though as to why you like it. The speaker? I mean, does the buzzing sound it makes create an emotion that you find stimulating? Or even, why do you call it lit? Is it because you can have a good time playing it around friends? All in all, what about the game makes it so appealing to you?
Mahrouz Ahmad (Latham Ny)
I think Daniel Larsen's perserverence is pretty dope b/c if not for him we wouldn't have the amazing game of crossword puzzles. I have a similar passion for a game knows as Agar.io. It is amazing and the school blocked it and that made me sad.
Emily R (Shaker)
I agree that Daniels perseverance is something to strive for. I also agree with you that crossword puzzles make you challenge yourself. Without Daniel pushing himself to be better and make a better, more challenging crossword he wouldn't have gotten to learn to pick himself back up after being rejected.
Julianna F (SHS)
Sometimes, I enjoy playing games on a game console, like Xbox. My favorite to play is the 2K games. Mostly the newest one which is 2K17. I like playing it because it gets my mind to focus on the basket and try and beat people. It's a winning game and I really like to win. Do you like to win at things? I love to win at things because it gives me a good and powerful feeling for myself.
Jason L (Shaker High Schoool)
I also play games on my console, I mainly play madden on my Xbox. and it is fun to play against friends and play competitively. I love winning in madden especially against my friends because then I have bragging rights. DO you play any other games on Xbox?
Karrington Eagan (SHS)
I do as well, I enjoy winning and gaining a feeling of being proud of myself even at the little things. What are all the 2k games? I think that you should try different games as well because you never know what might get your mind to work and focus even more, you may even find a game that you enjoy better.
Willow R. (SHS)
I have a similar passion for a game called The Divison that I play on my Xbox One. I play it about three-five times a week for an hour with my friends on Xbox Live. I like it because I get to play in an alternate virtual universe and am able to interact with people online that could live in different countries. Do you have any virtual video games that you like to play?
Logan Gardner (SHS)
I also love virtual video games! One of my personal favorites is The Last of Us. The audio and visual aspects paired together make for both a fantastic game and a great experience.
Brandon Vogel (Shaker High School)
I personally do not care for crossword puzzles, however, it is good to see someone young getting recognition for their accomplishment. I myself enjoy outdoors games and activities, I feel they can help one reconnect and relax. However, it is great to exercise your mind and grow. One cannot grow as a person without growing the mind.
Nicholas St.Leger (SHS)
Your last statement "One cannot grow as a person without growing the mind," I found confusing. Do you mean that the evolution of a person must also be accompanied by the expansion of their intellectual mind, perhaps their common sense, or even their problem solving abilities?
Jason L (Shaker High Schoool)
I agree I don't care for crossword puzzles myself but I agree that it is good to do things they want to achieve like Daniel and his crossword puzzles. What kind of outdoor activities do you do?
Claire N (SHS)
I do not care for crossword puzzles as well, but I see other people's intrest. They are very satisfying to complete but I get bored easily. But people with opposite personalities like you mentioned, it can calm and relax them.
Ryan G. (Shaker High School)
I like doing regular puzzles, usually around 1,000 pieces. I like doing them with my family, we sort of have a competition to see who can find the most parts to the puzzle. I like to play also board games like "Trouble" and "Sorry!" with my family. We have a game night every once in a while.

My favorite to play though is sports games online like Madden and NBA. I find these types of games very fun and I'm good at playing them. They also fill my need to have competition in a game.

