New York Today: A Trump-less Tower

I geeked out this morning and crunch the numbers on a shreasheet. It boils down to this calculating 40 rides per month for the standard commuter:
With the 2.75 6% discount you spend 104.50 (pay for 38 rides).
With the 3.00 16% discount you spend 105 (pay for 35 rides).
So it only costs .50 more per month. but if you annualize it to 480 rides per year, you see the real difference:
With the 2.75 6% discount you will spend 1,245.75 (pay for 453 rides)
With the 3.00 16% discount you will spend 1,242.00 (pay for 414 rides).
The regular commuter saves more as long as they buy enough to get the discount. The tourists spend more which benefits the city.

While I'm not altogether glad Trump is in Washington D.C. -- at least he's not here.

Re: "At the Trump Store, near the soaring atrium, an employee said staff members were eagerly awaiting the arrival of memorabilia related to the 45th president."

I thought a sitting President is specifically forbidden from making money off of their presidency while in office?...not that he isn't already doing it in every form he can imagine.

Conflicts of interest?
Emoluents Clause of the U.S. Constutution?
Is anybody listening?
Shah (Worcester)
Am I the only one concerned that the Trump Store is preparing to make money from the image of Trump as president? It would appear that, if this is true, he (or his children) are intending a monetary profit from his position as president while he is in office.

With regard to the fare increase, if you are a senior citizen or disabled and buy the half-fare card at a station as far as I know you can only buy one at a time so if there is a fare increase the bonus is irrelevant.
Richard (New York, NY)
You have to fill out an application to qualify for the reduced-fare card. http://web.mta.info/nyct/fare/pdf/seniors.pdf. The 1/2 fare for all rides is better value than the bonus rides.
BigFootMN (Minneapolis)
If you qualify for either of those discounts, get a reduced fare MetroCard (available for seniors and disabled). Then you can put on a minimum amount and get the discounted fare without having to stop at station. Yes, it does take a bit of time to get the discounted card (can be done by mail), but it is a one-time event that pays dividends forever.
AnnaR (New York City)
That is incorrect - you can apply for a 1/2 fare metro card and get the bonus or put a weekly/monthly on your card.

Gosh don't I feel secure when the heavily armed officer is paying more attention to his texting than his duties. Not an uncommon sight, sadly. Are you kidding me?
N. Smith (New York City)
Who says he's texting???....he may be tweeting.

So true I commute through Penn Station every day the police seem more concerned about checking their phones than they do with who is traveling through the station. It's that way on the street and in Patrol cars as well. Police using personal phones should be banned while on duty. It's a joke

I think that the city, state, and federal governments should think about how much is spent to SUBSIDIZE the private automobile--roads, signs, DMV, meter maids, bridges, Parking Violations Bureau, policing, highway patrol and on and on--and consider diverting some of those funds to LOWER the fares for the MTA. If and when more people used the subway then, the government would probably SAVE money.

what about flotus and barron?

Anything that can be done so pedestrians can gaze with wonder at the glorious Tiffany windows on 5th Ave. should be encouraged.

Closing those bus stops inconveniences thousands of people.
Strong people can walk crosstown
But many people who depend on buses are frail elderly. .
Removing the M31 and M57 bus stop is a hardship. Making it a bit less convenient to get into Tiffany's is not a hardship.
Since Presidents get Secret Service protection for life, does that mean that the bus stops are gone for years?
It's Trump's choice to impose himself on us when he has several other houses, included one completely funded by taxpayer money.
Reopen the bus stops.
AMT (NYC)
Councilman Garodnick chaired a hearing on the Trump impact on transportation and businesses in the area. One viable alternative to cancelling the 57th bus stop east of 5th would be to relocate it either west of 5th besides Bulgari, or a bit farther east of 5th in front of Niketown. It presents a real and concerning hardship for seniors and less able-bodied people to have no bus stop between 6th Ave and Madison Ave. That's a loooong stretch.

Morning talk of Tiffany in Trump Tower somehow suggests one song.

Tune of Moon River

Trump Tower
Peaceful for a while
Come in and shop in style today

That deal maker
That press-shaker
Whenever he's going,
We're going "Okay!"

You shoppers
Walk into our store
Just walk right through our door, we cheer

Not just one percenters, my friend
More than just high end
So come inside and spend
Trump Tower's all clear

Article name: Here is why you should call, not email your representatives Nov. 23, 2016

Many government officials are -not answering their phones-, and are allowing their voicemails to reach their limit, like Senator Chris McDaniel, whom I called after reading several reprehensible Facebook comments by him.

https://www.facebook.com/senatormcdaniel/posts/1358944634169421

He has turned to Facebook to bully his constituents and to spew misogyny.

Our government needs to be held accountable. If we cannot call and have our needs be heard, our senators become rogue as has this one. There is a story here and it needs follow up. Please.
Andy Dotterweich (Michigan)
Thanks for sharing about Senator McDaniel, I had not been aware of him. As for your suggestion that a Senator from Mississippi is spewing misogyny, I hardly found that in his comments.

He seems to be a very Pro-Life Senator from Mississippi. He would probably have my vote if I lived there.

I would expect you can call one of your New York Senators and ask them to pass on your comments about any concerns you may have with his positions.
Y.ellen (NYC)
Thanks for pointing this out. I am sharing Mr McDaniel's hateful Facebook page rant with everyone I know.

More than half of Mississippians believe that President Obama is a Muslim (wouldn't matter, if it were true, but it's just an "alternative fact." Thanks, Kellyanne!) and don't believe in evolution.

He sounds like he fits right in.
HDNY (Manhattan)
I don't care about the Tower. I want a Trumpless government.
