How Prepared Are You For College? How Well Do You Think You’ll Do?

When I get asked am I college ready, I think to myself I’m somewhat ready. The phrase “College ready” has many different parts, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The process starts with applying to colleges having the grades to get into college, and having the other needs for college. If I were to apply to a college right now I might get accepted not counting my SAT score because I haven’t took that yet. I have the grades that’s just the minimum. That to me is the physical part. Now to go into the deeper meaning am I mentally and emotionally ready? Not yet, the late night studies, working and going to school, pass or fail exams? Now that’s a different type of story. I’m not ready for the late night studies, and I’m most definitely not ready for the past and fail test. I’m not even good at regular exams and that’s high school, so I can only imagine how my college exams about to be. If I fail a class my freshman year emotionally I would be a wreck. On top of that I won’t be close to home because I plan on going to college. So I won’t have that place to go to where I would if I was at home. But that’s just something I would have to get us to. I think after my first little semester I would get the hang of college by then and I would know what to expect. Furthermore, I do believe I’m going to be okay and surpass with flying colors. So to the question am I college ready? Physical I am ready mentally and emotional I’m getting ready when the time comes I’ll be on my P’s and Q’s

My experiences with academic preparation for college have been taking two Advanced Placement classes that are basically college classes you can take in high school.
I think that the placement of so many college students in remedial math courses is an indicator of high school not being able to fully prepare. I think this because if those students were fully prepared and ready for college, that high of an amount of students would not need to take these remedial classes.
I have been told that you will have to take Algebra and Calculus in college.
I think the factors that contribute to success in college are being equipped with a good work ethic, asking questions to clarify things you don’t know, and making sure you know the material.
I think I will be semi prepared for college by the time I graduate because I have taken Advanced Placement classes, and my mom is helping with things I need to know for when I do go to college.

After I read the article “Trying to Solve a Bigger Math Problem” by Emily Hanford I am worried for the amount of students who have problems with Math and English. I think that is very important the schools and parents work together analyzing more carefully what kind of knowledge the students need to before to start their live in the College.
Also I think that many students who want to go to College that have problems with both courses are students that have few years in the country, and they would should to receive additional classes in their high schools.
Further I think that parents should be involve seriously in the education of their kids, pushing to read, to analyze, to spend time talking about their goals. Many students who have been admitted to assist to the College have to take remedial courses because some of them have had a poor quality of education or simply they didn’t have interest in their classes.
On the other hand, there are many immigrants adults that want to study in the college and here I am include and we need remedial classes in English or Math. Clip program is a good assistance and I have to improve my English and practice more for avoid have problems my live in the College

My name is Mayra Ramos, I am studying in York College CLIP program for 5 months approximately. Every day for me is a challenge because I want to learn English very fast. But is not easy. I am a single mother. I feel very worry about my future in the college because I need a lot of improvement in my language skills. When I come to study is like I come to my zone of confort because I am building my dream. I want to study a career to work with kids and very single day I am doing my best version of myself. My personal opinion is we need a teacher or professional that will help us our motivations, fervor and perseverance. Some days me and few classmate feel break down. We need to be more strong mentally. Because I don’t want to leave this program. Is necessary more support to continue studying. While this is happening I am here doing my student work. I am so grateful with staff and teachers are excellent and very professionals. About mathematics I think is necessary according the career the student will choose. But it is a requirement to go to college we have to do. For me is not that a problem because I love that. I enjoy resolving mathematics. +