Do you like to play sports games?
Jason L (Shaker High Schoool)
I used to do puzzles with my family all the time and we worked on puzzles for hours. We have a tradition of playing a lot of board games on New Years ending with Monopoly. I also play Madden it's very fun and you can compete with your friends. Do you play any sports?
Chris Trudeau (SHS)
What is your favorite Football team and NBA team Ryan?
Kieran H (Shaker High School)
Do you play any other sports games? personally, I like playing FIFA and Madden. What teams do you like to use in these games and do you play these sports in real life?
Bri E (shs)
I think it's great that Daniel got his crossword puzzle published in the New York Times because it shows that he is able to accomplish something that not many other kids his age do. Many kids think that puzzles like this are just for older people but is that really the case? I think that puzzles or games can be for any age because they promote learning and thinking outside of the box. I personally like to play card games every once in a while because my grandma always likes to play. It is fun to play new games with her since she knows way more than I do. I think that the crossword puzzles won't be as popular in 75 years as they are now because everyone is switching to electronics. The people who play paper crosswords will definitely decrease but maybe people will start to play crosswords online.
Emily R (Shaker)
I agree that puzzles are for any age and that games are good learning experiences. Most of all I agree that yes people are switching to electronics and there are ways that you can do the crossword puzzle or any other puzzles online without wasting paper but I don't believe more people will start doing the puzzles just because they are online
Arshiya S. (SHS)
I agree with the fact that not that many kids Daniels's age are as committed to crossword puzzles as he is. You don't see many kids just playing puzzles and board games for fun. Like you said, their main source of entertainment is technology. Do you think you'll be engaged in the world of crosswords when you're older?
Claire N (SHS)
I agree that it is very rare for a kid Daniel's age to earn something like this early in his life. And I support the idea that crossword puzzle usage will decrease and possibly become online.
Jason L (Shaker High Schoool)
I think Daniel Larsen's perseverance with the crossword puzzles is very inspiring to set a record for what you love to do is very inspiring. It also shows that he is committed to these crossword puzzles and is very good at what he does.

I have a passion for the game of football. I love football so much i love all the hard work you have to put into it, I love all the practices and being with your teammates, and I love the contact and that feeling of being on the field helping your team contribute and like Daniel with crossword puzzles you strive to be the best. Why is football such a popular sport? Because it teaches you many life lessons and many people love to hit other people and everything about the game is fun and is the most popular sport in the U.S.

I think crossword puzzles will be around in seventy-five years, but won't be as popular. I say that many of the older or middle aged people will still do it, but many of the younger generation won't do it as much and do other things that entertain them.
Sean C (SHS)
Jason, I could not agree more.

Football is an excellent reference to physical games that tens of millions of people play daily, and it provides the great framework as to what a game is. It, at its most basic, needs to provide entertainment. However, an important aspect is strategizing, and it is in football where you can find it prominently. It is in football where people need to take a hit, sacrifice themselves, and devise a strategy to break through the rival team's line. In that way, it becomes much more than just ramming into each other for a ball. Are there any other games that you play that provides such strategy and teamwork?
Brady D (SHS)
I don't think that people will be doing crossword puzzles in the future, basically at all. I don't even know if newspapers will be as big in the future because everything is electronic now. You can get crossword puzzles online or download an app to do them. Do you ever download puzzle apps?
Julianna F (SHS)
I too feel that crossword puzzles in newspapers will start to become less popular. With more and better technology, people do most their reading and gaming on a device. Most people download a puzzle app and play more efficiently on there. Do you have any puzzle apps on your phone?
Emily R (Shaker)
I think Daniels perseverance is admirable and inspiring for being only 13. He didn't let being turned down 8 times stop him, and he kept going and even wanted something for his birthday so he could become better at what he wanted to do.

I don't really like to play games or puzzles, but I do enjoy playing sports like soccer and basketball with my friends. I feel like I like playing sports more than playing board games because they keep me entertained and happier because I'm with new people rather than playing by myself.

