Wasn't Ed Asner a TV news editor in the MTM show, not a newspaper editor? Or is there another TV show that I'm not thinking of where he WAS a newspaper editor?
Suzy M. (Higganum CT)
He was a newspaper editor in the spin-off "Lou Grant." Clue N - what can I say that hasn't been said?
Duane (Gallatin, TN)
Some fine clues today.
I enjoyed clues U, B and N.
J Epstein (Brooklyn)
Clue N: CLUE OF THE DECADE.

Got a little derailed on this one, because I thought the Frisbee team was the Warmothers. But apparently that's the women's team! Once I got past that, a smooth and entertaining solve.

Clue N--My favorite double-entendre clue of all time!
judy d (livingston nj)
Gimmies were Ed Asner, roach motel, Norton, elephant, earthworm and anther. liked dish towel. did remember Ethelred the unready!
Beejay (San Francisco)
I was able to start with NORTON, ED ASNER, GARFIELD, DISNEY, and ELEPHANT. Had ANswER before ANTHER, urg. Was close to getting ETHELRED, knowing it was one of those medieval names like Athelard or something, but finally looked it up, and was stuck on clothes line. Enjoyed the cluing; several GROANERS, like EYELID (oh those bats and balls). Tried to anagram Swarthmore, but didn't succeed, but I found that the women's team are the Warmothers. I also love Dave Barry. Fun, fun, fun.
Paul (Virginia)
I had the same gimmes plus ANTHER.
suejean (Harrogate)
I had a brain freeze on the English king and "knew" for sure that it was Richard I. I had more than usual answers on my first pass through, all of which I was fairly confident about and Richard just wasn't making it, finally the head smack, 1100 wasn't the year in question.

After that it was fairly smooth. I loved the Ogden Nash quote, and coincidentally I have just watched The Pink Panther on the telly.

I wanted the non electric dryer to be something like a clothes line, something I use a lot as I never tire of mentioning.

Fun quote.
RY (Forgotten Borough)
Nice acrostic that solved pretty readily.
Steve L (Chestnut Ridge, NY)
I just love N and its answer.
David Coughlan (Evanston IL)
Great puzzle, including funny puzzle message itself (last puzzle word nailed the message) as well as great clues, such as the Swarthmore frisbee team and Ogden Nash clues. Missed the unintended political interpretation of the "unsuitedness" clue, but if the shoe fits...
J Epstein (Brooklyn)
Totally intended if you ask me.
Jerrold (New York, NY)
P.S. After reading the Constructors' Notes, one thing is not clear.
I did not remember ANY elisions or ellipses, and I just went back now to double-check.
Aren't elisions or ellipses normally indicated by dotted lines?
There aren't any of those at all in that quote.
J Epstein (Brooklyn)
In acrostics ellipses will be indicated after the fact when the answer is published. Very often the source quote is butchered a bit to fit the various constraints. In thi sone, the title of the work was cut in half and instead of just eliding the second half completely, it was reused as a clue answer - that was was pretty slick.
Jerrold (New York, NY)
This Acrostic certainly was challenging. It was only toward the end that the grid began to “fill itself up”.

[MAJOR SPOILER ALERT]

My gimmes were GARFIELD, NORTON, ROACH MOTEL and ANTHER.

I had to search for EARTHWORMS and ETHELRED.
This one sure had its share of tricks: EYELID, DISHTOWEL,
DISNEY.
I had EAGER instead of ITCHY for a long time.

It is almost impossible to believe that the “unsuitedness” question was not intended as a political commentary, even though the puzzle was presumably constructed some weeks or months ago.