Education is the most important thing for people’s future in the USA. It is a country where we work with our knowledge is better than working with our physical strength. Sometimes when we want to go to college we have problems. One of these problems is math; numbers for some student are easy but for the others are very difficult. According to many surveys almost all of students in the USA are failing in math. I think that many of these students are afraid when teachers tell them something about math; it is as that many students are preprogrammed to feel rejection about it. Almost of time math is very difficult, it needs a lot of practice. This is a big problem because Cuny Colleges require an average score in math, for we can start at college and we take class. I’m disagreeing with it. It is very frustrating when you want to study and for some class, as math, College says “Stop”, for example if some students want to study nursing, math is no so necessary. I think that math should be a requirement for some careers like engineer or architect. This system should change because many students are leaving their education and their dreams
Andrea 4D (YC-CLIP)
Our educational system has already decided for us what subjects should be taught in every step of our education, but as happen with everything at some point, people start to show interest in specific things, and walk to the path they think they are ready for. Since we were kids, we have had to deal with subjects we do not like, whether we were good at numbers but a disaster at writing essays, or the other way around. Through at our education we have had to face things that are not that enjoyable, so when a high school graduated steps up and plans to go to college, they probably think they are going to get rid of the required subjects, to finally focus on the target major. Math taught in high school is not even comparable to the math that is required on national tests taken into account by most universities, like the SAT and the ACT. The knowledge considered in these exams is based on the specific application of mathematical formulas that need previous practice and memorization. This is why many students have to take a previous preparation for them; otherwise, they should be able to take the exams just with the regular high school preparation. What I think is that specific high math knowledge should only be required in those majors where math is essential (that are not that little). Other careers should focus in areas like logical reasoning, which is highly related with counting and mathematics skills, and yet, does not require a hyper-high standard previous education.

I read an article By Emily Hanford “How Prepared Are You for College”. This is very important subject for my major is physical therapist. I think it can be great step for future .Education is a base fundamental of the nation or one people individual. I have had academic experience to prepare a college .I need to motivate myself to pass the cuny skill test. I need to study, read prepare about the test .I need to know myself very well .I need to know my strength and my weakness .Without that you cannot do anything .I think it is not true a problem . People are supposed to know a method to do a moth .It doesn’t matter if you know or don’t but one reason you need to follow a rules math yourself or group to know more about math .It is nothing hard as the life. You need to work very hard to become great.

Following the topic and according to the pre-college preparation I have experienced, even when it has helped me out with some questions I used to have before taking it, it also has left and created harder questions to get a response. As soon I started my way as a college student, I realized that I was not ready to get to the level I should be getting into de major I’ve chosen, and it made me be sure that the amount of knowledge I had received during my high school period was not enough at all .
As the most of the students I did not feel I could make it without receiving a remedial math class, and after I did I still felt like I couldn’t make it what also makes a fact that schools and the study methods we have been applying are not being the ones that are going to make us be prepared to go to college. As a college student I would give you as an advice to don’t rely in the knowledge you already have but try to go deeper and find the answers of the questions you still have, and be completely sure that you are ready to get into college world.
If you feel you need time to do it, the best thing you can do is take the necessary time to be one hundred percent sure that once you get in you can handle it, and you will not feel pressed or stressed because your math teacher is speaking in other language, you were supposed to know and recognized but you did not
Dicki 4D (YC CLIP)
If i 'm a college student, I have advice for high school students. Planning to go to college is more concentration on ELA and Math regents to achieve the 80 above because these scores help to gain entry in the college and he or she doesn’t have to take remedial classes. In addition if you achieved higher score on SAT, it helps to get in a good college and it’s another way to skip remedial classes. If I’m a high school student, I prepared for college by the time I graduate. I will take more AP classes and College Now courses because these programs which offer college level curricular and examination to high school students. It grants placement and course credit to student who obtains high scores on the examination and doesn’t cost the money for courses. Also it prepares the students in Math, reading and writing skills to develop.

How prepared are you for College? How well do you think you’ll do?
The best way I would prepare for college requires first of all, academic skills. Obviously it requires lot of speaking, writing, practice good study habits; by good study habits I can get my goal and interest. I assume that there are so much to consider when it comes to know. How prepared someone is for college? Where do you go? What do you going to study? How do you apply? How do you pay for it ?
As a foreign student of languages barriers, I think I would have to study every day hard and go over my goal. I need a quiet place. Focus about speaking and writing skills, I need to think about logically and analytically, I need a lot of research.