Why don't people always like what they do and give up on it so quickly? It might just not be what the person likes it's no big deal if you give up if you did try it.
Karrington Eagan (SHS)
I agree that Daniels perseverance is admirable and inspiring for being 13 years old. I also prefer playing sports over doing puzzles, because of being alone as well, but would you ever try to play a board game with your friends?
Claire N (SHS)
I believe that Daniel Larson's perseverance and talent helped him accomplish his goals. But without his ability to bounce back after being rejected multiple times got him to where he is today. Perseverance is underestimated as a quality for success.
My favorite game or sport is definitely gymnastics. I love the thrill of getting a new skill or making a new skill. The happiness I feel after a good meet is what I'm sure people feel when completing a crossword puzzle.
I think crossword puzzles will not go out of style. The love for the game will be passed down through families and friends.
Iris Pu (SHS)
I agree with you as well. Crossword puzzles are fun to complete and they help you think more. They are very relaxing to do when you are stressed. Does anyone else play games when you feel stressed?
Brady D (SHS)
I think it's great that Daniel got a crossword puzzle published in The New York Times. I think that many young people ask, what can games and puzzles do for you besides bore you? They can do a lot for you. Daniel is most likely a very smart person and is only going to get smarter by doing crossword puzzles. I play games very often with my cousins. We even have a cousin game night every month. We play so many games that there's too many to count and I can't remember the name of all of them. Some of the games are strategy games and some of them are just for fun. All of these games make me think and i have a lot of fun playing them. It's something fun to do with my cousins.
Ethan O (SHS)
I agree that he must be pretty smart. My family also tries to do a family game night with each other, It helps socialize more with each other. It has other benefits too. Some notably being strategy and getting out brains active and thinking. I enjoy it as much as it is hard to get off of our computers its worth it in the long run.
Arshiya S. (SHS)
Many people do think that puzzles can be a bore. That's probably because they simply just haven't found the right one for them. I totally agree that puzzles and games can do wonders for your mind. Not only that, but they can be very enjoyable, if you know where to look. I think that having a game night occasionally can be very helpful and a great way to have a good time. Do you only stick to board games and puzzles or have you played with computer games too?
Olivia B (shs)
I agree that many young people think crossword puzzles are boring. Also I agree that Daniel is very smart and is getting smarter by doing the puzzles. It's amazing that you have a game night sometimes and play games with our cousins.Do some of the games you play on game night use technology?
Ethan O (SHS)
I admire Daniel for his perseverance when someone has the motivation to go out and keep trying to achieve something it shows a great level of commitment. Many people have commitments to their own things but those usually involve a device such as a phone. Seeing that Daniel is into crosswords and made the New York Times it's truly amazing.

I have a passion for building computers both for myself and for others. It isn't as traditional as say a crossword but I enjoy the feeling of helping others while doing something I love.

I have a game called 'Settlers of Catan' that I enjoy to play on a calm Saturdays. It takes a few hours to play but in that time you can socialize with everyone and It gets people off of their phones. It is a cool game and a deep passion of mine. So I ask "Why do people stay on their phones when they can socialize with others?" Its because they don't know what else there is to do.
Julianna F (SHS)
I agree that Daniel has motivation. I know I wouldn't be able to have that much motivation. He must feel extremely confident in what he did. Daniel also must feel very proud and powerful. And I agree with you when you say people need to socialize more. We need to take time off our phone and maybe game more! Doing a puzzle with others could help you socialize. Even playing online games with others is good too.
Arshiya S. (SHS)
Daniel's perseverance really does show a great deal of commitment you don't really see nowadays. I think it's great that you have a passion for building computers. I would never find myself doing that, but knowing someone who is involved in an activity like this is truly astonishing. I agree with the fact that kids spend most of their time on phones rather than socializing simply because they don't know how. What else would you recommend to people who are constantly on their phones?
Sean C (SHS)

How did you come about your passion for building computers?
Sean C (SHS)
Daniel Larsen's perseverance is, ultimately, rather admirable, and a quality few people can say that they have. Sending seven entire crossword puzzles, hardly worked on and thought out, to simply be denied each time, but continuing to work... It is something really quite commendable.
One must ask, however, what sort of question that second one is. What child doesn't hold a passion for a game of some variety? The importance comes in why. Some people enjoy blackjack for the simple thrill. Some enjoy strategy games to hone their skills and best opponents. Some like shooters for the adrenaline rush. Most people, myself included, casually enjoy games of all sorts. For me, I enjoy strategic games. I thoroughly enjoy the thrill and the threat, and how to defeat one's enemies through words and not weapons. It's all the better when you play with your friends.
Ethan O (SHS)
I agree that Daniel has perseverance, with that amount I believe that he could set his mind to anything and accomplish it. He must feel the satisfaction after all this time to have gotten his puzzle into the prestigious New York Times. And as Sean said everybody has a passion. Mind personally is Shooter games I enjoy the rush and the feel of accomplishment at the end of every round. What is your Favorite type of game to play in your free time?
Justin Dunham (New York)
Personally, this article does not come at a surprise to me. There is no restriction in making a crossword puzzle based on age. Someone who is young is just an able to make a crossword as someone who is an "old folk". This is no boundary, people no matter what age they are can work in a field like this. I think calling it a "perseverance" is a bit of an exaggeration.