Did you really propose yourself to do better when you were in high school? The biggest problem that has been occurring is that students have not been focusing on their studies while they are in high school. Students have limited their knowledge. They have thought that they cannot learn something difficult. This is what has been happening with lots of students when they try to go to college. They fail in a math test and they are sending to take remedial classes. My advice for those students that think about to go to college after they graduate from high school is that, they must dedicate more of their time working on their weaknesses.
Lizeth 4D (YC CLIP 4D)
I think we should be preparing to the university since high school but we are not. Especially the public school does not emphasize and motivate the math classes to their students maybe I am wrong, but the percentage says the opposite. I have experience and i know that is too difficult when you start in college and you have a lot of gaps, especially in math and you will be confused and you will not understand anything. Lots of people give up or they just do not want to study. Because In this time youth are lazy, they do not have aspirations and dreams and when they see that college is difficult and more if they do not want to study and they do not know math, all this problems are making the percentage critical because the students are not prepared to be in college. They need help like pre-college where they can learn the real math and how manage it in college and maybe this can change the percentage and many people can study without problems with math.
Ifeoma 4D (YC)
I think student should be prepared from high school before entering college. If college is the gateway to the real world, then high school is the long highway that precedes it. They should design courses that truly prepare students for college and ensure that they can enter their first year of higher education without needs for remedial courses. With mathematics you have to use your brain, unlike reading you have to memorize what you read.
Lawrence 4D (YC)
I think it will be very nice for a study math in college. it will help them improved their statistical system and reviews their abilities for forward study in the future. It’s very important that in college, you will have basic knowledge of math. In some colleges, it seems that you must take a course accuplacer, before you will be admit. It will be very important to have knowledge and listen before take such course in college.

Students need to prepare for college to have excellent grades. In college, math is the biggest struggle because we know that requires a lot of practice and dedication. Math requires constantly repetition until we get all the process. Today, kids do not understand well this class clearly. Many teachers think that some kids are smart and they can get math easily than others. However, they do not pay attention to the students who cannot take well math. This is not helping to many parents because their children need to understand math for everything in their lives. Math is a hard class to understand, but everybody can understand and do all the excursive that math. We can get a successful grade.
Cristhian 4D (YC CLIP)
This topic makes references to the entire student, who will have the struggle to get into college. I am a college student, and for me it was, not for the math was for the language that I could not understand what the question asked for. But anyway I tried to do it well, bit fail and I took a remedial class, after this I past the exam with a highest grade, because the only thing that we should focus in the problems and be very carefully by the moment you will taking the test. However, sometime the reason that some students have to enroll to the remedial class is also because when they are attending class, the do not give the full concentration that’s why some of them fails. I think this is the biggest problem for all of us, when I was in high school sometime I was drop or absented of my math class. Although for all of us math class always going to be a struggle and this struggle was difficult to broke it, but with patience and effort we can cross it.

To start in college you need to be ready in all areas. Many people have had problems with their test score. I’m one of those; I’ve had experiences with my math score. But, I did not give up and I’m studying to be ready and prepared for my next test. Math is an area very strong and you need to give your best. The good side of this is math ever is the same logical, the same result. Just that you need is to be careful and sure of yourself. If your problem is another area, must focus in that without neglecting others.

How Prepared Are You for College

In my opinion, I think school should prepare the kids from the beginning and make them love and deal with math .Because when the kids grow up with no math preparation they will struggle all the school years. For example, I hate math because of the way how they taught us was hard and kind of boring. Now, I find myself struggling again because I have to prepare for college that will be a big challenge for me. And math classes are the best choice I can do to prepare myself for college.
Marlon 4D (YC CLIP)
The preparation for college is good in many ways because people can learn many skills before they go to college. I think the problem why many students do not have many qualities in math is not problem of high school because they prepare very well the students but the students sometimes are not able to learn many things. When I will go to college, I want to learn math in many ways because I need it. The most important thing that I need to learn very well is algebra because is the hardest to learn. When I was in high school, I was prepared very well for college, the problem was that I was not able to learn many things, so that was my problem and not of high school.
Dahiana 4D (YC CLIP)
Well, well, my first advice is not to be scare of math. Frequently, people are afraid because math is like a horrific story telling from generation to generation. Sometimes, we believe only “smart” person can be good in math. Is that true? Of course not! Ask yourself why you think like that; probably somebody had told you that math is difficult and scary like a monster. But now you can realize math requires preparation, planification and of course time and efforts. All this it is in your hand. Is your decision and totally depend on you, not you IQ. In the other hand math skills become a little tricky, because you need to build a good foundation in order to arise strong mathematics skills. Then be patient, keep working hard and you will see your confidents and your math skills growing at the same time.

I think I’m on a good way to start because I have make so many effort to improve myself by doing my research and my homework to getting the level I need for my college .Even the assignment is not so easy every day I’m working on my understanding to see my progress .I’m pretty sure I’m on the track .day after day become harder. The challenge is tie but I will have to do it.Success is hard working every subject are important ,we have to learn and understanding.
Gleydis 4D (YC CLIP)
I think that my experience in academic preparation for college has been the best because I’ve been learning a lot of subjects that I didn’t learn in high school. I think that my level as a college student has been improved because I’ve been preparing to enter to college and it has been growing up. Also I think that to get success in academic college you need to do all the assigned subjects from teachers. I think academic preparation for college is the best way to prepare student to enter college to college because college subjects are very different than high school subjects. Especially math subjects because college teachers use other terms in math subjects than high school teachers do not. I think high school teachers need to use some college teachers terms, so when high school students get into college they may have a little knowledge.

How Prepared Are You for College
Prepare to get to college needs a transition. Academic preparation for college is how the transition to college level works. Math is an important factor for any students who are ready to go to college, because this statement said:” It found that 40 percent of strongly prepared student at public two years college and 13 percent at four years institutions had taken remedial math”. I think this idea is true because the fact of so many college students in remedial math courses is an indicator of high school not being able to prepare them for college.

Math is one of my struggles. I had to take class of math because I could not pass the accuplacer math test. I took math class six years ago when I was in high school. I can not remember all this information. I believe that it is one of the problems. Many students do not start college after they finish their high school. Another thing, colleges should allow students whose majors do not have math as base (Nurse, Dentist etc.) start the colleges with the minimum average in math. I think that colleges should have more programs to help students during their career without taking remedial class.

As a 15 year old in high school. It is hard to think about college. especially when your in piles and piles of homework everyday. College is coming soon and I still don't know what I want to be yet. I try clubs and go out and beyond and look at classes so I can see what I am into and branch out to look at colleges once I found what I'm interested in. As a 15 year old in high school. it is hard to think about college.
Sara R (Midd south)
I think the best way to prepare for college is knowing where you stand and your limits. You should know which schools are reach schools and which ones are your safe schools so you do not get your hopes up too much. You should limit the amount of reach schools to 2 or three because they are called REACH schools for a reason.
Dustin D (Arizona)
I do not agree. I think everyone should be prepared for college once they get out of high school for many reasons. To be properly prepared for college i think you need to have a high school education, a reliable source of income to pay for student loans, and you need to be mentally prepared and matured to move on in that time of your life at a 8-year university.
Bobby P (NJ)
As a 14 year old freshman in high school, I haven't really visited many colleges or even thought of it for more than five minutes but after reading this article and my parents nagging me to get great grades for college, I have realized that college is right around the corner. I get very good grades and play baseball and basketball so I am aware of the many opportunities that college provides but I have little to no experiences with academic preparation. I believe that in order to succeed in college and life itself, you have to do it on your own with a little help. Teachers teach but it's up to the student to study and comprehend what he/she is learning. It's up to them if they want to get the good grade on the test quiz. Or excel in many fields. The student should be able to prepare themselves for college. Many of my cousins that are either in college or are out have succeeded greatly. Two of my female cousins have mastered in teaching and other subjects. They always said that they had to study and they had to be willing to miss things such as parties, hang outs and many things to succeed. They had to be willing to use their free time to their advantage and study. Since I'm only a freshman, I believe that if I continue what I'm doing, I'll hopefully succeed.
Phill (New Jersey)
As a 17 year old high school student nearing the climax of my college and career preparation, I am faced with many questions and decisions on what I must do to ensure a prosperous future. My public high school is very centered on pushing students to work and find what colleges are right for them. To the board of education and the community this push and constant encouragement is a key, beneficial factor in the students' future. To me, its just a bit overwhelming. Of course it is very understandable. If I continue to push and focus on my education than I can be correctly prepared for college. Hearing that this may not be the case is frightening. All education, whether its 4th grade, 12th , or your senior year in college, is meant to prepare the student for the next step. Both the high school and the student have work to make sure he/she is prepared for this next step.