People get hooked on games and puzzles. And the reason is, they are games and or puzzles. They are fun, and people enjoy fun. Markets like video games have hooked tons of consumers. even myself, and are growing in their wealth. What's the reason? People enjoy having fun. That's something that most people can agree on, fun is fun.

The real factor is an activity that makes it fun is friends. Personally, as someone who plays video games for long periods of time, playing with friends multiplies the enjoyment. Working towards a common goal in a virtual world with friends makes it much more enjoying, but singleplayer games and puzzles are still valid.

I think that while we have industries like gaming which are providing games such as GTA 5 or Counter Strike Global Offensive, with millions of people enjoying the games and the fact that they are going to get better. People are not going to be inclined to do crosswords for much longer. However, people enjoy writing, reading, and advanced thinking in their games. Crosswords will be replaced with a more advanced type of puzzle.
Dominick C (SHS)
I also do enjoy video games and i play almost anything i can get my hand on. My big preference of genre is games such as sports like Madden and Nhl, those games involve thinking such as what play to run, who to play to, where the run, when to commit to a certain play type, a lot moving parts,

Do you to also enjoy games with moving parts such as Madden?
Justin Dunham (New York)
*Replying to myself to have additional space for a comment."

Don't you think that the the generation before us was potentially ridiculed by the generation before that for inventions like the radio or television? New technology has appeared in each generation adding a large amount of new activities that people can enjoy. We've also improved on the tech and games we had in the past. Compare the cars of today and the car designs created by Karl Benz. I would also assume that the next generation is going to have a new tech, probably advancements in the Virtual Reality field which is already beginning to be ridiculed as it takes people into a world away from their's. An escape. Each generation will absorb into the current tech and will stay with what they have.

Every once in a while I like to play the game grand theft auto. you complete missions and you can drive in a car. my favorite part of the game is driving in the car because you can run over people and they sometimes leave money that they had. It's a great game I 10/10 recommend. Do you like car driving games?
Julianna F (SHS)
grand theft auto is my favorite game to play also. i feel so in control when I do missions or drive my car and stuff. I like the graphics and details to it a lot. They're very real looking. The sound effects are also pretty fuuny.
Willow R. (SHS)
I play GTA on my Xbox 360 sometimes. I love it because it's basically a free roam world where you are able to drive a car and it's also a shooter game which is my favorite type of video game. I also enjoy free roam games because it gives more of a real-life experience and allows you to complete more objectives then you would be able to complete in a non-free roam game
Ethan O (SHS)
I just recently bought GTA and I have suck many hours into the game. I agree that driving is one of the best aspects of the game. Another thing is the open world, it gives you the opportunity to do what you want. I personally enjoy doing Missions and Jobs. Plus being able to buy things gives you a sense of accomplishment.
Kieran H (Shaker High School)
The games I like the most are games based on soccer. Soccer is my favorite sport and I love to be able to play with my favorite players in real life, in a video game. A game I enjoy casually with my friends is Battlefield, I am just able to chill and play with them and whoever does the best gets bragging rights until the next game. Even though it's the 75th anniversary of the of the crossword puzzle, I don't think it will last another 75 years. everything seems to be electronic now and people use news channels for news, not newspapers and people won't be able to do crossword puzzles unless The Times Union makes drastic changes in the way it is distributed. They could make an app and offer prizes to the people who get all the words in the puzzle the fastest.
Mahad.A (Shaker High School)
I agree with your thought on newspaper puzzles not lasting another 75 years but I don't think puzzles themselves will be gone. Like you said the new york times will need to make changes and I think one of those changes might be lowering production of physical newspapers and increase dependence on publising online puzzles. This will not only keep the tradition going but It will also be up to modern times.
Mahad.A (Shaker High School)
Also when you play fifa, Do you also play with teams other than your favorites?? who?
FREDO (bed)
i like games that involve thinking, like a mystery game and stragic games
Brady D (SHS)
I also like strategy games. Have you ever played clue? It's a really good game that involves a lot of thinking.
Reek Thomas (Shaker High School)
The kind of games I like are games where you can't figure them out very easy. Like a 300 word puzzle. They get my mind going and I don't wanna stop until I finish them
Reek Thomas (Shaker High School)
What is your favorite kind of game/puzzle ?
Julianna F (SHS)
My favorite games are Xbox games such as 2K. I like the graphics, it feels like I'm really playing basketball somewhere.