I think one of the most important ways to prepare for college is doing your own work in high school and doing your homework that is assigned. Also, starting at like 15-years-old i would think you need to start thinking about what you are gonna do with your life. Like if you want to go to a two-year college or a big university all depends on what you want to do. If you want to succeed in college you need to work as hard as Albert Einstein. But getting used to doing your stuff on your own is the best way to prepare for college.
Hassan (Saudi Arabia)
Certainly, there are enormous number of stumbling blocks we encounter during our educational journey. It is easy to increasingly ignore the fact that it is not about difficult the course is, indeed, how much we feel by studying them. No doubt that the enthusiasm, passion and emotional stability in our life are necessary and all-important to overcome and digest even the most toughest courses. That is to say, the widespread notions and rumors that shadowed over high schools about math and alike course are the main culprits and the main cause that led most of students to abandon studying them regularly and vigorously. My experience demonstrates how ridiculous to stick and adhere to those educational prejudices. I once failed to grasped the math in high school and I couldn't understand them easily. In fact, I was totally taken it seriously and audaciously; I made painstakingly huge and recognizable effort trying to chew them conceptually but ended up miserable and depressed with a shameful score. Aftermath, my performance in Calculus I&II during my study in undergraduate school was surprisingly in stark contrast. I totally realized that that eagerness and getting rid of trivial and redundant notions have aided and catalyzed my brain significantly in perceiving the mathematical problem in a very clever way. To put it briefly, I do believe that the proper teaching is essential to enlighten and cultivate us, however, the rest is upon us to juggling them cohesively and excessively.
Lee Del (RI)
Two of the many reasons for remedial math classes in college are more students being accepted to college with less academic skills than ever before and what actually constitutes a high school algebra course. In one high school, there can be several levels of Algebra II. The lowest class labeled Algebra II can be similar to an Algebra I class and the highest labeled Honors can be consistent with skills needed in college, in addition to several more levels in between. For all levels, Algebra II is listed on the transcript and a student from the low level Algebra will be in for quite a surprise when taking a college math course and is completely lost. The colleges respond by offering remedial classes, but they are not included(nor should they be)in the credits needed for graduation. It becomes a difficult journey.
Mary Rojas (Boston)
I think one of the most important, if not the most important thing one can do to prepare for the adventures of college is to make metal health a priority.

Some items:

0. Formulate a weekly schedule and turn off devices when working
1. Never miss class
2. Do all assignments "yourself". For math classes do the hw problems youself.
3. Take class notes and review them afterward.
4. Start prepping for an exam one week before

Students are preparing by attending great public schools. Math is their biggest struggle because as we know it requires a lot of not very fun practice. It requires the drudgery of repitition until you get it. It is slow and methodical for most people. Kids do not understand this today. They think some are just smart and get math. It is not helped by parents who say things like, "I wasn't good at math either." Math is hard work but nearly everyone can master it when they decide it is important for them to do it. Students need a growth mindset that says with hard work I can learn anything.
pat (chi)
Sorry for being a bit long winded here, but I think this is an important point. And it has implications for learning in college.

Learning what subject is fun for a kid (including college kids!)? Is writing a paper less drudgery than doing math problems?

I disagree that math is the drudgery of repetition until you get it. Elementary math might be learning a procedure (i.e. dividing fractions and long division) and then applying it to some problems-not all that many. If they cannot do the problems correctly, they are either making simple numerical mistakes (for example, multiplication) or don't know the procedure. Those issues are not fixed by giving more problems.

In higher math (algebra, trig, calc, etc.) you have to understand what you are doing (called theory) before you do any problems. You will not learn theory just by repetition. This is the difference between HS and college. In college they (I) give problems on exams that have not been done before. Since the problem is new there is no repetition. You have to understand the theory and apply it. Too many college kids have a hard time with this (the learned by repetition and not the theory?).
If instruction is being done by countless repetition, something is wrong and no wonder kids are turned off.

I'm a 30 year old pursing a STEM Bachelor's degree. Currently taking differential equations. Started with college algebra the summer of 2015 to "brush up" as the article mentions. I tutor people at the local community college in everything from remedial math to Calculus III, and I believe when it comes to math there is one defining factor that can better predict successful completion of a course than any other factor. That is, how the person thinks about learning.

If the student believes that their abilities are fixed, or per-determined, many fail at the first onset of hardship. If the student believes in a work-based aptitude where one's abilities are not predetermined, but cultivated; then they are more likely to push through when the material gets tough. My advice for those afraid of their advanced math courses. Do the work early, learn the basics, rules and fundamentals. Also, a little secret to getting high A's through all of calculus. Know and understand the theorems. If you do that, rather than rely on rote memory, you'll be set.
Tanner (Arizona)
The way I would prepare for college is by getting my supplies at the store including pencils, a 12-inch ruler, some college- ruled paper, binders , and other supplies I would need. I think I would have a hard time in college because I am a slower learner then other people. I would have to study every day and go over everything I went over in class and make sure I know the homework or the lesson I am studying.
Anne Slater (Ardmore, PA)
Where you get your supplies is immaterial, but recognizing that you are a slow learner is a very important piece of information. Your approach will stand you in good stead. Slow and steady wins the race.
Apparently functional (CA)
You've got a good plan--study every day, and review the things you did in class--so the speed at which you get things done isn't so important.
JGolden (Arizona)
College is very scary looking. In our real-world education system, every student is tested on the same thing, regardless o what they know. There are eight talents or ways of learning, including musical, nature, and many others. So if our education system is testing very brilliant children in a field they are not strong in, you are taking the child and pulling out their weaknesses without focusing on their strengths. So college may not be something kids want to pursue because of our education system. College is very scary looking thanks to our education system.
Lauren H (usa)
Well so far I have been preparing by getting good grades and by playing club soccer. I am not a college student, however I know from learning from others experiences is that you need to be independent, hard working and very patient. I believe that some high schools do not fully prepare us because there "hard" classes are not hard at all, yet some private high schools prepare you for that. I have yet to be told what math classes I would need to take in college. by the time I am a senior I feel like I would be fully prepared for college, only because I am kind of prepared now. Well in conclusion I believe that I am preparing by getting good grades and playing club soccer.
Apparently functional (CA)
Soccer is not an academic skill, although if you play it purely for fun it'll help you manage stress in college.
College is about learning to think, to examine evidence and come to logical conclusions, to understand other points of view even if you don't agree with them, and to decide how you're going to make your own way in the world.

It's a blast. :)
Hanna B (Arizona)
I am a senior in high school and I think I'm pretty prepared for college. I didn't realize till my second semester of senior year that I needed to retake classes to get a higher GPA in order to get a scholarship for the school I want to go to. I got accepted into the school I want to go to, I am finishing up my last few classes before I graduate, and I am starting to apply for housing for NAU. My mom and step-dad went to college and it has motivated me a little bit more to want to go to college as well. I am a senior in high school and I think I'm pretty prepared for college.
Hayden S. (AZ)
I believe that the reason students are needing to take remedial classes is because the schools are not tending to the learning types of the students. Students are like snowflake none of them learn just like every one else. Some of them lean visually some learn kinetically and some learn by listening. So if a teacher teacher through a video and a lecture then the student how need to physically seen the words ore touch some thing to understand. I have difficulty in math because my teacher doesn't comply to my hands-on learning style. If teachers would be more sensitive to there students needs then the students might have a better time understanding the material there are being taught.
Jim (Pennsylvania)
How do you then explain, for example, math proficiency in earlier generations (e.g., my parents' Depression-era generation), when learning was far more impersonal than it is now?

In addition, trying to cater to each person's "uniqueness" in a class of 20-30 (sometimes more) simply isn't possible nor practical.
Ellsea (<br/>)
Be careful to not limit your ability to learn. You might have a visual/kinesthetic preference, but the reality of an academic college education is that topics becomes less concrete and more theoretical. Knowing your learning style gives you more information about where _you_ need to work harder, not what institutions need to do for you. I'm an interpersonal/auditory learner, I hate reading the text. But when I did, it sure helped! Good luck to you in school, I'll be cheering for you.
